Take a whiff Sims and simettes, cuz Spring is here at last OK so, it’s still cold outside… and it’s February… and I still can’t see my lawn...But today, the sun set about an hour later (yay!), so I will take it! Any old’ reason to start thinking about a wardrobe overhaul, right?! Thankfully in our Sim world we can finally live through all the joys of the seasonal wardrobes (thank you The Sims 3 SEASONS) - or not (thank YOU, Shift + Click ground)...at SF Magazine, however, we decided to forgo this seasons typical “Spring” inspired fashion for something a bit more “adventurous” - SF Magazine’s homage to the more fun and creative side of Sim- fashion. So if you are looking for something a bit different; then you’re definitely in the right place. This month’s issue has got your fantasy inspired shoots like Asia’s whimsical “Alice: Adventures in Wonderland”– Sexy superheroes, in Darko’s “Bad Super Hero” – Sexy super heroines in Simeve’s “La Sim Nikita” and, well, pretty much everything else in between. Truly a fun hodgepodge of some of our staff’s most creative work yet – we do hope you enjoy!

While I’ve got all of your attention, we at SF would also like to announce that we are planning a re-haul of our website. Unfortunately, with all the work that goes into the magazine, it has been sorely neglected - and for that we apologize to all our site members. We are, however, working on updating and introducing new fun content, committing ourselves to evolve in not just bringing you top features and visuals, but to increase our commitment to finding new and unique features for you to try in order to further enhance your Sims experience. To start things off we plan on bringing back one of our most popular photography competition - check out this issue’s ad This competition will feature some great prizes, which includes a copy of The Sims 3 University Life, as well as an internship and Fashion editorial with SF Magazine. Dyesterday ear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And things went on just as usual. I wonder if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning?

ashionable choices abound for Adult & Young Adult Sims. No matter what your style, it’s out there. But for the younger Sim, the going can get a bit tougher. Well we say those who cry that they can never find attraction cloths for the discerning younger Sim should take a moment and check out lilka. lilka makes great Adult wear, but the bulk of her excellent creations are fashionable items for those forgotten teens, children and even toddlers. While planning this interview I have to say I downloaded almost all of lilka’s creations and haven’t regretted one yet. We’re happy to have this chance to get to know her better... Please tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Katharina, I’m married and have two wonderful daughters and a maltese dog named Lilly. I live with my family in Germany. I’m a FA Artist at TSR, and happy to be a member of the TSR family. In my free time I love to create clothes for the Sims. It has become my new hobby and my daughters are my harshest critics. Otherwise I like to read. I’m interested in photography and psychology. I like to see comedies, love sport and I’m a fan of Depeche Mode.

M I LOVE your creations. They are

so fun and fresh! How would you describe your personal style? I’m very happy to hear that you like my creations. That encouraged me to keep going :) My personal style is casual, simple & sporty. Not too chic. I also like to wear jeans and T-shirt and the colors black & white. Why did you decide to create mainly for teens and younger? It gives me a lot more fun to create clothing for children than for adult Sims. I don’t exactly

know why, but I think because the kids clothes are colorful, playful and funny. I just love it and I have a lot more ideas and I can really let off steam. In addition there are not so many clothes for kids, so I try to balance it somehow :)

What inspires you to create? And where do you find inspiration for the things you make? I admired all the artists who created such great creations for the game and I still do. I was curious and wanted to find out how to create the essential clothes for the Sims. I realized that it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be easy. Especially because almost all of the tutorials are in English and my English is very bad. Nevertheless, I have not given up. I was very ambitious and have practiced and tried until I understood it. Especially I thank Ekinege for their great clothing tutorial. So it happened that I began to create for the Sims. It was really spontaneous and I never thought that one day I would be a FA Arist. I take my inspiration mainly from the Internet, from magazines with children clothing and from my surroundings. There are many wonderful clothes for children and when I like something, I try to imitate it. Most of the clothes I made for teens and kids do exist in real life. I also get requests and try to investigate this, as well as possible.

T What are some of the joys

of creating for the Sims? What are some of the frustrations? I have alot fun on creating. I love to create, especially if I manage to create

the creation that looks exactly as I had imagined. I just love it and when I’m done with a creation I’m looking forward to the next. But the greatest joy I have, when I get positive feedback on my creations, it’s the biggest reward for me. Then I’m happy. I think the most frustrates I have, when I don’t succeed at meshing sculpt a mesh as desired.

What advice do you have for aspiring Sims designers? The budding Sim designers shouldn’t give up if some projects don’t succeed immediately as you could imagine. You will quickly get discouraged and want to quit. That was how I felt in the beginning. The more you create and perform, the more it really pays off. The best and the most understandable clothing tutorial for me was from Ekinege on TSR. Download it too, and you will see, that it’s not as difficult as you think :)

In the future, what would you like to see more of in the Sims games and in the Sims community as a whole?

My favorite add-ons in Sims 2, were Pets and Seasons. That were the two I wanted the most for Sims 3. Because the add-ons are already available, I would wish that EA comes out one vacation add-on, where Sims can really make a vacation, relax and enjoy the free time. Otherwise I’m completely satisfied and I’m exited for what comes next. :)

BRAINSTRIP PRODUCTIONS Gus Rockman, out of Argentina, is the creative mind behind Brainstrip Productions and received accolades for his futuristic film Neon at SIFF in spring 2012. He is considered by Simatography a “Machinima Master”, one who has expert experience in creating machinima and all of it’s components from costumes to editing and soundtrack to storyline. While Neon was a more serious

storyline, Gus does provide lighter offerings such as “A Day in the Life of a NPC” and his Halloween offering of Dead Dream where he manages to create a rather large zombie hoard. Gus is as creative as he is meticulous with his machinima, a perfectionist in every way. There are many ideas running around in his head and will be interesting to see what he comes out with next.

ims are a matter of taste. Some are... extreme. Some are so drop dead gorgeous they’re almost scary and some are just so dang pretty you have to put them in your game. The Sims of Buckosnort fall into this category. They have a dreamy soft quality that makes them unforgettable. Buckosnort’s Sims are like that third bed in the Three Little Bears... juuuusssst right.

We’ve been following her Sims 3 page the forum thread for a while now and now her blog. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with this talented Sim maker. Please tell us a bit about yourself. Also I’m dying to ask... where does the name Buckosnort come from? My name is Allison and I am a bit of a Sims-addict. Some things that I love include anything vintage, photography, editing, playing Sims of course and music because what is life like without it? Anyways back to Sims! I have been playing the Sims ever since it first came out a long time ago, though I didn’t know that there was a lovely Sim community online until Sims 3! When I was playing way back when I spent a lot of time playing with families and building them nice houses. I really miss being able to play with my Sims but in other cases I love what I do now! In-game I spend a lot of my time creating Sims, taking pictures and editing them. I have just gotten a grasp on editing pictures and I feel like I’m getting much better at it now! My username buckosnort was actually my brothers nickname and ever since I heard it, it stuck with me! It sounds kind of embarrassing but I love it, especially since I get the unusual nicknames on the site such as bucky and bucko :) 97

What made want to start creating for the Sims? I have always loved creating! If I had known about the Sims community before, I would have started sharing my creations a long time ago. What really made me want to start creating was all of the talent that other Simmers obtained. After I had signed up online, I remember myself looking through the Sim Exchange pages and thinking “Wow I wish I could make a Sim like that!” Then the next thing I knew, I was creating Sims to share with everyone! Why did you make the decision to start your own blog? My decision to start my own blog started when I wanted to advertise my Sims. I also loved the idea of customizing a blog that fit my personality and not on My Page which is very plain. I would also say that I wanted to make a blog so that I could post updates on my Sims and my own life :) What are some of the joys of maintaining your own blog site? What are some of the challenges? One of my favorite things about having my own site and maintaining it is when I log into my email and I see notifications for new comments over at my blog. Lovely comments warm my heart and they are one of my most favorite things in the world. I also enjoy being able to customize it like I said before. One of my challenges is posting updates. I’m really bad at it! But other then that

I don’t have a lot of trouble with having my own site. If I have trouble or any questions I go on Google! Who are some of your favorite Sims creators and why? I’d say my favorite Sim creators are Vacakmorgo and ChemicalWibs. Their Sims are always so breathtaking, realistic and very unique. Both of them inspired me to start creating! I have seen their Sims for a while now and they never cease to amaze me. These two literally have true talent when it comes to making Sims. On average how long does it take you make a Sim? When do you look at that special Sim and say “This one is ready to show the world”? This may shock some people, others not but on average probably 1-2 days depending on my availability to be in-game. I actually recently moved my game over to a new User on my computer and now my game is much faster, so that average will probably drop. This is how I know that my Sims are ready to be shown to the world! In my head I go through some minor questions such as... Is this Sim unique? Realistic? Would other people like to have him/her in-game? When all answers are yes, I upload them! I also know that I am ready to show everyone when I open up my photo editor and start making their headshot. The headshot to me is very important. When I see that it is perfect and is upload ready, that’s is when I know :) Besides your awesome new image editing forum thread, what advice do you have for aspiring Sims creators out there? My advice to aspiring Sim creators would be this: Do not be afraid to show people what you have created. Don’t hold back thinking that he/she isn’t good enough and that no one will like them. Everyone creates different looking Sims and everyone has a different taste. There will always be someone out there that loves your Sims :)

In addition, If you want your Sims to be known you need to advertise. I think the best way is to start posting them over at the Forums. Once you make friends that are in-love with your creations, they will keep supporting you. You may also want to create a blog or even start a showcase thread. Whatever you choose, do not be scared! Let the world know that these are my creations, go and check them out! In closing, what would you as a creator and a lover of the Sims like to see more of in the Sims community and the Sims as a whole? Some things that I would like to see for the Sims as a creator would be some curly male hair. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see much of it around and I would love to use it on my Sims. I would also like to see height added to the game. Some people say that it is impossible because then many of the actions between Sims would be glitchy but I still have high hopes :) What I would like to see when it comes to games is possibly a vacation expansion pack which I imagine to be sort of like the Castaway game for the Ps2. I love the idea of boats, cruises and being able swim and fish in the ocean. For the Sims Community, I would love to have My Page customization back. I miss being able to change the background on my pages :)

rowsing through the expansive BauFive Studio, one can’t help but appreciate the thoughtfulness that goes into each creation—from the initial concept sketches, to the vast number of options packed into each object, to the very descriptions that show up in Buy mode. I was thrilled to discuss with Eric from BauFive the magic behind his art. Bill: It’s clear from your work that you have an eye for art and style. Do you have a background in the arts, and are you able to translate that experience into your Sims creations? Eric: While my college studies were inclusive of art history and technique, the majority of my jobs have done a better job of preparing me and introducing me to new ideas. I worked for many years in the picture framing industry, and that honestly exposed me to a broad range of art and ideas, not to mention meeting a number of creative people either as customers or my colleagues. It’s an interesting combination of being both a visual job, but also a hands-on one. Both kinds of jobs are often about the little details, taking pride in one’s work—being a little type A personality helps, too—not to mention a healthy dose of humility. I actually learn something new every day—not many people can say that. I think my focus on details definitely helps with creating for the game. Bill: What made you decide to start creating for the game? Eric: When custom content started to show up for the Sims 3, I found there wasn’t much of a focus on the things that I was truly interested in—mainly art. I started teaching myself to clone paintings and rugs, but at the time there were very few created for the game and so many of the meshes were cloned on single texture meshes. I spent countless hours tinkering and experimenting… it was turning into a bit of an obsession. Bill: Where do you draw inspiration for your creations? You describe in your blog the years living in Boston as having a profound impact on you and your personal style. Eric: I pull from my personal life for many pieces, and then I also read… a lot: blogs, trade publications, magazines while standing in line at the supermarket… but I don’t think you have to do all that. I look at a lot of this stuff for my work—I need to keep current of trends and colors. I can also be

inspired by walking through a new (to me) shop or one of my “haunts.” I used to spend a great deal of my free time, when I lived in Boston, searching for new and interesting antiques. It was like a mission. Boston, when I lived there, had a thriving music scene, amazing galleries and museums, and tons of antique shops. You could spend the day on Charles Street alone— not that I could afford to. I went to school there,

and I lived there for many years—it’s absolutely ingrained in me. Sometimes stepping away from what you know makes you appreciate it more— even if you’re not actively aware of it. I think that appreciation often infects my work. Bill: What advice do you have for aspiring creators? Where would one start, and what tools do you use and find most helpful?

Eric: Create for your game first and foremost. I think it really shows when someone creates an item for themselves—there’s something about it that stands out. Be patient. Don’t take shortcuts. Take pride in your work. There are many ways to get to the same point. Some are better than others and no one can tell you how YOU learn, so read many tutorials until you find one that helps you to understand. I can only speak from my own experiences when I give advice. I try to remind someone that what works for me might be completely convoluted for someone else.

Bill: What other Sims creators do you admire or consider as mentors? Eric: That list is extensive. Back about three years ago when I made the decision to start, the people who were creating were less plentiful. Exotic Elements, Around the Sims 3, Verona Relapse, Awesims, Land of Woe, Club Crimsyn— they all inspired me to want to create—their still creating at all is because Heidi at Exotic creations are still strongly represented in my CC Elements reached out to show me how to get to folder. I think it’s fair to say the reason I am the next stage of creating. She asked to see my last creation, and when I sent it to her, she saw some fundamental errors that she helped me to overcome. I had learned only some things from the tutorials, but she had practical knowledge about specific aspects of my own creations that revolutionized the way I think about pulling BauFive Studio together and mapping a mesh today. Bill: What proportion of time would you say that you spend creating for the game versus playing

it? Have you made in-game versions of your dogs Jaxon and Laika? Eric: I can be uneven between playing and creating— since Supernatural, I have mostly played the game— it wasn’t the supernatural elements that made the game interesting—there were a lot of new interactions that made the game fun. Laika has a Sim equivalent—annyway, whom I met through LivingSims and has since become a dear friend, was kind enough to create a surprisingly accurate version of her. I was so excited to have her in my game—I have a link in my blog. Jaxon is still waiting his turn. To date there is not a Sim me—I like to keep my game bordering on the unreal—if it was too much like my own life, I would not be inspired to play.

World Showcase Build Avalon by Bakafox

Avalon is a small fantasy map, started as a realm for the fae a little after Supernatural was announced. It is a “Builder’s World” and has only a single lot placed on it, which can be destroyed in Edit Town/Edit World mode once loaded up in game- the lot is a base camp, and is there for people who use Nraas’s “Traveler” mod for vacationing their Sims in other base worlds. I used custom textures imported for trees, these will not spread into any of your other worldsthey’re just part of the world package file itself. The terrain paints are a mix of standard EA ones and a few custom grasses, and I used a custom moon graphic- this was done before Supernatural,

and the phasing introduced in SN will not properly work with my recolor. The skies and lighting also were altered slightly. It is flagged as a normal “base” world, so wild animals such as deer (and horses unless turned off in options) will appear. I tried to keep roads straight enough in many places that lots would be easy to place along them in the in-game editor, but there are the curves that will mean a few gaps. Sometimes the gaps can be hidden away by placing some trees, rocks, or bushes in the in-game editor, or if one is working on a ‘rural fae’ type world, little faerie cottages can be scattered away from the road further, with more trees added, as an idea. Because I have the textures as part of the world, any trees you place that I have recolored will be recolored, on or off lots.

World Building: I really love world building, I spend far more time doing it than playing the Sims, I usually have at least three worlds in progress at any given time, and I come up with ideas at the drop of a hat. I hope to do more of these builder’s worlds, since they let me have fun with a theme, without my having to also build hundreds of lots, and they also let me (hopefully) encourage others to build and create. Making an entire world from terrain shaping to finished lots takes hundreds of hours, and this way people have a springboard that lets them do things in a more reasonable timeframe.

Getting Started: For anyone out there who wants to give worldbuilding entirely a go, all I can say is read tutorials, find tutorial videos, and post your questions on forums for them on sites like MTS and others. There are a lot of super helpful people out there, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve guided me from my first attempts to figure out what I was doing to my current projects, where I still am not perfect, but can tell Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m getting better every time. I have released (and intend to release more) some of my CAW files for worlds I have made. They can be found at Mod the Sims and at BakaSims, along with brief instructions of where to put the files to load them up.
