The law is being challenged in court, but for the start of the school year, it’s a fact of life in Florida schools. One goal of the event is to help parents and students know what to expect in an era of enforcing “Don’t Say Gay.” They will also discuss the harmful effects the law could inflict on LGBT youth. “We hope that both youth and parents leave our event feeling stronger and knowing that SunServe and our Youth and Family division are here to support them in the absence of protections in schools,” Lima said. There will also be refreshments and a backpack giveaway, the things that parents and students are used to focusing on this time of Theyear.event is Wednesday, August 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Center for Spiritual Living, located at 4849 N. Students, teachers, and parents are facing new challenges in the new school year. Last semester was dominated by “Don’t Say Gay’s” passionate debate and passage. This semester it becomes a reality and a burden on LGBT students and their allies. Despite only being purported to affect discussing sexuality in lower grades, many school systems are either being overly cautious or overzealous toadies, banning books, Pride flags, rainbow icons, and other LGBT-friendly material across all grades and schools. One county pulled books and shipped them to the Pride Center in Fort Lauderdale. In another, some books come with “warning labels.” The law was officially called Parental Rights In Education, but what are the rights of pro-LGBT parents, students, and teachers?

This show will be centered around her sexual journey and answer common questions and work to put a stop to stigmas regarding the LGBT community. “As someone who struggled for years to understand my sexual identity, I am so excited to be making a series that could change the views of so many people through honest and personal conversations,” Delevingne said in a statement. “I can only imagine what having a series like this would have meant to the 14-year-old me who struggled to understand feelings that were seen as non-conventional or different. GOVERNOR UNDER FIRE FOR ASKING TEACHERS TO OUT LGBT STUDENTS TO THEIR PARENTS

Jimmy “Jay” Lee was a Black student at Ole Miss known for his LGBT advocacy in Lafayette County. Mississippi Today reported the fears surrounding Lee’s death. The suspect in custody, Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., a 22-year-old Ole Miss graduate, has been charged with the murder of Lee. “Based on the information collected to date, our investigators believe this crime represents an isolated incident stemming from the relationship between Jay Lee and Tim Herrington,” the Oxford Police Department said in a statement.

The police continued to emphasize that the incident was not a hate crime although students think it was because Lee was fighting for LGBT representation, and they fear that other queer students will be targeted next. “At the time and because of the unknown of why this has happened to Jay and the whereabouts of his body, I have decided that I cannot physically come back to Oxford,” Lindsey Trinh, a journalism student, wrote in an email to the university provost and professors. “I fear for my safety and well-being as an outspoken and proud gay person of color.”

Currently, the Virginia Board of Education has policies in place to protect students’ privacy. Gov. Ted Youngkin, however, feels that teachers should notify parents if the child is LGBT. “I’m a teacher. I would never out a kid. Ever. My job is to help them thrive,” Del. Schuyler VanValkenburg, a Henrico County Democrat, wrote on Twitter according to The Roanoke Times

In the interview, Youngkin goes on to say that the reason he feels this way is because “parents matter.”

The LGBT community in Spain is actively battling the monkeypox virus by refraining from sexual activity, avoiding nightclubs, limiting the number of partners they have, and pushing for the rapid availability of vaccines. A 35-yearold Madrid resident named Antonio said, “With this monkey thing, I prefer to be careful ... I don’t have sex anymore, I don’t go to parties anymore, and that’s until I’m vaccinated and have some immunity,” according to WIO Antonio, who often frequented nightclubs and occasionally sex parties, decided to take action as the number of incidences increased. Spain has announced the second fatality linked to monkeypox. Brazil saw the only other such fatality outside of Africa. According to the World Health Organization, more than 18,000 cases have been found globally since the beginning of May outside of Africa. One of the countries most severely affected is Spain. According to the emergency and alert coordination center for the country’s health ministry, 4,298 people were infected.

CUBA HOLDING REFERENDUM ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Photo by Mick De Paola, via Unsplash.

On Sept. 25, Cuba will hold a vote on whether to approve a new Family Code, a decision that might allow same-sex couples to get married and have children. The update, which aims to guarantee more rights for women and children, was accepted by the national legislature of the communist state. The referendum will take place one week before the scheduled date, and it will require more than 50% of votes to Accordingpass. to The Washington Post, the new legislation will also legalize surrogacy and the recognition of parents who are not biological mothers and fathers in addition to same-sex marriage. People gathered at the park in the capital’s Engativá neighborhood holding posters that read, “Kisses are signals of affection, not a crime.” “It is the result of a lot of work and, in particular, the contribution of our people,” Cuban Justice Minister Oscar Silvera Martínez tweeted, urging Cubans to vote in support of the changes. Vietnam has advised its physicians that homosexuality is not a sickness and has urged them to stop discriminating against the LGBT population. Gay, bisexual, and trans individuals have long felt excluded in this southeast Asian nation, and the declaration, according to activists, represents a significant advancement for LGBT rights.

Photo by Jernej Furman, via Flickr.

The health ministry stated that “homosexuality cannot be ‘cured’, does not need ‘to be cured’ and cannot be changed,” according to CBS News

Following stories of doctors saying they could treat gender minorities, it advised medical practitioners to be respectful of gender and sexual orientation. “Do not consider homosexuality, bisexuality or being trans a disease,” it said. Although compared to some other Asian nations, Vietnam is considered as being more progressive on LGBT issues, there is still a lot of ignorance regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

Wilton Collective focuses on creating a diverse and accepting space. In the back of the building is a permanent vendor — Carvelle Bikes, run by Carvelle Estriplet. “I heard through a mutual friend that Julian was opening a space where they can have different vendors, different people, and they specifically wanted people of the LGBT,” Estriplet said. “Who better than a black trans woman who loves bikes?” Estriplet credits Wilton Collective for the growth of her business. Having a spot in Wilton Collective has increased her popularity so much that she is now opening a second location for Carvelle Bikes. “This is the dream,” Estriplet said. “If you told myself three years ago, I was gonna own a bike shop, I wouldn’t believe myself.” Estriplet calls the experience “exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time” but mentioned that Carvelle Bikes will always have a home in Wilton Collective, even as it expands.“Ithink this is a great space not only for, you know, selling my art but also for connecting with people and doing something good for the community,” Potter said.

Part of what makes the job “perfect” is the diversity in the store; Sheffield said their coworkers come from “completely different backgrounds.”“Havingaplace like this, where you can come to work and you can just be who you are with no reservations about that,” Sheffield said. “It’s something I don’t think a lot of us expected.”This welcoming atmosphere is exactly what Cavazos imagined when he first started the work-study program. He based it on a program in Louisville, Kentucky, for senior citizens and adapted it for LGBT teens. The Louisville program that helped him plan the work program was a thrift shop like Cavazos’ first workstudy program, Julian’s Fountain of Treasures, also on Wilton Drive.  “I call it the collective because it’s a collective of individuals that make this all happen and look the way it does,” Cavazos explained. “If we are ever in need of something, whatever that looks like, all I have to do is go on social media and ask, and it’s here.”

Julian Cavazos often found himself staring at a large building he loved, entranced. First it was a Mexican restaurant in the ‘90s, then Boomerangs, and now, finally, he can call it his own: Wilton Collective, a work-study program part of his nonprofit Julian’s Fountain of Youth.Cavazos said he “always knew” he wanted to build a work-study program for LGBT teens. “They get to see themselves within the workspace, from the top all the way down,” he said. “That to me was very, very important.” Wilton Collective employs LGBT teens to train them for the workforce in a welcoming environment. It’s part learning about business and part learning about themselves.  “I would say the biggest way it’s changed my perception is it made it so that I can understand what it’s really like to have a passion to work somewhere,” Gage Sheffield, a student in the manager-in-training program, said. On their first day of work, Sheffield strapped on a backpack vacuum cleaner to help dust off a chandelier before putting it together for the shop. They said they “didn’t know what to expect.”  As someone who was promoted to youth manager in November and then the manager-in-training in June, Sheffield embraces the Wilton Collective. “It’s kind of like the perfect first job,” they said. By Bella Ramirez

rehabilitation, Cavazos started working on his idea for a nonprofit centered on LGBT empowerment through workstudy and courses. The project took off quickly with immediate support. “They could tell how committed I was to this,” he said. “So they were like, ‘If you’re in I’mNow,in.’”

The night will start off with the latest installment of Myrna’s saga, a telenovela based on “Myrna,” a long-suffering but hopelessly awesome character, whose life is chronicled annually at the Reverse Quinceañera. This year’s chapter is titled Myrna’s Family Values. Cavazos said things have been difficult since we last saw the diva.“Myrna’s breaking out on her own. It’s been a really tough year with the loss of Oscar. A lot is coming out about what happened before ‘the incident.’ I don’t wanna give away too much.” What we can give away is that Myrna has a new enemy, South Florida legend Kitty Meow. This time, Myrna may have met her“Thematch.house of Myrna is so ghetto,” Kitty Meow said. “She’s out of her league. They can’t compete with the Temple of Kitty Meow.” How will it turn out? You can catch up on Myrna’s saga at JFOY.org The event benefits JFOY, which works with local LGBT youth. The kids are given support in facing the extra challenges that can come with coming out at a young age. Among other things, JFOY runs a summer camp, as well as Wilton Collective, which is primarily staffed by JFOY kids. Tables for the event are sold out, but some standing room tickets may still be available. Visit JFOY.org for more information.

JFOY’s work-study programs work with volunteers and hire LGBT teens to teach them how to work in an environment that accepts them no matter their background.“Insomecases, it might be the first type of job that a youth has had to get them used to the workforce and to develop their work ethics that they probably developed as they’ve grown as a teenager,” Kyle Turner, Wilton Collective Volunteer and Board Member of JFOY, said. Ultimately, JFOY is about being seen. “I get very emotional when I’m talking about this, because that’s what this is all about,” Cavazos said. “When a kid feels they’re in a situation where nobody is like them, or nobody understands, or nobody cares about them, I want them to know there are lots of us out here.” By Bella Ramirez

The glitz! The rivalries! The drama! Finishing touches are being put on the party of the year: the annual Reverse Quinceañera by Julian’s Fountain of Youth (JFOY). The event’s eleventh edition will go down Saturday, August 27, at The Venue in Wilton Manors.Andthis year, it’s getting a makeover. “We have completely changed the format of the show,” JFOY Founder Julian Cavazos told SFGN. “In the past we’ve had competing damas for Miss Reverse Quinceañera. To change it up and go into a new look, we’re having houses compete at the Posing For A Purpose Ball.” Five houses will be competing: The House of WAM (World AIDS Museum), The House of Flock (FlockFest), The House of Pub, The House of Imperial Sun Court, and The House of Royal Peacock. The winners will get $5,000 to donate to the nonprofit of their choice.

A GRAND OPENING

Cavazos knew, after taking experiential learning courses, that he wanted to create a program that taught LGBT students in an experiential way. He promised himself he would get to this passion project at some point, “before you know it, it’s been five years.”Cavazos came to the realization that he still hadn’t realized his dream while hospitalized with open heart surgery.

Julian Cavazos, president and founder of nonprofit Julian’s Fountain of Youth (JFOY), thought the organization would take at least two years to come to fruition. Less than half a year after he began working on it, he already had keys to their first location.

Julian’s Fountain of Youth has two work-study programs — the Wilton Collective and Julian’s Fountain of Treasure — and various events to help LGBT youth feel seen. Cavazos’ work takes up all seven days of the week, but every morning he makes time to respond to anxious parents’ emails and thoughtful thank you’s in his inbox.“Ijust got an email about midnight last night, from a mother, whose trans son is depressed, has anxiety, and doesn’t have any friends — I get these often,” Cavazos said. “I get to work with her and make sure that her son comes here or comes to one of our programs, so that he can look out and see that he’s not alone.”

By Christiana Lilly SEARCHING FOR DRIVER IN HIT-AND-RUN OF TODDLER IN OAKLAND PARK Screenshot courtesy of Broward Sheriff’s Office. Lots of talk about climate change since the experts tell us that if we don’t drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, life as we know it will change. Rising sea levels will result in coastal areas being permanently flooded, rising temperatures will result in more extreme weather patterns. Of course, by now, none of this is news to anyone who has lived in coastal South Florida over the last decade and personally experienced changes. The City has been working to identify ways to reduce GHG emissions, and to encourage businesses and residents to do the same. The first step is to realize that our energy and water resources are finite and will not last forever unless we change our ways. The second is to think about conserving, reusing and recycling. Small changes can add up, and here are some ideas:Ifyou still have a vehicle that uses traditional fossil fuels, commit to reducing your time in your car. One great strategy is the city’s new, all-electric Circuit shuttle, an on-demand $2 ride from anywhere in the city to anywhere in the city. Next time you head out for dinner on the Drive, leave your car at home! Download the Ride Circuit app and get started. If you’re coming from outside the city, take advantage of one of the city-sponsored $5 rideshare discount codes, which you can find at https://bit.ly/ WiltonUberRides.Ofcourse, assomeone whose primary mode of transport is not a car scooter, I would be remiss not to mention either bicycle or electric as increasingly popular transportation choices in our ever-more walkable city. I encourage you to join me in accepting our city’s “Challenge One Out of Seven” and consider leaving your car at home at least one day a week and bicycling around town. Our city has approximately 40 bike racks for you to safely secure your bike. For more information about bicycling, bike rack locations, and the challenge, visit https://bit. ly/bikewilton.Investigate solar energy. In some cases, solar panels can reduce (or eliminate) your electric bill and have the added benefit of reducing dependency on fossil fuel energy. In Broward County, there is a Solar Co-Op called Solar United Neighbors, which provides a group rate from a single installer. For more information, go to solarunitedneighbors. org/Broward. I personally switched to solar using Wilton Manors-based ProSolar about 8 months ago, and my only complaint is that I wish I had done it sooner. I am saving money and the environment. Be sure you are recycling properly. Contamination of the recycling bin with nonrecyclable items costs money and effort. Please don’t put plastic bags of any sort in your recycling bin. For more information, check out the city’s recycling page. Reduce your water usage. Install an ultralow flow toilet and receive a rebate. Police are asking for the public’s help to find a driver who hit a 2-year-old child in Oakland Park, then drove off. Around 6 p.m. on Aug. 11, a driver in a burgundy vehicle hit the child at the intersection of Northwest 43rd Street and Northwest Fifth Avenue, a residential neighborhood in Oakland Park. In a video shared by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the driver left the scene after the accident. Thankfully, the toddler was taken to a nearby hospital and their injuries are considered not life-threatening. Just last month, 10-year-old La’Ziyah Stukes died from a hit-and-run in Wilton Manors that occurred in December 2021. She and her cousins were walking on the sidewalk when a man tried to cut in front of a bus, lost control of his vehicle, and drove into the six children. He fled the scene but was arrested the next day. Two of the children died on the scene. If you know the driver in the Oakland Park hit-and-run or have information to share, contact Oakland Park Det. Shelby Campbell at 954-202-3131 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App. To remain anonymous, contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493TIPS (8477), browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477).

Darling was then able to convince the man to leave the bar with him; once outside, he tackled him to the ground until police arrived.Ina post on Facebook, WMPD shared that the man was “intoxicated and in need of mental health services,” and that he was upset over the recent deaths of close friends. Police determined that the grenade was inert and that he did not have any firearms with him. The bar was searched, deemed safe, and patrons were allowed to return. On Facebook, the owners of Corner Pub thanked Darling and Shakespeare for their help.“Remember guys see something say something this is our community and let’s keep it safe,” they wrote. “Let’s not let this stop us!”

FLORIDA HEALTH DEPARTMENT REVERSES COURSE

With national guidance in flux, it appears the Florida Department of Health is trying to keep up, causing some confusion to those seeking a monkeypox vaccination. SFGN confirmed Tuesday FDOH would stop giving a second dose of the monkeypox vaccine. On Thursday they reversed that decision. This latest decision comes after the White House issued an Emergency Use Authorization, which allows for an alternative dosing regimen for the monkeypox vaccine. Currently the vaccine is injected into the fatty tissue under the skin, but with this new approach it would be injected into the top layer of the skin. One major downside to this approach is that it’s essentially a real-time experiment and has never been done before with this vaccine. Another potential issue is it could leave a scar. But this also means a lot less of the vaccine needs to be administered allowing one dose to be split into five, allowing the current stockpile of vaccines to have a much greater impact. “With the issuance of an Emergency Use Authorization for intradermal injection of the smallpox/monkeypox-JYNNEOS vaccine, the Department is moving forward with second doses,” said Nina Levine, the Public Information Officer for the Florida Department of Health Broward County. “All appointments that were canceled have been rescheduled. DOH-Broward will continue to provide monkeypox vaccination for

Jason Parsley STATE individuals who are likely to have recently been exposed to monkeypox, through our vaccination sites, sites operated with community partners and healthcare provider partners.”AsofAug.

12, there are 1,053 cases in Florida.Tobe fully effective the Jynneos vaccine requires two shots. According to one limited study the Jynneos vaccine is 83% effective after 28 days in HIVnegative individuals and 67% effective in HIV-positive individuals. With two shots it’s 98 and 96% effective. Before the new Emergency Use Authorization was announced, other locations had stopped giving out second doses including D.C., New York City, Canada and the U.K., in order to spread out their vaccines to more people.

A&E ARTS

LESBIAN THESPIANS CONTINUE TO GROW, MOVE TO NEW HOME

It’s been a whirlwind year for Carol Wartenberg and the Lesbian Thespians. The informal group of women actors, musicians, artists and art lovers founded during the COVID-19 pandemic experienced rapid growth as it tapped into the region’s largely unnoticed lesbian community. And just this summer, the group claimed a new home as theater company-in-residence at ArtServe in FortTheLauderdale.groupgot its start under the auspices of the newly formed nonprofit Plays of Wilton (POW!), founded by independent theater producer Ronnie Larsen at the intimate Foundry theater space in Wilton Manors. Wartenberg and a core group of women artists who had always felt marginalized within the male-dominated LGBT community began hosting monthly mixers and soon added play readings, spoken word events and concerts. The events proved popular and the group quickly outgrew the Foundry. But, with the pandemic subsiding and other theater companies and arts organizations returning to regular schedules, the availability of venues was“Thelimited.past year has been difficult because theaters have gotten back into business and finding appropriate spaces to rehearse and perform has been a challenge,” explained Wartenberg, a retired clinical psychologist who always had an affinity for acting and theater. “We’re so grateful to Ronnie and POW! because they really gave us our start.” When the opportunity to call ArtServe home was presented, Wartenberg jumped. The Broward County arts incubator, gallery and performing space would offer a safe, nurturing environment for the young organization and its largely amateur artists. “When ArtServe asked, I told them I didn’t need my car to drive home because I would just float home,” she recalled. “We needed to grow and ArtServe was like going to heaven.” Wartenberg and her colleagues will make their debut on the ArtServe stage on Friday, Aug. 26 with a staged reading of “Enid’s Fly Trap,” Terry Baum’s play about the employees and patrons at an old-fashioned lesbian bar that has seen better days. Three regulars wind up at the colorful dive to celebrate Enid’s 60th birthday, when “a beautiful and very conventional female stranger” wanders into the bar and joins the festivities. In keeping with the group’s mission to provide opportunities for aspiring artists, three members of the cast have never performed on stage“Everybefore.time they finish a performance, I get goosebumps,” said Wartenberg, who tirelessly promotes the organization within the local women’s community. “It’s just so exciting and the women have been so thrilled to be able to get together in a women’s only space and be comfortable.”Inaddition to a growing schedule of public and women-only events, she is committed to growing the organization, including recognition as a tax-deductible charitable organization from the Internal Revenue Service and recruiting board members and sponsors.Mostimportantly, Wartenberg celebrates the growing recognition of the women’s community. Since the pandemic, other theaters have added women’s nights and programming reflecting the experiences and interests of lesbian and queer women. “I’m really glad to see that. I don’t see that as competition at all. We provide a certain niche in the community as far as getting women into theater,” Wartenberg added. “The more choices women have to go to activities and continue to grow ourselves, the better.”
