Welcome to the SFGN Fall Arts & Entertainment Guide

Norm Kent We are coming to the end of a long, hot summer. Labor Day 2013 is upon us. Our gay community, from Key West to Palm Beach is thriving amazingly. Growing in stature and size, in breadth and diversity, more of you find us online, as we try to catch up with you from Duval Street in Key West to University Drive in Coral Springs. Today, we showcase in print the breadth and diversity of our emerging and intertwining multinational cultures, enriching our lives with arts and entertainment. Welcome then to the show that never ends; to SFGN’s first ever Fall Arts and Entertainment Guide! South Florida has often been demeaned for not having culture, but the truth has always

been quite different. The South Florida arts scene is thoroughly vibrant, and enhances your LGBT newspaper every fall. Just flipping through this booklet demonstrates the energy and nature of our community’s daily options and engaging nightlife. Honestly, we thought this section was at first going to be a small insert into our first issue of the fall. But this new guide will keep you abreast of everything from the rocking to the rolling, all making intriguing headlines. You can plan a group function at the Broward College Speakers’ Series and sit down with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. or schedule a gay bachelor party at the new Swinging Richards’ in Pompano. Whatever your disposition or desire, there is much for you to do in the South Florida night this fall. From museums in West Palm, to monthly boxing matches at the Manor Entertainment Complex, there is diversity and breadth, featuring actors and music, or film festivals as traditional as the one hitting the Gateway Theater this month, or as cutting edge as the Miami and Fort Lauderdale gay fests. We are home to a schedule of plays as enriching as The Book of Mormon, courtesy of Broadway in Fort Lauderdale, or Dance Theater as unprecedented as

the Duncan Theatre fall schedule. We are home to sculpture gardens and sand castles, symphonies, dinner theaters, and the Miami City Ballet. You can go snorkeling with dolphins in the morning, catch a Dolphins game in the afternoon, bare it all for Broward House at the Hard Rock, and then gamble to your heart’s content in the Seminole Casino. You have choices from horse racing, featuring the sport of kings, to magnificent gay choruses, featuring scores of queens. Can I say that? The LGBT community is growing, and we have a presence in big places like the Kravis Center in the Palm Beaches, Broward Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale and Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center to the smaller venues like Delray Beach Center for the Arts, Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts, Coral Gables Arts Cinema and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. We have iconic venues like the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West, where our history is rich, and our lives are enriched. This newspaper and this issue is dedicated to illuminating and showcasing the times and treasures of our lives. Hopefully, it is a keepsake on your coffee table until our Winter Guide comes out after the holidays in January.

feature preview ‘The Future of Mankind Depends on It’ SAVE Dade’s Hellrotika is back, except it’s not Hellrotika anymore Jacob Long

Each year SAVE Dade’s annual Halloween bash is a must attend event in Miami. This year they’ve ditched Hellrotika and have rebranded it as Armageddon.

It’s hard to top Hellrotika’s — ehm, Armageddon’s — pitch for its annual Halloween party, a themed night of dressing up, getting sloshed, and dancing the night away — complete with contests and runways. “The countdown has begun. They are coming. We must seek shelter from the Invaders,” the event’s website reads. “As you may be aware, there have been several isolated alien attacks in major cities across the globe. These Invaders seek to deplete our natural resources and in the process enslave us. They transform the humans they encounter into zombie-like warriors and slaves, expanding their army and support.” The theme came up because, well, it’s “very hot right,” said Adriana Oliva, who was hired by SAVE Dade to plan the ball and promote it. It’s also being used to restart Hellrotika under a new image. “It’s the end of the world,” Oliva told SFGN. “The idea is that when you come to the event, you join the resistance or you can be on the invaders’ side.” Be good or bad, alien or human, it’s your choice and it’s “interactive.” How do you defend yourself (if you choose)? Well, show up at the Miami Beach Convention Center, of course, the night of Oct. 26 around 10 p.m. “You will receive more instructions upon arrival and be given a liquid elixir that will make you immune to becoming a zombie slave.” Traditionally, the event has been revamped every few years, so restarting it now is not a surprise, considering Hellrotika was only around for three or four years, Oliva said. Last year’s Greek-inspired Hellrotika drew almost a thousand people. “We’re expecting between 1,200 and 1,500 people to show up.” To help accomplish this, DJing the event will be the Resistance’s “fearless leader,” Tracy Young. Tickets are on sale now. Go to http://bit. ly/14z8hea to purchase. For more information, go to savedade.org.

New Artistic Director Makes Her Mark on Miami City Ballet J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

Lourdes Lopez, the new artistic director of the Miami City Ballet, coaches aspiring ballerinas at the company’s Miami Beach school. Photo courtesy of Daniel Azouley

Even though she has one season under her belt, Miami City Ballet’s new artistic director, Lourdes Lopez, still has plenty of surprises for the internationally acclaimed company’s fans. When she took over, Lopez inherited a season already programmed by her predecessor, the company’s founder, Edward Villela. “The fact that it had already been planned allowed me to be a caretaker,” Lopez explained. “I had time to get to know the dancers, assess the company, get to the DNA of the Miami City Ballet. You have to have a feel for the dancers, how they work, how they rehearse and how it all relates to the performances on stage. I think my first season was a success.” This October, audiences will get their first taste of Lopez’s vision for the company, Program I: First Ventures, featuring the company premiere of choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s breakthrough contemporary ballet, Polyphonia, along with two classic George Balanchine ballets, Ballo de Regina, set to music by Verdi, and Serenade, with music by Tchaikovsky. In addition to Miami City Ballet’s traditional holiday offering, Balanchine’s

choreography of Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, Lopez will introduce four new works to the company’s repertoire, crossing many dance idioms, including Jerome Robbins’ exciting ballet to the Broadway classic, West Side Story. “It’s a very ambitious (season) because there are four new works that are entering the rep. These are new works and they have styles and genres the dancers have never danced. Not that it’s alien, but it’s unfamiliar territory,” said Lopez. “I wanted to challenge them. A dancer’s life is so short and what you want to say at the end of your career is I danced as much as I could.” And she adds—in the case of West Side Story—act and sing, too: “It’s going to be amazing.” Miami City Ballet presents Program I: First Ventures at Miami’s Arsht Center (Oct. 18-20), the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale (Oct. 25-27) and the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach (Nov. 15-17). George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker will be performed at the Arsht Center (Dec. 19-24), Kravis Center (Dec. 27-29) and Broward Center (Jan. 3 – 5). There are three reasons the Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables, has become one of the region’s most popular movie theaters, says Robert Rosenberg, executive director. documentary programming. And then he really starts to have fun: “We like to think of the Cinema as a yearround film festival,” he explained. “There are always events, opening night parties, panel discussions, Skype conversations with filmmakers and costume contests going on.” LGBT audiences will be particularly interested in the special run of the Israeli film, Out in the Dark, director Michael Mayer’s first feature film, opening Sept. 27. Acclaimed Israeli television actor Michael Aloni and newcomer Nicholas Jacob star as a pair of star-crossed lovers who defy the narrow view of love held by their differing cultures. Aloni plays an Israeli lawyer while Jacob portrays a Palestinian student, hiding his sexual orientation from his family for fear of retribution. Mayer explores the difficult topic of sexuality in the Middle East and creates a poignant tale of true love and acceptance. For more information and show times, go to GablesCinema.com.

a&e music Lesbian Conductor Breaks Down Barriers in Classical Music World J.W. Arnold

South Florida Symphony Music Director Sebrina Maria Alfonso has built an internationally acclaimed career. Photo courtesy of Stephen Shires

As one of the few women leading a professional symphony orchestra in the United States, South Florida Symphony Music Director Sebrina Maria Alfonso knows a thing or two about the so-called “glass ceiling.” “It doesn’t help that this is a scary time for the arts,” Alfonso explained, noting the financial stress the Great Recession has placed on non-profit arts organizations. “There are more and more women conductors, but it doesn’t help that many orchestras are in trouble and tend to make safer bets….that makes the field smaller and doesn’t leave a lot of room for women.” And, for a female conductor who also happens to be a lesbian, the opportunities can be even fewer and far between. At one point earlier in her career, after founding the symphony in her home, Key West, Alfonso was invited to audition for a major orchestra. “They wanted me, but they had to go through the (audition) process….I’m not

going to do it, I told myself….live somewhere where I have to be closeted again,” she recalled. “Just as the current generation of children have only known a black president, in 10 or 15 years, if orchestras survive—like gay rights—our patrons will be more open minded and accepting.” Even if the South Florida Symphony is “the orchestra with a lesbian conductor,” Alfonso knows that ultimately it’s the music she makes with her colleagues that must speak to audiences and break down barriers. “Once people experience the music, the rest of the baggage just goes away,” she said. The South Florida Symphony opens its 16th season with A Soul Unfettered, featuring music by Edward Elgar, Samuel Barber and Franz Schubert, with concerts at the Delray Center for the Arts in Delray Beach (Nov. 16), Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale (Nov. 18) and Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (Nov. 19). The hit musical, The Book of Mormon, from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, headlines the 2013-14 Broadway season in South Florida. Photo courtesy of Joan Marcus

With three world class performing arts centers located less than 100 miles apart, South Florida has no trouble attracting the latest and greatest road shows emanating from the Great White Way. And, the 2013-14 season is no exception. Without doubt, the hottest ticket in town will be the South Florida premiere of The Book of Mormon (Nov. 26-Dec. 22) at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Tony Award-winning best musical from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Robert Lopez (Avenue Q), is an irreverent blast on the Mormon Church’s practice of sending young missionaries to the furthest reaches of the globe in the hunt for new converts. In addition to The Book of Mormon, Broadway Across America presents

productions at Miami’s Arsht Center and the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Miami season opens with Mamma Mia! (Oct. 11-13), the stalwart sing-along with a score from ABBA classics, and Chicago (Oct. 9-22), Kander & Ebb’s musical court room drama, opens in Fort Lauderdale. For more information, go to BroadwayAcrossAmerica.com. In West Palm Beach, the Kravis on Broadway season kicks off—literally—with those high stepping mavens, the Rockettes, in Radio City Christmas Spectacular (Nov. 29 – Dec. 8). This is the same show that packs the crowds in each holiday season at Radio City Music Hall, complete with the March of the Toy Soldiers, nativity celebration and visit from Santa Claus, himself. Boca Theater Company Takes (Another) Leap of Faith Slow Burn opens fifth season with ‘Next to Normal’ and partners with Aventura Arts and Cultural Center J.W. Arnold

jw@prdconline.com

In its first four seasons, Slow Burn Theatre has built a reputation as a plucky company that’s willing to make some risky bets, treating audiences to avant garde, lesser known musicals like Urinetown, Bat Boy, Side Show and Blood Brothers. But, what’s frustrated theater lovers most is the company’s conservative approach, opting for shorter, two weekend runs at the performing arts center at West Boca High. This decision by founders Matthew Korinko and Patrick Fitzwater left their critically acclaimed productions ineligible for the region’s professional theater awards, the Carbonells, and forced audiences to scramble for seats on busy weekends. “We’ve always wanted to have longer runs, but it wasn’t always financially possible,” explained Korinko. “At the same time, we’ve also always been anxious to get on to the next show.” “These are shows that people should see. If you’re not in New York at the right time,

you might not get to see them,” he lamented. For their fifth season, the company will be bringing two productions to the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, giving north Miami-Dade audiences an opportunity to see what all the buzz has been about. “It’s a great way to extend our run and reach different audiences by partnering with Aventura (Arts and Cultural Center). It saves that added expense and we can accomplish the longer run everyone has been requesting,” he said. The Aventura center has offered popular cabaret series and dance performances, but few musical theater productions, making the arrangement a win-win for all. Most importantly, the partnership will provide the growth necessary for the company to begin pursuing corporate sponsorships and foundation grants. “We’re ready for some growing pains,” he concluded. Slow Burn Theatre opens its fifth

season with Next to Normal, the Tony Award-winning musical, at West Boca High School (Oct. 18-20, 25-27) and

Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (Nov. 1-3). For tickets and more information, go to SlowBurnTheatre.org.

Lourdes Lopez/Miami City Ballet

The finest ballet companies and dancers from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Italy, Hungary, Germany and the United States will be showcased in the XVIII Annual Ballet Festival of Miami (Sept. 7 – 8) at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jack Gleason Theatre. The performances cap off a week of workshops, recitals and educational programs. For tickets and more information, go to InternationalBalletFestival.org.

Modern dance company Pilobolus returns to Miami’s Arsht Center (Oct. 2526) with another program of contemporary contortions. Words can’t describe the amazing moves these limber performers take as they seamlessly morph from one human “structure” to the next. For tickets, go to ArshtCenter.org.

Arts Ballet Theatre of South Florida, Vladimir Isaaev’s plucky Miami-Dadebased dance company, opens its season with Program I, including ballets set to music by opening at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St. in Aventura. Isaaev’s imaginative setting of Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, The

Nutcracker, follows, with performances at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre (Dec. 8), Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (Dec. 13-15) and Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse (Dec. 21-22). For tickets and more information, go to ArtsBalletTheatre.org

Concerts & Comedy Hard Rock Live, at the Hard Rock Casino and Resort in Hollywood, also has a first class lineup, with country queen Loretta Lynn (Sept. 15), R&B legend Lionel Ritchie (Sept. 18) and the self-proclaimed “Queen of Mean,” comic Lisa Lampanelli (Sept. 22). Later this fall, Barenaked Ladies take the stage (Oct. 30), followed by one of the LGBT community’s greatest supporters, Cyndi Lauper (Nov. 9), and Bonnie Raitt (Nov. 30). West Palm Beach’s Cruzan Amphitheatre, 601-7 Sansburys Way, is the only venue that sells RV and camper parking, but don’t let that fool you, because the venue still attracts top notch talent: crooner John Mayer (Sept. 8), rockers Maroon 5 (Sept. 14), and the Australian country singer Keith Urban, who also happens to be the current Mr. Nicole Kidman (Oct. 5). For tickets, go to Ticketmaster.com. soflagaynews //

The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, 1700 Washington Ave., kicks off its fall concert season with an LGBT favorite, The Pet Shop Boys (Sept. 12), followed by India Arie (Oct. 13), teen singer Austin Mahone (Oct. 17), hunky young rapper/ singer Jake Miller (Nov. 1) and John Legend (Nov. 3). If you’ve been glued to the television this summer, the best acts from the NBC reality competition, America’s Got Talent, take the stage at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center (Oct. 5), or rock out to the retro sounds of ABBA tribute band, Björn Again, at Fort Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse (Oct. 10).

Film The Classic Gateway will also serve as a primary venue for the fifth annual Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Oct. 10-13. In the early years, the festival was sort of a “neglected stepchild” to the much larger, two week long Miami event; however, now the festivals are held in different seasons and programmers are bringing many of the higher quality films, shorts and documentaries to Broward, too, along with all the parties, panel discussions and events that have made the Miami festival one of the best in the country. For festival selections and show times, check FLGLFF.com.

Hunky heroes will be featured on the big screen this fall, including the returns of action star Vin Diesel in Riddick (Sept. 6) and the handsome Hemsworth brothers in a pair of highly anticipated sequels. Chris dons his Nordic finest in Thor: The Dark World (Nov. 8), followed by younger bro Liam in Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Nov. 22). And Chris Pine (Star Trek) comes down to Earth to assume the role of Jack Ryan in the longrunning Tom Clancy franchise (Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games), opening Dec. 25.

Magic Mike star Matthew McConaughy takes another dramatic turn in the highly anticipated The Dallas Buyers Club (Nov. 1), the dramatic story of an AIDS patient who turns to smuggling experimental medications over the border from Mexico. The actor reportedly dropped 30 to 40 pounds for the role, setting tabloid chatter abuzz last year.

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) will welcome several big names, including Anna Paquin (True Blood), Ed Asner (Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant) Ann-Margret (Viva Las Vegas) and gay icon Tab Hunter, Oct. 8 – Nov. 11. As usual, the festival offers dozens of screenings, celebrity events and parties. For a full schedule, go to FLIFF.com.

The girls haven’t been left out in the fall chill, with the release of Bettie Page Reveals All (Nov. 29), a documentary about the legendary pin-up model made famous by South Florida photographer Bunny Yaeger.

And, just in time for the holidays, studios will roll out comedies. The Norman Rockwellesque traditional family gathering gets turned on its head in Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas (Dec. 13), while Will Ferrell returns to the screen as one of his iconic characters in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. If the local Cineplex is your destination of choice for the latest Hollywood blockbuster, you won’t be disappointed as the studios continue to offer plenty of retreads of profitable film franchises: Science fiction and fantasy fans will have their appetites satiated by a remake of Stephen King’s classic, Carrie (Oct. 18), and the second installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug (Dec. 13). Broward County is a good place to be for film buffs this fall. The Classic Gateway Theatre, 1820 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, continues its second annual Classic Film Festival through Sept. 26, spotlighting 16 alltime greats, including Bridge on the River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, An Affair to Remember, All About Eve and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. For show times, go to ClassicGateway.com. Finally, The Wizard of Oz becomes the latest classic film—thanks to technology— to get a 3-D makeover. Every groundbreaking frame of the Technicolor original was scanned and sampled for a one-week special engagement, beginning Sept. 20 at local IMAX theatres, and promising that L. Frank Baum’s magical land of Oz comes to life like never before. Check local listings for theaters and show times.

Television Actress and television personality Iris Acker, host of the long running On Stage with Iris Acker on BECON-TV, Broward County’s educational network, will be offering a new take on the local arts scene as her show debuts a new name, Spotlight on the Arts, and a celebrity panel format. Florida Theater on Stage critic Bill Hirschman, actress Karen Stephens, and openly gay, award-winning playwright and actor Michael McKeever will join Acker for a lively weekly discussion about all the latest productions and events on the region’s stages. Check local listings for show times.

The unexpected cancellations of NBC’s gay parenting comedy, The New Normal, and TVLand’s Happily Divorced, based on the real life experience of star Fran Drescher and her gay ex-husband, have left ABC’s Modern Family as one of the only scripted network shows this season featuring gay characters. Of course, we will always have plenty of gay “characters” on Bravo’s never ending cavalcade of reality TV train wrecks.

South Florida is certainly a cultural melting pot and the 2nd Annual Miami World Music Festival (Sept. 19-22) celebrates this diversity with concerts of music from France, Spain, Cuba, Africa, Venezuela and India. Experience the zarzuela, SpanishCuban vocal music, or lose yourself in the exotic sounds of Indian sitars at Florida International University’s Wertheim Concert Hall in southwest Miami. For tickets, go to MiamiWorldMusicFestival.com.

In Miami, thousands regularly turn out each second Saturday of the month in Wynwood to admire the famous Wynwood Walls, as well as the burgeoning nearby Design District and its trendy boutiques and galleries. Food trucks and street musicians contribute to the festive atmosphere. On the first Saturday of the month, art lovers head to Lincoln Road for the South Beach Art Walk, starting at the Art Center/South Florida and winding up at commercial pop artist Romero Britto’s gallery. And for a crash course in Cuban culture, Viernes Culturales in Little Havana takes place on the last Friday of the month. For more information, go to ArtOfMiami.com/bestof/art-walks.

Delray Beach has emerged as one of Palm Beach County’s redevelopment success stories, attracting lots of restaurants, boutiques and art galleries along the quaint downtown strip. On the third Thursday of the month, Artists Alley, an exciting new artist warehouse area in the Pineapple Grove Arts District, hosts open studios. For more information, go to ArtistsAlleyDelray.com.

Of course, our fall arts & entertainment preview would not be complete without mentioning Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art fare that has put MiamiDade on the map each December (Dec. 5-8), attracting jetsetting glitterati and high-end arts collectors alike. While the center of attention will again be the official Art Basel exhibition at the Miami Beach Convention Center, much of the excitement and attendant glamour can also be found at satellite events, such as Art Miami, Pulse, Scope and the Miami Project at galleries downtown, as well as Wynwood, South Beach and the Design District. For more information, go to ArtBasel.com. In Fort Lauderdale, check out the city’s emerging North Beach arts and design district on the first Saturday of the month, located just north of Oakland Park Blvd. and west of A1A, for a nice mix of boutiques and gallery exhibitions. But, the big event is the last Saturday art walk hosted in FAT Village, just north of downtown and off Andrews Blvd. Take in a show at Andrews Living Arts or browse the work of many live-in artists. The Symphony of the Americas, Broward County’s professional orchestra, opens its 26th season with The Mystery of the Tango (Oct. 15), a special program in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month at the Broward Center. The Symphony will highlight the brilliant music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Nov. 12) with Pianist Alexander Kobrin performing the Concerto for Piano, No. 20 in d minor, and closing with the composer’s Symphony No. 40. Maestro James BrooksBruzzese will then ring in the holidays with the Cathedral Choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale in A Chorus of Season’s Greetings (Dec. 10). For tickets, go to SymphonyOfTheAmericas.org. The Gold Coast Jazz Society opens its 2013 season with the Frank Derrick Big Band (Nov. 13) performing the music of Buddy Rich and continuing with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton and the Shelly Berg Trio in a program titled, From Johnny to Joni (Dec. 11). Both concerts will be presented in the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theatre. For tickets, go to BrowardCenter.org. One of the most popular live music venues in South Florida is Delray Beach’s Arts Garage. Yes, it’s an intimate, versatile performance space located in an actual garage, but the magic is in the programming. Almost every weekend this fall, some of the region’s most dynamic blues and jazz performers will be taking the stage, including Nicole Henry, Duffy Jackson, Jeff Harnar, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Randy Brecker, Dick Hyman, Peter Bernstein, Carmen Bradford and the Pfister Sisters. Best part? It’s a BYOB venue and tickets are only $25-35. For a complete schedule and reservations, go to ArtsGarage.org.

The South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, the region’s LGBT and allies concert band, has drawn international acclaim. The 60-member wind ensemble, under the baton of Dan Bassett, opens its season with All’s Fair in Love and War (Nov. 9), a musical exploration of man’s two greatest passions, at the Broward Center. For tickets, go to PrideWindEnsemble.org. What better way to usher in the holiday season than to attend a concert by one of the region’s gay men’s choruses? Dr. Gary Keating’s Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, celebrating its 27th season, offers its holiday concert with the Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Swing into the Holidays (Dec. 6-7), at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, 1 Las Olas Blvd. Be prepared for the chorus’ signature combination of classics and camp for Christmas and Chanukah. For tickets, go to TheFtLGMC.org. The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, 150 strong under the direction of Artistic Director Gordon Roberts, observe the holidays with Heaven and Nature Sing (Dec. 13-14, 20-21) at Fort Lauderdale’s Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Ave. For tickets, go to SouthFloridaGayMensChorus.org. Voices of Pride, the gay men’s chorus of the Palm Beaches, performs at B.B. For more information and tickets, go to Voices of Pride.org. The Miami Gay Men’s Chorus marks its 15th anniversary season with Bells in Boyland (Dec. 20-22), a theatrical concert at the Colony Theatre on Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road. But first, plan to attend Oliver Button is a Sissy (Sept. 22), a special musical presentation from Insignia, the chorus’ small vocal ensemble, at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 DeSoto Blvd. For more information and tickets, go to MiamiGayChorus.org.

Local Theater Promises a Fun-Filled Fall Season Broward Stage Door is typically known for big musicals and chestnuts from the likes of Neil Simon, but the company is turning to Jonathan Tolin’s The Twilight of the Golds (Sept. 20-Oct. 27), the thought-provoking play that raises the question whether parents would terminate a pregnancy if they knew the child was genetically predisposed to grow up gay. The drama promises to turn traditional notions of sexual orientation and a woman’s right to choose on their head. For tickets, go to StageDoorTheatre.com. Palm Beach County continues to be home for some of the strongest regional companies. Palm Beach Dramaworks, 201 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach, offers one of the greatest dramas of all time, John Steinback’s Of Mice and Men (Oct. 11 – Nov. 10), followed by John Goldman’s gripping play, The Lion in Winter. For tickets, go to PalmBeachDramaworks.org. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter turns to a classic whodunit, Dial M for Murder (Oct. 27 – Nov. 10), to open its season but then quickly returns to its bread and butter, big impeccably-produced Broadway musicals, this time proving “the sun will come up tomorrow” with Annie (Dec. 3-22).

For tickets, go to JupiterTheatre.org. The Theatre at Arts Garage in Delray Beach opens its season with The Longing and the Short of It (Nov. 1-24), a deliriously funny song cycle written by Daniel Mate and directed by resident Artistic Director Lou Tyrrell. Arts Garage is a wonderful, intimate space, well suited to these types of productions. For tickets, go to ArtsGarage.org. And, all eyes will be on the newest company in South Florida, The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton. Marilynn Wick, the extremely successful businesswoman behind Costume World and The Broadway Collection, moved into the former Caldwell Theatre this summer and is promising a line-up of classic Broadway shows. Her new costume museum will also be opening in November. She opens the season with The Sound of Music (Sept. 19 – Oct. 20) and follows with Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (Nov. 14-Dec. 25), all staged with the original Broadway costumes. For tickets, go to TheWick.org. For more theaters and shows check out SFGN’s listings section in the back of the book.

South Florida is fortunate to boast a wide range of non-profit regional companies, even if the economy has culled a few, particularly in Broward County. But, audiences can still experience the full range of the theater repertoire from big musicals and experimental works to the great dramas. Coral Gables remains an epicenter for theater in Miami-Dade County, with Actors Playhouse at the Miracle Theater opening its season with Ruthless the Musical (Oct. 9 –Nov. 3) and continuing with Sean Grennan’s new comedy, Making God Laugh (Dec. 4 – 29), while down at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave., Joseph Adler’s Gablestage gets a late start (Nov. 23 – Dec. 22), bringing the Off Broadway hit, My Name is Asher Lev, to South Florida. For tickets, go to ActorsPlayhouse.org and Gablestage.org. The Arsht Center’s Theater Up Close series launches with Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, based on the tales of Ovid, in partnership with the University of Miami. The 2002 Drama Desk Award-winning play makes its much-anticipated regional premiere in the Carnival Studio Theatre. For tickets, go to ArshtCenter.org. Zoetic Stage, also in residence at Miami’s Arsht Center, offers the world premiere of company co-founder Christopher Demos-

Brown’s new play, Fear Up Harsh (Nov. 7 – 24). In just three seasons, Zoetic has staked out a place as one of the region’s most inventive companies, thanks to the original works from Demos-Brown and co-founder Michael McKeever and expert direction from Stuart Meltzer. The museum’s archives currently contain more than 5,000 items, and document a century of LGBT cultural and social history with an emphasis on the southeastern United States. The collection has been professionally catalogued and is maintained according to strict conservation standards. It is used by community leaders, writers, scholars, researchers, historians, and members of the general public. Among the many treasures in the archives are our extensive pulp fiction

collection; organizational records of local, national and regional LGBT organizations; our large serials collection; personal records of local and national personalities; the Joel Starkey Collection; gay erotica –pictorial works; and LGBT ephemera, film, audio and oral histories. The Archives recently added a significant collection of material donated by the Dade Human Rights Foundation. Materials were also added to the collection from GLSEN of South Florida.
