FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WH AT ’ S T HE P OPUL AT ION OF SE WA RD? Seward’s year-round population is approximately 2,800 residents. During the summer, our population nearly doubles as seasonal workers arrive to support our tourism and commercial fishing industries. WHERE IS KEN A I F JORDS N AT ION A L PA RK A ND HOW D O I GE T T HERE ? The park is located just outside of Seward. Exit Glacier is the only area of the park accessible by road. If you are here without a car, shuttle and taxi services are available between Exit Glacier and Seward from May through September. Boat tours—including wildlife cruises, private charters, kayaking trips, and some sportfishing trips—are the most accessible way to experience the fjords, tidewater glaciers, and marine wildlife. Weather conditions make the park more difficult to access in the winter. Great options exist for winter recreation in the Exit Glacier area. WHERE IS THE BES T PL ACE TO SEE WILDLIFE ? Generally speaking, you’re more likely to see a greater variety of marine wildlife the further you travel into Kenai Fjords. Sea otters and sea lions can be spotted year-round from the waterfront path and when walking the docks in the harbor. During the summer months, humpback whales and occasionally orcas can be spotted from the downtown waterfront or from Lowell Point. Moose and black bear are more likely to be spotted around Exit Glacier. WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE T HE NORT HERN LIGH T S ? Possibly, during late September or early October through April, when the skies are dark enough. Your ability to see the aurora depends on good solar flare activity and clear skies. A full-day marine wildlife tour will take you deep into Kenai Fjords National Park where you’ll see tidewater glaciers, harbor seals resting on floating ice, impressive rock formations, and countless birds. Not only will you fully appreciate the activities listed above with a more relaxed itinerary, you’ll have time for more spectacular forays into the wilderness. Winter ITINER ARIES

A DAY IN SEWARD

Options abound in the winter for a day trip to Seward. Book a behind the scenes tour at the Alaska SeaLife Center, enjoy our trails without the crowds, or take a half-day boat tour of Resurrection Bay. After you’ve built up an appetite, take advantage of a little-known secret: Several chefs showcase their talents with winter specials and creative menus not available in the summer. After lunch, go for a skate on Second Lake, a walk along the waterfront path or head to the sledding hill behind the elementary school. Join a local artist’s “paint and sip” and create your own masterpiece, or wrap up the day with a hot drink and watch the last rays of light disappear over the mountains.

A WEEKEND IN SEWARD

A full weekend in Seward will allow you to explore like a local. Book a cozy cabin or a room with a view (often deeply discounted). Options abound for winter recreation: lay first tracks on a heli-ski trip, skate ski on Bear Lake, or crosscountry ski down to Exit Glacier. Or bask in the solitude with a leisurely walk along the waterfront and an indulgent spa treatment. Join us for winter-only activities like community movies with $2 admission, set-menu extravaganzas by award-winning chefs, open mic nights, and organized “Winter Weekends.” Plan ahead to celebrate our signature events with us, from the Seward Music and Arts Festival in the fall to the Polar Bear Jump Festival in January.

Mount MARATHON RACE & JULY 4TH FESTIVAL

In 2017, Outside Magazine declared, “Mount Marathon is the Toughest 5K on the Planet.” Seward’s Mount Marathon Race is regarded as one of the hardest short-distance mountain races in the world. Up to 30,000 people descend on Seward to watch the mayhem and celebrate Independence Day.

Fireworks ring in the holiday.

36 | PL S EC AT NI O N N A M E

The grueling course climbs 3,022 feet above sea level, followed by a fast and dangerous descent. The 3.1-mile course has as an average slope of 34 degrees and is 60 degrees at its steepest. The first organized race was held in 1915, making it one of the oldest footraces in the country. This year, 1,000 gutsy women, men, and children— including multiple generations of Alaskan families—will tackle the mountain on race day. Learn more at mmr.seward.com.

Racers and spectators get festive.

Timing your trip

our SUmmer Season

What are you hoping to see and do? To see a migrating animal or to catch a specific type of fish, you’ll want to plan your trip around that objective. Some folks prefer our shoulder seasons for lodging deals and fewer crowds. And winter is a local favorite. Give us a ring for more specific advice.

Excellent marine wildlife viewing is available all summer long. During early summer, we welcome back our migrating whales and seabirds, and halibut fishing picks up. We enjoy nearly ‘roundthe-clock light in mid-summer; this is a great time to catch a variety of fish. Peak salmon fishing occurs in late summer.

The “ best” time to visit Seward depends on your priorities.

visit like a local We’d love to see you in Seward this year. Here are a few tips on blending in with the locals while you’re here. TAKE IT EASY Observe posted speed limit signs, including 25 mph through downtown. Take extra care to watch for pedestrians in town, and for wildlife along Seward Highway and Exit Glacier Road. BE A HIGHWAY HERO Lights are required on Seward Highway at all times. Spot some cool wildlife? If it’s safe to do so—not on a blind corner!— pull over to the shoulder before quietly observing the animal(s). When driving, let others safely pass. Take your time and enjoy this scenic byway! Highway conditions are available online at 511.alaska.gov.

KEEP SEWARD GREEN We’d appreciate it if you’d pack out any trash that you may find on the beach or trail—that’s what most locals do. When exploring town, bring or purchase a reusable shopping bag; a ban on singleuse plastics goes into effect April 1, 2019. And of course, recycle whenever possible. Thank you for helping us keep our town beautiful for everyone to enjoy! BE BEAR AWARE Seward is home to brown (grizzly) and black bears, yet attacks are rare. These animals deserve the utmost respect when sharing their space. Avoid surprising bears by making noise and traveling in groups when hiking. If you encounter a bear, keep your distance, wave your hands slowly, and talk calmly and firmly to the bear to identify yourself as a human. You can find more information about staying safe in bear country at the Kenai Fjords National Park headquarters in the harbor district, at the Exit Glacier Nature Center, or online at nps.gov. 42 | PL A N

TAKE CARE OF THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE CARE OF YOU Seward’s population swells in the summer with seasonal residents who help provide exceptional experiences for our visitors. These folks are your hardworking tour guides, deckhands, servers, housekeeping staff, and more. Tipping is customary for a job well done. Gratuity guidelines are simple. Tip tour guides (fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, hiking, etc.), restaurant servers and taxi drivers 20 percent for good service. Consider tipping more if the service was outstanding and you can afford it, especially for full-day or multi-day trips. If you’re less than thrilled with your experience, tip 10 percent and consider speaking privately to a manager. Lodging guests should tip housekeeping staff $2 to $5 per day. Saddling up to the bar? Tip $1 to $3 per drink depending on the time required to make it. A little generosity goes a long way here.
