IYENGAR YOGA Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone – even the elderly, sick, and disabled, to practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail, and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. Travel near or far for a wonderful exploration of the Southwest. We also teach about the region in a classroom, where we look at ancient and contemporary cultures.

HIKING ANTIQUITY, MESA PRIETA PETROGLYPH SITE This is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and historic images from Spanish settlers. Students are asked to make a $25 donation toward the upkeep of the petroglyph area. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., May 6, 1 day. Course #SW367 0/CRN 31602 Martha Yates, Fee $85

ECOLOGY OF THE SANTA FE MOUNTAINS Within a short distance of the Plaza lies a great variety of habitats and plant communities. In this mostly downhill hike of 7.5 miles, we examine vegetation gradients, the evolution of ecosystems, the interplay between geography and climate, microclimates, and how individual flora and fauna have adapted to various environmental conditions. Geologic processes, animal tracks, and plant and bird identification illustrate the details of the various habitats visited. Participants arrange for their own transportation. Saturday, 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. May 13, 1 day. Course #SW307 01/CRN 30723 William Neuwirth, Fee $79

ANIMAL TRACKING Learn more about those animal tracks you’ve noticed on your walks or hikes. This class covers tracking techniques, perceptual widening, different track patterns, scale and animal gaits, rates of track deterioration, clues to animal behavior and animal interaction with the landscape. Students must provide their own transportation. An itinerary is provided after registration. Class size is small to allow for more personal attention, so early registration is encouraged. Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 29, 1 day. Course #SW313 01/CRN 30721 William Neuwirth, Fee $75

NEW! COURAGEOUS APACHE WOMEN OF THE LATE 19TH CENTURY

The Ojito Wilderness Area is a unique geologic landscape within an hour’s drive from both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. On this journey you will explore on foot the spectacular San Ysidro anticline, where Mesozoic rock layers have been folded into a dome structure, the core of which has been breached by erosion, exposing a variety of tilted, colorful rocks. A circular hike of approximately 4 miles takes you into the anticline and back along its eastern edge. The elevation gain/loss on the hike is approximately 500 feet.

The Apache (Chiricahua-Chihere) women of the Apache War era are relatively unknown, although some of their male counterparts are well known, e.g. Geronimo. Tales about six Apache women will be told in this course. Their stories should be as well-known as Pocahontas or Sacajawea. The women covered (Lozen, Goldon, Dahtester, Huere, Siki Tochani and Gouyer) are fascinating and much braver by far than the stories you might be familiar with.
