Welcome to Seward for the 95th running of the Mount Marathon Race, the oldest and zaniest mountain race in North America! We’re thankful to again hold the race and the festival on the Fourth of July. Start times this year are 9 a.m. for the juniors, 11 a.m. for the women and 2 p.m. for the men.And don’t forget the exciting Mini Mount Marathon for 2-6-years-olds starting at 11:08 a.m. If you’ve never watched from the base of the mountain at the end of Lowell Canyon Road, announcer Adam Verrier returns to engage and inform spectators there. Other viewing options include staying downtown (and using binoculars to view racers’ progress) or ascending onto Mount Marathon itself on the Jeep Trail on First Ave. This year’s roster includes a record number of lottery winners and first-time racers. Help give them a Mount Marathon welcome they’ll never forget! This guide features an event schedule, Fourth of July Festival info, great photos and rosters with bib numbers for each race — plus an article about the legacy of the late Tom Gillespie, a feature on several rookie racers, insight into the wonderful life of Rubye Mayflower Blake, and a story about our expanded Livestream coverage. You’ll also find previews of all three races, including an attempt to break the 50-year-old junior record, a wide-open women’s event and a stacked men’s field of Alaskans challenged by runners from the Lower 48. Whether you’re a hardened Alaskan, a first-time visitor to Seward, a newbie racer or a veteran of dozens of Mount Marathons, we’re stoked you’re here and wish you and your families an amazing experience. —
