WELCOME TO FALL! Bucket list anyone? In the first few months of my new job here as Director, several students have told me that some of our classes are on their bucket lists: Wine and Food Pairing, Pueblo Style Loom Beading and the upcoming Greece trip are a few examples. Our goal is that you find opportunities for wonderful experiences in these pages. This fall schedule is packed with outdoor adventures 9,000 feet up in the golden aspens or more grounded in SFCC’s kitchens making holiday cookies and gingerbread houses with your kids. Whether you want to build new computer skills, plan your spring garden, make your own jewelry or be transported to Puerto Rico through cooking, I hope you are excited by our offerings and choose to enroll in a class today. Figure Seminar Life Drawing

Drawing the nude — from quick, warm-up, gesture drawings to two long studies per evening — improves drawing skills, awareness and understanding of one of the oldest traditions in art. Charcoal Landscape Drawing

Charcoal is a rich and lively medium with which you are able to create powerful black and white imagery. Not only is it easy to work with, it is a fun way to translate the landscape into a finished work of art. Using simple vine charcoal, learn to draw images in no time that look exactly like the scene you’re viewing. If you enjoy painting with very large brushes, you will appreciate learning to fashion charcoal into “brushes” that sweep across the paper with ease and delight. Practice and perfect skills first introduced in the Charcoal I class. You will discover easy and fun ways to use paint, brushes, and paper to create lovely effects that will excite and entertain. Starting with basic brush manipulations, explore different subject matter while practicing a variety of paint applications on both wet and dry paper. Oil Painting Basics

Calligraphy and Lettering Arts

Learn the art of beautiful writing using the simplest of tools, a chisel-pointed pen nib and ink. Practice the lower and upper case letterforms of italic writing. Silver Jewelry Using Metal Clay

Silver metal clay is an exciting material consisting of silver particles in a nontoxic binder and water. It looks, feels and acts like clay. When heated, the binder and water burn away to leave 99-percent pure silver. Practice firing with a small butane torch, an easy process that takes just minutes. NEW! Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center Tour

A visit to Ampersand Learning Center will expand your horizons for living in harmony with the Earth. The Center is a living demonstration site for sustainable practices, permaculture and associated technologies. It relies exclusively on rainwater for all water and solar technology for most heating. The off-grid site has been developing since 2004. It has four naturally built structures, land restoration projects, salvage material use, organic gardening, photovoltaics, greywater systems and composting. Amanda and Andy Bramble have developed these systems and built everything with the help of volunteers, interns and apprentices. The Center is located a mile and half down a rough dirt road 30 minutes from SFCC campus. Carpooling options are available. This class guides you through the concepts and terms necessary to successfully negotiate an identification key. An introductory classroom session familiarizes you with the botanical basics of flower anatomy. Hit the field on the weekend and visit several different habitats. Hiking Antiquity: Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Site

This one-mile round trip hike led by Dr. Martha Yates takes the class through one of the most stunning petroglyph sites in New Mexico, famous for its shield figures, many flute-playing animals, water snakes and Spanish crosses from the historic period. Visit the Wells Petroglyph Preserve owned by the Archaeological Conservancy. At only 156-acres, this portion of the Mesa contains more than 9,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic, (2,000-5,000 years old) to modern times. For the last 24 years, the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, a non-profit with numerous national awards for its work, has been helping to preserve the Mesa’s cultural heritage. Over 45,000 images of the estimated 80,000 on the Mesa have now been recorded by the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project. This World Heritage Site and national park hosts a complex of buildings that reflect a knowledge of celestial relationships. This one-day hiking adventure will explore a unique, hidden canyon in the Abiquiu area. A 3.5-mile round trip hike will take us through a small canyon that exposes brilliantly colored rock layers at the boundary between the Rio Grande Rift and the Colorado Plateau. We then ascend 400 feet to an overlook of Copper Canyon â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a broad, majestic canyon well off the tourist trails. Field discussions will focus on the changing shape of the landscape in this region of northern New Mexico, as persistent geologic and erosional forces have sculpted the landscape over time. Cerro Grande is a large volcanic dome on the southeastern rim of the Valles Caldera. At the summit of 10,200 ft., there are spectacular views looking into the caldera and across the southern Jemez Mountains. The hike is moderately strenuous, climbing 1,200 feet in elevation, and is a 4-mile round trip. There is much geology to discuss en route, including the volcanic history of the Jemez Mountains prior to the eruption of the Valles Caldera, and the long history of fresh water lakes that have existed within the caldera. Katherine Fox Ehlert, MM, CMP, teaches Customer Relations as Instructor and Coordinator of the SFCC Hospitality & Tourism Program. As a hospitality and tourism expert, she has spoken at National and International Hospitality conferences in Las Vegas, Chicago, Dallas and Geneva, Switzerland.

Jason Goodyear is a media composer, musician, sound artist and educator who works with new music and communication technologies and has been teaching at SFCC in Continuing Education for over 10 years.

Marvin Gabaldon is a bead work artist from the pueblos of Acoma, Taos and Ohkay Owingeh. He was introduced to the art of bead work from his mother when he was 10 years old; he has been beading for over 35 years. He enjoys sewing in applique, peyote stitch and especially looming.

Gordon Hall is an avid pickle ball player and likes to share his enthusiasm for the game with others.

Richard Gabriel is a practicing tin artist whose work is available in many museum and gift shops around New Mexico. He is also an award-winning exhibitor at Spanish Market. Tom Gallegos provides cultural and educational tours throughout northern New Mexico helping visitors experience Santa Fe, native Pueblos, Spanish villages and unique cuisine. Tom leads tours for Adventure Partners and is awaiting publication of his first novel, “Secrets to Tell” on the early years of the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos. He holds Master’s degrees from Arizona State University and the University of Kansas. Kristian Gebhart is a life guard and water safety instructor at SFCC.

Kevin Gorges has studied art in the U.S. and abroad and has taught in Ireland and Italy. Currently he teaches at SFCC. Annette Groenfeldt has been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1988.

Elizabeth Harris has been teaching sewing at SFCC for over 15 years. Amanda Hatherly is a Certified Food for Life instructor through the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine. She has a certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University and successfully completed the Plant Based Professional Certification through Rouxbe Cooking School. She is also Director of SFCC’s Center of Excellence for Green Building and Energy Efficiency and New Mexico Energy Smart Academy. Kerry Helke, a passionate hiker and veteran of many 14ers in Colorado, is very familiar with the trails in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico. Working as Adventure Director for Santa Fe Mountain Adventures, she planned team-building exercises for corporate groups and fun family activities.

Art Herlihy is a ski and swim instructor. He teaches business classes at SFCC. Belinda Jentzen is Ward Brinegar’s dance partner. Robin Kunz has been a professional designer for more than 20 years. She holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design, NYC, and an AAS in Media Arts/Web, from SFCC. Since 2010 she has been an instructor with SFCC, helping develop the curriculum for the Media Arts web program. Thomas Lehn received his BFA from San Francisco State University and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is an artist, interior/furniture designer and maker whose roots are in interdisciplinary solutions. He currently teaches at Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

Aaron Leventman received an MFA from Columbia University’s Graduate School for Film where his thesis screenplay was given a professional reading at the Union Square Theatre in Manhattan. He was the Head of Programming for the Santa Fe Film Festival, a programming consultant for the Albuquerque Film and Music Experience and the Producer for the Bioneers Moving Image Festival. He’s also a working actor who has performed with most of the theatre companies in Santa Fe.

Jacqueline Mallegni creates mixed media minimalist sculpture with a focus on the concept of “the spaces between” exploring the perception of a landscape. What is it we, as humans, choose to see. The spaces between us and them, inside and outside; the space between contemplation and chaos. The intention is to evoke a sense of place and one’s relationship to that place.

Michael Long has a MFA from the University of Colorado. Long has taught workshops in both art and photography in Austin, Boulder and Santa Fe.

David Markwardt began the Challenge Ropes Course program at SFCC in 1996. David believes participating in the ropes course is a fantastic way for people to step out of their comfort zones, overcome self-limiting beliefs and develop closer connections and relationships with their teammates. David is also a published poet and earned an MFA in Poetry.

Laura LoTurco-Gorian has an MFA in Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts.

Miquela Martinez is a fitness instructor working toward her master’s degree at UNM.

Catherine Louisell is a massage therapist and movement specialist.

Fernando Mayans oversees the Spanish language program in Continuing Education at SFCC and is a native of Uruguay. He teaches advanced Spanish classes as well as being a translator for the Santa Fe Opera.

Andrew Lovato has been teaching guitar to Santa Fe youth and adults for 30 years. Formerly a professor at the College of Santa Fe, he is now an Assistant Professor at SFCC.

Brother Donald Mouton has taught religious studies for 38 years at Santa Fe University of Art and Design and College of Santa Fe. He earned a Doctorate in Sacred Theology at Institut Catholique in Paris, France. Peter Murphy is a retirement and estate planning specialist, teaching at SFCC for over five years. Cheryl Noonan teaches and performs in the Santa Fe area for both public and private events. Cheryl’s early experience with her third grade drillette team got her hooked on dancing. She believes in creating a patient, relaxing environment for students. She enjoys teaching social dances such as West Coast Swing and Night Club 2-Step — two versatile styles that work with a wide variety of music. William Neuwirth has an MS in Biology and is a seasoned outdoor tour guide. She designs local economy networks, systems, and development plans for businesses, organizations and government agencies that put our communities first. John Rayburn is a firearms safety instructor and competitive shooter. Rayburn has also been teaching Santa Feans how to dance for several decades. Theresa Roybal has an MBA from Highlands University and is the Academic and Student Affairs Coordinator at SFCC. John St. Peter has an MFA and teaches K through 8th grade at El Camino Real Academy. Paul Sakion, has been involved with technology for over 30 years, beginning his career as a Unix Consultant at the University of California, San Diego. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where he encountered his first bit of primitive malware and promptly infected his coworkers through what was the precursor to the modern Internet. Since then, online security has been an obsession throughout his years as an Electrical Engineer working in corporate America.

Sandra Schroeder, PhD, has painted at Ghost Ranch for 25 years and now teaches watercolor there. Trained in the basics at the Art Institute of Chicago, she has expanded her skill through extensive plein air painting, studio painting workshops, critique groups and experimentation. She is a Signature Member of the NM Watercolor Society and has exhibited in a broad range of venues. John H. Shannon III is a published author and 26-year career Army officer with two combat deployments to Afghanistan. He earned an MA in Urban Planning from State University of New York at Buffalo. He is also fluent in Italian. Jane Shoenfeld has been teaching pastel landscape painting at Ghost Ranch for 12 years.

Anna Sochocky is a writer with an emphasis on articles about horses and the equine community. After receiving her graduate degree in creative writing with a focus on memoir and a 25-year career in politics, Anna rediscovered her love of horses and riding upon meeting a 17.3 hand Irish Sport Horse. Aside from professional writing, Anna spends most of her time with her horse and his 1,300 pounds of opinion learning dressage movements and exploring the high desert. Holly Spellman has been teaching golf for 15 years and has been with LPGA for the past 6 years. She is an adjunct faculty member and facility supervisor at the SFCC Fitness Education Center. Joseph Sulzburg is a retired educator and has been working in stained glass for many years. LeAnne Summers is a photographer and has been teaching credit and non-credit classes at SFCC for over 10 years. Margo Taylor is an experienced traveler and chef and recent graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at SFCC.

Classes are held at Santa Fe Community College and at other locations in and around Santa Fe. The location of your class will be noted on the confirmation you receive by email.

All data are for office and statistical purposes only. Students are assigned a student identification number for record keeping. You may register for as many classes as you wish. Read the information on Page 42 before registering. All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Many classes fill quickly. Classes may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met at least three working days before class begins. Registration is not considered final until payment has been made.
