iven the uncertainty and complexity that have come to define the beginning of the 21st century - unprecedented change, economic instability, political discord, and scandal in all walks of life – it is no wonder many people today feel anxious about their present and future circumstances. It is in these times of disruption that we tend to turn to time-honored institutions in which we have an abiding faith to provide the wisdom and courage to help us navigate the turbulent waters. In its 100 years, Severn has weathered many disruptive eras; perhaps none more stressful than the Great Depression. In his yearbook dedication to the class of 1933 Severn's Founder, Mr. Rolland Teel wrote: "When you began your secondary school course, people everywhere in this land were riding recklessly the crest of the wave of getting and having. Education too was riding that materialistic wave. Everything seemed to be measured in terms of money. You have now seen that giant wave break on the rocks, leaving its victims on shore or dragging them back in the undertow struggling desperately to reach calm water. Heroic attempts to rescue are being
made. How successful they will be you have yet to see. The future of the world of which you are to be an active part is difficult to forecast. But adversity will ever be a great teacher to those who survive it. As you pursue your education in college and in life, true cultural and moral values will take higher places in the scale of values, for they are acquisitions that no calamity can take from you. Education is not a means to the acquisition of material wealth, but the firm support of and the basis of greater enjoyment of the material things you acquire through intelligent, industrious effort." At the beginning of this Centennial year, we brought together, for the first time, all students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The following are excerpts from my remarks to the students. "As you all know, Severn has been around for 100 years, and over those ten decades, the School has helped thousands of graduates grow, mature, and succeed, not only in school but, more importantly, in life as well. So as a school, Severn has gained a wisdom over its 100 years of existence that, if followed, one would succeed in school and in life. Too often we think of following in a negative sense. You hear from adults, “Don’t be a follower because you will be led down a bad path and then make poor decisions,” or, “Don’t follow others. You should stand up for yourself." The reality in life is that most of us will spend the majority of our time following – using others as models for our behavior and decision making - rather than leading, so it is very important that you exercise good judgment in deciding who to follow or for what cause you will allow yourself to be led. Do not be a thoughtless follower. Use the power of choice to follow those who will lead you to success and

allow you to mature in productive ways. The courage to lead is equally important in establishing a foundation for future success. When you get the opportunity to lead this year, and you will, use the wisdom gained from those you’ve chosen to follow to lead successfully. Some of you might be thinking, when will I have the opportunity to lead this year? I don’t hold a position of leadership – something like being on student council or a captain of a team…. You may not have a specific title or position that comes with it leadership expectations, but leadership is not only about an appointed or elected position. Leadership is much broader and all of us, every single day, are given an opportunity to lead…leading is about having the courage to do what is right - something as simple as holding the door for another person or as difficult as standing up for a classmate who is being treated badly by one of your friends. The bottom line is that every day all of us – students and faculty follow and all of us lead regardless of what grade we are in or what position we hold at Severn." There are, and will always be, times in our lives where circumstance outside of our control challenge us, make us anxious, pluck us out of our comfort zone. But isn’t that what a good school asks kids to do every day; lean into discomfort so that they will mature and grow. “Adversity will ever be a great teacher to those who survive it.” For 100 years, Severn has provided its students with the wisdom to follow and courage to lead such that when faced with adversity they are poised to reap the lessons and not be overwhelmed by it. to try so many different things here. It was evident to us, early on, that Severn is not just about teaching the child, it’s about the whole person. Severn wants its students to learn, and be well-rounded by encouraging them to be involved and to try new things.” What makes Severn unique? “From the moment we arrived on campus we felt the friendly, warm, loving, and safe environment. We got a real sense of community here. Parents and teachers know your children and you know the faculty and staff. For us it was about giving our children the opportunity to attend a school that has a strong sense of community and Severn offers that and much more. Severn has a history of tradition and a great network of alumni local to the area. “We really see how the School focuses on the individuality of each student and helps to develop their strengths along with providing them the leadership skills to move forward inside and outside of school.”
The Perfect Fit
Jeanne and Jack Saum When Jeanne and Jack Saum, parents of Molly '17 and Paul '19, toured Severn in 2010 they instantly felt it was the ideal school for their daughter who would be in the 6th grade that year. The Bridge recently sat down with Jeanne and Jack to ask them a few questions about why they chose Severn and how the School is the “perfect fit” for their family. Why did you select Severn? “We were looking for a school that could offer smaller class sizes, had structure and set boundaries for its students.” The Saums toured other area schools but when they arrived here they “fell in love with the School.” They also liked the fact that Severn “was established in the com-

munity, had a proven track record, and could provide the best opportunity for Molly and Paul to advance, not only in academics, but in athletics and the arts.” The fact that all options were opened to their children really appealed to them. “Molly and Paul have been given the opportunity
What are your hopes and expectations for Molly and Paul here at Severn? "We want our children to excel in everything they do, and here, at Severn, they are given that chance.” Jeanne added, "Our kids have taken risks and have made different choices, trying out for sports for example, that are paying off and those risks will continue to pay off. By taking a different path, one which they might have overlooked in the past, they will find new passions, meet new friends and will learn the importance and understand the value of teamwork, all of which will serve them now and in the future.” What impact has Severn had on Molly and Paul? “Molly and Paul’s confidence has grown so much since their time here. They want to be sought after to answer questions because they are confident they know the material.” Their peers have made an impact on Molly and Paul too. “We are so pleased that they are surrounded by other students who want to succeed and excel. We’ve come to realize that at Severn the students want to work

hard therefore they exceed expectations.” You invest your time here at the School through the APA, why? Jeanne is an active APA volunteer who became involved to meet other parents and to get an “insider” perspective of the school. “By doing what I love, taking pictures, I get to see a different side of the faculty and students. I am often in the background taking pictures so the students and teachers don’t see me, which allows me to get a true sense of how they teach and how the students respond.” Jeanne also adds, “volunteering is a great opportunity to enjoy my passion for photography as well it gives me a better appreciation for how the school operates and to see the faculty and staff work together to provide for the students.” Why have you invested in the Severn Annual Fund and the Severn on Course Campaign? “We understand that giving to the School is a necessity. We know that it helps and improves the value of future students like our youngest, Caroline, who is not yet a Severn student. In order to fulfill the vision of the School we know we must contribute.” Jack adds, “from a business point of view I know that you must invest in the strength of the facilities, which impacts the program and makes it the best place possible, for as long as possible, for a better return for students.”
TEEL HALL Taken in 1960 from the point of view of the "shacks" this is a view of Teel Hall (right side), built in 1919 and the Dining Hall (left side), built in 1920. This photo was taken six years before Teel Academic Center was built, so at this time, Teel Hall functioned as living quarters and classroom space for the boys. Teel was razed in 1984 and the McCleary Student Center stands there today.
SEVERNA PARK This photo from our archives was taken from the perspective of Teel Hall. The building stood on the far corner of Joe's Field and the Alumni Walkway. It's easy to see that Severna Park has made quite a few changes over the past 100 years.

The 5th grade class in Severn's Lower School takes a quick picture before the truck filled with hundreds of gifts heads to Warriormine, W. Va.
Kids Who Care: Holiday Giving Program Lower School sends hundreds of wrapped gifts to children of Warriormine, W. Va. What started out as a Chesapeake Academy parent’s concern over the fate of a small West Virginia mining town has turned into a 15-year tradition of holiday giving at Severn School’s Chesapeake Campus. On December 13, volunteer drivers Ron Sams and Ken Mauck loaded up a rental truck with more

than 260 white decorated bags filled with goodies such as markers, small toys, paints, crayons, puzzles, and more, along with hundreds of wrapped presents designated for the children of Warriormine, W. Va. and surrounding McDowell County. Families from the Lower School generously provided all of the wrapped presents, while students decorated the bags in art class or at home and filled them with special small gifts of their choice. Fifth grade students loaded the truck and sent the gifts off on the 400-plus mile drive. The program provides the gifts to a nondenominational church in the tiny povertystriken town, whose coal mines shut down years ago. According to the drivers, “Severn's Lower School plays Santa to a town that does not have Christmas without them. Families depend on these generous donations every year.”
Many of the students who have grown up with this tradition agree that there is great joy in decorating the bags, deciding what to put into them, and sharing what comes from the heart with others. “It’s wonderful that we can hold on to the traditions of our school, and be involved in a project where students can make such an impact by helping others,” commented a parent who was watching the truck being loaded up. This year’s project was organized by parents Mallory Cawlfield, Jennifer Mann and Deb Smith, along with the support of students, teachers, administrators and the APA. Other altruistic efforts this year included Call for Coats, which yielded 184 coat donations to the needy, Wounded Warrior Project donations from a free dress day, and a SPAN food drive before Thanksgiving sponsored by Student Council.

SCHOOL NEWSPAPER CELEBRATES 85 YEARS OLDEST KNOWN EDITION OF "SEVERN ANCHOR" IS MAY 21, 1937 ISSUE 1937 Masthead Proclaims Vol. VIII Indicates 1929 as Possible First Year of Paper By Kristyn Kuhn Reporting on both school life and the world beyond campus always has been the mission of The Anchor, which is now the Upper School student voice. “Published fortnightly during the school year,” in 1937, The Anchor was ‘Devoted to the Interests of the Students of Severn School.” A yearly subscription cost $1.50 in 1937; a single issue $.15. Included in the four-page May 21, 1937 edition is the announcement that Severn's first yearbook nears publication. Sports takes up a good part of the issue, with Severn ‘swamping’ Friends School 6-1 in tennis, losing to McDonogh and Boys’ Latin in lacrosse, but ‘downing’ Swarthmore College’s junior varsity lax team 11-4. Veiled gossip abounds (“Ensey had quite a time in Washington last week. He
says ‘they’ came in with the milkman…” and “Nick, the lady killer, mentioned he wouldn’t mind escorting Severn Park’s No. 1 gal, but she’s got a date.”), along with news of the Glee Club, the Camera Club, and advertisements for Hess Shoes for $4.95 and up. Movie listings tout the day’s hits – students could take in Café Metropole starring matinee idol Tyrone Power and Loretta Young. Over the years The Anchor has taken many shapes and forms while remaining the student paper of record. Sizes have varied from a large 17.5 x 12.5 tabloid size, to small booklet editions. The publication has been printed on glossy paper, traditional newsprint, and bound as matte paper books. Severn’s journalism teacher, Mr. Richard Zmuda, made the move to an online version of the student paper in 2010, under the editorship of Maddy Berg '11 and Sarah Bouchard '11. Produced as part of Mr. Zmuda’s class for neigh these past 13 years, The Anchor is now back to being the production of an Upper School club. “This year, being the centennial year, the Newspaper Club really wants to change the way people look at the school newspaper,
along with the content and design,” reports club president and Anchor co-editor Austin Anderson '14. “Before, The Anchor was tucked away on the Severn website where it was hard to get to and honestly a little bit bland. This year we have completely transformed the format of The Anchor hoping to catch your eye and draw more attention to student news. Co-editors Ben Simpson '14 and Susan Morrell '14 and I have decided we will send weekly reminders to students to read exciting stories about athletes, musical performances, and fun pictures from recent events; the weekly Binnacle for students.”

Looking back at a tradition of volunteers

Severn School's parent volunteers continue to support students, faculty, and administrative activities that enrich the educational process as we head into the School's second century.
D
uring this Centennial year, the APA (Admirals Parents’ Association) continues the tradition of providing volunteer and financial support to enrich the Severn School experience. This historic year provides an opportunity to reflect upon the volunteer contributions made by so many over the course of the APA’s history. Convocation provided the first event in Severn’s history where parent volunteers from two campuses representing preschool through grade 12, could join forces. As part of the Centennial celebra-

tion kick-off, parents distributed over 800 cupcakes to Severn School faculty, staff and students. The merge with Chesapeake Academy has also added new APA traditions to the Severn School calendar. The Lower School Fall Festival on October 26 brought volunteers together to help with games, face painting, baking, and more. The Admiral’s Collection joined in the festivities by selling spirit wear during the event. In November, the hospitality committee provided boxed lunches and the APA gave faculty and staff canvas tote bags in appreciation of their efforts. To help usher in the
holiday spirit, Greens Workshop volunteers gathered in December to make over 160 arrangements to give to every faculty and staff member. The committee also provided fresh decorated wreaths for both campuses. Volunteers have logged in over 1,000 hours every year in order to staff the school store, the Admiral’s Collection, and help in the library. In the Edward St. John Athletic Center, Galley volunteers continue to serve up fresh hot food and sell snacks during home athletic events. In addition, the Galley is now open for several special events such as the December MCA Severn chess tournament. The Chesapeake Campus volunteers run the Lower School’s hot lunch program. From these recurring volunteer opportunities alone, the APA boasts countless hours of volunteer service to the School this year. Volunteer hours are only a part of the support the Severn School community receives from the APA. If you read the weekly Binnacle or review Severn School’s annual calendar of events, there are many events and activities

that benefit from the APA’s support. This year, the APA has purchased the Upper and Middle School art department a Pugmill which recycles clay. The Upper School art department has new Pentax cameras and a print drying rack for the photography courses. The Upper School chemistry students have use of a new Flinn Scientific Spectrophotometer, Lab Manual, and software in addition to seven new Flinn electronic balances. The Lower School APA had such a successful October book fair, that they now have the opportunity to acquire many of their “wish list” items from the Scholastic catalog. In October, the athletic committee hosted their annual Admiral's Cup Golf Outing. It was again the first event in Severn’s history where parents, alumni and friends of both campuses could come together in support of Severn School while enjoying a friendly round of golf at Queenstown Golf Course. Through the efforts of parent volunteers, faculty wish lists have been fulfilled and Severn School has been able to improve the physical plant our students enjoy today. The McCleary Student Center, Creeden Hall and the Edward St. John Athletic Center all benefited from APA support. Many thanks to all of the parents throughout the years who have shared their time, energy and talents as a Severn School volunteer. Your efforts to enhance the Severn School experience, its facilities and its programs over the past century have allowed Severn School to not only thrive but to continually improve for each generation of students.

1. GRADUATION ROSE Cheryl Ritchie '74 casually mentioned to her mother the idea of girl's carrying roses at graduation, a tradition at her good friend's school. Little did she know her mother would go out and purchase roses for every female student for graduation.
2. GREENS WORKSHOP Parents have gathered for the annual Greens Workshop for over 35 years.
3. ANNUAL GIVING Through the years the Parent's Association has established a culture of giving to the School. Through several fundraisers the APA is able to support campaigns and the Severn Annual Fund each year.
4. ADMIRAL'S AFTER HOURS The parents are committed to building a sense of community and do so through annual "After Hours" social events for Upper School students, in a safe, supervised environment.
5. HOMECOMING From decorating the campus, staffing the Galley and assembling corsages, the Homecoming committee has always been a huge help in making sure the event is a success.
6. PARENT AMBASSADORS Parent ambassadors connect with new families at the beginning of the year to answer questions, share Severn traditions, and welcome them to the Severn community.

eacher, artist, and the 2013 Millard Faculty Travel Grant recipient, Dan Gvozden is a well-recognized individual throughout the Severn community. Gvozden has been with Severn for five years now. With his focus in the Fine Arts department, specifically digital and print media, he teaches a wide range of courses covering everything from film to photography to graphic design. “I feel that each of my different classes requires a vastly different approach, but I generally believe in empowering students with the responsibility and tools necessary to accomplish a task,” Gvozden says. “I enjoy connecting the work students are doing with how it might apply to their constantly changing and updating digital lives.” This same enthusiasm is evident in Gvozden’s work as an artist. “I've been interested in film as long as I can remember,” he says. “I can clearly remember how much of my childhood was spent deconstructing the Star Wars films, my first true loves. I would buy every magazine and pour over every article that I could get my hands on about how scenes were constructed, costumes

Established in 1997, the Millard Faculty Travel Grant provides professional development for Severn faculty members. The grants are awarded to those applicants that either contribute significantly to a faculty member’s professional growth in his/her areas of service to the school, or contribute to the development of the curriculum and programs of the school. Typically two grants, each ranging from $3,000 to $4,000, are awarded each year. To date, the Grant has been awarded to over 30 faculty members. The School is grateful to Steve Millard '51.

were designed, scripts were written, actors were directed, and special effects were created.” This interest has carried him well into a successful artistic career. One work in particular stands out in his mind; “In 2005, I joined the Severna Park community in the creation of a Public Service Announcement (PSA) addressing the growing concerns about teen suicide in the area. I wrote, directed, shot, and edited a film called the Empty Seat PSA with the help of over 400 volunteers and extras. The piece has gone on to become the #1 PSA on YouTube and remains my most emotionally effective piece I've ever created.” As a passionate teacher and artist, Gvozden was elated when informed his application for the Millard Grant was under strong consideration. In applying for the grant, he had to choose and plan a project he believed would help him further explore his interests so that he may acquire new-found knowledge and experience to share with his students. “In my application I presented my idea about traveling to Serbia to meet and connect with my family while exploring the Serbian youth art

"There is nothing quite like meeting new family and feeling their unwavering love for you, even in our minimal time together.” culture,” he explains. “I planned on shooting a documentary on my trip and the people I met in a country that most wouldn't think to visit.” His inspiring ideas and hard work paid off; the following summer he was halfway around the world, new production gear and DSLR camera in hand. “I forced myself to use a brand new camera and editing suite to construct my documentary,” Gvozden says. “These tools are the ones that my students have been using and I feel that with the additional practice time the trip provided me I have been able to adjust my course to assist those students who are using different resources than the ones I've provided.” In addition to filming his documentary, Gvozden was afforded the opportunity to connect with distant relatives. “It would be absolutely accurate to say that my experience in Serbia was a life-changing experience that will inform my professional, artistic, and family life going forward. There is nothing quite like meeting new family and feeling their unwavering love for you, even in our minimal time together,” Gvozden confides. “Just spending time with them was the highlight of the trip and something that I will never forget.”
However, Gvozden’s trip did not end in Siberia. “After Serbia I explored Italy, Turkey, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Vatican City,” he explains. “I had a loose plan on what I would see and do, but having the freedom to react to whatever elements or situations I found myself in was truly freeing and exciting. One night I enjoyed an orchestra in Florence's Piazza della Signoria and the next night I was celebrating Ramadan in a mosque in Istanbul after an intense Turkish bath. As an artist, these are experiences that will enrich my work in ways that I cannot begin to understand now.” And enrichment is really what the Millard Grant is all about. With these new and incredible experiences to draw from, Gvozden is able to apply this real-world knowledge in his classroom. “One of the things I learned from traveling to Serbia is about how their education system works,” he shares. “Their program provides so many difficulties for the students that leave them at a severe disadvantage. Students without proper resources are left to struggle for themselves and aren't given much support to work their way out of their educational adversity. This has helped me to diversify my teaching to take into account the resources that different students have to complete their assignments in my class.”

Fall Sports Update The Severn Admirals finished a great fall season against some fierce competitors. Below are the coach's recaps for each team. The VARSITY FOOTBALL team finished the season with four wins and five losses. Wins over cross town rivals AACS and Palotti were exciting for the boys. They also had a nice win against. St. Albans from the very strong Virginia Independent conference. The highlight win was a big Homecoming win against conference opponent John Carroll 33-10. In that game, senior quarterback Jack Munroe was 14-15 passing and threw for 3 touchdowns. Jarid Ryan ’14 sealed the game with a 50 yard touchdown run after catch followed immediately by a game ending interception. Severn nearly pulled off the upset of the year with a close 10-6 loss to eventual conference Champion St. Pauls.

THE UPPER SCHOOL CHORAL AND STRING PROGRAM

The inclusion of adult musicians allows us to increase the size of our ensembles and filling the areas where the student numbers may not be adequate. Orchestras and choruses need more than just numbers of participants, those participants must have certain skills. Side-by-Side allows a fledgling singer or instrumentalist the opportunity to work directly with an experienced adult mentor within his or her own section. The strange landscape painting “The Perspective of Memory,” by Spanish painter Salvador Dali, inspired wonderful clay clocks in advanced art. It’s not an accident the clocks are all showing a different time just like the watches in the painting. The clay clocks reflect the time each student was born! Clay boxes were constructed from slabs and covered with landscape in bass relief.

Then they set off designing and making their own teapots as they master hand-building skills through coil, slab, and pinch techniques. THE MEMORY PROJECT is a unique initiative that began in
three quarters culminating in a two act musical production. This year, the production will be "Tarzan: the Stage Musical" based on the Disney film, music and lyrics by Phil Collins, book by David Henry Hwang. A set design class meets third quarter in order to help Ms. Katie Leonard, our Middle School art teacher, design and construct a set onstage. Students in the class act, sing, dance, and help with stage make-up and costumes. They also are involved with the lights and tech. Some students perform in the pit with music. The production is Thursday, April 4, 2014, at 7 pm in Price Auditorium, following the Middle School "Meet the Artist" reception. Everyone is invited!
2004 in which art students in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned, or disadvantaged. Given that kids in such situations tend to have few personal keepsakes, the aim is to provide them with special memories that capture a piece of their childhood. For the past four years Severn Upper School students have participated in the Memory Project, creating at least a dozen portraits each year (22 portraits this year). It is important to note that not all of the participating students are art students or even enrolled in visual arts courses.

Happy New Year from the Alumni Council A fter a century of excellence it has never been more advantageous to be a graduate of Severn School. With the addition of the Lower School, the introduction of iPads, Stine Outdoor Education Center, and so many more initiatives, Severn is improving and growing by leaps and bounds. The Severn School Alumni Council has also been hard at work this year to help “unite the clans” of Severn graduates. We are planning community service and alumni networking events, and are opening meetings to the alumni population. Whether it be in-person, via phone or video Skype, all Severn alumni deserve the opportunity to stay in touch and offer ideas. It was amazing to see so many alumni at our networking event at the Annapolis Yacht Club in November. It was an honor to have Distinguished Alumni The Honorable Richard D. Bennett '65 and Tom Peters '60 in attendance. Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni Award honors Severn Veterans O
Headmaster Doug Lagarde presents Bill Zimmerman '67 with the 2013 Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni award on behalf of the 1,500 Severn alumni who have served our country.
n Friday, November 8, Severn School celebrated grandfriends' day and honored its founder, veterans and Distinguished Alumni. Faculty, grandparents, Upper and Middle School students, and other guests gathered in the Edward St. John Athletic Center for a special assembly. In celebration of the School's 100th year, the 2013 Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni award was presented to the over 1,500 alumni who have served our country. Two of Severn's Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni, CDR Robert B. Pirie Jr. '50 and RADM Edward K. Walker Jr. '50, regaled the audience with some of their own memories of school founder, Mr. Teel. Tom Peters '60, federal judge Richard Bennett '65, and Rear Admiral Joe Stewart '60, former head of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy attended the assembly and dedication. The Upper School Instrumental Ensemble honored veterans with a rousing armed services medley - playing the theme songs from
each of the services – while those assembled stand in honor of a family member who served. Immediately following the assembly, the new Century of Service monument adjacent to the Alumni Walkway flagpole, was dedicated. The monument celebrates Severn's centennial and remembers and pays tribute to the more than 1,500 Severn alumni who bravely and selflessly served in defense of our country. The Rolland M. Teel Distinguished Alumni Award was created by the Severn School Alumni Association to distinguish those Severn graduates who make significant and meaningful contributions to society. Jointly sponsored by the Board of Trustees and the Severn School Alumni Association, this is the highest honor the School can bestow and recognizes those alumni who have demonstrated outstanding service to humanity, service to community, professional achievement, and/or service to Severn School.

Andrew '91 and Amy Stehl Bauer '90 Andrew '91 and Amy Stehl Bauer '90 sat down with us to share what Severn means to them. Severn is grateful to be part of what the Bauer family loves.
Andrew Bauer ’91 and Amy Stehl ’90 knew each other at Severn, but not well. They met downtown over Thanksgiving, at the Severn unofficial gatherings, in the late 90’s, a few years after graduating from college. Then they started running into each other on a regular basis. After a few years of dating they married and joined the group that we call “alum married to alum.” As of today, we have 50 couples in this category, and the group grows every year. Andrew and Amy Stehl Bauer have now moved back to the Severna Park area. They live with their son Tref, age 4, near Severn and are on campus often for games and events.
Many of their friends are Severn graduates and Andrew’s siblings, Greg '00 and Kristen Bauer Zaks '93, also attended Severn. Andrew was the Alumni Association Chair for the 2006 – 2007 year. Andrew’s mom Fran taught biology at Severn, and the Foucault pendulum in Creeden Hall is named in her memory. Severn School is entwined with their family and is their community. Because Severn has been such a big part of both of their lives, they have named Severn as a beneficiary in their will and are members of the Severn 1914 Society. Andrew and Amy are also regular supporters to the Severn Annual Fund, monthly

When asked why, they both lit up. “It is so easy,” they replied. “It is convenient and we don’t have to think about it.” Automatic deduction is how they have set up most of their bills and gifts to the organizations that they support. Giving back is a lesson they each learned from their parents, and an important part of their lives. They are working on passing that lesson on to their son and trying to teach him by example in little and big ways. Andrew and Amy stressed that, it is important to lead by example and to support what you love.

class notes 1929 Edwin “Ed” Shuffle, Jr., 103, a long-time resident of Charleston, W. Va., died on August 15, 2013 at CAMC Hospital in Charleston after a sudden cardiac event. The son of Edwin and Maude Hovermale Shuffle, he was born April 9, 1910 in Washington, D.C. He married in 1943, and was preceded in death in 1978 by his wife of 35 years, Charleston native, Laura Virginia Bobbitt Shuffle.

"Shuff," as he was known to all his many friends, graduated from Central High School in Washington D.C. and the Severn School before attending the U.S. Naval Academy. After two years in the Navy as a midshipman, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, earning a B.S. in chemical engineering. Having previously spent approximately two years working with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, he then joined E.I. DuPont de Nemours at the Belle, W. Va. plant in 1937, where he worked as an engineer and manag-
er for 38 years before retiring. Shuff, with his wife, Ginny, raised three sons through the Charleston school system, participating with them in many school, church, scouting and camping (he himself had attained the scouting rank of Eagle Scout), swimming, tennis, basketball and golf activities. He also enjoyed visiting relatives and friends, primarily from Virginia to Massachusetts, plus vacationing and fishing for countless summers at beaches along the Atlantic coast. His other main interests included gardening, club badminton,
class notes playing bridge, dancing, attending West Virginia Symphony concerts, and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club and Edgewood Country Club, as well as a past Treasurer of the Kanawha Valley Youth Orchestra. He also continued to be active with the Boy Scouts.

He lived in Seattle for 11 years before his death. He is survived by his daughters Bonnie MacEwan, Pam MacEwan, and Karen MacEwan, and his grandchildren, Megan and Owen Burbank and Wiley Harkens. Mac was a retired lieutenant commander in the US Navy. He graduated from the US Naval Academy, class of 1945. He served in World War II, seeing action at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and other engagements.

Send notes to: Buzz Hall blairhall@aol.com Floyd Holloway, Jr., Commander, 84, of Venice, Fla., died on June 24, 2013. Born in Yorktown, Va., son of Floyd and Jennie Holloway. Floyd graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1951 with a bachelor of science in engineering. Floyd was a formidable collegiate athlete competing in football, wrestling and lacrosse. Upon graduation he entered the submarine service and commanded a number of boats. He retired as a Commander in 1973 from his final duty station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Floyd worked in the maritime industry in Tidewater, Va. after his naval career. An avid tennis player, he played frequently with friends in Venice until months before his passing. Floyd gave generously to charities including those overseeing the poor. He is survived by his two sons, Charles and Franklin and his granddaughter Emma. He is predeceased by his second wife Helen Holloway.

Box Kite to Bali: The Last Great Adventure of a U.S. Navy Pilot By George Thackray Weems '38 George, known as "Bee," was in the class of 1938 at Severn. He attended the US Naval Academy and was the regimental commander of the USNA's Class of 1942. Bee, a Navy test pilot, took a small plane from England to Australia in 1950. He brought along his father, the eminent navigator Captain P.V.H. Weems, and two other men. The story is an amazing memoir of flying a plywood-andcanvas plane around the world on the eve of the Cold War. Bee was killed in a plane crash in 1951, just after he wrote the story. The manuscript was kept in a trunk for 60 years, but was recently discovered, edited, and published in this book along with many of the amazing photos, letters, and other materials from his journey. Cheryl Ritchie '74 shared, “I recently attended a Severn School ladies brunch. But it was not just any kind of gathering. You see, it was kind of historic. We were the first class of girls that was accepted to and graduated from the all-male Severn School. We were asked to recount our experiences and memories in more or less an oral history in preparation for the play, Severn Steps, to be produced for the Severn School Centennial. Now who wouldn't want to be a fly on that wall? We laughed. We cried. We gasped. But mostly we discussed the similar sisterhood of circumstances that we experienced as the frontier women to break through the brick walls of this still standing male bastion. The place where we were appreciated with high tea along with high expectations to raise the morale, the attendance and the GPA of Severn School. For the record, we delivered on all counts. YOU DATED WHOM? YOU did what! No way! Get out of here! It took 40 years to find out ....WHAT? My, my, that fly got a workout. Like the girls would when they would be pulling
off their cheerleading outfits to put on their hockey uniforms to hit the field. Oh my, he was handsome. And he married her. He's where? He's what? Ladies, A t t e n t i o n! Do you remember the LADIES LOUNGE? You got called in for short skirts, too? REMEMBER that party? You dated HIM, too? YOU still have your cheerleading uniform? You sent your kids there? You have how many grandchildren? Bet they don't know this about grandma! And we will leave it at that. Oh, the one word for Severn School? FOREVER. Yes, forever in our hearts and memories and friendships. And the fellas? One word? Gentlemen. Yes, as a student body with the first influx of GIRLS, I would say GENTLEMEN. With Pom poms and hockey sticks in hand, we are proud to be among the first female ADMIRALS. And we enjoyed every minute of sharing our story.

Dr. Joseph DiRenzo is senior advisor to the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander for Science, Technology and Innovation. He is a retired Coast Guard officer, who also spent nine years in the Navy, in both the submarine and surface warfare communities. DiRenzo is one of the most published authors in the history of the Coast Guard. A five-time winner of the service's prestigious JOC Alex Haley award, he has published more than 300 articles since his retirement on various maritime terrorism and port security topics in publications such as Marine News, the Maritime Reporter, PROCEEDINGS, the American Legion magazine, National Defense and Undersea Warfare. In 2010 he co-wrote, with retired Vice Adm. James Hull, an article which placed second in the U.S. Naval Institute National Essay contest. DiRenzo is a 1982 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, holds a master's in business administration from California Coast University, and is a graduate of both the Naval War College and Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He completed his doctor of philosophy in business administration (Homeland Security specialization) in 2007 at Northcentral University in Prescott, Ariz. He is currently an adjunct professor at the Joint Forces Staff College, in Norfolk, Va., and teaches for both American Military University and Northcentral University on National Intelligence and Terrorism issues. He was named the first Coast Guard Chair to the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk in 2011. DiRenzo is married to Captain Karen DiRenzo, N.C., USN, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, who is the deputy director for quality, Naval Medical Clinic Portsmouth. They have two children Lt. j.g. Joe DiRenzo IV, a 2010 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy and Fulbright Scholar currently serving as the first lieutenant on CGC VIGILANT, and Lauren, who is a senior at Mitchell College in New London, Conn.

He has more than 20 years of experience working with sharks and other aquatic species and is responsible for the design and development of live animal exhibits for the aquarium. He leads the aquarium's husbandry team in the long-term care of the animals in the exhibit, while overseeing water chemistry, nutrition, life support operation, and animal enrichment. Dehart's knowledge of, and passion for sharks, has led him to serve on the Shark Advisory to Discovery Channel's Shark Week, and has made a number of high-profile media appearances including The Today Show, the Early Show, NBC Nightly News, and others.

The design and build of the new hospital was quite an undertaking but handled incredibly well with the help of Ben Harries '93 and his crew at Builder Guru Contracting. Also involved on the project, providing legal assistance, were Mike Hardy '95, and Sharon Singleton, wife of Scott Singleton '94; Gordon Triplett '94 rounded out the Severn alums by handling all of the IT work through his company Aertight Systems.

Adam Lewis '98 with family
of Princeton men's lacrosse, having received the McLaughlin Award as Division I Midfielder of the Year in both 2000 and 2001. He was a three-time first team All-American and helped the Tigers capture two national championships and four Ivy League crowns. The Annapolis native continued his success at the professional level in both the National Lacrosse League (indoor) and Major League Lacrosse (outdoor). Josh Sims spent 10 seasons in the NLL and has been playing MLL since 2001. After playing two seasons with the Washington Power, Sims became an original member of the Colorado Mammoth and was a two-time AllStar while helping the franchise capture the NLL Champions Cup in 2006. He amassed 206 career points on 89 goals and 117 assists. Sims began his MLL career with the Baltimore Bayhawks (20012005) and helped the club capture two championships. He has also played with the Denver Outlaws (2006-2009, 2012), Toronto Nationals and Chicago Machine and is a five-time All-Star selection with 225 career points on 143 goals (16 2-pointers) and 66 assists. Brian Zaks and wife, Kristin '93, welcomed twins, Zoe Laurel and Kai Edward, to the world on October 31, 2013. They reside in Charleston, S.C.

Danny built a blink and smile based photo viewing application for quadriplegics. She oversees the production and release of marketing materials for their international distribution wing. Esteban Limon continues to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve as a corporal. Esteban recently switched units from a Light Armored Reconnaissance Company in Frederick, Md. to an Infantry Unit in Houston, T.X. Esteban and his wife, Janice celebrated their one year anniversary in November. He is currently working for a company called GoldWiser as a senior precious metals buyer. Brian Phipps got engaged to Caitlin McFadden over the Thanksgiving holiday. Brian and Caitlin attended the University of Maryland where they were both standout lacrosse players. Brian and Caitlin are currently both persuing their careers as lacrosse coaches; Brian at Georgetown University and Caitlin at the University of Maryland. Becky Price and classmate Mack Gilmore '06 were recently engaged.

I most recently played for the Delmarva Shorebirds in Salisbury, Md. I'm currently preparing for next season and working part time for Under Armour. It's great to play in my hometown team's system. As of right now, I'm just working as hard as I can to put myself in a position to succeed. I'm really looking forward to next season and getting back out on the field.” Taylor Burns graduated from the University of Delaware in 2012 with a bachelors of science in economics. He currently works at Smartlink in Annapolis. He lives locally with his girlfriend, Lane, and their "puggle" dog, Bella. Kyle Chaires graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in mechanical engineering. He now lives in Annapolis, and works as a project engineer at Dixon Specialty Products in Chestertown, Md. Eliza Guthorn graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelors of science in supply chain management. She currently works at Shapiro, an import logistics company, in Baltimore.
She is newly engaged to her fiancé, Kevin Shaw. The two live locally with their chihuahua named Stella. Michele Manis graduated from The University of Georgia in 2012 with a bachelors of business administration in marketing. She is now an account manager for Compass Marketing, Inc. in Annapolis. She currently lives in downtown Annapolis (look out for her next time you find yourself at McGarvey's!). Josie Owen graduated from the University of Virginia in May 2012 with a bachelors of arts in history. She is currently a candidate for a M.S. degree in strategic communications from the University of Denver and expects to graduate in June 2014. She works part time for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and volunteers as an assistant coach for the Denver University women's lacrosse team. She lives in Denver with fellow Severn alums Lauren Benner '06 and Brooks Laufman '06. Matt Quinn is currently living in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he works as an assistant buyer at Lord and Taylor. He has been there since June 2012. Brittany Schuh graduated from Wake Forest University in 2012 with a bachelors of science in biology. Reunion Chairs Needed for Alumni Weekend 2014!

Richard Zmuda, Upper School English teacher, is bringing the story of the historic Apollo 11 mission to life for a new generation with his just-published “Apollo 11 – Original Adaptation For The Stage.” “There’s an entire younger generation out there that knows very little about the technological miracle that resulted in man’s first steps on the moon,” says Zmuda. “In addition, study after study confirms an alarming statistic that fewer kids are pursuing careers in the sciences. Maybe there’s a way,” he says, “to not only enlighten kids about what took place with Apollo 11 but to also get more kids jazzed about science.” And the timing couldn’t be better. Buzz Aldrin '46 himself will be speaking to the Severn community on April 1 as part of the Astle Memorial Lecture Series. He will be remembered for his many talents, chef, artist, seamster, gardener and thespian. Barry was involved with colonial players for many years. He made lifelong friends through his volunteer work at the theatre. Since 1998 he has worked with the Water Street Players of Severn School. For fifteen years he worked with his longtime friend Sharie Valario as the technical director in the theatre arts department performing two shows a year for the school. Mike Freitag died November 21, 2013 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mike began his career as a chemical engineer and held corporate positions as a quality coordinator and trainer. He later became a high school math teacher and tutor. Most recently he was a commercial real estate research associate. Mike enjoyed coaching youth sports and mentoring students as a co-moderator of the Severn School/ USNA FIRST- Robotics Club.

He is now in his first year of medical school at Ross University School of Medicine. Marvin Smith wishes to announce his engagement to Kortnee Frey. The two met in college at Valley Forge Christian College and will marry in Lake Ariel, Pa. in November 2014. Mark Staines graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012 with a bachelors of arts in advertising and marketing. He now lives in Dallas, Texas where he works as a regional program manager for Chrysler Capital. Vince Thompson graduated from Catholic University in 2012 with a bachelors of science in architecture. He is now working as a project manager for Pyramid Builders in Annapolis since June 2012. Annie Weber graduated from Penn State in 2012 and is currently living in Baltimore. She is in her second year at the University of Maryland Medical School.

Molly Laufman just got back in town and has started teaching bikram yoga at Bikram Yoga in Severna Park, Annapolis and Crofton. She completed a nine week teacher training in Los Angeles, taught by Bikram, himself. Go see Molly at any of the three locations!
Sean Sheehy is in Bahrain working with military sealift command (MSC). Sean is the medical and chemical/biological warfare officer on the ship as a 3rd mate working with the Navy to help with the war games in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. He is on the USS Catawba where he is tactically laying mines as well as shadowing for the Navy to act as the enemy in the games.

The Dillon Moran '13 Musician-in-Residence program welcomed The Onus Trio with special guest, Helen Sung, to school from January 8-10, 2014. Students were treated to a wide variety of events throughout the residency, including a number of lectures, workshops, and master classes. The week culminated with a performance by the group on Friday, January 10 at 7 pm in Price Auditorium.
