What Makes A Baby

Cory S i lv e r be rg illustrated by F ion a Sm y t h

Regardless of whether a baby is adopted, conceived using reproductive technologies, at home or in a clinic, through surrogacy, or the old fashioned way, and regardless of how many people are involved, their orientation, gender, or family composition, the important things don’t change. What Makes a Baby helps parents tell children where they came from in a way that includes everyone. Written by sexuality educator Cory Silverberg, and illustrated by awardwinning Canadian artist Fiona Smyth, What Makes a Baby is as fun to look at as it is satisfying to read. Cory Silverberg is a sex educator, and the son of a sex therapist and a chil-

dren’s librarian. He is also the Sexuality Guide for About.com. He previously self-published this book after a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised the highest amount in the site’s history for a children’s book project. This is the first in a three-book series by Silverberg teaching young readers about sexuality, sexual health, and gender.

Sex is a Funny Word • For ages 7 and up • Fall 2014 • World Rights

The second book from sex educator Cory Silverberg, Sex is a Funny Word will provide a necessary resource for elementary school-aged children who are now able to understand more about the world around them. A hybrid picture/comic book, Sex is a Funny Word explores issues related to the body including body parts, personal boundaries, sexual health and development, sexualization (what it means to be sexy), as well as family structure, using age-appropriate language and images. As with What Makes a Baby, Sex Is a Funny Word will be inclusive of parents and children regardless of gender, sexual identity, sexual orientation, or family make-up.

Untitled Book 3 • For ages 10 and up • Spring 2015 • World Rights

Geared toward children entering adolescence, the third book in the series will offer more detailed information on the topics covered in Sex is a Funny Word and adds topics that are more conceptual and age appropriate, including puberty, sexual activities, STIs and HIV/AIDS, pornography, contraception (birth control), healthy relationships, sexual feelings and romantic or love feelings, and gender identity. Designed in graphic novel form, with a more sophisticated use of illustrations to appeal to an older reader, Untitled Book 3 will help adolescents and their parents or caregivers understand the coming shift from a focus on the self to a focus on the other that comes with puberty.

The Story of the Blue Planet

A n dr i Sn Æ r M agn a son illustrated by á sl aug Jónsd ó tt i r translated by J u l i a n M e l d on D’A rc y

On a blue planet far out in space there are no adults, only wild children who play when they want to and go to sleep when they are tired, without anyone telling them what to do. When a grown-up named Mr. Jolly Goodday lands on the planet, he teaches them how to fly and tacks the sun up in the sky so they never have to go to sleep—all for a seemingly small price. Soon their old ways are forgotten and the children’s friendship and ingenuity are put to the test in the most important undertaking of their lives. “Lean, swift and often lyrical . . . immensely satisfying—a major contribution to the sparsely populated eco-lit genre,” writes the New York Times. Icelandic author ANDRI SNÆR MAGNASON has received numerous international awards, including, most recently, for his novel LoveStar (Seven Stories Press, 2012), which won a special citation from the Philip K. Dick Award. In April 2013 the Toronto Youth Theater performed a theatrical version of The Story of the Blue Planet, which has been performed or published in over twentytwo countries. Magnason lives in Reykjavik with his family. 2013 Green Earth Book Award Honor Book Nomination for the Nordic Children’s Book Award The Icelandic Literary Prize Nominee for the IBBY Award and the IBBY Int’l Honor List for illustrations The Janusz Korczak Honorary Award The West Nordic Children’s Literature Prize

“In the tradition of Roald Dahl and Maurice Sendak, Magnason’s story celebrates the ferity and fearlessness of childhood as an idealized state. . . . a Suessian mix of wonder, wit, and gravitas.” —Amanda Little, New York Times Book Review “Dahl-like wit and a couple of eccentrically Arctic moments . . . make this a memorable and provocative tale, and a splendid opener for discussions about our own blue planet.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Trevor A Novella

Ja m e s l e ce sn e foreword by dav i d l e v i t h a n

The story of the boy who inspired THE TREVOR PROJECT Trevor is an exuberant, sociable, and witty thirteen year-old. So why, when he takes that nerve-wracking turn toward his locker at school, does he feel scared and alone? Based on the Academy Award–winning short film of the same name, the inspiration for The Trevor Project, Trevor mixes humor and realism in an urgent look at what makes some young people dream of dying instead of living—starting with what it is like to feel alienated from everything around you and, most importantly, what critical ties can enter in at the most unlikely moments to save you from despair. JAMES LECESNE is co-founder of The Trevor Project, the only nationwide 24-

hour crisis intervention and suicide prevention lifeline for LGBTQ teens. He has published two young adult novels, Absolute Brightness and Virgin Territory. His solo show, Word of Mouth, was awarded both a NY Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. Trevor began as a scene in Word of Mouth, was turned into an Academy Award–winning short film by Lecesne and director Peggy Rajski. In addition to writing, Lecesne is an actor on TV, in film, and on the stage. He lives in New York.

The Graphic Canon of Children’s Literature edited by Rus s k ick

In this new addition to the lauded Graphic Canon series, master anthologist Russ Kick shows adults everywhere that great children’s literature is great literature, period. And that it’s not just for children. The original three-volume anthology The Graphic Canon presented the world’s classic literature—from ancient times to the late twentieth century—as eyepopping comics, illustrations, and other visual forms. In this original volume, young people’s literature through the ages is given a new life by the best comics artists and illustrators. Fairy tales, fables, fantastical adventures, young adult novels, swashbuckling yarns, your favorite stories from childhood and your teenage years . . . they’re all here, in all their original complexity and strangeness, before they were censored or sanitized. Best-selling anthologist RUSS KICK was named one of its “50 Visionaries Who

Are Changing Your World” by Utne Reader. For his groundbreaking new series of books The Graphic Canon, Kick has commissioned new work from over 170 artists, as well as reintroduced existing work that wasn’t easy to find. With over 35,000 copies in print of the first three volumes, the Graphic Canon series has been praised as “a treasure trove for literary comics fans” (Wired), and “a masterpiece” (School Library Journal), and the New York Times says Kick has “struck a chord.” “Easily the most ambitious and successfully realized literary project in recent memory.” —National Public Radio

The Third Chimpanzee for Young People

Ja r e d Di a mon d adapted by R e be cc a St e fof f

The first book by Jared Diamond to be adapted for younger readers At some point during the last 100,000 years, humans began exhibiting traits and behavior that distinguished us from other animals, eventually creating language, art, religion, bicycles, spacecraft, and nuclear weaponry—all within a heartbeat of evolutionary time. Now, threatened with accelerated climate change, overpopulation, and gaping social inequalities, it seems our innate tendencies for violence and self-destruction have led us to a crucial tipping point. Where did these traits come from? Are they part of our species’ immutable destiny or is there hope for our species’ future if we change? The Third Chimpanzee for Young People is Professor Diamond’s first foray into writing for younger readers, and his first illustrated edition. He chose to participate based on his reading of the earlier books in the illustrated histories for young people series. JARED DIAMOND is professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published over 200 articles in Discover, Natural History, Nature, and Geo magazines. He is the author of several books including Guns, Germs, and Steel, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and has sold over 1.5 million copies, the international bestseller Collapse, and the recently published The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies?. The Third Chimpanzee won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 1992. A Young People’s History of the United States Howa r d Z i n n adapted by R e be cc a St e fof f

Here is Anyokah, the child who helped bring written language to her Cherokee people, and John Tinker, the high school student who fought all the way to the Supreme Court for freedom of expression at school—and won, and the young factory laborers who stood up for themselves with the National Child Labor Committee’s Declaration of Dependence. These stories and many others in this illustrated edition of Zinn’s celebrated classic history of America show the viewpoints of workers, slaves, immigrants, women, and others whose stories, and their impact, are often left out of history books. HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010) influenced a generation with his ideas on politics

and history, most importantly that “you can’t be neutral on a moving train”— that is, that history has no bystanders, only participants. REBECCA STEFOFF is the award-winning author of more than one hundred nonfiction books for children and young adults. “Zinn has written a brilliant and moving history of the American people from the point of view of those who have been exploited . . . an excellent antidote to establishment history.” —Library Journal

A Different Mirror for Young People A History of Multicultural America

Rona l d Ta k a k i adapted by R e be cc a St e fof f

The “mirror” that Ronald Takaki holds up to the United States reflects a multicultural history of oppression and exploitation, but also struggle, solidarity, and community. Takaki shows what has torn us apart, yet what knits us together. Acclaimed historian and writer Ronald Takaki (1939–2009) was a major

pioneer of multiculturalism. Author of a number of books, his A Different Mirror showed how ethnic history could come alive through the words of people, including teenagers, whose letters, diaries, and poems show that while they made America their home, often this did not happen without a fight. REBECCA STEFOFF is the award-winning author of more than one hundred nonfiction books for children and young adults. “An excellent way to include multi-ethnic materials in the classroom as a way to ensure that your students see their unique identities reflected in their coursework.” —Skipping Stones magazine

Do You Dream in Color? Insights from a Girl without Sight

L au r i e Ru b i n

Colors, Rubin tells us, affect everyone through sound, smell, taste, and a vast array of emotions and atmospheres. She explains that although she has been blind since birth, she has experienced color all her life. In her memoir for young adults Do You Dream in Color? Insights from a Girl without Sight, Laurie captures in vivid detail her initial diagnosis as a toddler, her adventures learning how to ski using touch and hearing alone, her disappointing experiences trying to fit in with her sighted classmates, discovering and coming to terms with her sexuality, and finally finding her sense of belonging through music and opera. Rubin describes her past as a “journey towards identity,” one she hopes will resonate with young people struggling with two fundamental questions: “Who am I?” and “Where do I fit in?” Although most of us aren’t blind, Rubin believes that many of us have traits that make us something other than “normal.” These differences, like blindness, may seem like barriers, but for the strong and the persistent, dreams can overcome barriers, no matter how large they may seem. This is what makes her story so unique yet so universal and important for young readers. Mezzo-soprano LAURIE RUBIN received high praise from New York Times chief

classical music critic Anthony Tommasini, who wrote that her voice displays “earthy, rich and poignant qualities.” Career highlights include her United Kingdom solo recital debut performance at Wigmore Hall in London, as well as her solo recital debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. She has recorded a CD of art songs with renowned collaborative pianists Graham Johnson and David Wilkinson. She is cofounder and associate artistic director of Ohana Arts. She also designs her own line of handmade jewelry, The LR Look.

Voices of a People’s History of the United States

Howa r d Z i n n and A n t hon y A r nov e “In Voices, Howard Zinn has given us our true story, the ongoing, notso-secret narrative of race and class in America.” —Russell Banks Here in their own words are Frederick Douglass, George Jackson, Chief Joseph, Martin Luther King Jr., Sacco and Vanzetti, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Twain, and Malcolm X, to name just a few of the hundreds of voices included in this book. These original speeches, letters, poems, and songs are the embodiment of the power of civil disobedience and dissent wherein lies our nations true spirit of defiance and resilience. HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010) influenced a generation with his ideas on politics

and history, most importantly that “you can’t be neutral on a moving train”— that is, that history has no bystanders, only participants. ANTHONY ARNOVE is the author of Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal. He is the co-director with Chris Moore and Howard Zinn of the film, The People Speak. www.howardzinn.org. Ages 12 and up TR • $19.95 • 978-1-58322-916-3 5.5" x 8.25" • 672 pages
