Claire Rowney, chief executive at Breast Cancer Now
Welcome, everyone, to the Pink Ribbon Ball.
Some of you have been coming to the ball for multiple decades. For others, like me, it’s your first time. Whoever you are, I hope you have a wonderful night of fizz, food and fundraising. And just by being here tonight, you’re a part of something incredibly special.
Every year, thanks to our supporters, we make a huge difference for people affected by breast cancer. We fund millions of pounds worth of world-class research. We help thousands of people through our support services. And we run groundbreaking campaigns calling for change.
This past year alone, we’ve invested over £14 million in research grants to help us understand how and why breast cancer develops, and find new, more effective and kinder treatments.
Our nurses responded to 11,663 calls on our free helpline - listening, answering questions and offering comfort and support to people when they really need it.
And our fearless campaigning has helped more new cancer drugs become available on the NHS, potentially saving hundreds of lives.
But we never stand still. We’ve made huge progress in diagnosing and treating breast cancer over recent decades. But we need to go much, much further.
Someone is still diagnosed with breast cancer every 10 minutes in the UK. An estimated 61,000 people are
living with incurable secondary breast cancer. And over 11,500 people die from the disease every year.
Breast cancer is not a done deal. We need to keep researching, keep campaigning and keep supporting people.
It’s only by keeping up this momentum that we’ll achieve our vision – that by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live, and be supported to live well. And we can only do that with your help.
Thank you so much for your incredible support. I hope you have a wonderful evening.

help 5 people affected by breast cancer get vital answers by calling our free helpline. No question is too big or too small, and all calls are answered by breast care nurses and trained staff.
pay for 2 days of research. That’s 2 days for a researcher to better understand breast cancer. Work on their project. And find new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent the disease.
£1,000 could…
help us hold an event in parliament. Where we can speak to decision makers about the improvements needed in diagnosis, treatment and care and bring MPs face-to-face with people affected by breast cancer.
However you’re experiencing breast cancer, we’re here, with world-class research and life-changing support.
Every year, over 55,000 people in the UK hear the words “you have breast cancer”. That’s 1 person every 10 minutes. And if nothing changes, the number of people being diagnosed will continue to rise, and tens of thousands more will die from the disease.
At Breast Cancer Now, our vision is that by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live, and be supported to live well.
We believe that we can achieve this ambitious goal. But we can only do it with the support of amazing people like you. Will you join us?
support
Whoever you are, and whatever your experience of breast cancer, our free services are here for you. Whether you’re worried about breast cancer, dealing with your diagnosis or trying to live your life with or beyond treatment – or someone you love is. If you’re affected by breast cancer, you can turn to us.
We’re here for thousands of people each year with our helpline, trusted health information and multiple online and in-person support groups. And every year, we’re expanding our services to be here for more people who need us.
It might be a 20-minute phone call with one of our nurses. Or it might be a course with other people who understand what you’re going through. Because whatever breast cancer brings, we’re here.
We support over 310 of the brightest minds in breast cancer research. They’re discovering how to prevent breast cancer, help people to live well with the disease, and save lives.
Every day, they get closer to the next breakthrough. To date, we’ve invested over £284 million in world-class research, and it has led to hundreds of scientific discoveries.
Right now, we’re funding around 80 cutting edge research projects worth over £27 million across the UK and Europe. Most of them, worth just over £26 million, are happening in the UK and Ireland.
Without research, there won’t be change. More people will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year. They’ll have to go through difficult treatments with gruelling side effects. And people will keep dying from breast cancer. But research can help us change this.
We don’t just run life-changing support services and fund life-saving research. We’re dedicated to fighting for the best possible treatment, services and care for anyone affected by breast cancer.
When it comes to campaigning, we’re a force to be reckoned with.
Working with people affected by the disease, we make sure your voices are heard by the government, NHS, drug companies and beyond.
Through our successful campaigns, we’ve been able to help thousands of people access drug treatments they previously wouldn’t have been able to. And after a 15year fight, we secured a national secondary breast cancer audit, helping us to better understand the experiences of people with secondary breast cancer.
But with more people being diagnosed with breast cancer than ever before, and breast cancer screening uptake at an all-time low, we need you on our side as we keep fighting for change.
Professor Nick Orr tells us about a research project that has the potential to help thousands of people.
“Many people don’t know that both women and men can get breast cancer. But 55,500 women and 400 men are diagnosed every year in the UK.
My research team at Queen’s University Belfast are investigating how some genetic changes may cause breast cancer.
The research project focuses on identifying factors that contribute to the development of breast cancer –specifically how inherited variations in someone’s DNA may impact their risk of developing the disease.
We not only want to identify people who have a higher risk, but also, to ultimately design preventive interventions that can decrease their likelihood of developing breast cancer.
Along with other researchers, we’ve identified regions of the genome that are involved with risk of breast cancer in women and men. We’re now using a range of cutting-edge techniques to characterise these regions, illuminating the key genes and biological pathways that are involved in the development of breast cancer. If we can unravel why some people are more susceptible to breast cancer, researchers can develop precise, life-saving interventions.”
“ Your donations bring us closer to a future where fewer women and men have to face this devastating disease. ” If you’d like to find out how you can directly support the work of researchers like Professor Nick Orr, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch at philanthropy@breastcancernow.org.
Faye Czajkowski-Davis discovered our services after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Here, Faye tells us about her experience of volunteering when her treatment ended.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2022. I didn’t have a clue about breast cancer, and despite usually being level-headed and optimistic, my thoughts turned very dark.
It was my breast cancer nurse who introduced me to Breast Cancer Now and their health information. I set my sights on learning everything I could about my cancer. Being a midwife, I know how important it is to have accurate and reputable information, offered in a way that’s easily accessible and understandable. The charity became my primary source for information, and with knowledge came a greater sense of control and calm.
When my active treatment ended, I wanted to give something back to the
and now have a whole variety of roles. I’m a volunteer for a few of the support services, including Someone Like Me, Moving Forward and Younger Women Together. I was also lucky enough to volunteer at last year’s Pink Ribbon Ball. I was able to meet Breast Cancer Now supporters, staff and other volunteers. It was amazing.
By donating tonight, you can make a real difference to people’s lives. In a time when a person feels like their life has seemingly imploded into a place of uncertainty, fear and helplessness, your donations support the services and research that provide understanding, answers and community.
And with this comes hope. Hope that they will get through this. Hope that they will live a full life. Hope that one day, nobody will have to go through what they went through. So thank you for anything you can give.”
Emma Campbell
Emma was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2010 when she was 39. She was a newly single mum to 6-month-old triplets and a 6-year-old.
She had chemotherapy to shrink the 5cm tumour in her breast, and this was followed by a mastectomy, lymph node removal, reconstruction, radiotherapy and hormone treatment.
Physically, Emma recovered well and did her best to look to the future. But emotionally, the fear of recurrence and not being there for her children was all consuming. At the end of 2014, just as she was embracing a new-found optimism, Emma was told her cancer had returned and was now stage 4 - her biggest fear.
Again, Emma responded well to chemotherapy and went back into remission. But at the beginning of January 2019, she found new lumps in her other breast. This led to a second mastectomy, reconstruction and new treatment.
Emma continues to have regular treatment at the Royal Marsden and is incredibly grateful to have remained well and with no sign of active disease since 2019. As an author, podcast host and speaker she is passionate about showing that long term survival is possible. Emma shares her journey with her 66,000 followers on Instagram @limitless_em and through powerful conversations on her podcast, Open with Emma Campbell.
