Seventies Catalogue 2010/11 “With so many different bmx brands and products available these days, it’s becoming more and more difficult to choose the best value bikes and parts to spend your money on. At Seventies we’ve always featured brands that are passionate about bmx and the products they make. Companies just like us... In short we’ve tried to make it easier for you; when you look through this catalogue you can rest assured that these products haven’t been made by a struggling mountain bike company or someone looking to make a quick buck, but rather by companies that support and promote bmx through riders, advertising, events and most importantly produce quality well designed products. Our products are available from many good shops around the UK, so please contact your local retailer. However if you need any assistance please get in touch with us...” That’s word for word the introduction that I wrote for the 2004/5 Seventies catalogue; now six years on there are even more companies, riders and colour options but our philosophy remains the same. We continue to support and promote bmx as we always have done. - Stuart Dawkins 2010

Road trips are always a good time - Even if it rains! Words by Charlie Jobling. Photography by George Marshall

Niki Croft, Jordan Aleppo and myself decided to see if we could go on a trip only using the train, now this may or may not be the easiest or cheapest way but it’s probably the most accessible method for most people. Niki and I already had Young Person Rail Cards (which knocks a third off the ticket price), Jordan had planned to get one at the station and had to bring a passport photo, I.D (Full driving license or Passport) and £25 for the rail card. However, it turned out that because there were three of us travelling together we qualified for a Group saver ticket which worked out cheaper than three rail cards! The first stop on the trip was London. We got the 10.50am train from Hastings, any earlier and we’d have been caught in rush hour where quite often the train company won’t let you on with a bike. Once in London we meet up with our friend and photographer George Marshall and he showed us around. The city was really busy and after getting kicked out of a few spots we decided to look for some quieter areas. The London bridge skatepark was totally empty and had a new spine ramp so we chilled there for a while getting a few clips and photos. Later on we met up with Orlando from the Make, rode some more street then ended the day with a session at Mile End skatepark and a BBQ at George’s. Trips are cheaper if you club together to buy food and drink (especially if you go to local supermarket) and if you have friends in the area that’ll put you up for the night you’ll save money that way too! You might have to sleep on the floor but a roof over your head is still a roof over your head! Fortunately for us George had a spare air bed and a mattress and we were able to charge our phones and camera batteries during our stay (always be sure to check with the host if that’s ok!). The next morning we went to Kings Cross station, Jordan was going back down to Hastings whilst Niki and I made our way to the Midlands. One thing worth noting is that on some long train routes you will need to reserve a space for your bike in advance. On the train to Leicester we made the most of the time eating and getting in touch with Robbo (Mutiny) who met us the station, he

took us to a curved wallride where we met up with Mark Lehair (The Make). Robbo knew loads of spots that we had never seen before! Later in the evening we went to Burton upon Trent to meet up with Joe G, Tom and Jordan Forster. Jordan and Mark drove while Niki and I got on another train, somehow Niki and I got to Burton first, even though we had to change at Derby, just goes to show that sometimes trains are quicker than cars. After a few phone calls we met up with everyone and had a session at a long 3 set of stairs, we were headed to the next spot when we got distracted by a tree ride which Niki and Mark wanted to ride, Niki wanted to see how high he could go and ended up with the floor straight to his face. After spending most of the night in the hospital with Niki we got picked up to spend the night at Joe’s house. We stopped by Tesco’s to get some food, but because of Niki’s face looking a bit messed up the security guard wouldn’t let him in! The next day we were going to ride Radcliffe on Trent. We cheated a little bit and jumped in Mark and Joe’s cars but on the way it started to rain heavily so we had to come up with another plan… Thankfully a while back Mark, myself and friends built some makeshift ramps in a old factory so we went there. Somehow Mark always manages to find something amazing and as soon as we got there he found a whole stash of fake £50 notes, he didn’t keep them though! The ramps had gotten pretty run down so we had to fix them up, we then rode there for an hour. We then drove to Grantham to get food and stop by ‘Grandmas’ trails. Some of us wanted to ride street so went into town whilst Niki stayed at ‘grandmas’ to film and catch up with Scott the Punk. The last night of the trip we stayed at Marks house then spent the next day at Bottesford Skatepark. After a couple of hours we headed back to Grantham where we all said our goodbyes and parted ways, I was going to stay in Grantham and visit family whilst Niki was headed to Nottingham to visit family and we would both meet back up in Hastings in a couple of days. Hopefully our trip goes to show that with a bit of planning, a desire to travel, good contacts and an open mind, the whole of the UK can be your playground.
