Windows
In addition to the storefronts, windows located at the upper stories and sides of buildings are essential elements to the architecture of buildings along Kenmore Boulevard. The style, proportion, color, and design are important to the overall look of your building.
Original windows can be repaired rather than replaced. While it is perceived that only new windows can be energy efficient, studies have shown that a historic wood window with good maintenance and repair can perform remarkably close to high-performance new windows at a fraction of the cost. See one of many articles on the subject here. If the original windows are missing, new replacements can be installed. New window styles should match the historic windows, based on photos or other evidence. If no historic information is available, it is recommended that new windows be oneover-one double hung sash. It is preferred that new windows use wood, wood with aluminum cladding or aluminum material and custom sized to fit the existing openings. Vinyl windows are discouraged.
Storm windows may be used. In this case, it is recommended storm windows be custom sized to match the window with a
narrow profile and frames that align with the pattern of the windows. Both windows and storms should have a painted finish.
