The 2016 annual report is inspired by the story that numbers tell. The numbers reflect wide-ranging achievements: We served a record-breaking number of clients in 2016, donors and funders supported our work with unprecedented generosity, and our volunteers contributed countless acts of service toward our mission. These numbers give us great confidence that we will achieve a number we never dared dream possible: zero. Zero new HIV infections. Zero AIDS-related deaths. Zero HIV-related stigma.
As you read through our successes from 2016, we hope you take pride in these accomplishments. Your generosity and support enabled us to do things like enroll 1,085 clients on PrEP and provide 16,769 HIV and sexually transmitted infection clinical visits. It allowed us to distribute 2.7 million sterile syringes and save 522 lives from overdose. It has empowered us to reach 2.3 million people with online health information, and advocate for the thousands of people in California who rely on the AIDS Drug Assistance Program.
Throughout the report, we highlight a number of our accomplishments from the previous year – many of which reflect the creation of two innovative models of care. The first, Strut, provides a central location for our Magnet sexual health clinic, the Stonewall Project substance health services, and many of the STOP AIDS Project community engagement programs in the Castro. The second, our harm

ONE MISSION, THREE STRATEGIC GOALS In 2016, we continued to make progress on our ambitious five-year strategic plan. Established in 1982, our mission is the radical reduction of new infections in San Francisco because we refuse to accept HIV as inevitable. Through education, advocacy, and direct services for prevention and care, we are confronting HIV in communities most vulnerable to the disease. We strive to achieve three goals that underpin our vision for a healthy, thriving community. By committing to this bold vision, we will see the end of the HIV epidemic in San Francisco. We will build healthier communities We’re nurturing resilience in individuals and social groups, while reducing the harm associated with alcohol and other drugs. We will reduce new HIV diagnoses to fewer than 100 per year We’re tapping into medical advances and community power to steadily drop HIV rates for good. Our holistic and structural model is built on four interconnected areas to support people at every step along the continuum of care. Sexual Health Services Gay and bisexual men, transgender people and other communities affected by HIV can receive judgement-free HIV testing, STI screening and treatment. We also provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and have helped thousands gain access to this effective prevention tool and enroll in public programs to help pay for medications.

Mental and Substance Health Services Education, counseling and harm reduction services connect the dots between HIV, substance use and mental health. Clients benefit from opiate overdose prevention training, HIV testing, and hepatitis C testing and education. Through the Stonewall Project, clients access outpatient substance use treatment services and walk-in group and individual counseling.
Our services are offered in locations around San Francisco. Strut, the health and wellness center in the Castro co-locates sexual health services, mental and substance health services, and several community engagement programs. At the 6th Street Harm Reduction Center in the SoMa/ Tenderloin neighborhood, community members can participate in drop-in programming, health assessments, and syringe access and disposal programs. Our headquarters at 1035 Market Street is home to several community engagement activities and supportive services. Combined with the mobile testing unit and a network of satellite syringe access sites, the community can access the resources they need in a way that meets them where they are.
Community Engagement and Health Navigation Services Our distinct community engagement programs provide social support and case management for long-term HIV survivors and those newly diagnosed, as well as transgender individuals, African American men who have sex with men, and our Latino community. Through these programs, participants attend workshops, social events and support groups where they learn about risk reduction and treatment adherence. Our Health Navigation program and two Centers

STRUT: ONE YEAR OF SERVICE On January 4, 2016, we opened the doors to Strut, our fully-integrated health and wellness center in the Castro.
In 2016, we co-located Magnet sexual health services (including the PrEP Health Program), the Stonewall Project substance health services, and many STOP AIDS Project community engagement programs in a new home at 470 Castro Street.
In its first year alone, Strut held more than 80 community events bringing over 9,000 people through its doors. We helped more than 250 HIV-positive individuals access care and support programs through Positive Force. Between 60 and 80 people per day took advantage of sexual health services at Strut. Our Bridgemen members donated 2,612 hours of service to improving our community. Strut is open thanks to the generous individual, institutional and government donors who contributed to the Campaign for Health & Wellness, which made its public debut in 2015. At the end of 2016, the Campaign had achieved 97% of its $15 million goal thanks to 195 gifts. The Campaign is expected to close by summer 2017 – nearly a year earlier than expected thanks to the generosity of the community. We offer our heartfelt thanks to contributors to the Campaign, the Community Advisory Board and the Campaign Leadership Committee.

Thousands of people ate at their favorite restaurant to raise funds for San Francisco AIDS Foundation at our 16th annual Dining Out For Life. In honor of the Black Brothers Esteem (BBE) 20th anniversary, the City and County of San Francisco proclaimed July 7, 2016 as Black Brothers Esteem Day. Bob Grant, MD, MPH, Jen Hecht, MPH, and Pierre-Cédric Crouch, PhD, ANP-BC, each presented the work of San Francisco AIDS Foundation to thousands of attendees at the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.
The 6th Street Harm Reduction Center expanded from two days per week to six for a total of 44 hours per week. Hundreds more clients are now able to access harm reduction services.
Held at the San Francisco Armory, the annual Tribute Celebration honored BBE and Senator Mark Leno and raised a record $446,065.
More than 90,000 community members saw the “San Francisco AF” campaign, which premiered at the Castro Street Fair. The campaign helped introduce new donors to the Campaign for Health & Wellness.

State policy efforts resulted in the creation of the California PrEP Affordability Program, which will provide financial assistance to thousands of Californians with incomes below 500% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Hundreds stood with the foundation at events across San Francisco in observance of World AIDS Day. 301 runners dropped trou and raised funds at our annual Santa Skivvies Run, a onemile fun run through the Castro.

Federal policy efforts led to the passing of The Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act, which marked the first reauthorization of the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS since 1992. HOPWA helps fund our Housing program, which supports more than 380 San Franciscans living with HIV access.
THREE EVENTS, $17 MILLION RAISED Year round, events including AIDS/LifeCycle, Dining Out For Life, and the Santa Skivvies Run bring the broader community into our efforts to end the epidemic. These events raise awareness about what HIV means today and how everyone in our community has a part to play. In 2016, 3,022 AIDS/LifeCycle participants joined us on the 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Our annual event, in collaboration with the Los Angeles LGBT Center, raised an astounding $16.2 million. In addition to AIDS/LifeCycle, each of our special events had record-breaking years in 2016 and exceeded goals and expectations. Dining Out for Life raised $167,694 and Santa Skivvies Run raised $99,524. We’re so grateful to these top fundraisers from our 2016 events.
