SOUTHWEST ADVENTURES NEW! New Mexico Voices from the Past
Explore the vast treasure of untold stories from New Mexico’s Spanish, Mexican and Territorial period archives. Examine the accomplishments, triumphs and tragedies experienced by individuals you did not hear about in history class. Learn about a UFO sighting south of Santa Fe — in 1880! Hear how marriage proposals were made; about economic reports from the nineteenth century that tell us how New Mexicans made their living; hear the eloquent death sentence delivered to a condemned prisoner by a stern territorialperiod judge who also wrote romantic letters to his wife; the tragic story of the teenaged bride and her childhood friend who were condemned to hang for poisoning her husband. These and other “voices from the past” provide fascinating and little-known details about New Mexico’s history. 7/9, T, 6-7:30p, CRN 10612 Robert J. Torrez, Fee: $29
NEW! The Colonial Military in New Mexico
New Mexico was settled in 1598 by a small group of soldier-colonists. Their responsibility was to defend the colony’s vast frontier until a presidio, or formal military garrison was established in Santa Fe after the re-conquest of New Mexico by Diego de Vargas in 1692. This presidio functioned though the period of the Mexican Republic (1821-1846). Review the history of the presidio itself and discuss the important role militia played in support of the small military garrison. What was the life of a soldier like in New Mexico during the Spanish and Mexican regimes? Discover the duties they performed, their pay, housing, food and their role in society. 7/23, T, 6-7:30p, CRN 10613 Robert J. Torrez, Fee: $29
Alpine Ecology
The extreme conditions of the highest reaches of our local mountains will show us adaptability at the edge. A moderately difficult hike of five miles over 1,100 vertical feet out of the ski basin parking lot allows us to encounter many micro-habitats and soaring views. Organisms near tree line must adapt to windy, cold and often dry conditions, and when water is present, it is frozen for a good part

of the year. Views of the Pacheco Fire will give us an idea of the long cycle of succession at high elevations. See how small changes in exposure and soil make a world of difference for many plants. The carving action of glaciers will be apparent at the apex of our hike, where the elements of nature are severe and plants must complete their annual growth in a matter of weeks. Bring your hiking gear, rain wear and lunch. Meet at the lower end of the Santa Fe Ski Area parking lot at the Winsor Trailhead. 6/15, S, 8a-5p, CRN 10611 William Neuwirth, Fee: $79
Animal Tracking
Learn more about those animal tracks you’ve noticed on your walks or hikes. Learn tracking techniques, perceptual widening, different track patterns, scale and animal gaits, rates of track deterioration, clues to animal behavior and animal interaction with the landscape. Students must provide their own transportation. An itinerary is provided after registration. Class size is small to allow for more personal attention, so early registration is encouraged. 6/10, M, 8a-5p, CRN 10607 William Neuwirth, Fee: $79
Let’s go fishing! Fly-fishing is a relaxing and artful pastime that can appear daunting to the new angler. All-day classes will take place on nearby rivers and lakes such as Pecos, Rio Grande, Santa Cruz Lake and others. On-the-water instruction covers entomology, fly selection, rigs, holding water, wading safety, etiquette on the river and techniques. Students need a fishing license and equipment; both are available for purchase or rent during the first class. Special rental prices for students will be offered by The Reel Life. 6/7-7/5, F, 9a-1p, CRN 10637 The Reel Life, Fee: $199
NEW! Exploring the Valle Vidal — Overnight Trip
Enjoy a full-day exploration of the rugged wilderness of Valle Vidal in the Carson National Forrest. Hike near Rio Costillo and up through the higher elevations to the heart of Valle Vidal. Explore the extensive rolling grass-covered meadow surrounded by conifer and quaking aspen forests. As you hike, learn about cavity nesting birds, the large herd of elk and other abundant wildlife. At elevations of 7,700 to 12,500 feet plant life is varied and abundant. Join naturalist, wilderness guide and former NM Audubon Education Director Janie Chodosh on this journey. The first day you will travel to Taos, share dinner with the group and stay in a hotel. Day two is your exploration adventure and you will overnight again in Taos. After your registration is confirmed, you will need to make your hotel reservation and pay with a credit card. Drive your own vehicle and meet the instructor at a pre-arranged location. Bring lunch, snacks, water and sunblock for

On our way to Canada Bonita, we walk through an edge of the Cerro Grande fire into the Las Conchas fire path of June 2011. A primary driver of biodiversity in the Jemez Mountains, periodic fires have shaped the landscape for millennia. See the beginning of changes to the habitats and learn the importance of refuges and micro-habitats. 6/24, M, 8a-5p, CRN 10608 William Neuwirth, Fee: $79

We’ll also see the overlap of La Mesa and the Dome fires to the east and south, and how the southern Jemez Mountains have evolved with drought, conflagration and regeneration. 7/12, F, 8a-5p, CRN 10609 William Neuwirth, Fee: $79
