ABSTRACT:

The Oistat Theatre Competition is an international ideas competition to design a floating theatre to be moored at a particular location on the Spree River, but capable of being moved to other sites along the river. This theatre will provide a performance space for an audience of 200 to 300 people with a stage accommodation for a cast of no more than 20 performers. Facilities for the audience, such as restrooms and refreshment areas, will be located on land. These facilities are capable of relocation when required. The interest amongst theatre practitioners in the use of temporary sites also drives the initiative to stray away from conventional theatre attributes. These settings can often provide a unique atmosphere, which resonate with a particular production or style of presentation, in a way that may not be possible in a conventional theatre design. The Site for the competition is on the northeast bank of the Spree River in Berlin in an area known as the “Holzmarkt. This part of the river was the boundary between East and West Berlin during the years of the Berlin Wall and as a result became a no mans land. The theatre is meant to revitalize the slow moving development in the area and showcase a symbol of evolution for the city of Berlin. Oistat intends to encourage a deeper understanding of the relationship between the performance itself and the space which it inhabits. Collaborations between architect and theatre practitioner are keynote objectives in the proper development and exhibition of experimental performances.

More recently, the craze of Electronic Dance Music |EDM| culture has swept across Europe. This music genre utilizes groundbreaking technology that requires a unique venue setting to properly display and enjoy the performance. Most theatre venues can be adapted to accommodate an EDM style performance, however, The Drop is designed specifically for this concert type. It maintains multiple instillations for acoustic, lighting, and visual stimuli that are unique to Electronic Dance Music presentation. The conceptual design in based solely on the intended user interaction of the theatre. The Drop is an initiative to create a venue that pioneers a technologically advanced atmosphere to maximize the experience of an Electronic Dance Music performance. It is a keynote objective to maintain the architectural principles of good design while collaborating with new technologies in the field of electronic performance. This is an experimental collaboration between architect and practitioner that can positively impact an up-and-coming style of theatre performance. The electronic music industry has only recently gained support in popular culture, subsequently, the venues for its’ performance are in their early paradigms of possibility. As Electronic Dance Music grows in popularity, there will be an increasing need for venues that can support this type of concert. The future of Electronic Dance Music is promising, and The Drop features an innovative perspective on the next generation of music performance.

The Holzmarkt is the center of the neighbourhood – physically and spiritually, the market, the creative village, the club and the restaurant invite, surprise, inspire and entertain. Artists, artisans, musicians and hedonists create with and for each other. - The words of the Berlin Cooperative

Successful performance spaces are designed based on key considerations that create a successful interaction between audience, artists, and technology. Some of these considerations include: audience cohesion, sightlines, and acoustics. The way that the audience is arranged plays a key role in creating a successful atmosphere where audiences feel engaged in the performance. It also allows performers to communicate with the audience efficiently. The sightlines are directly correlated to audience cohesion and synergy. To achieve an acceptable standard of communication, the audience must be as close as possible to the stage with an unobstructed view. This helps the audience distinguish the performers gestures while allowing appreciation of the scenic architectural space that they occupy. The Drop is equipped with a state of the art Lighting and Sound system that works cohesively with the architectural sightlines and spatial boundaries set in the design. The audience experience is the primary concern throughout the performance space. The Drop features an L.E.D Embed Glass Panel Facade |emmitance| that creates a luminous effect both inside and outside of the structure. The Façade coincides with two L.E.D. tower instillations located within the floating theatre that are interacting with the audience. This L.E.D. system is in direct correspondence to the EDM performance. New lighting and sound techniques can be explored with advances in kinetic and luminous instillations found within the construct. A primary DJ/Performance space is located slightly above the primary audience deck to maximize sightlines and acoustic efficiency. The booth features an offset roof canopy that holds a kinetic speaker/lighting system that amplifies the performance output. The name “The Drop” comes from the large subwoofer floating above the DJ Booth, serving as a symbolic totem for the theatre. It can be observed from almost anywhere is the construct. Instillations like this are as much iconic and they are functional, adding to the appeal of the theatre in the tourist industry. Circulation was given a heavy emphasis in the design phase, being that an occupancy of 400+ patrons had to be realized in a 5,000 square foot theatre. It is important to be able to move people efficiently throughout without impendences on the performances or public safety.

The Royal Docks area is currently affected by a complex mixture of dichotomies between international branding and grassroots efforts. The area needs a symbol of change to permanently remedy the negative opinions that civilians have of the area. I used the contemporary philosophy of architecture in Biomimicry to help develop this symbol. Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. The goal is to create products, processes, and policies—new ways of living—that are well-adapted to life on earth over the long haul (Biomimicry Institute). The philosophy helps to address sustainability issues with real world inspiration. The process models were designed to be extremely adaptable for the Royal Docks area while still providing a local iconic language for the area to be defined by. The models are details and precedent studies for what would later become the Thames 21 marine sanctuary. They reflect on issues of light exposure, weather exposures, and adaptable construction.

SOCIAL AMBIGUITY _how to mix market rate housing with affordable housing?

The site is located on the Thames River, with water bordering two of its sides. This is an ideal location for both residential units, and a community initiative that wants to positively impact the environmental waterway that it is located on. As people circulate through the site there is a lack of a predictable path. You do not know whether people are going to a market rate apartment, attainable housing apartment, or just circulating through the public aquarium. This helps to nullify any feelings of social tension that a specific social group might have for another group. The construct integrates and mixes market rate housing, affordable rate housing, and third space aquariums throughout the site in a way conducive for ambiguity. The final construct is meant to be an Architectural landmark in social integration and marine sustainability.

SUSTAINABILITY

Much of the faรงade is modeled after the Biomimetic study models from an earlier exercise in the project. This informs many issues of sustainability within the site. Structural details are meant to withstand the rough weather conditions that hinder the Royal Docks, while delicate transparencies create a pleasant atmosphere to reside in. Passive cooling techniques and exaggerated balconies also make for a limited environmental impact from harmful emissions.

STRATEGY _how do we really make an impact? 1. Create a modern hub of marine sustinablity. 2. Engage in local aid to rejuvinate the marine environment. 3. Educate society on the problems that the Thames faces. 4. Implement corrections for future generations.
