Hello to all Cathedral and O’Gorman alumni and Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools families! My name is Malorie Adamson and I am the new Alumni and Communications Specialist at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. I have taken Carol Nesbitt’s place as she has moved off to beautiful Colorado with her husband to pursue other endeavors. I am thrilled to be in this position and get to know you all better. I am a 2007 O’Gorman graduate and am so excited for the opportunity to immerse myself back into the O’Gorman culture and community! I attended elementary school at St. Lambert before attending O’Gorman Junior High and O’Gorman High School. Having been involved with the schools throughout most of my life, I am very familiar with the Cathedral/O’Gorman culture and tradition. I kickstarted my new position these past few months with lots of exciting events! First was Dakota Bowl, then Homecoming and Hall of Fame. Each festivity brings reunions and alumni traveling back to Sioux Falls for these thrilling events. Not to mention, we inducted a record number of 10 inductees into our Hall of Fame this year! Our Hall of Fame inductees are such incredible individuals that have accomplished some tremendous feats, and I was honored to have the opportunity to get acquainted with each of them. It was so nice to get to meet all the alumni and families that came back to attend both of these events. Again, I’m so excited to serve you all as your alumni specialist and bring you all the latest Knight news! Please feel free to reach out whenever with updates about you or your family or even just to chat and catch up on everything happening at O’Gorman. Blessings, Malorie Adamson, Alumni & Communications Specialist FROM THE BISHOP O’GORMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION I’m incredibly honored for the opportunity to serve as the next Executive Director of the Foundation. Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools have a long tradition of excellence, and I’m eager to work with our alumni and friends to help sustain our world-class Catholic education for generations to come. One simple way that you can support our mission is with a #TuesdayForTeachers gift now through Giving Tuesday on December 3rd. While our students continually outperform the city, state and nation on standardized tests, our teachers are paid an average of 15% less than their public school counterparts. In order to recruit and retain the best and brightest teachers, the Foundation is working hard to bridge the pay gap by growing key endowments for the long-term support of our committed staff. Any contribution, big or small, will make an impact. Look for details on page 15 on how you can support the effort. Thank you for supporting the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools Foundation; I’m amazed at the generosity of so many who contribute to the future of Catholic Schools. God Bless, Nicole R. Bruning, Executive Director In an effort to save money and a few trees, we are asking those who receive a paper copy of the Re-U-Knight-er to consider going digital. If you would like to move to a digital version, just go to www.ogknights.org/alumni/contact-form. You can also email madamson@ogknights.org or call 605-575-3360. A big thank you to those who have switched to e-issues already. Not only do we save on printing, but postage as well. If you received a digital copy but would prefer a paper copy, you can also contact Malorie at the above phone and email.

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools for their academic accomplishments for the year through the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on a school’s overall academic performance or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Every year, the U.S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates great American schools; schools that demonstrate that all students can achieve high levels. More than 9,000 schools across the country and 41 schools in South Dakota have been presented with this coveted award since the program’s inception in 1982. A total of just 362 schools nationwide were awarded with the honor in 2019. On November 14th and 15th, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education will celebrate with the 312 public and 50 non-public school honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. It is a tremendous honor to be named a National Blue Ribbon School. This year, three Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools were named exemplary high performing 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. O’Gorman Junior High, St. Katharine Drexel Elementary and St. Mary Elementary were all named with the honor.

Receiving this honor as a non-public school means that these schools have met the eligibility criteria to be qualified as an exemplary high performing school. This eligibility criteria includes the following: • That the achievement of the school’s students in the most recent year tested places the school in the top 15 percent in the nation in reading (or English language arts) and mathematics as measured by a nationally normed test or in the top 15 percent of its state as measured by a state test.
first stand-alone middle school/junior high to ever win National Blue Ribbon status in the state of South Dakota. A celebration assembly for the junior high was held on October 15th featuring performers and guest speakers congratulating the students and staff on this incredible achievement. They welcomed guest speakers, Bishop Paul Swain and Dr. Ben Jones, Secretary of Education from the South Dakota Department of Education. Following

This is a tremendous accomplishment for our schools as only 50 of the 34,576 non-public schools in the nation are recognized annually for this award. This is the first time a school other than the high school has been awarded this honor from Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. O’Gorman High School was recognized with this prestigious honor in 1985, 2005 and 2014. Our school is greatly humbled to receive this recognition and to continue the standard of excellence in Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools,” says O’Gorman Junior High Principal Wade Charron.
The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. “The St. Katharine Drexel School community is honored to be named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School. Our school staff, parents, and parish members are fully committed to the goal of forming children in an environment of academic
culture of learning, allowing students to reach their full potential. We share this achievement with the generations of families and former staff who planted the seeds that were cultivated through the good stewardship of others. We are very proud of our National Blue Ribbon status and

We are so proud of our students and staff for all their hard work in achieving this monumental honor. These accomplishments hold a lot of promise for the future. We can’t wait to see these kids continue on the path of excellence and continue to accomplish great achievements. The future of O’Gorman looks very bright indeed.

AVERA PARTNERSHIP “MOVING FORWARD WITH EXCELLENCE” CAMPAIGN ALLOWS FACILITY UPGRADES AT O’GORMAN CAMPUS Avera has been a long time partner and supporter of the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. The partnership stems from so many O’Gorman alumni looking to be employed with Avera when launching their careers after graduation. Avera is passionate about helping us with providing the best possible education to all our students and their potential future employees. They have greatly contributed to updating facilities and bettering the educational experience at our schools. With the completion of the 13-year “Building On Excellence” campaign, many renovation projects have been completed. 2004 FOOTBALL TEAM - EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS This football team is being honored today as they are an extremely notable team that achieved tremendous success on the field and ushered in a new era of dominance for the football program. With an undefeated season and a state title under their belt, they have exhibited what many other teams after them aspire to be. They captured the high school’s first state title in eleven years, with an offense that averaged more than 40 points per game behind a lightning fast offensive line as well as a starting defense that allowed an average of just 3.3 points per game. With seven two-way starters, this team exemplified mental toughness and resilience, starting what would become the longest winning streak in South Dakota bigschool football history (38 games), a record that still stands today. 2005 FOOTBALL TEAM – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS This team is full of incredible talent that kept the O’Gorman football tradition strong. They kept the momentum going from the previous year and played yet another undefeated season as well as winning another state title. These guys were trend setters and were the start of an amazing run in O’Gorman boys basketball. They were the first team to be coached by Derek Robey and won the first ever boys basketball state title for O’Gorman High School. Not only were they the first ever state champion for the high school in boys basketball but they were the spark that led to back to back state titles and five championships within a seven year period. This team also claimed the GDC championship and a district title finishing the season 21-4. 2006-2007 BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM – EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS This team kept the success in O’Gorman boys basketball going for another outstanding season. The team finished the season with a state title for back to back state titles for O’Gorman High School boys basketball. Starting the state tournament seeded fifth, they worked their way through the tournament all the way up to the championship game resulting in a Knights victory and finishing the season with a 16-9 record. They were also the first AA school to appear in the state championship game for four consecutive years. In this four year era, the Knights only lost 19 total games, they won the conference title three out of the four years and won the District 1AA four straight times. This team continued an unbelievable stretch of phenomenal O’Gorman boys basketball, paving the way for many more successful basketball seasons at O’Gorman High School.

KNIGHT NOTES Summer Reading Challenge More than 100 Holy Spirit Elementary students completed the Principal’s Summer Reading Challenge this year. Students who participated read for more than 600 minutes during the summer. They celebrated the achievement this August by decorating thier principal, Mr. Manning like an ice cream sundae!
Elementary School Fundraising Elementary school fundraisers have been a big success this fall! Christ the King and St. Katharine Drexel Walk-A-Thons, Holy Spirit’s Carnival, St. Mary’s Fall Festival and St. Lambert’s Rake-A-Thon all raised money for their respective schools. St. Michael’s Clean-A-Thon will be coming up this spring. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Grandparents Day Many elementary schools have celebrated Grandparents/Grandfriends day since the start of school. The schools invite students’ grandparents or grandfriends into the classroom to play Bingo, have snacks and see their students’ school. Corn Shucking with Lunchtime Solutions St. Lambert and St. Michael Elementary students helped shuck dozens of ears of corn this fall. The activity helped teach the students about locally grown food. Students from both schools shucked more than ten dozen ears of corn, which was then served as a part of lunch that week at all eight Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.
Homecoming Festivities Homecoming was a big event even for our youngest Knights! Most of our elementary schools celebrated O’Gorman’s Homecoming in September. St. Katharine Drexel had a mini-parade with handmade floats from every classroom, while Holy Spirit, St. Mary, St. Lambert and Christ the King all had pep rallies. Each event featured O’Gorman High School cheerleaders and members of the marching band.

12 NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS AT OGHS The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships. This year, 12 of the 38 students from South Dakota that qualified as National Merit SemiFinalists are from O’Gorman High School. That’s almost one third of the state’s National Merit Semi-Finalists from our high school alone! Only a small portion of the 1,600,000 entrants every year get a shot at the scholarships awarded through this program. This speaks to the quality of the education students receive at our schools. We have so many alumni that go on to accomplish truly amazing things. We are so proud to see our students rise to such greatness and achieve so much success with the help of our schools’ challenging and engaging curriculum and of course our phenomenal teachers who work with the students in the classrooms every day. We are so elated to see so many of our students achieve this incredible accomplishment! Congratulations to this hard working group of students! We wish you the best of luck as you progress towards making it to the finalist position. BOB BURNS DAKOTA BOWL XLI Dakota Bowl XLI was another successful event for the O’Gorman community, raising over $135,000 for all eight Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools! The intermittent rain couldn’t even damper all the fun to be had. Events kicked off with more than 300 kids that participated in the football and cheer camps that morning. Kids got the opportunity to learn what it takes to be an O’Gorman Knight football player and cheerleader. Later that day, the tailgating began where friends and family gathered in the parking lot at Howard Wood Field for food and fun before the big game. The Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools tailgate featured delectable food from Big Rig BBQ, Pizza Ranch and SDSU ice cream with 100% of the proceeds coming back to Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. The tailgate this year also included live music from the OGHS student band, Silver Valley! Once the Howard Wood Field gates opened, we kicked off our pre-game festivities. A special thanks to all of our incredible sponsors who made that possible. Due to weather, we weren’t able to have the skydivers jump but with the help of Dwight the Knight, we were able to land a football on the Coca-Cola target for a $5,000 gift from our Coca-Cola sponsor! The 2019 Woody Drey award went to Brad Coleman for his years of hard work and dedication to the Dakota Bowl football camp. This camp has helped instill the love of football into the hearts of countless future Knights over the years. Congratulations and a very special thank you to Brad Coleman! A group of our recently retired teachers presented the game ball this year including Doug Lindner, Paulette Klein, Gary Siska, Sr. Carmella Luke, Tyone Kruse, Doug Basche and Jeanice Finnegan. These teachers have dedicated MANY years to the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and we are truly grateful for their hard work and service to the schools and their students. The game was an upset, as Brandon Valley beat the Knights with a final score of 40-15. The Knights gave a good fight but couldn’t pull through to upset the number 2 ranked Lynx. Brandon Valley’s win made for a 2-2 record for the Lynx and Knights Dakota Bowl matchup. To view more photos from this year’s Dakota Bowl and watch the Knight Vision Video, sponsored by Family Eye Care Center, go to: www.ogknights.org/about/events/dakota-bowl.
GRIDIRON GREATNESS SERIES FEATURES TWO OGHS FOOTBALL TEAMS Another great pre-game festivity at Dakota Bowl XLI included the recognition of the 1988 O’Gorman varsity football team. The “Gridiron Greatness” series was a complete countdown of the top 10 best South Dakota high school football teams of all time. The 1988 team nabbed the #2 slot and the 2005 O’Gorman varsity football team also landed a spot in the countdown at #7.

#TUESDAYFOR TEACHERS Now through Tuesday, December 3, 2019

HELP US RESTORE THE O’G CLASS COMPOSITES! The composite photos in the hallways at O’Gorman High School have become a staple for the building. Whether you graduated 50 or more years ago or you just graduated last year, everyone loves to look at the class composites of all the O’Gorman graduates. The composites have been hanging in the high school hallways for decades now. Due to the amount of time these pictures have been out on display, a large portion of them have had a considerable amount of wear and tear. To keep these pictures in pristine condition, we have created a fund designated for the restoration of the composite photos. .
• Help keep the history of O’Gorman High School alive and well in our hallways! If you want to donate, please go to our Alumni Page on our website: www.ogknights.org/alumni/class-composites-fund. • Cost is about $500 per composite to have them restored. • Our goal is to raise a total of $19,000 to replace the 38 composites that are most in need of restoration. All damaged composites will be restored as the money is raised. Any money raised over the goal amount will be held in an account specifically for composite restorations so we can restore them in the future when needed. For any questions you may have about the composites, please contact Malorie Adamson at madamson@ogknights.org.

OGHS STUDENTS LEND
A HELPING HAND
DURING HOMECOMING
Photo: Argus Leader
Homecoming, a time to celebrate being an O’Gorman Knight! It always brings out the school spirit in us all. Homecoming encompassed festivities throughout the week at the high school including door decorating contests, fun themed dress down days, a variety show, Homecoming Royalty crowning, Hall of Fame inductions and of course the Homecoming football game took place at McEneaney Field! This year, students did something extra special for their community during homecoming week. As a true act of stewardship, students came together during the week to raise money for a Tornado Relief Fund. The fund was created to help support those individuals displaced from their homes at Auburn Hills apartments after three tornadoes tore through Sioux Falls just a week prior. The apartment building was hit hard by the vicious storm which resulted in the roof being torn off the complex and the building being condemned. Residents that lived there were evacuated from the building and little to none of their personal belongings were salvageable after the storm had passed. The relief fund was set up to help those families get back on their feet after having their lives turned upside down from this grizzly storm. O’Gorman High School students went above and beyond and were able to raise over $12,000 for these families in need! The funds were evenly distributed to each resident of the Auburn Hills apartments to help them find a new place to call home. The generosity our students have shown during their homecoming week is truly inspiring. Thank you to all our students, families and the community for your generous contributions towards this effort! The Auburn Hills apartments are located just across the street from the O’Gorman High School campus. The school was very fortunate to not have received any significant damage from the storm itself as it was right on the edge of the tornado’s path. The Auburn Hills apartment building was purchased by the Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools in June of 2018 with the plan of utilizing it for the International Student Program. The facility will be fixed up and renovated to support the boarding of international students by the fall of 2020.
