INTERACTION

A COLLABORATIVE EXPLORATION BETWEEN PEIWEN + JANE

ǩ &21&(37 ”INTERACTION” IS A PROJECT WHICH EXPLORES THE MEANS OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE LIVING IN TODAY’S SOCIETY. IN SINGAPORE, TECHNOLOGY, BEING WIDELY AVAILABLE TO MOST, ALLOWS FOR EASIER ACCESS TO COMMUNICATION MEANS BESIDES PHYSICAL CONTACT. WE NOW HAVE A MYRIAD OF MEDIUMS, FROM SOCIAL MEDIA TO MOBILE PHONES TO THE INTERNET. THIS PROJECT DRAWS AWARENESS TO THE COMMUNICATION MEDIUMS WHICH WE EMPLOY. ǩ 0(7+2'2/2*< OUR EXPLORATION STEMS FROM THE BASIC NOTION OF COMMUNICATION. IN A WAY, COMMUNICATION IS WITHOUT STRUCTURE OF RULE; IT CROSSES ALL DISCIPLINES AND EMCOMPASSES ALL OUR SENSES. YET AT THE SAME TIME THIS ERRATIC BEHAVIOUR CAN BE BROKEN DOWN AND CAPTURED TO FORM SOME KIND OF SEQUENCE AND HENCE BE RECORDED IN A PATTERN. WE BEGAN WITH DATA COLLECTION, AS IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST CRUCIAL ASPECTS IN OUR EXPLORATION.

EXECUTION INSTALLATION OUR ART WORK IS

IN THE FORM OF AN INSTALLATION; RECORDED SOUNDWAVES BEING TRANSLATED INTO SCULPTURAL FORMS, WITH DIFFERENT VARIABLES TO REPRESENT OUR DATA .

LASERCUTTING IN ORDER TO

ACHIEVE THE EFFECT THAT WE WANTED, WE EMPLOYED THE USE OF THE LASER CUTTING MACHINE, AS IT WAS THE MOST PRACTICAL METHOD OF CREATING THE 3D SCULPTURES. ALSO, THE ECTHING OF PATTERNS ON THE SURFACE WAS DONE MORE PRECISELY, AND GAVE OUR PRODUCT A BETTER FINISH.

MEDIUM WE CHOSE THE MEDIUM

OF PAPER OVER WOOD OR OTHER MATERIALS DUE TO ITS TACTILE QUALITY, COST EFFICIENCY AND VERSATALITY. THE MOUNTING BOARDS WE USED WERE EASIER TO MANIPULATE AND PIECE TOGETHER.

SWATCHES WE CREATED

SWATCHES FROM IMAGES THAT WERE DERIVED DURING THE PROCESS OF OUR PROJECT. THESE WERE SEAMLESS PATTERNS CREATED IN 4-TILE: SQUARE, MIRRORED VERTICALLY, HORIZONTALLY AND DIAGONALLY. 3-TILE: HEXAGONAL, MIRRORED IN 3 DIRECTIONS. 6-TILE: HEXAGONAL, MIRRORED IN 6 DIRECTIONS.

RHINO SWATCHES SCREENSHOTS FROM RHINO PROCESSES WHILE USING THE 3D PROGRAMME, RHINOCEROS, TO CREATE OUR 3D FILES FOR THE STRUCTURE, WE DECIDED TO CREATE SOME SWATCHES FROM THE INTERESTING LINES AND COMPLEX BREAKDOWN OF THE IMAGES. WE TOOK SCREENSHOTS OF OUR PROCESS AND TILED THE IMAGES TO FORM SOME VERY INTRIGUING AND ORGANIC SHAPES.

SOUNDWAVE SWATCHES VECTOR SOUNDWAVES THESE RECORDINGS OF OUR VOICES AS SOUNDWAVES WERE TAKEN AND USED TO CREATE SOME PATTERN SWATCHES. AFTER CONVERTING THEM INTO VECTOR IMAGES, WE CROPPED AND TILED THE IMAGES TO GIVE SOLID BLACK AND WHITE PATTERNS. AS MUCH AS THEY LOOK DYNAMIC ON THEIR OWN, THERE IS EVEN MORE INTERESTING PLAY WHEN WE OVERLAY THEM, ONE ON TOP OF ANOTHER.
