FROM THE BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS BOARD CHAIRMAN †
As I sit down to reflect on this past year, I am overwhelmed with the accomplishments and achievements—one of our most notable accomplishments—the transition of our name. We are now a community of nearly 3,000 Knights all attending the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. I want to thank our administrators, volunteers and families who attended and facilitated meetings across the system over the past few years to provide input on this change. Our new name eliminates any geographical restrictions and will be used as a catalyst for growth. We are working to grow our international student presence at our high school. Our student body typically includes 10-20 international students and, by expanding our program, we hope to eventually welcome 30-50 students annually. Our entire student body is enriched by their presence. As an engineer, I enjoy following our O’Gorman Junior High School Robotics Team which has won awards at state, national and international competitions. Programs like this will continue to evolve and expand as we introduce more STEM related instruction in our schools. Our largest challenge as a Board is working to balance enrollment, tuition and the faculty wage gap. Your ongoing prayers and involvement will assist us in meeting these challenges. Our system is blessed to have a strong Bishop, priests, volunteers, administrators, educators and support staff who work tirelessly to deliver a faith-filled educational experience for our students. God’s providence and your prayers have assembled this team. Please continue to support them as they take us into the future. Thank you and may God bless each of you. It has been my privilege to serve as your School Board Chair for the 2018-2019 school year.
Mark Shlanta Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board Chair
FROM THE BISHOP OF THE SIOUX FALLS DIOCESE Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, Since coming to Sioux Falls as the eighth bishop of our diocese in 2006, the leaven that our Catholic schools have provided to local parishes and the wider community has been made clear and is impressive. The academic, athletic, cultural and service achievements of its students reveal their deepening relationship with Jesus Christ that our schools foster. I am grateful to the faculty, administrators, volunteers, benefactors and families for their sacrifices to assure quality education today and to pass on to today’s youth the legacy of faith bequeathed to us by those who went before. The recent name change to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools recognizes the dynamic development in the region and to offer in a prudent way this beautiful gift of faith and education to all in the metropolitan area. Bishop O’Gorman was a visionary who looked to the future with hope, quantified in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, a spiritual and community landmark for over a hundred years. We too are called to be visionaries of hope especially for our youth. A vibrant and effective Catholic school system cannot exist without the support of so many which this report recognizes. You are among those who have and continue to make this quality spiritual and educational opportunity possible. Thank you. May God bless you and Mary, the mother of all young people and of all life, pray for us all, especially the precious students in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Yours in Christ, Most Reverend Paul J. Swain Bishop of Sioux Falls
FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS †
Dear Friends, Parents and Alumni, Thank you for your investment in the 2600+ students of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. I’ve been a part of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for nearly 20 years, and am continually amazed at what your generosity has allowed us to accomplish. Throughout the past year we have rebranded our school system, developed a plan to expand our international student program, explored options for growth in southern Sioux Falls and renewed a long-term partnership with Avera Health. While we celebrate all we have achieved, it’s also important to look forward to analyze what more can be done. We are currently updating our strategic plan as we refocus our vision and direction for the future. This past year, we have identified three pillars which will form the basis of our strategic plan. Those pillars are Catholic Identity, Academic Excellence and Operational Vitality. Each has unique opportunities and challenges for our board, administrators and staff. In the fall, our standing committees will participate in offering feedback and input into the Vision 2025 plan. We are committed to addressing our pillars as opportunities for growth and what is best for our children as we work towards our greater mission as parents and educators. We look forward to building on the rich history and strong foundation of those who have gone before us as we strive for a future built on Community, Faith and Excellence in our schools. A good friend of mine once wrote, “A Catholic school is a place to learn and develop skills... but most importantly, a Catholic school is a place to learn, articulate and practice our faith. The goal is not the transmission of facts from one head to another, but rather the transformation of one’s life by the surrender of one’s heart to Jesus and His Gospel… to foster a faith and let God’s providence do the rest.” I believe transformation happens at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, is deeply embedded in our culture, and is lived out in our service to others. Your ongoing support allows us to continue to strive for excellence in all we do. Please keep us in your daily prayers, as you are in ours.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT What does being a Knight mean to you? To your student(s)? One of the pieces of this year’s Extravaganza fundraiser was creating little Knight ‘shields’ which we gave to some of our students. They wrote what it meant to them to be a Knight. We were touched and impressed by their responses. “Being a Knight means being a leader,” wrote young Abby. Kaity said that “Being a Knight means being ambitious!” Others said it meant being helpful, being respectful, being kind to others or being a good student. Still others wrote that “Being a Knight means to follow Jesus” and “Being a Knight means being faithful.” Yes, they’re all correct. Being a Knight is all of those things. It’s just so simple, really. Our students get it. We want our students to do all of these things and know that you do, too. We also asked them why they love their teachers and the responses were sometimes hilarious. “My teacher is the best because she teaches the right stuff… most of the time.” One student wrote that he loves his school because he ‘gets to do math’. One of our favorites was from little Emmi, who wrote, “I love my teacher because she feeds me.” We think she meant actual food, but we know our teachers also ‘feed’ our students with knowledge and love. These messages from our young students ‘feed us’ and keep us inspired to continue working to support our schools and our teachers. You ‘feed us’ with your prayers and your support and for that, we are so grateful.

Moving Forward with Excellence Avera Partnership Renewal
The Benedictine and Presentation Sisters have deep roots in both ministries of education and health care. In the late 1800’s, Sisters from both orders came to South Dakota and established schools as their missionary outreach. When health care was brought to their attention as an equal or even greater need, they entered that mission field as well. Both orders have been active in ministries of education and health care ever since. The Catholic community will forever be indebted to their leadership which laid the foundation for our two entities, Avera and Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, to partner together and continue their efforts. In 2007, Sioux Falls Catholic Schools expanded its relationship with Avera as part of the Building On Excellence Campaign to completely renovate O’Gorman High School. A campaign of this size was certainly a stretch goal in all that was hoped to be accomplished, and Avera’s $10 Million, 13-year agreement that helped address building projects, academics, athletics and marketing was the lead gift that moved things to another level. “We are so grateful to the campaign chairs who helped us dream much bigger than we ever could’ve imagined at that time,” says Michelle Katen, Exec. Director of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation. “For Avera to come on board was so significant. The gift was not only for the O’Gorman campus, where the visible changes could be seen, but there was also a substantial investment in the long-term with endowments for scholarships and teacher salaries that continues to be felt throughout the system.”
The impact is being felt by Avera as well, with many of our alumni looking to them for employment when launching their careers. “When working on a video for the partnership presentation, we went to Avera to talk to some alumni employees about how they feel the two institutions’ missions go together,” says Katen. “When we got there, we immediately ran into over a dozen more alumni who were Dawn Williams Burns eager to participate.” Dawn Williams Burns ’10 was in the first partnership year for shadowing opportunities at Avera during her junior year anatomy class. “It was a big reason why I decided to go into the medical field. I really enjoyed the community and the professionals I followed. It’s fun to see the new students come in and follow me now,” says Dawn. “Being an O’Gorman grad and partnering here with Avera McKennan has been so incredible,” says Lisa Gunia Jorgenson ’99, a neonatal nurse practitioner who also works on the Avera Careflight neonatal team. “I’ve been able to help out with the ‘Green Carpet’ experience here, getting those O’Gorman students in here and exposed to different healthcare experiences and to personally shadow many of the students to show them what a great Catholic organization this is, and how it is just a continuation of O’Gorman High School and this Catholic community that we have here in Lisa Gunia Jorgenson Sioux Falls.”
With the completion of that incredible Building On Excellence partnership, leaders from Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools met once again with leaders from Avera to discuss continuing the partnership, and we are pleased to share with you that we have once again signed an agreement to partner with them for the next 15 years. The “Moving Forward With Excellence” partnership with Avera will allow us to address a number of additional goals, including: BUILDING PROJECTS • Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools are analyzing the efficiencies of the elementary schools along with the enrollment data to project future elementary school locations and possible new construction in the south central metro area. • McEneaney Field and O’Gorman Junior High field updates—these two facilities are utilized by more than 1,100 of our students annually. Programs that use the field include football, girls’ and boys’ soccer, track and field, cross country, marching band, PE classes and strength and conditioning programs. • Our International Student Program expands opportunities for cultural diversity and a global perspective for students at O’Gorman. A recent purchase of the Auburn Hills Apartments across the street from O’Gorman will allow for boarding opportunities for those students from other countries seeking an education in the United States. The program could potentially provide housing for 32 international students, in addition to those who choose to stay in the traditional setting of a homestay with families in Sioux Falls. ACADEMICS Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools are studying ways to keep tuition affordable for all families who desire a Catholic education, while addressing the social justice issues of equitable teacher pay. Growing the endowments for teacher salaries and tuition assistance will be critical to ensure that we are able to continue to provide a Catholic education for an increasing number of children. • Growing our tuition assistance endowment to $3 million • Growing our teacher salaries endowment to $10 million • Expanding educational programs in each of our schools.
ATHLETICS • Sports Medicine – Avera provides (and funds) two athletic trainers and a strength and conditioning coach to support the athletic programs at O’Gorman High School and Junior High. In addition, physicians are present at all home varsity football games. There are 800 high school and 360 junior high students who are impacted through these services which provide preventive and diagnostic health care to student athletes. • Athletic Training – Each year, 20-25 students participate in a Prevention and Care of Athletic Injury program which has hourly requirements in student training. Classes are taught by Avera’s athletic trainers. Many of our students take the class as an introduction to the health industry as an athletic trainer, physical therapist, nurse or doctor. This is a unique offering at O’Gorman. • Summer Camps/Strength and Conditioning Programs – Avera partners with O’Gorman High School and Jr. High coaches to provide prep training and developmental training for student athletes year round. There are over 400 high school and 700 grade 6-8 students who participate in these programs each summer. While other schools have partnerships with healthcare organizations to provide athletic trainers in their schools, our partnership with Avera is involved in a much greater, more impactful way. “This is a huge commitment on Avera’s part to once again step up for Catholic education in Sioux Falls,” says Kyle Groos, President of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. “You’ll see field improvements immediately, but know that many more things are happening behind the scenes because of this incredible gift.” “It will be felt throughout our entire system through programming that will happen immediately in our elementary schools, increased scholarships for students and more support for our teachers,” says Katen. “It’s so much bigger than providing athletic trainers at our practices and games. This is STEM programs, technology, workforce development... taking care of our teachers and students. We are incredibly grateful.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION †
In the Foundation Office, we often talk about how the gifts today will help sustain Catholic education for many future generations. While preparing for the annual report, we interviewed Fr. O’Dell for a story and he shared a heart-warming example of generosity in his parish. We particularly love this story because it is about one of our current high school students and their wonderful perspective about blessings from God.
Michelle Katen, Executive Director
St. Therese Parish is in the process of building a large addition—a high school-sized gymnasium to be used by the parish, the Catholic schools system and the entire neighborhood as a community center. Fr. O’Dell challenged his parishioners and younger members to give sacrificially to the effort. “I asked them to consider, ‘What can I sacrifice and give?’” He told the young people, “You’re in this, too. This is your church. This is your parish. You need to help.” Shortly after that, a young O’Gorman student handed him an envelope with his pledge to the project. “When I opened it up, he had put $1,000 of his summer money in there. So I called him and said, ‘Are you sure this is what you want to do?’ and he said, ‘I’m absolutely sure. Everything I have is from God anyway.’” Fr. O’Dell said that it really bolstered his faith. It bolsters ours as well. The incredible progress at the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation is because of people like this student who understand the concept of sharing our blessings. The growth of our endowment funds is providing significant support today to our students in the form of scholarships and tuition assistance. In addition, teacher salary endowments and the Staff Salary Initiative, which raises over $550,000 annually, has made an immediate impact on the compensation for our staff. Our sincerest thanks to ALL who are supporting the long term financial health of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.
Rusty Fiegen, Foundation Chair

BISHOP LEVEL
Bishop Thomas O’Gorman The second Bishop of Sioux Falls was the Right Rev. Thomas O’Gorman, a noted scholar and historian. He was ordained in 1865 in the Diocese of St. Paul, MN, was educated in France, taught at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN and was head of the History Department at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. There he was installed as Bishop of South Dakota in 1896. He had a great knowledge of Catholic church history and authored a book, “History of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.” During the 25 years O’Gorman was Bishop, his diocese was divided in half, and he became head of the East River diocese. During his tenure, O’Gorman increased the number of priests and Catholics within the diocese and erected numerous churches, schools and hospitals, as well as a Catholic college, Columbus College, in Sioux Falls. O’Gorman oversaw the building of our beloved St. Joseph Cathedral, dedicating it 100 years ago in 1919. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, O’Gorman High School and O’Gorman Junior High are all named in his honor.

Fr. Kevin O’Dell
Fr. Kevin O’Dell entered the seminary right out of high school but left after six years, unsure about what God was calling him to do. He pursued an academic career, building an impressive academic resume. He has a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Philosophy, Master’s degrees in Social Work, Education and Theology, and has a double Doctorate in Education and Psychology. He was a principal and superintendent of schools, both public and Catholic, in Iowa and Omaha where, because of his background in counseling, he primarily worked with young people who were struggling in traditional programs. His work often extended beyond the school because of his ability to work with troubled youth. When he was 47, O’Dell says the thoughts of becoming a priest were strong enough that he went back to the seminary. “There was always in the back of my mind that knowledge that God was probably calling me to do this.” He has now been a priest for nearly 20 years. Fr. O’Dell is the campus minister for both Augustana and the University of Sioux Falls in addition to being pastor of St. Therese Parish. He also continues to work with people as a licensed counselor, often working with people who struggle with addictions. He is open about his own battle with alcoholism and has been in recovery for many years. “I know the horrible costs addiction can have on a person’s life. Unfortunately, in most cases, unless you’re an alcoholic or a drug addict, it’s hard to get another alcoholic or addict to listen to you. They’re going to say, ‘What do you know about it?’ There’s so much woundedness there.” Father has worked extensively in AA and in a variety of treatment facilities as a priest, and still goes to AA meetings regularly, not because he’s afraid he’ll drink but because it gives him an opportunity to practice serenity and sobriety and to also be of help to others. The majority of Fr. O’Dell’s time, however, has been spent working with young people in the school setting or in community organizations or agencies. “The young people are not the future of our church, they ARE the church. They are filled with such hope and idealism and such goodness. It’s a life-giving ministry to be able to work with them and see how they can pick up the ball and run with it. I’ve always felt a special calling to work with young people, both as a teacher, counselor and principal.” Fr. O’Dell says there’s never been a day since he was ordained that he has not truly loved and enjoyed what he does. “There are some days that are hectic, but I knew when I made the decision, sold my possessions and went back to the seminary, I knew that was the right decision. And that’s never wavered since then. I enjoy parish ministry, I enjoy school ministry, but what I enjoy most is being able to watch people embrace their faith and do quite astounding things.”

Miles and Lisa Beacom Philanthropy comes in many forms. It can describe when people share by giving of their time, their talents or by giving financial support to something. Miles and Lisa Beacom have generously embraced all three forms of stewardship when it comes to the Catholic schools. They jumped right in when their oldest two children started school. “We had just moved back from Chicago. We really wanted to build relationships with other families around Ally and Erin’s age,” says Miles. “Whenever they’d ask for volunteers we just thought that we needed to be involved. It didn’t matter whether it was mopping the floors or fundraising or whatever, we always enjoyed it.” “In the beginning, we didn’t have a lot of ‘gifts’ to be giving; all we really had was time,” says Lisa. The bonus for the Beacoms was that by giving so much of their time, they reaped even greater rewards. “Some of our best friends now are the parents we got involved with back then.” Over the years, Lisa has served on the Technology Committee at St. Lambert’s, the Foundation’s Institutional Advancement committee, and also donated countless hours at her children’s schools, from working in the kitchen to the library to the office, as well as assisting with various fundraisers. Miles served on the Development Committee and was SFCS School Board President twice. With a real knack for marketing, he pushed administrators to create a concrete marketing plan that included television and radio ads, along with billboards and other forms of advertising to better publicize the system’s many successes. “We had a great story to tell. It was letting people know how important Catholic education is and the success that we’re having.” He said administrators were initially a little hesitant to publicly compare our test scores with other schools in the area. “If we don’t share that information, people won’t know how much stronger it is as a school system,” says Miles. In addition to giving of their time and talents, the Beacoms give generously to many fundraisers and drives, including the Building On Excellence Campaign. They served as co-chairs and became “Partners in Excellence” by giving a significant leadership gift. Miles and Lisa also started an endowment which provides tuition assistance for students with financial need from their parish. The Beacom family includes three biological children, Ally ‘12, Erin ‘13, and Ashlee ’17, plus a ‘bonus son’ - Iman ’18—who joined the family just a few years ago, but is now 100% part of their family. Miles and Lisa say they will be forever grateful for all their family has received by being part of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community. “The Catholic Schools system really prepares the kids well in terms of their education. It also prepares them well for life. Everyone goes through struggles; they know how to pray. If we had it to do again, we wouldn’t change ANYTHING,” says Miles. “The education, the faith, the involvement by us and our kids.”

Julie Kolbeck
Julie Kolbeck’s first introduction to the Catholic schools in Sioux Falls was back in the very early 1980’s when she enrolled as a 4th grader at Christ the King. Who could’ve known then that around 30 years later she’d be back at the school as its principal? After graduating from O’Gorman in 1988, Julie went to SDSU where she earned a degree in secondary education. She started teaching at Christ the King in 3rd grade as a long-term sub and then became the PE teacher before moving over to St. Mary’s. Julie’s husband later accepted a job in the Twin Cities, but they returned to Sioux Falls in 2005. Julie taught and coached at a local public high school until 2007 when she accepted a position back at St. Mary’s. In 2015, she was tapped to be principal at Christ the King. In addition to serving as principal, Julie was head volleyball coach and also worked to finish her Master’s in Education (USD 2018). As a teacher, Julie loved the ability to see kids grow, learn and develop. “Every day you can make a difference in a child’s life,” says Julie. She says she relates to the teachers she had and how important they were to her, how they were able to keep her in line and on track. “It is a FAMILY and we take care of our family and look out for one another.” As a principal, Julie says every day brings forth new challenges and opportunities. “I try to use all of the knowledge that I have learned along the way—from being a student in the Catholic schools, then as a teacher. I want what’s best for my school and my students. You feel as though you are making a difference in a student’s life by giving them the best education possible.” Julie says it’s also easy to get attached to not only the kids but the parents as well. “You are going through this educational journey with them and wanting what’s best for their kids. It’s very personal. You experience the highs and lows with them. You celebrate with them, but when they’re hurting, you’re praying for them or with them. I didn’t fully understand those deep family connections until I became an administrator.” Teaching for a short time in a public school setting was eye-opening. “I think about how we utilize our faith in every aspect of our day. When you don’t have the ability to say to somebody ‘I’ll pray for you tonight’ you see how much you depend on your faith and faith community. It’s very sad to not be able to share your faith during challenging times. Something’s missing.” Julie and her husband, Darin, have two children: Emily graduated in ‘16 and Jack will be a senior at O’Gorman this fall. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Julie also coached volleyball for about 17 years at O’Gorman, with State championships in 2002, 2013 and 2014.

CUMULATIVE GIVING - FOUNDATION LEGACY SOCIETY EDUCATOR LEVEL
Kayla Schmidt
While many of our Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools teachers are alumni of the school system, some come from ‘outside’ of our Knights community. Kayla Schmidt graduated from USD with a degree in elementary education and spent a year teaching in Yankton at Sacred Heart School, commuting from Vermillion while her husband, Howie, commuted to Sioux Falls. After a year of that, Kayla says they’d had enough road time so she applied with the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, was offered a job teaching 2nd grade at St. Katharine Drexel, and they moved to Sioux Falls. “I loved teaching 2nd grade because I got to teach the kids about the sacraments and help get them prepared to receive those sacraments.” She also brought a version of the Passion Play from Yankton to have her 2nd graders present. After a couple of years teaching 2nd grade, Kayla moved to teach at the kindergarten level and is a tremendous fit for that important entry level grade. Even though she’s moved to a different grade level, teaching in a Catholic school is just the right fit for Kayla. “I really love being able to help others. It’s extra special that I get to share my love of Jesus and to be able to help them come to know Jesus as well.” As a kindergarten teacher, she especially loves to see the growth of her students during that year, both spiritually and academically. In our Catholic schools, we invite all by saying “You Belong in Blue”, and we hope that those who did not grow up here and attend our schools experience the community feeling. Kayla says that she and her husband, Howie, felt very welcomed when they arrived. “It really feels like a family. Everyone was so welcoming. We have a lot of friends who are O’Gorman alumni and they have just embraced us coming in,” says Kayla. “We feel like we’ve always been a part of the community.” Kayla and her husband are parents to two sweet, young children: Matthew, 3 and Mckenna, 1.

Jim Eppel ‘74
Moving to a new city when you’re a high school student is never easy. There are questions about whether you might fit in, whether you’ll find new friends, whether you’ll like your new school. For Jim Eppel, the move to Sioux Falls and O’Gorman High School came halfway through his freshman year. It didn’t take long for Jim to assimilate. “I was put at ease right away by the sense of friendship, family and community I found. I’ll never forget it. I was welcomed by both students and teachers. In particular, I remember the kindness and encouragement of Nancy Wheeler, Bill Frankman, Dorothy Neiles and Sister Margaret Mary, who should have achieved sainthood as a result of teaching ‘bachelor living.’” Jim made friends easily at O’Gorman, was involved in debate and student government, and was even named senior class president, not surprisingly to any of his new friends. He went on to St. Thomas University, graduating with a degree in public accounting. After a very short stint in that field, he entered the healthcare industry where he has spent the remainder of his career. Today Jim serves as Chief Administrative Officer of HealthPartners, an integrated healthcare organization comprised of hospitals, medical and dental clinics, medical and dental health plans, etc., employing 27,000 people. While he’s lived in the Twin Cities for most of his life, the four years Jim spent in Sioux Falls left an indelible impression on him. “It is where I call ‘home.’ That is, in large part, due to the sense of community offered by O’Gorman and the great—and lifelong—friendships I developed.” Jim has helped organize reunions for the Class of ‘74 throughout the years and says he always looks forward to those opportunities to come ‘home’ to Sioux Falls and reconnect with his classmates. He’s also helped the Alumni Office coordinate Regional Alumni Reunions in the Twin Cities. Jim makes it a point to continue to support our Catholic Schools financially, particularly in the area of tuition assistance. “I see my support of Sioux Falls Catholic Schools as both an act of gratitude and an investment in Christian education that supports every child, from the first day to graduation. I credit O’Gorman with a great education and, as important, an appreciation for the values modeled and taught. I have tried to apply those values in my personal and work life, and I have always remembered the importance and value of community, which has a very direct application to the healthcare field in which I have spent my career.” Jim and his wife, Barb, have two children. Sarah and her husband live in Nashville, and John and his wife live in New York City.

Tim and Jeanne Kappenman “God gives us blessings to see what we can do with them, and when we become good stewards with those blessings, He continues to bless us even more.” Tim and Jeanne (Friedman) Kappenman are no strangers to the Catholic schools in Sioux Falls. Tim is a 1980 graduate; Jeanne is an ‘88 grad. Their four children are also O’Gorman graduates: Samantha ’11, Tyler ’12, Mikayla ’15 and Ryan ’18. For the Kappenmans, sending their children to the Catholic schools was never a question, but they knew they weren’t just going to enroll their kids; they were going to get involved. Over the years, they’ve been somewhat ‘fixtures’ at their children’s schools. They’ve helped with Cub Scouts, field trips, fall festivals, been on committees for fundraisers and more. Jeanne has spent innumerable hours volunteering, serving as a patient listener to young readers, helping out in the school kitchen for 20 years, making copies in the office to help out teachers, serving as an SFO officer, substituting in the school office for the secretary and she currently serves as a Board member for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board. Tim and Jeanne also gave a large leadership gift in the early years of the Alumni 10x12 Tuition Assistance Giving Program to help get the program going and encourage matching gifts. “I wouldn’t have had my Catholic education without tuition assistance. Someone was generous so that my family could go to Catholic schools. God gives us blessings to see what we can do with them, and when we become good stewards with those blessings, He continues to bless us even more. Tim and I want to make sure that other families can have their children attend Catholic schools,” says Jeanne. What has reinforced the sense of community the Kappenmans have enjoyed for decades, especially in the last few months, is a diagnosis of kidney cancer for Tim. “I’m getting texts and messages from former classmates and (Catholic schools) friends that say, ‘I heard about Tim and I’m praying for your family.’ People I haven’t talked to for 5-10 years,” says Jeanne. “We have so many people praying for us during this time and it’s what sustains us.” The Kappenmans are seeing that the adage, ‘the more you give, the more you receive’ extends to community support as well, because they’re experiencing an outpouring of support from other Catholic school parents and alumni who now are physicians, nurses, techs, etc. “I think 90% of the medical professionals we’ve worked with or run into are connected through the Catholic schools. Even those who aren’t taking direct care of me are stopping in to see me and offer their support. It’s been phenomenal,” says Tim. “I don’t know how someone would even remotely get through this without that support. All based on faith.”

Jordan Miller ‘20
With a dream to head to an elite university after graduation next year, Jordan Miller is one of those kids who is certain to be noticed by many college admissions offices. A stellar GPA of 4.226 will certainly help, but he’s also very involved in and around campus. In the last three years you may have seen him on the basketball court, on the baseball field, on stage for the fall play, children’s show or musical, but he’s also been involved in oral interp, Student Ambassadors and Student Council. Jordan also participates in the “Guys’ Group” at the high school, which is facilitated by Chaplain Fr. Joe Scholten and theology teacher Nolan Cleary for young male students. “Guys’ group” is to help young males at O’Gorman talk about, and grow in, their faith. He’s also a member of the National Honor Society. After college, he plans on going to medical school. Both parents are in the medical field. He says he loves biology and that’s helping to fuel his interest in medicine. “I think O’Gorman is special because it’s more than a community—it’s like a family. With the smaller enrollment, every student gets the necessary attention by the teachers. Everybody is really close. The staff members know the kids. The teachers are wonderful leaders and I really look up to them. It’s just so much more than just a school.” Jordan points to teachers like Jeff Gordon. “You can really tell he truly cares about all of us. We do intentions every single morning—and he’s always praying for his students and always asking them how they are and you know he really means it.” Jordan doesn’t think all of his fellow students fully understand the impact of all they’ve been given in terms of their education, but he says he appreciates what he’s been given. “I want the donors to know that what they do doesn’t go unnoticed. They’re the reason O’Gorman is so special and why we have all of these wonderful opportunities. It’s because of them.”

The O’Gorman Foundation Fund was established from the many gifts received through various fund drives to benefit O’Gorman High School prior to the formation of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools system in 1991. These dollars are to be invested and only a limited percentage of the fund is to be disbursed for use at O’Gorman High School. Balance: $1,027,638. The Teachers’ Endowment Fund was established through a capital campaign drive in 1991, allocating the first $500,000 from the drive toward an endowment to benefit Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools teachers’ salaries. Only a limited percentage from this fund is disbursed. Balance: $508,900. The Pooled Funds are defined as those funds established by donors which provide permanent support of the mission of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, whether in the form of teacher compensation, tuition assistance, scholarships, programs, capital improvements or other support. Unless otherwise stipulated by the donor, only a limited percentage from these funds is disbursed. Balance: $11,594,778. The Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota represents current balances of endowments established through the CCFESD for the benefit of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Balance: $6,010,674.
INVESTMENT POLICY Investment decisions are made using the following investment guidelines: • The long term investment objective is to provide reliable and sustainable income for the current needs of stakeholders and perpetuate the resources of the Foundation for future generations of beneficiaries. Therefore, the minimum investment return needs to be sufficient to offset spending and expenses. • Social and moral guidelines will be followed to avoid investing in companies whose activities either generate a profit or promote social change that conflict with teachings of the Catholic Church. As a result of excluding investment in firms that directly carry out immoral activities, it is the explicit intention to encourage those corporations that seek to protect the sanctity of human life and promote the common good. • The target asset allocations for the investment portfolio are set forth in the table below. • To maintain the proper allocation, it is the policy of the Foundation to periodically rebalance the portfolio in the event any asset class allocation differs by more than 20% of the stated target.

WIDOW HONORS HUSBAND’S MEMORY BY HELPING TEACHERS.
“You’ll know when it’s the right thing. This was it.”
Tom and Jean Huegel moved to Sioux Falls when their two girls (Erin ’92 and Mona ’96) were little so that Tom could work for Citibank, which he did for 17 years. While his background was actually in Special Education, he used the skills from his degree to succeed in business. He later owned a fiberglass manufacturing company, Design Tanks. The transition to Sioux Falls and a new school for the girls went very smoothly, according to Jean. “It was a very welcoming experience.” Jean formed friendships with the parents of other St. Mary (and later O’Gorman) students quickly. Friendships that have withstood the test of time. In fact, 24 years after Mona’s graduation, those moms still meet for dinner every month. Jean says she and Tom always appreciated the school system and supported it financially as well, even long after their girls graduated. “We started out pretty darned poor, but Tom did pretty well in business. This was just his way of giving back,” says Jean. Sadly, Tom passed away in 2016 from acute myeloid leukemia. Since he passed, Jean says she’s been trying to figure out a way to do something impactful in his memory. After recently attending a Bishop O’Gorman
Catholic Schools Foundation event, invited by former SFCS Academic Services Coordinator Barb Rance, “It was like a revelation. It was (Foundation Exec. Dir.) Michelle Katen’s comment about how we are in competition with the public schools for the best teachers... And now with new schools opening, they’ll be going after our teachers to fill all of those positions. That was really the trigger.” Since Tom passed, Jean says she’d been trying to figure out a way to honor his memory. “Someone had said —‘You’ll know when it’s the right thing.’ and I knew this was it. This was it. This was a way to make a lasting impact for something we strongly believed in.” Jean met with Michelle at the Foundation office and established the Huegel Family Fund to support teacher salaries. Jean hopes the gift on behalf of her family will inspire others to establish endowments as well in order to help our teachers. There is a great sense of pride being able to tell others that her daughters graduated from O’Gorman, says Jean. “Why wouldn’t we want to continue to support it even though our kids are gone? We should even MORE so. I tell others ‘My kids went there—they went to that awesome school.’”
