Whether
Family-friendly Devon
Devon has been known for being a great family-friendly destination for holidays and day trips for many years and was always the ‘go to’ destination for many families, as there is something to see and do for everyone – whatever their interests and whatever age.
Devon is an ideal family holiday destination, whether you are looking for safe family-friendly beaches for a ‘bucket and spade’ style holiday and exploring the many rock pools to discover what mystical creatures live there, or a visit to the numerous theme parks for the thrill seekers and the active.
It also boasts farm attractions set in the beautiful Devon countryside and there are zoos, aquariums, parks and gardens to visit, too. Lovers of culture and arts will be in their element, with many museums and historic attractions run by English Heritage or the National Trust – there is something in Devon for everyone. And, during these challenging economic times, you’ll get great value for money too. There are many things to see and do that are free to visit, making your holiday more affordable and
allowing you to make incredible memories to last a lifetime.
Activities are in abundance, such as rock climbing on Dartmoor. The many tors that are scattered across Dartmoor National Park are ideal for scaling, and when at the top of the rock, you’ll get spectacular views that will take your breath away. And if that doesn’t thrill you, try an exhilarating ride at one of the many theme parks or surfing in North Devon, which has just been named the UK’s only ‘Surf Reserve’. This puts it on a level with Malibu in California or Noosa in Australia. Devon really is the destination for family holidays, accommodating the tiniest tot to the ‘hard to please’ teenager – and everything in between.
Even those attractions that aren’t necessarily ‘aimed’ at children, are still very good at keeping their smaller visitors happy. They often go above and beyond to make sure that there’s
05 FamilyFirst.co.uk Travel & Tourism
something for them too, especially during the school holidays where you can find activities, workshops and interactive exhibitions across the county’s museums, galleries and historic buildings.
Family-friendly beaches
With two coastlines, one of them being a UNESCO world heritage site and another one falling within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you are never too far from one of Devon’s incredible beaches. With a lovely mix of sand, pebbles, hidden coves, miles of space and small private beaches – again, there is something for everyone here. Having a British beach holiday is such a quintessential part of growing up and Devon’s safe and clean beaches is one of the reasons why it is such a popular destination for families. Devon is home to a host of Blue Flag beaches and many of them have won awards for being great places for kids to do what kids do – muck about and have fun! With long stretches of sand, sheltered clean waters, good facilities and often rock pools a-plenty, they’re a great place to spend a day. Several of them are manned by lifeguards during the peak months too, so you can relax and let the kids’ enjoy themselves. Paignton, Westward Ho!, Woolacombe, Exmouth and Dawlish Warren beaches are all popular beaches for families, as they have lots of nearby facilities, including toilets and kiosks full of refreshments!
Dog-friendly beaches
One of the most frequently asked questions is whether dogs are allowed on beaches, the simple answer is yes –most of them! Places like Saunton Sands, Instow, Beesands Beach and Salcombe North Sands welcome dogs all year around, while many of the others have restrictions at certain times of the year or areas that are dog friendly. Just make sure to check the signs dotted around the beach before stepping onto the sand. You can also find a full list of dog-friendly beaches in Devon here: https://bit.

Make a splash
One thing that sets Devon’s beaches apart from others is the array of water sports available at them. North Devon is part of the UK’s first-ever surf reserve because it has the perfect conditions for surfing and other similar sports. During the summer months, you’ll find plenty of organisations along the seafront offering everything from tuition to equipment hire, so whether you’re a seasoned pro or want to give yourself a fun new challenge, everyone can get involved! Croyde Bay in North Devon is one of the most used beaches by water sports enthusiasts, while Woolacombe is better for beginners as the surf is a little calmer. You don’t have to be in North Devon though, you can enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking and a host of others in the English Riviera, South Devon and East Devon too!
Whether you want to chill out on the sand, indulge in some water sports, explore the South West Coast Path or just discover some wonderful creatures in the rockpools, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Devon’s beaches.
Devon adventures
Did you know Devon is home to several theme and adventure parks offering a host of different rides? You’ll find some of the biggest rides in the South West in the county and all of them are great fun for the whole family, whether you’re travelling with little kids, big kids or even elderly kids! If you dare, take on water slides or race each other across the park, there are indoor play areas for if the weather turns and some parks even have a selection of animal residents that you can befriend while you’re there. Some of them even offer the chance to do a spot of sheep or pig racing! Speaking of animals, Devon has a host of lovely animal attractions, from the large – such as the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth and Paignton Zoo – to the smaller options like Dartmoor Zoo or Exmoor Zoo. Whichever one you choose, they are all great at educating and entertaining children about native or exotic animals or marine life.
History and heritage
Devon has a diverse history and plenty of heritage and one great way to explore this is by visiting a castle or stately home. National organisations like the National Trust and English Heritage manage a variety of heritage attractions across the county and both offer lovely familyfriendly days out, with activities, trails and additional workshops, particularly during the school holidays. Many of them are also happy to welcome dogs, so the whole family can join in!
Explore the outdoors
For some, there is nothing better than running around a park or garden and
there are plenty around Devon for you to walk around, cycle through or play in dedicated play areas. There are often some amazing facilities right next door where you can pick up refreshments and they are a great option for the outdoorsy types who like to spend time in nature.
It isn’t just the National Parks or landscaped gardens that make Devon a good family destination – the region isn’t known for being Mother Nature’s Playground for nothing! You can check out opportunities to take on assault courses or the waves with some water sports or any other adventure activities.
Accommodation options
Wherever you choose to base yourself on your Devon getaway you can guarantee excellent accommodation to suit all requirements and budgets. A choice of hotels, whether coastal with an excellent view of the sea or somewhere more rural with nothing but sprawling fields outside your window, there is something for you.
Whether you want a self-catered cottage or barn conversion, a stay on a working farm, a B&B or a grand hotel in Devon, there is an extensive choice. Devon is full of friendly campsites or if you want something a little more unique, you’ll find a whole host of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget.

If you’re looking to have a proper family adventure this summer, there’s only one place to go:
The magical New Forest
Founded as a private hunting ground in 1079 by King William the Conqueror, the area is now world-famous for its thousands of roaming ponies, donkeys and cattle who freely graze and wander their way across the landscape.
Travel & Tourism 28 FamilyFirst.co.uk
The New Forest has more than 140,000 acres of open heathland and forests, with trees so old they date back to Tudor times, plus – our best kept secret – it also has 43 miles of quiet beaches and shoreline.
The New Forest’s wonderful natural landscape makes it the perfect place to re-wild your kids, because so many of the activities they can enjoy are free and fun!
If you want to introduce your children to walking, the New Forest is the ideal place to do so, with more than 140 miles of waymarked tracks and footpaths, and easy-to-follow walking trails and short strolls.
Plus, there are more than 100 miles of cycle routes, with around 98% being off-road – and some excellent bike hire companies, who can rent you anything from off-roaders to trailers and tagalongs.
Rhinefield Ornamental Woodland ride is one of the most popular routes, as it includes a ford, a deer sanctuary with an accessible viewing platform, and the chance to see the New Forest’s very own Giant Sequoia trees.
If the idea of getting right up into the trees appeals, book Go Adventure at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre near Burley. With a thrilling zip wire over the lake, platforms high in the trees and rope-bridges to negotiate, you’ll feel more than a bit like Indiana Jones!
Get out on the water on a sunny day with New Forest Activities or The New Forest Paddle Sport Company. Try kayaking or canoeing on the Beaulieu River, or hire a SUP and take it out onto the sea. For a wicked water experience, take the whole family to the inflatable Aqua Park at New Forest Water Park.
Exbury Gardens is another place to take a wonderful walk – the kids will enjoy all the winding paths, as well as the chance to ride the miniature steam train. Or head to Furzey Gardens and see if you can find all the fairy doors hidden among the flowers and trees.
The New Forest is home to many top attractions and activities for families to enjoy. Tiny tots will love Longdown Activity Farm near Ashurst, where they can see – and sometimes help to feed – the baby animals. They can also enjoy a bumpy tractor ride and let off steam in the undercover play areas. At nearby New Forest Wildlife Park, you can get up close to the sika, fallow and roe deer that roam freely within part of the park, or say hello to the wallabies hopping about the place. Horse-loving youngsters may want to check out the nearby Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park near Verwood, too. Try your hand at pond-dipping or bug hunting at Moors Valley Country Park and get hands-on with nature at Lepe Country Park.
The New Forest is also home to the UK’s only Peppa Pig World, at Paultons Park, recently voted the UK’s favourite family theme park. It has more than 70 rides to suit all ages, from tots to teens.
Another place worth an explore is the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Home to a phenomenal motor museum and Palace House, home of the Montagu family, there are plenty of activities at this brilliant attraction. Make sure you check out nearby Buckler’s Hard in Beaulieu, which tells the story of Admiral Lord Nelson’s Georgian shipyard.
And, while you’re here, visit St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery in Lymington or head to the excellent New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst. A visit will answer many questions about forest ways; from who owns the ponies, to the story of Harry ‘Brusher’ Mills, the snake-catcher who lived in the woods.
If you’re planning on staying, it’s good to know that the New Forest has a huge choice of accommodation on offer, from the 5* Chewton Glen Hotel, to the hip and super family-friendly Sandy Balls Holiday Village.
There are hotels with swimming pools, quaint cottages for hire and some top-rated holiday parks, with activities galore included in the price.
And, if you want to enjoy the full outdoor experience, check out the camping, glamping and cabin rentals, which place you in the heart of this extraordinary and timeless landscape.
The New Forest is a wonderful place, and we ask our visitors to be ‘Forest Friendly’ and follow the New Forest Code, so that the forest can continue to be enjoyed by future generations!

Visit Portsmouth
Put Portsmouth at the top of your travel agenda this summer, as there’s always plenty to explore –whatever the weather.
Portsmouth is the UK’s only island city, which means you get to enjoy all the perks and comforts a city provides (including a huge selection of restaurants, shops and attractions), but you are never far from the water’s edge. Whether it’s playing on the beach at Southsea, exploring the wildlife around Langstone Harbour or seeing the ships come and go into Portsmouth International Port, there are options to keep all ages and interests happy.
Start with a trip to Southsea Seafront, where you’ll find three miles of pebble beaches, as well as two piers, a castle,
restaurants, arcades, shops and more. You’re certain to find a spot for the whole family to set up for the day and during the warm summer months there’s really nothing better than a trip to the beach (with an ice cream, of course!).
Right alongside the seafront is Southsea Common, a huge expanse of open grassland where families have been enjoying picnics, barbecues and ball games for generations. If you want a day out on a budget this is the place to go, as you can take everything you need and just enjoy the fresh air and open space. Alternatively, there are other options across Southsea Common if you want to mix things

up, with it also being the location of Southsea Skatepark, Southsea Tennis Club, a beach volleyball court, and a selection of tea rooms and cafes (offering hot and cold drinks to go or great food and sweet treats to eat in).
At the south-eastern corner of Southsea Common you’ll find Exploria, the hugely popular soft play centre that’s open all year round –and which proves especially handy when the weather takes a turn. The bounce and play park is separated into different sections by age, to ensure youngsters can keep safe as they have fun. The Junior Play Zone is perfect for ages 5-12 and is packed with climbs, slides and ball pits, not to mention the rope bridge skywalk, vertical rollers and bash bags. Meanwhile, the Toddler and Baby Zones have a lot of the same –safely downsized. Finally, the Bounce Activity Zone offers activities for the most active and confident explorers, with dive platforms, stunt boxes, a battle beam, foam pits, dive tower, agility parkour, interactive play wall and more.
visitors at the heart of the action. You can also step on board LCT 7074, the last surviving Landing Craft Tank from the operation, which was big enough to carry up to 10 tanks and their crew members across the English Channel.
There’s even more history to explore at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. With the Ultimate Explorer ticket you get access to all the ships, museums and tours on offer, including HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and more.
At the world-class Mary Rose museum you can see the rescued hull of Henry VIII’s flagship, which lay on the seabed for 436 years before being returned to the surface in the largest marine salvage operation ever undertaken. As well as the ship itself, there are thousands of artefacts on display, telling the stories of those who served on the ship and what Tudor life was really like.
and never fired a shot in anger.
You can also explore HMS Victory – Lord Nelson’s flagship, which is now undergoing intensive restoration work to ensure it can continue being enjoyed by families for generations to come. Rather than hide away this fascinating work, though, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has put it front and centre, with Victory Live: The Big Repair showcasing the work of expert boatbuilders and restorers – making it a must-visit for anyone interested in STEM subjects.
Finish up with a trip to Boathouse 4 to see more boatbuilders in action, take a harbour tour to view the current crop of warships in port or try out the adrenaline-packed Commando Experience at Action Stations.
There’s all this to discover (and loads more) at Portsmouth this summer, so start planning your next adventure at visitportsmouth.co.uk
A stone’s throw from Exploria sits Southsea Castle – Henry VIII’s own fortification and the place where he watched the Battle of the Solent unfold (and witnessed the sinking of his beloved Mary Rose). It’s official... camping makes you happy!
In 2022, The Caravan and Camping Club published ‘The Outjoyment Report’ in partnership with expert researchers at Sheffield Hallam and Liverpool John Moore’s Universities. It was a ground-breaking study with some fascinating conclusions.
You don’t even need a tent
There’s more than one way to enjoy the great outdoors, so don’t worry if you don’t have the kit. You could go for a pre-erected safari-style tent or hire a motorhome. Many sites offer electric hook ups and managed sites will have staff on hand to help you get set up.
A quiet few days or full-on fortnight
It revealed that camping creates a deep sense of happiness. That’s because it makes an impact on both our physical and mental wellbeing. If we camp, we’re also more likely to be active and being closer to nature releases emotions like joy, excitement, pride and inspiration.
By connecting us with nature and each other, and helping us rediscover life’s simple pleasures, camping offers upsides that no other holiday can. Plus, the kids will absolutely love it!
No airports, hotels or hassle!
Easy to book and with great availability, a camping trip is the simplest way to take a break this summer. Without the stress of choosing the right hotel on the right deal, and free from airport queues and costly flights, it’s easy to see why camping is a such a popular holiday choice.
Camping is your flexible friend. You can enjoy a foreign holiday this summer and still find room in the budget for a few nights away at a relaxing seaside campsite. Pick one that’s got all the facilities you need and you could easily make camping your main event, especially when you’re within walking distance of the beach.
