With vocations to the priesthood a growing challenge in the Church, we celebrate whenever one of our alumni of O’Gorman is ordained. This summer was especially exciting, then, when not one, but THREE of our graduates were ordained as priests in our diocese! We invited the three back to O’Gorman this summer to talk about high school, seminary and beyond. On June 2nd, Bishop Paul Swain ordained Andy Thuringer, Tyler Mattson and Joe Scholten, all members of the O’Gorman Class of 2009! “The diocese has been praying for vocations for years,” says Fr. Andy. “You asked for this. God answered, and now we’re here. God is still calling people. He can call three people in one class or 10 people.”

Fr. Joe says he first felt the call while still in high school. “It was clear by my senior year that this was the direction God was calling me to.” He and Fr. Andy were in theatre, oral interp and choir together. He recalls many ‘spirited’ discussions with friends in those days about theology and religion. He was voted by his classmates as the one ‘most likely to become a priest’. Fr. Andy and Fr. Joe were great friends in high school. They would stay in the classrooms and rehearse interp pieces or lines from the plays they were in until the janitors would kick them out late in the evening. Fr. Andy hadn’t considered a vocation in high school. “I never really thought about it until Joe was entering the seminary. I visited him there and we had lots of calls back and forth. It became clear over time that I was also being called.” The close friends found strength in their shared calling. “To have almost an older brother go through it,” says Fr. Andy, “was a grace for me.” Similar to Fr. Joe, Fr. Tyler said he felt a call while still in high school. “Around my junior year, a lot of friends would be talking about what they wanted to do after high school and I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I would hear a quiet voice say, ‘Be a priest.’” He admits now that he ignored the voice for a while. But the voice didn’t go away. He eventually entered the seminary and says his parents noticed changes in him. “They were happy to see how I’ve grown in happiness.”

“I’m blessed to not only be here but within this place. I hope that in 10 years I radiate Jesus even more than I do now.” Fr. Tyler, a self-described ‘band geek’ in high school, didn’t hang much with Fr. Andy and Fr. Joe in high school, but they became good friends in seminary. “I knew Joe fairly well, but didn’t know Andy until seminary when we actually roomed together.” He describes being at O’Gorman as a place with a deep spirit and culture of prayer. “Having a priest/chaplain on campus contributed to that,” says Fr. Tyler. Fr. Joe agrees. “Christ lives here in a real way. I don’t think it’s an accident that we are all from the same class. It’s been an amazing journey from these halls to seminary and back home again,” says Fr. Scholten. Fr. Tyler and Fr. Joe are both associates at Sioux Falls parishes, so hope to be around the Catholic schools in Sioux Falls often. In fact, Fr. Joe is now the chaplain at O’Gorman Jr. High, an assignment he is excited about, with an opportunity to share his own love for Jesus with young people and perhaps even help others considering a possible vocation. “I’m blessed to not only be here but within this place. I hope that in 10 years I radiate Jesus even more than I do now.” The three feel blessed that they have been able to be ordained and begin their lives as priests together. “It’s been beautiful to see how the Lord has brought us back together again,” says Fr. Joe. “It’s so cool to have close relationships with these guys,” says Fr. Andy. Fr. Joe, Fr. Tyler and Fr. Andy – thank you for saying YES to the call to the priesthood! You are the future of the church in our diocese and we think that’s a really great thing.

We welcomed 7 inductees into our O’Gorman-Cathedral Hall of Fame this year. Full bios are included on their plaques, which now hang in the Hall of Fame hallway at O’Gorman (outside the Performing Arts Center balcony).

STEVE MOLOHON ’92 – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Steve was a force to be reckoned with for O’Gorman in the early 1990s. The offensive guard helped pave the way for the Knights’ punishing ground attack, often pulling and identifying defenders around the edge and downfield, then making key blocks leading to big plays in the running game. Defensively, Molohon lined up as middle linebacker on one of the most dominant O’G defenses ever, a unit that allowed a mere 6 points per game and shut out four consecutive playoff opponents on the way to the 1991 state championship. His ability to read and react, coupled with pursuit and tackling, and an innate knack for making big plays led to 196 career tackles, 2 sacks, 5 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries and 5 touchdowns on returns. Molohon’s leadership was pivotal in producing an 11-1 record in 1991 that culminated with a memorable playoff run where the Knights outscored opponents 125-0. Molohon was named Captain of the Argus Leader Elite 45 team—recognizing him as the best player in the State of South Dakota. He went on to play collegiate football at Southwest Minnesota State University where he earned All-NSIC honors three times, was a preseason All-American and was named SMSU Male Athlete of the Year for 1995-1996. After college Molohon played two seasons in Austria for the Styrian Longhorns. In 1999, he was named Defensive Player of the Year for the Austrian International Football League. PAT MORAN ’89 – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Pat Moran earned eight letters while at O’G, two for basketball and six for tennis, which was his primary sport. He participated in the Northwest Junior Section competing against players from the Dakotas and Minnesota, winning numerous titles in both singles and doubles. He achieved a personal best #5 ranking in singles and #2 ranking in doubles with brother Chris (’91) in the 16’s division. He also won the SD Adult Closed tournament as a 16 year old, beating the reigning men’s champion Darryl Paluch in a 3-set final. A varsity player for O’G beginning in 7th grade, Moran teamed with his brother Mike (’86) for many team victories, at one point achieving 50 straight team wins. As an 8th grader, Moran won the 3rd flight singles championship. His freshman year, he took 2nd place at Flight 2 singles, while the team achieved a 2nd place overall finish. As a sophomore, Moran achieved perhaps his most memorable achievement, taking down 3-time state champion Ripper Hatch (Brookings) for the Flight 1 championship. Junior year, Moran took a tough loss in the Flight 1 finals, but the team won the state championship. As a senior, Moran won his 2nd Flight 1 championship, and then teamed with his brother Chris to take the Flight 1 doubles, the first brother duo championship in the modern era. For his career, Moran won four individual and two team state titles. The combined Moran brothers helped O’G take the SIC championship every year from 19861990. Moran was named the SD Tennis Player of the Year in ‘87 and ‘89, finishing his career with a 117-9 record. He was named a Prince HS Tennis All American in ‘87 and ‘89. He also led a team of 10 players named to the Prince HS Tennis Academic All American teams in those same years. Moran was named a Prince HS Tennis All American Honorable Mention in 1988.

CARMEN MORRISON ’00 – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS Carmen began playing on the O’Gorman varsity basketball and golf teams in 8th grade and earned 10 varsity letters between the two sports. She helped the Knights golf team capture 14 total city, regional and conference titles as well as one state championship and three state runner-up finishes. Individually, Carmen won two city, two regional, and three conference championships. She was a five year All-State and All-Conference selection. In basketball, Carmen came off the bench as an 8th grader to help the Knights win their first ever state championship. For her efforts, she received the Coca Cola Unsung Hero Award, the first of three during her basketball career. She was a four year starter, two-time All-Conference selection, and earned Academic All-State honors from the SD Basketball Coaches Association. Her senior year, Carmen was named outstanding athlete by the National Girls and Women in Sports Foundation and received the Margaret Lynch Award for best exemplifying the ideals of the O’Gorman athletic department. She was named FCA Honor Athlete and was also awarded a four year scholarship from the Women’s Western Golf Foundation. ANN ELKJER DOYLE ’70 – EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE Ann was always interested in public service and social justice. After graduating from USD with a BS in Sociology/Social Work, Ann worked for local and state governments to improve programs for the elderly, juvenile justice and the state-wide court system. She then worked for Ramsey County Community Human Services Department in St Paul to develop and administer programs for children who were victims of abuse or in need of treatment for their emotional or behavioral health issues. When she returned to the agency after taking time to be a stay at home mom, she worked on a domestic violence initiative and coordinating early childhood programs. Ann and her husband, Michael, were founding members of the Board of Directors for Homes on Portland Enterprises (HOPE), which was a housing component of the domestic violence shelter, St. Joseph’s House. HOPE used donations and volunteers to purchase, renovate and manage housing so the woman leaving the shelter had safe, quality and affordable housing in one of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in Minneapolis. The HOPE Community now has 263 units and is a national model for resident-driven, neighborhood transformation and affordable housing. After moving with her family to the Tampa Bay area, Ann continued her public service in child welfare and community development, working for the FL Department of Children and Families, the St. Petersburg Free Clinic and for Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Florida, where she has worked in child welfare, child abuse prevention and community development for 17 years. She is currently a Regional Administrator with Devereux, overseeing programs and staff working with families, youth and communities in 10 counties in west central Florida. Ann is also the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Metro Tampa affiliate of Love INC (In the Name of Christ), a nonprofit organization that she and her husband Michael started in 2013 to mobilize local Christian Churches to better serve their struggling neighbors by demonstrating the love of Christ. She is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa, where she is a Eucharistic Minister and member of its Foster Care Ministry. EGAN FAMILY – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS

Seven of eight children of the Tom and Mary Ann Egan family, Mike ‘74, Debbie ‘75, Susan ‘76, John ‘77, Mary T. ‘78, Sarah ‘81 and Jane ‘87, participated on the O’Gorman golf teams between the years of 1971-1987 and found great success, including winning five state titles. Four of the siblings went on to play collegiate golf. Mary T. and Sarah were inducted into the Dakota State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. Jane was inducted into the New Mexico State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and was also inducted into the O’Gorman Athletic Hall of Fame. Five of the siblings went on to work in the profession in various aspects of golf, including working as golf professionals, a golf superintendent, and the golf coach of the O’Gorman Girls Freshman/Junior Varsity team for 15 years. Some have also volunteered for several professional and charitable golf events. For many years, the Egan family participated in the Mike Egan Memorial Golf Tournament in Pierre, SD for their brother, who passed away suddenly in 2002. The Egan family continues to get together and enjoy the game of golf.

DAVE WINKER ’72 – EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS Dave earned his Bachelor of Physics Degree at the University of Minnesota. He then attended the University of Arizona, Tucson, receiving a PhD in Optical Physics based on research conducted under a joint arrangement between the Optical Sciences Center and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. After graduation, he was employed as a civilian research scientist for the US Air Force at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Activities there concerned the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of laser beams in the atmosphere. As a part of this work, he collected observations of binary stars using the 107” telescope at McDonald Observatory in Texas. In 1989 he moved to NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA where he has been involved in many aspects of studying the atmosphere using lidar, a technique similar to radar but using lasers. After initial involvement in studies of volcanic aerosols using ground-based and airborne lidar systems, he became involved in the development of the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment (LITE), which acquired the first ever lidar observations from space. In fall 1994 he led science planning during LITE on-orbit operations on the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-64 mission. For this activity he received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Achievement. In 1998 he successfully proposed the CALIPSO satellite mission to NASA and the French space agency CNES. Since then he has been the lead scientist for the joint US-French CALIPSO mission, with responsibility for overall mission success and production and dissemination of data products. This $250 million mission was the first autonomous lidar instrument in orbit and is responsible for significantly advancing our understanding of clouds and atmospheric composition. As CALIPSO Principal Investigator he heads the joint US-French CALIPSO science team and works with users of CALIPSO data products including climate modeling centers and weather forecast agencies in the US, Europe, and Japan. Dave is author or co-author of over 100 scientific publications, is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union, and serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research. He is a member of several international science teams, has sat on numerous review boards of both NASA and European satellites, and acts as liaison on satellite lidar activities between NASA and various national space agencies. He has been a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, Germany and was a contributor to the 5th climate assessment report of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2013. PATRICK M. GUSTAF ’70 – EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE Over the years, Pat has lived a life of service to his family, his church and his community. Pat has volunteered on both the Dakota Bowl and Extravaganza committees. Since opening his first flower shop in 1973, Pat has worked to make our community more beautiful through his designs. He taught Floral Studies at Southeast Technical Institute from 1992-2015, developing a Certification program exclusive to STI. He produced and hosted a weekly television program for KSFY-TV from 1996-2009 called “In Bloom”. Pat is a founding member of the South Dakota Florists Association, holding all leadership positions over the years. Pat was inducted into the South Dakota Florists Hall of Fame. He learned early on in his career that the florist industry was one of low profit margins, resulting in the decision that his societal contribution in service of others would be Time and Talent in lieu of Treasure. He’s donated countless floral certificates to local fundraisers and nonprofit groups. At his parish, Pat has served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, sacristan, religious education teacher, youth group committee member and parish finance council member. Pat’s face is very familiar to the community as a leader member of the Sioux Falls Downtown Lions Club. He was Pancake Days Chair in 1984 and 1991, served as president of the club and was awarded the 100% President Certificate. Pat was the 1997 Multiple District Convention Chairman and received the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation. He was the 1997 South Dakota Lion of the Year. He was the Pancake Day Grill Chairman from 2000-2012. He’s also served as the Campaign Sight First II Co-Chair. He was the 2010-2016 SD State Lions Pin Chair. As a parent of two Special Olympians, Pat has been very involved over the years with the Sioux Falls and South Dakota Special Olympics programs. He was focused on seeing his daughters and many other people with special needs have the highest quality of life possible. He has served as a bowling and track & field coach and has traveled the country supporting Special Olympics athletes. An Irishman through and through, Pat has brought his family to every Sioux Falls St. Patrick’s Day Parade since the first one some 37 years ago. In 2014 he was chosen to be the parade’s Grand Marshall, a fitting honor for a man who has given so much to his community.

NATIONAL HONORS FOR O’G SENIOR O’Gorman senior Nathaniel Pekas was selected to participate in the prestigious US Army All-American Marching Band. The band plays during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, a game that features the nation’s top high school senior football players and marching musicians. He will march during half-time of the game in San Antonio, TX. This summer, Nathaniel was also chosen as one of two boys selected to represent South Dakota at Boys Nation in Washington D.C. Those chosen act as senators for their state in a model federal government.

MISS MAC STARTS 50TH YEAR! Longtime St. Mary teacher Jan McEntee began her 50th year of teaching this past August. Sadly, she also announced this will be her final year of teaching. Miss Mac says she is proud to have taught the children and now grandchildren of some of her earliest students. Miss Mac’s last day at St. Mary will be the last day of school, May 18, 2018. SFCS REPRESENTED AT LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES O’Gorman Junior High 8th Grader Leo Hueners and Holy Spirit 5th grader Sully Schlimgen both competed in the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania this summer. A picture of Leo and a competitor from the Dominican Republic went viral on the internet, after the photographer captured them communicating with each other through a translation app on their phones. Leo says the boy named Benny wanted to know his name, and who was playing that night, but the boy was speaking Spanish. Instead of walking away, he decided to find another way to communicate and made a new friend in the process. O’G GRADS DOING WELL IN BIG LEAGUES Dusty Coleman ’06 was called up to start for the MLB team the San Diego Padres this summer. He served as a relief infielder for the team. Dusty hit four home runs in the 27 games in which he was called up.

Cedric Lang ’11 was signed by the Minnesota Vikings to their practice squad. Lang had been a basketball player at UTEP before taking a 5th year of academic eligibility to give football a try. He was in camp with the Denver Broncos during the offseason this year, but was officially signed onto the Vikings’ practice squad as an offensive lineman in September. GIRLS & BOYS GOLF STATE CHAMPS

The O’G Girls won the State Championship in June. The Lady Knights won by 41 strokes over Aberdeen Central, setting State records. Emily Olson won the individual title. Three made the All-Tournament team: Emily, Carly Kunkel and Sophie Jansa. Two others made All-State: Jenna Sutcliffe and Sophia Salter.

The O’G Boys won the State Championship in October. The Knights won by ONE SHOT over Rapid City Stevens, and also set State records. Bryce Hammer was named to the All-Tournament team. Four made All-State: Blake Dornbusch, Sam Sutcliffe, Justin Kolb and Michael Statz. The Knights are coached by Tom Jansa ’80.

GIRLS SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPS The O’Gorman Girls’ Softball Team won the State Softball Championship for the first time ever! The Knights battled some great teams, lost in the semis, but battled back, finally forcing a second game for the Championship against Brandon Valley. The Knights simply refused to give up, finally ending the Championship game at 1am Sunday morning with a walk-off double!

alumni ’45 Sr. Loretta McIlvenna recently celebrated her 70th Jubilee. Sister Loretta McIlvenna, OP, has ministered in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma. Her religious name was Sr. Marie Simeon. Sr. Loretta’s ministry has been dedicated to teaching. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Cajetan, Chicago, 1956–1959; St. Thomas More, 1965–1971; and Visitation, 1976–1984, where she also served as principal. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Sr. Loretta taught at St. Robert, Shorewood, 1971–1976. In the Diocese of Madison, she has ministered as a volunteer with parish faith formation at St. Patrick, Benton, since 2007, where she also promotes awareness of Venerable Samuel Mazzuchelli, OP (1806–1864), through tours of the church he built and his home. Her home parish is St. Therese of Lisieux, Sioux Falls, in the Sioux Falls Diocese. She is the daughter of the late John and Theresa (Maher) McIlvenna.

’63 William F. Roche has an AA in ’96 Applied Meteorology. He was in the US Air Force for 23 years and retired as a MSgt. He then worked for the U.S. Post Office for 20 years. ’61 Nancy J. Scott worked as a VA pharmacy tech but retired in 2013. She is a volunteer at the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls, taking lots of pictures. She writes, “They offer wonderful classes for all—lots of children, all ages!”

Thomas Graves has been appointed a Judicial Magistrate for Polk County, Iowa, the Fifth Judicial District of Iowa. The appointment for a six-year term was made May 16, 2017.

Trent Thoms, Commercial Real Estate Broker, CBRE, was recently named to the “Pacific Business News 2017 Forty Under 40” honoring 40 of Hawaii’s best and brightest young businesswomen and businessmen. Trent received his MBA from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He is a commercial real estate broker with CBRE in Honolulu, Hawaii, an international real estate company. ’96 Joe Rutten writes, “I am excited to announce that I have accepted a position as the Director of the Benedictine Leadership Institute, and am now a faculty member at Mount Marty College. I look forward to inspiring young people to become great souls! ’99 Suzanne Loen Berg earned her MA in Speech Communication from Minnesota State/Mankato, and her PhD in Media & Communication from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She is an assistant professor of Communications at Newman University in Kansas. She is married to William Berg, Jr, and they have two children, William, 4 and Lorelei, 1. ’01 Diane Tarbox Jansen has her AAS (applied science in veterinary technology) degree from Ridgewater College. She is manager of Dog Days Hotel and Day Camp. She is married to Steve Jansen. ’01 The Most Reverend Robert D. Gruss, Bishop of Rapid City, and the Most Reverend Paul J. Swain, Bishop of Sioux Falls recently announced the appointment of Christopher Motz as the first executive director for the South Dakota Catholic Conference. This newly created Conference will serve as the official voice of the bishops of South Dakota on issues of public policy, providing explanations of Church teaching and their practical application. Christopher graduated from Iowa State University and the University of St. Thomas School of Law. He served in the United States Marine Corps, including active duty in Iraq. He is currently a Staff Judge Advocate in the Minnesota Air National Guard. A state Catholic conference, which most states have established, monitors, responds to and educates Catholics about proposed public policies of all levels of government, especially those that impact the life and the dignity of all persons and the rights of Catholics to practice their faith both personally and in the public square. Motz will follow the development and implementation of public policies and communicate with public officials in all branches and at all levels of governments not only during a legislative session but throughout the year. He also will serve as a resource for clergy as well as diocesan and parish staffs. Christopher and his wife Hannah have three children and are relocating to South Dakota.

’15 Taryn Kloth was chosen by USA Volleyball as one of 36 players who trained and competed as part of the U.S. Collegiate National TeamMinneapolis (CNT-Minneapolis) program. The CNT-Minneapolis squad, which is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline, is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team. The training took place in June at the University of Minnesota. Afterward, the athletes were assigned to one of three 12-member teams and competed in a round-robin format at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The matches were held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships under the same roof.

She is survived by her children: Chip, Joe, Matt and Mary Clare; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Grace’s mom, Mildred Seubert Vandel (deceased), was a ‘35 Cathedral graduate. Dorcas Pillar, mother of: Randall Pillar ‘68, Thomas Pillar ‘70, Julie Curry ‘73, Mary Wesnoski ‘75, Theresa Standish ‘79, and Joe S. Pillar ‘83. She taught school at St. Lambert’s for 10 years, and worked for many years as a secretary for the O’Gorman guidance counselors.

Class of 1965 turns 70 Celebration!

For the 3rd time in five years, the Class of 1965 gathered to party together. This time the celebration was because they’re all turning 70 years old. They gathered in September and had about 70 in attendance. No group photo was taken, unfortunately, but we’re told they all look exactly like they did in high school. A couple of highlights included Bishop Paul Swain stopping by to offer his congratulations and Kate Sehrer Hoesing offering the Happy Birthday toast as class president. Classmates want to thank Mike Gillespie for all of his work pulling the party together.

The Class of 1967 had a fantastic time celebrating at their gathering in September. In fact, they had so much fun that they got kicked out of the Convention Center because it got so late. The OGHS Class of 1997 had a great turn out for our 20 year reunion on September 16th! We started the day with a tour of the high school led by Alumni Director Carol Nesbitt, and a Mass in the Chapel officiated by Father Terry Weber. The event continued into the evening and night at McNally’s Irish Pub with many memories & laughs shared by all! Thank you to all who attended. Sounds like a 25 year is already in the works!
