Director
Happy Holidays! I hope this season brings you peace and joy. As we wrap up 2012 and start a new year, I am reminded that this is a perfect time for both reflection and looking ahead. At Campus Recreation we will be doing just that. We will be reflecting on this past semester and year to see where we had success and where we need improvement. We rely on participant feedback for much of that reflection, so thank you for those who have filled out comment cards and surveys or talked to our staff to offer praise or constructive feedback. We appreciate it and use that in our reflection. We will also be looking forward and doing strategic planning to keep Campus Recreation growing and doing our best to meet the needs of our students and members. We are excited to begin our equipment replacement plan and provide new cardio pieces for our patrons. We are also proud of our new radio station at the Rec called Axe’Em radio. This allows us to not only provide a good mix of music for everyone but also keep patrons informed of special events, changes in hours of operation, and inform them of the many great services and programs that we provide.

My hope is that we all take this season as a chance for honest reflection on the past year, thoughtful planning for what we would like to accomplish in the coming year, and joyful celebration of both with friends and family. May all the blessings of this season be a spark that encourages us all to not only be grateful for what we have, but to share those blessings with others who may be less fortunate.

2K12 Homecoming Events Raise Over $2500 for Scholarship Campus Recreation and the SFA Alumni Association hosted the 3rd Annual Lumberjack Homecoming 5K on Saturday, October 20. Over 100 participants from both the SFA and Nacogdoches community raced around the beautiful SFA campus in the crisp early morning. Award medals were given to the first, second, and third finishers in each age and gender category. Results can be found online under “Alumni Events� on the Campus Rec Alumni page of our website at www.sfasu.edu/campusrec. Engraved axe handles were also awarded to the overall male finisher, Braden Mullen, and the overall female finisher, Kortney Kuhl. Campus Rec and the Alumni Association also hosted the first Homecoming Disc Golf Tournament on Friday, October 19 at Pecan Park in Nacogdoches, Texas. Seven doubles teams competed to win prize packages and engraved axe handles. Steve Geryerman and Wesley Burch won the Professional Division, and Rex Bailey and Jacob Ford won the Beginner Division. These events raised $2600 for the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship for Campus Rec.

CAMPUS RECREATION ANGEL TREE There are Angel Trees for different causes and programs throughout the United States. The Angel Tree at SFA Campus Recreation was created to give SFA students the opportunity to give back to the Nacogdoches community. Since its opening in 2007, SFA Campus Recreation has displayed an Angel Tree in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center. This 2012 holiday season, the Angel Tree will benefit the Nacogdoches Medical Center and the Nacogdoches County Humane Society, along with the Purple Santa program at SFA which donates toys to children ages 5-12. Purple Santa benefits the Empty Stocking Fund in Nacogdoches County. The Angel Tree will be displayed in the Rec Center November 26 through December 14.
COMMUNITY IMPACT “Being a part of the Angel Tree Program for the last few years has been a wonderful experience for us, the public and for the pets residing here at the shelter. With the help of SFA’s Angel Tree Program, it has allowed each pet in the shelter to be able to receive Christmas gifts and treats each Christmas Eve when staff and volunteers have enough presents to hand out to each animal here. All of the pets absolutely LOVE their new gifts and they play with them until they are absolutely worn out and torn up.” -Jamie Shelton, Nacogdoches Animal Shelter “The coloring books, crayons, and children’s books always bring a smile to our patients. They are especially appreciated during the holidays as it is a nice surprise for the children. FITNESS AND WELLNESS Brittany Scott
Six years ago, military training triggered her passion for taking on physical & mental challenges. Since then, she has met her own fitness goals & motivated others to reach theirs. She completed her Bachelor of Exercise Science degree at Texas State University & is currently an NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
Training Philosophy – Brittany is constantly working to help individuals meet their health & fitness goals, including muscular hypertrophy, power, strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, plyometrics, technique & breathing, flexibility, prenatal & postpartum fitness, bodybuilding, injury prevention, corrective exercise, individual & group custom program design, & exercise nutrition.
Richard Drew
Richard is currently working on his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology with a minor in Nutrition. He received a personal training certification from the American College of Sports Medicine. He began training after playing his last year of college basketball in 2009 & realized how much he enjoyed helping others achieve their fitness goals. He truly enjoys seeing others excited about the gains in fitness & health they have achieved by sticking with an exercise program. Training Philosophy - A “Stability is Strength” approach - if someone has a strong stable base then they can truly have strength.

Matt enjoys training because he loves to get to know & help his clients. He started training because he wanted to better his personal health & do the same for others. Matt is certified with the National Council of Strength & Fitness & has just over one year of experience. Training Philosophy - To lead people to a better state of living & meet health, wellness & life goals while doing so.
Mitchell Robuck
Mitchell is a first year trainer. He has played ice hockey & football enjoys lifting weights, running & being generally fit. Mitchell is majoring in kinesiology & is certified through The Cooper Clinic in Dallas. Training Philosophy - Mitchell loves to motivate people to make healthier life style choices & to exercise daily!
Steven Hamner
Steven is a senior currently majoring in Kinesiology & minoring in Health Science. He is certified by the American Counsel of Exercise as a personal trainer. Steven played a year of college football, and, with his collegiate athletic background, he has been very blessed to learn from many great professionals and has had great experience & exposure to different training methods. Steven enjoys working with any client no matter their fitness level or goal that they are pursuing. Training Philosophy - Steven firmly believer in hard work. He believes not only working hard training wise, but working hard in life will bring positive results.
Sarah Swor
Sarah is a Fitness Manager, Personal Trainer & Yoga Instructor at the SFA Rec Center. She is certified through the American Council on Exercise & started training because she wanted to help people better their lives & obtain their personal fitness goals. When training, she likes helping people reach smaller goals eventually leading to their big goal, whether it is to lose weight, gain muscle, or just begin a healthy lifestyle.
Training Philosophy - The biggest reward from training is seeing how proud people are when they obtain a goal, or notice changes in their self. Fitness has always been a big part of her life & she loves showing people how it can change their lives.
Joseph Secrest
Joseph is a grad student and is a personal trainer, as well as a strength & conditioning coach. His fitness career started during the four years he spent as a defensive lineman for the SFA Lumberjack football team. As he strength trained, he also realized how important functional living is to everyone as they age. He has received a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology from SFA & is working on a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science. He is a certified personal trainer & most notably an ACSM certified Health Fitness Specialist.
Training Philosophy – There are two mottos when it comes to this profession, the first being “Exercise is the Best Medicine” & the second being, “Work Smarter NOT harder”. All clients are welcome, no matter the fitness level - we can reach your goals.

BLAST FROM THE PAST Where They Are Now An update on former Campus Rec employees
Taylor Lovinggood (Carney) worked at Campus Recreation for three and one half years. She began working as an Office Assistant, then moved up to be an Offices Services Supervisor. “Working for Campus Rec helped me in so many ways. I learned how to multitask even better than before, I learned how to keep cool in stressful situations, and most importantly I learned how to deal with frustrated and angry patrons.” Her advice to current Campus Rec employees is to “get involved in the activities, talk to the patrons, pro staff and coworkers because you can make life long friends working there.”

Taylor recently got married and currently works for Thompson & Marcet doing accounts payable and receivable.
Jonathan Albarado (Alby) graduated from SFA in 2011 with a Bachelors of Arts in Communication and Photojournalism. He started his career in Campus Rec working for Fitness from August 2008 to July 2009. He later worked as a Fitness Assistant and Graphic Designer January to August 2011. Alby admits it’s hard to pick a “best Campus Rec experience.” “I always had fun no matter what I was doing, and I think that had a lot to do with the atmosphere of campus rec but also the people who worked there as well. Whether I was working in the bullpen or helping out around the Rec Center, I was surrounded by people who enjoyed coming to work, and it made all my experience’s fun and enjoyable.” Alby says working at SFA Campus Rec helped him gain important, transferable skills, including “time management, customer service and communication to leadership, creativity and confidence.” He says that these skills he learned at Campus Rec have helped him be successful in managing his eight student staff and working with his other coworkers. His advice to current Campus Rec employees: “One, be thankful that you have a job and two, be thankful that you work at the coolest place on campus. Work hard and continuously learn new things. Always come to work with a positive attitude. Remember, you are providing a service to the campus, and when are happy and energetic, it will carry over to the patrons and guests. You never know what a simple smile and a ‘Hey, welcome to Campus Rec. How are you today?’ can do to some one’s day.” Alby currently works at Texas A&M University-Commerce as the Marketing and Promotions GA and is working on a Master’s Degree.

Sport Clubs NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS
Baseball Club is Newest Addition to Sport Club Family
On October 11, 2012, the Baseball Club was approved to join the Sport Club program. The club will be participating in the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) and will play in District 7 West of the NCBA where they will play district ball games against Lone Star College – Tomball, Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, Texas Christian University, and Houston Community College District. The Baseball Club will also play the likes of Tulane, University of Houston, Rice University, among others from around Texas and Louisiana. The club had 23 students come out for tryouts for the first squad as they hope put together a competitive roster for the upcoming season. Season play will begin in February 2013, but the club will compete throughout the fall for non-league play.
Sport Club Fall Updates TENNIS - The Tennis Club has had a busy semester. The club has traveled to College Station, Waco, Arlington, Denton, and Corpus Christi so far this semester. The club has been able to field two teams in each meet so far this semester. They recently hosted their annual Lumberjack Open tennis tournament. RESULTS BASS TEAM - Kyle Turner and Blaze Platt traveled to Russellville, AR the first weekend in October to compete in the FLW Southern Conference Regional Championships. After three days of fishing, the SFA duo finished with a final weight of 44 pounds, 8 ounces as they claimed SFA’s second Southern Conference Championship in as many years. On November 17-18, they traveled to Lake Sam Rayburn Reservoir, where Jordan Grimm took first in individuals, and Kyle Turner and Blaze Platt took first place as a team. They will host their annual Bucketmouth fishing tournament on December 15-16 on Lake Sam Rayburn Reservoir. SOCCER - The Men’s Soccer Club finished up their seasons in October. The men’s club finished its season at 3-3-1 this year, while the women’s team finished at 2-5. Neither team earned a berth to the Region IV South Tournament. Despite the records, the clubs showed great promise from their players to build off of going into the spring semester in non-league action. INLINE HOCKEY - Inline will began their march to the SCHL playoffs in November. League competition began on November 3 as the team traveled to Denton, where the team won twice and lost twice.
Rugby Legends Game Brings Alumni to Nac The Rugby Club hosted its annual Legends Game against the SFA Rugby Alumni on October 13. The alumni came out with the victory, but overall the club competed very spiritedly. The club has begun league play, travelling to Denton on November 17, where they won 77-26.

Donate to the
Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship Fund The Campus Recreation Department is excited to announce the creation of the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is created to provide financial assistance to current student employees of the Campus Recreation Department. Dr. Raymond “Ray” Worsham was the Intramural Department Director at SFA for 43 years prior to the creation of the Campus Recreation Department. Dr. Worsham was the keystone to the Intramural Department for more than four decades and his dedication and lasting impact is something that we will celebrate for decades to come with the creation of this scholarship. Under Dr. Worsham, intramural sports flourished to the highest numbers the program has ever seen. Thousands of students spent nights playing on the intramural fields, in the HPE and around campus over Dr. Worsham’s tenure. The strong intramural tradition lives on through our current sport offerings, THE intramural champ shirt, the contact we have with former student athletes in the program and we are privileged to honor him with this scholarship.
