LO C ATED AT THE NORTHERN TIP OF RESURREC TION BAY, SEWARD HA S LONG BEEN A MARITIME DES TINATION . As Alaska’s only deep-water, icefree por t with rail, highway, and air transpor tation, the city of Seward is well-situated and easily accessible from Alaska’s major hubs and the Lower 48. However, Seward’s history as a meeting point long predates roads and railways. In the Alutiiq language, Seward is known as Qutekcak, meaning ‘big beach’ and served the Alutiiq, Sugpiaq, and other Alaska Native peoples as

a meeting area. The robust marine ecosystem and convenient geographic location made Seward, or Qutekcak, a mixing area for groups throughout Southcentral Alaska. Seward’s maritime history continues to grow and morph to the needs at the time. After the purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867, American settlers came to Seward and founded the city in 1903 as a supply base and terminal for a railway. Today, Seward is home to a variety of vessels, from the commercial fishing fleet to tour boats, as well as a trove of maintenance, education, and research opportunities.

Ice-free all year-round, SMIC is operational 365 days a year with a range of marine services available, immediate access to state highway and railroad systems, and Ted Stevens International Airport just a few hours away.

Over the past three decades, the city of Seward and the state of Alaska have invested in SMIC infrastructure and facilities, including the breakwater, with the goal of attracting marine industrial and commercial services, as well as maritime-related job training and research resources, and other economic development opportunities.

H AU L O U T C A PA B I L I T I E S

SMIC has a 330-ton Marine TraveLift, run by the City of Seward, and a 5,000-ton Syncrolift, privately run by JAG Industrial. SMIC BASIN

The SMIC basin is dredged to -21 feet MLLW (mean lower low water - the average height of the lowest tide), with a depth adjacent to the North Dock of -25 feet MLLW, making SMIC a great option for vessels of all sizes. There is a barge ramp for vessels to use - call the Harbormaster at (907)224-3138 for availability.

SEWARD MARINE INDUSTRIAL CENTER Home of JAG Alaska the Seward Marine Industrial Center, or SMIC, is located across Resurrection Bay from Seward. Just about six road miles from the city, SMIC encompasses 15 square miles of coastal land and is home to full-service shipyards, painting and sandblasting services, marine electronics, and more. The area is constantly growing and evolving to meet the maritime needs of Alaska and beyond.

B R E A K WAT E R

SMIC’s new breakwater, completed in 2018, is a 960-foot structure that protects the deep-water port. Inside the protective walls of the breakwater, the surges of Resurrection Bay are manageable, providing a comfortable place for ship owners to tie up and work on their vessels.

There are several options for haul-out and dry-dock capacities available for nearly all marine work.

S TO R AG E & D RY D O C K I N G

SMIC also offers upland storage and maintenance and repair areas, all with the protection of the breakwater to insure safe maritime operations and mooring.

ALASKA RAILROAD PORT FACILITIES

Temperatures drop and snow falls, but spirits stay high in Seward.

The Alaska Railroad owns approximately 328 acres in a land reserve, which is used mostly for train operations, but also includes Seward Cruise Ship Terminal facilities, the docks and adjacent uplands, all to support intermodal operations.

TONSINA POINT

Each year, over 200,000 people and all types of cargo enter or exit Seward through the railroad facilities. Since the docks are directly connected to the Alaska Railroad system, freight and passengers are easily transported to key hubs such as Anchorage and Fairbanks, and the communities in between.

SHIPPING & TR ANSPORTATION The Alaska Railroad specializes in moving goods like lumber, heavy machinery, rebar, pipe and hazardous material and can transload commodities to and from ships, railcars and trucks. This is a popular option for customers without rail service directly to their facility. For those needing to transload, the railroad offers an all-inclusive transportation service alongside their shipping partners.

FREIGHT SHIP D O CKING The freight dock supports freight routes through the state, making connections to ports, rivers, and roads in every region. The 620 by 320 ft. freight dock is accessible on the west side and is equipped with seven fenders and nine mooring bollards. There is one mooring dolphin with a single bollard 71.5 ft. from the dock, which is accessible by a catwalk. Other features and utilities of the freight dock include: • Compacted gravel surface • Top-of-dock elevation: 20 ft. MLLW • Designated front ramp unloading / loading area • 8000+ sq. ft. paved area with electrical power and water service • Cranes and boom trucks available through terminal use permit holders • Fenced perimeter, card access gates and security cameras

DALE LINDSE Y SEWARD INTERMODAL FACILIT Y The 24,000 square foot Dale Lindsey Seward Intermodal Facility is 240-by100-foot and connects cruise and other maritime passengers to Seward and beyond. Located at 913 Port Avenue on the Cruise Ship Dock, the facility is available for rent from mid-September to mid-May, when not supporting cruise ship operations. The building has 25-foot ceilings, heated concrete floors, decorated walls, and ample parking. The venue can accommodate 800 for a sit-down event or 1,675 at a standing room event.

SEWARD CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL Seward is a pivotal port for cruises in Alaska. Many ships either start or end their journeys in Seward, using the adjacent Alaska Railroad or Seward Highway to shuttle from Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage.

The passenger dock is only occasionally used for light freight and logistics. Each 736 foot dock face is equipped with 10 fenders, 12 mooring bollards, and 2 mooring dolphins located 300 and 400 feet from the end of the dock. The Berthing Application, Terminal Use Permit and Terminal Tariff are available at the ARRC Seward Dock Office located in the Dale Lindsey Seward Intermodal Facility or found online at www.AlaskaRailroad.com. WILD ALASKA SEAFOOD The seafood industry touches nearly every facet of the Seward community and is one of Alaska’s largest economic industries, thanks to the rich fishing waters off the State’s coastline.

CO M M E R C I A L F I S H E R I E S

Each year, almost 6 billion pounds of seafood are harvested across the state. Salmon is Alaska’s most well-known fishery, making the state the number one producer of wild salmon in the world. But, salmon isn’t the only fishery run out of Seward. Other commercial fisheries include dungeness crab, lingcod, pollack, pacific halibut, and more.

SPORTFISHING

Seward has a well-earned reputation as one of Alaska’s premier sportfishing destinations. Our pristine waters are home to an incredible diversity of species, including all five varieties of Pacific salmon, halibut, rockfish, and lingcod. Saltwater combo fishing trips—targeting halibut, salmon, and rockfish—are a popular option from late June through early September.

Oppor tunities are endless for storing, cleaning, packaging, processing, or distributing seafood products in Seward and there are plenty of resources for every step of the seafood supply chain - from ocean to table. Local restaurant and retail seafood processing and distribution is a growing industry as demand for wild Alaska seafood increases, as well as foodie tourism with focus on local foods. Visit local seafood processors like Saltwood Smokehouse or OBI Seafood to try a taste of wild Alaska seafood. T I E D TO T H E O C E A N

Many Seward families have fished Alaska waters for generations. Whether it be on a gillnetter, longliner, trawler, or seiner - the hardy captains and crew possess an intimate understanding of the value of the fishing way of life and add an important and distinct strand to our community.

Mariculture is a growing sector in Seward and big things are happening at the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute. The Institute is conducting research and development to enhance mariculture throughout the Pacific Northwest, including molluscan shellfish, king crab, and sea cucumbers. They also provide seed string starts for budding kelp farms across Alaska, and are working to make this new industry economically viable!
