Project aim is to design an urban furniture by using the material combination “concrete and wood”. Team project with; Cansu Kaya
RESEARCH We searched for existing concrete urban furnitures and defined their main problems. A weak point of the material is that concrete has low durability towards tensile forces and relatively heavy material to provide mobility.
MATERIAL DISCOVERY Glass fiber reinforced concrete consists of high strength glass fiber embedded in a cementitious matrix. In general, fibers are the principal load-carrying members, to act as a load transfer medium between the fibers and to protect them from environmental damage. The benefits of glass fiber reinforced concrete are: - Allow to work with reduced wall thicknesses that provides mobility. - Durable to tensile, compressive, shear and bending forces.
PROTOTYPING
Liquid glass fiber reinforced concrete is poured into the molds coated with a lubricant for easy ejection.
Before openin the molds, concrete parts are left to solidify approximately 24-30 hours.
Then, concrete parts are moisturized to quicken the chemical reaction of the material.
Concrete parts are left to dry before assembly.
Metal connection parts (molded into the concrete) are fasten with bench clamps.
The bench is produced as a 1/1 scale prototype. For prototype, pine tree was used.
Sophomores of the METU Department of Industrial Design that took “ID202-Industrial Design II” course were offered to select two or three materials among wood, concrete, glass, metal and stone and asked to design garden furniture. Students worked in groups of two or three and among them one selected wood-concrete and another woodconcrete-metal as their materials. Both teams designed new furnitures, and in order to reduce the weight both of them selected very thin sections of concrete. For that reason they preferred to utilize glass fiber-reinforced concrete to provide the necessary strength and flexibility in their design. With the help of a carpenter, they produced their own molds and cast their concrete at the METU Department of Civil Engineering Construction Materials Laboratory. Later, they joined the concrete sections with the other materials and finished and presented their designs to jury members of their department. Students mentioned that concrete’s biggest advantage over other materials is its ability to be cast in various shapes. When compared to the other garden furniture materials mainly concrete’s durability and economy manifested itself over others.
