A
s documented in this issue of the Bridge, last June we said goodbye and good luck to another class of Severn graduates – the class of 2011. For some high school seniors, graduation signals an end, but as is implied by the word commencement, to Severn graduates it signifies a beginning — an opportunity to assume the responsibilities of their generation. As they embark on this important journey, I am confident their years spent at Severn provide a solid platform from which to make smart decisions and the tools and wherewithal to do so. A well educated population is crucially important if the United States is to succeed in an increasingly competitive global environment, and this generation will be asked to address some of the most important social, political, and scientific questions of our time. It will require creativity, the capacity to see multiple possibilities, and then the ability to choose wisely and formulate novel solutions to these complex problems. At our opening assembly this August, my remarks to the collective student body centered on the importance of seeing possibilities in situations and choosing well. The following are excerpts: The ability to choose well is arguably the most influential tool for controlling your future. Choice lets us get from who we are today to who we want to become in the future. The impact choice has on your potential, your future, cannot be overstated. Choice is imbedded in every aspect of your life, in every question you may face—questions as simple as ‘what should I have for breakfast’ or as complex as ‘should I report a fellow student for cheating on a test?’ In her book, The Art of Choosing, Dr. Sheena Iyengar a professor at Columbia University states, ‘We are faced daily with our own imperatives to choose. Should we act or hang back and observe? Calmly accept whatever comes our way, or doggedly pursue the goals we have set for ourselves? We measure our lives using different markers: years, major events, achievements. We can also measure them by the choices we make, the sum total of which has brought us to wherever and whoever we are today . . .. When we view life through this lens, it becomes clear that choice is an enormously powerful force, an essential determinant of how one leads a life.’
Our mission asks you ‘to marshal the courage to lead.’ This is not physical courage, the kind you might muster to take on an athletic opponent. It is another kind of courage—moral courage, the courage to stand up for what you believe in even when, especially when, it is not popular. Leadership demands you to think for yourself and act on your convictions; good leaders have an intellectual curiosity; they think widely, constantly seeking connections that others might miss; they possess a willingness to change and grow. Leaders have vision. They think of and identify meaningful choices in situations when others feel powerless. Leaders make choices today to achieve their vision, to make a better tomorrow. As you can see, at least in my opinion, being a leader means far more than being accomplished or being successful. In fact many accomplished people are not good leaders at all. Don’t get me wrong, many are, but being successful does not necessarily make you a good leader. For example, in making the headmaster’s list, are you a good leader? Maybe, maybe not. You may be a terrific basketball player but that doesn’t mean you are a good leader. A great lawyer, a great teacher, none of these necessarily make you a great leader. Leadership is not about your accomplishments: it’s about creating a better tomorrow by making informed choices today. Effective leaders have sharp vision, can see multiple possibilities when others see few, and then formulate and choose a new direction for the better. The essence of good leadership is simple—not easy, but simple. Make smart choices that improve you and your surroundings. Choosing is about creating a life, a life of value. Every day, every hour, every minute, you make choices and, in turn, you are made by those choices.
The rapidly changing world in which Severn graduates and current students will live, work, raise families, and be called upon to lead is full of promise and uncertainty. I have no worries, though, that our new graduates will flourish in this world. For nearly a century, a Severn education has established a foundation from which to lead by instilling the ability to identify possibilities when others see few and by making smart choices to improve both themselves and the communities in which they live. As always, if there are any thoughts you would like to share with me, please email d.lagarde@ severnschool.com. Go Admirals!

The Severn Oratorical Society, Emily Price ’11, the Maryland State Winner
coached by Dr. Jackie Baugh, continues to wow the
Severn community with articulate, poised and confident student speakers. A standout of last year is and national finalist in the Sons of the American
Revolution’s Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. Through elimination rounds, Emily reached the finals
as one of the top six speakers in the United States. This annual contest challenges students to write an original oration on the topic of an event, personality, or document which pertains to the Revolutionary War and to show the relationship it bears to America today. We proudly share Emily’s winning speech with our Bridge readers.
In Pursuit
of Scholarship
—Emily Price ’11
We
all remember Trumbull’s famous oil painting where our founding fathers sit down in the summer of 1776 to write our Declaration of Independence. They are of various ages, professions, and interests and they share a common goal. They’ve come together in Philadelphia for what would soon be our country. And they have the task of the millennium: craft a document to declare America’s independence and create a new nation. But how do they do it? How do these men usually characterized as farmers, as the everyday men’s men of the colonial era, manage to create a document that has lasted 235 years? And could we possibly do the same today?
specifics. He did not speak of small issues, but rather gave what was absolutely necessary: the principles. This man was not simply a farmer picking up his pitchfork to start a revolution. He and his colleagues were bright, intelligent men, ready to make a necessary change. They knew that what they were doing was justified because they had philosophical evidence behind them. They had read; they had conversed, and they had thought. These men were everyday scholars.
The answer? Scholarship.
If we ask our modern students if they know who Cicero is–would we be surprised if they answered, “Oh yeah, he was that guy who got eliminated on survivor last week, right?” Or if we ask them to explain the works of Sidney, “What? You mean that place in Australia?” How many of us truly understand the principles of Locke? And besides that, who are the great minds that we should have in our banks of knowledge? How many of us could easily reference the philosophies of Ghandi, Churchill, or Nelson Mandella?
There are five men assigned to the writing of the declaration; we all know them: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. And who do they choose to be the head of the committee? The youngest. Thomas Jefferson at only 33 years of age. Why? John Adams described Jefferson as having a “reputation for literature, science, and a happy talent of composition.” Originally, Jefferson asked Adams to make the draft of the declaration. Adams refused, believing that the young man who had so “seized upon his heart” was better fit for the job. Jefferson reluctantly accepted the position. He was on a time crunch. Remember, he had no computer, no internet, and no library at his fingertips that warm summer of 1776. He had only his own bank of knowledge. So he sat down, shut in his hotel room by the glimmering light of his oil lamp, and went to put quill to parchment. But what would he write? He pulled his quill back to think. He was a well read man. So he would draw on what he knew. Thomas Jefferson himself said that he drew his ideas from “the harmonizing sentiments of the day, whether expressed in letters, printed essays, or in the elementary books of public right, as Aristotle, Cicero, Locke, Sidney.” And so, a few nights, and many drafts later, the Declaration of Independence was born. Jefferson was able to express Locke’s natural rights of man that our country was founded upon because he was well read. He spoke broadly. He knew that in order for the declaration to last, it couldn’t be bogged down by
Now let us spring forward 235 years to today and let me ask, how many of us are everyday scholars?
What if we were called upon to create a document that would make a new nation? Could we call upon our banks of knowledge– sequestered in a hotel room–and craft a document to last 235 years in less than a week? Even with computers, internet, and libraries at our fingertips–could we understand and apply the principles of our great thinkers–on a time crunch? Our founding fathers knew that scholarship could reward them infinitely. But today those immortal concepts of Thomas Jefferson–Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness–have been degraded into several popculture references—“Life,” the popular board game; “Liberty,” the Jeep teen dream car; and “The Pursuit of Happiness,” the Will Smith movie. As American citizens it is our duty to foster that innate curiosity–that need for everyday scholarship of our founding fathers. As we enter the 21st century, let us pay homage to our founding fathers, those everyday scholars, as we continue our own quest for life and liberty through the pursuit of scholarship. 7

FROM THE 1975 NAVIGATOR: Woody feels that coffee makes a good teacher. If he were “head man” he said he would like to make the coffee stronger. Mr. Johnston has been at Severn for “three fun years” (as he says),“but time sure flies when you’re having fun.” He is still waiting for a memorable teaching experience. Hillsadale College, Akron University and Loyola College have all seen Mr. Johnston over the years. Mr. Johnston has “inside” and “outside” interests. He is advisor to the Chess Club, Prom Committee and the Junior Class. Mr. Johnston was also the assistant soccer coach. He teaches 7th grade English, Modern World Literature, Great Books and Comp. II. When asked if he held any positions, Mr. Johnston gravely replied that he once held a yoga position for 30 minutes.

FALL 2011
This year, Norwood Johnston II, Director of College Counseling, will celebrate 40 years as a dedicated Severn staffer. How on earth does he stay fresh?
H
e will tell you he has the best job at Severn, and perhaps he does. Sitting in his organized and comfortable office, Woody Johnston shows no signs of ‘back to school’ stress, no apprehension over the next round of college applicants that will sit nervously before him, and frankly, perfectly positive and at ease in his position as director of College Counseling and with his many years at Severn. “It’s a constantly changing environment,” says Woody. “I meet new kids every year, new families. I don’t have the workload and the grading concerns that our faculty has but I know every student, every parent, and I still interact with them all at different levels.” Nice work if you can get it. Woody knows the demands of teaching—he first came to Severn in 1972 as an English teacher, teaching 5 sections of English, coaching JV Soccer and serving as advisor to the Chess Club. Woody was appointed head of the English Department in 1976 by Headmaster Jim Donnelly. A year later, he was asked to be the Director of College Counseling, holding both positions and continuing to teach two sections of Honors American Literature until 1988 when Headmaster Edson Sheppard asked him to assume the role of full-time director of college counseling, a position he holds to this day. Woody continued to teach American Literature, Shakespeare, and up until two years ago, an elective, Detective Fiction. Woody says, “Not being in the classroom last year and this has meant that I have missed opportunities to engage students in an activity that I love, reading and responding to great literature.” Woody does not believe that students have changed that much over the years taking into account different habits, different dress, and a technological revolution. But he does believe that their focus has changed. “Students are definitely more self-motivated,” he says. “They focus on their priorities better and are actually more spirited.” He believes that the whole college application process has accelerated. “More students are applying than ever before, often to the same group of universities,” says Woody. “More of the applicants are women than men, many are international, and
most submit multiple applications, making the selection process increasingly selective.” And have parents changed? “Well, parents today do hover, and some will mash their teeth over this but I find that it is worse when parents can’t be involved. When I work with a student whose parent is not available to sit with us for whatever reason, I find I miss the hovering.” Woody has certainly experienced the physical transformation of the Severn campus. “Severn has evolved and allowed the people to go along with it,” he says. He feels that when the School went co-ed, along with the designation of Middle and Upper Schools, Severn began to attract a higher caliber student. As facilities and programs improved, specifically over the last 10 years, opportunities for faculty grew as well and that too served to attract better and more diverse students. When pressed to comment about areas of possible improvement, Woody could only think of one such area—the archives and its importance and relevance to our identity. “We need to seize who we were and make it who we are,” he says. “‘Private schools take the literal meaning of ‘independent’ quite seriously. Severn celebrates its ‘independence’ by separating itself from others, by declaring our distinction, by defining our mission uniquely.” Severn currently has two full-time college counselors and Woody is extremely thankful to have Sarah Markhovsky, Associate Director of College Counseling, as his partner for the last five years. Woody has much to be proud of, certainly not the least of which are the thousands of grateful students he has guided and sent off to begin successful college careers. “Do you realize that our student to college counselor ratio is 1 to 50,” he asks, “that public school college counselors see hundreds of students while they also serve as academic counselors, psychological counselors, and class deans? I feel like an ambassador of the School,” he continues. “I have the opportunity to travel to conferences and represent Severn to hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. I am constantly enriched and restored by the interchange of ideas among students, parents, and my colleagues,” —as we are enriched, Woody, by your commitment to Severn School. —Pam Heffner

The 2011 Boys Varsity Lacrosse team improved as a team and as a program with a final record of 10 wins and 12 losses. We started the season off with wins over Bullis and Western Reserve, two teams we lost to last year and, on our spring break trip, we beat Cape Henry and St. Anne’s-Belfield in very exciting night games in Charlottesville. We traveled to Baltimore and beat Friends. After losing three straight games, we rebounded with our best win all year by beating Loyola 7-5 at home. In Anne Arundel county, we had our best year ever by snapping a three season losing streak and beating Spalding 7-3. We played in the Severna Park tournament and beat Annapolis 9-2 and had an exciting come from behind victory over Severna Park 8-7. Although we lost to St. Mary’s, our student athletes played with a lot of heart and passion in the 8-6 defeat. We lost 12 games this year but 9 of those losses came from teams ranked in the top 6 in the state. Our Ted White MVP award was given to Cole Bailey ’11 for his leadership and production (75 points, 31 goals and 44 assists). These are truly outstanding numbers considering the talent that Cole had to play against each game. The Player’s award was given to two players, Kevin Bolger ’11 and Adam Blaszczak ’11, both goalies. These young men have been competing against each other since their freshmen year and shared the goal tending responsibilities. Our Hardest Shot contest was won by Mark Cohen ’12 at 89 MPH. Mark is now tied for 4th place on the Severn School All Time Hardest Shot List. GIRLS LACROSSE Coach Renie Sotiropoulos
The 2011 Girls Varsity Lacrosse team ended the season with an 11-9 record. Led by eight seniors, this year’s team was a mixture of seasoned veterans and promising new talent. It was good to see the squad come together under the leadership of captains Caroline Code ’11 and Rachael Nock ’11. The team put together some great wins against ranked opponents including St Pauls, Severna Park, 14
and Broadneck. The team made period appearances in the Baltimore Sun Top 15 and was ranked either 1 or 2 in Anne Arundel County by the Annapolis Capital through the season. The Ted White MVP Award went to Beanie Antonini ’11 and the Player’s Award went to Rachael Nock. We will miss the seniors who can be proud of the way they represented the program and the school over the last four years but they have left the program in the capable hands of new captains Alexa Kunowsky ’12 and Kelly Reese ’13 as well as returning and new varsity players. TRACK AND FIELD Coach Richard Zmuda
The Severn Track and Field team had an outstanding 2011 Spring season. Some of the highlights for the girls included a new school record in the 4 x 400 and multiple runners qualifying for the A Conference Championships, including: Grace Weaver ’12 (400, long jump), Delia Repasky ’13 (300 hurdles), Lana Humes ’14 (400), Teisha Miles ’12 (shot put), and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams. At the end of the season, Delia Repasky received the Coach’s Award and Grace Weaver received the Player’s Award. For the boys, Adam Boldt ’13 and Chris Byrns ’12 both broke 5 minutes in the mile. Also, the boys 4 x 800 relay team won the B Conference and qualified for the A Conference Championships. Eamonn Vain-Callahan ’12 received the Coach’s Award and Kevin Priddy ’11 won the Player’s Award. BASEBALL Coach Hal Sparks
The Severn Baseball team finished the season with the best record (18-2) in the B Division. The team received a first round bye in the playoffs after winning the Red Division Conference. The first game in the playoffs was vs. Mount Carmel (eventual division champion) and the only conference team to defeat the Admirals during the regular season. Severn lost to Mount Carmel in extra innings and pitching let the team down in the next playoff game, ousting us from the playoffs. Severn ended the season with a 18-4 record, after ranking as high as 9th in the Baltimore
Sun poll of all high schools in the Metro area. Several players had excellent seasons with pitcher Joe Kotler ’12 winning 10 games in a row with a 1.73 era. Joe struck out 96 and walked 16, pitching 66 innings. Keenan Schlegel ’13 and Sam Wachs ’11 had records pitching for the Admirals. Wachs ended with a 3-1 record and Schlegel finished 5-2. Leading hitters were Jake Ashworth ’11 at .492, Ryan Boulier ’11 at .482, Sam Meisenberg ’11 at .414, Ben Stringfellow ’11 at .413 and Nick Stringfellow ’11 at .409. The Admirals played good defense only committing 42 errors. Team speed was outstanding with 89 stolen bases, Jake Ashworth leading with 25 stolen bases. Ryan Boulier led the team with 13 sacrifices. The future looks bright for the Admirals baseball program, returning Kotler, Lantz and Schlegel on the mound and underclassman Dave Jaklistch ’14, Jack Treanor ’13 and Zach Domenech ’14 to help in 2012. The motto of the team, “If you can’t bunt, you can’t play and if you can’t throw strikes, you can’t pitch,” is what the team strives to achieve. BOYS TENNIS Coach Cathy Officer
The Varsity Boys Tennis program continued to make strides in the MIAA A Conference finishing with five conference wins over Boy’s Latin, Calvert Hall, John Carroll, Park and Friends. They tied with two other teams, St. Pauls and Park School, for sixth place in the 12 team conference. Highlights included beating Calvert Hall, Park and Friends for the first time since entering the elite A league. Despite the lack of home courts ,
the team rallied to play all over the county and travel more than normal to complete this successful season. The team was led by Co-Captain Mike Alden ’11 who faced the toughest competition at one singles. The best overall record went to the other co-captain Jai Lakhanpal ’12 who finished with an impressive 7-5 league record at three singles. This year’s Player’s Award went to Mike Alden whose dedication to the sport of tennis and leadership on and off the court gained the respect of the other players. He will be truly missed next year. The Coach’s Award goes to a player that only missed practice one time and was a four year varsity starter, Bennett Heussler ’11, another senior who will be missed.

The Severn Golf team had a comeback 2011 spring season. After missing the playoffs the previous two years, the golf team had to win the last match of the season on the road against Curley to make the playoffs. Lead by senior captain and All-Conference selection, Sarah Brown ’11 the Admiral Golf team was able to pull out victory 11 ½ to 10 ½ to secure a playoff spot. A strong nucleus of players return from the 2011 team and look to make another push to the playoffs in 2012. SAILING Coach Anne Megargel
The Severn Sailing team had a great year and ended the 2010-11 campaign with an excellent 4th place finish at the Fleet Racing Mallory Championships, only losing to two San Diego teams and a team from the US Virgin Islands. The team continued to make significant strides in terms of team racing as well. While not qualifying for Team Race Nationals Baker Trophy, which was a bit of a disappointment, we put forth a strong effort at the Mid-Atlantic Championships even while missing some critical seniors at the event. We are hopeful that the experience gained by Patrick Floyd ’13 and Maeve White ’13, our sophomore skippers at that regatta, will serve us well as we move into developing our team race knowledge and skills. 1933 Carlton Mulcahy Rogers died on July 2, 2011. Upon graduation from Severn, Carlton returned to Los Angeles and spent the next 2 years at Pomona College, where he joined the R.O.T.C. program. He transferred to the University of Southern California, where he graduated in 1938 with a BA in business. In 1940, he graduated from Southwestern Law School and then served as a special agent in the FBI prior to WWII. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May 1942, as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the South Pacific theater as a 1st Lieutenant with the 362nd Engineers, operating a lumber mill on Guadalcanal. He was then reassigned to the European theater, now as a Captain, and served with General Patton’s 15th Army, building bridges to cross the Rhine River. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he headed to Phoenix, Arizona, where he started the Union Gypsum Co., manufactures of wall board and other building materials. With his father’s passing in 1952, Carlton took over as president of Pacific Rock & Gravel Co., with mining operations in Irwindale, Upland and Corona, CA.
1935 Brigadier General James Howard Keller passed away on February 13. After graduation from Severn, Jim entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1939. He was captain of the lacrosse teams in both 1936 and 1939. In 1941 he was assigned to the 32nd infantry regiment of the 7th Division 18
with which he served in the Pacific area throughout World War II. He participated in the campaigns of Attu, Kwajalien, the Philippines, Okinawa and finally the surrender of Japanese forces in South Korea. He commanded the 32nd infantry regiment at the end of the war. In 1945 he was assigned to the faculty at West Point. During his military career he was awarded the combat infantryman’s badge, the distinguished service medal, two silver star medals, three Legion of Merit medals, four bronze star medals and the Army commendation medal. He retired from the Army in 1969 and was employed by the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation in St. Louis until 1976. After 30 years of military service and eight years with McDonnellDouglas, General Keller retired. He served terms as president of Sea Pines Golf Club, Inc., Sea Pines Country Club and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Seabrook.
1937 John Randolph “Randy” Coupland, III passed away on August 11, 2011. After graduating from Severn, Randy went on to the University of Virginia. He had a love of sports, especially baseball. He was the first pitcher to have his name engraved in the Norfolk, VA “No Hit, No Run” Hall of Fame Book in 1931 and later was inducted into Severn Athletic Hall of Fame. At the University of Virginia, Randy always joked that he was drafted twice—once by the Yankees, and once by Uncle Sam calling him to service shortly after. He claims his most memorable time in his brief baseball career was
the opportunity to pitch to Joe DiMaggio. Unfortunately, the first pitch was hit over center field and a smiling DiMaggio said, “Welcome to the majors kid,” as he rounded the bases. From ’35-’39 he served in the Naval Reserve and was drafted and commissioned in 1942 into the US Army. He served with the French Army in northern Africa and as a Captain in the US Army 3rd Infantry Division in the European theater. Randy was discharged in 1946 and recalled in 1951 for the Korean conflict. He served as an advisor with the Korean Army and was discharged a second time in December 1952.
1938 Richard “Dick” Lazenby died from pneumonia July 30. While at Severn, Dick received the honor of All Maryland Lacrosse before moving on to the University of Virginia, participating in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and three sports - soccer, swimming and lacrosse. Dick then attended the US Naval Academy, Class of 1943. He achieved All Maryland and All American honorable mention in lacrosse and was the Naval Academy’s representative to the second North/ South All Star lacrosse game in 1941, where he scored the winning goal for the south team. Following graduation he was assigned to a destroyer operating in the North Atlantic, then shifted down to the invasion of North Africa and landing at Sicily. This was followed by an assignment to another destroyer serving the Pacific and which took part in the landing at Saipan. During the summer of 1944 he was ordered back to the states and served on five different aircraft
carriers. He became commanding officer of VA 94 (fighter squadron) and was executive officer of the carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also had two tours in the Pentagon both in public affairs—the first in the Navy Department, the second in the Department of Defense as head of the Naval Security Review, where his performance earned him the Meritorious Service Metal. On retiring from the Navy, Dick entered the real estate business in Annapolis and served many years on the Anne Arundel County Board of Realtors. n Albert “Buzz” Betzel, Capt. USN (Ret.) passed away on May 19. After graduation from Severn, Buzz attended the Naval Academy Class of 1942, where he specialized in electrical engineering. In December ’41, his class was accelerated into service, and he fought as a submarine commander in the Pacific for which he was awarded the Silver Star. After 30 years in the Navy, he joined the National Science Foundation’s polar research department, and served as manager of the Palmer Station in Antarctica during the 1980s.

Near Misses
LCDR Paul Allen Riley ’44 USN (Ret) takes readers on a wild ride in his new book Near Misses. The review below is courtesy of Jack Riley, Amazon.com “What could be considered my original near miss was that I was born at all.” So begins Near Misses: A Naval Aviator’s Story, by Paul Allen Riley, who has written the detailed true story of his close brushes with death as a fighter pilot at the dawn of the jet age. For any reader with experience as a pilot, or really any aviation buff, Near Misses is a must-read, and is a clear thumbs-up. The writing is clear and concise, if sprinkled a bit too liberally with the use of aviation terms for those of us whose flying decisions are limited to whether to purchase the headphones for the in-flight movie. The jargon does not obscure the story, though, but rather is a necessary component of a book that is, at its heart, about adventures in flying. One cannot write a legal thriller without using phrases like “verdict” and “presumed innocent,” and I suppose one cannot write a book about flying without shifting one’s gaze to one’s “gyro horizon instrument.” In any event, the level of detail of the author’s recollection of particular flights that occurred in the 1950s, now over a halfcentury ago, is no less than astounding, and must be the result of a flight log religiously maintained, combined with a sharp memory for detail. In sum, Near Misses should be a textbook for all Student Naval Aviators, a fireside companion to retired military aviators now freed to muse on the good fortune of their own survival, and a reminder to the rest of us of the serious risks a few take on behalf of the security and liberty of all. Near Misses caused this reader to reflect that, when we consider our own “near misses” in life, we must begin to realize, as the author seems to conclude, that whatever setbacks we have been through, mere survival to any ripe age is, after all, a miracle of sorts, even for those of us who have never lit the afterburners of our experimental jet aircraft, or been catapulted off the narrow deck of a surging aircraft carrier in high winds and rolling seas to have “slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.”
destroyed. While searching the road near MAJON-NI, LCDR Irad Blair Oxley, Operations Officer of VF-172, was hit with ground fire. Absence of radio transmission indicated that the pilot was hit. His aircraft dived and crashed into the ground. There was no possibility of escape and Oxley was reported as killed in action.”

Philip M. Carter, 80, died August 23, 2011. After graduation from Severn, Phil attended the U.S. Naval Academy and Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. Until his retirement in 1990, Phil was employed by IBM at Fishkill and Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Many of his happiest hours were spent with family and friends on golf courses, tennis courts and ski slopes. n News from Bill Fisher: “Fall and winter are around the corner. Our 65th reunion will soon be a year and half away. Please start thinking about coming back to Severn for a good time. The Alumni Office and I haven’t heard from anyone this last few months so I decided to include the following comments that I submitted too late for the Winter 2011 Bridge. ‘Since our last column I have been in contact with Char20
lie Taylor, Sharon & Bill Hargrave and Gurney Sloan. All are well. Charlie asked about Casey Hernandez ’47. It turns out they live 23 miles from each other in Florida. Sharon & Bill were calling a mutual friend of ours and I happened to answer the phone. They live in Annapolis and I hope we will be able to get together soon. I received a very nice letter from Gurney. He and his wife of 57 years live on a bluff above the Delaware River in Bucks County, PA. After Severn, Gurney soon decided he was no longer interested in the USNA and subsequently graduated from Lehigh. After a tour with USAF and a period with a pharmaceutical company he decided to change directions and attended law school at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in corporate and securities law. Gurney retired from practice in 1997 but is still interested in business activities and is ready for exciting new ventures. Gurney and his wife have three children. Their son is a top executive of a busy and successful political marketing and fund raising firm; daughter Amanda who
spent 15 years as a stage manager on Broadway is now busy with two children in Palo Alto; and daughter Christina and her husband are involved in political activities in D.C. Gurney still follows Severn’s progress but has not seen the campus since the fifties. He was fortunate to run into Mr. Teel several times in Dunedin, Florida in the late fifties while Mr. Teel was sitting on a pier fishing. He observed, “What a wonderful man he was.” Another story that verifies the impact Mr. Teel and Severn had on each of us. It makes one wonder what service each of us can now provide to the school through financial or other support.’ Enjoy the fall. Take good care. Bill (Skinhead)”
From Nick: Dear classmates, 2012 will be our 60th reunion. so mark the weekend of May 1113 on your calendars and come back to School for the reunion. They are always a great time. From John Norton: John Leocha and I are organizing our 40th reunion, which will take place during the 2012 Alumni Weekend scheduled for May 11, 12, and 13. John and I argue about politics from time to time, but we are agreed that we’d like to make this a big event. Severn will be hosting our reunion dinner at the school on
Saturday, May 12. We will be contacting you soon with more details. Please don’t hesitate to let us know now if you are planning to attend, or if you’d like to help. And if you have any ideas that will make it a more attractive, memorable event, we’d like to hear those ideas now, too. As an inducement to you, John and I are asking The SCOOTER Store to donate a Jazzy 1170 XL Plus Power Chair, with 16” knobby drive wheels, as a door prize. Please don’t argue with us! As most of you know, my brother, Harold Norton ’74, passed away in July. Denise Tray Rosson ’78 kindly helped me organize a memorial gathering at Severn for his classmates and his Severna Park friends. Liz Mann Carlin ’74, Mark Fitzsimmons ’76, Steve Fromyer ’74, Steve Hill ’74, John Leocha ’72, Jeff Popham ’74, Ann ’76 and Geoff Riefe ’73, Steve Shenk ’74, Susan Snyder ’76, Jim Trost ’74, and Gary Zorn ’74 were among those who came to visit and remember Harold. We scattered some of Harold’s ashes at Severn. Joe Burke ’94 catered the gathering, and Ann and Geoff brought terrific chocolate mint brownies, Harold’s favorite flavor combination. Many more of his classmates, teachers, and friends from Severn sent kind, thoughtful notes to my family. We are grateful, and I know Harold would have felt honored. Thank you.”

DAVID TROY ’89
David Troy describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur, software developer, and community builder” and may we add to that description a very busy, talented and visionary individual. Some may remember the company he founded in 1995, ToadNet, which grew to be one of the larger internet service providers serving the mid-Atlantic. The listing below, pulled from David’s website, davetroy.com, is just a small sampling of the many projects spearheaded and designed by David Troy. Visit davetroy.com and be prepared to be wowed. 410Labs (2010-present; co-founder, CEO) 410Labs is focused exclusively on the development of innovative technology products for the web and mobile environments. Products include length-limited email service Shortmail, knowledge-sharing service Replyz, and email-metrics and management service Mailstrom.
BmoreFiber (2010-present; co-organizer) In February 2010, Google announced plans to consider building a fiber optic network infrastructure in one or more locations in the United States. I worked with a diverse group of volunteers, the office of the Mayor of Baltimore, the Greater Baltimore Committee, and the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore to assemble a comprehensive response to Google’s Request for Information. This process launched a city-wide conversation about infrastructure, innovation, and how Baltimore can benefit from telecommunications investment. Regardless of what happens with Google, we’ve started a process that will yield multiple dividends in the future.
Beehive Baltimore (2008-present; founder) Beehive Baltimore is a co-working community of free-lancers, entrepreneurs, and other creative professionals sharing a common workspace in Baltimore. The purpose of the community is to have a social work environment that provides the great amenities of an office space while still allowing all the members the freedom and creativity to work on what they want, when they want. One of the great by-products of the community is the potential each member has to easily collaborate with one another. Beehive Baltimore is part of the larger co-working movement that is taking root all around the world. By participating in a collaborative community of professionals, new opportunities emerge and relationships lead to new business and new ideas.
Baltimore Angels (2009-present; founder) A new generation of angel investing comes to Baltimore (Angel - an affluent individual who provides capital for a business start-up, usually in exchange for convertible debt or ownership equity. Angel investors may organize themselves into angel groups or angel networks to share research and pool their investment capital. Angels typically invest their own funds, unlike venture capitalists, who manage the pooled money of others in a professionally-managed fund. wikipedia.com). If you are a tech entrepreneur or community-minded investor, please get in touch with Baltimore Angels. This is not your father’s investment group. Investors are current and cashed-out entrepreneurs who have “done it” and can help other entrepreneurs advance to the next stage.

From Heather: “Hi class of 1991! I heard that our 20th Reunion was a fantastic event and I was so sorry to have missed it. I was visiting Annapolis in August and got to catch up with Carrie MacVean Grimes, Cheryl Helman Madden, and Melissa White Morsberger who all enjoyed seeing everyone and attending the alumni activities. A big shout out to Casey Cole who I heard made the trip from Colorado, and Alexi Dzurec coming from New Mexico! Impressive! A big thanks to Kristin Gillis Long and Carrie MacVean Grimes for their efforts with this event. n Melissa White Morsberger shares that she is doing well and is excited to announce the birth of their third child, Molly Elizabeth, born on February 1, 2011. She weighed 8 lb. 5 oz. at birth and is showered with love by her two big sisters Abigail (10) and Katherine (8). Melissa and her husband, Steve, continue to live in Catonsville. Melissa is an elementary school nurse for Baltimore County Public Schools, and has been really fortunate to be able to bring both of her older girls with her to school each day. She had a
great time visiting with other members of the Class of 1991 at the evening reunion but was very sorry to have missed the picnic. She and her family enjoyed spending a week in Ocean City this summer as well as an amazing two weeks in the Adirondacks, which is their annual family vacation spot. She is looking forward to another great school year but isn’t excited to get back into the balancing act of work, family, and all of the craziness of having kids in activities during the school year! She wishes everyone well and asks that more of you send updates on your lives. n So what a great surprise it was to be reading the July 2011 of Food and Wine magazine and see Andrew Dehart’s name in an article about hunting lionfish! Andy is currently the Director of Fishes and Aquatic Invertebrates for the National Aquarium in Washington DC. 20 years later, he is still....‘Shark Man’.” Here is a link to the article: www.foodandwine.com/articles/ lion fish-invasion-a-guide-tohunting-and-fishing

Katy Shelor and Severn alumni, Anne Ruchman, Nichole Marks, and Sarah Snyder, gathered together to celebrate at Katy’s bachelorette party in DC. Katy says, “I flew into DC from LA for my bachelorette weekend in August. We all live in different cities now and don’t get to see each other nearly enough. I’m getting married October 1st at my parents’ house in Richmond, VA! My fiance Jonathan is also a TV producer and we are actually working together on a new series for SyFy right up until the wedding. We are excited to finally be a “Mr. and Mrs.” and for our families to finally meet. He is English and they are all flying in a few days before. It will be a battle of the accents: English vs. Southern. It remains to be seen if anyone will be able to understand each other!” n Doug
Mayer currently resides in Boca Raton, Florida, where is he is working as U.S. Senate candidate Adam Hasner’s communications director. n Ashleigh Korves writes, “I recently completed my podiatric surgical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and have moved back to the Annapolis area. In August, I joined Foot and Ankle Associates of the MidAtlantic, formerly Columbia Foot and Ankle Associates, with offices in Annapolis and Clarksville. I would love to catch up with any Severn alums living locally. And if anyone has a foot or ankle issue, feel free to visit me at the office!” n Jane and Carrie Friend ’02 traveled to Tanzania this summer. Jane taught English and math to children in a small village called Tarakea near the border of Kenya. Carrie met her there and the two climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together. They had the best guide on the mountain. If you’re interested in making the trek, feel free to contact either one of them!

squeezing it all in to 3 years instead of the usual 4. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and creative writing, with Cum Laude honors, as well as athletic honors (I was an AllOld Dominion Athletic Conference Honorable Mention for Division III women’s lacrosse). Because of my writing skills, a recruiting firm hired me for their database marketing coordinator position, and now I have a real, full-time job, and it isn’t even really related to English! I definitely attribute many of my skill sets to my education at Severn. Severn prepared me not only for college, but for life: of course Severn taught me math, science, and library research techniques, but I also learned team work, patience, professionalism, selfconfidence, pride, and respect. I really believe that Severn laid the foundation for me to grow into a better person as I got through college. Severn’s teachers truly care about their students, and for that reason they really are the backbone of the school. I know from first hand experience that it is extremely possible to become the kind of person you’ve always dreamed of. I really feel very strongly that a positive attitude and gratefulness can take you a long way, and that everyone has the tools within themselves to succeed.”
This award is conferred upon students who exemplify a “model scholar.” Taylor was selected by Scholar’s Program faculty for exhibiting scholarly attitudes and excelling in academics, research, and other scholarly activities, such as discovery projects, service learning and/or artistic undertakings. n Craig Evans “Van” Eney, Jr., 20, died June 16 in Annapolis. After graduation from Severn where Van was an avid lacrosse player, he was recruited to play for RandolphMacon College from ’09-’11. He was an accomplished wakeboarder, snowboarder, surfer and ice hockey player. He loved boating, crabbing, music, cooking, writing, his cat Mango, and above all, he cherished his many dear friends and family. n Olivia League completed a semester internship at the National Criminal Justice Association in Washington DC. She spent this past summer in VA to complete a parol internship in Poly Sci for Roanoke College.

farewell to Woody Wooddell ’73 as our Alumni Association chairman. After two years of serving as chairman of the Alumni Board, the demands of his thriving dental education center and other professional endeavors made it necessary for him to pass the leadership baton. He will, however, remain on the board where he will continue to work on the alumni career networking program. “Woody has done a terrific job for the last two years guiding the alumni association to its current healthy state,” said Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “We appreciate all that he has done and will continue to do to support Severn.” Stepping up as co-chairs for the Association will be Carrie MacVean Grimes ’91 and Mark Carroll ’83. Carrie and Mark both expressed their appreciation for Wooddell’s leadership and are looking ahead for continued growth within the program. “We look forward to working together to build an even stronger association Woody Wooddell ’73 to support the mission of the school in whatever way we can,” said Carrie. “Let us know if you have any ideas or would like to be involved,” Mark added.
Photos, top to bottom: Chase Sutton ’06, Sunni Ray ’06 and Brendan Lane ’06 attended the Career Networking Dinner; Graham Ellison ’07 pays close attention along with other classmates; Charlie Bauer ’00 and Bob Graw ’85 represented the technology field at the Career Networking event. More than 100 young alums attended the inaugural Career Networking Dinner this summer, sponsored by the Severn Alumni Association. Established alums and parents representing a variety of fields including media, arts, architecture, construction, marketing and entrepreneurship, took resumes and chatted with our college students and recent college grads. Drew McCarl ’04 and Nick Larkin ’03, professional recruiters from Opal Staff and ARINC respectively, gave presentations on what today’s companies are seeking in their employees.
Woody said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to be involved in the resurgence of the Alumni Association’s presence at Severn. From day one everyone on the Executive Council has devoted themselves to the creation of our vision and putting it into action. He added, “It is exciting to see the relationships being built between all ages of alumni and Severn. The strong leadership of Carrie and Mark will assure the continuance of the Alumni Association’s enrichment of the Severn School community.”

SEVERN SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011
t he
A N N UA L F U N D
An absolute necessity in the life of the school, our Annual Fund supports current programs and students at Severn in the most immediate sense. Whether it’s support for our Mock Trial team or an outing to the National Press Club for our budding journalists, the Annual Fund is here to assist. Your support of the Annual Fund is part of a tradition of generous giving by loyal alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff. When you give to the Annual Fund, you join others in being stewards of an educational tradition that is distinctive. Unrestricted operating funds (the Annual Fund) close the gap between what tuition covers and what it actually costs to run the School. We are proud of our community and the challenge to our students to pursue excellence in character, conduct and scholarship. Severn School students have been empowered by our dedicated faculty with a lifelong curiosity for learning, and we call on our friends annually to help us continue this significant stewardship. Every gift is important to Severn School, regardless of its size, and we ask everyone to join us in this collective effort. Thank you for your generosity. Severn has established a series of Annual Fund giving levels to acknowledge the generous support of our donors. Gifts of every size are sincerely appreciated. Patron Levels:

CASH GIFTS Most gifts to Severn School are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Such gifts are tax-deductible and are vital to the support of Severn School’s annual, capital and endowment needs. Credit cards (Master Card, Visa and American Express) are accepted. Mail your contributions to: Severn School, The Boone House, 116 Maple Avenue, Severna Park, MD 21146. You may also call Holly Carroll at 410-647-7701 x 2259 or go to www.severnschool.com to make an online gift. SECURITIES Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, and mutual funds are exempt from capital gains taxes. If the securities have been owned for more than one year, a gift of these assets can provide the donor with a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the security. Securities can be electronically transferred by your broker to Severn School’s brokerage account (see information below). MAKING GIFTS OF STOCK Electronic transfer is the easiest method for stock transfer because your gift is valued on the day you transfer it. The value of your gift is determined by the average of the high/low price of your stock on the day of transfer. The toll-free number for our account at Citigroup, Smith Barney is 1-800-638-9165. Our broker is J. Kirk Jay ’87. Our account # 58E-084491156Y and the ‘DTC” transfer number is 0418. Please call Kirk Jay or Mary Salsich at 410-647-7701 x 2261 or e-mail m.salsich@severnschool. com at Severn if you have any questions or to notify them if you transfer a gift. You can also send us unsigned stock certificates via certified mail. However, the related stock power must be guaranteed by a bank officer or investment broker and be sent to Severn School in a separate envelope.

GIFTS IN MEMORY OR TO HONOR Each year Severn receives many gifts in memory of or to honor classmates, parents, teachers, students and friends. When memorial or honoring gifts are received, Severn notifies the family. In some instances, special funds are established which may become capital or endowed funds. LIFE INCOME GIFTS Gifts of appreciated property can generate income for you with positive tax benefits. One example is the formation of a charitable remainder trust. BEQUESTS Every member of the Severn School community should have an up-to-date will. We hope you will consider Severn School as one of your beneficiaries. Some people specify an amount, some a percentage of their estate. All bequests are sincerely appreciated. If you let us know, you are then a member of the Severn School 1914 Society. LIFE INSURANCE Should you have a life insurance policy that has outlived its original purposes, you might consider putting the money to work for Severn School. You can amend the existing policy so that Severn School is the beneficiary. GIFTS-IN-KIND Artwork, antiques, computer equipment, books, tickets for theatrical and sporting events, and valued collections currently qualify for charitable deductions when their use relates to the education Severn School provides. We welcome inquiries about such gifts. MATCHING GIFTS Call your personnel office to find out if your company will double or even triple your donation to Severn School. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.
