Iyengar Yoga
Developed by yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar more than 60 years ago, Iyengar yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses that require precise body alignment. Equipment like blankets, straps and blocks help the less flexible and also distinguishes Iyengar from other types of yoga. Although Iyengar incorporates the traditional postures, or asanas, that make up the broader category of hatha yoga, the props revolutionized yoga by enabling everyone — even the elderly, sick and disabled to practice. Because of its slow pace, attention to detail and use of props, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. Instant Piano
Some music teachers may not want you to know this, but you don’t need years of weekly lessons to learn piano. In just a few hours, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to give you years of musical enjoyment. How do we do it? While regular piano teachers teach note reading, piano professionals use chords. And you can learn all the chords you’ll need to play any song in this one session. Any song. Any style. Any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop. The instructor will collect a $29 materials fee for a book and CD. The extreme conditions of the highest reaches of our local mountains will show us adaptability at the edge. A moderately difficult hike of 5 miles over 1,100 vertical feet out of the ski basin parking lot allows us to encounter many micro-habitats and soaring views. Organisms near tree line must adapt to windy, cold and often dry conditions, and when water is present, it is frozen for a good part of the year. Views of the Pacheco Fire will give us an idea of the long cycle of succession at high elevations. See how small changes in exposure and soil make a world of difference for many plants. The carving action of glaciers will be apparent at the apex of our hike, where the elements of nature are severe and plants must complete their annual growth in a matter of weeks. Bring your hiking gear, rain wear and lunch. Meet at the lower end of the Santa Fe Ski Area parking lot at the Winsor Trailhead.
