South Florida's
alerie Tyson (born and raised in Hollywood, Florida) has been in the entertainment I ndustry for over 30 years. She has had a fascinating road leading to her success as a solo artist and entertainer, a path that has made her not only a more experienced singer, but also given her the chance to constantly work on and improve her vocal skills in a variety of genres. Valerie's musical abilities were recognised from very early on in her life. During her childhood, her growing interest and talent in music was given a chance to flourish and develop in a variety of school plays, talent shows and musicals. In middle school, one of her musical mentors, June Capezza, introduced her to the world of opera, classical music, as well as many artists in the pop genre, including Barbara Streisand; Valerie was inspired and fascinated with the different vocal styles and sounds that she was introduced to. During her high-school years, Valerie continued to get involved in numerous local and state singing competitions, both as a solo artist and as a part of various chorus ensembles. In her last year of high-school, she worked at the Forge Lounge with “The Life Band” as a substitute for another amazingly talented singer and performer, Miss Deedee Wilde, whom it was a great honor for Valerie to substitute. After high-school, Valerie became a part of the group “Unit Three.” As a group, they performed at various clubs, concert halls, gala balls, bar mitzvahs, as well as many sorority and fraternity balls, among many other social/entertainment-related events. The group became highly sought after and attracted the interest of fans and musicians/artists alike; they opened shows for Johnnie Taylor, S.O.S Band, The Bar Keys, and David Hudson, among many others. After opening for Jimmie “Bo” Home, Valerie was presented with the chance to become a travelling musician and a background vocalist for him – she was thrilled and jumped at the opportunity. After leaving “Unit Three”, Valerie played with several other South Florida bands, such as Cosmic Truth, Kickin, I.C.Y, Style, After Midnight, and E.J. and Company. In 1988, Valerie decided to put together her own band, with which she toured and performed both nationally and internationally; together they opened shows for Al Green, Janet Jackson, New Edition, Spyro Gyro, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

Valerie doesn't limit herself to only one style of music; upon hearing the song “Once you get started” by Rufus and Chaka Khan, Valerie became hooked to R&B music and added it to her large repertoire of vocal styles. In 1992, she was crowned “The Pace R&B Showcase Winner” with her then band O.T.G (which included herself, Sal Oristano, LLOYD Tucker, and Mitch Goldstein) with which she played all over Florida and developed a huge fan base.
During her time touring with O.T.G, she met George Tandy, a fellow Pace winner in the Jazz Category. Years after their meeting, Valerie and George worked together in George's band at “Mangos”, where they played every Sunday and Monday night for twelve consecutive years. Valerie was overjoyed by this opportunity and savoured each moment; she was able to combine her love for both jazz and R&B, all in one place – she couldn't have asked for a better project. Valerie takes inspiration from artists in a variety of genres. When asked which top three musicians she would love to collaborate with, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams made the list! Her top musical influences include Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, John Coltrane, Dionne Warwick, Billy Holiday, The Staple Singers, James Brown, The Music of Motown, and, last but definitely not least, the one and only Gladys Knight, who Valerie has an immense amount of respect and appreciation for, not only as a singer, but as a person and what she stands for. She is a huge fan of the timeless classics of soul music and continues to perform them in her shows and concerts. She has been quoted saying, “I know I'm standing on the shoulders of many, many entertainers that came before me and because of my love and passion for soul music, I have always felt a strong need to keep the legacy of soul music going.” Valerie has always had big dreams, one of which is being able to perform on a Broadway stage and at the MET. When asked in an interview what it felt like to perform in front of an audience, Valerie described it as a spiritual experience; she feels truly blessed “with the ability to move everyone's emotions.” She has described her voice as a “gift from God” and even though as a child she never sang at her church, she has always felt that there was something spiritual about singing. Apart from being a fan of some of the legends in the classical soul genre. She recently completed her EP "Here I Am", and this is her very first project of original music. Valerie will be having a launch party, live performance and video shoot for the EP and her new website iamvalerietyson.com, the event will be held at The Hard Rock Hotel in July. One thing's for certain, Valerie has some exciting times ahead and her fans couldn't be more pleased! By Julia Smalls

Ariel Swedroe is an ambitious, young entrepreneur with a passion for art and fashion; she is the founder of “Swedroe: art to wear by Ariel.” Being 11 years old does not hold her back from working on the ideas she cares most about, in fact her age combined with her talent adds a unique freshness and new perspective to her clothing line. Ariel's line is inspired by the works of her well-renowned architect and artist grandfather, Robert Swedroe (with whom she shares a strong bond that is accentuated by their love and appreciation of art). Even at the age of 8, Ariel was fascinated with fashion and showed a keen interest in styling and design; she enrolled in an independent fashion and sewing program founded by Angie Cohen, Design Lab Miami. It was after her meeting with Stella McCartney at her grandfather's house that Ariel knew for certain that she wanted to start on her fashion line immediately, and with the help of her mentor, Angie Cohen, she set to work on “Swedroe: art to wear by Ariel.”
Moved by her grandfather's awe-inspiring 3D collages, Ariel had often thought of how lovely it would be to have clothes with the same patterns, colours and textures as his work. Ariel is not one to dream aimlessly and think about the what-ifs and the what-might-have-beens of her ideas; she put her pen to paper and after a long process of artistic design, came up with various clothing items; she made these from silky fabrics with her grandfather's designs laser-printed onto them. Her hard work and determination astounded her family, friends, and all those who were witness to her amazing artistic process, and were awe-struck at the beauty of the results. Ariel's creative, business savvy, yet unpretentious personality has helped in making her dreams materialize. Using some of her grandfather's most iconic designs for chic, cutting-edge fashion made from silky fabric, she has created a stunning line of clothes for both young girls and women. Her designs have already wowed many audiences, including one at the exclusive Art Basel VIP event at the Perez Art Museum in Miami. It's her dream to continue designing, and to share her's, as well as her grandfather's, art and talent with everyone! http://www.swedroebyariel.com/

Jalen Malik Yearwood is a 15 year old 9 th grader with a passion for video games and flying drones; it is also his dream to join the Marines to serve his country after he graduates. His intelligence and creativity have served him well in many of his goals and passions, including fashion! He had always been interested in fashion and had very often been commended for his stylish combinations and outfits. However, it wasn't until the beginning of 2015, when his mother decided it was time for him and his sister to get some more productive hobbies, that he took a more serious interest in fashion and considered pursuing his talents further. During the development of his newly found hobby, Jalen discovered that his natural instincts in fashion served him well in his creation of bucket hats for his friends – this would eventually lead to the start of Jalen's own fashion line: MTG (Malik the Geek)! He wanted to be able to share his designs not only with his family and friends, but with everyone else too; creating his own fashion line was a great way to do this. Jalen now creates urban clothing for both teens and adults, from cut dresses to joggers. MTG (Malik the Geek) will be showcasing for the first time in the Equilibrium fashion show, in Miami Springs on the 11 st of April 2015. Jalen's line is truly unique and reflects his outgoing personality and eye catching style.

Deja is a fashion designer and founder of the brand “Esoteric: Meant for kids with style” - she's also an 11 year old 6th grader! She's always been an overachiever in school and has big dreams for her high school and college years, as well as her future – she wants to become a doctor. How does an intelligent young doctor-to-be become involved in fashion, you ask? Simple, at the start of 2015, her mother made the decision for Deja and her brother to cut down on their time on the computer and television – it was time for the kids to get some hobbies. Deja had always had her own sense of style and often experimented with different combinations of designs, patterns and fabrics, so naturally, when it was time to pick a hobby, none suited her better than designing clothes. Deja set to work designing various experimental, original and creative items, for example hair bows made from plastic spoons, clutch purses made out of placemats, etc., and experimenting with different materials, textures and fabrics – her creativity knew no bounds. It wasn't long before Deja's family and friends began noticing many of her original, eye-catching designs and asking where they too could get their hands on these gorgeous items; Deja was always showered with praise when she revealed the items were of her own making. She soon began receiving requests for her work, and that was when Deja decided her hobby could be turned into something much more, something that she could share with everyone, not just her friends and family.
When searching for guidance on how to proceed with her inspirations, Deja could think of no one better to consult than her mother, a successful entrepreneur herself, who could provide her with the knowledge of the business side of the fashion industry, connect her to experts in the field, and ensure Deja was allowed to flourish and develop her talents in a safe, positive and age appropriate environment. Deja has developed her own style and this shows in her fashion line. Underneath the creative, intelligent, artist, is an 11 year old girl, and her line reflects this – the bright color's seen throughout the line were inspired by her favourite cartoon and movie characters, from Sponge Bob to Phineas and Ferb, as well as various characters from the films Frozen (2013) and Home (2015). Since starting up her brand, Deja has created beautiful dresses, gorgeous tutus, original hats, along with many other items, ranging from sizes 3T (three year old) to size 2. She will be showcasing her fabulous designs for the very first time in the Equilibrium fashion show in Miami Springs on the 11th of April 2015. She's created a fantastic new line for kids; everyone will be able to find something they like, especially kids with style!

Art is my life and designing clothes is what I enjoy spending my time and energy on. For me designing clothes is not just practical but spiritual in nature. I can take my thoughts and ideas and put them into form by using the mind and the body. It's a certain ability to take thoughts that are projected on the mental plane and give birth to them on the material plane. It's a combination of space, time, energy and matter. They are little bits and parts of me put into many forms. It's like I just want to find a good home for them, as if I were selling a puppy. But nothing compares to the satisfaction of seeing a client feeling special in something that was once just a thought in my head. For me it's a deep connection between designer and client. Here at Siammose we like to honor and celebrate the female figure with designs and fabric that magically flow off the body or tight fitted garments that show off and accentuate the curves. Each item is created as carefully as possible and very exclusive, only available at Siammose. Much time is taken to craft the item by machine and also by hand. You will notice and feel a tremendous difference from one of our items compared to the ones bought from big retail stores which are produced by factory seamstresses pushed to meet their quota. Some of the designs we offer have never been done before anywhere else and will be featured at some runway events this FW 2015. Our goal is for you to find yourself in one of our unique and special pieces and to show off your inner personality! We want you to have all eyes on you when you walk into that room. Make a statement in a Siammose skirt! This is just the beginning for us and we hope to grow and expand through 2015 creating pieces that will make you own the spotlight .
