Our Mission ...to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence. What a great year to be part of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community! There is much to be thankful for and I am honored to have been able to serve as board chair this past year. There were many great accomplishments including state championships, five National Merit Finalists, 58 seniors graduating with a 4.0 or higher grade point average and O’Gorman High School being selected as a National Blue Ribbon School Award for the fourth time was truly a highlight. One of the main focuses for the school board and administration has been to build upon the great Catholic identity we have within all eight of our schools. Thanks to Bishop DeGrood and the initiative implemented by the Diocese to make us all “Lifelong Missionary Disciples through God’s Love,” Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools was given a great gift this past year by having the Pro Ecclesia Sancta religious community be part of our schools. Their presence in our schools, ministering to students and faculty, organizing retreats and many other works done during the year has been an incredible blessing. We are so grateful for their witness as we continue to help our students and staff develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. We have been blessed to have Bishop DeGrood and our parish priests actively involved in Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. The spiritual and religious support they provide to our students and staff has been invaluable this year as we all continue to strive to keep Christ at the center of all we do. Finally, we are appreciative of the families of all eight of our Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. We are grateful for the many sacrifices you make to allow your children to receive the best Catholic education in this region. Thank you and God bless,

Matt Mueller Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board Chair

From the Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls Dear Friends, Parents and Supporters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, When thinking about education, images of students strengthening their minds come to the forefront. It is not a difficult leap to further contemplate images of students strengthening the body, as so many students participate in school activities that foster physical development or agility. These are both true aspects of education, but for Catholics, they alone are not enough. The benefit we have as a Catholic school system, which sets us apart, is that we focus not only on the growing minds and physical health of our students, but also their growth in virtue and holiness. God has called us all to be saints. Above all else, this is our aim as a Catholic school system: to form great saints. Mind, body and soul, all three of these facets of the person are integrated. The balance of the three is uniquely harmonized at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Faith formation must be a part of every class, every day, in every building. The activities offered encourage our students to use their bodies to excel with the gifts God has given them. The academic curriculum fosters a sense of wonder and a desire to dig deeper into the academic world. And, we pray, the Spirit of God permeates it all, urging us all to the heights of holiness! As you read through this year’s annual report, you will see how the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools System caters to the whole person, our students’ body, mind and soul. May God bless each of you for the contributions you have made in support of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. In the love of the Lord,

Most Reverend Donald E. DeGrood Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls

From the President of Bishop O†Gorman Catholic Schools

Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends,

It is with sincere gratitude that we share with you Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ Annual Report for 2021-2022. Your generous support of our students is truly inspiring. Thank you for choosing to partner with administrators, educators, staff members, alumni, parents and friends in the vital mission of Catholic education. By sharing your gifts of time, talent and treasure with our students, you have made a direct, lasting and positive impact upon their lives. As the ultimate beneficiaries of your generosity, our students and staff are truly grateful for your kindness and support. We provide our students with the best environment in which to grow in mind, body and spirit. As a result of our dedicated faculty and staff, our students experience a secure, warm and welcoming community, retreat programs, spiritual formation, award-winning theater programs, championship-level athletics, as well as clubs and organizations that truly distinguish our amazing students and schools. We work tirelessly to offer every student, regardless of background, an invitation into a relationship with Christ, while at the same time giving opportunities, accompaniment and accountability to students who are seeking more in their faith journey. Our mission “…to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence” is alive in our schools through the actions of our students and staff. We were blessed with the arrival of the Pro Ecclesia Sancta (PES) community within our schools this past school year. The sisters and brothers of PES have supported and strengthened our mission. As missionary disciples of God’s love, our students continually receive an invitation to a deeper relationship with Christ so that they can continue growing as disciples. Coming alongside a Catholic way of life and Gospel values is academic excellence. In the fall of 2021, O’Gorman High School was recognized for the fourth time as a National Blue Ribbon School. A tremendous accomplishment which reinforces the well-rounded Catholic education our students receive.

You have made all of this possible. Our challenge today is to continue the tradition of ensuring excellence for years to come. We strive to preserve and expand our mission, Catholic identity, academic excellence and co-curricular programs, while providing an educational program that is accessible to all, regardless of their family financial status. Finally, I want to thank you for your investment in the 2,600 students of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. You are in my prayers of thanksgiving every day for all that you have done and continue to do for our Knights Family!

May God continue to bless you and your family,

Kyle L. Groos

From the Director of Development

“How did you hear about us?” This is a question so many retailers and businesses ask. In the business world, word of mouth is the absolute best source of advertising. When my family and I moved to Sioux Falls in 2020, we relied on other people’s recommendations for so many things: where to get our oil changed, best restaurants, family doctors and dentists, who should cut our hair, and so much more. Sending our children to Catholic school was never a question, it was a sure thing. We moved from a smaller community and knew the transition to a large public school would be difficult for our girls. Bishop O’Gorman Schools’ reputation was already known to us. In the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ Annual Report for 2021-2022, you will read about families and individuals who share the impact the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has had on them. Their stories tell how the education and community of faith has drawn them closer to each other and become a valuable resource in their life I am grateful for the opportunity to work with all of the families, businesses and donors who recognize the value that is the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. I am looking forward to growing personally, professionally, and spiritually because of the generous impact you have on Catholic education in Sioux Falls.

s t n e d u t S g Connectin l a n o s r e P r i with the y e n r u o J h t Fai “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” Romans 15:13. This year the students of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools were encouraged to find joy and security in their faith while also developing their skills as future Catholic leaders. Thanks to help from the Pro Ecclesia Sancta Sisters, as well as a younger generation of priests, our faculty have been able to grow these retreat options that inspire our students to grow. “Rejoice in the Lord Always” was the theme for the fifth grade retreat that gathered all Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools fifth grade students for a day retreat at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Sr. Eileen—a member of the Pro Ecclesia Sancta—helped organize and facilitate the retreat. She said that while they had a lot of fifth graders, the help from the junior high and the high school allowed the students to engage more and see the spiritual leadership of their peers. Sr. Eileen praised the children’s behavior, “The fifth graders are so good. They’re so easy. When you say jump, they jump, when you say pray, they pray.” A goal of Sr. Eileen was to help the fifth graders find security in their faith. “If they can experience that security in God, they bring that everywhere they go, even though they’re going to be in a secular place or a more challenging place, but they know that there is security and strength and a joy that comes from God.” 8

Fr. Klein, chaplain for O’Gorman Junior High, helped with the first seventhgrade lock-in. “We thought it was a great success.” With the help of eighthgrade students, the event was attended by more than 60 students. Retreats help the faculty and staff get to know the students on a more personal level. “For them to have fun in the presence of their religion teachers, sisters, a priest and the religious brothers gives them a view of the joy that comes from finding your vocation. So, if nothing else, I look at that as a success.”

Junior high students often get over looked. It can be an awkward age and many are unsure as they start to explore where they belong in the world. Mr. Krueger believes that these retreats can help the students move through this difficult stage. Through these retreats, small group meetings, and time with adults who have chosen a different path in life, can show them that God is on their side. God doesn’t need them to fit a carefully constructed mold in order to be loved. Mr. Krueger said, “Their little crises that they go through, are huge to them and they just need some time of silence where they can be themselves. I think when it comes to education, it’s not just getting A’s and learning stuff. World view, who they are as people, character, I think this has added that to everyone.” Molly Johnson, an eighth grader at O’Gorman Junior High agreed, “I like getting away from the stress of school and spending time sharing my faith with my friends. I always feel stronger when I can spend some time growing in my faith.”

Seventh grader, Hadley Wagner, agreed with Fr. Klein that there was joy in the lock-in. She said, “I really loved the candlelight service! It was really beautiful. I had a lot of fun playing glow-in-the-dark hide and seek with my friends. It was pretty cool to have the sisters, brothers and Fr. Klein join in.”

ed the v o l y l l a e r I “ rvice! e s t h g i l e l d can y It was reall beautiful.” - Hadley Wagner, OGJH

The feeling that faith is joyful was also present at the eighth grade retreat this year. Mr. Zach Krueger, theology campus minster at O’Gorman High School helped facilitate the retreat said, “The theme was trying to show them that Church is not just a bunch of rules. Things like joy is the goal, that God wants us to be happy.” They spent the day in adoration, learning new ways to pray, attending confession and break into small groups. There were so many students who wanted to go to confession that there were more student confessions than there were priests to handle the demand.

9

Mr. Brian Stai, the campus ministry coordinator for O’Gorman High School, feels that with new opportunities in front of them, students are delving deeper into their faith while also growing their leadership skills. Last fall, the high school students had the option of attending an overnight retreat at Broom Tree Retreat Center. More than 100 students and a couple dozen chaperones converged at the retreat center to take a step away from the hectic and sometimes overwhelming world of academics. Mr. Stai feels that these occasional steps away from academic life can be beneficial for students in the long run. - Dominic Johnson, OGHS

“The word retreat is to step back… it’s nice to step out to a familiar or unfamiliar place that’s just not tied to the emotion of the everyday grind. We all need that, to get into a new headspace.” said Mr. Stai. Dominic Johnson, an eleventh grader at O’Gorman High Schools says, “The retreats happen at the perfect time of the school year, early in the year… and at the end. They come just at a time when stressors are high and we need some peace. They allow us to re-center our focus on faith and our relationship with God. I feel so much happier after retreats. I have more energy and can tackle everyday life so much better when my relationship with God is strong.”

10

During the retreat, older students were given the opportunity to speak to the younger students in large group settings. Two of the young women who participated spoke about faith and friendship. In the months that have followed the retreat, around 13 groups of students have continued their small group meetings every other week during their lunches. Mr. Stai guides older students on how to lead before allowing the students to take on the responsibility of leading their group.

“Who helps with the fifth graders? The eighth graders. Who helps with the seventh graders? The high schoolers. Something we want to always be intentional about is always having Catholic leaders,” said Sr. Eileen. She felt they took that role very seriously and had a new appreciation for their teachers saying, “Teachers are like saints!”

With the help of strong teachers, staff, priests, sisters and brothers, the students learn to take a step away from the chaos of everyday life to develop leadership skills they can carry with them as they get older, and to grow a deeper relationship with God. All of these benefits help further the mission of Catholic education.

The continued development of the students’ faith lives is an integral part of the Catholic education that students receive when attending Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Fr. Klein said, “As a Catholic school, in our own mission we attest to that. We are doing more than just forming a brain, being a school, we are forming a mind… a whole person, and that’s an important aspect of this. We are forming a whole person.”

Fr. Klein put it best talking about the importance of the retreats and helping connect the students with their personal faith journey. “It’s not just a school with a crucifix on the wall; it’s a school where the crucifix on the wall means something.”

On seeing the leadership of the students, Mr. Stai said, “I think that’s one of the things that I’m most proud of is seeing our students take that level of leadership. It really holds them to, ‘are they personally living the faith in their life?’ People see that and the underclassmen aren’t going to respect you if this is something you only do during the school day but outside of school you’re a totally different person. It’s a different level of accountability.” All of these retreats provide opportunities for the students to grow as faith leaders.

Fr. Charles (Chuck) Cimpl grew up in Tabor, a small town near Yankton, SD. His grandfather immigrated from the former Czechoslovakia when he was 17 years old with a dream and a sausage recipe. He started selling sausages in small locations, eventually consolidating those into Cimpl Meats in Yankton, SD. The plant employed approximately 130 people and Fr. Cimpl worked in the plant during the summer while he was in college. His uncle Laddie Cimpl, who is also his Godfather, was president of the packing plant and wondered if Chuck would one day be interested in being part of the Cimpl Packing Plant family. As it turned out, Chuck had other interests. Fr. Cimpl attended a small Catholic grade school in Tabor that went from first to eighth grade and was taught by the Benedictine Sisters from Yankton. “At that time, I really wanted to be in politics or a senator,” said Fr. Cimpl. In 1965, Fr. Cimpl attended the World’s Fair in New York with his family. He met a number of children from various states and around the world. He appreciated his Catholic education in grade school and he and his parents were hoping he could attend a Catholic high school. Upon return, Fr. Cimpl’s family considered O’Gorman High School and, unfortunately, learned they were not accepting additional enrollments. He soon learned he could join the minor seminary, located in the current O’Gorman Junior High building. There were a number of eight graders from around the Diocese attending an informational session on the seminary. Fr. Cimpl was soon discouraged when Fr. Al Krzyzopolski and Msgr. Andraschko asked, “How many of you like tv, radio or girls?” in an attempt to dissuade those who truly didn’t want to attend seminary. Fr. Cimpl returned to Tabor that same night to explore other options. Fr. Cimpl’s family had a cousin attending Notre Dame High School in Mitchell, which was run by the Presentation Sisters. He was interested in attending school there, but no dorms were available. A priest friend of the family put a housing ad in the bulletin for Fr. Cimpl. A parishioner offered her basement apartment to Fr. Cimpl and he moved in. 28

“There was no school lunch or cafeteria. The building was bad, but the sisters all had master’s degrees and they were great teachers,” recalls Fr. Cimpl. “When I was a junior at Notre Dame, the school ran out of money and they were going to close. A bunch of kids went to the school board to see how much money they needed to keep it open. The school board told them they needed $40,000.” One of the students in Fr. Cimpl’s class had a dad that owned a car dealership. He donated a pickup for them to auction off. In one night, the students canvased all of Mitchell, sold raffle tickets at $1 per ticket and came up with $42,000. The school board kept the school open for one more year, but informed the students that was the best they could do. The school closed after Fr. Cimpl graduated that year. Upon graduation, Fr. Cimpl planned to attend college at Creighton University to purse a law degree. However, Fr. Bream approached him and asked if he’d ever thought abought being a priest. Fr. Cimpl had said no at the time, but it stuck in his head. As Fr. Cimpl continued to ponder the idea he rejected only four years earlier, Fr. Bream drove him to Sioux Falls to meet with Bishop Hoch who encouraged him to try the seminary before he went off to Creighton. Fr. Cimpl decided to enroll at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, MN, in the fall of 1970. In 1977, Fr. Cimpl was assigned to St. Mary’s in Dell Rapids as a transitional deacon where he worked as a substitute for a religion teacher who was on maternity leave. Fr. Cimpl had no teaching experience, but decided to help out and loved it. After he was ordained in 1978, Bishop Hoch assigned him to O’Gorman High School as a full-time teacher. Fr. Cimpl taught six classes a day for 11 years. For seven years, he lived in the business offices at the high school prior to the renovation . He was then moved to the current band room of the junior high where he lived for an additional two years. While at O’Gorman, Fr. Cimpl had many roles. He was a teacher, assistant to the principal, development staff member, chaplain for nine years and a member of the school board—even serving as president in 1984. “I also ran the cheerleading program for a year and that was a complete disaster! Every time there was a job that no one else wanted to do, I usually took it on,” he laughed. He has fond memories of Sunday nights at the school. Fr. Cimpl recalled, “The kids would need books to get their homework done, so I would open the school for them and have kids and families hanging out until 10:00 pm.” Fr. Cimpl went from O’Gorman to SDSU where he was the Newman Director from 1989 until 1994. After that, he was pastor for St. Therese, St. Michael and most recently Holy Spirit. When asked if he had a favorite, he said, “I definitely could have stayed at O’Gorman, but I knew that wasn’t possible. SDSU was probably the easiest because it had its own funding and it was fun to be around the college students. I remember thinking, ‘I bet this job isn’t going to last because it was almost too good to be true.’” He remembers Bob Burns, coach and founder of the Dakota Bowl, saying, “We can’t think of ourselves as being little, we need to think of ourselves as being the best!” Bob would inspire the faculty and get them motivated by telling them we don’t have to have the best stadium, buses or equipment. We just have to be better than everyone else and that stuck with Fr. Cimpl loved singing Fr. Cimpl and the rest of the faculty. and playing his guitar “PB” for many of our students. Fr. Cimpl recently reitired after 44 years in the priesthood. He is enjoying his new downtown loft, which overlooks Falls Park. He would love to help those in need To watch a special video and maybe come back to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. He will be message from Fr. Cimpl as well as going on a pilgrimage next summer to France, Spain and Portugal. He is him singing a few of those favorite tunes he played for the kids, just scan looking forward to traveling and would love to see Australia and China! the QR code with your smart device. Fr. Cimpl has been a beloved priest for many years and we wish him blessings on his retirement. 29

Therefore, the minimum investment return needs to be sufficient to offset spending and expenses. • Social and moral guidelines will be followed to avoid investing in companies whose activities either generate a profit or promote social change that conflict with teachings of the Catholic Church. “Attending a Catholic school added more depth and engagement to my education. It showed me time and time again that there is something more to life; that learning and incorporating God is not just a strange school requirement, but a necessary connection. I also found that attending a Catholic school pushed my academics and revealed my own intrinsic motivation to learn.” - Julia Salter ’22

BISHOP LEVEL Bishop Donald Kettler Bishop Donald Kettler’s roots in Sioux Falls run deep in the Catholic community. He grew up as part of the old “North Ender Boys” living between 1st and 2nd Street on North Walts. He says, at that time, going to Cathedral for school was just what you did. Bishop Kettler attended St. Joseph Cathedral until the eighth grade when he entered a prep school for those discerning the priesthood. His Catholic education continued through college and into ordination. Catholic education has been important to Bishop Kettler because of how impactful it has been on his own personal spirituality, specifically his own relationship with God. The value he placed on Catholic education led to a deeper conversation regarding unity and cooperation during his time as rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph. At the time there were two Catholic junior high schools, St. Mary Junior High and the Cathedral Junior High. He broached the topic of why there was not a single Catholic junior high school for the whole city. He stated, “Why compete with each other? You want to work together, you can share faculty, curriculum, consistent tuition. Working together, cooperating and not competing is so important and then you learn from each other too.” Bishop Kettler worked with the committee to merge Cathedral Junior High with St. Mary Junior High and eventually, in 1991, establishing a unified Sioux Falls Catholic School System. After serving as rector of the Cathedral, he was pastor of St. Lambert Parish and then Christ the King Parish. In June of 2002, Bishop Kettler was appointed to be bishop of Fairbanks, Alaska, by Pope John Paul II and in 2013 he was appointed bishop of Saint Cloud by Pope Francis. In Saint Cloud, Bishop Kettler has continued his passion for instilling unity in Catholic schools. One of the benefits of merging Catholic schools within the same diocese is sharing the financial responsibility across the schools and parishes. Bishop Kettler says Catholic education has changed over the years; we no longer see as many sisters, brothers and religious clergy as faculty. Now we see a large number of lay people in the schools. One of the biggest challenges of this change is ensuring that the teachers have the salaries and benefits they need and deserve. “It’s a lot more expensive nowadays,” he added. When Bishop Kettler was in school, tuition was nearly free, there were only book fees. Bishop Kettler still believes there’s a real benefit to Catholic education. “Being able to live by and practice principles that we believe in, practice what our faith teaches us, we learn to do that better. We can bring in some really good strong principles that we can live by, get to the sacraments regularly as part of our school day. We have so much more to offer.” Bishop Kettler continued, “We’re not just here to get kids ready for a college education, but to grow the faith in our young people so they are disciples. I mean that’s what it’s all about.”

Cumulative Giving Levels RELIGIOUS LEADER LEVEL Fr. Paul Rutten Fr. Paul Rutten is no stranger to living a Catholic life. As the sixth of nine children, Fr. Paul grew up on the north end of Sioux Falls where he attended Cathedral from preschool through eight grade before graduating from O’Gorman High School in 1992. He jokes, “I was surrounded by Catholics, I grew up with them. I don’t think I had a non-Catholic friend until I got to high school. There was no one in my world that wasn’t Catholic.” After high school, Fr. Paul went to SDSU to obtain an engineering degree. During his senior year at SDSU, he decided that engineering may not be the path for him. He transferred to University of St. Thomas to finish his engineering degree and begin his seminarian studies. When asked what changed his mind he simply said, “I had done everything I had wanted to do at that point and there was still something missing. So, I gave God a chance at the possibility of the priesthood.” After completing his education and ordination, Fr. Paul served at St Mary’s in Aberdeen (2002-2004), Pius XII Newman Center in Brookings (2004-2009), Vocations Director (2009-2013) for the Diocese, Immaculate Conception in Watertown (2013-2019) and is currently at St. Mary Parish in Sioux Falls (since 2019). Fr. Paul says there have been good things about every assignment. He admits though that his time as Vocations Director was probably the hardest because he really had no parish. One aspect of the priesthood that Fr. Rutten cherishes is the ability to connect with families. “People don’t fully understand the gift of a priest being a part of your family.” During his priesthood, Fr. Paul has helped numerous families through both the highs and lows of life. “A great blessing is walking with people during an incredible tragedy, to try and help them the best I can. You just never forget them.” He loves becoming an asset to all families, not just his own. Fr. Paul felt his calling early in his life and can remember it influencing his time as a student in the Catholic school system. “I never understood why you wouldn’t just go to daily mass over study hall.” He appreciated the opportunity that O’G offered to students. Even with feeling the call at a young age, he still had initial reservations. He remembered thinking that he would be different if he became a priest and he didn’t want to be different. Fr. Paul said, “I don’t like to be in front of people and talk. That is a problem if you want to be a priest.” He remembers thinking that maybe this isn’t going to work for him. He laughed, “How can you be a priest if you don’t like to speak in front of people?” He spent a lot of time in seminary working on that. To this day, he would rather be in the middle of a crowd and not say a word. Fr. Paul will be ordained 20 years this summer. “The life of a priest is a great life, because it’s the life that God has called you to.” Fr. Paul says, “God has a good sense of humor, “he brought me back to Sioux Falls, but I’m at St. Mary which was Cathedral’s rival when I was in Junior High.” St. Mary and Cathedral are no longer rivals and Fr. Paul is enjoying the path his life has taken since becoming a priest. “I think there is something about trusting that you are where God wants you to be.”

Cumulative Giving Levels LEGACY LEVEL Paul and Mary Ellen Connelly Paul and Mary Ellen Connelly have been involved in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for almost fifty years. Because of Paul’s experience attending Catholic schools in Minnesota from grade school through university, there was no hesitation that his children would attend Catholic schools. Mary Ellen, raised a Lutheran in Mount Vernon, South Dakota, attended public schools for the majority of her education. “Transitioning into the Catholic school community was a comfortable experience,” she said. “My children’s friends and their parents became my friends.” A chance encounter with a retired O’Gorman teacher and coach inspired the Connelly’s passion for staff salaries. “Our children have encountered world-class teachers in our schools, and I felt they need to be treated as such,” Paul said. The Connelly’s continuously demonstrate their support of Catholic education and teacher salaries. Besides their support of the Tuesday for Teachers fundraiser, they have set up two endowments, The Connelly Family Fund in 2011 through the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School Foundation and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Teacher and Staff Salary Endowment in 2017 through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. “I think there’s a lot of intangibles I’ve received from my education and I’m happy to give to others to ensure a quality education,” Paul said. Paul believes that the most important part of creating a quality education for students is ensuring they have the best teachers. Teachers change students’ lives. They help them find their way in the world and encourage and challenge them to further their education and careers after high school. To Paul, the impact teachers have on their students cannot be overstated and it is this strongly held belief that has led him to be a champion for the betterment of our teacher salaries. “Teachers play such an important role, they need to be fairly compensated.” Paul emphasizes. Mary Ellen agreed that charitable giving to support teachers’ salaries in Catholic schools is important to both of them, adding, “Attending Catholic schools has become a tradition; like for Paul, it is what he was raised to do. And now many of our grandchildren attend Catholic schools too.” During their children’s time in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School System, Mary Ellen volunteered as room mother and continued volunteering while they attended high school. Their grandchildren have, and continue to attend, the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. She is proud of the exceptional science and music opportunities her grandchildren have had, mentioning four amazing music programs this spring in both elementary and high school. Paul and Mary Ellen Connelly continue to support the world-class teachers who help further the mission of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for their grandchildren and all the families who desire a Catholic education for their children.

Cumulative Giving Levels PRINCIPAL LEADER LEVEL Brenda Mitzel Brenda was born into a Catholic family in Aberdeen, SD, where she attended and graduated from Roncalli High School. She went on to Northern State University for her teaching degree and master’s degree in Elementary Administration then earned her Specialist in K-12 Administration Degree from University of South Dakota. She returned to Roncalli Catholic Schools and spent 25 years of her professional career there as a teacher and principal. Brenda and her husband have four children; Derek and Tyson graduated from Roncalli High School in 2011 and 2014, respectively, while Eden graduated from O’Gorman High School in 2016. Brenda’s youngest child, Adam, will be a senior at O’Gorman in the fall. Brenda and her family moved to Sioux Falls in 2015. Upon meeting former Sioux Falls Catholic Schools superintendent Dr. Tom Lorang through her Diocesan administrative meetings, she was inspired to apply for the Director of Instruction & Programs position at Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. “I was so honored to be selected to come and serve in that capacity in the [then] Sioux Falls Catholic Schools system,” described Brenda. She has spent the last seven years with Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools as Director of Instruction & Programs where she feels she has the ability to help discover tools that will help the staff and students delve deeper into their faith. “My desire to teach in Catholic schools from the very start was because I desire to help children grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. I couldn’t see myself working in anything other than Catholic education. I so believe in what we do, in our mission of helping children love Christ,” she explained. “I wanted to move into administration because I saw I could have an impact on more people, more children and also the adults that are working with them.” Brenda spends a large part of her days finding new curriculum programs that find a balance between academic proficiency and nurturing students’ faith development. She strives to provide principals and staff with the tools and professional development they need to be successful. Education is constantly changing and Brenda’s efforts help keep the students moving forward. That includes rolling out a new education virtue program in the fall which will help students, preschool through twelfth grade, focus and understand the cardinal values as well as expanding the Catechesis of the Good Shepard program. “We are trying to teach the virtues as well as curriculum,” she noted, “I don’t think there is any price tag that we could put on our children’s salvation or ours. I feel we are growing [in faith] right along with them.”

Cumulative Giving Levels EDUCATOR LEVEL Jeff Gordon There are few people who can claim they stayed with the same job they took straight out of college. Mr. Jeff Gordon is one of those few. At only 21 years old, he accepted the position of history teacher and wrestling coach at O’Gorman High School. The year was 1977 and Mr. Gordon was young enough that the hiring team asked if it was possible for him to grow a mustache. “I grew a mustache until I was twenty-five or so, but I never really liked it. I only grew it to demonstrate that I could!” he said. Fortyfive years later, sans mustache, Mr. Gordon is retiring and moving on to the next stage in life. Mr. Gordon has passion for Catholic education. He, himself, was only able to attend Catholic school from second grade until the end of his freshman year of high school as St. Mary/Notre Dame school system in Mitchell closed before his sophomore year. Missing out on the last few years of Catholic school gave him a real sense of gratitude for what he had earlier in his education. “I have a great appreciation because my experience was taken away from me and I don’t think I appreciated it until it was gone,” said Mr. Gordon. When it came time to send his own children to school in Sioux Falls, the Catholic school system was an easy choice. As he points to the senior class prayer and cross in the classroom, he remarks that faith is something we live every day in our schools and the ability to do so is something to be cherished. As a teacher, he always strived to maintain Gospel values in his classroom. One of his goals in teaching was for his students to always be aware they were in a Catholic school. “You just need to come and be in O’G and be around the building and you see it in so many ways,” he explains. Early on in his career, Mr. Gordon says there were what some people referred to as “lifers,” people who would start at O’Gorman and stayed on for many years. He said the reason he chose to stay for so long was that he had a good feeling about the school from the beginning and that good feeling stayed. Mr. Gordon felt there was no real reason to leave saying, “I think sometimes the best decisions that you make are the things you decide not to do.” In forty-five years, Mr. Gordon taught through the Civil Rights movements, the end of the Cold War, Desert Storm, the new millennium, 9/11, the Iraq War, and Covid-19 and a plethora of other historical events. Through it all, he led his students with dignity and grace that has left a lasting impression with the hundreds of students who were fortunate enough to sit in his classroom. After all these years, Mr. Gordon is finally graduating from O’Gorman High School and moving on to the next stage of his life; he will be sorely missed but we wish him all the very best in this next adventure.

Cumulative Giving Levels ALUMNI LEVEL Regan Smith As an alumnus of O’Gorman High School and now a parent of a soon to be seventh grade student, Regan Smith sees many benefits to a Catholic education. “Catholic schools are an extension and re-enforcement of our home and church life with focus on academic results, faith formation and building of strong character,” said Smith. The schools prepare students to be successful in what Smith says can be a “competitive, ever-changing and morally-challenging world.” Smith works as the Emergency Manager for the City of Sioux Falls. In the last five years alone, he has handled tornados, the pandemic and, most recently, a derecho. After the 2019 tornado, Smith worked closely with Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools on clean up, emergency planning and building security. During Covid-19, he met regularly with school nurses and administrators to ensure proper precautions were taken. Even with a busy schedule, Smith has found time over the years to stay involved and volunteer. Steve Metli, a mentor of Smith’s, encouraged him to help with the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl fundraiser, an event that he enjoys because of the community feeling of O’Gorman High School football games. In Smith’s opinion, “It’s the one thing that is very unique to O’G. It brings the whole community together and that’s something special and different for us. You get to see old family and friends; people who are like minded. We’re all here to support O’Gorman.” Many of his extended family have graduated from O’Gorman High School as well. “Much of our success, our happiness, our faith can be traced back to those foundations built right here at O’Gorman,” he stated. We have solid schools in the Sioux Falls area, but what Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools offers is different. “Catholic education differentiates itself through discipline, smaller class sizes, service and an ability to practice our faith. I believe the real advantage we have is the faith, the teachers, families, parishes and students working together in a safe and caring environment, supporting each other and encouraging achievement and spiritual growth. I’m forever grateful for the gift of a Catholic education. It has instilled a passion and responsibility to serve the community, the church and my fellow man.”

Cumulative Giving Levels PATRON LEVEL Todd and Patty Pharis Life has taken Todd and Patty Pharis all over the country. When moving back to Sioux Falls in 1994 from California to start their venture with Pizza Ranch, Patty had one stipulation: their children would to go to O’Gorman High School, a place Patty had her first teaching job right out of college. When Todd asked why, she responded, “I don’t know, there’s something special about that place.” It didn’t take long for Todd to experience the sense of community and faith formation that compelled the Pharises to support the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School system. Over the years they have been generous with both time and resources. Todd appreciates a Catholic education, where his children learned to cultivate a desire to serve others. “What I loved about our boys going here is that we are very big on community service with Pizza Ranch and O’Gorman is so good with community involvement,” said Todd. One of the many committees that Patty served on was for fundraising for the Building on Excellence Campaign which included the remodel of O’Gorman High School. The level of generosity that can be found in the community amazed her. She remembers being nervous about asking for donations, but once she had the list of names to reach out to, she found the fundraising to be surprisingly easy. The sense of community was confirmed through her volunteering and asking for support. It was easy to see, they were not the only family with an affinity to O’Gorman. “The education is amazing, the teachers, the quality of teachers that they get here, they really care for their students,” Patty explained. For the Pharises that sense of belonging did not end when their children all graduated. “The thirty-five years of friendship we have with the staff is just amazing. We still have special relationships with the parents of students who went to school here with our kids. It’s not like you knew them and then move on. You still remain in contact,” continued Todd. The Pharises add that their connection to our schools isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Their son married a fellow O’Gorman graduate, and Todd and Patty are now grandparents. They are looking forward to the next generation of Pharises at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.

Cumulative Giving Levels STUDENT LEVEL Audrey Meyer ‘23 Audrey Meyer began her Catholic school journey in preschool at Holy Spirit Elementary. This fall she will be a senior at O’Gorman High School. “Both my parents are Catholic but never had the opportunity to attend Catholic school and thought it would be a super cool opportunity for my brother and me. They also appreciated the small, community feel they received after visiting the schools,” said Meyer. Audrey is involved in a variety of activities at O’Gorman High School and she competes in a different sport each season. These sports include the competitive hip hop dance team in the fall, gymnastics in the winter and track and field in the spring. Audrey helped lead the gymnastics team to a state championship title this year by breaking a school record with a score of 9.9 on her floor routine. When asked about her success in gymnastics, she humbly said, “It was a team effort and I’m so thankful for them and how we challenged each other.” Audrey also won the 300 meter hurdles at state track meet this spring, setting another school record and helping the girls track and field team win state titles in back-to-back years. Campus ministry is a new addition to Audrey’s activities lineup. Over the last two years, she has been part of the Campus Ministry events team and says it helped her develop a deeper relationship with Christ. “I grew up Catholic but felt like I was just going through the motions. I attended a Campus Ministry event my sophomore year and thought it was cool to be around other kids that aren’t only Catholic, but want to pursue their faith and grow closer to God. I had never seen this before and I wanted to be a part of that!” she added. Audrey is so grateful for the opportunities to grow in her faith and academics at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. She attributes the community and the dedication of her teachers for helping her become so successful. “The community and bonds we share with each other and our teachers at O’Gorman is so special. The teachers really care about each and every one of us. You don’t get brushed under the rug at O’Gorman. When a teacher sees you struggling, they will go out of their way to help you get back on track,” said Meyer. She also believes that the ability to share her faith in the classroom everyday has helped shape her as a person. “I would not be the person I am today without faith being part of my daily life,” she noted. “I love O’Gorman and wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here to finish out my high school career.”

A PARTNERSHIP OF HEALTH AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING

Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools partners with Avera Health Systems to improve the health and physical fitness of our students and staff. Through this partnership, the students have gained a full-time trainer in Colin Fromelt. Colin majored in sports science and kinesiology before interning with Avera in 2015. In the spring of 2018, Colin came to O’Gorman High School with a desire to improve our athletes’ and students’ physical fitness. The partnership began working with the football program but has since expanded. Colin works with a majority of the sports teams at the high school, as well as working with students looking to learn more about their health and physical well-being. Working year-round with in-season sports teams, his summer program offers several camps as young as seventh grade. “The earlier the better as long as you introduce them to movements and patterns and technique the right way.” said Colin. Aaron Strand, cross country and track and field coach, believes that having Colin at the school working with the students is a great benefit for everyone. “Colin puts in a ton of time helping our athletes. I have really seen an improvement in form, strength and technique. Colin is a big bonus to our athletic programs.” Strand commented. Athletes at O’Gorman work with both their coaches and Colin to maximize their athletic ability while minimizing injury. “In weight training, it’s very slow in terms of movement and when you’re out on a court or field or wherever, it’s not slow. You have to be explosive and be able to accelerate, decelerate, change direction and make sure your joints are ready to go,” Colin explained. He believes the lifting and agility training - paired with the practice students have with their coaches - helps make the students better and safer athletes. 66

The partnership between Avera and O’Gorman has remained strong over the years and Colin feels that the partnership makes sense. “The same underlying beliefs which, I believe is important in a partnership, not just with religion but with professionalism. I think that’s been really cool to see a hospital system and a high school working together professionally.” Colin feels that the mission statements of Avera aligns with Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools mission. He sees the staff, who work out alongside the students in the weight room, having the same vision and excitement that he does for the kids. Colin continues to challenge himself and sets goals both in the weight room and personally. Coach Strand said, “Colin has been a big part of the success of our distance runners. They have become stronger and more confident due to Colin’s work.” Both the lady Knights cross country team and track and field team won back-toback state titles. Colin strives to keep a welcoming and judgement-free environment at the gym. He says he sees a lot of students come in to the weight room who would not normally. Once they get started, they branch out and start to talk to other people. Non-athletes are also encouraged to learn more about how to train properly in order to avoid injury. The only requirement is that they follow a specific program Colin puts together to ensure their safety. Having more students working in the gym is one of Colin’s goals. Sophomore Will Heineman placed second at state and national power lifting competitions this past season and agreed that Colin established an inviting atmosphere at the gym. “I would tell someone that it isn’t a scary thing to get involved in. The lifting community and environment is super supportive. Everyone cheers each other on to be the best they can be.” Colin said that his favorite moments in the gym are when kids hit their personal goals. It may not be anything monumental on the field but a small personal victory in the gym is a sight to see.
