FROM THE BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS BOARD CHAIRMAN †
Wow! What a year! We have persevered through some great challenges starting with the tornado in the fall of 2019 and ending with the COVID pandemic in the spring of 2020. We’ve also had great successes in between, including the celebration of three of our schools achieving National Blue Ribbon honors and welcoming Bishop DeGrood to the Diocese of Sioux Falls. I want to send a big THANK YOU to the teachers, administrators, parents, support staff and central office staff for successfully moving to online learning this past spring. As a parent of a 6th grader, a senior and as a board member, I was able to see this firsthand on both sides and was impressed with our ability to maintain our high level of academic excellence throughout. In the midst of the challenges, I would be remiss not to point out some successes, including a football state title; a new Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter at the high school; numerous advent giving and service projects throughout the grade schools, junior high and high school. These are just a few highlights of the many great achievements of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools system. From the 203 graduating seniors, we have seen great academic success including 12 National Merit Finalists and an additional 143 students obtaining other academic accolades. Very impressive! As we enter the 2020-2021 year, we will be faced with new challenges as we get back to “normal” in the classroom and in activities. We are extremely blessed to have a strong faith community along with a great Bishop, priests, families and staff that will work tirelessly to continue our great success for years to come. It has been my honor to serve as your School Board Chair for the 2019-2020 school year. Thank you and God bless,
Brandi Kowalczyk Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board Chair
FROM THE BISHOP OF THE SIOUX FALLS DIOCESE Dear Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools families, When Pope Francis’ representative called me and asked if I would serve as the Bishop of Sioux Falls, I asked him if I could pray about it. When I took the question to the adoration chapel where I was pastor at the time, it became clear to me that our Lord wanted me to say “yes” and that He was also assuring me that I would be given all that I need to carry out this new role. As I am adjusting to being bishop, even during the pandemic and its impact on our daily lives, I would like to think that the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools system is an example of the Lord offering me the tools that I need. What joy it brings me to see parishes partnering together to offer Catholic education. The cooperation shown in our Catholic school system is a beautiful expression of how God intends for all of us to rely on one another and to draw from one another’s strengths. While I look forward to more normal visits to the schools and classrooms in our Catholic school system, I have already been shown some of its many fruits in my brief time as bishop. What a blessing it is to hear of the academic and extracurricular successes that the students have accomplished. More importantly, I am delighted when I hear of those whose time at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has helped them grow in their Catholic faith. The focus of our schools' curriculum on the mind, body and soul is so very important to help our young people actively live their Catholic faith and be healthy, happy and holy. Through your charitable contributions to the parishes, the enrollment of your children in its schools and through your generous donations to the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, you help to ensure this great resource will be here not only for today’s youth but also tomorrow’s. Thank you for your generous support of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools! Know of my prayers,
Most Reverend Donald E. DeGrood Bishop of Sioux Falls
FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS †
Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends, The blessing of the generous support received from the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community are detailed in these pages, but the numbers do not tell the story of how each gift enriches the educational opportunities of our students. Each gift is an act of faith and trust in the next generation of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools students. Our mission is, “to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence.” From the tornado that ravaged our city in September to a global pandemic that paralyzed our city and its citizens, our community has never been more important. Your commitment to Catholic education will have lasting effects on our students’ academic, spiritual and emotional success. Over the course of the 2019-2020 school year, our schools continued to raise the bar of excellence. Our school community celebrated O’Gorman Junior High, St. Katharine Drexel Elementary and St. Mary Elementary all being named National Blue Ribbon Schools. O’Gorman High School had 12 seniors named as National Merit Semi-Finalists, 11 of which were named finalist. Our students raised money to support the displaced tenants of the apartment complex ravaged by September’s tornado. We cheered on our Knights as they won the 2019 11AAA state football title. Our girls and boys basketball seasons were cut short even though both were primed to become state champions. We sympathize with our students in the spring musical, performing arts and spring sports who missed opportunities to showcase their talents. I am humbled when I look back and see the great work being done to promote a Christ-centered education for our youth and it only happens with faithful partners like you. I want to also take this opportunity to thank each of our families for the academic support you provided for your children this past spring. It was a tremendous amount of work on behalf of all involved. God bless and thanks to all of you who have contributed throughout this past year! On behalf of the faculty and staff, thank you for making a real difference in the lives of our students.
With continued prayers and gratitude,
Kyle L. Groos

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is an incredible community of people who are united in their belief in our mission to provide students a strong academic education infused with our Catholic faith. These members of our community consistently step up to ensure our students, staff and schools are well taken care of. This is what sets us apart from others; it’s what people love about our schools. As I reflect on this beautiful community and this most unusual school year, the words "time", "talent" and "treasure" stand out to me. TIME - As a busy parent, I understand how valuable time is. I am so thankful for the many parents, grandparents, students and supporters who offer their valuable time to ensure the success of our schools. I am in awe of the parents who make time to volunteer for the Dakota Bowl and Extravaganza committees, Athletic Boosters, music and arts committees, local School and SFO committees, as well as helping out with the individual groups and sports that their children belong to. As Director of Development for our Catholic schools, I can honestly say that these events and activities would not be what they are without YOU! I am incredibly grateful for all that you do. TALENT - Where do I even begin? The level of talent that we have in our community is beyond amazing. We have so many extremely talented parents who help create and plan our school and system events, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars each and every year to support our schools. We also have students who, with the guidance of some incredible teachers, share their own gifts and talents, bringing great joy to many in our community. God has truly blessed us with these gifts of talent. TREASURE - I had no idea what to expect when we decided to cancel the in-person Extravaganza and go virtual instead. Would we be able to raise enough money? I had read that if people believed in your mission, they would find a way to support it. How phenomenal was it, then, when our community came together and raised a record amount during a pandemic? People were incredibly generous, all to support our mission and our staff. I extend my sincerest gratitude to this community for continuing to give of their treasure to allow us to continue our mission. I hope during these crazy and uncertain times you are able to find some positives. Make time for what is truly important to you, share your talents with others and let us all continue to thank God for the many ways He has blessed us all.

a community like none other
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has a community like none other. It’s so much more than a school system that pursues academic excellence. It not only strives for excellent academics from its students, but it also helps form its students spiritually. Our schools help students instill a strong relationship with Christ to help guide them not only on a path for success professionally and academically but also on a path for success in life holistically.
With the mission being, “To form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence,” those Gospel values follow our students well into adulthood and pave a way for a new generation that puts faith and religion in the forefront of their lives. This spills over into every area of their lives. They learn about the giving nature through Jesus’ teaching to serve one another. From donation drives and volunteer opportunities, our students are always looking to give back to their community. This year, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools students took on many charitable causes. In the fall, a tornado came dangerously close to the high school’s campus. It just missed the school grounds but completely decimated an apartment building just across the street from the school’s parking lot. Students decided for Homecoming they would rally together to raise money for all the displaced residents of the building to help them find a new place to call home. Through their effort, students raised over $12,000 for those displaced from their home due to the destruction created by the tornado. Another fundraising effort put forth by the high school was their annual Advent Giving Project for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. Students collected essential items to donate to residents there. This year, they were able to donate 42 large boxes of supplies, 200 stockings filled with various items and 40 gift bags for children. Each school did their own unique drive over
the Advent season that benefitted various non-profits around the area. Holy Spirit Elementary donated pajamas to Children’s Home Society and Children’s Inn. St. Michael Elementary wrote letters to Santa through Macy’s Believe campaign which benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. St. Katharine Drexel Elementary collected supplies for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. St. Lambert Elementary raised money for the Teddy Bear Den. St. Mary Elementary participated in a service project by volunteering at Touchmark at All Saints retirement home as well as collecting items for the Benedictine Sisters. Christ the King Elementary fundraised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. O’Gorman Junior High collected items and money for Feeding South Dakota. The generosity and passion of the students to give back to their communities is incredible and our hope is that the philanthropic spirit sticks with them well into adulthood. Vice versa, it is our duty as an organization to do the same for our students and their families. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools strives to help and support its families in any way we can. Late in the second semester of school, the dayto-day normalcy of classroom learning was turned upside down when the COVID-19 pandemic made its presence in our community. Classes came to an abrupt stop when school closures were announced. Distance learning practices were quickly set into place and students were able to learn from home to keep proper safety measures intact through the course of the local pandemic outbreak. This was how they, unknowingly, would finish out the rest of their school year.
This also meant hardships for many parents who still had to go to work but were left with children now unexpectedly at home. Administrators at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools felt it was our turn, amidst the situation at hand, to help give back to our families during these trying times. A childcare service for emergency workers was set up and provided to families of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Childcare was provided for medical workers and first responders at Holy Spirit Elementary so parents didn’t have to worry about childcare when they were needed at work. Jennifer Haubert is a local nurse practitioner and her husband, Ian, owns his own plumbing business and were both considered essential employees who had to continue working throughout the pandemic. They have four elementaryage children which created a predicament for them when they heard about the school closures. They were relieved to find out the childcare service was being offered and they utilized the service almost every day that it was open. “When the pandemic first started and schools were closing, we were not sure how we were going to make the rest of the year work. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools providing daycare to ‘essential’ workers was truly a life saver! I seriously do not know how we would have gotten through the end of the school year, without it!” said Jennifer. Many faculty members came together to make sure this service was available to families. They worked very hard to make sure not only the service was available but was also set up in a manner that followed CDC guidelines to ensure children and staff there remained healthy and safe. “Mary Lou, Mrs. Moe and their team were AMAZING! They were so kind and thoughtful in helping out with the kids during such an uncertain time,” said Jennifer. Not only was the service provided to make sure children had adequate supervision but also helped parents with the children’s distance learning so that a majority of the day’s work would be done while they were at the child care center. “The daycare also had to deal with watching children from all of the Bishop O’Gorman elementary schools, each with their own curriculum, and yet somehow they managed! While we did have some homework to do in the evening, the bulk majority was done during the day, making our lives so much easier! The added stress of working full time in healthcare during the start of the pandemic on top of ‘teaching’ four children, was too much, but the school, again, came to the rescue,” said Jennifer.
With school being closed for the rest of the year, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools also wanted to ensure all students were getting proper nutrition throughout the rest of the school year. From the start of the school closures, Grab-N-Go meals were available for families, free of charge, every weekday for the remainder of the school year. Each day families were able to pick up lunch for that day and breakfast for the following day for their students at O’Gorman Junior High. Hundreds of meals were given out every week to help support families that were struggling due to the conditions set forth by the pandemic. Many faculty members came together to make this effort possible. Jacki Bosseler was one of those staff members. She works in Accounts Payable at the Central Office. “With all the unknowns during the pandemic, we hope by providing breakfast and lunches to our families that took away a little added stress with all that is going on in the world,” said Jacki. Through hard work, dedication and passion we create a community of faith which helps, supports and encourages one another. Together we create a faith community which allows us to help and serve one another as Jesus taught us to. This is truly what sets Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools apart from other schools and makes it such a special place. We are all so truly blessed to be surrounded by such generous, caring and loving individuals. Thank you for your dedication and passion to these schools and our mission. We can never thank you all enough for all that you do.

The Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Development Office and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation work together to provide tuition assistance for faith-based education, compensation to our dedicated staff and resources to enhance our facilities and technology. Both organizations are working together to build a community of faith and learning for students today and in the future by promoting Gospel values and academic excellence. The Development Office is responsible for raising money annually to help support the day-to-day operations of our school system. This includes raising funds for tuition assistance, staff salaries and benefits along with capital improvements. It is also very important that the Development Office create events that can build our community. The Foundation is responsible for raising money for the long term by focusing on establishing long-term investments with annual distributions used to ensure a Catholic education will be available for current students in coming years as well as for future generations. A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION †
As I reflect upon my first year as the executive director of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation, I am incredibly grateful that God’s journey led me to such an extraordinary place. With the opportunity to meet so many of you, I’ve heard your stories of what makes Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools so special. From lives forever impacted by our dedicated educators to relationships deepened with Christ, one does not have to look very hard to understand the impact we are having on our young people. Nicole R. Bruning, Executive Director
In fact, as I think about the past year, the words “community” and “faith” resonate with me. Although I did not grow up in Sioux Falls or have the opportunity to attend Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, you have embraced me into the O’Gorman community and have made me feel like family. The generosity of this community of tight-knit alumni, family and friends continues to amaze me every day. This is especially true now, more than ever, as our community has stepped up to support the future of Catholic schools during such uncertain times. Near my desk in the Foundation Office, I have a sign that reads, “Have faith in your child’s education.” The continued success that we are having at the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation is because you have faith in what our schools do to prepare our students both educationally and spiritually. Because of your gifts to key endowment funds, we are able to support more families with scholarships and tuition assistance, help our dedicated teachers receive competitive salaries and benefits and maintain top-notch facilities and technology. THANK YOU to all the faithful who help us sustain our world-class Catholic education for generations to come!
Nicole R. Bruning Executive Director Philip Johnson, Foundation Chair

#TUESDAYFORTEACHERS Tuesday for Teachers is an annual fundraiser put on by the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation for Giving Tuesday with the goal of raising money to help support the key teacher salary endowments. In order to keep the best and brightest minds in our schools, offering competitive wages is very important. To ensure we are attracting the best teachers and staff to our schools, we must be able to offer similar wages to other schools in the surrounding area. This year, the effort raised a record breaking total of $79,955.37! Thanks to many donors and supporting businesses, this effort raised more than any other year. This helps ensure we can competitively compensate our teachers so that we are obtaining the best talent we can for our classrooms. The teachers are the backbone of our schools and being able to support them appropriately is a high priority to our schools. Efforts like Tuesday for Teachers allow us to do that.
“The Catholic School System teachers are dedicated to the students and the church. As our good friend Paul Connelly told us, ‘It’s an injustice to not pay our teachers well.’ We believe teachers should be paid well,” said the Carlsons. Michelle witnessed great works of service growing up in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools school system. She cherished the time she had teaching there and witnessed incredible dedication from the staff, who could have easily taught in the public schools, but believed in the mission of the organization and felt the call to serve. “The salaries need to be competitive with the public schools, so we can keep recruiting great staff to continue teaching faith-based education,” said the Carlsons.
This year proved extra trying to educators. Faced with a global pandemic, students and teachers had to abruptly stop and switch lessons from in classrooms to a digital format. BISHOP LEVEL
Bishop Donald DeGrood Bishop Donald DeGrood was appointed the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls. He was born in Faribault, MN on February 14, 1965. He attended Catholic school there and graduated from Bethlehem Academy Catholic High School in 1983. Growing up in and attending Catholic school instilled a strong sense of the importance of prayer throughout his life. “Prayer in the classroom, on a daily basis, was a big thing for me. It built the foundation of my relationship with the Lord. Prayer before meals, prayer in gratitude, prayer for assistance on tests. Looking back it helped me realize the need I had for God in all things and how gracious and forgiving He always is,” said Bishop DeGrood. After graduating high school, he then attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN where he graduated with a BA in philosophy in 1987. He worked in business for several years upon graduating before deciding to pursue a priestly vocation. He always felt the pull to a life in the priesthood. “When I was kid I remember feeling a deep desire inside my heart to love God. God’s love for me from my youth, and going forward, kept drawing me to want to be alone to receive His love and listen to what He wanted in my life. I was blessed to have a wonderful family - parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc - all of them helped to shape my spiritual life just by being present and living their faith. It wasn’t just one thing, but many experiences over time that drew me to pursue the priesthood,” said Bishop DeGrood. He then entered the St. Paul Seminary in 1993 and earned a Masters in Divinity and was ordained a priest on May 31, 1997. He served as parochial vicar at All Saints Church in Lakeville, MN before being assigned to serve as a formator and spiritual director at St. John Vianney Seminary. He was then assigned as pastor of St. Peter in Forest Lake, MN. In the summer of 2013, he served on the Archdiocesan Incardination Committee, the Ministerial Review Board and on an ad hoc committee geared towards addressing the needs of clergy. He also served two terms on the Board of Trustees of The Seminaries of Saint Paul. Bishop DeGrood was then ordained and installed as bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls on February 13, 2020. “My focus is on creating lifelong missionary disciples through God’s love. The more we know and love God, the more our life changes. It begins when we are young, watching our parents, family, teachers and changes and grows as we experience more and more. This deeper understanding of God’s unconditional love inspires us to live our faith out loud in our actions rather than our words,” said Bishop DeGrood regarding the impact he hopes to make on the diocese and the schools within the diocese through his ministry.

CUMULATIVE GIVING - FOUNDATION LEGACY SOCIETY RELIGIOUS LEADER LEVEL
Fr. Joseph Scholten
Fr. Joseph Scholten is the current chaplain at O’Gorman High School and is also an O’Gorman graduate himself. Fr. Scholten graduated from O’Gorman High School in 2009 before attending the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, where he received his undergraduate degree. He then went on to pursue the priesthood at the Pontifical North American College in Rome and was ordained a priest in 2017. Fr. Scholten remembers back to his time at O’Gorman and reflects on the people from the school that influenced him to pursue priesthood. “I was blessed with some good examples of priests and seminarians in my life and that made a difference. I wasn’t always 100% set on it (priesthood) and was actually not really strong in my faith at first. But just through the influence of really good people around my sophomore and junior year (of high school) there were some big changes in my life and that kind of opened me up to this possibility. Maybe my plan for my life isn’t as good or fulfilling as I think it’s going to be. Maybe I’m a part of a bigger plan and that’s where happiness and meaning come from,” said Fr. Scholten. Now he gets to spread God’s message at the same school that instilled those values in him. “There’s been a great openness and excitement to have an alumnus back as a priest. And I’m really happy to contribute to this place that really formed me. That was probably the most pivotal time in my life. Where I went through the biggest change just coming to faith and so I’m just happy to work with kids that are in a similar position. I consider it a blessing and a privilege to serve them, to work with them, to help bring a little bit more light into their life by introducing them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I don’t have any of the answers but I can point to the One that does. And every time I am able to do that for our kids it brings me a lot of joy,” said Fr. Scholten. Due to the school closures from the pandemic this year, Fr. Scholten had to get creative on how to connect with students. Beginning in mid-March, the pandemic caused schools to close which meant students would be learning remotely from home for the remainder of the school year. This also meant no Wednesday Mass celebrations at the school every week. “Each week, the Eucharist centers our school on Christ. When we moved to distance learning in March, a few teachers asked if I would be willing to livestream a Mass at the same time as our normal Mass on Wednesdays, to help us retain some normalcy and to keep our focus on the Lord. Of course, online Mass wasn’t the same as the real thing. I certainly wish we could have celebrated these liturgies in person - especially milestones like the National Honor Society Mass, Senior Awards Mass and, of course, graduation—yet I am inspired by the generosity and creativity that this weekly gesture unleashed,” said Fr. Scholten. Faith guidance for the students at O’Gorman is a high priority for the school and Fr. Scholten says that it is one of his biggest goals while acting as the high school chaplain. “I think I would be doing a great job if everybody left this school knowing how much Christ loves them and desiring to give their lives to him in return,” said Fr. Scholten. He hopes to lead students to Christ and knows none of that would be possible without our many wonderful and incredibly generous donors.

Robert “Bob” Denny Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools lost one of its biggest advocates and supporters this year. Robert “Bob” Denny sadly passed away this spring. Bob and his wife, Jane, were passionate about Catholic education and especially loved O’Gorman High School. Bob started volunteering for the school back in the 70s when his kids were attending O’Gorman, and he never quit even after his kids had moved on from the school. His first son, Bob Jr., graduated in 1977 and his second son, Mike, in 1978. A very familiar face around the school, Bob would run the clocks and scorebooks at all of the home basketball games and ran the scoreboard for all home football games. He used his incredible mathematical expertise to help keep the most detailed and precise high school athletic records and statistics in the state. O’Gorman’s records on our website would not exist had it not been for Bob’s incredible attention to detail. While O’Gorman paid Bob for his extensive bookkeeping of the athletic records, he never actually accepted a single dime. Instead, he donated the money to tuition assistance to help kids whose families were struggling with tuition costs. He was always helping kids to ensure as many as possible were able to attend this wonderful school. Bob’s passion for O’Gorman also extended to some time working in the Development Office in the 1990’s, managing the massive database and helping with large mailings. As the keeper of the athletic records, Bob was the perfect person to serve on the Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee, where each year he provided excellent details on each nominated athlete, team or coach so that the committee could make well-informed decisions. Bob was always willing to help, donate, support and advocate for O’Gorman. He has been a treasure to the O’Gorman community for decades. His memory will live on and his presence on our campus will truly missed!

Michelle Shields
Michelle Shields graduated from O’Gorman High School in 1990 before she went on to the University of St. Thomas. There she earned her BA in Theology and Secondary Education and later went on to receive an MA in Educational Administration from USD. She began teaching theology at O’Gorman High School in 1996 and in 2017 she made the transition from high school theology teacher to St. Mary Elementary principal. “Throughout my years at O’Gorman High School, I assumed a variety of leadership positions that helped prepare me for the next step in my career. Being the co-director of Faculty Faith Formation and Freshmen Unity Day, along with mentoring new teachers and training teachers on technology applications for the classroom, gave me a taste of how I could impact schools as an administrator,” says Michelle. She was encouraged by Dr. Tom Lorang, who was superintendent at the time, to pursue her degree in administration and play a more active role in creating a positive climate and culture in our schools. The community and culture of the schools is something that has always stuck with Michelle from when she was a student. “After graduating from O’Gorman High School, my goal was to return to teach here, because even as a student, I recognized how special this community was. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is like a second home to me,” said Michelle. She said the most important part of the culture is the aspect of faith. “Being a theology teacher at heart, I feel that being able to share our faith, by praying with one another and helping our students grow in their relationship with God is the most important component of who we are,” said Michelle. Michelle’s favorite part of working for the school system is the connections she makes. “I enjoy connecting with students, parents and staff. We are a family who cares for one another and supports each other in all of our endeavors. I love visiting the classrooms and seeing the teachers engage with the students. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has the most dedicated and innovative educators, which became very apparent during the distance online learning process when our teachers completely transformed their lessons to digital platforms. Even though they weren’t physically present in the classroom, the teachers ensured that the students were receiving quality instruction every day,” said Michelle. This year, St. Mary Elementary was one of three schools in the system, along with St. Katharine Drexel Elementary and O’Gorman Junior High, to receive the National Blue Ribbon School Award from the US Department of Education. “St. Mary has a tradition of excellence and I was so happy that the teachers and students could be recognized for their hard work. With this distinction, we have a responsibility to continually provide a caring, supportive, safe and academically robust learning environment,” said Michelle.

Tom Price
Tom Price is a highly recognized name and face among many O’Gorman alumni. Tom has been a math teacher at O’Gorman Junior High since 1999. He also has been involved in many extracurricular activities with the schools such as assistant coach for the O’Gorman High School varsity football team as well as a coach for the junior high’s track and field team. He has also been a Eucharistic Minister at OGJH Masses for many years. Tom started his career in teaching in northern South Dakota before coming to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Tom taught at Groton, Grant-Deuel and Clear Lake school districts. He then moved to Sioux Falls in 1991 to marry his wife, Pat, who is a 1974 O’Gorman High School graduate. He taught for 5 years in Garretson and then 3 years in Parker. When he heard about the position that opened up at O’Gorman Junior High he called in every favor he had to get an interview. He was very adamant about landing the job as his wife had always mentioned what a good school O’Gorman was. He was ecstatic to land the job and have the opportunity to teach mathematics full time. “I taught for 14 years before I went back to school in order to get my Middle School Endorsement in math. I have never had as much fun in teaching, as I do now, being able to work in the math department. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools gave me a chance to do that full-time. The staff that I have had the ability to work with, is tremendous,” said Tom. “I have genuinely enjoyed my time in the junior high. I work with people who truly care about the students they see daily. We as teachers are blessed that our students have a tremendous amount of parental support. Education is very important to them, so they make sure their children are taking advantage of the opportunities they are given.” O’Gorman offers a culture and community like none other. It creates a community of support and faith to help students reach their full potential. “This system does turn into a family. From the time our students start school, they know regardless of where they live, they will grow up to become Knights!” said Tom. Part of that culture is our ability to put Christ first in everything we do. Tom and his wife have also been strong supporters of the schools over the years. They know how important the fundraising efforts for the school are. “Paying that tuition can be a financial hardship for many. The more dollars that can be included in endowments and scholarships, will hopefully lighten the load for those parents who are struggling in order to pay the tuition. I would like to thank all of those people who include Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools with their donations. Because of you, many students will be able to attend because of the decreased cost. Over the past several years, there has been a concerted effort to increase the pay for the teachers as well, in order to become more competitive with the public schools,” said Tom. These initiatives are imperative to the schools success. Without our donors, our schools would never be what they are today.

Evan & Kristin Hermanson Evan and Kristin (Wenande) Hermanson are both 1993 O’Gorman High School graduates. Both were incredibly bright students that went on to become doctors. Evan is an Orthopedic Surgeon working at the Orthopedic Institute and Kristin is an Ob/Gyn working at Sanford. They have three children together all of which attend Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Their daughter Kyra is an O’Gorman Junior High student and their sons, Asher and Chase, attend Holy Spirit Elementary. When considering where to send their children to school, it was an obvious choice for them. “For us it was an easy decision to send our children to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. We both had such an amazing experience in terms of not only the education but the relationships that we still enjoy today. It is such a unique place not only in this area but probably in the entire country,” said Evan. Kristin and Evan both highly valued the education they received and the relationships they formed while attending O’Gorman. “We loved the faith-based education as it laid the groundwork for our development. We also know that the academic discipline required to achieve success in college, medical school and beyond started at O’Gorman,” said Evan. The Heramansons continue to be strong supporters of the school system and are involved in both the foundation and serve on the Institutional Advancement Committee as well as donating to many of the fundraising initiatives. “It has been important to our family to support Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools because not only is it a way of saying thank you to the institution and teachers, but it also helps ensure future generations will benefit from the same great education we know we were fortunate to experience,” said Evan.

William and Valerie Schroeder William “Bill” and Valerie Schroeder are longtime supporters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. All three of their children attended Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and have always had a deep appreciation for what the schools are able to offer. All three of their children, Phil ‘82, Lynn ‘85, and Leah ‘88, each graduated from O’Gorman High School. They did very well for themselves with high academic performances in and following high school and now all have prosperous jobs. Bill and Valerie attribute this to the high quality of education their children received at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools along with the faith guidance which kept them on the right path for life. Bill is originally from Nebraska and Valerie is originally from Minnesota. When they moved to Sioux Falls and started sending their children to our schools, they were immersed into the community and culture of the schools early on. This inspired them and made them want to be lifetime supporters of this wonderful organization. They have a desire to show their support and firmly believe in the schools’ mission. With a heavy emphasis on supporting teachers, as they are so important to the mission and because of the organization within Catholic education, the Schroeders have made a considerable impact for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools over the years. They established an endowment fund with the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation to support the teacher salary initiative to help fund the backbone of our schools. Valerie was a teacher but has since retired. She taught at both public and Catholic schools and she says the difference between them is immeasurable. Since Valerie began her career as a teacher, they have found lasting ways to support others who have chosen that profession by starting an endowment fund for teachers’ salaries. They hope to be able to create an opportunity for the schools to attract top teaching talent in the classrooms and support the academic excellence the schools strive for in its students. Their passion for supporting our schools combined with their incredible generosity have made a tremendous impact on Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools staff and students and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Reece Arbogast ‘21
Reece is an incoming senior at O’Gorman High School. He has attended Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools since kindergarten. He is involved in a number of activities including baseball, basketball and volunteering. “I try to go out in the community and help with younger athletic groups. I’ve helped with my friends’ little brothers. I help Coach Robey with the summer camps with the younger kids,” said Reece. His favorite activity is baseball. Reece’s favorite subject in school is math. “That’s just been something that has always come to me naturally. I enjoy working with numbers and that’s what I’m going to do in college,” said Reece. He hopes to attend SDSU to play baseball and major in mathematical education. His career goals are to become a high school math teacher and coach. His interest in mathematical education was influenced heavily by a couple of his high school math teachers at O’Gorman High School, Ken Lindemann and BJ Keppen. “I had Mr. Lindemann my freshman year. He was just really awesome. Having him for advanced geometry and I just really liked learning from him and his passion for what he teaches. Mr. Keppen I worked with him a lot with the basketball team and he has just been awesome to see what he does day in and day out,” said Reece. Reece most enjoys the people he gets to spend time with at the school while attending O’Gorman High School. “We just have really good people in the building and everyone is always looking out for each other and it’s just one big community that we have. It’s just really great to be around everyone here,” said Reece. He believes it’s the schools culture which sets it apart from other schools. “The people that came through here and donate here, they have all given us so many resources to use and with all the good people around all of us, it makes it really easy to focus on school and extracurriculars. It’s just a really good environment,” said Reece. Reece feels that Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has prepared him very well for life ahead. “Accountability and being persistent and all that kind of stuff. It’s definitely challenging here and being able to have all those things challenging me and it just makes me better and prepares me more for what’s going on. Just the classes that we offer here. There’s such a wide variety of things that you can take and things that can challenge you. And I think that’s just really prepared me where I put a lot on my plate and it makes me better and more prepared for what I’m going to do later in life,” said Reece. That’s all thanks to our donors.

Avera has been a strong supporter of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for many years. Through the “Building on Excellence” partnership between Avera and Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, our schools have been fortunate to make many much-needed facility upgrades in addition to supporting teacher salary initiatives and educational programs and activities. The relationship continues with the “Moving Forward with Excellence” partnership which furthers the development of all of those areas. This year, O’Gorman Junior High had the opportunity to tour Avera Specialty Hospital and the new Avera Human Performance Center. The students learned about various aspects of the healthcare industry, including the on-the-job and on-going procedures that take place there. A full tour was provided at both facilities and the students were able to experience something different than a typical day in the classroom. At the Avera Human Performance Center, they were able to learn about state-of-the-art training that many of today’s premier athletes must do to be competitive and to recover from sports-related injuries.
These in-person and hands-on experiences are truly what create an interest for students and reach them in a way that gets them excited when thinking about their futures. “I don’t like reading books. I’m more of a hands-on learner. I like labs and that kind of stuff much better than reading a book,” said OGJH student, Klaire Oehlke. Students say they thoroughly enjoyed their experience. There was an application process prior to going on the trip, so those students who attended already had a real desire to learn more about the healthcare field. They came away from the experience with an even greater appreciation and passion for the healthcare industry.
“As a proud Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools alumni, I have experienced firsthand the tremendous education and learning environment that the schools provide to so many in our communities. Avera is a health ministry rooted in the Gospel which is similar to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools mission to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence. By engaging with students, Avera hopes to shine a light on our health ministry and the role Catholicism plays in the health care setting. In addition, we know that our future workforce is currently making decisions on what to do after high school, so providing opportunities for youth to experience a health care setting and the roles within it is important to us. Career exploration starts early—and enlightening students with what health care career paths are available is helpful in allowing them to begin setting goals and exploring paths for their future. Considering both of our organizations are ministries of the Catholic Church, there is harmony in collaboration and shared values.” David Flicek ‘81 President & CEO of Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center Thank you to Avera for providing our students with such a great experience and for your continued support of our schools and its students!

Expressions of Gratitude! At the start of the school closures this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools administrators put in place a Grab-N-Go meal program to ensure students were still getting proper nutrition. These meals were offered every weekday from mid-March through the end of the school year to students and their families free of charge. Each day, staff prepped and packaged breakfast and lunch meals that were available for pick-up at the junior high. Hundreds of meals were given out every week to help those struggling due to the hardships brought on by the pandemic. Students and families that came to pick up meals were so grateful for the helpful resource being offered. One family even brought daily artwork created by their three children as a way to say thank you to our staff for providing the meals. Every day, the three kids each presented a piece of artwork to the staff when they came to pick up their meals for the day. They were so excited to greet our staff, give them their artwork and express their gratitude. Thank you to all the staff that put so much hard work into making this resource available to our families during these trying times! Your effort and graciousness is truly appreciated by many.
