Introduction to ABOUT RFM RFM are a privately owned agricultural dealership with three owner`s actively involved in the business and who live within the area in which we trade. RFM was formed in 1991 by Russell Brett, Tony Dudfield and Andrew Stuffins. Prior to RFM all three directors worked in the agricultural machinery industry: RFM quickly became one of the UK’s largest Case-IH dealers with locations at Ross on Wye, Fosse Cross & Raglan, later expanding to include Martley. During 2005 the merger between Case-IH and NH was taking its toll on RFM and led to our most difficult decision, RFM were approached by AGCO to sell Massey Ferguson and Fendt products at our Ross on Wye, Raglan and Martley depots (but not Fosse Cross). Although we had many successful years with Case-IH we decided to bring about a seismic change to our business. We could clearly see that a brighter future for the company lay ahead with AGCO, & reluctantly decided to sell our Fosse Cross business to facilitate the changeover. Massey Ferguson and Fendt products although owned by the same parent are very different tractors, allowing us to offer a choice of mainstream or premium to our customers, there is not another manufacturer that provides this choice. Since the change in tractor franchise in January 2006, we have become firmly established with MF and Fendt, enabling us to complete our wish to offer a product portfolio which is made up of the very best in quality agricultural products - MF, JCB, Fendt, Kuhn, McHale, Great Plains. This line up of products has enabled RFM to take our sales turnover above £27 million, our ambition for the future is to continue to grow with our product range by offering the best after sales service in the region. In June 2012 Tony Dudfield retired & his stake in the business was acquired by Paddy Kennedy (another thank you to Tony for his contribution to RFM, we still see him regularly as he is now working with his daughter & husband on their local farm/contracting business, which we know he is enjoying). From this month Andrew Stuffins will take more of a back seat & whilst still retaining his share in the business & still being actively involved, he has passed the bulk of his responsibilities to his son Mike who takes the role of director of finance. In this edition of machinery matters we set out our range of machinery, please keep it in your office for reference for the next twelve months, pricing of course is at the time of writing which may change subject to stock & manufacturer`s terms (all prices are +vat) We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have placed business with RFM, we totally appreciate the pressures the weather & volatile markets have put on you all, Thank you. Finally should any customer feel the need to call one of the company directors we are always available to take your call: Russell Brett Paddy Kennedy Mike Stuffins 01989 768811 01886 888987 01989 768811
SAVE £’000’S IN TAX BY CAREFULLY PLANNING MACHINERY PURCHASES BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! For companies with a December financial year end the first tranche of the £250,000 Annual Investment Allowance ran out on 31st December 2013 - unspent allowances can’t be carried forward. The clock is also ticking for those companies with a 31st March year end or unincorporated businesses with a tax year ending 5th April 2014. After these dates, the available AIA drops to £187,500 before finally reverting to £25,000 on 1st January 2015. This important tax incentive allows 100% tax relief in the first year. The AIA was designed to encourage businesses to invest up to £250,000 in plant, machinery, commercial vehicles and even fixtures such as a generator (new or used). Depending on the business’ rate of tax it is an open invitation to secure the equivalent of a 20% to 45% subsidy. Better still - if you acquire the plant via a Hire Purchase agreement the acquisition, for tax purposes, is treated as if cash had been paid. For a sole trader or partnership, making sufficient profits, investing £250,000 in plant and paying 40% income tax could be the equivalent of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) paying the £25,000 deposit and the first annual payments of 75,000 (net of interest) on a three year agreement! For a 20% Corporation tax payer it equates to HMRC paying for the same £25,000 deposit plus £25,000 of the first year’s payments on the same 3 year HP deal. If you pay higher rates of tax you could save even more. If you have not already planned how to maximise the benefit speak to your accountant, before the allowance is lost.

EXPORT IS VITAL FOR UK AG MACHINERY INDUSTRY The UK tractor and handler market has shrunk to approx 18,000 units per year, due to larger farms running fewer tractors and the ever increasing cost. However the market is still a large number and that is thanks to the export trade for used and nearly new. Approximately 9000 tractors are exported from the UK £150 million, whilst used imports are approximately £15 million, 70% is exported to EU member states at an average of £20,000 per unit. The remaining 30% to the rest of the world at an average of £11,000 per unit. Collective sales like Cambridge account for some of these sales. Dealers need to sell to export to ensure the wheels keep turning, some imagine that selling it export means you can get rid of the “problem tractors”, that is not an option, our export customers deal with us with the confidence that the unit will be as described, without mechanical issues and free from finance. Most export customers are repeat buyers and will pay more for peace of mind. The average value of RFM exports which include JCB and Pearson is markedly different to the UK average at £54,000 per unit! Obviously £ v Euro rate has a large bearing on values, for instance the rate in 2010 was 0.92, today it is 0.82, which means the same £54,000 today is worth 7000 Euro less than it was in 2010! The world financial crisis has taken its toll on higher hour kit as Spain and Greece for instance has come to a grinding halt. JCB build their own engines: design control has allowed JCB to avoid additional bulk and vision reduction by avoiding ad blue and diesel particulate filters. Not only that the EcoMAX engine provides more torque and up to 23 more HP. Yet it is more efficient than the outgoing engines and can save £4,676 over 3 years on fuel based on 1000 hours per year (model compared 541-70). Three steering modes: 2ws for roading; 4ws for tight spaces; and crab steer for close to walls and buildings. Compact wheelbase and large steering lock angles save time. JCB build their own transmission: high back off brakes reduce drag during roading and rehandling. Torque lock avoids power loss in 5th and 6th gear.

JCB build their own boom and chassis: built to last. The boom is mounted low in the chassis for a rigid structure and maximum over the shoulder visibility. JCB make individual chassis for each category of handler rather than one chassis which has to be counterbalanced for differing lift capacities. The JCB has thick 25mm side plates. Attention to detail on weld ends and long weld seems increase strength and elastic high tensile steel is used for absorption of load forces. JCB’s main lift ram is centrally mounted on the boom and assister ram’s are located symmetrically. In comparison the Manitou is offset which could result in greater twisting of the boom when raised. The JCB boom features key hole casting whereas Manitou do not recess and JCB’s boom is 20% larger in design and has more overlap. At the boom nose JCB feature a 1 piece design compared to a 2 piece Manitou structure and JCB avoid welding in the key stress area. You won’t find exposed pipework on the JCB and you will find a higher proportion of metal pipes to rubber hose reducing the possibility of leaking/bursting. JCB manufacture their own axles: which feature large 28cm diameter hubs rather than 21.5cm Dana Spicer unit on some competition which have an offset mounting to the chassis! JCB also benefits from a wide angle universal joint. The steering ram is fully protected and there is no ball and socket joint. JCB build their own cabs: the interior is automotive quality. The load monitor is in the line of sight. The seat is in a high position offering superb visibility, it is the largest of cabs with bags of leg room and a very low noise level. Comfort is guaranteed. JCB offer their own warranty extension option of up to 5 years. JCB have unique keys and are fitted with live link tracking that achieves Thatcham 3 approval, reducing vehicle insurance.
All of the above help to contribute to a machine that sets and lasts the pace and rewards the purchaser with the highest resale value. www.rossfarm.co.uk | MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014

WORK HARD AT ROSE HILL Mark Bennion is the third generation to farm Rose Hill Farm, Dymock, on the Hereford-Gloucestershire border. The 1100 Acres is mainly down to wheat and oil seed rape with herbage seed and a small acreage is used for maize or rented out for potatoes. A recent addition to the enterprise is 100 acres of cider apples grown for Weston’s who are in close proximity to the land. Composting is a very large part of the business today which employs five full time staff, two on the composting side and one farming, leaving two shared between composting and farming depending on the work load. In 2004, Mark began the composting business taking 5000 tonnes of green waste from the local district council, in 2007 “in vessel composting units” were constructed to deal with food and composting waste. The material heats up to 60°C and is then removed and re-packed twice. Last year a one megawatt anaerobic digester was installed which consumes 25,000 tonnes of food waste, topped up with a small amount of grass or maize silage. The whole site now covers 2 ½ acres of buildings and concrete pads at an investment of over £5 million. The total plant now handles 45,000 tonnes per year including all of the food waste from Gloucestershire and some of Monmouthshire’s, along with some of the green waste from: Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. 22,000 tonnes of compost are processed annually and are turned weekly for 12 weeks using two JCB 426 loading shovels. These machines turn half a million tonnes of compost every year. A small amount of compost is bagged for the council. The bulk is used at Rose Hill Farm and sold to other farmer’s, providing a
valuable source of organic matter with useful amounts of NPK and a liming effect, 18,000 tonnes of liquid, digestate is spread using a Joskin tanker and solo disk for outlying ground and for ground closer to the farm an underground main feeds an umbilical system. The use of digestate provides huge savings on bagged fertiliser and the compost improves soil fertility and soil structure. “JCB’s work hard here, our loading shovels clock up 2000 hours per year. The 550-80 which replaced a 536-60 is an excellent back up for the shovels, it will load a 29 tonne wagon in ten bucket fulls and is a valuable tool for high reach maintenance. The TM310s has very good visibility and excellent traction, especially useful for loading muck in the field, and conducts most of the farm duties. JCB enable us to run one brand as they produce the full range of loading equipment, and back up is local and agricultural which we value. The reliability is good and the resale values are high, it is a total package”.

TRANSMISSION OPTIONS
Over the last 2 years virtually the whole range of Massey Ferguson tractors have changed. New cabs, new engines, new features, new look. Here we explain the transmission options and transmission controllers now available.
All models from 85 to 400HP (5600/6600/7600/8600/8700) feature Power Control Lever. This is mounted on the left hand side of the steering column & enables finger tip control of de-clutching, forward or reverse and increases/ decreases in speed. All models – All transmissions.
3 Transmission options Dyna-4 (4 speed Powershift 16x16)
Dyna-VT (Constantly Variable CVT)
Dyna-6 (6 speed Powershift 24x24) The original Dyna-VT transmission is a true testament to precision engineering; guaranteed productivity , complete operator comfort and optimum fuel efficiency at all times. Further, consistent enhancements such as Dynamic Tractor Management (Dyna-TM) make it the most intuitive transmission on the market.
The Dyna-4 and Dyna-6 transmissions are reassuringly simple to operate and control with the unique Massey Ferguson Power Control Lever mounted on the left-hand side of the steering column and the transmission control lever on the right-hand console. All functions of the transmission can be controlled easily without needing to depress the clutch pedal. All information on range selection and Powershift ratios can be found on the dashboard. To ensure smooth progress, Speedmatching is specified as standard to ensure that the most appropriate Powershift ratio is automatically selected when range changes are made. All models have Autodrive as standard (except smaller 5600 Series models where it is optional) This is an automated function for Auto Upshift and Auto Downshift depending on engine load. Dyna-4 is standard on the 5600 Series and 6600 Series. Dyna-6 is an option on the 5600 Series & 6600 Series & Standard on 7600 Series 8
Stepless precision Dyna-VT is amazingly simple to operate and works extremely well in differing conditions. There’s no shifting of gears, no jolts and no breaks in traction or power. The unique Power Control lever makes forward/reverse shuttling and speed change convenient and hassle-free. The ‘Supervisor’ The ‘Supervisor’ is on continuous stand-by and activates when the engine speed falls under load. The benefit of the ‘Supervisor’ is that even when the load on the engine is increased and engine speed drops, the transmission will automatically reduce forward speed to maintain total power, whether in PTO applications, field work or transportation. When used in conjunction with SV1 and SV2, which set a specified forward speed, the tractor will then operate at maximum output as load fluctuates as well as automatically adjusting the tractor back to the required speed. Dyna-VT is an option for 6600 & 7600 Series & standard on 8600/8700 Series

Dynamic Tractor Management (Dyna-TM) Intelligent machine management for optimum fuel efficiency
The Engine Power Management allows for the continuous delivery of power under various conditions and applications, increasing productivity whilst lowering fuel consumption. Power Management is an intelligent ‘extra power’ feature which works to ensure optimum efficiency for the operator. The engine responds with variable extra power delivery in demanding PTO, field and transport applications and rigorous hydraulic operations, so you automatically get power when you need it the most . DYNA-4 DYNA-6 BENEFITS Dyna-4 • Optimum field performance, four range changes provide 16 forward and 16 reverse speeds, all available without having to use the clutch pedal! Dyna-6 • 6 Dynashift (powershift) ratios • Maximum productivity with 24 forward gears and 24 reverse gears • Power Control lever with three functions on one lever – Forward/Reverse shuttle, declutch, upshift and downshift • Pedal-free operation • 9 speeds between 4km/h and 12km/h • 40km/h or 50km/h maximum speed available at low engine speed(Eco) • ECO feature allows top speeds to be achieved at low engine revs, offering a reduction in noise and fuel consumption • Cruise control speeds (SV1/SV2) • Brake pedal pressure puts the transmission to neutral • Reverse shuttle aggressiveness adjustment, separate adjustment for forward and reverse • Aggressiveness adjustment for Dynashift (powershift) ratios
7614 Dyna4 Essential
7618 Dyna6 Efficient
Dyna-TM works in conjunction with Dyna-VT. This electronic management system automatically takes control of the engine and transmission when activated. Dyna-TM controls the engine speed according to the load on the tractor. It maintains the required forward speed whilst at the same time minimising the engine revs in order to keep fuel consumption to a minimum. Dyna-VT and Dyna-TM will work consistently at maximum efficiency and economy whilst maintaining a smoother drive quality and a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption. Dyna-TM: As the load (red line) varies according to the conditions, the DynaTM will automatically adjust the engine speed (grey line) to maintain the forward speed whilst minimising fuel consumption and noise levels. DYNA-VT BENEFITS • 0.03 to 40km/h or 50km/h • 40kph super Eco or 50kph Eco • The choice of two speed ranges optimise torque for different applications • Pedal, forager or lever control • SV1/SV2 cruise speeds • ‘Supervisor’ maximises the output under varying loads • Dynamic Tractor Management (DTM) maintains the set travel speed by automatically adjusting the power (engine speed) according to load • Active Stop • Turbo clutch on/off • Shuttle aggressiveness adjustment • Switch between cruise speeds (SV1 and SV2) • Brake pedal neutral feature

RFM SATISFIED CUSTOMERS FROM WARWICKSHIRE TO SOUTH WALES RELIABLE POWER & SERVICE SUPPORT is the reason HJC Warhurst, Walton Hill Farm, choose Agco equipment from RFM Henry Warhurst and his Farm Manager Jack farm cereals, oilseed and pulses in rotation on 566 Ha of heavy clay soils in Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, with only a small satellite block of more gravel based soils providing a little respite. Growing 1st and 2nd wheat, OSR and Spring Beans profitably requires a focus on soil structure and therefore timeliness of cultivations on the heavy soil. The recent wet years have tested the rotation on the heavy clay more than most, Spring Beans frequency normally depends on future prices or the need for a break from OSR, or more recently when the need arises with OSR establishment difficulties. Running a Challenger 765C for the past 3 seasons has ensured maximum output with 20-30% more output than with the previous wheeled tractor, not to mention reduced soil compaction. The very low level of wheel slip and therefore tracking in the crop not only benefit soil structure with minimal compaction, but also supports the single pass shallow establishment of OSR with the cultivator and seeder. The Challenger’s power combined with low ground pressure suits drilling too with the 6m Horsch Sprinter, easily handled on banks and benefiting the wheat with more consistent drilling depths. Henry and Jack prefer Massey Ferguson to support the Challenger, the MF 7626 assists with cultivation pulling the Terrano or a Carrier for stale seedbed preparation. The MF 7618 deals with the lighter jobs, spraying with a trailed sprayer, a Kuhn Axis 40.1W for fertilising, and the 8.3m Cousins rolls (critical for slug reduction on the heavy soils). Henry recognises exceptional fuel efficiency and very reliable power, plus high levels of support and service from the RFM Martley team for choosing Massey Ferguson. Jack agrees, adding the impressive comfort and quiet cab make long days at the crucial time much more enjoyable. The MF’s ‘Exclusive’ specification on both tractors enables the most efficient operation and a consistent work platform for even new drivers to maximise the output each day. The Challenger is fitted with Top Con Autoguide & the obvious benefits from cultivating & drilling have convinced Henry to equip the 7626 & 7618 with Top con RTK which will work from his own fixed station, with a view to using variable rate & mapping. The fleet is completed with a JCB 526-56 Agri, Walton Hill’s go-to vehicle. The JCB’s role is varied assisting with the on farm storage business, grain and fertiliser re-handling, feeding the drill and using the 4 in 1 bucket, perfect for a variety of estate maintenance.
Tom Waters farms at Salisbury Farm Caldicot Gwent, plus land in other parts of the county. Sheep is the main enterprise with 300 ewes. Tom also undertakes some local grassland contracting work as well as agricultural fencing and stone walling. In the summer 3,500 bales will be made, a mixture of round and small square hay and hayage. The farm run an aging MF3060 which has clocked up 8000 hours. “When looking for a new tractor, the new series of 5600 Massey was an automatic choice. We cannot justify changing tractors regularly and wanted to make sure it had a good level of equipment so that it wasn’t out of date quickly during its life with us”. “We wanted 100hp, the 5610 is a little over that and being 3 cylinder provides fantastic manoeuvrability, the new cab is well equipped, quiet and vision is superb especially looking in front over the sloping nose. We specified 100 litre oil flow to ensure the loader reacts quickly and we really like the MF loader joystick, this not only controls loader functions but also the transmission, we use the joystick for forward and reverse during loader work and the left hand control when using rear linkage and backing up to implements, the console T bar is then used for general road and field work. So far we are very pleased with our investment”. www.rossfarm.co.uk | MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014

“A diverse spread of crops & a large acreage demand that the wheels need to keep rolling, we are lifting potatoes, harvesting cereals & soft fruit whilst cultivating & planting next year’s crop. Time definitely equals money & we cannot afford any downtime with our mainline tractors, whatever they’re doing. A 100 hp tractor fitted with creep speed & on Hi Clear is every bit as important to us as the 250hp tractor on the seed drill, we believe we get the right support from RFM time has proven that they know how important service is to us. We operate 11 Massey tractors which are boosted to 14 in the harvest with 3 short term hire tractors. Main jobs are pulling 6m Culti Drills for our two 7624`s, the three 7620`s plough & top dress using our Kuhn Axis 40.1 which are variable rate, pull a 36m trailed sprayer & operate destoners & potato harvesters, all of our 7600 series are specified with CVT transmissions. The main line tractors are helped out by a 7480, 7485 & 6480. On the soft fruit side we run MF 5430, 5455, 5440 & 5612 all of which are fitted with creep speed and spend much of their time inside polly tunnels. Three of our 7600’s, a 936 & a 5455 are equipped with Top Con RTK which is particularly beneficial when forming beds of both strawberries & potatoes but we also see cost savings from eliminating overlaps for all field work. The heaviest work - 3 row Standen bed tiller, 4m SL Simba cultivator & 5 leg Flatliner is carried out with a Fendt 936. JCB has proven to be a reliable workhorse for us & we now have a 541-70 in Hampshire, two 536-70`s in Ross for crop re handling & chicken site work & a 527-58 on our chicken sites in Warwickshire & Worcestershire”.
Customer focus brings Drummond success
Farm Business is a magazine with a very definite focus on the business of farming, says editor Chris Lyddon, and the winner of this year’s Farm Business of the Year Award encapsulates this approach
The winner of the Farm Business of the Year category, sponsored by Firestone, of the Farm Business Food and Farming Industry Awards has to be the epitome of high efficiency, modern commer cial farming, done in a way that makes the most of all inputs and with a focus on satisfying cus tomer needs profitably. E C Drummond (Agriculture) Ltd, Farm Business of the Year for 2013, epitomises what the judges were looking for. Based near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, it’s a business that aims to be the number-one choice supplier for its customers . The farm, which covers a total of 2,800 hectares, produces soft fruit, arable crops and around 10 million broiler chickens a year. Combined turnover has grown from £15 million to £23m over the past five years. The company has invested over £2m in renewable energy in the past 12 months and has just started the £600,000 con struction of reservoirs to secure the farm’s water supply for the future. It continues to invest in production systems for soft fruit to improve productivity and quality. POULTRY Drummond has five poultry sites in the West Midlands. The birds are supplied to two major integra tors, Two Sisters and Faccenda. The sites are very modern and all sheds have been kept up to a very high standard. Over the past 12 months, significant investment has been made into biomass boilers for heating the sheds. The better quality heat and drier atmosphere created by the new system has led to improved performance. By the end of the year, four of the five sites will have had boilers installed with a fifth scheduled for spring 2014. Each poultry site has its own manager who is encouraged to actively take control on a day-to day basis, says farm manager Ben Drummond. “This combined with our fantastic facilities, has led to continued good performance with most sites consistently being near the top of
of what was the in-hand farming operation of the Manydown Estate in Hampshire. This has now risen to 1,416ha. During its time there Drummond has been able to significantly increase the productivity of the business by cutting establishment and machinery costs while still delivering on yield . During 2010 Drummond was successful in getting a further tenancy on the Stratfield Saye estate, also in Hampshire. Day-to-day farming operations are run by farm manager Mike Goodenough with two full-time staff and a placement student, with extra help at busy times. Cropping is all com binable, based around first wheats and oilseed rape.
the production league tables,”he says. In early 2013, four new poultry sheds were built on a site near Per shore in Worcestershire to supply Faccenda. SOFT FRUIT Drummond also produces 1,400 tonnes of soft fruit a year. The company has a fulltime management team of six plus 15 other full-timers. During the peak of the season, 400 seasonal staff are employed to carry out all the manual functions. Since 2009 all of Drummond’s class 1 production has been supplied to Morrison’s and the company is one of only a very small number of growers that supplies the retailer direct. “This has been a fantastic move, allowing direct conversations and a strong relationship to build,” say Mr Drummond. “All production is packed on site and distributed to the various RDCs (retail distribu tion centres). Our season starts in mid-April with glasshouse production and runs
through until early November.” The company has invested in substrate production and in constructing winter storage reservoirs and a rainwater harvesting system to reduce its impact on the River Wye.
“Retaining and recruiting good staff are key in this very labourintensive business”. We’ve invested a lot of time and resources into offering the best experience while the staff are with us on site, with 70% returning from last season to this,” says Mr Drummond. “The management team has also been strengthened to make sure one of the most important resources we have is maintained.” “Retaining and recruiting good staff are key in this very labourintensive business” EC Drummond farms in Here fordshire and Hampshire. In 2009 the company took a contract farming agreement of 1,215ha
ARABLE ROTATION In Herefordshire, Drummond farms just over 1,012ha in an arable rotation based around pro cessing potatoes - it grows 243ha predominantly of Maris Piper and specialises in the early production of these in late July and early August. It aims to be a low-cost producer and first point of call for its customers who are the major oven chip manufacturers. Wheat grown here is fed back into the poultry. Other crops include oilseed rape, barley and 16ha of cider apples. Until early 2013 Drummond also had an amenity turf-growing business, but decided to exit the market because of poor returns and very strong competition. “While most farming businesses have decided to specialise in one particular area of production, we have decided that it is still very important to have a diverse range of crops and enterprises” says Mr Drummond. “We aim to be in the upper quar tile of whatever we do and make sure that each enterprise has the correct level of dedicated management and investment to make it a success. This allows our customers to have the confidence that E C Drummond is 100% committed to them and makes sure that focus in that area is always maintained.”

TEDDERS
When a KUHN engineer came up with this drive coupling we knew that this would change the rotary tedder as it was then known. Indeed, this patented design made it possible to reliably drive a large number of rotors yet fold them with unrivalled compactness, all with virtually no maintenance or repairs. Since Digidrive’s inception nearly 20 years have passed and more than 150,000 tedders are now at work across the land tedding hay with unmatched reliability.
MASTERDRIVE
RAKES
KUHN has the necessary technology to ensure your piece of mind: MASTERDRIVE gearboxes. Rotors that handle stress:The rear rotors of a side delivery rake are inevitably required to move twice as much crop. If the rake is also used to combine windrows of heavy, dense fodder, the stress on the rotors is significant. MASTERDRIVE, a simple priciple: instead of driving the rotor with a single level gear, a double reduction is used utilising a bevel gear and a bullgear drive. Result: force and loads are better distributed and stresses are reduced, for near faultless reliability under all conditions.

There is a multitude of options including tyres, pump, axle, doors and self filling specifications. The full price list is too comprehensive to list however here are two examples. A further reason for choosing Joskin is their understanding and product offering for slurry application systems. Joskin has been involved in this equipment ever since the need was established in Europe where the systems have been in use for many years; compulsory in Holland for 20 years. We needed a supplier with experience and Joskin certainly have that. The use of precise slurry application will dramatically reduce ammonia and gaseous nitrogen losses. FASTRAC
If you want to get the job done fast
What’s stopping you? Your safety is paramount, and so is that of other road users. That’s why all JCB Fastracs come with EU truck standard disc brakes and ABS on all four wheels, as well as an ABS power supply and twin-line air brakes for your trailer. So you can stop quickly from speeds of up to 65kph in complete safety and comfort, giving you peace of mind in case of emergencies. And because the brakes are conveniently mounted outboard - instead of tucked away in the axles - they don’t overheat, don’t fade and don’t contaminate your hydraulic oil or transmission. It also means the pads are simple and inexpensive to replace.
The new 4000 Series Fastrac stole the show at Agritechnica. Models within the 160-220hp category will be available during the autumn. Book your demo now. This exciting 160-220hp design stays true to the Fastrac concept, working and travelling at faster speeds on all-round suspension and braking, with the versatility to carry a heavy payload on the rear, front and behind the cab. With the advantages of CVT, more sophisticated suspension, tighter four-wheel steering and a cab with unrivalled visibility, the Fastrac 4000 comes alive with attributes that will drive productivity and efficiency on any farm.
4160 - 160hp, 4190 - 190hp & 4220 - 220hp This exciting new range will be launched to customers in May at JCB world headquarters in Uttoxeter. RFM would very much like to take any potential customer to this event - Please call to register your interest.
FASTRAC the only AG Tractor that can legally travel at speeds above 33kph to a max of 64kph Innovation In action The ultimate smooth ride Full suspension The only draft tractor with front and rear suspension: • Provides ultimate operator comfort, reducing fatigue and improving concentration for greater output • Irons out bumps and jolts in the field to keep implements working effectively, and again for improved operator productivity • Enhances control and comfort, ensuring that your operators and the public are safe both in field and on the road
How it works ... Maintaining constant ride height with self-levelling rear suspension As weight is applied to the rear: • the chassis is lowered in relation to the rear axle (fig 2) • the ride height corrector valves allow oil to flow in • this pressurises the hydraulic cylinders which: a) steadily restores original ride height (fig 3) b) increases suspension stiffness to accommodate the extra weight As weight is removed: • sensors detect the change in height (fig 4) • ride height corrector valves are displaced in the opposite direction • this restores ride height to the pre-set level (fig I)

LOADING SHOVELS THE NEW WHEELED LOADING SHOVEL The JCB 434S is widely regarded as setting the standard for wheeled loaders, designed specifically for heavy-duty agricultural applications… Until now! The new 435S may not look very different at first glance, but it has rewritten the rule book once again, eclipsing even the 434S. More productive - Up to 34% faster in silage clamp operations thanks to a new 6-speed transmission, lock-up torque converter in all gears and new axle options. More efficient - Up to 28% lower fuel usage, with variable geometry turbo producing the power at lower engine speeds, an ECO mode which limits engine revs to 1800, and auto-idle reducing revs to 700 after 30 seconds of inactivity. Highest power-to-weight ratio in its class - Stage lllB I Tier 4i compliant 6 cylinder engine with 230hp maximum power and 945Nm maximum torque gives the Faster top speed - 48kph top speed allows it to keep up with the rest of the contractor fleet, reducing waiting time at the next site. More comfort - Lower noise levels of just 70dBA, new cab with improved instrument display, new climate control option and the choice of an optional Actimo XXL luxury air suspension seat. Plus programable SRS that engages at any pre-set speed. TELESCOPIC LOADING SHOVEL TM320/320S Its no surprise that other manufacturers have tried and failed to compete with JCB in this market. It is probably because JCB take many of their features and components from the wheeled loading shovel which is tried and tested in agriculture and arduous construction applications all over the world. With the JCB TM320, TM320S and TM320WM, you won’t have to compromise. Class-leading engine power and torque, lift capacity, load-sensing hydraulics and super-fast cycle times redefine performance in a telescopic wheeled loader. The JCB EcoMAX T4i engine needs no additional aftertreatment like a DPF or SCR ensuring optimum visibility and manouvrability. While the luxurious cab, SRS, TorqueLock and joystick gear changes give unrivalled comfort and efficiency.
THE POWER TO PERFORM THE CLASS LEADER WHEN IT COMES TO LIFT CAPACITY AND TEAROUT FORCE, COMBINED WITH 5.2M LIFT HEIGHT, 2.9M FORWARD REACH AND THE SUPERB JCB ECOMAX ENGINE. THERE’S NOTHING THE TM320 CAN’T HANDLE.
JCB’s Smooth Ride System (SRS) allows the boom and load to move independently of the chassis for better load retention, increased operator comfort and reduced stress on structures. When roading, the TM320 also reduces fuel consumption thanks to automatic TorqueLock in fourth, fifth and sixth gears.
VISION & MANOUVERABILITY The hallmark of the TM320. Both models have 6 speed powershift, 40KPH and the same dimensions. The S model has a larger flow pump & 145HP engine, 20HP more than the standard model resulting in quicker cycle times. Expect to pay £2,750 premium for the S model. www.rossfarm.co.uk | MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014

The world’s most modern tractor factory network A vision and clear principles went into planning the world’s most modern factory network for tractors. Fendt oriented itself to the automobile and commercial vehicle industries and developed groundbreaking proprietary developments for production, which take the special requirements of the agricultural industry into account. Today Fendt stands for innovative production processes and technologies in agricultural engineering.
The 3D virtual reality centre is unique in the industry; Fendt uses it to examine the accuracy of fit and any possible assembly procedures in a very early stage of the design. Shifting the development into the virtual world enables fast and better quality in the course of the development of new products and technologies.
It was certainly wet underfoot in November when the farm machinery of Shakenhurst Estates nr Worcester was auctioned by Brown & Co. The 1000hour Fendt 724 and 828 sporting 12 plates sold for £90,000 and £99,750 respectively, perhaps a little shy of what we had hoped for but not bad approaching a long winter. Compare that with dealer advertised prices for same year New Holland T7-260 with similar hours at £61,000 (there’s probably room for manoeuvre in that!) More recently (Feb 14) Sunderlands & Thompsons auctioned older Fendt’s for Powell & Son the 2009 820 with 6000hrs made £46,000 and a 716 from 2006 with 7600hrs made £32,000.

VARIO
Fendt was the first production tractor to incorporate CVT in 1995, then as now the transmission is built in house by Fendt. Other brands have followed most using outside supplier ZF, CNH have recently switched to using a Fiat industries transmission. Vario remains the only totally clutchless transmission, constantly variable from 0.02 to 50/60kph without any interruption of drive to the wheels. No power shift, no power shuttle, no clutches, no gear changing - Vario is mechanically very simple compared to competition. Benefits are economy, ease of service, longevity, no special oils required. Changing direction is as simple as swinging the displacement pump in the opposite direction - without any wear on the transmission. No crawler gears required for low speed applications, 0.02kmh comes as standard. Two programmable and easily recalled cruise control speeds for effortless field operations. The transmission allows for reduced engine speeds at high road speed further reducing fuel consumption. Separate oil reservoirs for transmission and hydraulic circuit. Benefits - no contamination risk to transmission oil (foreign bodies or the wrong type of oil), transmission protected from excess heat developed by high oil demand from implement (potato harvester for example), oil level in transmission unaffected by tipping large trailers. A 2000 hour life for the transmission oil gives a cost of ownership benefit.
TMS! Clever mechanical principles can only be exploited by the best
transmission management system there is - TMS. Assuring the correct engine speed for a given load in order to deliver optimum fuel savings. Automatic Max Output Control - Auto adjustment of transmission ratio dependent on engine speed drop. This gives: • Quick achievement of desired speed • Better acceleration and maintaining speeds up hills • More lively performance under load • Higher average speed with low fuel consumption
Size and weight matters, Fendts philosophy is to keep
dimensions and weight to an optimum. Not only does this reduce compaction and fuel usage but increases power to weight ratio for a lively performance. Measured against its main rival a Fendt 724 is 11% lighter and has 12% less turning circle yet it has a 24% higher payload and an 8% higher lift capacity and returns a 15% saving in fuel.
Fendt takes driver comfort very seriously. Superb vision, the best laid out controls on the market, the ease of driving vario, ultra quiet cab mounted on air cab suspension with deluxe seating and an absence of rattles ensure driver fatigue is contained to the minimum.
Fuel
is the single largest cost factor in the life cycle of a tractor. Fendt “Tractor Management System” (TMS) linked to the efficient vario transmission and minimum weight and bulk all contribute to Fendts No1 ranking for fuel economy and efficiency. Convert gallons per kilowatt hour into £ and save £000’s on input costs.
saving you up to £24,000
Do not be surprised if your Fendt is in diesel over a 7 year period (1200 hours per year) compared with a competitor.
profi TRACTOR TEST Jan’13
“It’s pretty much top marks all the way. For quick proof, just look at the power mix results to see how efficiently the tractor converts fuel into useable power”.

A WIDER CHOICE
COMPLETE CULTIVATION SOLUTIONS
The DUOFLEX-System ensures that each roller section works independently, by means of slots in the piston rods. This means that an optimal contact with the soil is achieved along the whole working width even in difficult conditions. Two heavy springs ensure an even weight distribution to the side sections.
The DUOFLEX-System with accumulators enables each roller section to independently follow groundcontours.
SIMPLE YET BRILLIANT FOLDING/UNFOLDING SYSTEM FROM A STATIONERY POSITION Hydraulic folding rollers with horizontal roller sections and very low centre of gravity. Folding and unfolding is carried out hydraulically from the tractor, which is in a stationery position. By virtue of the big overlap between each section an optimal rolling is achieved along the whole working width even by turns and in uneven ground. The hydraulic weight transfer allows to transfer weight from the middle section to the side sections achieving an even soil pressure over the entire working width. The DUOFLEX-System ensures that each roller section works independently. There are different weights of roller, depending on model and ring choice (50cm/55cm/60cm). WIDTHS AVAILABLE: 4.5 6.3 8.3 9.3 9.5 10.3 12.3 16.3 Examples (priced with 50cm): 6.3m £6,600 6.3m with levelling £8,950 8.3m £10,750 All sizes are available with hydraulic leveling board which will differ in design depending on the model.

HIGH CAPACITY 2-ROW TRAILED POTATO HARVESTER
OMEGA ADVANCED SEPARATION
OMEGA; gentle, effective, high capacity clod, stone, haulm and weed separation is at the heart of T2, providing efficient crop cleaning and removal of unwanted material. T2 features two OMEGA separating units, one behind the other. Each OMEGA unit comprises 3 x soft fluted rollers (plastic covered, foam filled), and 3 x clod rollers; Ebonite or steel. Both OMEGA units are angle adjustable from the cab’ to provide varying degrees of separation. Fluted roller speed is adjusted from the driver’s cab. Clod roller speeds are also adjusted from the cab, along with clod roller height. Clod rollers can easily be reversed. Importantly, during its adjustment, each clod roller rotates around the circumference of their adjacent fluted roller. This unique ‘constant geometry‘ design ensures the gap doesn’t change with up/down adjustment. The driver’s Control Console has clear indicators showing clod roller heights. OMEGA’s wide range of adjustment enables it to be used effectively in many different soil types and conditions. Also on salad and main crop potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, turnips, celeriac, etc.
VARISEP ADJUSTABLE STEP BETWEEN DIGGING & SIEVING WEBS
Turn your 2 row into a 4 row harvester - lift rows 1 & 4 and wind row into 2 & 3 with Tolmac then lift 2 & 3 with trailed harvester.
VariSep enables the operator to easily raise or lower the sieving web (20cm) so adjusting the degree of separation at this point. Separation can be set for maximum separation (high step), or minimum separation, level webs (no step). This helps the operator minimise potential crop damage, or maximize separation when required. Clever geometry in the VariSep linkage maintains a constant gap between the webs; the sieving web rotates around the circumference of the rear of the digging web as it raised/lowered. The gap is adjustable to suit conditions. Separation is enhanced by 3 x high frequency low amplitude rotary agitators under the sieving web. The agitators are adjustable from the cab‘ controls. An 82mm diameter rubber covered haulm roller provides effective haulm removal. This full—width roller is easily adjusted and can be reversed from the in— cab controls, spring loading is provided for stone protection.

Combined front furrow width/ angling According to the tractor linkages and/ or the ground conditions the front furrow width is adjusted to its optimum setting. The parallelogram obtained by the layout of the two linkages means that any adjustments in front furrow width automatically adjusts the angling of the plough so that the tractor always pulls in perfect line. Adjustments are quickly carried out by simply turning the turnbuckle adjuster or by activating the hydraulic ram (optional). One adjustment is sufficient unlike conventional systems where the front furrow width and the plough alignment are separated. With the conventional system as one adjustments interacts with the other, several successive adjustments are necessary.
Exclusive to KUHN
Exclusive to KUHN • The whole variable width linkage system is enclosed in the plough structure giving maximum protection from water, dust and possible shocks. • All moving pivot points are chromed, prevented from rotating, and assembled with wearing bushes: no risk of jamming and very low maintenance.
• KUHN mouldboards are made of unequal layer Triplex steel. • The thickness of the wearing surface is increased to 3.3mm - an exclusive feature.
Exclusive to KUHN Main beam The main beam (either 120mm or 150mm section) is supported by a side mounted triangular reinforcement welded along the length of the front section. This increases the strength of the beam in the zone of most stress and gives substantial advantages when compared to a conventional plough design. Auto reset plough leg protection (non-stop hydraulic) A unique concept The basic concept of the hydraulic non-stop plough leg safety system gives a rapid break-away when a obstacle is met, and yet an increase in pressure thereafter bringing the body quickly and firmly back into work.
Traction bolt leg protection Abrupt breakage of the 16mm traction bolt following a force at the plough point in excess of 3000kg avoids risk of too frequent a breakage. • The bolt runs in the direction of the line of force contrary to the conventional scissor bolt method where the bolt runs across the line of force. • Due to these “in-line” forces the bolt support never deforms and never becomes rounded with use. • It is impossible for the bolt to become trapped inside following a breakage. Once a force in excess of 3000kg is met at the furrow point the bolt breaks along its length and simply falls away for quick and easy replacement.

POWER HARROWS & PNEUMATIC DRILLS Pricing Examples: Including maxi packer - leveling bar & duplex gearbox.
KUHN Ventra Drills are built to the same exacting standards as the power harrow that they are mounted to:
3m - HRB302 - standard bolt on tines £8,250 3m - HR304D - heavy duty fast fit tines £9,495 3m - HR3004D - contractor fast fit tines £10,450 4m - HR4004D fast fit tines £13,200 4m folding - HR4004DR fast fit tines £19,850 6m folding - HR6004DR fast fit tines £24,750
The build quality means that the weight of the machine is higher than most if not all other brands but KUHN specifically designed the drill for power harrow mounting and therefore is closer coupled keeping leverages down to a minimum. Full access to hopper The cover of the hopper opens fully by tipping towards the front. Neither the distribution head nor the hoses get in the way of filling.
THE KEY TO LONGEVITY & RESALE VALUE Sometimes copied but never equalled
The rigid cover fitted with a seal is an asset: • No dust, no water in the hopper • High robustness compared with the tarpaulin cover • Easy to load and clean • 1200 litre capacity No clogging An anti blockage flap closes the coulter automatically in the event of an inopportune backward movement. Should the outlet nevertheless become blocked, sowing will continue by scattering the seed from the seed aperture.
Maintenance free highly rigid trough: 8mm thick trough made from fine grain high tensile steel. It contains semiliquid grease, which ensures lubrication of pinions and gearwheels through their service life. O-rings and lip joints ensure sealing for a longer service life. No gearwheel overhang: Convex treated and forged steel gearwheels so that the drive forces (a) are transmitted at the centre of the upper roller bearing (over-dimensioned) without creating an overhang. High capacity shaft guidance and torque transmission capability thanks to the important spline length in contact with the shaft (b). No maintenance on bearings: Large dimension conical roller bearings are always perfectly aligned in a one piece cast housing not subject to distortion. Factory preloaded with a calibrated spacer (c), no further adjustments are required. Perfect bearing hold, gear case protection: the thick cast iron housings (35mm / 1.38” on HR1004, 25mm on HR104) ensure perfect bearing hold and trough protection against wear and distortion. Reinforced sealing: cassette seal providing very efficient protection against bearing pollution.
1. A central metering unit calibrates the seed quantity. 2. This quantity is poured into an injector, where it is mixed with air delivered by the blower. 3. The air-seed mixture rises up the ringed column. 4. The mixture is distributed evenly in the VENTA distribution head: impeccable sowing
For conventional tillage most farmers will be happy to stay with suffolk coulters and continue to benefit from lower running costs. However disc coulters will certainly cope better in trashy conditions, discs in lieu of coulters on a 3m machine adds £3,000 Pricing example Drill only: 3m £13,995 Drill and P/harrow c/w maxipacker and leveling (302): £22,245 Kuhn also offer front tank and rear toolbar drills to fit power harrows for wider working widths.
No play on the spline level: rotor shafts with rolled splines obtained by metal compression (no milling). Perfect connection with the shaft thanks to the conical centring of the blade holders (KUHN patent), preventing play on the spline level. Oval shaped blade holder: to prevent stones from getting jammed and to facilitate their evacuation as well as the evacuation of plant residues. Blades highly resistant to shocks and wear thanks to their thick section: Heat treated 16mm thick and 310mm long FAST-FIT blades. Also available in DURAKUHN coated version or “forward action” version OPTIMIX or 360mm long blades.
Example: 1500Ltr front tank and 4m tool-bar drill - £28,400 (discs) plus additional fitting / set-up costs + 4m folding power harrow www.rossfarm.co.uk | MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014

THE TRANSISSION FROM
The machines are now marketed in the corporate colours of Great Plains, however the products remain UK built and bred. The company produce a wide range of tillage and seeding equipment, here are the most popular machines sold in our region.
FLATLINER HYD RESET
3.0*, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 The benefits of selective soil loosening should never be underestimated, particularly following a wet autumn. Healthy root growth is essential if crop yeilds are to remain high. Any subsurface pans must be identified and then removed. Incorporating the latest technology from Simba, the Flatliner offers the perfect solution. A choice of two ranges provide maximum shatter of deeply embedded campaction layers with minimum surface disturbance across the working width. Flatliner Hydraulic Reset models are ideal for use in stoney conditions. The Flatliner 500 series, with standard shear bolt protection on the tines, includes a folding model capable of working down to 500mm. Flatliners feature low draft and a consolidating rear roller.
*Available with 3 or 5 tines
FLATLINER 500 3.0, 3.5, 3.8, 4.2, 4.5HD, 4.5
(working widths 3.0m-4.5m)
HYDRAULIC RESET SYSTEM - Flatliner Hydraulic Reset The tines can cope with high stone content soils and varying field conditions. Each tine is hydraulic, offering a fast responsive trip and reseting action on the move. The hydraulic system is fully pressurised for minimal maintenace and wear.
This compact disc harrow with integrated press roll can be used without tines for a high-speed primary shallow pass to depths of between 5 and 15cms, and for incorporation of stubble. The X-Press produces consistenly excellent results, even in the hardest soils, using a tractor from as little as 70hp. Add an ST Bar (mounted only) ahead of the X-Press and the machine is transformed into a one-pass cultivator which can restructure the soil, taking out compaction caused by harvest traffic, down to a depth of 250mms. Use the machines seperately or combined on a reduced tillage or plough-based system - that’s real versatility.

The Pro-Lift loosening Tine lifts and loosens the soil above it, reducing bulk density and compaction, whilst minimising disturbance at the surface. Overall soil flow should be UPWARDS rather than outwards or smearing downwards. Tines that move the soil SIDEWAYS will not remove compacted layers and may even make them worse.
POSITIVE DEPTH CONTROL Positive control of working depth is provided via the rear DD ring roller. 42
V PROFILE TOOLBAR Flatliner 500 and Hydraulic Reset Models The V form toolbar is designed to ensure low draft, ease of trash passage through the machine and optimum shatter.
ADJUSTABLE TINE CLAMPS Flatliner 500 Adjustable tine clamps offer increased flexibility.
MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014 | www.rossfarm.co.uk
Trailed X-Press can be used in reduced cultivation systems, to incorporate stubble or to work down ploughing in more conventioanl regimes. The versatility of the reliable, well proven X-Press is further enhanced by the ability to vary the angle of the discs ensuring penetration in hard conditions and eliminating the need to carry large amounts of ballast weight.
WHY CHOOSE A GREAT PLAINS CULTIVATOR? DISCS - The cultivation discs are spaced at 250mm, there rotational speed is far greater than most conventional discs. The Pro Active units enhance chopping and mixing, provide effective stone protection, greater penetration and achieve a finer seed bed. With adjustable angle of 0 to 25 degrees, the discs give you more flexibility. Higher angles cut and mix as a primary operation, whilst lower angles chop and consolidate as a secondary operation. The design of the discs results in a massive amount of clearance between both gangs of discs and the rear roller to ensure the machine can deal with high volumes of trash in both wet and dry conditions.

IS NOW COMPLETE
The benefit for all is obvious to see, since Great Plains purchased Simba. The parent company have invested heavily in manufacturing resulting in many aspects of the manufacturing process being brought in house to ensure quality & price competetiveness. Being part of a global player provides more investment for product development & greater access to overseas markets & secures the future for the Sleaford based UK division.
Kansas & Sleaford
FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Founded in 1976 by President and owner Roy Applequist, Great Plains Manufacturing employs more than 1,400 people in Central Kansas and Sleaford. In addition to its domestic ag equipment division, which manufactures seedbed preparation, nutrient placement, and seeding equipment. Great Plains Manufacturing also includes Great Plains International, Great Plains Trucking, Great Plains Acceptance Corporation, and its Land Pride Division that manufactures grounds maintenance tools such as mowers, tillers, rotary cutters, and snow removal equipment. The company is one of the largest and fastest growing family-owned ‘short-line’ implement companies in the United States and across the world.
DTX 300, 300AR,
350, 350AR
(working widths 3.0m-3.5m)
Ideal for light to medium soil types and conditions, the Simba SL creates a seedbed of the highest quality. A single row of Pro-Active disc units, followed by two rows of ST tines, another set of discs and a DD600 rear roller (DD700 and SL700) really gets the job done. The SL is able to work at shallow depths with the discs and deeper with loosening tines as two distinct operations within the machine. (working widths 4.0m-6.7m) Field settings are quick and easy to adjust allowing the SL to cope with various soil types, conditions and residue levels. The design of the tine ensures a complete shatter of the soil profile at depth, without bringing clods and subsoil to the surface. The end result is a fine, level, weatherproof seedbed.
SL 400, 500, 600,
Designed as a mounted one-pass stubble incorporator/soil loosener for tractors in the 200-360hp range, the DTX is extremely versatile. It can be used in a number of different ways, for example, as a first entry machine into non-inversion tillage or to knock down ploughing, whilst loosening down to 400mm (16”). It is also ideally suited to establishing oilseed rape straight into stubble, as it leaves a very level, fine and consolidated seedbed. This mounted machine also offers very good trash clearance. The front tines are staggered and the fully adjustable discs can have greater or lesser angle applied to improve cultivation effect.
HYDRAULIC AUTO-RESET OPTION - An optional autoreset tine system can be specified for stoney conditions reducing downtime and increasing productivity.
700
SLD 300, 350,
The SLD is a deeper working version of the SL cultivator. It incorporates some of the principles of the wellproven Solo, and bridges the gap between the SL and Solo. (working widths 2.8m-6.0m) Equipped with Pro-Lift hydraulic reset tines and a DD rear roller, the SLD leaves an excellent level finish, while also performing an effective loosening operation down to 300mm. Designed using the latest computer-aided techniques, the SLD chassis is built to take the stresses and punishment of use with tractors up to 650hp in its stride - season after season, after season.
420, 460, 540, 600
3M DTX £16,000
TINES - Pro Lift tines are fitted as standard, these tines offer three different wing options as well as having 4 wearing parts to them (point, shin, wing and heel) each of which can be changed individually. The three different wings, each imparting a different degree of lift, enabling the amount of work completed to be matched to the prevailing soil conditions and moisture levels. When fitted to either the DTX or SLD machines they have the capabilities to work down to 400mm with minimal draught and 500mm if fitted to the Flatliner range. These tines excel in heavier soils and in conditions requiring deeper loosening. The Low Disturbance tine is designed to greatly reduce surface heave, whilst loosening at depth without smearing and also allow the soil to close behind the tine. This tine has become ideal for helping to establish OSR as it loosens and repairs the soil at depth whilst leaving the finer aggregates on the surface providing good seed to soil contact. It is used on all Agrovista and Agrii OSR Trial sites where Great Plains has established OSR crops using the one pass DTX system. These Low Disturbance tines fit all existing ST or Pro Lift tine machines with little effort required to change them.
CONSOLIDATION DD ROLLER - Effective consolidation plays a crucial but often under appreciated part in modern arable farming. As part of a reduced tillage regime, it can save valuable time, reduce costs, and increase yields. The design of the roller is such that there is no welding involved at all with the rings held together under force which is a patent of Great Plains. This means that should a ring become damaged or in time the roller wears out it can be replaced easily and cost effectively. Manufactured from the highest quality Boron steel, the rings have a self sharpening cutting edge mounted on a carefully angled shoulder. This enables them to cut clods effectively, crushing the parted halves so they disintegrate, while also contacting over 80% of the soil surface so they consoidate and level the seed bed leaving a ridged, weatherproof surface. The finish of the DD roller means that any clods left behind will break down further naturally meaning that the drill will not have to work as hard to produce as finer seed bed as normal making the drilling a more cost effective process. www.rossfarm.co.uk | MACHINERY MATTERS Spring 2014

CULTIVATOR DRILL
2010 was the year that change occurred in the UK for Simba, for many years Simba had a marketing agreement to sell the Horsch drill, but in 2010 Horsch withdrew from the arrangement and decided to deal direct in the UK. 2010 also saw the acquisition of Simba by Great Plains based in Kansas. This provided Great Plains with access to the European market and gave the Simba product a boost of capital to increase manufacturing in the UK and guarantee future R&D. Great Plains already manufactured a range of drills and therefore it was only matter of time before the void left by the Horsch withdrawl was filled by a drill suitable for UK conditions made in Sleaford.
A new standard in
productivity and accuracy
Designed to set new standards in productivity, efficiency and operating economy, the Centurion incorporates a host of innovative features alongside proven technologies. The result is a disc based cultivator drill, ideally suited to reduced tillage and plough-based establishment systems, that delivers superb drilling accuracy, consistent seed placement and reliable depth control across a wide range of soil types and conditions.

Tony Farr RFM Parts Manager
“it’s the parts you can’t see that count”
“The primary objective of RFM’s parts department, is to ensure that the critical spare parts, wearing parts, oils and filters for the equipment that our sales people sell are available in our stock to keep downtime to a minimum. That is why the stock we keep, that you don’t see, at the back of the counter totals in excess of £1million is critical to providing a good service. Of course it is not always possible to have the part in stock however it is reassuring that our main suppliers JCB/MF/Fendt/Kuhn have their UK parts stock only an hour or so away from our depots (some manufacturers have no UK warehousing!). Our front of counter stock is made up largely of consumables, hardware and tools, on this page you can see some of our current offers, please contact your local RFM depot for further details.

INVESTMENT IN TRAINING PAYS OFF AS RFM BECOME REGIONS HIGHEST RANKING AGCO DEALER
RFM service manager Francis Evans “Sophisticated farm equipment is no longer confined to large arable farms as the more technically advanced features have found there way down to small and medium sized machinery. Almost every machine now has some level of complex electronics and hydraulics and most engines are common rail and many are AdBlue. Modern transmissions are fine tuned and electronically controlled and canbus/ Isobus technology is now common place. Todays agricultural machinery although highly productive is expensive and deserves to be serviced on time properly. All RFM engineers are trained by manufacturers at least two weeks every year to keep abreast of latest techniques, upgrades and technology. RFM have invested heavily in special tools, in excess of £100,000 to enable quick and accurate diagnosis and repair.

Constant training and investment is certainly one of the main reasons RFM received AGCO’s ‘Dealer Standards Award’ in December 2013.
