OUR MISSION
...to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence.
FROM THE BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS BOARD CHAIRMAN †
Even though this past year brought many challenges to our country and to the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community, there is much to be thankful for, and I am truly grateful to have been able to serve my part as board chair. In addition to being a board member, I have six children attending Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools from preschool all the way up to the high school. I was privileged to witness the amazing dedication and hard work put forth by our teachers, administrators and staff as a response to the challenges of the COVID pandemic while maintaining the standards of providing a Catholic education and pushing students to academic excellence both in the classroom and through distance learning. In the midst of the many changes to the traditional view of class settings, sporting events and other extracurricular activities, we were able to persevere and achieve another outstanding school year. O’Gorman High School continued to excel in academics, athletics and the arts all while holding monthly praise and worship nights averaging more than 100 students in attendance to minister to the spiritual well-being of our high school students. The junior high implemented the Youth Entrepreneur program which inspires students with the values, vision and business principles needed to pursue entrepreneur dreams. And our elementary schools were able to have opportunities to promote community by hosting end-of-year family events. We have been blessed to have Bishop DeGrood and our parish priests actively involved in Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. The spiritual and religious support that they provide to our students and staff has been invaluable this year as we all continue to strive keep Christ at the center of all we do. Finally, we are appreciative of the families of all eight of our Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools as you have endured the many challenges during this past year. We are grateful for the many sacrifices you make to allow your children to receive a Catholic education. As we look forward to the 2021-2022 school year, our schools are ready to invite families in, to host concerts and athletic competitions to full auditoriums and to enjoy the gift of our Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools family. Thank you and God bless,
Matt Mueller Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board Chair 2
FROM THE BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF SIOUX FALLS Dear Friends, Parents and Supporters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, During the past year with its many changes brought on by the pandemic, I have sensed in prayer and learned from my many encounters with the faithful that, as a community, we have grown in our understanding of the importance of faith. Trusting in the Lord, we have persevered. Faith is what helps us get through life, but it especially sustained us through this past year and the challenges it presented. I am grateful for the many witnesses to our Catholic faith that I have encountered during this unique time. Your continued financial support and, most importantly, your prayers have encouraged others to trust in Him. We are blessed in the city of Sioux Falls to have the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic school system. Through the Catholic education it provides, children are given the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with Christ. Through the sharing of your gifts, often at personal sacrifice, the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools are able to maintain an affordable level of tuition, strive to provide just wages to its teachers and staff and offer tuition assistance to families so that no child is denied access for financial reasons. This is a mission that “Our children are surrounded never ends, so your continued support is essential. every day by loving, caring people As you read through this year’s annual report, may we take time to give thanks to our awesome God for the faith that He continues to nurture within us and may you know of my continued prayers and gratitude for your support. May God bless each of you for the contributions you have made in support of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. In His Service,
who share a common set of values. They are able and encouraged to express these values in their thoughts and actions as well as in their academics.” - Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Parent

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BISHOP O GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS †
Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends, The past year has tested our country and our community in many ways. Our schools took on the important responsibility of finding innovative ways to educate children amidst this pandemic. We can all be very proud of the commitment the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ faculty and staff made to keep our schools open and our educational instruction impactful and effective. However, we also have many blessings at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. In fact, there are far too many to count or list here. Three of our greatest blessings are the past parents, alumni and friends who have laid the foundation, through planning and financial resources, for all that we have and for all that we are today. This has allowed for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools that we know and love today! It is our hope and desire to see this cycle of ‘paying it forward’ continue for generations to come. We are working with current families, alumni and our community as a whole to plan and provide the financial resources necessary to grow our schools and academic programs. The students in our grade schools will enjoy the benefits of generosity from those whom they do not know or may never meet. Children that are yet to be born will be the direct beneficiaries of what we do now and the plans that we make to provide a Catholic education. Each passing school year is critically formative for our students. During their time in school, students are developing academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. They are acquiring the confidence and the strong moral compass that will guide them through life. All elementary, junior high and high school students are provided numerous opportunities to grow as leaders and disciples of Christ. Our championship-level athletics, award-winning theatre programs and various extracurricular activities drive students to perform at their very best. We inspire and educate in faith. It is through these faith-based principles our students develop as leaders, as scholars and as faithful servants contributing to society. Thank you for all that each of you do for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. I can look to our students, teachers, staff, programs and facilities and see the results of your generosity. I can visualize all that we will do in the future due to the generosity of those before us, those who are in our community currently and those who are yet to come. Dream big with us and know that you are in my prayers of thanksgiving every day for all that you have done and continue to do for our Knights family!
With continued prayers and gratitude,
Kyle L. Groos

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT I recently took a fundraising class and was asked to tell the group about a gift that was made to my organization that left an impact on me. This question was hard to answer! Not because the donations made to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools don’t leave an impact on me, but because it was hard to narrow it down to just one. I am always amazed by the incredible gifts that families, alumni, businesses, supporters and even students give to our schools. This past year has been one of so much uncertainty, and yet, the Bishop O’Gorman Community came together to support our wonderful staff and students in big and small ways. One experience that touched me was when I gave an alumnus a tour of O’Gorman. He was very interested in our industrial arts program and shared stories of when he was in school and the impact that this program and the teachers had on him. Before he left, he handed us a donation. He was so proud of O’Gorman; you could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. Another story that comes to mind is of a donor who told us to find a student who was in real need of tuition assistance and said he would cover the entire cost of that student’s tuition. What an amazing gift! Finally, I found inspiration from a family who wanted to show their gratitude to all the teachers at their child’s school for the hard work the staff had put in during this trying year. They gave these staff members a monetary gift at Christmas to show their deep appreciation. There are so many stories like these - filled with countless people who want to give to keep our mission going and for that, I am truly thankful. These gifts all come with a story behind them and I love hearing people’s reasons for giving. They ALL leave an impact on me. I have a sign in my house that reads, “Start every day with a grateful heart”. It reminds me of the many things for which I am thankful. I am so grateful for my family and friends, for the teachers and staff that continue to show up every day to make an impact on our students’ lives and for all of the generous donors that give of their time and treasure every year to continue to make Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools a place where students will learn about their faith and how to be successful in life. As an O’G alumna, current parent and member of the staff, I am so proud of this community and the generosity shown. Gratitude is an attitude that is easy to have when working as the Director of Development. Thank you all so very much.

BEYOND THE NORMAL SCHOOL YEAR . doing things
.. ! y l t n e r e f f i d e a littl According to our Return to Learn committee and information packet distributed to all families, our main goal for the 2020-2021 school year was “to create a safe environment that provides the best opportunity to keep our students and staff teaching and learning in-person throughout the entire school year.” Together, we achieved this mission successfully. 8
Morgan Robey and Patrick Frankman
The evidence of the 100-year pandemic could be seen everywhere within the eight Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Throughout the school year, students and staff wore masks, practiced social distancing, used endless pumps of hand sanitizer and even utilized plexiglass partitions. But our schools were back to what they were meant to be; a place for children to grow in-person. For students and staff at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, we showed our true colors. We banded together and displayed a true, caring and Catholic community. “It was a big ask to be a teacher during COVID. We knew we needed to support them,” Morgan Robey, Counselor at O’Gorman High School said. And that is exactly what they did. The entire Counseling Department at OGHS stepped up and took the initiative to plan various activities throughout the year that helped build a community for the staff. Random Acts of Kindness gestures included anonymous gifts, surprise snacks and celebrating milestones in new and creative ways. In December, the Counseling Department promoted Mental Health Bingo which encouraged faculty and
staff to do little things throughout the day to care for their own mental health. The easy, attainable tasks included taking a few extra steps to say “hi!” to someone in a different wing and following recommended breathing techniques that were sent to staff via email. While the activities provided benefits on their own, the prize for completing a bingo card was definitely an incentive in and of itself. Like many of us, Robey found a hobby during COVID: propagating plants. She used this COVID craft and reached out to Patrick Frankman, art teacher at OGHS, who donated handmade pots to host the plants. These potted plants were then used as prizes for staff members who completed their Mental Health Bingo card. Mental Health Bingo was a success and Robey and Frankman partnered together and utilized their green thumbs to provide others a reason to smile through the crazy year. In a typical school-year, teachers gather together frequently. Students and families are in and out of the school buildings, the offices are a hub of activity.
Other schools recognized the need to get creative with encouraging staff and families to feel comfortable with each other this year. In addition to being aware of the mental health strains many teachers were facing, principals and the counseling departments recognized the importance of basic interactions. “We hosted a coffee cart for the staff on the landing and invited people to gather depending upon their comfort level,” said Jones. Principal of St. Katharine Drexel Elementary, Stacy Charron, incorporated staff “Grab ‘n Go” Snack Stations all day, every day. SKD staff played “Guess Who?”. Charron said, “In a time when we’ve been feeling distanced from others and a little out of touch, each month staff members can submit responses to posed questions that tell a little bit about themselves.”
The questions ranged from favorite sports team, favorite sweet treat, favorite Christmas present as a “The first time we were able to gather as a [staff] child and so much more. Those who opted to play community was during fall conferences.” said Kelly submitted a response and the top three “guessers” Jones, Director of the OGHS Counseling Department. won a $5 gift card. New this year, Fridays at SKD 9
“...they are just happy to be in school, that they are okay with doing things a little differently.”
were Staff Spirit Days. Having a spirit day once a week may not seem a big deal, but this isn’t a normal school year. The spirit day allowed staff to show their school spirit, to relax just a bit and to bond in a unique way. “We’ve had a great year at SKD, even given the unique situation. The resiliency, flexibility, and positive outlook of our staff set the tone to start the year and they haven’t looked back!” Charron said. These small acts of kindness strengthened the staff relationships at both OGHS and SKD, which allowed the teachers and staff to feel recognized for the extra responsibilities that came with a pandemic year. Those extra responsibilities included learning how to video conference via Zoom, teaching virtually and in-person to prevent students from learning at a different rate, talking and projecting all-day with a mask on, cleaning surfaces between class changes, preparing for quarantine at any moment with ever-changing substitute teacher plans, keeping students engaged during quarantine and checking in more often with students. Maggie Johnson, 6th grade teacher at Christ the King Elementary, also had regular check-ins with her class: “I love having meetings
with the class. Each week, we look at our goals and try to get into new desk rows. Each row is a “team” and they work together all week to meet our goals and follow the classroom expectations. I also started having the students write in their journal at the end of each day. I feel like last year was so hard on so many of them and, at times, they don’t verbalize how they are feeling. By simply doing that for five minutes at the end of each day, it has turned into so many great conversations.” Despite all the challenges, students’ activities never stopped. Wade Charron, O’Gorman Junior High Principal, was pleased that the majority of our co-curricular activities were still available to students: “Activities tend to be the place where students meet a majority of their friends while in the school setting. I applaud the teachers and coaches for going the extra mile in providing a safe environment to do so.” Steve Kueter, Activities Director for O’Gorman High School, was “…proud of our students, families and coaches that had to handle a multitude of COVID restrictions throughout the year. The students were able to compete and be successful. We are extremely grateful for all the cooperation of the O’Gorman community in moving through this pandemic.”
Students excited for their first day of school.
10
The students were resilient and achieved success in a wide variety of activities. Our students won state titles in Girls Cross Country, Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball. The Debate and Oral Interp teams are nationally ranked among their peers and we hosted four theatrical performances including the spring musical. Elementary students enjoyed virtual Christmas concert performances and in-person Spring concerts, a multitude of dress down days and in-class parties, even though it may not have been the same as previous years. In a typical year, Johnson’s sixth graders would complete their Shark Tank persuasive writing project with special guests in the classroom for the presentations: “When I talked about how we have done things in the past, [the students] all tell me that they are just happy to be in school, that they are okay with doing things a little differently. We have all become a lot more flexible this year.”
When we are forced to try new things and to be creative in new ways, we may be surprised by the results. While no one would like to repeat all the new initiatives we installed this year, some practices we learned this year will carry on to future school years. For example, Johnson, who also coordinates Christ the King’s Before and After School Programs, found success with splitting After School Care into smaller groups. “Instead of keeping students in the same grades together we try to keep families together instead. I will definitely keep them like that. It is so good to see the older and younger students playing and learning together,” she said. This year forced us to test our flexibility and it proved that some of the changes we implemented make sense in our schools. New technology tools a teacher may have been hesitant to use have become their new favorite. Some teachers and families enjoyed
the option of Zoom parent/teacher meetings. And volleyball games worked better because they didn’t switch sides in between matches. This pandemic was something that no one saw coming. Obviously, there have been many moments to mourn over the loss of life and the loss of opportunity. But we have chosen to place our trust in the Lord and work tirelessly to ensure that our students receive the exceptional, Catholic education that only Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools can provide. Our teachers have moved mountains for their students and our parents stepped up to help throughout mandatory quarantines. Most importantly, our students seized every opportunity to learn and to grow in their faith despite everything else going on in the world. This year has been one that no one hopes to repeat, but it will be a year that we remember forever.

“Giving back to your school and community is very important. It shows you appreciate everything your school and community have done for you. It’s also a great way to show that you care for those who are younger than you and set a good example for them. Most importantly, it shows God how thankful you are for everything He has given you. The Legacy Monsignor Doyle
“I thank my God whenever I think of you, and every time I pray for you all, I always pray with joy.” - Philippians 1: 3-4 Fr. Charles Cimpl shared this verse at the wake service of Monsignor James Doyle who passed away May 24, 2021. Monsignor Doyle left a legacy in the Sioux Falls community. He was a man of many talents including his ability to listen to the needs of others, to unite groups for a common goal and to improve the quality of life for so many. The buildings he brought to life still stand and the Gospel he preached in his daily interactions live on through the people of Sioux Falls. In 1979, Bishop Dudley tasked, at the time, Fr. Doyle with starting a new parish in western Sioux Falls. “It was such an exciting time to be part of a new parish,” stated founding member Toni Halverson. Doyle worked with 380 families from Christ the King Parish to secure land and funding to establish St. Michael Parish. The group, elated at the prospects of a church on the west side of the city, celebrated Mass at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday nights and at O’Gorman High School on Sundays. Toni fondly remembered the life changing act of building a parish, “We became very involved in our new parish. It gave us a chance to get to know Fr. Doyle and recommit ourselves to the church. Fr. Doyle’s ability to draw people to church was amazing. He had a brilliant mind, remembering everyone’s names. He had a great sense of humor and his deep spirituality made our liturgies to be envied. The beautiful music and messages from Fr. Doyle and Fr. Cimpl made us grow quickly as a community of faith.” The first Mass in the new building was celebrated on Christmas Eve in 1981. 26

During his time at USD, the Newman Center was always packed with Catholic and non-Catholic students. He was a popular professor and was recognized as Professor of the Year numerous times in addition to being inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Many students continued their friendship with Doyle after leaving college.

Doyle remarked on the building of St. Michael as his greatest life achievement. Fr. Cimpl, the Chaplin at O’Gorman and associate pastor to Fr. Doyle at the time, stated, “As priests, we don’t marry or have children. He compared [building St. Michael] to having a child and thought of himself as the parent of St. Michael Parish. He got a lot of enthusiasm from the people who wanted to have their own parish.” And that enthusiasm was contagious! Dave and Connie Landry, members of St. Michael Parish and life-long friends of Monsignor Doyle, reminisced on how Doyle’s ability to draw people to him allowed him to achieve more and how people from all over Sioux Falls would flock to Mass at St. Michael Church just to hear him preach. “He was exciting to be around. Whenever he called, you knew it would cost time or money but it was always worth it in the end. No matter how adamant you were to say no, when you left his presence you had said yes and were delighted,” said Dave. Monsignor had an impact that reached further than the Catholic community of Sioux Falls. At the University of South Dakota as a professor and the director of the Newman Center, he was surrounded by intellectuals which fueled his passion for history and encouraged him to dig deeper. “His philanthropy and ecumenical spirit were able to cross the aisle and bring people together,” Landry remembered.
For more than 30 years, Doyle participated in a men’s only book club focused on historical books. The membership was fluid throughout the years as families moved and members passed away. Many of those members were impacted by Monsignor so much so that several spoke at his wake and funeral and all were honorary pallbearers. In 1996, Fr. Doyle was honored to receive the title Monsignor. A priest is recommended by their Bishop to the Holy Father to receive this honor. It is reserved for priests who have done not only physical things like build churches, but have shown leadership in spiritual acts too. Monsignor Doyle definitely fit the bill. “He remained the priest for everyone. He had many deep friendships. Many people loved him because he challenged all of us to be better people. He taught us how to reach out to the poor and serve wherever we could to improve the world given to us. This is one of the most important lessons we learned from him,” remarked Halverson, whose friendship with Monsignor Doyle blossomed during the building of St. Michael and continued up to his death. He left a legacy with the St. Michael Parish, The Banquet and the St. Francis House. But much more than that he touched the lives of thousands of people. Monsignor James Doyle’s life was celebrated on June 3, 2021 at St. Michael. His casket was laid at the front of the altar under the protection of the unfurled wings of St. Michael the Archangel himself and the church was filled with friends. 27
The Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Development Office and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation work together to provide tuition assistance for faith-based education, compensation to our dedicated staff and resources to enhance our facilities and technology. A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP O†GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
It’s been said that tough times often bring out the best in people, and that has undoubtedly been true here in our Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community. Although I’ve said this before, it’s worth repeating—I’m continually amazed at the generosity of so many who contribute to the future of our Catholic Schools. I’m especially impressed at the tremendous support that we’ve received this past year. In a year that we could have written off to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, you instead helped us grow our Foundation. We welcomed the greatest number of new members than we have for the past five years. Our annual Tuesday for Teachers campaign and Sporting Clays Shoot event raised a record amount of funds. And, while we are still finalizing our Fiscal Year 2021 numbers, the total contributions to the Foundation are shaping up to be some of the best in years. We are grateful for your generosity, especially over the last year. With that said, we need to stay focused on the future and what lies ahead. As tempting as it is to keep both the challenges and successes of the past year fresh in our minds, our work to maintain the future of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is ongoing. We will always strive to support more families and staff while maintaining top-notch facilities for our community. Looking forward to Fiscal Year 2022 and beyond, the Foundation’s top priority is to continue to grow key teacher and staff salary endowments. As the Sioux Falls region and surrounding school districts experience unprecedented growth, the competition for our valued educators is only increasing. We are thankful for your continued support and prayers and to all the faithful who help us sustain our world-class Catholic education for generations to come!
Nicole R. Bruning, Executive Director As I reflect on the last year, I find myself drawn to the vision for the future of our Catholic schools. There’s never been a time in our country and in our world when there’s been a greater need to focus on the foundations of Christ’s teachings. In addition to a global pandemic, we are facing a moral, cultural and ethical chasm unlike ever before. While some may see this as a reason to despair, I am confident that our community will use this as an opportunity to better the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for students, teachers, staff, families and for the many generations of Knights to come. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is a haven where all students can feel at home. When we send our children to our Catholic schools, we can rest assure they are not only growing academically, but they are also growing in the most important way: spiritually. At a very uncertain time in the world, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is a place where we can continue to instill the core, Christian values in our children. Some days our kids need a hug, while some days they need a guiding hand—they are sure to get both in our schools. In supporting the Foundation, you are helping to ensure the future of our values and of our Catholic way of life. Thank you all for your commitment to the future of our Catholic schools!

INVESTMENT POLICY Investment decisions are made using the following investment guidelines: • The long term investment objective is to provide reliable and sustainable income for the current needs of stakeholders and perpetuate the resources of the Foundation for future generations of beneficiaries. Therefore, the minimum investment return needs to be sufficient to offset spending and expenses. • Social and moral guidelines will be followed to avoid investing in companies whose activities either generate a profit or promote social change that conflict with teachings of the Catholic Church. As a result of excluding investment in firms that directly carry out immoral activities, it is the explicit intention to encourage those corporations that seek to protect the sanctity of human life and promote the common good. • The target asset allocations for the investment portfolio are set forth in the table. • To maintain the proper allocation, it is the policy of the Foundation to periodically rebalance the portfolio in the event any asset class allocation differs by more than 20% of the stated target.

BISHOP LEVEL Archbishop Gullickson
For Archbishop Thomas Gullickson, O’Gorman Class of 1968, there’s no place like home. After ordination to the priesthood in 1976, he was assigned to teach at O’Gorman High School. During his three years at O’G, he taught freshmen and then senior religion and Latin. After two years at the Cathedral, he returned to Rome in the fall of 1981 for doctoral studies before entering the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1985. After a long absence, in November of 2004, the Archbishop chose to return to his hometown of Sioux Falls for ordination as a bishop at his beloved St. Joseph Cathedral. He invited his fellow alumni from the class of 1968 to the Cathedral to celebrate that memorable day with him. His twelve years of Catholic education laid the foundations for subsequent experiences and opportunities, notably because of the four years of German and Latin taught by all priests back then at O’Gorman. Archbishop Gullickson has traveled the world to serve the Church. After his studies in Rome, he served in Rwanda, Austria, Czechoslovakia, the Holy Land, Cyprus and Germany before being named the Pope’s ambassador to the Antilles and finally to Ukraine. He was finally sent to Switzerland and Liechtenstein for the last five years before reaching retirement age at 70. During those years away, Archbishop Gullickson did his best to make it to Sioux Falls annually for vacation and enjoyed renewing his ties to family and friends here and elsewhere in the United States. When he recently retired after nearly 45 years of priestly service, including 35 years abroad as a diplomat, there was no question about where he would land. Archbishop Gullickson is back in Sioux Falls and has been temporarily serving at St. Mary Parish in Salem, SD. Looking back on his experiences, Archbishop Gullickson fondly remembers his time spent at Minor Seminary which was located in what is now the O’Gorman Junior High building. He said, “So many relationships from my high school days have stayed with me over the years. Whether classmates from the Minor Seminary or from my class at O’G, despite long absences and distances, many of us have stayed as close as brothers and sisters. I am pleased as well to hear on occasion from my former students at O’G.” Despite the years that have passed, Archbishop Gullickson has always made a point to financially support Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. He donates annually to Go Give OG, which benefits tuition assistance for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools students. His support of our schools makes it clear that even though his parents moved away from Sioux Falls in 1969, Archbishop Gullickson still considers this community to be his home. He says, “I have friends and stories that I cherish from every place that I’ve been at. Hardly a day passes when I don’t reconnect with somebody or make a new and appreciated acquaintance.” Thank you, Archbishop Gullickson, for your years of service. We’re so glad you’re home!

CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS RELIGIOUS LEADER LEVEL Fr. Jordan Samson According to Fr. Jordan Samson, pastor of Christ the King Parish, one of the greatest joys of being called to the priesthood is that he gets to serve as a mediator for people’s relationship with God. “It’s a privileged place to be,” he says. Fr. Samson is originally from Eden, SD and attended school in Roslyn, SD. He then went on to the University of St. Thomas and the University of St. Paul for his seminarian studies. After completing his education and ordination, Fr. Samson served at St. Mary Parish in Aberdeen (2011-13), Holy Spirit in Sioux Falls (2013-15), St. Dominic in Canon (2015-17) and the Newman Center at Northern State University in Aberdeen (2017-2019) before being assigned to Christ the King in 2019. Life at Christ the King has been a whirlwind for Fr. Samson: “I’ve started to see so much potential and growth areas for expanding our outreach to campus ministry. Our school is growing. There’s a lot of work to do but there is a lot of hope for the future.” Christ the King has also been the location of several sessions of “The Well,” a high school ministry hosted monthly at various parishes throughout Sioux Falls by the Campus Ministry department of O’Gorman High School. Fr. Samson loves hosting this group! “An elementary student has a pretty easy time believing in God. Later in life, it can be tougher. When you see high schoolers choose to spend their Friday’s learning more about God, it’s inspiring,” says Sampson. One of the benefits of being pastor at Christ the King Parish is the school environment he gets to be part of. He believes that learning about Christ in every subject is really exciting and providing a safe place where students can talk about Christ is the most rewarding opportunity. The importance of finding a faith community to lean on is essential to all families and especially so for young children. Fr. Samson may not be from Sioux Falls but he reflected that, “I’ve never had a hard time finding people in the church who are full of faith and who are friendly and who are kind. In a Catholic Church, you’re never too far away from God and home… We sometimes fall into this mentality of ‘I have to do everything myself.’ That’s especially true when people talk about faith.” Our faith community is vital to push us closer to God, and Fr. Samson values the community that has been built in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.

CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS LEGACY LEVEL Al and Linda Hartmann While neither Al nor Linda Hartmann knew a single soul when they first came to Sioux Falls in 1974, there is no doubt that Sioux Falls has become their home. Their two children, Stephanie (’93) and Ryan (’95), attended St. Mary Elementary and graduated from O’Gorman High School. Linda remembers that “we wanted our children to have a faith-based education. It’s been a lifelong reward. Both Stephanie and Ryan, now in their mid-forties, still have that same faith-foundation that was built during their time at O’Gorman.” The sense of community found within their church and school is something that the Hartmann’s have treasured. “When we first moved to Sioux Falls, we didn’t know anybody,” stated Al, “St. Mary was a community. It was a family. It was something that we wanted to be a part of. We have since developed lifelong friendships and relationships with members of this community.” The Hartmanns also appreciate the quality education that O’Gorman students receive each year. Linda commented, “The kids that come here really want to be here and they really want to learn. I’ve known a few parents whose children were struggling with the public schools and transferred to O’Gorman. O’Gorman changes children into young adults.” O’Gorman continues to impact the Hartmann family even to this day. Linda credits the faith-based education her children received, in addition to her and Al’s homelife, to Stephanie and Ryan’s continued participation in the Catholic faith. The Hartmanns believe it is vital to give back to the schools for all they have given to their family. Al says, “In order to maintain the excellence of the institution, it has to be financially supported somehow. The teachers need to be supported as do the buildings and the students. Right now, the biggest need is teachers, so we have changed to giving back to the teachers.” Overall, the Hartmanns reflected that the best thing about O’Gorman is the opportunity to give students a Catholic education. They explained that by attending a Catholic School, a student receives six days of Catholic teachers rather than just one from Sundays in church. Al says, “A Catholic education is promoting the Catholic way of life and tying it into the educational process. Our children still remark about what they learned from their O’Gorman teachers and what they’ve taken back into their own communities. O’Gorman shaped their sense of belonging and became a part of our family.”

PRINCIPAL LEADER LEVEL Alex Anderson
CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS
Alex Anderson graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2006 and then attended the University of Sioux Falls to complete his undergraduate degree in Secondary History Education and Special Education. When planning his future teaching/ coaching career, young Alex Anderson “never thought once about applying at O’Gorman”. But, as fate would have it, Alex would apply for the Academic Services Coordinator position at OGHS in 2010. Fast forward ten years and Anderson is the Assistant Principal at O’Gorman High School. Anderson says, “Now, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. I can pinpoint a handful of things that have changed my life. Getting a job here was one of them.” What Anderson values most about O’Gorman is the community. “O’Gorman is not just this building or not just a brand. Of course, we have a beautiful building and a well-known brand. But we are a community! The students that I interact with, the teachers that I work with and the parents that we’re partnering with all play an active role in creating a community of people,” says Anderson. Even before Anderson started at O’Gorman, he knew there was something special here. While participating in athletics in his youth, Anderson made friends with teammates who attended Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. He says, “My interactions with those guys who went to O’G really reflected that this was a special community. But it wasn’t until I started working here that I truly understood how special this community is.” Anderson has enjoyed the opportunity to grow in his own faith while working at O’Gorman. He says, “In high school and even in college, there are so many ways for you to get involved with your faith. It was easy to be active in my faith through youth groups, retreats and mission trips while I was a student. After graduating, you navigate your faith differently. There were pieces around me to help me grow in my faith, but working here helped me turn my faith into a lifestyle.” Anderson reflected on the religious support that he receives from members of this community. He says, “[At O’Gorman] there are so many people who help support you and hold you accountable and pray for you. When my grandfather passed away recently, so many people came up to me and told me they were praying for me. I’m lucky to be surrounded by good people filled with faith.” This is Anderson’s tenth year at O’Gorman High School with the last four serving as Assistant Principal. Anderson’s passion for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has been shared with his entire family. His oldest son, Owen (3), attended Holy Spirit Preschool for the 2020-2021 school year. Anderson spoke of his confidence in the excellence of our schools and the foundation our schools will build in his children. He explained that, “I know that his teachers, administrators and everyone at school is helping him grow in his faith.” There was no doubt as to where Anderson would choose to send his children. Anderson even recruited his wife, Paige, to join the O’Gorman community. She works as a school counselor for St. Lambert and Holy Spirit Elementary schools. Looking back at the past decade, Anderson says, “[O’G] has helped me go from somebody who knew God to somebody who is now experiencing God. I don’t ever feel like I’m going to work...I feel as though I’m fulfilling my vocation.”

CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS EDUCATOR LEVEL Margaret Jarding Margaret Jarding (OG ’75), a long-standing staff member at St. Michael Elementary, is the type of teacher that we all wish we could have had. She is not only blessed as a talented teacher, but also as a woman who lives her faith boldly and encourages her students to do the same. As a teacher of 42 years, Margaret has dedicated her life to educating and guiding her students to God in the classroom. “Teaching is a very rewarding profession. It’s a lot of work but being able to watch children develop and blossom…it’s very fulfilling. We don’t know God’s plan for any of us, but we do know that every child is a gift from God,” she says. Through both the good times and challenging times, Margaret has found joy in her students. Margaret said, “We have high expectations of our students. We enable them to grow academically but more importantly it’s the faith aspect. It’s giving the students tools that they need to become the best versions of themselves. It’s important for us as educators to see the gifts that our students have been given by God and to teach them to use those gifts to glorify God and bring it back to Him.” Margaret enjoys teaching her students about God, but through her many years of teaching 2nd grade, Margaret’s favorite endeavor has been to teach and prepare her students for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. She says, “I teach my students that the greatest gift we will ever receive is the Holy Eucharist, and we get to receive it again and again. My personal faith has grown tremendously through that instruction.” In addition to the students, Margaret cherishes the close-knit community and the relationships she has with her classmates, professional colleagues and school families. When Margaret’s husband, Jim, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, the Bishop O’Gorman community embraced the Jarding family with their support and prayers. “That was a blessing from God that we were able to have that kind of support. It gave us the strength, courage and the grace we needed to get through a very difficult and challenging time for our entire family,” says Jarding. Margaret took a leave from work to take care of Jim and be with family while he underwent treatment. She expressed her gratitude for that time away that allowed her to focus on her husband throughout his final days on this Earth. After Jim’s death, Margaret had the opportunity to return to St. Michael Elementary as an Educational Assistant. She says, “I could not have imagined, after his death, going back to work [anywhere] else.” Margaret has been in the teaching profession for over four decades. Her passion for education and her love of children shines out in every word. Margaret reflected on her career and said, “I’ve been blessed in all the years I’ve been teaching to be able to have God as the center of my life. It’s been a true gift.”

CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS ALUMNI LEVEL Rory Kelly The O’Gorman community means everything to Rory Kelly, O’Gorman High School class of 1995. As the owner of CellOnly, a local Verizon Wireless authorized dealer, Rory attributes much of his success to the foundation O’Gorman built. “There’s no way I’d be where I am without the Catholic school system,” he says. “As a kid, I walked a rocky road. Frankly, I could have walked a dark path but the teachers at O’Gorman were shining examples of the kind of person I wanted to become. I was most impacted by the many friends, parents and teachers who took me under their wings.” And Rory believes the hardest job in the world is to build a faith foundation for adolescents to build their lives on, saying, “Kids tend to stray away from almost everything when we hit a certain age.” The key is the strength of the community spread through all of the schools. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools starts with an award-winning preschool program and continues until they’re seniors at the high school. And it isn’t just the remarkable teachers or staff, either. The grade school students spend impactful time with the high school students as Christ-like role models. “My elementary children already talk about going to O’Gorman!” The all-system Mass, the athletic events, and the vibrant relationships are evident in every one of the seven campuses! Bishop O’Gorman is truly a thriving community within the community of Sioux Falls. For the Kelly family, it is incredibly important to support the schools and give back to the institution that has given so much to them. Rory says, “I hope that I continue to make a good living so I can keep giving back to O’Gorman. It makes me feel like I’m paying it forward.” Not only are the Kelly’s generous with their financial support, but they also invest their time in various volunteering opportunities. “The Catholic schools are not meant just for the children, they are for the parents, too. Part of the magic is when parents get involved and get to know other parents. The more involved we are, the richer our kids’ educational experience will be. Catholic schools work best when the whole family is involved—going to games, helping raise money, participating in committees and more.” In Rory’s mind, O’Gorman is a network of families who are better together. “O’Gorman taught me the importance of being authentic, accepting of others, and humble. Because my teachers accepted me for who I was I was able to accept myself. This is transformative! One of the hardest things to do is love yourself, and I feel that O’Gorman helped me start the process of figuring out how to do that, and in turn, better love others. I’m eternally humbled because this community is the linchpin for any moderate success I’ve achieved as an adult—even twenty-plus years after graduating.” For the Kelly family, the Bishop O’Gorman school system gave a gift that can never be repaid, but they’re committed to spending the rest of their lives trying.

CUMULATIVE GIVING LEVELS PATRON LEVEL Aaron and Dua Anderson We’ve all heard that it takes a village to raise a child. When Aaron and Dua Anderson moved to Sioux Falls, they had no idea of the village they would find within Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. While neither Aaron nor Dua were Catholic, they both attended Creighton University in Omaha, NE and saw the importance of cultivating a strong moral compass and a solid faith foundation. In the fall of 2013, Aaron and Dua moved their eldest daughter from a local public school to St. Mary Elementary. After several years of being a part of our school community, the Anderson family officially joined our faith community last year and are now active members of St. Mary Parish. Fast forward to 2021 and the Anderson’s “can’t imagine’’ what their lives or the lives of their children would look like without our Catholic schools. Aaron and Dua have since moved their five children (Elise, Howard, Harrison, Perry and Margaret) to our schools. The Andersons say they have found a supportive community and family here. They are grateful for a school system that feels like home, even when they were Protestant. Aaron stressed the fact that “O’Gorman [provides] a place for every child, whether that child is Catholic or not’’. The Anderson’s village of support now includes the teachers, administrators, janitors and staff who interact with their children not only during each school day but who are also present at Mass on Sundays. Dua is appreciative of the impact that our teachers have had on her children and on each child in the classroom. Having a different faith from their teachers never made a difference in the quality of instruction that the Anderson children received. “The teachers at O’Gorman find the good in every kid and take the time to nurture the goodness that they see,” says Dua. “All of the staff still loved my kids even though they weren’t Catholic.” Their relationships with their teachers have only grown deeper since the Andersons converted to Catholicism. In 2021, the Andersons started the Aaron and Dua Anderson Family Endowment to support teacher salaries. Aaron and Dua believe that our teachers “shouldn’t have to choose” between a competitive salary and teaching in a place that feels like home. The Andersons have found their village within the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and haven’t looked back. When asked what they would say to any new families who are considering attending one of our schools, Dua said that “everyone can find a home at O’Gorman”.

Keegan and McCabe Wenande ‘22 Twins Keegan and McCabe Wenande will be starting their senior year this fall at O’Gorman High School. They are long-standing Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School students who attended St. Mary Elementary starting when they were four years old. Keegan says, “Our mother went through the Catholic schools here as did all of our older siblings. We have other relatives who are also in the system. Our family is pretty much engrained here in the school.” Both Keegan and McCabe are involved in a variety of activities at O’Gorman High School. Keegan is involved in baseball, powerlifting, choir and student ambassadors. McCabe participates in oral interp, theater and student ambassadors. McCabe says, “My favorite part of oral interp is performing in the final rounds. When you’re up there, it’s a sigh of relief because you’re in the finals so you already know that you’ve done well.” Things have looked different at school over the past year because of the pandemic, but the Wenande twins try to focus on the good. Oral interp was completely virtual which provided McCabe with a new perspective and new opportunities. McCabe says, “It’s interesting to see the creative ways that they’ve worked to keep competitions going. I was able to participate more with out-of-state competitions than I normally would because there wasn’t that barrier of having to travel to competitions.”
Keegan reflected on having to attend school virtually last spring because of the pandemic and expressed his gratitude for being back in the classroom for the 2020-2021 school year. He says, “When doing e-learning, you could set your own schedule and do your schoolwork when you wanted. But honestly, with school, the benefit is that it’s so much more fun to learn with people around you. Seeing the people you know experiencing school with you, gives you more motivation to go on!” Keegan laughed, “[E-learning] makes you realize you don’t actually want a longer summer.” The Wenande twins are grateful for the opportunities O’Gorman has given them to grow in their faith while reaching for academic success. The twins expressed gratitude for being in an environment where students can be supported in their efforts to reach their academic and religious goals. McCabe says, “At O’Gorman, striving for success and taking your education really seriously is the norm. O’Gorman, in general, is an environment where everyone is striving for achievement.” Keegan adds, “In the end, [your hard work] all pays off. O’Gorman does a good job of keeping you focused and teaching you to value your Catholic education.” McCabe dreams of being a lawyer one day and Keegan hopes to find a career that challenges him to think critically. Both twins are confident that O’Gorman has set them up for success.

“Like so many things, every passing year, the value of my Catholic education impacts me more deeply. As a kid, I took O’Gorman for granted. But as an adult, I can see the foundation a Catholic education laid for me, truly enabling me to go where I wanted to go.” - Rory Kelly ‘95

A DIFFERENT SIDE TO A PARTNERSHIP Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has maintained a long standing professional and mutually beneficial partnership with Avera. Our partnership is a natural one as Avera is dedicated to our community and to providing quality services guided by Christian values. This partnership creates many opportunities for our students to learn more about the medical field and for our athletes to receive expedited medical care through the athletic trainers who work for Avera. Athletic excellence has always been an important aspect of O’Gorman Junior High and High School. Our students, coaches and staff continuously exceed expectations and perform to the best of their abilities despite any outside circumstances. Last spring, everyone’s world changed with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The undefeated girls basketball team lost their opportunity to win the state championship, the spring athletic season was cancelled and school moved to a virtual platform. Our students and staff demonstrated tenacity and determination to ensure that the 2020-2021 school year wouldn’t face the same fate. “Our goal was to keep players in school and back [in the game],” Tiffany Giese, athletic trainer through Avera, stated. Giese has spent the past four years as the Athletic Trainer for O’Gorman Athletics. She works with the football team and basketball teams, but partners with fellow athletic trainer Sarah Eichacker to ensure all teams are cared for and monitored. Tiffany Giese and Sarah Eichacker
“The students were awesome. They wanted to be here. They were good about wearing masks, using hand-sanitizer and bringing their own water bottles.” Giese reminisced.
Yet all of these safety protocols hindered the students from forming traditional bonds as a team: no high-fives, physically distancing themselves, no team gatherings or meals and limited locker room time. O’Gorman Boys Basketball coach, Derek Robey, stated “It started last summer during camps and opengym. With the recommendation of the ‘Return to Learn/Play’ committee, the athletes wore masks to and from the gym, we took daily temperature checks and we had a set of daily questions to administer to each participant. During the activity, we as coaches would wipe down and disinfect all basketballs and shared equipment. It seemed like everyone just got accustomed to this new way of life. It was just the summer norm. A huge shout out to Tiffany Giese, our school athletic trainer (and all of the Avera personnel), for leading the way and for all the work setting up the guidelines and protocols for each sport. I never once felt abandoned. Everything was consistent and monitored.”

Having been furloughed during the spring season and helping with initial COVID testing, both Giese and Eichacker gained an appreciation for their role throughout the pandemic and their everyday role with O’Gorman. While neither trainer minds the untraditional hours and long days, the pandemic showed a different side of the Avera/O’Gorman partnerships. Being included in communication about procedures, in which students were not allowed to play due to close contact or receiving positive test results, both trainers appreciated the support that they received from O’Gorman’s administrators. Giese said, “Joan Mahoney [Principal] and Steve Kueter [Director, Activities/Athletics] were both really good about keeping us updated on students who had to be out. The main goal was to get the students back on track even if they had to miss ten days of school/practice due to quarantine.” The partnership provides our student-athletes and coaches access to Avera athletic trainers and physicians to keep them at the top of their game. This asset to the school community was utilized with the Return to Play protocol initiated by the South Dakota State High School Athletic Association. Giese and Eichacker were able to do their dayto-day work of pre- and post-injury care while additionally providing coaches with preventative tools such as thermometers, masks, hand sanitizer and individual water bottles. Kent Kolsrud, O’Gorman Girls Basketball coach, was disappointed that his undefeated 2020 season was cut short, but credits the students and the precautions taken to minimize the spread of COVID-19 as to why his team didn’t have an active case during their season, “These kids all have worked so hard and we just wanted them to get the opportunity to showcase their talents and play for their school.” Coach Robey found the pandemic motivating during the season and said, “I looked forward to the many obstacles that I knew would come up throughout the year. I felt challenged to help lead the way for the boys’ basketball program. Throughout our season, we did have a few kids and coaches test positive for the COVID virus. Again, with the help of our trainers and school personnel, we handled all the cases with a recommended and consistent protocol. We all wanted to do what was best for the families involved, keeping confidentiality and safety first and foremost.” Having the athletic trainers available to the staff and receiving the support of the staff is a cohesive relationship that is mutually beneficial. Giese spoke of her gratitude for working at O’G, “O’Gorman itself is a community and it feels like we work within that community.” Everyone is ready to close the book on the 2020-2021 school year and move forward. We are thrilled at the idea of returning to normalcy in the upcoming school year and we look forward to the various opportunities that are available to our students through our continued partnership with Avera. 63
