Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Erosion of these strata is producing beautiful hoodoos and other stunning shapes. The hike provides a wonderful outdoor classroom to discuss the geologic history of the Española Basin and to observe important geologic features preserved in the strata, including volcanic ash beds from giant eruptions in Nevada. Elevation gain and loss on the hike is approximately 300 feet. Bring adequate water, lunch, all weather hiking gear, and (optional) hiking poles. As you cross the caldera from east to west, several roadside exposures and vistas

will help tell the story of caldera formation, post-caldera volcanic activity, and the existence of caldera-filling lakes. If weather and time permit take an easy 2-mile, round-trip hike to an overlook of San Diego Canyon from the caldera’s south rim. Bring adequate outdoor clothing, water and your lunch. Discuss the interplay of human-induced change, drought, fire, competition/cooperation between piñons and junipers, episodic outbreaks of insects, and why this ecosystem is the most sensitive to small variations in moisture and temperature. Long- and short-term temporal cycles can be seen all around. Class size is limited to a small number. Students will carpool from SFCC. Bring water and your lunch. At only 156-acres, this portion of the Mesa contains more than 9,000 petroglyphs dating from Archaic (2,000-5,000 years old) to modern times. For the last 24 years, the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, a non-profit with numerous national awards for its work, has been helping to preserve the Mesa’s cultural heritage.
