ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023
Dear Families, Friends, and Supporters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools,
As the 2022-2023 school year wraps up, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the year and thank all those that work tirelessly and give generously to support the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as Chair of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board this year. I feel blessed to work with the dedicated administration and board members that give so much of their time and talent to support the school system. Thank you!
Thank you to the principals, teachers, and all school staff for your commitment and dedication to the students and families. 2022-2023 was another successful year. Our students found remarkable success throughout the year in the classroom, on the stage, and on the field. The accomplishments of our students could not have been achieved without the devoted efforts of the faculty and staff from elementary through high school.
Thank you! Though those two words do not seem to be enough to fully express my gratitude and appreciation to Bishop DeGrood and the Pastors, along with their parishes, for their prayers, spiritual guidance, financial support, and leadership for the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. We are also thankful for the presence of Pro Ecclesia Sancta religious community in our schools. Their presence has been a gift to our students, faculty, and administration as they assist with retreats, small groups, campus ministry, and other faith formation opportunities.
Thank you to our families, alumni, and community supporters for continuing to support Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools through your generous financial contributions and gifts of your time and talent by volunteering throughout the system. Also, thank you for your prayers and belief in Catholic education!
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools have been a model for Catholic schools and Catholic education in South Dakota and beyond. Building on our solid foundation and looking toward the future for the school system, the administration and school board focused this past school year on developing a strategic plan. Entitled “Anchored In Our Faith,” the strategic plan builds on the foundation established under the prior strategic plans. Keeping the mission and vision in mind throughout the strategic planning process the preferred future for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools focused on Ministry: Catholic Life and Culture; Excellence: Academics, Faculty & Staff; Leadership & Governance: Board and Committee efficacy; and Operational Vitality: Enrollment Management, Facilities, Advancement, and Finance. Now the real work begins! We are excited for the direction and guidance the strategic plan provides as we plan for the future of our beloved Catholic school system.
Thank you for your support of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Your generosity is invaluable in fulfilling the mission…to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence.
God Bless,
Jennifer EdwardsBishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Board Chair

Our Mission...
From the Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls
Dear Friends, Parents, and Supporters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools,
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is having a relationship with Jesus, which is the heart of our faith. Perhaps nothing we do is more important than forming our children as missionary disciples, for in Christ we are set free – free from sin, ignorance, and death and free for truth, beauty, and goodness!
Throughout the history of the Church, educating children in freedom has been the urgent goal of Catholic education (hence, the traditional “liberal arts” – liberal, meaning free). Here in the Sioux Falls area, we are blessed to have eight vibrant Catholic schools, which provide a “community of faith and learning” where freedom in Christ is integrated into lessons and activities every day.
The students at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools are blessed to receive an outstanding education from some of the best educators in the region. Our faculty and staff continue to help our students outperform their peers in the city, state, and the nation academically.
However, there is more to being a well-rounded, moral individual than traditional academics and extracurriculars. One of the benefits of an integrated Catholic education is that it provides an environment of wonder, where the hearts of children can be stirred by truth, and where they can grow into strong, faith-filled adults whose relationships with Jesus will inspire all that they do in the world.
As you read through this year’s annual report, you will see details of how the virtues instilled in Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School students have helped shape our young people and prepare them to be disciples of Christ. You will also hear from our supporters about the value they place on Catholic education helping to form their families and the impact it has had on their lives. Your contributions of time, talent, treasure, and prayer have helped cultivate a culture of Catholic education for our students. We appreciate you and we bless you.
In the love of the Lord,
Most Reverend Donald E. DeGrood Bishop of Sioux FallsFrom the President of Bishop O † Gorman Catholic Schools
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends,
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is extraordinary. After 20 years, now more than ever, I firmly believe and am confident that our schools stand apart from others within the state, region, and nation, by offering a profoundly unique educational experience. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is hallmarked by a deep commitment to our Catholic faith, an unparalleled educational experience, and a deeply committed and vibrant school spirit and culture, all of which culminates in a transformative journey for every one of our amazing students.
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools combine the best of Catholic school tradition with current educational best practices into one unique, rich experience. Our faculty and the depth and rigor of the educational experiences they deliver are second to none. Our approach to educating the whole child through appropriate technology and support programs continuously challenges our students to think critically and creatively. All this exists in a warm, welcoming, and intentionally Catholic environment that prioritizes raising ethical, kind, worldly citizens who will be our next servant leaders. Simply put, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools graduates are ready for the world that awaits them, and we could not be more proud.
During this past academic school year, we developed a strategic plan which brings to the surface a compelling vision and practical plan that will move the school community toward its desired future. This preferred future for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is focused on Ministry, Faith Formation, Community, Excellence, and Vitality. These aspects of school life, integrated with the “National Standards and Benchmarks of Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools” provide the foundation for the priorities, strategic goals, and action steps that comprise the “Anchored in Our Faith” strategic growth plan. We have provided more information about our strategic plan within this annual report.
It is in the spirit of stewardship that this plan comes forth, to prudently manage the resources and gifts God has given to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools: to make disciples for Christ, to evangelize students and their families, and to form young people capable and ready to transform their world. I hope you are as proud and excited about all the wonderful things happening at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools as I am. Finally, THANK YOU for your investment in the 2600+ students of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and for choosing to partner with administrators, educators, staff members, alumni, parents, and friends in the vital mission of Catholic education. By sharing your gifts of time, talent, and treasure with our students, you have made a direct, lasting, and positive impact upon their lives. As the ultimate beneficiaries of your generosity, our students and staff are truly grateful for your kindness and support. You are in my prayers of thanksgiving every day for all that you have done and continue to do for our Knights Family! With continued prayers and gratitude,

“Fundraising is a very rich and beautiful activity. It is a confident, joyful, and hope filled expression of ministry. In ministering to each other, each from the riches that he or she possesses, we work together for the full coming of God’s kingdom.”
– A Spirituality of Fundraising by Henri J.M. Nouwen
Remembering the goal of our Catholic schools is to get children to Heaven, it is easier to invite others to join the mission: to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence. Who wouldn’t want to see children happy and filled with joy? Each conversation, letter of invitation, and opportunity I have to connect with a donor is an invitation to work together and continue to develop the whole person.
This past year the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic schools’ donor community has continued to pledge support to this mission. Throughout the year our programs, sponsorships, and partnerships have flourished, new business and new invitations have been made, and wonderful experiences have abounded. The generosity of our donors has included the ability to develop a strategic design that lays out a plan for the next five years.
As we looking forward to the 2023-2024 school year, I expect to see the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools develop, change, and flourish with in the Sioux Falls community. I am excited to work with each person who desires to propel us into the future and help to get our children to the pearly gates of Heaven.
Liz Myscofski*In addition, $629,000 was added to the Development Budget for the Annual SSI (Staff Salary Initiative).
• $468,000 was raised through Development fundraising efforts.
• $161,000 was contributed through investment distributions from The Living Stones Endowment from the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation.
From the Director of Admissions
Greetings from the admissions office! I am happy to report that we have seen a rebound in enrollment post-pandemic, particularly with our youngest students. We concluded the 2022-2023 school year with 53 more students than we concluded the year prior. We are currently on track to increase enrollment once again heading into the 2023-2024 school year.
Enrollment opens annually in February. Families of students currently enrolled are first allowed the opportunity to re-enroll as well as apply for new siblings. This year, a special effort was made to give families registered in our Sioux Falls parishes the opportunity to enroll before opening it to the rest of the general public. This proved successful as many of our parish families took advantage of the early enrollment option.
As our city is struggling to provide enough adequate daycare options for working families, our preschool numbers have been and remain robust. We offer both part- and full-time options for our 3-5-year olds. As we can accommodate a 6:45am-6:00pm schedule for students, we have seen more families choosing to send their children to our preschools full-time. Several of our preschools were meeting capacities within the first week of opening enrollment in February.
That trend has carried forward in welcoming large kindergarten classes in recent years. As smaller class sizes have progressed through the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, our enrollment at O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School has fluctuated accordingly. With the addition of a fourth public high school and new middle schools in the city of Sioux Falls, our enrollment trends continued to differ from historic rates.
As we embark upon our new strategic plan, Enrollment Management will be a primary goal. We will be focusing our efforts on increasing recruitment and improving retention for all grade levels.
2022-2023 Enrollment
We have a 95% retention rate of students K-12.
86% of our students are Catholic Preschool - 12.
29% of our students have alumni parents.
Over 40% of our students receive some type of tuition assistance.

We believe that Catholic schools are the best investment we can offer our children! In today’s world, it is all the more important to have our kids in an environment that helps support their faith and morals/values. We will do whatever it takes to make sure our kids have the opportunity to grow in their faith alongside their friends.

Bishop O † Gorman Catholic Schools 2022-2023 Staff
During the 2022-23 academic year, the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Administration and School Board embarked on the process of developing a strategic growth plan. Through an extensive evaluation of the current environment of the school system and community, goals and strategies were developed to address the areas of opportunity, growth, and the evolution of Catholic education.
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools engaged with a nationally-recognized consulting firm, Meitler, to form a compelling vision and practical plan that will move the school community toward its desired future. This vision for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is focused on five pillars: Ministry, Faith Formation, Community, Excellence, and Vitality, to make disciples of Christ.
These aspects of school life, integrated with the National Standards and Benchmarks of Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools provide the foundation for the priorities, goals, and strategies that comprise the Anchored in Our Faith strategic growth plan.
This plan builds upon the work that was completed with our past strategic plans which focused on Faith, Programs, Personnel, Growth, and Finances. The goals and strategies found within the Anchored in Our Faith strategic plan are designed to assist us in continuing our emphasis on providing a faith-filled, challenging educational environment across all grade levels that establishes a solid foundation for each and every child’s future success.
Every school was visited by the Meitler consultant team and vital information was gathered through meetings with the principals, pastors of the elementary schools, faculty and staff, students, and parents. In addition, community demographics were collected and relevant parish and school data was compiled in order to create a complete picture of those trends affecting each of the schools and the system as a whole. The strategic plan included feedback from: The Most Reverend Bishop Donald E. DeGrood,
school board and standing committees, school leaders, pastors, principals, diocesan leaders, Foundation members, parents, and various community members. After extensive information was collected, school leaders and others participated in key findings presentations where strengths were celebrated, issues and priorities identified, and opportunities for improvement and growth were developed.
This information was shared in multiple forums and used by the Planning Task Force and Steering Committee to form an initial and subsequent drafts. The strategic plan was presented to the School Board in April, 2023 with a final approval occurring in May, 2023. Prioritizing and organizing of the goals were finalized in June, 2023. Implementation of the strategies are currently under the leadership of administration and school board while working in collaboration with the standing committees, principals, and directors.
The Anchored in Our Faith strategic plan would not have been possible without the tremendous support and assistance from the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community. Thank you to the dedicated individuals who have given of their time, talent, and resources to develop this plan to shape the future of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.

VIRTUES in
Virtues are special graces given to us by God helping us to decipher the difference between right and wrong and to cope with difficult situations; however, we are not born knowing how to strengthen these gifts on our own. In today’s world, so much information is at our children’s fingertips influencing their integrity, morality, attitude, and behavior toward life, and everything around them. Catechizing and instilling appropriate virtues in our children is important for this very reason. Observing the actions and listening to positive reinforcement of virtues is how our children learn to strengthen those graces.
Our role as a school is not only to teach academics but to create lifelong Catholic missionary disciples. Similarly, being a parent does not mean providing only material possessions for survival and being physically present in our children’s lives but also to help them reach Heaven. Teaching our children true virtues that help them grow into successful and benevolent adults is a role in which both parents and Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools share.
Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is more than an educational system with exceptional academics and outstanding extracurricular activities. We shape the whole person by including faith and personal development skills, and at the heart of that foundation is teaching virtues.
At the start of the 2022-2023 school year, a new virtue program was introduced to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools: The Disciple of Christ, Education in Virtue Program. We are called to be witnesses and to live a joyful, virtuous life as followers of Christ. Virtues provide meaning to living a well-ordered and disciplined lifestyle because each person is created to live in harmony with God, creation, oneself, and others, altogether creating true happiness.
The Disciple of Christ, Education in Virtue Program, produced by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, offers a structure to learn, guide, pray, and live each of the cardinal and daughter virtues in daily life. Lessons provide students the meaning of each virtue so they can come to understand:
• What a virtue looks like and sounds like
• Opposing traits of a virtue
• Ways to cultivate a virtue so it becomes integrated into who they are
• Saints as models and intercessors of a virtue
• Scripture passages about a virtue
• Prayers to call upon God’s grace for each person trying to grow in a virtue
Students at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools have been learning about and practicing a daughter virtue each month. In the first year of this three-year program, they have learned about Prudence, Docility, Gratitude, Generosity, Patience, Perseverance, Self-Control, Honesty, and Circumspection.
Each individual school has a different way of implementing the virtues. Monthly assemblies, student behavior redirection, virtue recognition awards, newsletters to educate parents, and student faith families are a few examples of how the schools are entwining the virtue program into their daily school routine.
Regan Manning, Principal at Holy Spirit Elementary, gets creative.
“Each teacher has a bucket of beans in their classrooms and when they see a particular student demonstrating the virtue that month they give the student a ‘virtue bean’ to put in their class’ virtue cup. On Fridays, a representative from each classroom brings up all the beans that their classroom has collected during the week and adds them to our virtue tub. This tub is displayed throughout the week in our school foyer so that students are reminded to practice that virtue throughout the day.”
Jessica Williams, a fourth-grade teacher at Christ the King Elementary, explains how she brings the virtues into her classroom. “I use the virtues curriculum and have started incorporating activities, such as a group cup stacking game, to teach perseverance and patience to help students learn how these virtues are important in everyday situations,” she said.
At St. Lambert Elementary, third-grade teacher McKenzie Docken uses a bulletin board to show what the virtue should look like and sound like. “I write the prayer with each virtue on anchor chart paper and we say the prayer each day,” she said. The sixth graders watch virtue videos and try to bring them into character discussions in Literature. Even the Kindergarteners are recognized when they are practicing a virtue.
The presence of the Pro Ecclesia Sancta (PES) Sisters at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools play a huge role in strengthening these virtues. Teachers and administrators of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools also take part in this program. Sr. Denisse Bocanegra, one of the PES Sisters, explains, “Our objective was to help them see that living a virtuous life in the classroom
comes from our own personal lives, hence the importance of having a prayer life and personal relationship with God.”
One of their sessions examined how living a virtuous life can help them find balance and joy in their daily vocation as teachers in the classroom. The PES Sisters shared with the staff about the virtues that are key for being a teacher: generosity, patience, and kindness. The teachers were given a list of activities to help the children learn these virtues and others.
The Central Office of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools also closes for half an hour once a month to give staff an opportunity to learn more about the monthly virtues through speakers, meditation, and prayer.
At Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, we are partnering with parents in laying the foundation of faith in our students’ lives. This virtue program is playing a major role in building that foundation. We are shaping these children into virtue seeking, professional learners so that they can continue to share their knowledge of virtues beyond our school walls.
The Catholic School System built a foundation for me to continue to a higher level of education. Not only did it foster a community that pushed me to pursue my dreams, but it gave me a place I can always return to.

I like that my school not only teaches you what you need to know when you’re older and skills that you will need to learn, but it also teaches you about what Jesus Christ wants you to do and how He wants you to live.
Staebell Megan Family Liaison
Among the numerous faculty and staff supporting the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is a little-known position that has a huge impact on some of our most vulnerable families. Megan Staebell has worked as the Family Liaison for the last six years and in her tenure with the school system she has seen the number of families reaching out to her for assistance grow tremendously. Her office may be at St. Lambert Elementary, but she says it is important to remember that she works with students and families at all eight Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.
Megan was a stay-at-home mom to her twin daughters and then helped care for her father as he battled cancer before stepping into her role with the schools. “For me, working here was kind of a God-thing to be honest.” She had been struggling with the death of her father and trying to be intentional about growing her faith. The job opening continued to be placed in front of her and eventually she decided to reach out and inquire. Megan says that the interview process for the position was already underway, but the Director of Human Resources encouraged her to come in for an interview. According to Megan, working for the schools was, “where God wanted me to be at that time. It’s a calling, what I was meant to do, which has been a true blessing in my life.”
She started as a part-time position working out of St. Lambert Elementary and while she has moved to working four full days, she is really on-call all the time. She uses a work cell phone so families know they can reach out any time, any day. She does her best to balance her work life and home life, but she knows that our school families often need her most outside of working hours.
The number of families she works with is always changing but has been steadily increasing in recent years. “The big jump was when families started to know and trust me, it took a
couple of years. I’m a safe place, someone to confide in and then they tell their friends. It’s been a slow, steady increase.” During the 2022-2023 school year, Megan had 194 students she worked with consistently from 109 families.
As the family liaison, Megan wears a number of different hats. Some days she is working on helping families find housing, other days she is helping them find resources in the community, such as attorneys or tax accountants. “I don’t have time to be bored. I love it!” There has been an increase in the types of help she provides. Every year there seems to be something different that is the main issue families are facing. “Hunger could be an issue, the next year it’s employment, or finding housing. You can see how the economy evolves around that too. You can see the cost of living increasing and that changes the needs, there’s a pattern to it.” There is always something new that comes up and, in those instances, Megan walks into the counselor’s office saying, “Guess what hat I get to wear today!”
One of the biggest and most consistent roles she plays with families is to help facilitate communication between families and the schools. There are over 14 different languages spoken in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School system, especially in the elementary schools. In Megan’s opinion, “All of our preschool teachers are saints.” Sometimes there are children who come into the schools not speaking any English and the teachers work with them to learn basic words such as bathroom, hungry, book, and so on. Megan says, “It’s a blessing [for the students] to know the two languages. We want their families to continue to teach them their family’s primary language and we will focus on English here at school.”
While most of the families she works with speak fluent English, they do not always read the language. This can cause a breakdown in communication between parents and teachers. One example Megan uses is regarding school planners. The elementary age students are required to have parents sign the planners each night, but many of the parents are working at night and not home to do so. When notes come home from
teachers inquiring about this, the parents do not always understand what the teachers are asking. It is not that the parents do not care, or are uninterested in what their children are doing in school, they simply cannot read what the teacher is sending home. Many times, Megan will contact the family via phone to insure they have received the note and understand what is needed. Megan works closely with our teachers and principals who make her aware when there is a communication issue.
Another area that Megan sees as a consistent issue is hunger. In Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools there are 139 students receiving free lunches and 80 students receiving reduced cost lunches. This only covers the main meal; however, it does not cover an extra milk or a second helping for those growing students who may need a little extra nutrition. Many of these students are still hungry at lunch time and often go up for seconds. This means they are incurring lunch bills that need to be paid and the families sometimes struggle to cover the costs. Megan says she has assisted with a snack program at one of the elementary schools which, with the blessing of a financial donation, provided snacks to students who may need them. It is difficult to pay attention and learn when stomachs are rumbling.
The students and families that come to Megan for help and support are diverse in their background. Many of them are immigrants who are still learning how society and its systems in the United States work. Other families are experiencing job losses or familial situations that make it harder for the children to focus in school. “There are also families that aren’t immigrants, who are just having a really hard time. Parents get divorced, there’s abuse in homes. Just because we are a Catholic school does not mean we are protected from that.”
Regardless of the background or issue, Megan steps in to help wherever she can.
As word spreads about what she does and that she is there for all the schools, the number of families and students reaching out has grown. She had a family who needed a first communion dress and heard that she may be able to help. “I can send out an email and know that I will find what is needed. I’m so grateful for the support that we get for our families.” Megan wants families to know, “You don’t have to do this alone, everything we talk about is confidential. Unless it’s an unsafe situation, I don’t have to tell anyone what is going on. There’s no judgement.”
Megan is currently creating some classes she can offer to families for next year; these are not meant to be “how-to parent” classes but how to help make things easier for parents. For example, she is looking at creating an easy cooking class to include easy prep meals, no reheat meals, and meals that children can make on their own. She also wants to have a class on banking to explain why we have banks and the basics of personal finance such as balancing a checking account. Another class she would like to hold for parents is on basic home maintenance. She wants these to be focused on good life lessons for everyone, regardless of a family’s past lived experiences.
The Family Liaison position has grown over the years because of Megan’s dedication and the support that Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School families give to each other. With everything that Megan sees and helps families with, the constant is, “We have amazing families and I am so proud of how far they’ve come. I want people to realize that Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools has a real heart for those in need and we are a true family.”

The Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Development Office and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation work together to provide tuition assistance for faith-based education, compensation to our dedicated staff, and resources to enhance our facilities and technology. Both organizations are working together to build a community of faith and learning for students today and in the future by promoting Gospel values and academic excellence.
The Development Office is responsible for raising money annually to help support the day-to-day operations of our school system. This includes raising funds for tuition assistance, staff salaries and benefits, along with capital improvements. It is also very important that the Development Office create events that can build our community.
The Foundation is responsible for raising money for the future by focusing on establishing long-term investments with annual distributions used to ensure a Catholic education will be available for current students in coming years as well as for future generations. The Foundation annually seeks new members and sustainer gifts in addition to the annual Sporting Clays Shoot, which helps support the yearly operations of the Foundation office.
To the left are the areas in which each corporation supports the overall school system.
A message from the Bishop O † Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation
“All of us can attain to Christian virtue and holiness, no matter in what condition of life we live and no matter what our life work may be.” – St.
Francis de SalesThis beautiful quote from St. Francis de Sales hits close to home for me as I have been reflecting more on the virtues. While we all strive to be holy and to live a life pleasing to the Lord, this can sometimes seem like an overwhelming and unattainable task, especially in today’s secular world. St. Francis de Sales’ hopeful words remind us that everyone has the ability to be a witness to Christ, regardless of where we are at in our spiritual journey.
The new virtue program, The Disciple of Christ, Education in Virtue Program, began this past school year throughout Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, including the Central Office. Two virtues in particular continue to rise to the surface for me as the Executive Director of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation: generosity and gratitude.
Your generosity, along with your continued support, is why the Foundation continues to be successful. Because of your generous gifts to key endowment funds, we are able to support more families with scholarships and tuition assistance, help our dedicated teachers receive competitive salary and benefits, and maintain outstanding technology and facilities.
Our gratitude for your faithful stewardship is heartfelt and humbling. We are grateful for the impact your generosity is having on our young people, including lives forever impacted by our committed educators and relationships deepened with Christ. We cannot thank you enough for helping us sustain our world-class Catholic education for future generations of Knights.
Nicole R. Bruning, MBA, CFRE Executive Director, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools FoundationAs a proud graduate of, and now a parent to children in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School system, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to each one of you for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure to our wonderful community this past year. Your gifts helped support our incredible faculty and staff, through whom we equip our next generation of faith-led students with the knowledge necessary to launch them into their next phase of life. Your contributions allowed us to provide inviting facilities outfitted with up-todate technology. In addition, your support helped to provide an incredible educational opportunity to those who may not be part of our community without scholarships and tuition assistance. Your generosity makes all this possible. What a gift you are!
The support I see from this community every day is nothing short of incredible. Saying ‘thank you’ does not feel sufficient to express my appreciation for all you have done for our schools. I will end this note by saying that your gifts allow us to sustain our cherished community for generations to come. In a world full of new challenges, you have made it possible for us to perpetuate a welcoming, world-class Catholic education to a whole new generation of Knights. THANK YOU!

INVESTMENT POLICY
Investment decisions are made using the following investment guidelines:
• The long term investment objective is to provide reliable and sustainable income for the current needs of stakeholders and perpetuate the resources of the Foundation for future generations of beneficiaries. Therefore, the minimum investment return needs to be sufficient to offset spending and expenses.
• Social and moral guidelines will be followed to avoid investing in companies whose activities either generate a profit or promote social change that conflict with teachings of the Catholic Church. As a result of excluding investment in firms that directly carry out immoral activities, it is the explicit intention to encourage those corporations that seek to protect the sanctity of human life and promote the common good.
• The target asset allocations for the investment portfolio are set forth in the table.
• To maintain the proper allocation, it is the policy of the Foundation to periodically rebalance the portfolio in the event any asset class allocation differs by more than 20% of the stated target.
• A Spending Rate not to exceed 4% of the investment portfolio’s market value each year is appropriate to meet the needs of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. The rate is reviewed periodically in light of evolving trends within the economy.
• No more than 10% of an active manager’s portfolio can be invested in any one security. This does not apply to U.S. Government or agency issues.

Cumulative Giving Levels
The various cumulative giving levels reflect gifts given to both the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Corporation (Development Office) and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation since 1987. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. If there are discrepancies, please accept our apology and bring any errors to our attention so we may correct our records.
BISHOP LEVEL Archbishop Robert Carlson
Archbishop Robert Carlson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended Catholic school, kindergarten through high school, before starting his journey to the priesthood in St. Paul. He was ordained a priest in 1970 and was later appointed bishop in 1983. In 1994, Bishop Carlson was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls where he would remain until 2004. During his time in South Dakota, Bishop Carlson had the opportunity to help with the formation of the Sioux Falls Catholic School System, which would later be rebranded as Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. He was instrumental in bringing all of the schools together and is proud of helping to establishing a singular Junior High School that would easily transition students into O’Gorman High School. “It was a great gift God gave us to be able to do that and I think it’s been a real strength for the diocese over the years.”
In 2004, he was transferred to Saginaw, Michigan before being named the ninth Archbishop of Saint Louis in 2009. He has been retired since 2020.
Catholic education is important to Archbishop Carlson and he has always been a strong supporter of our Catholic school system. “I think my impression always is that the schools did a tremendous job of educating young people. And if a young person is well educated, male or female, that opens up doors for a lifetime.” Archbishop Carlson continues, “I think the religious programs in the various schools have always been very, very strong and because of that I think the vocation trend has continued. I think there is a Catholic culture that is developed in the Diocese of Sioux Falls.”
A vibrant Catholic community is important for the growth of strong moral character in society and having a thriving Catholic school system helps support that. In Archbishop Carlson’s opinion there is a cost to not sending your children to Catholic schools, especially when looking at values and faith. “You know that if someone is in a Catholic school with a good Catholic program, they are going to be stronger in their faith and even if at some point they drop out along the way, the foundation that they have from Catholic school is a channel to bring them back.”
While Archbishop Carlson may be retired, he has not stopped ministering to the people around him. He takes great joy in going out into the community to help wherever he can. He is now chaplain at a Catholic nursing home run by a community of religious sisters where he gets to celebrate Mass every day, as well as anoint the sick and dying. Archbishop Carlson says it is not full-time work but it is a way to stay involved and active in the Catholic community; he is happy to “do whatever the sisters tell me to do.”

RELIGIOUS LEADER LEVEL Fr. Tom Hartman
Growing up in a large Catholic family laid the foundation for Fr. Tom Hartman’s faith life. He and his 11 siblings helped in the family grocery store in Milbank, South Dakota which is where he continued to work until he was 41 years old. In that time, he was married and divorced with two beautiful children. “After years of being divorced, a single dad and dating, my faith life and serving the church is where I found joy. I realized that God has given me a priestly heart, so after my kids graduated high school, we all went to college about the same time.” He was ordained in 2017 after attending Holy Apostle Seminary in Connecticut.
Fr. Hartman is proud of his family and often uses his life and experience outside of being a priest to connect with his parishioners. His oldest child, Isaiah, is married to Megan. They have a son, Camp, and have another baby due in October. His daughter, Natasha, has given him four more grandchildren with her husband Christian: Gavin, Grant, and twins, Maurina and Sienna.
Experiencing what parishioners are experiencing is not something most priests get to do. Fr. Hartman said, “I have many divorced people who will seek me out for advice or those having marriage problems. It’s beautiful to give them a message of hope and healing. I’m also pretty good with children and have raised a couple myself.” He has embraced connecting with families in this unique way.
Attending a Catholic grade school growing up gave Fr. Hartman a great insight to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. He recalls being a third grader and being inspired by a priest who came into his classroom and had fun with the students. When he was first ordained and started working in the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, he became the associate pastor of St. Michael Parish. He then moved to become a pastor at St. Joseph in Turton and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Groton. From there, he was assigned to the Newman Center in Aberdeen. Fr. Hartman is currently the pastor at St. Michael Parish and loves incorporating faith into the students’ daily lessons at St. Michael Elementary. He says, “I hope to create some of those great experiences with the kids that so many priests did for me growing up. Also, faith is so beautifully integrated with education.”
Faith builds the whole person at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and Fr. Hartman wants to continue to share that with students. His hope is that, “students see what a gift they are receiving from their parents in being formed in the ‘whole’ person, both body and soul in our schools.” Fr. Hartman believes that children are the light of the world. As they grow, learn, and develop, his hope is they will see the beauty in the gift that was fostered through Catholic education. The future of Catholic education is important, and Fr. Hartman appreciates the support in the community we have at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.

LEGACY LEVEL Bob and Deb Winkels
Bob and Deb Winkels have supported Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools since enrolling their children at St. Lambert Elementary. Originally from Minnesota, they moved to Sioux Falls in 1976 for Bob’s first job as an architect.
When it was time to enroll their oldest in school, a neighbor suggested they look at St. Lambert Elementary. A Catholic education was natural for Bob and Deb as they both experienced Catholic schools growing up. For Deb, the morals and values she sees being instilled in the students is a beautiful thing to witness. “I love that they learn about God. If they’re living it throughout their education, it fosters an attitude of kindness.” Bob believes the level of respect the students show their peers is due to the incorporation of faith into everyday life.
Over the years the couple has served in various capacities across the school system. Deb was passionate about serving on the elementary school committees, and was particularly fond of chairing her seniors’ All Knighters, which is the last social event the students participate in after graduation.
Bob has been involved in some of the biggest changes and building projects the school system has seen to date including the establishment of our present-day school system and the building of the Recreation Center. He also created the architectural plan for the remodel of O’Gorman High School in 2008. According to Bob, the building project was quite unique. “Most don’t rebuild, they relocate. We looked at various options but this made the most economic sense.” As a parent and leader within the school system, he recognized the importance of incorporating a building process that would cause the least disruption to learning. He says they came close to needing external classrooms but thankfully they were able to build pieces at a time so that students could stay in classrooms as the new building was built.
While those large projects have ended and their children are grown, the Winkels are still tightly connected to the schools. They continue to act in advisory capacities whenever the schools have need and they make sure to frequent all of the different activities the schools provide. “We don’t ever want to miss a play, they’re so good,” Deb remarked. As they watch their grandchildren begin their journey in Catholic education, they are committed to continuing their support of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. For the Winkels, “It’s like coming home when you bring the next generation in.”

PRINCIPAL LEADER LEVEL Teresa Hulscher
Teresa Hulscher was seeking a change but did not necessarily want to go to another public school. Prior to becoming an administrator, she was a fourth-grade teacher in Flandreau, South Dakota for 13 years. From 2008-2022, she was the Elementary Principal and Special Education Director for the Garretson School District. Mrs. Hulscher said, “I signed up to receive job notifications from Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and also had a friend notify me that a position was open.”
The opportunity to share her faith in her work with the students was a huge motivation to make a career change to Catholic education. “When working in the public system, I felt like I was cheating kids when I couldn’t help them see the bigger picture of the most important piece of their formation - a relationship with God. Educators are tasked with developing the whole child and when not able to help them develop spiritually, it’s difficult to do that well.” This is what attracted her to the role of St. Michael Elementary Principal.
Integrating Gospel values into daily instruction was something Mrs. Hulscher was most eager to be a part of as principal. “I want to collaborate with teachers to make sure that we are putting the best structures in place for kids to learn. We need to ensure that schedules, strategies, activities, faith formation, expectations, safety, and everything in between, are at their best for all of our students.” She has goals to make changes where they are needed, look for ways to enhance things that are working, and share new ideas to help make St. Michael Elementary an even better place to learn and grow in one’s faith.
Mrs. Hulscher has enjoyed growing in her faith while working for St. Michael Elementary. “It’s been fun learning more about my faith through the eyes and thoughts of a child. Being able to spend more time each day with intentional praying and witnessing of God’s gifts around us has brought more fulfillment to my work.”
The virtues program has also been an exciting part of her first year. She believes, “The virtues program is what’s missing in public education. Teaching the virtues is more than teaching good character - it’s teaching our children what God desires in each of them. Having a program that supports teachers in teaching the virtues will have great impact on our students.”
“Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is a very rewarding place to work,” Mrs. Hulscher said. “It is driven by its mission to form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through Gospel values and academic excellence. People who are part of the system know and live that every day. I’m blessed to be a part of this community.”

EDUCATOR LEVEL Mary T. Grogan
Mary T. Grogan began her teaching career as a Physical Education teacher in 1983. From 1984-1999 she worked at YES directing the after-school programs. She made the change to teaching third grade at St. Mary Elementary, where she currently teaches second grade. She has been working for the school system for twenty-five years. She has certainly seen change, but what she focuses on is what the schools have always had: a strong sense of faith and community. “There have been many changes throughout the years but what sets us apart are the people invested in the children’s growth in the faith, academics, and community.”
Mrs. Grogan is a proud alumna of O’Gorman High School. When her family moved to Sioux Falls, she attended public school because Christ the King Elementary was full. As soon as her seven siblings reached high school age their parents enrolled them at O’Gorman High School. Mary T. and Wally’s daughters, Sheila and Kerry, both attended Christ the King Elementary and graduated from O’Gorman High School. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Sheila became a teacher at St. Michael Elementary and later joined her mother as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary in 2020.
This upcoming school year, Mrs. Grogan is excited to see three of her five grandchildren old enough to attend the school. She said it is a joy to see the next generations come in as teachers and students, “I was excited with the number of alumni that come back, a testament that obviously we love being here and pass it down.”
During the years she has been teaching at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, she has been privileged to guide numerous students through their First Reconciliation and First Communion. “Working with second graders, I’m reminded that this is my true calling. To watch them on their faith journey, I just hope and pray that they are always this excited about their faith. They love learning and talking about Jesus.”
This past year she experienced the implementation of the Virtues Program and Faith Families at St. Mary Elementary. “The sisters have done a wonderful job of putting together what these virtues are and what they mean. I think the kids really enjoy it. Each year will get better and better with the program.” Part of the joy of the virtue program for Mrs. Grogan is witnessing the interaction between the different grade levels. “It’s fun to see the sixth graders connect with the kindergartners and guide them through the virtues that we’re talking about.”
For the 2023-2024 school year, Mrs. Grogan will be returning to her roots. “I student taught under Deb Meeker at Christ the King, she was one of the best.” While student teaching she had such a wonderful experience that she told her husband (also an alumna of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools) that their future children would attend Christ the King Elementary. Teaching Physical Education at St. Mary Elementary and Christ the King Elementary feels like a full circle moment for her. Mrs. Grogan is looking forward to this new challenge.
Members of the EDUCATOR LEVEL are honored for their cumulative gifts since 1987 of $100,000 - $249,999.

ALUMNI LEVEL Julie Lautt
Julie Lautt sees being involved with the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic School System as an important part of life. “I’ve been involved as a student, parent, volunteer, committee member, and board member. I believe in the value of what Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is giving to our children. I still have family members, nieces in the system, and I recognize the value of the entire community that made it possible for me and for my kids [to attend]; I want to ensure that is there for future generations.”
Lautt is the Chief Financial Officer at Avera, currently serving as the interim President and CEO of Avera Health. She believes that what she learned during her time at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools continues to give her spiritual formation through service to others. “The value of service that I learned at O’Gorman has really continued on in my career working with Avera. We are all about mission and what service we can provide for the community.”
That commitment to service is a big part of why she jumped in and supported the schools when her own children were attending. Lautt remembers her parents sacrificing of their time and talent to help the schools while she was young. In Lautt’s opinion, it is important to remember those who came before, what they gave and sacrificed, and then continue to carry that legacy forward. She and her siblings chose to honor her parents’ sacrifices and service to the school by continuing to do the same so that future generations can experience Catholic education. “It was important to me to give whatever I could, in whatever way, in order to do my part to make that happen, recognizing that it takes a whole community coming together.”
The friendships and the community that she found as a student have stayed with her throughout her life. Thinking back on memories of her time in school, Lautt said, “It really felt as though you were enveloped in this much bigger community, that was really a very strong support system and a lot of those friendships carry on through the rest of your life.”
The community that can be found at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is unlike anywhere else. Everyone, including teachers, parents, and students, work together to cultivate their faith and become the best version of themselves. Lautt believes the community would not be as strong as it is without each individual doing their part to help. “It takes a village to raise and guide your children. Sometimes you have the ability to give financially. Sometimes you have the ability to give of your time. Sometimes you have the ability to give your time in prayer. Whatever that looks like for wherever someone is at in their life, it takes all of that coming together to make it happen.”

PATRON LEVEL Dan and Katie Fritz
Dan and Katie Fritz moved to Sioux Falls from the Twin Cities in 1995. Katie was hesitant moving to a smaller community but looking back says, “it was one of the most fabulous, wonderful decision we ever made.”
Catholic education has always been a priority for Dan and Katie, having attended Catholic schools themselves. All four of their children attended St. Mary Elementary and graduated from O’Gorman High School: Madeline ’10, Molly ’12, Danny ’15, and Tommy ’17.
Dan recalls Katie being a stay-at-home mom when they made the decision to send their children to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, “Like all young families it is a sacrifice, but I can say it is the best money we ever spent. I’d like to think we are good parents and had something to do with the quality of our kids, but Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools gets a lot of credit for that as well.” They spoke about how the education is phenomenal, but it’s the community and faith that have really made an impact on their family. “Faith bleeds into all of it. It’s why there’s a good education, it’s why there’s a great community, and it’s why we have great teachers. It starts with faith and it ends with faith,” says Dan.
When their children were younger, Dan and Katie gave of their time and talents. Dan served on the school board and as legal counsel for more than ten years. Dan currently serves as the president of South Dakota Partners in Education, a scholarship granting organization in the state of South Dakota, which provides over a half million dollars in scholarships to qualifying families enrolled at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. This enables the schools’ own tuition assistance dollars to reach more families.
Katie worked for Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for over ten years as the Marketing Specialist and then the Director of Development and Marketing. One of her accomplishments was spearheading online admissions with the opportunity for families to financially contribute to teacher and staff salaries during the process.
She then worked for the Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota where Katie helped secure funding for the Teacher of Excellence program and implementing the annual event. Teacher and staff salaries have been near and dear to Dan and Katie’s hearts; they would love to see our BOGCS salaries match if not exceed what the publicschool teachers earn. This is why they continue to support Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools long after their children have graduated.
“We are all called to be promoters of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Talking about it in the community really does have a ripple effect and it’s a way we can all give back,” Katie stated. Dan and Katie encourage families to get involved in our Catholic school community. “If you can’t give financially right now, you can give of your time and talents. We have so many talented parents,” Dan emphasizes. “For the rest of our lives we will be in gratitude to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools for what they did for our family.”

STUDENT LEVEL Matthew Schulte
Matthew Schulte is the youngest of ten children. He followed in his siblings’ footsteps attending Christ the King Elementary, then on to O’Gorman Junior High. He is now a senior at O’Gorman High School and will be graduating in the spring of 2024. “Since all nine of my siblings went through the same schools as me, there were countless people coming up to me and saying how my sister was so nice or how my brother was so smart.”
At O’Gorman High School, it was easy for Matthew to be seen as an individual because of his numerous extracurricular activities. He has been involved in activities such as theater, technical crew, marching band, band, choir, ultimate frisbee, and Campus Ministry. “There were so many different clubs and activities that my family and I could experience something new. The technical crew for theater and the ultimate frisbee club have been great events for me to learn some life lessons. With ultimate frisbee, I learned the great importance of teamwork. Working with the technical crew, I’ve learned the value of hard work and how to use certain power tools.”
The Schulte family has been a staple in the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools community for over three decades. Their support of each other is seen at the events they attend, the Masses they celebrate, and the conversations they have together. Matthew’s faith life at O’Gorman continues to be nurtured in his activities, “O’Gorman has sustained and deepened my Catholic faith. Faith doesn’t have to be separated from the activities. One event I love going to is a monthly event called The Well.” The Well, hosted by the O’Gorman Campus Ministry Department, is held monthly at various locations. The event features praise and worship, adoration, confession, and social time. Matthew shared, “The Well is a great place where I can have fun with friends and deepen my faith.”
Looking to the future, Matthew is inspired to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. “I’m preparing for this with the classes I’m taking. I made sure to take calculus and physics in high school. Taking these classes will help me to more easily understand the math and science classes that I’ll be taking in college. I’m going to take the new Intro to Engineering class because this will be a great introduction to the engineering process.”
With a strong foundation in faith and the support of his peers and the faculty at O’Gorman High School, Matthew has found the confidence and skills needed to usher him into the next chapter of his life.
Members of the STUDENT LEVEL are honored for their cumulative gifts since 1987 of $10,000 - $24,999.

The most rewarding part of going to the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is the community, meeting the people and finding life-long friends. The activities that have helped form me are band, debate and student council.
– Noah Johnson, StudentPerfect A Partnership
Partnering with a local healthcare system has opened up new opportunities for the students on the O’Gorman campus. One real-world benefit of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools’ relationship with Avera is the ability for students to receive an indepth look at careers in the healthcare industry. By inviting our students into their buildings and bringing their staff and guest speakers to O’Gorman, Avera is investing in future careers in the healthcare profession.
Jody Hatzell, seventh grade science teacher at O’Gorman Junior High, scheduled a field trip to Avera Cancer Institute during the 2022-2023 school year. “My goal for this field trip was two-fold. First, I was reaching out to the community to find places where students could get exposure to STEMrelated careers that they may not
have thought of or that they never knew existed. Second, I wanted to reinforce and put a ‘real-world’ application on what we have been studying in class,” Hatzell said.
Students had multiple sessions during the field trip covering a variety of cancer-related topics including: what cancer is, careers in cancer care, genetic counseling, and cancer research. They finished the day with a tour of the Avera Cancer Institute Prairie Center.
“The benefit to having students on site and experiencing hands-on interactions with staff allows students to see career possibilities in the health care field,” said Shantel Krebs, Interim Regional President & CEO of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital. “These
interactions also provide a science and learning component related to their daily school curriculum.”
The opportunity to hear from professionals who are excelling in their field allows students to better envision themselves in that career. Students can learn about and see an adult performing a job that they may not have known existed. “A student may be thinking, ‘I can see myself doing that’ or ‘I would never do that.’ Each reaction is valuable in their own way as we guide the next generation to explore and find their future career,” Hatzell explained.
Lucy Kappel, an eighth grader at O’Gorman Junior High, says she chose to go on this trip because she has always been interested in a career as a medical professional. “This field trip made me realize
that there are many different positions in oncology. It was a really great experience that opened a lot of new career possibilities for me.”
At O’Gorman High School, Beth Odenbach is a science teacher and advisor for the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). This club is geared toward students seeking a career in health care. She said, “Some of [the students] know exactly what they want to do in the future, while others think they want to do something in healthcare but aren’t sure exactly what.”
Odenbach invited a panel of Avera physicians to talk with the HOSA students in order to hear about a variety of careers in the medical profession. Dr. Lucas VanOeveren, Emergency Medicine at Avera, is a frequent guest speaker. During the 2022-2023 school year he was joined by colleagues, Dr. Margaret Carmody of the Neurosurgery Department and Dr. Benjamin Solomon of the Hematology & Oncology Department, to participate in the panel discussion. The students were able to see the collaboration between the different departments.
HOSA has had other Avera employees come speak to their group this year, including Ashley Aarbo, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department, Lisa Jorgenson, a nurse practitioner in Neonatology, and Dr. Editha Liu with Internal Medicine.
Julianna Peters, class of 2023, said, “One of the biggest benefits of having Avera doctors and other speakers come in was that I could expand my knowledge on specific fields that I was interested in…HOSA helped me to finalize my decision on which path I wanted to take into the medical field. It provided me with valuable feedback as I am going into my first year of college.” Julianna plans to focus her studies on physical therapy with an emphasis in pediatrics.
Haley VanOeveren, class of 2023, shared her thoughts on the panel of doctors as well. “It is inspiring to hear about their jobs and to recognize the impact of healthcare in our community! It has allowed me to think about staying in Sioux Falls and working at Avera someday.” As she heads off to college, Haley plans to pursue a career in the medical field. “HOSA prepared me for my future by exposing me to the knowledge and skills I will need to succeed one day as a nurse.”
Exposing students to future careers and opportunities is a benefit of the relationship between Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and Avera. Kyle Groos, President of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools, recognizes this impact, “We are watching students’ interest in the medical field grow, and it is exciting to see these potential future medical professionals form a relationship with a promising employer like Avera.”
