Keller appointed Middle School Head Severn School is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Daniel Keller as Middle School Head, effective July 1, 2014. Mr. Keller replaces Dr. Gray Smith, who left Severn at the end of June to become head of Harford Day School. Dr. Smith's departure was announced in November. A Baltimore native, Mr. Keller graduated from Towson University with a B.S. in English and earned two master’s degrees from Towson and Johns Hopkins University, respectively. He also holds professional certification from Johns Hopkins in educational leadership for independent schools. Previously chair of the English department of Severn’s Middle School, and has taught and coached at Severn since 2010. Prior to teaching at Severn, Keller taught and coached at the Barrie School in Silver Spring, and St. Michael’s Country Day School in Newport, RI, and was an adjunct English Professor at Towson University. “While Mr. Keller’s experience and talents are extensive, it is his love and appreciation for

kids, the learning process, and independent school life, that truly impressed those who have worked with him and the search committee,” commented Severn School Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “In addition, his educational philosophy echoes the foundational principles of Severn’s mission.” More than 60 candidates applied for the position. A search committee made up of faculty, trustees, parents, and students unanimously selected Mr. Keller for the role. Nearly 200 boys and girls are currently enrolled in Severn’s Middle School, comprised of grades 6 through 8. “Clearly, Severn’s Middle School is in a good place,” reflected Mr. Keller. “Going forward, I see the division growing from that strong foundation. An excellent middle school is lead with students at the center, showcases quality teaching and learning, and exudes a caring culture, where faculty are a supporting presence and take time to know and value each student.”

Each year, the Severn School Alumni Association’s Athletic Hall of Fame committee, chaired by Stacey Hendricks Manis ’81 (Annapolis), recognizes Severn alumni who have in the past contributed to Severn’s athletic excellence as player, coach
and/or athletic director. At least 10 years must pass before his or her last participation with Severn School athletics and his or her induction. HEADMASTER DOUG LAGARDE'S GRADUATION ADDRESS R E T U R N ON I N V E S T M E N T One can’t open or click on a newspaper or financial magazine today without encountering an article asking the question: Is college worth the money or what is the return on investment (ROI) of a college degree? Forbes, Huffington Post, Business Week, and The Economist have all ranked colleges according to an ROI based dubiously on salaries of graduates, graduation rates, student debt and other such criteria. President Obama in his State of the Union called for a college scorecard ranking colleges on similar criteria. He stated, “My administration will release a new college scorecard that parents and students can use to compare schools based on a simple criteria: where you can get the most bang for your buck.” It’s not hard to understand why the ROI of a four year degree is under assault these days with a lousy job market coupled with skyrocketing tuitions. What’s not easy is deciphering the ROI of a college degree despite the claims of many publications and of President Obama. How might one best maximize the ROI of a college degree? In a word, diversify. Over the four year period, build your personal skills portfolio such that you gain both specific high-yield short-term skills and transferable slow-growth long-term skills.
DI V E R SI F Y I NG YO U R SK I L L SE T The high-yield specific skill du jour is learning to code for computer programming. Today’s experts are eager to promote the idea that everyone should learn to code. My opinion? Don't learn how to code unless you want to. If becoming a programmer is appealing to you, great. But seeking employment on any one hard, specific skill is outdated thinking. Training students narrowly for jobs they can immediately occupy upon graduation is shortsighted. Frankly, the last thing a student graduating today needs is a narrowly tailored education that will set him or her up for their first job, at the expense of developing transferable skills – like interpretation, judgment, and discernment. The global economy will twist and turn in the next 20 years rendering virtually all jobs in 2014 unrecognizable in 2034. Harvard President Drew Faust recently wrote, “It is far better to create in students the capacities to confront the circumstances of life with a combination of realism and resilience and with habits of mind and skills
6
THE BRIDGE
of analysis that transcend the present.” In other words, look beyond the immediate and diversify your skill set. Develop high-yield first job specific skills but make sure you also develop blue-chip transferable skills like problem solving, critical thinking, persuasive written and oral communication, and the ability to work effectively and resourcefully in teams. Thomas Friedman, NY Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winning author, interviewed Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of people operations at Google and noted that “Google [has] determined that GPA's and test scores are worthless as a criteria for hiring.” There are certainly hiring attributes Google does looks for - general cognitive ability, not IQ, but learning ability; the ability to process on the fly, the ability to pull together disparate bits of information to come up with novel solutions. They also look for leadership, specifically the ability to know when to exercise power and when to relinquish it. He added, “Your degree is not a proxy for your ability to do any job.” Increasingly today and certainly in the future, what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know. According to innovation expert, Tony Wagner, content, today, has become a commodity – growing exponentially, ever changing and available in the palm of your hand on a personal device. The world no longer cares how much you know. It cares about and pays handsomely for how you apply your knowledge and how you use it to problem solve. Please know, it’s not that content knowledge is unimportant, but it is the easiest to acquire therefore it makes it the least important as compared to transferable skills.
P U R SU I NG YOU R PAS SION So my advice to today’s graduates is to diversify your skills portfolio. Learn to code or learn to be an expert in whatever specific skill set you want to pursue but, also, pursue a passion for the simple sake of doing something you love. The pursuit of real interests develops focus, selfdiscipline, perseverance, the willingness to accept setback, retool and move forward again. Passions cultivate transferable skills. Graduates, as you leave Severn to expand your skills portfolio, draw strength from our great heritage here at Severn and embrace the future with eager confidence. You carry with you the values learned here: that you will see leadership as an opportunity to serve, that you will make honesty the yardstick of your judgments and perseverance the engine of your ideas, and that you keep your passions alive as you strive for excellence in whatever it is you choose to do.

As a senior, I was part of a team that wrote an updated history of the school with teacher Mr. Gray. When some of the alumni wrote answers to our questions they usually addressed it to “the boys.” Mr. Gray gently reminded some of the older alumni that Severn was co-ed now and the nicest gentleman wrote a special note to say he presumed I’d be the toughest guy on the football team with a name like Spikes!"

I N M E M O R I A M Andrew “Drew” Storey, 27, died October 18, 2013. After graduation, Andrew attended Arizona State University, majoring in sociology and Spanish. He received a B.A. in December 2006, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Honors earned included Phi Beta Kappa and the University President's Award. While at Arizona State, Andrew studied abroad at the university in Alicante, Spain, and then at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. After college graduation, Drew worked as a claims representative for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Phoenix, Ariz. for two years. In September 2009, he decided to return to Cairo, a city he loved above all others. He lived near Tahrir Square for four years, experiencing the revolution, the chaotic aftermath, and the removal of President Morsi from office. While in Cairo, he worked in refugee assistance, helped combat sexual harassment, and taught English. In October 2013, he left Cairo for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Two days later, he passed away. Drew's parents, Jim and Elaine Storey, plan to fund a scholarship in his honor to aid graduate students in international affairs. Jim has begun writing Drew's biography, focusing on his life
in Egypt and the events that led up to his death. Classmate and friend, Joe Keenan ’03. reflects on Andrew’s passing: “I was Andrew´s longest and closest friend. We shared many memories together at Severn, in college at ASU, a semester in Spain, and a couple years after college in Arizona. I have never really met anyone quite like Andrew and for those that had gotten to know him I am confident you would say the same thing. Andrew always lived his life on his own terms and was open to just about anything as long as the experience was unique and something he had never done before. Andrew was also an incredibly smart, creative, social and funny person. His legacy to me was his steadfast desire to take as much from this life as possible; to live in places that make you uncomfortable; to reach out and make friends with strangers and people who are different; to try just about anything for the sake of the experience. It´s a mystery to me how he could take as much out of life as he did during his time alive but ultimately be the one to end his own life. Rest in peace, Andrew. You touched the lives of many people in your short time on this earth and you will be greatly missed!” Right: Andrew Storey '03

I've been fortunate enough to start getting my feet wet with legal research and research projects, processing and overseeing foreclosures, and observing all the behind the scenes and daily functioning of the court house. I've been exposed to amazing attorneys and have been fortunate enough to observe multiple trials, whether it be, divorce or family law trials, murder trials, adoptions, child abuse, etc. I've been able to see firsthand many different assistant states attorneys and criminal defense attorneys interact with Judge Wachs in regards to preparation for trial with things such as motions and pleas. I would not have been able to land this internship without the Severn community and I’m forever grateful for all the connections that Severn has made for me.” Cole Bailey of the Tufts men's lacrosse team, the NESCAC Player of the Year and a USILA First Team All-American this spring, was the 2014 recipient of the USILA's LT.
