We’re looking for New Recruits! This Spring, Severnside are looking to recruit new Grounds Maintenance Inspectors and Grounds Maintenance Champions to help monitor and track the grounds maintenance work carried out by our contractors, Ground Control. Grounds Maintenance Champions are residents based from home, who can carry out inspections and complete reports from the comfort of their armchair, or from their garden. Many of these Champions are based at our Sheltered Housing Schemes. Grounds Maintenance Inspectors undertake similar inspections but often carry these out in areas away from their home. Inspections are carried out alongside the Estate Walkabouts and other activities, such as Community Action Days. Grounds
Maintenance Inspectors are equipped with a map identifying areas and Ground Control’s main jobs in these areas, a phone, a digital camera, clipboard and bag. All Inspectors and Champions are issued with a folder, following their training, with information to support them. In preparation for the new cutting season and the Summer months ahead, we are recruiting to the team and training events are already booked in for March for both current and new recruits, so why not join us? For further details, or to sign up, call the Community Development Team on 0300 300 0059 or email community@severnsidehousing.co.uk
DAWN’S SENATE BLOG Since the last blog a few things have happened – we have said farewell to one of our members, Steve Townsend. Steve stepped down in December 2014 and we wish to say many thanks for all the hard work he put in over the last three years. By way of showing our recognition for his contribution, at the last meeting Steve attended, he was presented with a certificate of appreciation. Now the Christmas festivities have come and gone and we are into a new year, it looks as if it is going to be a busy one – with training courses for those who wish to do them at Trafford Hall, looking at and planning what our next project is going to be and events to help people come together and work as one – it’s very exciting! There has been a slight delay in finishing off the survey on the recruitment of tenants to become more involved in the shaping of the services that Severnside provide for us, as a few of our Resident Inspectors have been poorly – I hope you are all feeling better.

Pillar Spring 2015
We have also been keeping an eye on Value for Money for several months now and we have been pleasantly surprised how much has been done to make sure Severnside spends tenants’ rent wisely. In addition to a company-wide Value for Money Strategy, which the Senate helped to develop, we have been consulted on the past two Value for Money Self Assessments carried out by staff, including the detailed assessments by individual departments. You can look at these by visiting the Severnside website and searching for ‘Value for Money’. Severnside’s Procurement Manager has also been busy keeping the Efficiency Register updated. This has details of all savings and extras that Severnside has been able to achieve when buying things. Three areas where savings were made in 2014/15 include electrical components (extractor fans, sockets and fuse boxes/consumer units) and on the costs of the STAR survey which was carried out jointly with Shropshire Council and Shropshire Housing Group. Severnside also reviewed the size of central heating boilers used when renewing or installing gas central heating and have now selected a different model for one and two bedroomed properties, reducing the costs of each installation.
In 2015, the Senate will be introducing a Value for Money Suggestion Scheme for Tenants. The scheme will be based on a simple postcard which can be used to send suggestions to the Senate. All suggestions will be assessed by Senate members and saving proposals will be discussed with Severnside staff. Where identified savings are achievable, a small prize will be awarded, the cost of which will be met from the savings. Savings could be used to carry out works on the estate where the resident lives or on other initiatives which benefit local communities. Of course, I will keep you updated on how this suggestion scheme develops. If you would like to know more about the work we do at Senate or how to get involved, please get in touch with us, we will be more than happy to have a chat with you. You can contact us at senate@severnsidehousing.co.uk or telephone 01743 285035.
Spring 2015
We are extremely proud to be launching Severnside’s fifth Learning Programme which is packed full of FREE short courses and training sessions to help you develop new skills or build on existing ones. Our official launch event is taking place on Friday 20th March 2015 at Central, Shrewsbury Baptist Church, Claremont Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1QG – you can drop in any time between 11am and 3pm. We would love you to come along to find out what’s on offer in this year’s programme and sign up for a course or two! As well as all the old favourites we have introduced a number of great new courses including responsible dog ownership, writing a will and a guide to self-employment. We also offer a large selection of accredited courses like food hygiene and health & safety in the work place, which is fantastic news for anyone seeking employment.
Courses are free to Severnside residents, or at a reduced cost, and we can also help with transport and childcare costs if necessary. We are delighted to report that last year’s Learning Programme was a great success; over 435 people attended training sessions and from those surveyed 85% were highly satisfied with their course! Why not sign up to take part – there really is something for everyone, no matter what your age or ability and everyone is made to feel really welcome. If you’re interested in knowing more about our Learning Programme please call us on 0300 300 0059 or email community@ severningsidehousing.co.uk. The danger of Electronic Cigarettes Lots of people use electronic cigarettes, designed to provide inhaled doses of vaporized nicotine, as an aid to quitting or cutting down their smoking. How effectively they deliver nicotine however, is not fully determined and whilst electronic cigarettes are likely to be less hazardous than smoking, their safety has not been demonstrated and the potential risks they pose for the health of users remain undetermined.
Health professionals therefore continue to recommend the use of licensed nicotine replacement therapies, which are known to be safe, to support smokers to quit or cut down. Electronic cigarettes can also pose a risk of nicotine poisoning, a risk that is increased by the way that many are packaged and flavoured making them attractive to children. A nicotine cartridge of 24mg could cause acute nicotine poisoning with potentially fatal consequences.
If you want to stop smoking and reduce health risks you can attend one of over 70 venues across Shropshire offering Help2Quit – the local stop smoking service. A combination of licensed medication, such as nicotine patches, and professional support from Help2Quit increases the chance of successfully quitting by up to four times. Visit www.healthyshropshire.co.uk or call 01743 453537 to find out details of a Help2Quit venue near you.

In response to the growing number of fires and incidents caused by faulty electronic cigarette chargers, the Government has also issued a number of tips to help people stay safe: • follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer carefully and take notice of any warnings supplied with the product; • ensure that e-cigarettes are not left charging for long periods of time; • switch off appliances at the socket when not in use and do not leave e-cigarettes plugged in overnight or when you are out of the house; • look for the CE mark that indicates chargers comply with European Safety standards; • do not overload plug sockets; • check that your electrical products have not been recalled; and • avoid buying counterfeit or substandard goods.
GAS SAFETY CHECKS
Severnside has a legal responsibility to carry out an annual gas inspection at every one of our homes with a gas supply. It’s really important that you let our contractor PH Jones in to do the gas service so, if we call you to arrange a gas safety check, please make sure you are in for the appointment, and remember, everyone who lets our gas contractors have first time access to their home will be entered into a monthly prize draw to win £50.
Unfortunately, if we cannot get access to your property to carry out these important gas safety checks, we will take legal action to gain entry. So please contact PH Jones on Freephone 0800 316 2104 or from a mobile 01743 719051 if you think you need a gas safety check. Please let us carry out a gas safety check in your home – it could save your life!
Universal Credit is coming to Shropshire... You may already be aware that Universal Credit has been piloted in a number of places in the UK and will be coming to Shropshire in April 2015. Initially only single newly unemployed people making a new claim will need to claim Universal Credit. If you are already claiming one of the benefits being phased out you should just carry on claiming as normal – you will be told when you need to do anything differently. However, over time, it is expected that everyone claiming the benefits listed in the section below will need to move to claiming Universal Credit. Below is information to help you understand what Universal Credit is all about and what it may mean for you.
What is Universal Credit?
Universal Credit will replace a number of existing benefits, which are listed below, and will be paid in a different way to current benefits: • Job Seeker’s Allowance • Housing Benefit • Working Tax Credit • Child Tax Credit • Employment and Support Allowance • Income Support
Universal Credit will only be managed online – you make your claim online and then check your payments and updates through your online account.
How you will be paid
If you are successful you will usually receive your first payment 1 month and 7 days after you make your claim. Universal Credit is a single, monthly payment which will be paid into an account of your choice. If you live with your partner and you both claim Universal Credit you’ll receive a single payment that covers both of you. Any help you get with your rent will be included with your Universal Credit payment and you will then have to pay your rent direct to us, as your landlord. It is really important to remember that you could lose your home if you don’t keep up with your rent payments. If you have any concerns please talk to us.
Claiming Online
As previously mentioned, all claims for Universal Credit will need to be made online, so we have listed the things you need to have available with you to complete your application:

• Your postcode • Your National Insurance number • Details of the bank, building society or Post Office account that you want Universal Credit to be paid into • Your rent agreement (if you have one) • Details of any savings or other capital • Details of any income that’s not from work (e.g. from an insurance plan) • Details of any other benefits you’re getting • You may also need the above details for people who live in your home, e.g. your partner The gov.uk website currently states that it takes approximately 20 – 40 minutes to complete a Universal Credit application. However, you need to bear in mind that in the piloted areas people have reported that it has taken them a lot longer. You also need to be careful if you are inactive on your application for more than 20 minutes (i.e. you do not key in any information) as your session will be timed out and you will need to start all over again. We have a number of courses available in our 2015 Learning Programme that can help you prepare for Universal Credit, for example, Managing your Money and Universal Credit & You. Why not attend the launch of our Learning Programme – you can find out all about it on page 3. Alternatively, you can call 0300 300 0059 or email community@ severnsidehousing.co.uk to request a copy of the Learning Programme brochure. Don’t forget if you are out of work we can offer help and advice to access Universal Jobmatch, complete job searches, write CVs and complete job applications. New Fire Safety Partnership with Shropshire Fire & Rescue Severnside and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are working in partnership to: • reduce the number of accidental domestic fires; and • reduce the number of fire related deaths and injuries. Jointly, we want to ensure tenants understand fire risk in the home, how to prevent fire related incidents and also how to identify and report defects within the home, which could contribute to a fire related incident. Tenants will be identified by Severnside staff and asked if they will consent to a visit from a Fire Officer to help them make sure their home is as safe as it can be to reduce risks. In the event of any fire related incident all tenants in nearby properties will be visited and given advice and reassurance. Tenants can also request a visit from Shropshire Fire and Rescue by calling us 0300 300 0059 or emailing enquiries@severnsidehousing.co.uk
Severnside Recycle for Cancer Research UK Since 2008, Severnside has donated £471.00 to Cancer Research UK by recycling its old mobiles with The Phone Recycler Ltd. Cancer Research UK funds scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner. No government funding is received for research, their live-saving work relies purely on donations. Pictured below is Tim Westlake, from our IT Team, handing over a box of old mobile phones to Dave Richardson from The Phone Recycler Ltd which will raise a further £220 for this great cause.
Justice Corner Severnside continues to work alongside a vast number of partners to reduce crime and disorder and tackle anti-social behaviour in our communities. The issues we talk about in Justice Corner are few and far between and through such partnership working we are able to ensure everyone lives in peaceful communities. It is those isolated incidents that we report on and I am sure you have all heard about the recent reports in the news in the Sundorne area – in two separate incidents, 2 bodies were found. Severnside worked very closely in partnership with the Police, Shropshire Council, the Education Authority and local residents to provide reassurance that all the appropriate steps were taken to deal with these incidents. Whilst the information portrayed by the press can be quite disturbing, it is apparent that the second incident is not classed as a murder and each agency involved has worked tirelessly with the local community to update everyone accordingly. Severnside will continue to keep in touch with the Police over the course of their investigations and take any appropriate action.
If you experience anti-social behaviour, or know someone who has, please don’t hesitate to call any of the appropriate agencies listed below:
