Case study: Chevron Canada Driver Buy-in and Engagement

In recent years, fully digitized driver safety solutions have revolutionized the way fleets approach safety and risk management. Utilizing GPS tracking, cameras, and AI technology, digital solutions make it easier than ever for fleets to roll out safety telematics across complex fleets, providing managers with effective tools for monitoring and analyzing vast amounts of data, changing driver behavior and increasing operational efficiency. This leads to significant and lasting improvements in driver performance, fleet safety and operational efficiency. Managing safety and risk in diverse fleets is a daunting task. With a broad variety of vehicles, ownership types, terrains and driving cultures, it is challenging to maintain control and visibility while still reducing costs and improving driver performance.

Case study: DULSCO

Identifying high-risk drivers, lowering accident rates and developing effective training approaches becomes even more difficult when your fleet has:

Many vehicles A variety of vehicle types (trucks, vans, cars, 2wheelers) A mix of vehicle ownership (grey fleet, contractors, or company vehicles) Routes that require specialized driving skills (on-road, off-road, urban and rural) Disparate driving cultures

Digital solutions make it possible for diverse fleets to implement driver safety telematics systems without the hassle of hardware installation. These solutions enable real time capabilities, allowing for ongoing fleet monitoring and quick response to safety incidents. This not only improves and sustains driver safety, but ultimately prevents injuries and saves lives.

Best Practice #1

Finding Clarity in a Sea of Data Transforming comprehensive data into actionable insights on a single platform. Improving and maintaining driver safety is extremely challenging. With so many variables to consider, from weather conditions to driver behavior, it’s almost impossible to stay on top of every aspect of fleet safety and performance. This challenge is compounded by the multiple management and safety platforms deployed across the corporation – platforms that are often operating in silos, so you can’t even see all fleetwide data in a single location, and the more data you collect, the harder it becomes to extract meaningful insights.

To manage fleet safety effectively, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive view of all vehicles and incidents. A unified view is the key that allows fleet managers to establish a single, reliable “source of truth” by which to evaluate driver behavior and identify potential safety risks. To ensure effective fleet safety management, it’s crucial to establish a clear and unified set of safety standards and performance metrics across the entire fleet. A comprehensive view of safety incidents is an absolute necessity for measuring and evaluating safety performance. Beyond an overview, the system must also enable drilldown for easy analysis of the behavior of individual departments, locations and drivers when needed. This empowers managers to become proactive, optimize fleet performance, identify potential risks and prevent dangerous incidents.

SUMMING IT UP

1

Collect all data into a single platform

2

Provide a clear view of all the data

3

Analyze safety incidents and challenging trends

4

Enable drill-down into safety issues

5

Create action plan to improve driver safety

“Over the course of 18 months after beginning to deploy the solution, we saw a staggering change in the way our employees were driving. All they had to do was to plug in the destination and focus on the driving: the technology did everything else.” - Jim Andrews, VP for Health, Safety and Environment, SLB (schlumberger)

SLB (Schlumberger) SUMMING IT UP CHALLENGE SLB (Schlumberger) had been sending new hires to driving centers to teach them safety and operational best-practices. During this process, the company collected terabytes of data that sat in a database and could not be analyzed without a significant investment. Jim Andrews, SLB’s VP for Health, Safety and Environment, sought a single solution that would enable more effective leverage of the data, both for driver safety and optimization of routing, resource allocation and other operations.

SOLUTION SLB rolled out the Drive Safe Drive™ app across its fleet for thousands of employees and contractors in 70+ countries over the course of 12 months. SLB provided its employees with an optional app for personal protection, which was embraced by over 10,000 employees. Once drivers installed the GreenRoad Drive™ app, they received real-time coaching and safety advice, along with location-based alerts. This also enabled SLB to monitor employee driving behavior, resulting in significant reductions in risk that saved lives and reduced costs.

Best Practice #2

Real-time Safety Management Implementing the right framework with real-time alerts and coaching enhances safety and reduces safety incidents. Improving driver behavior is the key to reducing accidents and fleet risk. With human error causing almost 94% of accidents, fleet management solutions must be driver-focused and prioritize driver awareness.

Key tools in implementing a driver-focused approach:

Real-TimeDriverCoaching

Case study: DULSCO Robust Digestible Data

Predictive Safety

With immediate alerts like “Watch your speed!” or “Harsh braking,” drivers can self-correct and avoid potential incidents. Continuous coaching over time enhances driving habits, ultimately resulting in safer driving practices and fewer risky maneuvers.

Using predictive AI to analyze granular driver behavior data, managers can detect risky driving patterns early on and provide targeted training and intervention. The more accurate the data, the more precise the insights, making predictive AI an essential tool for effective fleet safety management.

Case study: Northern Gas Networks (NGN)

Digital Driver Safety Solution in Action The Drive Safe Approach

Real-Time Alerts

Drive Safe Fully Digital Product Suite

Real-Time Monitoring and Tracking

Alerts based on location or context enable mangers to notify on potentially hazardous situations, enabling drivers to take action, and improve efficiency, prevent accidents and reduce risk.

Real-time location data is invaluable for efficient allocation of resources and effective handling of emergency situations. Such information, coupled with real-time alerts, enhances a fleet’s preventative approach, resulting in optimized operations and increased efficiency.

Driver Buy-in and Engagement Your solution should make drivers and managers partners in pursuing the same goal - getting everyone home safely, day after day. Drivers play a crucial role in ensuring the success of any fleet safety program. Without their cooperation and engagement, even the most innovative and accurate fleet safety systems will be ineffective. When drivers feel valued and are invested in the safety program, employers can increase engagement and improve overall fleet safety.

Key practices for driver buy-in:

Accuracy and transparency

Privacy

Gamification:

Employers must communicate effectively about how the safety system will benefit drivers and demonstrate its accuracy in detecting dangerous behavior.

Workers must feel confident that their personal data is secure, that the system complies with privacy regulations, and that only necessary fleet safety information is collected.

Recognition and awards can be highly effective for incentivizing drivers to improve their driving habits. Safety score and healthy competition between employees.

How? Continuous communication Proof through pilots Listening to employee input Appointing employee ambassadors

Best Practice #4

Robust Digestible Data Don’t work for your data: let it work for you. To be most effective, fleet safety management systems should be able to identify not only high-risk maneuvers (i.e. harsh braking and quick-start accelerations), but also subtle, moderate-risk errors.

Fleet Safety Management System Needs

Drivers

Managers

Why? Because these lower risk maneuvers can quickly escalate into dangerous situations. By providing real-time alerts for such maneuvers, drivers can adjust their driving habits before it’s too late.

Enable a self-coaching approach to improve driving safety

Smother driving has significant operational benefits, including reduced fuel consumption, extended battery charge range, and reduced tire wear.

Clear interface showing safety scores, driving trends, and recent risky events

To ensure an effective fleet safety system, it’s crucial to evaluate the quality of the collected data. The system should be able to provide clear, comprehensive data in a simple and compelling way.

Display in local language

Automatic notifications about high risk drivers and locations

Straightforward information with actionable guidance and insights

Complete integration with the rest of your tech stack

Straightforward interface to show trends and KPIs, as well as drill-down advanced analysis Live tracking
