thesis project - urban walking
TEAM: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, PETROS LAPPAS-MANAKOS
This project is about reviving public space. This is an urban planning and designing renovation of a neglected area in the region o other words, an urban gap, which used to be a streamscape before buildings grew up very next to it. It is now identified as “gree but still very abandoned. What we tried to do is create a flowing public space, perfect for outdoor activities, using the tracing of the urban landscape. Many o on how people move and see. Respectively to this, by using the obtuse angle and the visual cone (human sight)we tried to interweav in a way that something new is always appearing to the flaneur.

Reforming the old Kavala port
TEAM: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, MINA ZARMPOU, ANGELINA OKANTARIDI, MARIETTA SPYROU
This area is an old neglected harbour, on the penisula of Panagia, in the region of Kavala city. The aim was both the emergence of the existing port facilities, which were not in use, and also their intergration into already existing urban landscape, so that a new area is opened again for the inhabitants. Our objective was to completely redesign this old-harbor area as a single open space, with a view to converting it into an environment of cultural events, leisure activities, sports, walking and relaxation. At the same time, reusing the old port facilities was a prerequisite for us, because of its architectural value. The restoration of the city's relationship with the study area is enhanced by the creation of an organised network of walking through regular staging areas, where it is given the possibility ,each time, to have a different perspective of space. Main concern was the rehabilitation of the city's relationship with the sea, the functional connection to the wider city as well as giving a new identity to this area.

Regaining character
TEAM: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, PETROS LAPPAS-MANAKOS, LOUKAS PROTOPAPAS, KONSTANTINOS TSIMPOURIS
In this old neighborhood of Thessaloniki, the goal was to renovate and revive this square that combines religion and history. The archeological area had to coexist with the church and the people that are visiting it. Main concern was to create a better access in this square as different people visit it for different reasons. Renovating this multicultural urban space was a real challenge.A metal roof for the cistern as well as a small museum for the -small- findings where among the requirements.

Reunite the gap
TEAM: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, PETROS LAPPAS-MANAKOS, LOUKAS PROTOPAPAS, KONSTANTINOS TSIMPOURIS
In this area we were asked to take a stand on urban gap and its utilization. After a morphological, urban and social analysis of this part of the city we focused on designing a network of open public spaces, by using the rear spaces of the buildings-inner (back) yards. This way we could connect a very unique turkish area of Xanthi, in decadency though, with the city centre. In addition, we tried to redefine the relationship of the inhabitants with the outdoor spaces, in which they live and manage. We created spaces suitable for playing, relaxing, socializing on daily routine that aim to all target groups-children,teenagers, middle-aged, elderly. The envision is that the maintenance of this area is also under the jurisdiction of the residents, contribuiting that way in their preservation.

‘parasite’ housing cell

Finding the host and the parasite... The project's aim was to create an expanding city - such as an emergency city for refugees, flooding or earthquake victims or even a dormitory - that could firstly 'parasite' in a good way and secondly have the possibillity of enlargement as necessary. We chose to parasite anywhere. In any wall or ground that could be the host. That way an emergency camp or a student city can be easily created no matter the space. Giving the opportunity to each person/family to actually built its own home was exactly combined with the idea of parasite. Each box indicates a place(bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, shared room). The people could choose how many rooms-shared or not, whether a kitchen or not plus they get to choose next to whom they put their residence. The minimum of 'standard living' was required because of the temporariness of the situation.Because of that the furniture in each room are embedded in the same construction panel, providing the opportunity to the user to hide or reveal them, whenever needed. The standardization of construction and the easy assembling was one more challenge.

EORGIA, ZARMPOU MINA
This project was 'your-choice' project. This means that was entirely to our judgment what the proposal building would be, combining also our personal capacity to understand what the area needed the most. In a very nice area of Athens, hill of Sicily, we were challenged to propose what we think it was appropiate. The hill of Kalithea, its other name, in Athens is a blighted area but still very beautiful. Making a mall that would attract consumist public was not the aim. On the contrary, lacking of social policy for elderly people a community center that provides a home and simultaneously a job for over 65-years old people would be a perfect match. In the lower levels there is a social kitchen and many kind of laboratories, where the elderly could actually be the teachers and provide services to the neighborhood- like knitting, cooking, pottery and create other artificial products. In the upper levels there are small residences for couples/individuals so that a 'new city' is developing. In addition to that a social infirmary/clinic as well as small commercial stores serve the daily needs. This way, also, people of the neighborhhood are attracted for their individual needs and the intergration of this apartment building is achieved.

Student dormitory in Xanthi
team: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, LAPPAS PETROS-MANAKOS
For a student dormitory we chose to create a kind of ‘village’ in stead of a huge apartment building. The idea was to establish an over road network that could be the same useful as the one on the ground. Furthermore, this network could also connect the houses and provide easy outdoor access, even in the upper level. The neighborhoods, created by this network and its frills, are the transition from private to public spaces. That's why those connection paths create one system with the outdoor and the indoor routes.

This project was about considering the modern way of life with combination of co-living. Creating a residential complex ,whoose inhabitants could have their own outdoor space but still being part of the complex's public space was the main goal. Small back and front yards are part of a bigger patio.

Having a favorable location, next to Kosinthos river and at the same time beside a busy road-bridge, definitely this place consist a hub.The idea was to connect 2 schoolyards, by taking advantage of the terrain. We thought that-apart from the standard flat schoolyard- a more protected back yard would be like having a garden in the backround. The roof was detached from the classrooms creating ups and downs. This way the sense of a 'flying' roof indicates the vitality and liveliness as befits in a school.

Folk Museum of Xanthi
team: SEVASTI GEKTIDOU, VOUKIA GEORGIA, KECHAGIA ALEXIA
Next to the old town of Xanthi, a folkloric museum is more than necessary. The question arose, was the 'display' issue. And more detailed the way it's better to display and expose an exhibit -an other project- and how this could be combined with the route, the visitors follow. Our purpose was to create a particular interior promenade. Nothing like the usual long corridors. We wanted the visitors to repass from part of the museum and seeing the exhibits from a different view. This led us to the double, but in different levels, route. The metal roof was chosen to be a metal mesh netting.

MEDS workshop - 'Reaction' theme / Lisbon, Portugal Small interventions for improving everyday life, in the city of Lisbon, was the target of this workshop. The aim of this project was to revert a small square - in the famous region of Graรงa- into a shady place, where people could wait for the tram. Already used construction pipes were transformed into columns and beams, and by using joints, stable junctions were achived. This metal pipes contributed this small public space to gain a new character and add a modern style, totally intergrated, in the heart of the old town of Lisbon. Revitalizing this square and returning it to its habitants was a challenge that reminded me the real needs of people, regarding architecture.

‘Le mur est dur’
CONSTRUCTION CLASS 2011-2012
Part of the construction class was to create this urban wall which we named 'le mur est dur' (the wall is hard). This small intervention in the city of Xanthi was a collage-decollage announcement wall - in the central square - where the locals could post events, advertisements, announcements of even advertise their own business or their art work in a legal (free of charge!) way. In addition, giving them the opportunity to change the position of the squared panels from the back, aimed, fistrly, to create a very unique and interesting urban puzzle and at the same time prevented the back side from being appalling. The project was entirely studied by students and built with the guidance of the metalworkers of the municipallity of Xanthi.

During my internship i was both participating in direct assignment projects as well as invited or open competitions. I was involved in every part of the process, from sketching till the final illustrations. What i gained from this period in Stockholm, apart from computer skills, is also the abillity of expressing my thoughts possitively and working in a team spirit. VATTENSCEN
