Welcome to the 43rd Annual Dakota Bowl! Greetings to the athletes, coaches, parents, and spectators to the 43rd Annual Bob Burns Dakota Bowl. The Dakota Bowl is a special gridiron tradition in Sioux Falls, and it’s sure to be a great game this year between the Roosevelt Rough Riders and O’Gorman Knights as we return to McEneaney Field. While we enjoy time-honored rivalries in our city, it’s also a great opportunity for us to come together for food, fellowship, and football and to reflect on what a great community we live in. I hope you take time to enjoy all of the festivities planned for this year’s Dakota Bowl, including the marching band performance and fireworks over 41st Street at halftime. Again, have a fantastic time, and enjoy the game! Best regards,

Welcome to the ...
XLIII Bob Burns Dakota Bowl Welcome to the 43rd annual Bob Burns Dakota Bowl! This long standing fall classic continues to be successful because of the many people who work tirelessly each year to put together an evening of football and fun that is the proud tradition of the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl. The Bob Burns Dakota Bowl Committee and the staff and administration of O’Gorman High School would like to thank the many volunteers and the generosity of the Sioux Falls business community for their continued support of this annual event. Over the past forty-three years, the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl has grown into much more than a football game. We are excited to offer an evening of fireworks, skydivers, the Marching Knights and most importantly, a football game! Tonight’s game promises to be an exciting one as the Knights take on their west-side rival Roosevelt Rough Riders. We welcome the Roosevelt team and fans to Dakota Bowl XLIII! Throughout the program, you will find many businesses that support O’Gorman High School and the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Please support them as well! Thank you for coming and enjoy the festivities!

KNIGHTS PREPARE FOR MORE NORMAL SEASON The 2020 football season was never a certainty. From the interruption of winter and spring training to the closure of school facilities to all athletes until mid-summer, coaches and athletes struggled to prepare for a season they were never sure would happen. “This year looks entirely different,” according to Coach Poppinga, “The team has had a great off season, and should be able to fill the losses to graduation and make the team competitive.” This year’s squad has a handful of starters returning on both sides of the ball. But there are other key players with varsity experience. Coach Poppinga says the defense, especially the linebacker group, will need to be the strength of the team while the offense rebuilds. “We always expect to be competitive and win games and our players filling starting roles will be ready to play. Our goal will be to grow as a team throughout the season and make a run come playoffs.” Poppinga is anxious to put the 2020 COVID season behind and looks forward to a much more normal fall. “We were hit hard with COVID last fall affecting numerous starters in key games.” Between players testing positive, players in quarantine, and players attempting comebacks after being sidelined for weeks at a time, the season was anything but smooth. The coaching staff is excited about this year’s team. According to Poppinga, “Summer workouts have gone extremely well. This year’s team will look different from last year’s, but O’Gorman tradition never takes a year off.”
Highlights of the 2021 season include the addition of Jefferson High School to the Metro lineup. Adding a high school has changed the look of the football schedule for all AAA teams in the state. Poppinga says the Metro will once again feature the top teams in the state with all of the teams in the Metro presenting what he believes will be the biggest challenge. Coach Poppinga feels the effort put in during the off season by the entire team will pay dividends early on in the season. Building off last year’s success, he believes the Knights will find a way to contend for another Metro Title and State Championship.

KNIGHTS PLAY FULL SEASON AMIDST GLOBAL PANDEMIC The Knights entered winter conditioning in 2019 upbeat and ready to rebuild from the fall season that had culminated with a ninth state championship. Training, however, came to an abrupt halt in March of 2020 when schools closed and athletic seasons and trainings were put on hold due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Players were not allowed back into the weight room or on the practice fields until mid-summer. From that point on, the goal was to play football in the fall, something no one felt was a certainty. The Knights took the field on August 28 to face Rapid City Stevens in the season opener. Playing in front of a limited crowd of spectators, the roller coaster journey began to accomplish what few high schools in the nation accomplished in 2020 – a full fall schedule of football. The playoffs saw the Knights hosting Harrisburg in what would be a rematch of the final game of the regular season. The Knights held off Harrisburg 27-21 in the season finale, but fell to the Tigers in the playoffs 35-15 bringing the 2020 season to an end. 2020 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
• Andrew Nelson’s 11 special team points against Rapid City Stevens tied an O’Gorman game record. • Teegan Schlimgen’s 6 touchdown passes against Rapid City Central tied an O’Gorman game record. • Peyton Hage’s 84-yard touchdown run against Rapid City Central was the 8th longest touchdown run in O’Goman history. • Sam Stukel’s 4 touchdown receptions against Washington tied an O’Gorman game record. • Teegan Schlimgen broke the career touchdown passes record. He threw 22 touchdown passes in the 2019 season to put his career total at 39, a new O’Gorman record. • Teegan Schlimgen tied the game record for pass attempts (39) and pass completions (28) in a game against Aberdeen. He also set the O’Gorman game record for pass yardage in that game with 459 yards. OG FOOTBALL WINNING TRADITION

Highlights of 43 Years...DAKOTA BOWL GAMES DAKOTA BOWL I O’Gorman 35 Fargo-Shanley 12 For the first ever Dakota Bowl game, Head Coach Bob Burns chose a team from neighboring North Dakota that had won 32 games straight and 15 state football titles. But it was soon clear that this Dakota Bowl idea was going to be special for the Knights. They scored on three of their first four possessions enroute to winning 35-12. Knight fullback Steve Lukens scored three touchdowns. Jamie Kiley carried the ball 13 times, gaining 81 yards and scoring one touchdown. Quarterback Dave Viger completed 7 of 8 passes for 93 yards as a crowd of 7,113 looked on. DAKOTA BOWL II O’Gorman 6 Washington 13 In one of the more controversial Dakota Bowl contests, Washington scored on its first and second possessions and held on to win. The first score came out of what O’Gorman coaches thought was an illegal formation. No flag was thrown, however and the touchdown stood. O’Gorman’s only score came after Dave Flicek knocked down a Warrior punt. John Weisensee picked up the ball and ran it to the Washington 25. Tim Rooney passed to Doug Brown for the touchdown two plays later. DAKOTA BOWL III O’Gorman 10 Lincoln 14 Pat Weisensee did all of the Knights’ scoring, kicking a field goal and running for a touchdown as O’Gorman lost its second straight Dakota Bowl contest. Weisensee ended the night with 142 yards on 24 carries. Two other O’Gorman drives ended without scores inside the Patriots’ 15-yard line. The Knights went on to win the Class 11 AA state championship later that year. DAKOTA BOWL IV O’Gorman 12 Washington 13 (OT) In this overtime game, Washington stopped Knight quarterback Scott Jones short of the goal-line on a two-point conversion to seal the win. A crowd of 7,684 watched the low-scoring contest. Fullback Tim Lorang scored the Knight’s only touchdown in regulation. In the overtime, Jones hit wide receiver Jeff Spriggs for a touchdown to pull within one of Washington, but the Knights failed on the two-point attempt. DAKOTA BOWL V O’Gorman 14 Lincoln 13 Steve Kueter’s first Dakota Bowl as head coach proved to be one of the most memorable as the Knights’ Jeff Meinen stopped the Patriots’ fake extrapoint attempt at the one-yard line for the win. Tim Jurgens led the charge, scoring both of O’Gorman’s touchdowns. But Meinen’s hit on Lincoln’s Jon Peterson at the one-yard line preserved the victory with less than 5 minutes to play in the game. DAKOTA BOWL VI O’Gorman 7 Washington 6 For the third straight year, the Dakota Bowl game was decided by one point as the Knights prevailed over Washington. Tim Jurgens scored on the first play on the fourth quarter, then kicked the extra point to give O’Gorman the advantage. A crowd of 8,021 watched the game which was scoreless at halftime. Jon Harris scored Washington’s touchdown in the third period. DAKOTA BOWL VII O’Gorman 14 Lincoln 0 The Knights’ defense smothered the Patriots enroute to a 14-0 O’Gorman victory. Gene Elrod and Tom Schnetter scored for the Knights. Troy Soldatke and Todd Lamberty led the defense. The Knights went on to win the state Class AA football crown later that year.
DAKOTA BOWL VIII O’Gorman 21 Washington 0 The Knights completed their second straight Dakota Bowl shutout by topping Washington before a crowd of 9,081 at Howard Wood Field. Steve Mislinski, who finished with 124 rushing yards on 26 attempts, scored the first O’Gorman touchdown. Quarterback Jon Olson scored the second and Jim Dougherty added a third touchdown on a 38-yard run. O’Gorman held the Warriors to just 46 yards of offense in the game. The Knights went on to win their second straight Class AA title.
DAKOTA BOWL XVI O’Gorman 20 Brandon Valley 7 The Knights spoiled Brandon Valley’s first appearance in the Dakota Bowl. Kevin Klempka got into the end zone three times as O’Gorman won another Dakota Bowl contest. Klempka ended the game with 91 yards and quarterback Pat Burke added another 44 yards on the ground. Ed Schumann rushed eight times for 60 yards. DAKOTA BOWL XVII O’Gorman 16 Lincoln 8 Alex Butterfield took the opening kickoff and rambled 95 yards to launch the Knights into the lead in the Dakota Bowl. But Lincoln played tough and O’Gorman lost three first-half fumbles to keep the game close. 25
nature game since 1998. John Bull scored three touchdowns for the Warriors. John Lyons scored for O’Gorman on a 1-yard run and later on a 7-yard run, but the Knights couldn’t stop the Warriors. DAKOTA BOWL XXIX O’Gorman 14 Roosevelt 7 A rematch of the 2006 state championship game was delayed nearly an hour as a thunderstorm forced the evacuation of 10,000 fans from the grandstands. When the game finally started, the Knights used a half-back pass thrown from junior Will Powell to senior Matt Greenfield and an 11-yard touchdown run from senior Dillon Lebrun in the first half to hold off the Riders. Continued from page 25 DAKOTA BOWL XXXII O’Gorman 9 Roosevelt 12 The Riders scored with 46 seconds left in the game to give them the win in front of 8,200 fans at Howard Wood Field. The Knights outgained the Riders 261210 and dominated the third quarter after the game was tied 6-6 at halftime. O’Gorman drove deep into Rider territory twice in the third quarter but only ended up with a field goal to go up 9-6 at the end of the quarter. Kelby Tague had 104 rushing yards and Sam Steffl rushed for 102 for the Knights. It was only the third win in 27 tries for the Riders against the Knights. DAKOTA BOWL XXXIII O’Gorman 24 Washington 7 The Knights blocked three kicks on special teams in route to a 24-7 win over the defending state champion Washington Warriors in the 33rd Annual Dakota Bowl at Howard Wood Field. Sam Steffl carried the ball 33 times for 149 yards to lead the Knights who did not complete a pass. While the Warriors scored first, the Knights defense owned the evening holding Washington scoreless after the first drive of the game. With the score tied 7-7, Nic Steffl blocked a punt and Austin Pharis scooped up the ball and ran it in to give the Knights a 14-7 lead. Flynn Donelan scored from nine yards out to make the score 21-7 at the half. The Warriors moved the ball well throughout the second half but were never able to find the end zone. DAKOTA BOWL XXXIV O’Gorman 7 Roosevelt 19 In a defensive battle, Roosevelt clung to a 9-7 lead at half and went on to add the only points in the second half to pull out the victory. After losing quarterback Tanner Schulte in the first quarter to injury, the Knights struggled with a limited offense. The Riders had their own problems offensively, and mistakes set up the scoring opportunities for both squads in the first half. Nic Steffl rushed for 65 yards on 18 carries. Blake Hilmoe hit Austin Pharis with a 16 yard touchdown pass for the only Knights touchdown.
DAKOTA BOWL XXXV O’Gorman 28 Sioux Falls Washington 10 The Knights got back on track with a win over last season’s state champion Washington Warriors. Luke Fritsch led the Knights offense scoring three touchdowns on runs of 52, 47, and 12 yards. Matt White scored first on a Washington fumble taking the ball in from 1-yard out late in the first quarter. Fritsch scored to put the Knights up 14-3, but the Warriors answered to keep the game close with a 14-10 halftime score. The third quarter saw neither team score, but Fritsch broke the drought early in the fourth quarter with his 47 yard run which put the Knights up 21-10. After a Washington turnover, Fritsch added the final touchdown with a little over four minutes left in the game. O’G had 266 total yards of offense and made the Warriors pay for their five fumbles.
DAKOTA BOWL XXXVIII O’Gorman 34 Brandon Valley 22 The Knights marched to a victory in Dakota Bowl XXXVIII largely by combining the talents of Hunter Thompson at quarterback and sophomore Canyon Bauer at wide receiver. Bauer ended the night with 234 receiving yards on nine catches with three touchdowns. His scoring started early when he caught a short pass in the first quarter and went 73 yards for the touchdown. More was to follow as Thompson ended the night with 352 yards through the air and one touchdown run. Bauer scored on a catch followed by a 29-yard run in the third. Andrew Reuter followed with a reception and a 65- yard run to put the Knights ahead for the first time. With just over three minutes left in the game, Bauer caught a 28-yard pass to seal the victory. Kristin Jakowicz was 4-4 on extra point attempts.
DAKOTA BOWL XXXVI O’Gorman 29 Lincoln 34 Lincoln returned the opening kick-off 92 yards for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead in Dakota Bowl XXXVI, but the Knights fought back with a touchdown run by Dodi Makwinja. Early in the second quarter, Colin Zimprich added a field goal to give the Knights a 9-7 lead. The Patriots managed to add another score late in the first half to take a 14-9 lead into halftime. Both teams came to life in the second half with the Knights scoring three times in the fourth quarter. Fritsch went 8 of 13 for 163 yards and three touchdowns hitting Jack Peery twice and Ben Johnson once to cut the lead to 34-29 with 1:29 to play in the game. Lincoln recovered the onside kick and hung on to take the win.
DAKOTA BOWL XXXIX O’Gorman 35 Harrisburg 26 Harrisburg’s inaugural performance in Dakota Bowl XXXIX saw a talented Tiger squad giving the Knights all they could handle for four quarters. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and led 14-7 at the half. Sporting their new grey uniforms, the Knights staged a comeback in the third quarter with Isaac Struck finding Canyon Bauer for an 81-yard touchdown pass 48 seconds into the second half. Bauer finished with three catches for 175 yards. Harrisburg refused to go away as they quickly retook the lead on the next possession. The back and forth scoring continued when Struck threw to Nick Billion for a 47-yard touchdown regaining the lead 2120. The Tigers scored with a little over nine minutes to play coming within two points of the Knights (28-26), but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
DAKOTA BOWL XXXVII O’Gorman 14 Roosevelt 24 Roosevelt got on the board first in Dakota Bowl XXXVII, but the Knights fought back with a 65-yard drive capped off with Luke Fritsch taking the ball in for the score. Roosevelt went on to lead 21-7 at the half and hung on to win 24-14. Fritsch found Jack Peery late in the fourth quarter, but two interceptions and two fumbles were too much for the Knights to overcome in this Dakota Bowl loss. Peery led the Knights with 104 yards, five catches and a score. Makwinja had 17 carries for 65 yards.
DAKOTA BOWL XL O’Gorman 42 Washington 33 Dakota Bowl saw No. 2 O’Gorman taking on No. 3 Washington in a rematch of last year’s semi-final game. The Knights scored on their first play from scrimmage with Zach Norton finding Canyon Bauer with a 73-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors turned the ball over on the kickoff allowing the Knights to
27
score their second touchdown less than a minute into the game. After stopping Washington on the next drive, OG took the ball 69-yards with Bauer scoring. Norton found Evan Wittry just before half to push the lead to 28-7 at the half. The Warriors mounted a comeback in the second half scoring on an interception to pull within two points. The two-pointconversion attempt failed, and the Knights drove the field for a final score making it 42-33 with under five minutes to play. Norton completed 18 of 27 passes for 294-yards with three touchdowns. Bauer led the Knights scoring with 9 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Kowalczyk led the defensive effort with 10 tackles and assists. DAKOTA BOWL XLI The second game of the season saw the Knights taking on the returning 11AAA state champion Brandon Valley Lynx. The Knights opened the game on a scoring drive capped off by Tate Wishard’s touchdown run. Tied 7-7 midway through the second quarter, the Lynx capitalized on a Knights’ fumble and went 99 yards to take the lead 13-7. An interception on the next Knights’ possession led to another Brandon Valley touchdown to put the Lynx up 19-7 with a minute left in the half. Connor Pavelko’s 49-yard field goal at the end of the first half led to a 19-10 score at the break. The Lynx scored on the opening drive of the third quarter to go up 26-10 followed by an 81-yard punt return to lead 33-10 late in the third quarter. Both teams traded touchdowns in the fourth to lead to the 40-16 final. DAKOTA BOWL XLVII O’Gorman 0 Roosevelt 48 With restricted attendance due to the pandemic the Dakota Bowl moved to McEneaney Field for the first time in history. The No. 4 ranked Knights were outsized and overrun by the No. 1 Riders in this lopsided battle. O’Gorman was held to 121 yards of offense and failed to score. Anders Mattecheck led the defense with six tackles on the night. Roosevelt remained top-ranked throughout the season before falling to Harrisburg in the semi-final game of the playoffs.

O GORMAN ATHLETIC PROGRAM WINS 2021 KELO CUP AWARD! The KELO Cup award honors athletic excellence in South Dakota. Each school year, KELOLAND Sports awards the KELO Cup to three South Dakota high schools – one in each class AA, A and B. Schools earn points with each first, second and third place finish in the state championship for each sport. The school with the most total points in its class wins the KELO Cup. While competing in a class with schools more than twice its size, O’Gorman High School once again brought home the KELO Cup award. Five state championships contributed to this award including championships in boys soccer, girls cross-country, volleyball, girls track, and girls golf.

In addition to the five state championships the Knights were runner-up state champions in boys basketball and competitive cheer while finishing third in the state in boys golf, girls basketball, and girls tennis. All of these contributed points toward the KELO cup award. Accomplishing so much during an incredibly tough year due to the pandemic speaks volumes about the O’Gorman athletic program. Working with a much smaller enrollment, the Knights were hit harder than most AA schools when athletes were forced to sit out due to quarantine or isolation caused by COVID-19. This led to some early season losses for some of the teams who later emerged triumphant. Aaron Strand coached two of the championship teams, the girls cross country team and the girls track team. The cross country team won the 2020 State Championship in a blizzard out in Rapid City. In the spring, they joined a group of talented sprinters, throwers, and jumpers to bring home the Knights first ever Track and Field State Championship. According to Coach Strand, “All the coaches feel blessed to have gotten the opportunity to coach a very talented group of young ladies.”

2021 O’GORMAN/CATHEDRAL HALL OF FAME Inductees Sam Kean
Mary Sue Donohue
Sam Kean, a 1997 alum, took every science class he could at O’Gorman and graduated covaledictorian. He was an avid long-distance runner, earning nine letters in cross-country and track, and running on the Knights’ state championship cross-country team in 1994. He loved theater as well, and acted and sang (and God help him, tap-danced) in several plays and musicals. He later graduated from the University of Minnesota with honors and received degrees in both physics and English literature. Sam is a nationally bestselling writer and specializes in creative nonfiction. He strives to show how science affects our lives in hidden ways beyond the lab and he always emphasizes the human side of science through humor and heartache, the heroes and villains, the conflict and drama and wonder. Sam is a New York Times bestselling author, has won international awards for literary science writing and his several of his books have been translated into twenty-four languages. One of his book even appeared in an iPhone commercial. Beyond his books, Kean has edited The Best American Nature and Science Writing Anthology, and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and the New York Times Magazine. He has also been featured on NPR’s “Radiolab,” “Science Friday,” “All Things Considered” and “Fresh Air.” His podcast, called the Disappearing Spoon, debuted at #1 on the iTunes science charts, and he has given talks at colleges, universities, and festivals around the world. Recently, he won the 2021 national GradyStack award from the American Chemical Society for outstanding scientific communication.
Mary Sue Donohue, class of 1968, has demonstrated generosity of her time and talents to multiple organizations through her expertise in estate planning. She was among the first group of women to receive her law degree from the University of South Dakota, becoming a third-generation lawyer in her family. Mary Sue worked various avenues within her degree before she found her passion in wills, trusts, and estates, in which she is board-certified. Her accomplishments include being a member of The South Dakota Bar; The Florida Bar; The American Bar Association; a member of and past president of The Greater Boca Raton Estate Planning Council; a member of The Real Property, Probate and Trust Law and the Law Practice Management Sections of the Florida Bar; and chair of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association Probate for five years, Trust & Guardianship Committee. Her volunteer work includes entities such as the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, Florida Atlantic University Nursing School Advisory Board, Florence Fuller Child Development Center, JARC, St. John Paul II Academy, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Boca Raton Regional Hospital PAC, Florida Philharmonic, YMCA and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Mary Sue has received countless awards and recognition for the work she has done to aid organizations with estate planning and ensuring the non-profit sector continues in the future.
Paul & Nancy Scharenbroich O’Gorman High School sweethearts and Class of 1977 alumni, Paul and Nancy grew up in the Catholic school system before moving to Brandon to raise their family. In 1998 their son, Eric Paul Scharenbroich and girlfriend, Angee Kaye Rozeboom, were killed instantly in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Juniors at Brandon Valley High School, the devastating loss of two students took an immeasurable toll on family and friends. In response to the tragedy, Nancy developed her 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization From the H.E.A.R.T. (Help Eliminate Alcohol Related Tragedies). Her mission of Get a Ride Don’t Drink and Dive has been shared through countless media platforms because of her relationships with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the South Dakota Department of Transportation, web site developers, and the enthusiastic volunteers who support the organization. Nancy was honored and recognized with a National Public Service Award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on April 26, 2021. Nancy’s passion project has impacted countless lives and has been recognized with lowering deaths and injuries in the State of South Dakota Nancy and Paul would like to remind everyone to Save a Life, Don’t Drink and Drive.
We are proud to support the Dakota Bowl athletes, coaches and their families who go the extra mile in pursuit of big dreams.

O GORMAN SAYS GOODBYE TO LEGENDARY TEACHER AND COACH The O’Gorman community said goodbye to Rod Garrison, a legendary teacher and coach, who passed away on July 22, 2021. Rod “Grizz” Garrison taught and coached at O’Gorman for over 30 years. He was an integral part of the Bob Burns Dakota Bowl for 22 years serving as the line coach for the Knights football team. During that time Garrison was a part of seven state football championships. He also served as head track coach from 1978-1983, assistant boys golf coach from 2000-2002, assistant girls golf coach in 1984, head boys golf coach from 2002-2014 and head girls golf coach from 1985 – 2015. Under Garrison’s leadership, the girls golf teams won twelve state championships and posted nine runner-ups finishes. The boys golf team claimed five state championships and were runners-up twice. As a head and assistant coach, Garrison was involved in 25 state championship teams during his tenure at O’Gorman. He won numerous coaching honors including the National Coaches Association’s 2000 Golf Coach of the Year, and 2010 Girls Coach of the Year. He was the National High
School Athletic Coaches Association 2005 Golf Coach of the Year. In 2007, Garrison was inducted into the SD High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he received the Distinguished Service Award by the SD High School Activities Association. In 2014 he was inducted into the SD Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Most recently he was inducted into the SD Golf Hall of Fame; however, he passed away before the induction ceremony. After leaving O’Gorman, Garrison worked as Director of Corporate Partners for Great Life Golf and Fitness. During his time at Great Life, he established the Sioux Empire Junior Challenge Golf Program. He ran this program for 14 years awarding thousands of dollars to graduating seniors through this charitable organization. In addition to his decorated coaching career, Garrison is remembered by thousands of former O’Gorman students as someone who cared about them beyond the classroom or playing field and who taught them lifelong lessons. He served as the attendance coordinator for years, and many students can tell stories of their attempts to arrive late or leave early only to be foiled by “Grizz”. Rod Garrison was a part of the O’Gorman faculty for over three decades, and he will be missed dearly by the O’Gorman community.
