Letter from the Founder Technology is changing the world and if you don’t change your marketing strategies, you may find your business losing valuable market space. The traditional methods of marketing are evaporating and all of today’s healthy businesses have turned to social media as a primary means to reach consumers. Print is dead social media networks allow businesses to share content, videos, and images with interactive experiences that are virtually unrestricted – no other marketing campaign can match what social media can offer. The best part about social media is that it is free – free and effective – the perfect combination to minimize expenses and maximize profit. There is no need to spend thousands of dollars on marketing through outdated means such as print when there are viable opportunities to reach a much larger audience for free. Social media also allows businesses to directly market to target audiences. This is perhaps the ultimate advantage to Social media networking. Such outlets allow businesses and individuals to willfully search for targeted locations, profiles, hobbies, occupations, interests, etc. Therefore, as a business owner you can directly reach potential consumers that have a direct interest in your brand, product or service. No need wasting time or money inadvertently marketing to uninterested consumers with expensive mass marketing campaigns. Focus directly on potential customers who may benefit from your brand, service or product through social media. Visit my blog for more social media tips: WWW.THEVIRTUAL-LIFE.COM

This winter has be rough on all of us – no matter where you live (hello, snow storm in ATLANTA?!!?). If you’re anything like me, you’re anxiously awaiting the days where you will awaken listening to birds chirping and not snow blowers working. The transition from winter to fall isn’t always an easy one. It can be hard to know what items to pack away (or give away) and which to keep out for just a little while longer. As you prepare to give your snow boots a rest and break out the sandals, follow these simple tips to help make your wardrobe transition as smooth as possible. Edit Your Closet – Donate, Keep, or Toss Twice a year I conduct a closet edit to critically assess my wardrobe. The key is to actually be critical about what it is that you own. We’ve all heard that you should set-up three piles – donate, keep, and toss – and I’m not here to tell you any differently. I’m simply going to give you all my best tips for editing your closet. Go through each item one by one (which is sure to be a pain if you have a ton of clothes like me). If you absolutely MUST have it because it’s your favorite “thing,” always garners lots of compliments and attention, or makes you feel fabulous every time you wear it, that item is obviously a keeper. That’s the easy part. For items to toss and/or donate it will be a little tougher. First, start with all of the clothes that you didn’t wear for the entire preceding seasons (i.e. spring/summer or fall/winter). If you haven’t pulled it out of your closet to wear in the last 6 months, you don’t need it. If it’s in good condition or requires only minor repairs, like a new button, put it in the donate pile. If it’s in poor condition, has a permanent stain, or is just plain ugly then go ahead and toss it. These two processes should take care of about 70% of your closet. For the last few items you simply aren’t sure of have a friend give you an honest opinion about how you look in the pieces. If you look good and just forget that you own it, move it to the front of your closet and give it one more shot. But, if it’s unflattering or out of style, let it go. Layer it On When you are transitioning from winter to spring feel free to put your bulkiest sweaters away. This transition time is the perfect opportunity to get your layering on. Plus, layering is always more flattering when you use less bulky items. Remember, the goal is warmth, not bulk. Break out your camisoles, t-shirts, cardigans, and scarves to create comfortable and warm looks in between the seasons. Color is King Add pretty spring colors to your winter wardrobe while you’re transitioning. Teal looks great with chocolate or burnt orange, bright pink looks beautiful with purple and cobalt blue, yellow is a great partner for grey, and Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid, looks good with just about anything! Add vibrant colors in your accessories such as handbags, scarves, and jewelry for a look that easily flows between seasons. Mix and Match Mixing and matching isn’t just for patterns anymore; it’s also for fabrics and textures. Pair a luxe winter fabric, like brocade, with something light and airy, like chiffon. Or pair your favorite high-low spring skirt with a sweater, tights, and boots. My favorite thing to do is put a turtleneck under my spring and summer dresses. It’s ultra-pretty and totally unexpected. Experiment, experiment, experiment! Sweat it Out I am happy to report that embellished sweatshirts are still everywhere! Grab one with lace, rhinestones, or sequins and pair it with your favorite jeans. Tuck a turtleneck under it in the winter and swap that out for a tee in the spring time. The sweatshirt will keep you warm and stylish, no matter what the weather is doing outside. Avoid a Hairy Situation An easy switch to transition between seasons is to switch up your hair style or color. Head to the salon and add some highlights, lowlights, or a new color to officially let the world know you are over winter! Or, if you’re brave grab a DIY box and do it at home! The Eyes Have It Finally, trade in your deep make-up shades (no ladies , I’m not ready to give up my wine, cherry, and burgundy lips either) for lighter colors. Opt for bright hues and shimmery tones. Even if you’re wearing your winter’s finest, simply changing your lipstick will change everything about your outfit. Follow these simple tips and your transition from winter to spring is sure to be a (warm) breeze! Visit www.bourgeoisiemag.com

WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL FILM & ARTS FESTIVAL 2014
The Women’s International Film & Arts Festival (WIFF) is a unique, cultural event featuring films, visual and performance arts and other artistic expressions by women. It is one of only two festivals in the Southeastern United States specifically dedicated to women. Held annually during Women’s History month, the event is designed to celebrate women and to help them realize their dreams, visions, and voices. The events bring together women from all over the world to explore, share and dialogue about issues concerning women through arts. We believe the images of women on film directly effect how women are perceived, valued and treated in society. The overarching mission of WIFF is to become the premiere film festival in the world for women to network, screen their films, and recognize the brilliance and accomplishments of women throughout the globe. With women representing only 7% of film directors, every effort should be made to enhance the opportunity for women’s voices to be heard, and to present a wider range of roles and identify choices for women. Designed to promote women in the film industry and celebrate women’s accomplishments, the festival consists of panel discussions, workshops, and symposia. WIFF’s goals include empowering women of all ages to see themselves in a broader context. This year we highlighted 60 films from all around the world. From Turkey, Israel, Mexico, Venezuela and many more.

Physical Therapy Service In A Sports Training Facility By Advance Physical Therapy Network – Baron Tang, PT, DPT, FMS, SFMA
Physical therapists have a wide scope of practice which can benefit members of a gym greatly and this is especially so in specific training facilities. The more you push yourself to improve, the more you risk hurting yourself. It isn’t anyone’s fault. The fact of the matter is that when we push past our limits in the effort of properly graded exercise, breakdowns in form (which are typically difficult or unable to be coached through because of fatigue) occur at which point, the risk of injury will subsequently rise. This point of breakdown is actually a necessity in improving oneself. It is the concept of reaching volitional fatigue, when our muscles actually maximize the gains that
36 | APRIL/MAY 2014
they can make and benefits begin to carry over. We all have weaknesses and asymmetries which, under most circumstances, aren’t challenged enough to cause any problems. Reaching one’s goals usually entails gracing the axis of reaching volitional fatigue without injury. This point is where weaknesses become more important than strengths and can work against a gym member. These weaknesses also play a role in the point of diminishing returns within a gym. Everyone is familiar with the point in an exercise regimen weeks or months down the line where your gains hit a wall; Visit www.bourgeoisiemag.com
you reach a plateau. Another advantage of having physical therapy in a gym/training facility is to help athletes or members break through their plateaus. An example would be a recreational runner who can easily run 3 miles with no problems but then decides to run an extra mile and immediately comes home with a new ache/pain/dysfunction. We are only as strong as our weakest links and a therapist with a well trained eye can help you find those links and correct them in the presence of pain. Once corrected, the member may continue ramping up their routines again with less fear of re-injury. In addition to these “wear and tear injuries, athletes cannot avoid regular bumps and bruises from their respective sports either. A therapist on-site can help with the triage associated with various injuries that athletes or gym members may incur. In addition, Doctors of Physical Therapy are also trained in being able to assist members in making decisions on next steps, regardless of whether or not therapy is warranted. These all add a much value to a gym membership when members can feel that there is a safety net in the form of medicine's movement specialists on-site. By utilizing a comprehensive evaluation of the neuromusculoskeletal dynamics, and because of the advantageous proximity of practicing physical therapy along side personal trainers, rapidly addressing these movement dysfunction helps most individuals return to their desired level of activity much more rapidly. This provides extra value to members because it helps to mitigate the sometimes slow and often expensive process of seeing their primary care physician, seeing a specialist, performing medical tests such as X-rays, then going back to finally get therapy anyway.

6 Ways to Seize Nighttime Eating
In my practice a lot of people come to me wanting to lose weight. Many of them have no problem changing their eating habits during the day, but something changes soon after dinner ends. There are many reasons why people over eat at night. See below for some tips to help kick this bad habit! 1. Make sure you are eating enough during the day. At least 3 meals a day, plus healthy snacks between meals if you are going more than 3 hours without eating. 2. If you have a craving at night, eat something with protein, along with a healthy snack like kale chips, then wait 15 minutes. Many times your craving will pass. Having a treat after dinner maybe a reasonable option depending on what you are eating and the portion size. Some of the healthiest deserts I often suggest are "Paleo" or "Raw Vegan" recipes or products. Take a look at serving sizes and carbohydrates. Remember, 15g of carbohydrates is considered one serving. 3. Know what type of eater you are. Do you have better control of your eating if you stay away from a food completely, or if you know what quantity is allowed, and stick with that. Some individuals can't control themselves once they start eating certain foods, while others are the total opposite and will never stick with something if they have to avoid it entirely. Know if you need to get off of certain foods "cold turkey", or if you feel better with the idea of "everything in moderation". 4. Many times nighttime eating is associated with comfort eating. Pamper yourself in other ways! Take a relaxing bath with mineral salts, Braggs raw apple cider vinegar, and/or essential oils. Get a massage, listen to relaxing music, light candles, go for a walk, or read a good book. 5. Many times nighttime eating is associated with emotional eating. It is important to address your stress. Read Unlearning Stress by James Rohr, listen to self help pod casts, or watch an inspirational or empowering video. There is a pod cast specifically on overcoming overeating with "weight loss guru X Pete, and Zoe Harcombe. A new great resource is www.intherooms.com which allows you to go to a meeting similar to overeaters anonymous in the privacy of your own home. You can listen, get support, or share via video conferencing. Most importantly, use this extra time at night to focus on you, instead of escaping! 6. Many people develop eating patterns around doing certain types of activities. If you always eat when you watch television, you may want to watch less television. Try and go to bed earlier, or eat dinner later. Try substituting your trigger eating activity with one of the other activities suggested in this article, or come up with your own.

TALK STOOP!

nother sleepless night in the wee hours of the morning channel surfing with my handy remote control. As I continue flipping from one boring infomercial to another, I stumble across a young, quirky entertainment host interviewing one of my favorite NBA basketball players, Amare Stoudemire. It’s approximately 5:37am; I immediately become drawn to her interview. The early morning show happens to be Talk Stoop with Cat Greenleaf.

Cat is conducting an interview of several athletes on what appears to be a brownstone in New York City. With her bulldog by her side, the spunky talk show host slowly sips on coffee while asking Amare a myriad of sharp and spontaneous questions pertaining to his tattoos, basketball career, and life in general. Her infectious charm and witty humor become an instant hit with me. I subsequently began recording additional shows and watched other episodes with famous actors like Kimora Lee Simmons, Hilary Swank, Justin Bartha (The Hangover series), and veteran Andy Garcia. Cat began her television career in San Francisco as an airborne traffic reporter. As a native New Yorker, it was an unusual fit, particularly living on the West Coast, but the opportunity led to an opening at RNN TV back in Queens. Following that brief stint, Cat followed her passion for television by being a feature reporter on Today in New York for WNBC during the 11 O'clock News. New Yorkers took instant notice of her witty humor and quirky style of interviewing as she gained popularity on shows like the Weekend Today Show and the New York Non-Stop channel. Following the birth of her son Primo, Cat was given the ultimate platform for a talk show. In 2009, Cat began her two-time Emmy Award program, Talk Stoop with Cat Greenleaf. The 30 minute show features interviews with celebrities while sipping coffee from the footsteps of her home. Talk Stoop with Cat Greenleaf can be seen by 12 million viewers in over nine major television markets in the U.S. She has interviewed everyone from famous athletes to rappers and famous actors.

Bourgeoisie Magazine has had the privilege of interviewing the burgeoning talk show starlet: 1. Tell us about your background, where are you from? I’m originally from Westchester, NY – a suburb of the city. I went to high school in California, so my LA friends say I’m a West Coaster, my NY friends claim me as an East Coast girl. I maintain the latter! 2. What school did you attend? I began with two years at Boston University, had my heart broken, went to study in India and then Brazil through Friends World College. It was my own Eat, Pray, Love journey before it was cool! 3. What were you like in college? The first two years I was a bartender then a DJ, so if nothing else, I might’ve been a fun friend to have. I got pretty serious when I hit the road. 4. What inspired you to become journalist?
a
I saw the film, The Insider, with Al Pacino and that was it. I got bit. 5. Who do you look to in life? Who's your hero? My husband – he’s so smart. My sons’ birthmothers – they’re beyond graceful and selfless. My sons – they’re joyful and brilliant and wry. 6. What gave you the idea to create Talk Stoop on your very own stoop? I didn’t really create anything new – I just took a daily occurrence and added the camera. Visit www.bourgeoisiemag.com
7. Of all the interviews with actors and actresses, who was the most interesting? My mom. 8. What actor or actress was the most fun? Sir Ian McKellan was a dream interview. I could’ve listened to him forever. On the other hand, Orlando Bloom was incredibly charming – I’d be happy just staring at him no matter what he was saying! But Edie Falco had the whole package – intrigue, brilliance, honesty, showmanship. Show-woman-ship?! 9. You had an interview with Actress, Nia Long. You asked her if she could be any super hero, who would it be? If you could be any super hero, who would it be? Nelson Mandela. 10. Your show has won 2 Emmy's, what did it feel like to win?
The first 20 minutes of each year were awesome – I got to honor my team of cameramen and editors up on stage with me, then the phone calls started pouring in from family and friends who heard the news, so I felt like a star. But the glory dried up quickly when I realized that, even with 2 Emmys under my belt, they still didn’t stack up size-wise to the one my husband got for an investigative piece he had on CBS. His big Emmy literally looks like it gave birth to my twin little Emmys! I guess his category brings in bigger statues than mine, but it’s ok – I’m nominated again this year, and If I win, I’ll smelt them all together and begin to gloat!

11. What do you find most challenging, being a mother, or a celebrity?
14. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
A MOM. In caps! A MOM! Every moment as a mother is satisfying and heart breaking and the best and the worst all at once. No one tells you that before you have kids because there are no words to accurately describe the ride.
5 years older - though you’ll never be able to tell thanks to really good skin care - with a show that’s 5 times bigger & hopefully shot in warmer winter locations, sons that are 5 years happier and even more fun, and a marriage that’s 5 years stronger and sexier!
12. What do you like to do in your spare time? I don’t have any! But I’d give anything for a few hours to read a book, hike the mountains behind our cabin, and chew on my children (that one I do every day – maybe that’s why I have no time left!) 13. What are your plans for the future of Talk Stoop and USA DAYTIME? I’m so grateful for how much we get to do with the show now, and I’m thrilled to keep growing the platform. I’d also like to work on a live element – either as part of what we already do, or something new. I’ve often joked about doing a night-time live show, Talk Stoop After Dark. Here’s to making the joke into a reality! 48 | APRIL/MAY 2014

Yeelen Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of large format works by Tim Okamura, Jerome Soimaud, and T. Eliott Mansa. The subject of Figuration is approached as an enduring subject and a social vehicle for the evolution of human consciousness. The exhibition highlights the resurgence of Black Figuration in contemporary art practice. The portrayal of the Black figure has always been a subject of debate; who is allowed to depict it, in what form must it take, and how prolific should its impact be. Resurgence places Blackness at the forefront, the strength of the subjects speaks to the core of the human spirit. The endurance and drive to be recognized among the mainstream, no longer only a jewel of an underground movement- Blackness has stepped out of the shadows and into the forefront of contemporary art dialogue. The artists exhibiting are storytellers, messengers of their subjects’ histoires. The large scale works of oils, and mixed media are deeply rooted in figuration, realistic, yet impregnated with symbolism that speaks to our collective psychology. .
Tim Okamura (1968) is a contemporary Canadian painter known for his depiction of African-American and minority subjects in urban settings, and his combination of graffiti and realism. His work has been featured in several major motion pictures and in London's National Portrait Gallery. Jerome Soimaud (1964) is a French, Miamibased contemporary artist known for his exacting depictions and perspective challenging compositions; his skills were honed at La Grande Chaumiere in Paris. The artist is able to accurately seize his subject before reducing them to lines or ether. Soimaud’s works are in private and public collections worldwide. T. Eliott Mansa (1977) Miami’s native son, currently an MFA student at Yale University and alumni of the New World School of the Arts. Mansa came up during the era of Reaganomics, crack cocaine, and the sounds of Black nationalist hip-hop, the artist has strived to make sense of the disparate elements of his environment. His poignant portrait speaks to humanity and the inner struggles faced by his subjects on their journey for selftruth. Yeelen Gallery is a contemporary art space dedicated to the promotion and expression of Street Culture. Occupying a 10,000 squarefoot converted industrial space in Little Haiti, allows the Gallery to mount exhibitions of a dynamic and ambitious nature. Yeelen Gallery maintains a focus on figuration, realism, and symbolism. For additional information and photographic material, please contact the gallery at info@yeelenart.com (954) 235 4758.

EDITOR’S PICK Hold Me in Contempt: A Romance By Wendy Williams Move over 50 Shades, there’s a new romance in town. Superstar Wendy Williams brings on the heat in her first ever, no-holds-barred, down and dirty, romance novel. Kimberly Kind is trying to get beyond her roots. A successful, beautiful, smart lawyer, she’s finally finding direction in her life and getting out of the streets. But a terrible accident threatens to throw her carefully laid plans off course. Now Kim’s hiding a huge secret… one that could threaten everything. Enter King. A perfect mix of Justin Timberlake and David Beckham, the man oozes sex and has more swagger than anyone Kim’s ever met. Their chemistry is off the charts. But after passion-filled nights, the intensity of their emotions takes both of them by surprise. Love was not supposed to be an option. Now it’s the only thing holding them together. When their pasts come back with a vengeance, can love possibly be enough?
Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling Rosie Perez first caught our attention with her fierce dance in the title sequence of Do the Right Thing and has since defined herself as a funny and talented actress who broke boundaries for Latinas in the film industry. What most people would be surprised to learn is that the woman with the big, effervescent personality has a secret straight out of a Dickens novel. At the age of three, Rosie’s life was turned upside down when her mentally ill mother tore her away from the only family she knew and placed her in a Catholic children’s home in New York’s Westchester County. .
Divergent By Veronica Roth In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her. Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the YA scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.
Thus began her crazily discombobulated childhood of being shuttled between “the Home,” where she and other kids suffered all manners of cruelty from nuns, and various relatives’ apartments in Brooklyn. More than a page-turning read, Handbook for an Unpredictable Life is a story of survival. By turns heartbreaking and funny, it is ultimately the inspirational story of a woman who has found a hard-won place of strength and peace.
