Continuing Education art classes are designed for creative people of all levels. Whether you are a beginning or more advanced artist, Continuing Education has a class for you. While our classes are taught by professional, working artists, none of our courses offers credit toward a degree. Expand your understanding of form and volume and as you start drawing beautiful botanical forms. First, discover useful exercises in pencil and then add basic watercolor washes. Life-Drawing Studio This class is for those with some nude-figure drawing experience who are ready to move to the next level. After a series of brief warm-up gestures, the model maintains one long pose for the duration of the session, giving you time to develop your drawings and focus on aspects of the figure that give you trouble. Short slide presentations are part of the course. Personalized critiques focus on accuracy of gesture, proportion and artistic anatomy. Course #AT314 01/CRN 10704 Kevin Gorges, Fee $145 Canyon Colors: The Pastel Landscape at Ghost Ranch Join master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. On Friday evening, the class will meet in the college studios, where the instructor will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel techniques. On Saturday, the class will meet in Abiquiu. You will create expressive pastel paintings of these canyons and mesas. Please note, there is a $10 entry fee to Ghost Ranch, not included in the course fee. Encaustic Painting

This course is for beginning artists interested in working with acrylic paints and mediums. Experienced artists interested in adding acrylic to their repertoire of major media will also find this course useful. Structured assignments and demonstrations will help you to explore the use of liquid mediums, solid gels and opaque pastes. Color mixing, composition and surface preparation will be covered. Encaustic painting is painting with wax and dates back into antiquity. Students will learn how to make gesso and their own wax colors instead of buying expensive supplies from art supply stores. Students will explore different techniques for painting with wax and incorporate mixed media. The focus will be on integrating encaustic painting into your own personal expression. Abstract Acrylic Painting this course is an investigation of abstract painting using fluid and gel mediums. Employing painting knives, squeegees and brushes, the class will experiment with transparent effects, including layering, on various types of surfaces. Structured weekly assignments will bring together information about value, color and composition with abstract approaches to acrylic. All the exercises help you reach your goals in painting as well as abstraction, which is not very different from painting representative work. Pour Painting This class is for students who want to express their creativity but lack art skills. Paint in oils and use gravity to move the paint. Handmade Photo Albums

Due to its immediacy and painterly qualities, monoprint is highly rewarding for artists who don’t want to be encumbered by complicated technical processes. The class will work exclusively with water-based media. These new methods eliminate the need for solvents and makes clean-up a snap. Explore a variety of approaches to the monoprint, including additive and subtractive methods and chine colle, the application of thin, decorative papers. In this workshop, students construct a hardback photo album. This is an accordion structure set up for horizontal pictures. There is minimal gluing involved. Continuing Education students learn new skills and make crafts to give as gifts or keep for themselves. Clamshell/Drop-Spine or Solander Box Making Goodness, does this one structure have enough names? Learn how to construct a box that looks like a book when closed. When opened it lays flat and has two trays that are suitable for photo displays, presentations or protecting antique plates or books. This box is beautiful, sturdy and versatile. It has unlimited uses in the library or by the book artist. We’ll use beautiful decorative papers and book cloth to cover your creation. Clay: Throwing on the Pottery Wheel In a friendly environment, learn the basics of how to use the pottery wheel to make functional pots. Learn everything from wedging the clay and centering on the wheel, to how to trim, finish and glaze your cups, mugs, bowls and other objects. Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay

Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Students will practice firing with a small butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. The Router: Tips and Techniques NEW!

Valles Caldera Ecology Hike on the South Rim OFF-CAMPUS This six-mile, round trip hike will explore the overall ecology of the floor of Caldera to the southern rim. We will be in the area of the first and second day of Las Conchas fire in June 2011. We can see the response of these habitats and ecosystems to the various burn intensities, from mild to severe. We’ll also see the overlap of La Mesa and the Dome fires to the east and south, and how the southern Jemez Mountains have evolved with drought, conflagration and regeneration. The hike begins in Ojo Caliente and explores Posi-owinge and the ancient agricultural fields that surround the pueblo. Dr. Yates will introduce participants to the technological skills used by Pueblo farmers during the Pueblo IV period. Other archaeological features at the site are kivas, plazas and mounded room blocks. Posi-owinge was the largest ancient village located along the Rio Ojo Caliente. Course #SW363 01/CRN 10697 Martha Yates, Fee $75 Hiking Antiquity, Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Site OFF-CAMPUS This is a three- to four-hour hike through some of the most stunning petroglyphs in New Mexico. Mesa Prieta is a major geological basalt formation overlooking the Rio Grande just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo in northern New Mexico. Along the mesa’s eastern slope is the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph site, on private land and containing more than 6,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (5500 B.C.) to modern times. The site is famous for its many shield figures, abundant flute-playing animals and historic images from Spanish settlers. Registration Register now! Continuous, semester-long registration has begun. All registrations, whether online, by phone, by fax, by mail or in person, are being accepted now. Classes start throughout the semester. Find the latest continuing education class listings on our Web site at www.sfcc.edu. Many classes fill quickly. We recommend that you register no later than four working days before the starting date of the class. You may register for most classes up until the starting date, but if you delay, the class may either be full or canceled due to insufficient enrollment. Registrations cannot be accepted at classes. NOTE Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices and room assignments may change without notice. Please check the Web site for current information. SFCC is not responsible for typographical errors. Registration is not considered final until payment has been made.

Class FEES Continuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students. Class fees are subject to change without notice. Please check the Web site for current information and review the refund policy before registering. SFCC User name and password SFCC assigns each student a user name. You can get your user name by going to www.sfcc.edu and clicking on the link to JACK. Once there, follow the instructions to find your user name and password. REFUND POLICY Class fees are automatically refunded in full when: • the class or workshop is full. • the activity is canceled. •S FCC rejects the enrollment application. If you drop a class, your class fee is automatically refunded based on the following: Classes of three or more sessions • I f you drop a class before the second session, the full class fee will be refunded. • I f you drop a class after the second session, no refund will be given. Classes of one or two sessions • I f you drop a class at least one day before the starting date, the full class fee will be refunded. • I f you drop a class less than one day before the starting date, no refund will be given.
