FLORIDA LGBTQ DEMS SEEK INSPIRATION AT SUMMER CONFERENCE John McDonald

F

lorida’s LGBTQ Democratic Caucus brings its summer conference to Fort Lauderdale next week to rally the base for the rapidly approaching midterm elections. Themed “Without You We Lose,” the conference takes place at the Westin in northern Fort Lauderdale off Cypress Creek Road, July 22-24. In a press release, Caucus President Stephen Gaskill said his organization is “ready to fight.” After the Supreme Court’s recent overturning of Roe v. Wade, coupled with the Florida legislature’s constant attacks on vulnerable communities, Gaskill said the conference is just what the doctor ordered. “We all need to be inspired, uplifted and motivated to vote for change,” Gaskill said.

Numerous elected officials and candidates are scheduled to attend, speak and participate in panel discussions at the conference. Florida Representative Michele Rayner will receive the Legislative Leadership Award. Rayner recently withdrew from her Saint Petersburg area congressional campaign to seek re-election in state House District 62. Interviewed prior to her withdrawal from the federal race, Rayner sounded the alarm against Republican tactics. “When people are focused on destroying our democracy that means you can no longer

have safe and affordable and attainable housing,” Rayner told SFGN in a Zoom interview in late April. “That means your child’s education is in peril, that means your healthcare is in peril … if we have no functioning working government, the things we expect from our country, the things we believe in, the American dream we all believe in is no longer available.” Rayner is slated to join a panel on “Building the Blue Bench” with Representative Marie Woodson, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Sabrina Javellana and Congressional District 10 candidate Maxwell Frost.

CYNTHIA ERIVO OPENS UP ABOUT BEING BISEXUAL

Oscar-nominated actress Cynthia Erivo has opened up about what her journey has been like since coming out as bisexual. In a recent cover story for British Vogue’s August 2022 issue, she revealed that it took her a while to publicly share her bisexuality with the world because so many LGBT people “feel the need to be constantly justifying why we deserve to be treated as equal beings, when really the only difference is that we love differently and we express ourselves differently.” Erivo first spoke about her sexuality in 2021 and self-identified as queer. “Rather than being chastised for that, we should be commended for being brave. That’s the most important thing: giving people the space to show up fully as who they are.”

EMMA CORRIN BECOMES FIRST NONBINARY PERSON TO COVER AMERICAN VOGUE

Vogue recently announced that nonbinary actor Emma Corrin as the cover star for the August edition of the fashion publication, making them the first nonbinary person to do so. Corrin is best known for playing Princess Diana on the Netflix series “The Crown” and also stars in the film “My Policeman,” which comes out later this year. During their interview, Corrin revealed that they’ve still gone on dates with both men and women. “My first date with a girl, they were like, ‘Oh! You’re a baby queer!’ It was amazing. We actually didn’t end up seeing each other again, but she really gave me the lowdown. I’m working out all this complex gender and sexuality stuff. And yet, I’m seeing a guy? That feels very juxtaposed, even if I’m very happy.” Corrin expressed their excitement of being a cover star via Instagram, writing,

KANSAS INCLUSIVE CHURCH DEALS WITH SECOND VANDALISM IN ONE WEEK The Kansas City United Church of Christ was vandalized for a second time this week when criminals painted “pervs” and “repentance” over a tribute for Pride month. The Kansas church has been outspoken about its allyship with the LGBT community in Brookside, KS. The tribute that was vandalized was of six doors, each painted a different color to represent the Pride flag, with the words “God’s doors are open to all.” “Our message of love is stronger than anyone’s message of hate,” the church’s secretary Emily Stott said to KCUR. “We really want everybody to know that no matter what happens, we’re always going

Because I think people are getting more violent as time goes on,” Stott said.

CALIFORNIA WINDWARD LIFE CARE RECEIVES SILVER-LEVEL CERTIFICATION FOR THIRD YEAR San Diego’s Windward Life Care has earned the silver-level certification from the SAGECare LGBT Competency Training program for the third year in a row. This is a welcome relief for seniors, as according to a study by AARP, a “vast majority (85%) of older LGBTQ individuals are concerned about discrimination based on sexual orientation.” “There’s been a couple of times when I’ve been in contact with Windward and I discussed with them about me being LGBTQ. I raised that issue maybe one or two times, but it was pretty much a nonissue for Windward,” Dane Adam told The San Diego Union-Tribune. Windward was first awarded in 2020 by having 40% of its employees complete an hour of LGBT aging training and 40% of

In most conversations regarding equal rights among LGBT communities, immigrant and people of color (POC), and what they experience in a southern red state, often go unheard. That’s changing in Tennessee. “A man had just been released from jail and I was on a bicycle and that person started following me, grabbed me by my hair and was dragging me,” Nicole Garcia Aguilar, a trans woman who left Honduras in 2014, told Tennessee Lookout. “Some neighbors intervened, and he said if it wasn’t for the neighbors, they would have found me with flies in my mouth, but for the next time, no one was going to intervene,” Garcia received asylum status in 2020 after being deported twice before. While looking for housing, apartment managers

were openly transphobic toward her. “They came to my apartment and threw everything outside,” she said. “I lost everything.” Now, Garcia works for the same company that helped her during that time, Worker’s Dignity. The company is an organization based in Nashville that advocates for lowwage workers. According to the Movement Advancement Project, since 2019, 3.5% of Tennessee adults identify as LGBT.

ITALIAN CHURCH PUBLICLY BLESSES GAY COUPLE

BANS ON SAME-SEX ACTS OVERRULED IN ANTIGUA

Last week, a homosexual couple received a public blessing from a Catholic church outside of Bologna with the approval of the Bologna archdiocese’s Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who is a strong contender for the next pope election. Pietro Morotti and Giacomo Spagnoli were married civilly in the province of Bologna. They then made their way from the town hall across the square to the Church of San Lorenzo for a special mass that was conducted by seven Catholic priests. “It was a blessing of two men just civilly united,” said Father Antonio Bai, pastor of the church of Budrio, according to Breitbart. “A blessing is not denied to anyone, right?” Father Gabriele Davalli, who has provided pastoral care for the couple as part of his LGBT outreach, was the main celebrant of the thanksgiving mass, which included

AFRICA ESWATINI CELEBRATES PRIDE MONTH Hundreds boldly gathered to celebrate Pride in the south African nation of Eswatini, despite the fact that they reside in a nation where their sexual orientations are illegal. Homosexuality has been prohibited in the Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, since the British annexed the nation in the 1870s. Since sodomy between two males is illegal under British common law, even though it makes no mention of women, this is seen as a general prohibition on samesex partnerships. Although police and courts have not enforced the ban in decades, the LGBT community claims they still “experience human rights abuses” on a daily basis, as they are concerned about job loss, family separation, and discrimination. According to Metro, local activists say that the majority of LGBT people in Eswatini still keep their identities a secret. One of the three

In Antigua and Barbuda, a bill that forbids consenting people from engaging in same-sex activities has been ruled unconstitutional. A LGBT man filed the lawsuit in coordination with two advocacy organizations. The bill violated constitutionally protected freedoms of expression, privacy protection, and liberty, the country’s Supreme Court found on July 5. In a nation where homophobia is pervasive, campaigners consider it to be a significant win. The verdict against the Sexual Offences Act of 1995 has been hailed by the Women Against Rape and the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality (ECADE).

on’t say “Don’t Say Gay.” As inane as it sounds, that is the latest right-wing attack on LGBT folks. In the middle of the fight is South Florida Sun Sentinel reporter Scott Travis. It began when he linked to a story about the “Don’t Say Gay” bill that just became law on July 1 but was already causing problems and confusion in Florida schools. Technically, the name of the law is Parental Rights in Education, but it has become known as “Don’t Say Gay” — much the same way as the Affordable Care Act is ubiquitously known as Obamacare. But this time, right wingers are having none of it. Travis’ Twitter account blew up with comments from conservatives, including one from Trump shadow advisor Stephen Miller that reads, “That’s not the name of the law.” Rather than ignore the comments section, Travis engaged, tweeting back: “That’s why it’s in quotes. But the name recognition for “don’t say gay” among the public is far higher than the bill’s actual name. It’s a good lesson in marketing/branding.” That’s all it took for the right to declare a “Gotcha!” moment. Miller responded, “The lie is good and journalists will use it, if it’s branded well. You know, this is a good lesson.” Travis shot back, “Not just journalists. The name stuck.” The law prohibits any discussion of sexual orientation in Florida classrooms in early

grades, and opponents began using the “Don’t Say Gay” moniker in stories as the bill was making its way through the legislature. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary, Christine Pushaw, also weighed in. She posted a screenshot of the Travis/Miller exchange with the caption, “Senior Journalist at @ SunSentinel.” Travis, who is openly gay, has been with the Sun Sentinel since 1999 and has been on the education beat for years. After the Parkland school shooting, he was part of the team that was given the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage. When asked for his reaction to how the story suddenly involved him, he told SFGN, “A lot of people have different views about this new law and how the media have covered it. It was interesting to see how that played out on social media.” Students who organized protests and were vocal on social media against “Don’t Say Gay” were shouted down and called names by Pushaw. As for the fate of the law, it is being challenged in court. It’s already being copied by other states, including a version in Tennessee that would ban all discussion of LGBT issues, history, or its existence, through and including high school.

BROWARD COUNTY GROUND ZERO FOR MONKEYPOX, GAY/BI MEN AT RISK Austen Erblat

SunServe Youth Life Coaching Counseling Support Groups Safe Space youth@sunserve.org (954) 764-5150

I

t’s been over a month since the first monkeypox case was diagnosed in Florida. Since that first case in Broward County, cases have risen to 105. Broward had 67 of those cases; the most of any county in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health. Miami-Dade had 18 cases; Orange and Pinellas counties each had five; Palm Beach County had four; Polk County had two; and Collier, Lake, Santa Rosa, and Seminole counties each had one. The LGBT community has concerns about the rise in monkeypox cases. Global health experts raised concerns back in May when cases began popping up in Europe and North America, because the virus is rarely reported outside of the African continent. The fatality rate sits around 10% and the risk of exposure is relatively low, since an infected person needs to be in close, prolonged face-to-face contact with someone else to transmit it. The recent flare up in cases is suspected to stem from a same-sex couple who contracted the virus in Nigeria and spread it at two parties in Spain and Belgium earlier this year, Dr. David Heymann, who formerly headed the World Health Organization’s emergency department, told the Associated Press. “We know monkeypox can spread when there is close contact with the lesions of someone who is infected, and it looks like sexual contact has now amplified that

transmission,” Heymann said back in May. Michael Rajner, an activist from Wilton Manors, said he hasn’t been going out as much as he did prior to COVID-19, but said he is worried for his friends and neighbors. “I think for the LGBTQ community, I’m incredibly concerned over this,” he said. “We’re a very sex-positive community and reading where they’re seeing a prevalence of incidents, it is worrisome that it’s largely affecting gay men at this moment, although not restricted to that population.” Those concerns appear to be reflected in a vaccine drive being hosted this week by the Florida Department of Health in partnership with the Pride Center in Wilton Manors. The event will stretch from July 12 to July 16, but appointments filled up early. All the cases in South Florida, aside from one, were among gay or bi men. Dr. John Brooks of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said clusters of patients are popping up around the world, and seem to be disproportionately affecting gay and bisexual men. Experts recommend inspecting your sexual partner for signs of a rash, including places that aren’t easily visible, like the genital area and rectum. Monkeypox can be found in semen, so condoms are recommended.

If you suspect you have been infected with monkeypox, contact your doctor immediately or call the Florida Department of Health at 954-467-4700 or 850-245-4444.

TEEN ARRESTED DURING PRO-CHOICE PROTEST FOR NOISE VIOLATION Christiana Lilly

W

rapped in a bisexual pride flag, a 13-year-old was arrested in Lakeland during a pro-choice protest on July 4. Police say that Lillie “Rain” Johnson was arrested and detained for two hours because she broke the city’s noise ordinance for using a megaphone during the protest. “We had people share their stories about how overturning Roe v. Wade affected them and how they feel that the decision is wrong,” Lauren Johnson, Lillie’s mother, shared in a TikTok video. “They were standing up and using microphones.” The two attended the protest at Munn Park and the arrest went viral when Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who is running for governor, shared a video of the incident on Twitter, with Johnson’s permission. In the video, Lillie’s mother can be heard saying, “Just don’t resist, it’s okay, I got you, mom’s right behind you.” In a video posted on TikTok, Lillie is seen in tears as she signs paperwork with police and is given her court date. Even so, she went back to the park to continue the protest, where fellow protesters chanted “Justice for Lillie.” Johnson says she was not allowed to accompany her child during questioning. “I have the right to protest for my body,” Lillie told News Channel 8. “Because I’m underage I cannot vote, but those who can vote we can persuade and I want to fight for anyone who has a uterus.” David Haas, an Orlando attorney who is representing Lillie, said that usually juveniles are interviewed with their parents, especially if they’re being read their Miranda rights. As for the charge, her citation points to Sec. 47-70, which concerns “noise disturbances” including “amplifying the human voice in such a manner or with such volume as to annoy or disturb the quiet.” Lillie could face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine, Haas said. “I think it’s obviously a bit excessive,” the attorney said of the arrest. Haas is awaiting paperwork on the case from the Lakeland Police Department to review. Lillie is scheduled to appear in court in August. “Since the recent U.S. Supreme Court

ruling, we’ve had hundreds of people peacefully assemble across our City with few isolated incidents,” the Lakeland Police Department said in a statement. “Officers are in attendance to assure a safe and secure environment for those exercising their rights while doing so in accordance with Florida state statutes and city ordinances.” “Lillie ‘Rain’ Johnson’s wrongful arrest is just another example of fascism taking hold of Florida under Ron DeSantis,” Fried said in a statement to SFGN. “Rain is an inspiration, and gives me hope that the next generation of young women will refuse to accept this type of injustice we’ve seen coming out of the Supreme Court and Florida’s wannabe dictator. I stand with Rain, and women all across the country, as we continue to fight for our reproductive freedom.” Both celebrations and protests erupted around the country after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade on June 24. South Florida saw its own protests, including one in Fort Lauderdale led by Ruth’s List. The court’s decision led to a number of trigger states banning abortions. Florida was on track to limit abortions to 15 weeks in July, but a judge deemed it to be unconstitutional because of the Sunshine State’s privacy laws. The state is appealing the decision.

haven’t done our homework. For some people, transgender people are “freaks.” Ignorance is the parent of fear. Fear is the parent of hatred. We hear, “I get that some people need to change their body to match their soul, but I don’t get any of the rest of it, and I’m concerned that children are being negatively impacted.” We haven’t properly prepared people on transgender issues, nor have we kept pace with all of the developments represented by the acronym LGBTQQIANB. I’m not excusing the Republican legislators who are using the transgender issue to rile up their voting base. It’s calculated and orchestrated, and it sadly takes advantage of young people who don’t identify with the sex assigned to them at birth. I’m explaining why they get away with it. Their poorly sexuality-educated constituents are easy picking for outrage, money, and votes. We thought that simply by adding more letters to our powerful, successful train, the issues would be understood and accepted by

everyone. That foolish thinking is what made it easy for Republicans to rattle the nerves of the uninformed. The battle for humane treatment for every person represented by our acronym is far from over. We just got some cold water thrown in our faces by people who feel that their way of being in the world is changing against their will, and they’ve had enough. So, they’re passing bill after bill targeting transgender youth. “We may not be able to do anything about gay marriage, but we sure can stop children from being confused about sexuality and gender. We just won’t talk about it. And we’ll shield them from anyone who tries.” Given the press coverage on transgender youth, we have a great opportunity now to explain to the average American all of the permutations of gender identity and gender expression. Some people are understandably confused. We need to respond to them with as much patience, love, clarity, and conviction as we did when we told our stories about being gay.

“Love without judgement”

A home for your spirit.

Mark S. King he photo on Brian Thomas’ Instagram page was a typically sunny one for the social media personality, who has built a rising presence as a sex-positive gay nurse living with HIV. “Farewell Wilton Manors!” it read, alongside a photo of him grinning shirtless among the palm trees in the predominantly queer south Florida town. “What an amazing trip! Can’t wait to come back!” It was the final post of his vacation, a busy week of sunning at the pool and hitting the nude beach and enjoying all the pleasures that Wilton Manors nightlife can provide. A few days after returning home to Baltimore, the blisters appeared. Brian was about to get an education in living with a new viral threat, joining a growing number of people worldwide who have been diagnosed with monkeypox, a sometimesdebilitating infection that causes fever, abdominal cramps, and painful blisters that can scar the body. It is also highly infectious. Within hours of his diagnosis, Brian took to his social media pages and revealed what he was going through. He was typically transparent, posting video testimonials that haven’t shied away from intimate details. He has discussed each symptom as they occurred, which gay sex venue might have exposed him to the virus, and the lesions inside his rectum that have caused him a great deal of pain. His posts throughout his two weeks of monkeypox isolation have been informative, dishy, sexually candid, and incredibly important if we are to raise the level of alarm about this latest viral passenger within the LGBT community. (No, monkeypox isn’t a gay disease, but it has taken up early residence among us, following our social and sexual habits and interactions. It’s only a matter of time before it finds safe passage within other demographics.) Brian isn’t the first guy to step forward and discuss a monkeypox diagnosis. Benjamin Ryan recently posted his NBC News video story featuring several gay men discussing

their experiences with the virus du jour. There’s an anonymous Twitter handle, @ MyMonkeyPoxLife, giving a blow-by-blow of his ongoing experience with symptoms. Activist Leo Herrera has posted podcasts drawing a direct line between checking for monkeypox blisters and the trauma of early AIDS experienced by gay men of a certain age. The CDC has released information and guidance about monkeypox that is refreshingly direct for the usually overly cautious agency. And POZ Magazine science editor Liz Highleyman has been posting stories with news, helpful guidance, and policy concerns for weeks. We need as many stories as possible to help basic information about monkeypox sink in, especially if we’re talking about a virus that could become a new, endemic disease that everyone will be dodging for the rest of our lives. I interviewed Brian for My Fabulous Disease because his posts are the first real-time video reports I’ve seen from the front lines of monkeypox. He has walked us through his physical ailments, his treatment, and the frustration and second guessing that happens when you’re stuck in isolation for two weeks with an infection soaked in sexual shame and homophobia. It looks like monkeypox is swiftly moving from a tangential concern to a front-andcenter health threat that we need to take seriously, and right now.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Rick Karlin

o paraphrase Dorothy from the “Wizard of Oz,” “Places seem to come and go so quickly here.” Two new dining spots recently opened that have replaced short-lived eateries. Both venues have proven track records with previous thriving locations. That’s good news as each place appears to be off to a good start.

SMILE EMPANADAS 2041 WILTON DR., WILTON MANORS 786-567-0004 SMILEEMPANADAS.COM We stopped in at Smile Empanadas just a day or two after it opened its doors, and we were reminded why we love living in the “Gayberry” we call Wilton Manors. First of all, everyone is so friendly; the server at the counter couldn’t have been more perky or helpful. Secondly, while we were sitting enjoying our lunch, in walks the First Lady of Wilton Manors, Arnie Cuarenta. He was going to have lunch to go but ended up sitting across from us as we caught up with each other. We were barely into our lunch and conversation, when in walked Carl Shearer, one of the organizers of Taste of the Island. He joined in our conversation while his order was being prepared. In the middle of all the neighborliness, Axel, one of the owners of the establishment, stopped in and we all introduced ourselves. As wonderful as the company was, this column is about the food. I was skeptical that an empanada place was opening where an empanada place couldn’t make a go of it. I can see why the folks from Smile decided to move forward. Their empanadas are so much better than the ones from the previous business. They are light and flaky and stuffed with plenty of filling. They have combo deals that include three empanadas and a soft drink for $9.99, and a hearty lunch package of two for $16.99. There are also family sized and party packs. For more information on combos, go to smileempanadas.com/combos. Smile is the dream of Axel, an Argentine entrepreneur, who wanted to meld the traditional flavors of the Argentine empanadas with American taste. In addition to traditional Argentine fillings such as spicy creamed corn,

savory mushrooms, and guava and cheese, you can get fillings inspired by American fare, such as cheeseburgers, BBQ pulled pork or chicken, creamy cheesy spinach, a Margherita pizza, or a vegetarian Impossible filling. BTW, Alex is very easy on the eyes and if he wants to increase business, he should be behind the counter every day. (I said the column was about the food, but I didn’t say it was just about the food.) Give Smile Empanadas a chance. You will be pleasantly surprised.

BATCH NEW SOUTHERN KITCHEN & TAP 525 N. FEDERAL HWY., FORT LAUDERDALE 754-757-0000 BATCHSOUTHERNKITCHEN.COM/FTL Batch New Southern Kitchen & Tap is a casual spot highlighting southern cuisine and craft cocktails. It’s taken over the space formerly occupied by Mellow Mushroom. This is another place coming to us with some experience. Batch’s Palm Beach location has been around almost 10 years, and they’ve put together a menu that is focused on fresh local products, sustainable crops, and fairtrade ingredients. They are also experienced at catering to special diets, so don’t be afraid to ask your servers for vegan and glutenfree options. The drinks menu focuses on craft American-made spirits, new-world wines, and Florida micro-brewed beers. One hundred percent of their bitters, tinctures, and syrups are made in house. We discovered that Batch has some serious happy hour specials. From 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, on the patio and indoor bar area, all drinks that would normally be priced up to $13 are only five bucks! And there are a bunch of food specials for $6 (although sometimes the portion sizes are smaller): wings are a buck each and Florida oysters (raw or roasted) are $2.

BBQ Jackfruit “Pulled Pork” from Batch. Image via Facebook. Since we were there just in time to catch the tail end of happy hour, we started with a bunch of the app specials. We thoroughly enjoyed the house-made bacon tater-tots, which offered Flintstoned-sized bites of crunchy, greasy, deliciousness. Nashville hot chicken presented a trio of sliders topped with a sizeable piece of fried chicken but could have used more sauce. The deviled eggs were creamy with just a touch of brininess and went down easily. We didn’t try the wings, but they are available with Nashville hot and sweet, root beer BBQ, ranch, or Carolina mustard sauces. My vegetarian husband was thrilled with the number of plant-based choices. He raved about the red bean and lentil chili, which tasted pretty “meaty” even without the addition of Impossible meat. It came topped with Fritos, which took us right back to childhood. It’s a large portion, and it should be; its $14.50, and another $6 for the Impossible meat. Other veggie options include BBQ jackfruit “pulled pork,” an Impossible burger, and veggie pot pie. Carnivores will not feel neglected; there are plenty of hearty options for the meat eater

and some salads for those dining lighter. Chicken pot pie features pulled chicken in a light gravy with plenty of garden veggies, all topped by a giant biscuit that could feed a small family. The filling was a bit heavy handed on the salt, but it was otherwise delicious. Roz was gob-smacked by her Cajun Campanelle, a serving bowl of pasta with blackened chicken, roasted mushrooms, peas, and scallions in a creamy smoked gouda sauce. Loren wasn’t as thrilled with his jambalaya. It was chock full of smoked sausage, shrimp, roasted chicken, bell pepper, green chiles, and tomatoes, tossed with rice, but to be fair, he’d never had jambalaya before, so he didn’t know what to expect. It looked yummy to me. Between the large portions and all the apps, we weren’t even tempted by desserts. And when I pass on chocolate pecan pie, you know I’m full. Service was friendly but could have been more attentive. And, of course, one of my pet peeves: the dishes were brought to the table by someone other than our server and “auctioned off” (as in holding up a dish and asking “Who had the…?”).

THEATER EXPLORES LIVES OF BLACK GAY MEN LIVING WITH HIV J.W. Arnold

I

sland City Stage in Wilton Manors will offer a theatrical portrait of what it means to be Black and gay in America in its latest production, “One in Two” by Donja R. Love, Aug. 4 to Sept. 4. Directed by the co-founder of Moxie Theatre in San Diego and NAACP theatre awardwinner Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, “One in Two” refers to the sobering statistic that one in two Black men who have sex with men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetimes, according to a 2016 analysis by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As an added twist in this production, the audience chooses nightly which actor sitting in an ethereal clinic waiting room must portray the ill-fated lead character who will be diagnosed with HIV. The cast includes Kevane Coleman, Randall Swinton and Nathaniel J. Ryan. “When I first discovered ‘One in Two’ during its Off-Broadway run, just prior to COVID, I knew it was a story we needed to tell,” said Andy Rogow, artistic director of Island City Stage. “We’re looking forward to sharing this story that is not often heard in our community — how HIV-positive vulnerable men are treated by the LGBT+ and Black communities. We hope theatre-goers will come away with a deeper understanding of this epidemic and be

motivated to make a difference to help end this very real stigma and disease.” On Monday, July 25 at 6 p.m., HIV activist, filmmaker and author Jesse Brooks (“Busting Stigma”) will address the intertwined social issues of being African American, gay and HIV-positive during “Black Men Speak: The Impact of HIV on the Black Community,” Island City Stage’s last Behind the Red Curtain public forum the season. The event will be held at ArtServe, 1350 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, and is free. Brooks is currently co-chair of the Bay Area State of Emergency Coalition (BASE), advocacy coordinator of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation of Northern California, and cochair of UCSF/CAPS Research Community Advisory Board, and a weekly columnist for the largest African American paper in the Bay area. Brooks co-wrote and starred in the documentary “The Ceremony” and was involved in a PBS production, “The End Game: HIV/AIDS in Black America.” The panel discussion will also include Lorenzo Robertson, founder of Ujima Men’s Collective; Ederick Johnson, HIV specialist with the Florida Department of Health; and Justin Jones, CEO of the Rapha Center. The forum will be moderated by World AIDS Museum and Educational Center Executive Director Terry Dyer.

“Black Men Speak: The Impact of HIV on the Black Community” will be held on Monday, July 25 at 6 p.m. at ArtServe, 1350 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. Island City Stage, 2304 N. Dixie Hwy. in Wilton Manors, presents Donja R. Love’s “One in Two,” Aug. 4 to Sept. 4. Tickets are $35 at IslandCityStage.org.
