All your rehabilitation needs under one roof
Founding Director and Head of Business Development, Jules Leahy, explains what makes STEPS Rehabilitation so unique, and why their rehabilitation pathway is second to none.
STEPS Rehabilitation in Sheffield has recently celebrated its 5th birthday. Opened in 2017 by sisters Jules Leahy and Toria Chan, the company is devoted to developing
Jules Leahy human potential and exemplifies the very best in pioneering rehabilitation. The facility delivers intensive and ongoing rehabilitation for people recovering from brain injury, spinal cord injury, traumatic amputation, stroke, and complex trauma injuries, enabling them to reach their full potential and to rebuild their lives.
“STEPS blossomed from a seedling of an idea” explains Jules. “We wanted to offer a service that we felt didn’t exist in the UK for individuals with life changing serious injuries and introduce a 24-hour rehabilitation approach. What we’ve done is reimagine rehabilitation by combining a wide range of specialist therapies and nursing care with medical consultant expertise to create a truly interdisciplinary approach. We believe this unique and sophisticated rehabilitation model, where the very best in rehabilitation methodology and care is all delivered under one roof, can achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients.”
REIMAGINING REHABILITATION
Motivated by a vision to create a facility that would be a temporary home as well as a place that people could receive specialist and intensive rehabilitation, STEPS is widely regarded as one of the leading serious injury rehabilitation facilities in the UK.
Alongside traditional rehabilitation therapies, STEPS offers clients access to pioneering robotic and VR technology, enabling them to receive truly individualised rehabilitation programmes that optimise their recovery.
Last year STEPS opened the first UK Fourier Intelligence ‘RehabHub’, a suite of cutting-edge rehabilitation technology invented by a Singapore-based technology company that develops pioneering exoskeleton and rehabilitation robotics. It focuses on both upper and lower limb robotic therapy, as well as cognitive training, providing a unique solution for neurorehabilitation.
STEPS is home to one of only three UK facilities offering clients access to the MindPod as part of the range of pioneering digital neurotherapeutics from MindMaze, developed in Switzerland. The MindMotion GO and MindPod Dolphin are part of a neurorehabilitation therapy system that comes with a large variety of animated gamified engaging activities covering motor and task functions.
“A very natural development for us was to establish a Training School at STEPS, which we launched last year” says Jules. “The school enables us to work closely with external professionals to help with the appointment of care teams which makes the transition home for a client and their family as smooth as possible. It came about as a result of us being frequently asked to deliver training by NHS commissioners and case managers for the care teams they had recruited, so that they could be sure of meeting each clients’ unique rehab and care needs. With our Clinical Nurse Educator working alongside our Transition of Care Lead, we’ve been able to develop this into a more formal offering via our Training School. “
CLIENT CENTRED REHABILITATION FACILITY
“We were all very motivated to ensure that STEPS is a place that we would choose for our loved ones. There have undoubtedly been many goosebump moments over the past few years. There are few things more satisfying than seeing clients who came into STEPS with serious and life changing injuries leave us after achieving a very significant improvement in the quality of their life, which of course also improves the quality of life for their partner and family.” ■
Our clients inspire us every day with their determination and positive attitude despite their serious injuries. Life is very precious, and we are reminded of this every day in our building.
