Christiana Lilly right that Americans have had for 49 years decades was snatched away when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade June 24, the ultimate attack on abortion rights that have slowly been peeled away across the country. President Joe Biden addressed the nation that afternoon, calling the decision an “unAmerican attack” and that the court was “literally taking America back 150 years.” “Now with Roe gone, let me be clear, the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk,” he said. “It was three justices named by one president, Donald Trump, who upended the scales of justice and the fundamental right of women in this country.” From Wilton Manors to the White House, here are how people in the community and allies are reacting to the news: TransInclusive Group, a Wilton Manorsbased nonprofit working to protect equality for trans and LGBTQ+ people in South Florida, said in a statement to SFGN: “Transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals, particularly Black and Brown individuals of transgender experience, face discrimination and violence at alarming rates. Abortion access is a vital part of reproductive healthcare for those who can get pregnant. Rolling back these protections is yet another form of violence that will disproportionately impact communities and individuals who are already facing healthcare disparities, discrimination, and legislative attacks on their identity and existence.”

The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida even put out a statement, saying they were “horrified” by the reversal. CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers, said in a statement: “The Court’s opinion is impactful in the worst way possible. The repercussions will be deadly. Pregnant people will be forced to carry pregnancies against their will, risking their health and their lives. Nearly half of the women of reproductive age in the United States, and more people who can become pregnant, live in the 26 states that will likely move to ban abortion, meaning more than 36 million people will feel the effects of this decision.” Equality Florida doubled down on its prochoice stance: “Equality Florida has been a pro-choice organization since 1997 because the rights to sexual autonomy and reproductive freedom are causes we all have in common. We will continue the fight to secure reproductive freedom and access to abortion for our communities.” In a video, Florida Rep. Carlos G. Smith discussed the connection between abortion rights and the LGBTQ community, saying, “There’s a clear intersection between abortion and LGBTQ issues. The religious right keeps imposing their definition of family, marriage, gender, and sexuality to try and control us. But we’re all in the fight to defend abortion access together!” Florida Agricultural Commissioner Nikki Fried, who is running for Florida governor, tweeted a video message promising to protect women and that she is the “only candidate for governor of Florida who has never supported banning abortion.” Rep. Ted Deutch, whose 22nd District includes Wilton Manors and other parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties, simultaneously applauded the gun safety law that passed while also sharing his disdain for SCOTUS’ actions. In an email blast, the Congressional LGBTQ+ Caucus responded to the news, as well as Justice

Clarence Thomas saying that gay marriage is next: “Today’s decision will result in millions of people — including LGBTQ+ people — being stripped of their bodily autonomy and access to abortion care,” said Congressman David N. Cicilline, chair of the caucus. “If the Supreme Court is willing to reverse decades of precedent and strip away a fundamental constitutional right, no right is safe. As Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, I am also extremely disturbed by Justice Thomas’ call for the Court to revisit seminal LGBTQ+ rights cases like Lawrence v. Texas and Obergefell v. Hodges. As we mark the anniversary of both of those Supreme Court decisions in two days, today’s decision is a reminder that all fundamental rights could be on the line under the current Supreme Court radical conservative majority.” Through a post on Medium, former President Barack Obama wrote, “If the Supreme Court ultimately decides to overturn the landmark case of Roe v. Wade, then it will not only reverse nearly 50 years of precedent — it will relegate the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues.” Former First Lady Michelle Obama tweeted that she was “heartbroken” over the decision.

IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE G QUEER
KESHA OPENS UP ABOUT SEXUALITY Pop Icon Kesha took to Instagram on June 16 to address her sexuality. “I’m not gay. I’m not straight. I don’t know what I am. I love people. I love people because we are all our own little consciousness journeys, dancing around the sun.” This isn’t the first time she has opened up about her sexuality. In an interview with Attitude in 2019, she said she was bisexual and in an open relationship with her boyfriend. “He knows that I’m just a wild spirit that needs to run free, and that I always come back to the barn for apples from my boy,” the singer said of her relationship at the time. She also celebrated Bi Visibility Day in 2021 by kissing Betty Who on stage during a performance. “How weird and interesting and fun this

NONBINARY COMPOSER-LYRICIST WINS TONY AWARD FOR MUSICAL
Toby Marlow, co-creator of “Six: The Musical,” took home the Tony for best original score, making Marlow the first nonbinary composer-lyricist to win a Tony. “It just feels really amazing to be part of a season where there’s so much queerness on stage explicitly,” said Marlow. “Representation is pretty fab.” The musical is based on the six wives of King Henry VIII and is a modern retelling of their lives. During the show, the Queens take turns singing and telling their story to see who suffered the most during their marriage and who should be the group’s lead singer. “Six: The Musical” also received five Olivier Award nominations, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music.

OLYMPIC CHAMPION KELLY HOLMES COMES OUT
Kelly Holmes, an Olympic champion, has come out as gay, revealing that she was nervous and excited about the public response. Holmes, who won two gold medals on the track at the 2004 Games in Athens, said she had known she was gay since she was 17. “I needed to do this now, for me. It was my decision. I’m nervous about saying it. I feel like I’m going to explode with excitement,” Holmes told the Sunday Mirror newspaper. Before her athletic career, Holmes was an army officer and hid her sexuality out of fear for repercussions since Britain did not allow LGBT people to serve in the military until 2000. Her fears were alleviated when she contacted a military LGBT leader in 2020 who assured her that she would not face sanctions for coming out. “I was convinced throughout my whole life that if I admitted to being gay in the

TOWN JOINS COUNTY IN NDO FOR LGBT
In a recent vote, the town council of Cary, North Carolina, decided to join the Wake County decision on a nondiscrimination ordinance. According to The News and Observer, NDO will protect “sexual orientation and gender identity, the ordinance protects people against discrimination based on ethnicity, race, natural hair and hairstyles, pregnancy, veteran status and disability.” The town unanimously voted in favor of the ordinance and hopes that this will allow for LGBT people to feel welcomed and safe. “The policy establishes Cary’s intent that no member of a protected class should be subject to discrimination under any program or activity administered by Cary,” said Rashonda Harris, Cary’s diversity, equity and inclusion manager,

during a presentation at the meeting, reported by The News and Observer. The town joins other cities in Wake County like Apex, Morrisville, Raleigh, and Knightsdale in a step toward inclusion. “This is an action-oriented council and this showcases our commitment to do things that really matter,” said Councilwoman Lori Bush.
KENTUCKY ANTI-GAY DISCRIMINATION LEADS TEACHER OF THE YEAR TO QUIT After 17 years of working as a public school teacher, Willie Carver Jr., who identifies as a gay man, has decided to leave K-12 teaching to move into a position at the University of Kentucky. Last May, Carver stood at school board meetings to discuss the wave of anti-gay discrimination and harrassment he and his students had received. “The national rhetoric is turned up, and LGBTQ teachers bear the weight of a lot of hatred that catalyzes the vitriol. It’s tiring,” Carver said to the Lexington Herald Leader. Carver will be taking up a position at UK in student social services as an academic advisor to the Gatton College for Business and Economics, reports the Lexington Herald Leader. “I also increasingly find that, as a queer person in K-12 education, I have been

WOMEN AND LGBT PEOPLE COULD BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR PRESIDENCY
On June 21, the White House decided that they will be revising federal law to clarify that women and an LGBT person are eligible to become president of the United States. Currently legislation implies all presidents will have female spouses, by referring to the president’s “wife.” Now, the 21st Century President Act would any gender specific identifiers and replacing words like “wife” with more inclusive words like “spouse.” “Although we still have a long way to go, both in equality and representation, our country’s government is growing closer to finally representing our nation’s brilliant diversity. Our laws must reflect the fact that a president and their spouse can be of any gender,” Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) said during his speech on the House floor

according to The Hill. Kamala Harris’ historic swearing in during the 2020 inauguration marked a shift in power and representation in American history, and language in legislation is evolving from that moment.
HAWAII LAWS PASS TO AFFIRM LGBT PEOPLE
Hawaii Gov. David Ige signed three bills that allow for insurance coverage in gender affirming treatment, allow LGBTQ+ jury participation and establish a state LGBTQ+ Commission. “My hope is that we send a strong message across the nation that while some states are looking backwards, Hawaii will continue to move forward,” said Representative Adrian Tam (D-Wakiki). Tam, 29, is Hawaii’s lone gay state legislator. He won his election by defeating the leader of Hawaii’s Proud Boys chapter. Tam said the winning formula was to ignore the hate group’s tactics. Tam co-chairs Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus and is running for reelection this year. His campaign slogan is “people over politics” and Tam said the focus is bringing down the cost of living.

Meanwhile, Ige said the three new laws will “help identify social and community issues more effectively and ensure to prevent discrimination in many areas of society.” The bill signing coincided with the opening of a new exhibit at Honolulu’s Bishop Museum. The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu, Tam said, is the only monument to gender fluidity in the world.

ACTIVISTS IN GHANA SUE OVER WRONGFUL ARREST
THOUSANDS MARCH AT BRAZIL’S LGBT PRIDE PARADE
To bring justice to the 21 activists who were wrongfully detained by the police last year, a coalition of LGBT groups in Ghana filed lawsuits against the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of Ghana. Their alleged offense was congregating during a workshop to advocate for the rights of LGBT individuals, according to the Human Rights Watch. The group, which also included the Coalition for SupportGH and the Queer Ghana Education Fund (QuGEF), brought the lawsuit before Ghana’s High Court in an effort to receive compensation for the hardship they faced while being held. Human Rights Watch found that during their lengthy detention — more than three weeks — they were denied bail, subjected to abuse, humiliation, and

Following two years of virtually organized festivities during the epidemic, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Sao Paolo for the annual LGBT Pride march. Voting with pride for policies that reflect us was the theme of the 26th event in the Brazilian city, which was conducted in advance of the presidential election in October. Jair Bolsonaro, the current far-right leader, was criticized by revelers who yelled and waved signs demanding that he step down from office. The left-wing rival Lula da Silva, who is now leading in the polls, will face off against the president, who has referred to himself as “proudly homophobic,” according to Metro. For the occasion, Sao Paolo was

Holding up signs and a uterus made from orange pool floats and donning activist tees, the group listened to elected officials and community organizers tell their abortion stories, share their frustration with the Florida legislature, and uplift one another to keep moving forward. “This isn’t the end and this sure as fuck isn’t the beginning,” said Emma Collum, the event’s organizer and the chairperson for Ruth’s List, a nonprofit that works to elect pro-choice women to office. “Half a century

of progress has been reversed in less than 24 hours.” Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said that the justices “turned women’s bodies into government property” and led the crowd in chants of “we will not go back.” Florida Sen. Mary Eakins, the South Florida field organizer for Equality Florida, recounted how she became pregnant at 15 after being raped by a family friend and saved her lunch money to get an abortion. Others in attendance included FL Sen. Tina Polsky, FL Rep. With the constitutional right to abortion overturned, 13 trigger states are immediately moving forward to outlaw abortion. Speakers repeatedly reminded the crowd that abortion is still legal in Florida. However, come July 1, a new bill that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed will make abortions after 15 weeks illegal. Some speakers predicted that Florida would restrict or even ban abortions altogether in the upcoming legislative session. FL Rep. Christina Hunschofsky told the crowd, “If you think that they’re not coming for you, you’re not paying attention. Remember how you felt today — they are banking on you forgetting.”.

It’s also an afterparty and several nights of pre-parties. The main event is Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. on Fort Lauderdale Beach down by 700 Seabreeze Boulevard. That’s when you’ll see a sea of inflatable pink flamingos, other floating birds, rainbow unicorns and more. The event encapsulates everything that nonFloridians think we do every day: go to the ocean, sip on a drink and ride waves while sitting on a big float. This year, celebrated designer Andrew Christian and his Trophy Boys are planning to show up and hang out while selling musthaves for any day at the beach, including beach balls, towels, and more. ABORTION DECISION CALLED ‘FULL SCALE ASSAULT’ ON RIGHTS Lisa Keen
I
n a ruling that one legal activist said will put LGBT rights “on the chopping block,” the U.S. Supreme Court on June 24 ruled 6 to 3 that the U.S. Constitution “does not prohibit” states from banning abortion.
A concurring opinion from Justice Clarence Thomas underscores that alarm for LGBT people. In it, Thomas urges the court to “reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.” Lawrence struck down state bans against same-sex sexual relations; Obergefell struck state bans against marriage for same-sex couples; and Griswold struck bans against couples using contraceptive. “As Justice Thomas’s concurrence makes clear, we must face the reality that the precedents that have transformed the place of LGBTQ people in our society are now in the crosshairs of this reactionary Court, which has no regard for precedent and no commitment to protecting civil liberties,” said Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “We are on notice that our rights are on the chopping block, and we should not waste a moment in mobilizing political support. If we cannot rely on the Supreme Court, we must turn to our local, state, and federal representatives to secure fundamental freedoms through legislation. We are witnessing a full-scale assault on the rights of women and LGBTQ people, and the moment to act is now.” The 6 to 3 decision came in Dobbs v. Jackson, a case in which an abortion clinic challenged a new law in Mississippi that banned abortion
ROE V. WADE, IN 1973, SAID THE CONSTITUTION IMPLIES THAT CITIZENS HAVE A RIGHT TO PRIVACY AND LIBERTY AND THAT THOSE RIGHTS COVER THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE AN ABORTION. 16

at any time after 15 weeks, unless there is a medical emergency or severe fetal abnormality. In language that is overtly dismissive of concern for how the decision will impact other rights, Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, said that these considerations are “too much” and lack “any serious discussion.” “These attempts to justify abortion through appeals to a broader right to autonomy and to define one’s ‘concept of existence’ prove too much,” wrote Alito, who was joined on the majority opinion by Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts did not sign onto Alito’s decision but issued his own opinion, concurring in the judgment. Alito does little to quell concern that the decision will impact these other rights. He said the majority has “stated unequivocally that nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion,” adding that abortion involves taking a “potential life,” while the decisions in the other cases do not. But then he adds this: “Each precedent is subject to its own stare decisis analysis, and the factors that our doctrine instructs us to consider like reliance and workability are different for these cases than for our abortion jurisprudence.” said Alito. Given that the Dobbs decision analysis of stare decisis (respect for precedent) overturns the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade decision, this reassurance falls empty. Obergefell v. Hodges, striking state bans on same-sex marriage, was issued only seven years ago. Lawrence v. Texas, striking state bans on consensual sex between same-sex adults, was issued only 19 years ago. Adding to that concern, Justice Thomas’ concurring opinion (see page 3) urges the court “reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents,” including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. He states that the court has “a duty to ‘correct the error’ established in those precedents…”

Generally, judges and justices are expected to keep pre-conceived ideas of how a case might be decided to themselves. But Justice Brett Kavanaugh appears to abandon that protocol, too. In his concurring opinion, he includes a footnote (page 8) that says Obergefell “overruled” Baker v. Nelson. “Much of American society was built around the traditional view of marriage that was upheld in Baker v. Nelson, and that was reflected in laws ranging from tax laws to estate laws to family laws.” In Obergefell v. Hodges, the Court nonetheless overruled Baker. “This is the most shockingly activist Court we have seen in any of our lifetimes,” said Jenny Pizer, senior legal counsel for Lambda Legal. “The arrogantly selective reading of history and disdain for generations of jurisprudence would be bizarre if it weren’t so terrifying.” The court did not “overrule” Baker v. Nelson. In Baker v. Nelson, a 1972 appeal, the Supreme Court did not issue an opinion. It summarily dismissed a gay couple’s appeal to recognize same-sex marriage. In the majority opinion June 24 in Dobbs, the court does overturn two major precedents: Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Roe v. Wade, in 1973, said the Constitution implies that citizens have a right to privacy and liberty
and that those rights cover the right to choose an abortion. Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in 1992, said states could regulate abortion once a fetus becomes viable as long as the regulations did not create an undue burden to women who seek an abortion. In his opinion concurring in the judgment of the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said he sees “no sound basis for questioning the adequacy” of 15 weeks for a woman to obtain an abortion. He chose not to sign onto Alito’s opinion apparently because, as he said, “its dramatic and consequential ruling is unnecessary to decide the case before us.” “The Court’s decision to overrule Roe and Casey is a serious jolt to the legal system — regardless of how you view those cases,” writes Roberts. “A narrower decision rejecting the misguided viability line would be markedly less unsettling, and nothing more is needed to decide this case.” “Seeing this carte blanche invitation to legislatures to eliminate the freedom to make one’s own decisions about one’s own body and life, especially following yesterday’s absurd decision elevating gun rights over public safety,” said Lambda’s Pizer, “offers a picture of American society potentially transformed in a horrifying direction.”

C
omedian and writer Bruce Vilanch isn’t quite sure what he’ll say when he takes the microphone on July 4 at LIT, the intimate gay club in Wilton Manors. “I’m not bringing the chorus girls, native maids of Burundi, mermaids in wheelchairs or bungee jumpers … none of the heavy lifting that usually comes with my shows,” said Vilanch in a phone call from his home in Hollywood. “I’m sure there will be funny stories, but you won’t be getting ‘fireworks’ on you unless you come into the back room after the show.” But Vilanch isn’t worried. He’s rarely speechless. The two-time Emmy winner and veteran writer is used to spewing out hilarious jokes on the fly. For more than a dozen years, he wrote the jokes for the Oscars and Emmys hosts and was the funny man in the revived “Hollywood Squares” game show. And, he knows his audience. He came to South Florida regularly as a young man to visit relatives in Boca Raton and completed a summer internship at the Miami Herald. “I wish I could stay longer, but I’m Jewish and July in Florida is a stretch to begin with,” he quipped. “January and February are when my people normally come to Florida.” He may actually be more concerned about the recent meningitis and monkey pox outbreaks in the state. “There are too many things to be afraid of,” he pointed out in his baritone voice. “Be brave, South Florida!” And of course, COVID-19 is still a risk, but Vilanch quickly pointed out that his first live appearance after the pandemic struck was earlier this spring at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival’s Savor Cinema downtown, “that strange little church that has been turned into a movie house.” That show was ironically titled,
“Superspreader.” “I’m sure I got COVID in Florida and then brought it back to California. I was boosted and vaxxed and waxed and everything,” he said. “You think you now have the magic shield … until they discover the next variant.” Like many creatives, Vilanch took advantage of the lockdowns to churn out new material — in his case, a new musical based on the music of gay icon Dolly Parton, developed in Sarasota and funded with a Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Plan grant. The show tells the story of a 40-something gay comedy writer who never really hit his stride and then escapes to his childhood home in the early days of the pandemic. “He then has a relationship with his imaginary friend Dolly Parton, who steps out of a poster. She does what Dolly does and gets him back on the street and on the road,” Vilanch explained. “It’s very funny.” Parton, a friend of Vilanch’s for nearly 50 years, wholeheartedly endorsed the project, and it’s set to open later this year in Wilmington, Delaware, “at the theater where the Bidens are subscribers,” he pointed out. Vilanch also divulged that a local producer has already reached out to him about a South Florida production next year. Now that the pandemic is largely behind us, Vilanch is happier, although he appreciated that pants were not required when making Zoom performances. He promised to wear pants this weekend in Wilton Manors — when pressed on the matter. “I have so many friends in Florida and if I didn’t have to go to Europe, I’d stay longer,” he concluded. “Of course, I have to test negative to get on that plane.” That could be a challenge for the positively funniest guy in Florida this weekend.
Bruce Vilanch will appear at LIT, 2440 Wilton Dr. in Wilton Manors on Monday, July 4 at 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 at Eventbrite.com/o/lit-wilton-47020514613.

rish professional rugby player for Leinster, Nick McCarthy, has come out as gay. McCarthy stated he thought about quitting the sport because he didn’t believe he could come out and play professional rugby, according to Outsports. He was enlightened to the genuine status of LGBT players’ acceptance in sports when he spoke with a few coaches last year. He stated he appreciated their support. “The support that I got from them straight away was unbelievable,” McCarthy said. “They helped and guided me over the months that followed so that I felt more comfortable to come out to the group.” McCarthy has been a professional rugby player since 2015. He previously played for Ireland at the national level. He is one of the most recent male professional athletes to come out to widespread acceptance.
