The spring semester is always a time of renewal. Santa Fe transitions from snow and cold to flowers poking up through the ground. The trees move from barren branches to buds and finally leaves and we daydream of the coming summer. During this time of growth, the continuing education office experiences its busiest season. It seems everyone, like the change of seasons, wants to renew an old skill, grow in a new direction or even branch out into new territory. So join us this season; learn children’s book illustration with Julia Cairns; sharpen your business acumen in Coaching for Business Owners or Enhancing Leadership Skills with Pamela Fischer; or re-live the Civil War on a field trip to Pecos National Monument with Peter Sinclaire. As the region begins to warm up, we look forward to seeing you at SFCC!

IYENGAR YOGA Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone – even the elderly, sick, and disabled, to practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail, and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. HISTORY ON HORSEBACK
GEOLOGY OF LA CIENEGA
Join historian and weekly newspaper columnist Marc Simmons for an informative talk about the lore and legends of the Cerrillos Hills. After the talk, ride on horseback into the wilderness and retrace the steps of history with a member of the Cerrillos Hills Historic Park staff. Novice riders will enjoy the smooth-riding Tennessee Walkers and Missouri Fox Trotters. Students must weigh less than 210 pounds and provide height and weight information at registration to be matched with an appropriate horse. Enrollment is limited.
Join local geologist, Kirt Kempter, for a full-day geologic exploration of the La Cienega area south of Santa Fe. A two-mile, moderately strenuous hike to the top of Cerro Seguro (350 foot elevation gain) provides a spectacular view of the canyon carved by the Santa Fe river. The rocks in the La Cienega area tell of volcanoes both ancient and young, plus the rise of the nearby Sangre de Cristo mountains. Learn about the local hydrology and why many natural springs occur in the area. Hiking poles are recommended.
