The decriminalization of gay sex in Singapore is being hailed as a victory for LGBT rights in the Asia-Pacific region, a huge continent with almost five billion people and diverse laws and attitudes. Only a small number of jurisdictions permit same-sex marriage, partnerships, or unions, despite the fact that many have decriminalized sexual actions between people of the same sex. Singapore moderated its judgment by announcing that it will change its constitution to forbid such marriage from ever occurring. According to ABC News, many of the laws prohibiting males having sex with other men in the region were put into place during British colonial control in the 19th and 20th centuries, and often refer to such actions as breaches of the “order of nature.”
HUNGARY TO INVESTIGATE NETFLIX FOR POTENTIAL LGBT PROPAGANDA
A recent episode of the children’s animated series “Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous” included a kiss between two adolescent females that may have violated Hungary’s 2021 prohibition on LGBTthemed content directed at kids. According to news from Breitbart Europe, Netflix has been the subject of an inquiry by Hungary’s national media regulator. Hungary’s National Media and Communications Authority (NMHH) is investigating Netflix after receiving complaints over the “Camp Cretaceous” episode from concerned parents on the right-wing petition website CitizenGo. Despite the fact that this appears to be a violation of the Hungarian law banning trans and other LGBT content aimed at children, it is unclear whether the NMHH will be able to sue Netflix over the cartoon given that Netflix Hungary is registered in the Netherlands. As a result, the Hungarian media regulator may need to bring the matter up with Dutch authorities before any action is taken.

The federation then demanded that preventive efforts “free of stigmatizing messages towards LGBT+ people” be carried out. Nearly all monkeypox cases, according to studies from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other top scientific organizations, have been discovered in “men who have sex with men.”“We ask the Minister of Health of the Nation, Carla Vizzotti, that the Ministry initiates a vaccination campaign and incorporates the smallpox vaccine in the vaccination calendar, launching its production in the country,” Flavia Massenzio, president of the Argentine LGBT+ Federation, said to MacroPress.

If you’ve spent any time this year attending events in the Wilton Manors social or political scene, you’ve likely seen Leo. His eyes were beaming and his smile was bright. But diving headfirst into the community didn’t come naturally to him. Everyone who met him, loved him. But he struggled to accept that love. “What is apparent is when you loved him, he ran from you,” Caputo said. “There has to be something that happened at some point in his life that caused him to not be able to handle love.”But being together helped bring Leo out of his shell and into the community, and if you saw him smile, Caputo said it was genuine. “He wasn’t a ‘fake it till you make it’ [person].”

“I can’t tell you I have a mental illness because then I’m broken and you’re going to leave me. The shift happened to get him to go when I told him he’s having challenges with mentalRejectingwellness.”love was a key part of Leo’s struggle and became a go-to reaction when anyone got close. Caputo never met Leo’s family until after the suicide.

SEEING THE SIGNS About a month before he died, more signs began to appear. Trainers at his gym said he wasn’t putting in the same effort that transformed him from a skinny guy to muscled up man in under a year. Then he confided in Caputo that he was going to kill himself. Caputo contacted people that specialize in getting help for LGBT people in dire situations. He reluctantly began seeing someone.Butitmeant helping him get past the shame and changing one little word to get past Leo’s fears.
Through it all, Caputo has been supported by his closest friends and family doing whatever they can, from cleaning an already clean house to bringing over food to just listening. He also is dealing with the five stages of grief, often all at once.
At the Celebration of Life everyone will be given sunflower seeds and a dollar. Sunflowers were Leo’s favorite, and told Caputo specifically that he hoped the could be part of their landscaping.
with suicidal thoughts, please call the new suicide hotline. You can call or text 988 to reach trained counselors. to
SEEDING A LEGACY Caputo has been very open about his grief, sharing the news on social media, creating a memorial fund, and planning the Celebration of Life. Since the suicide, people with similar struggles have reached out to share their stories.“For the first time I feel myself picking up other people’s energy. When people are coming at you and they’re in a tough spot, I’m absorbing some of that. If that takes a little bit off them then that’s great, but that’s exhausting.”TheLeoPeralta Peak Purpose Fund will be managed by Our Fund Foundation and focus on helping LGBT with their mental health issues.“This is going to support people who are experiencing challenges to mental wellness, but I don’t think it’s my job yet to understand what that looks like. Leo and the world will make it clear to us.”
If or someone know struggles reach out to him and every time he rejected them. His parents wanted to know if this was over him not being accepted for being gay. And I think if this had happened eight months ago anybody would have believed that. But he got to shine being gay.” He came from Cuba to South Florida in his mid-teens. Even then he struggled with accepting love and had fights with his family. Eventually he went to Los Angeles to pursue acting. After a few months he was homeless and fighting addiction to crystal meth. Late last year he came back to the area and met Caputo. They met on a social media app, and their first date was going for a bike ride. “In my world he’s just so beautiful, and I couldn’t relate to the idea that he’d be interested in me.” They quickly began dating, Leo moved in, and Caputo called Leo his “future fiancé.” Making a connection with others, however, was“Thetough.people that truly have nobody? That scares me. He’d lived here for a year and had zero friends. I had some inexplicable feeling that I cannot leave him, I’ve gotta stick through this.”

“He wanted them really bad. When he told me he wanted sunflowers, there was this moment of brightness all over his face.” The dollar is a different kind of seed. It’s a seed for the fund. People can donate that dollar, and more if they can. Most of all, Caputo wants a lot of people there so Leo can feel the love. “I want as many people there as possible. I want Leo to see a crowd. There are other people that will be there that day and see that crowd and say ‘holy s**t, all these people came out!’ Someone’s gonna find some solace in all that.”

Working for a city is not a 9-5 job. Problems from sewage to noise to bad auto accidents can happen anytime and everyone from utility workers to police to elected officials field calls all hours of the day and night. Now Wilton Manors is moving to make the reward (pay) match the effort. At the city commission meeting on Aug. 23, commissioners discussed increasing their salaries, along with that of City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson and police officers. All those raises have been mentioned at previous meetings but took steps forward. Covering about two square miles and with a population of around 13,000, Wilton Manors is a small city by many metrics and public salaries are no exception. Commissioners say raising pay will help the city attract candidates to run, and retain talent.Pay for the mayor and commissioners has been stagnant since 2015 and, accounting for inflation, is about the same as they made in 2000. The proposed increase would bring the mayor’s pay to $30,000 and $25,000 for city commissioners, more than double what they make now. They also get health insurance, a benefit which would be codified in the ordinance.Withtwo commission seats and the mayor’s office up for election in November, Mayor Scott By John Hayden
The commission unanimously approved a ban on smoking in public parks. During the last legislative session in Tallahassee, lawmakers approved a bill giving local governments more control to set their own smoking policies.
Wilton Manors Police officers are also among the lowest paid in South Florida. As a result, many join the force, get experience, and move on to better paying jurisdictions.
“They’re still in contract. We as a commission decided to open up Article One [of the contract] which is salaries for the police officers. We didn’t have to do that. But we want to keep quality officers.”Thetwo sides are still working on finding a number that will work for the officers and the budget.Commissioners are also looking to increase the pay for City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson. She currently has an annual salary of $202,000. When pension benefits are added in, her total compensation is about $247,000. Average total compensation for city managers in Broward County is about $306,000. It was pointed out that, like police and elected officials, she gets called at all times and deals with residents and other employees.

SFGN, now is the moment to address now is the time to bring it up. The time is not next year when there’s not an election. It’s very easy to give yourself a raise when there’s no election.”Commissioners pointed out that other cities not only pay more, but also offer a stipend worth thousands of dollars that don’t need to be accounted for. Newton said he and others get calls at their “day jobs” as well as during all hours of the night. He believes the money will help attract top talent when the current commission is gone.“Wewill get more people to run for office if there’s a little more [money] in there. We need to make sure that, after we’re gone, people still want to run for the commission. Commissioners voted to move it to second reading and will hear additional public comments at a future meeting.
DEVELOPMENT MOVING FORWARD IN WILTON MANORS
Most people spoke in favor of the ordinance, with the only real debate being over fines and determining, like in the case of Hagen Park, where parking lots end and the park begins. On first reading a graduated fine schedule that went up to $250, was reduced to $25 per violation. This time people encouraged it to be somewhere in the middle and act as a deterrent. In the end, it was left at $25 and a general understanding that police would first warn people and ask them to stop before escalating to a ticket and fine.

During public comments, some residents urged the commission to tread cautiously. They worry that overdevelopment would have a very negative impact on the environment and hurt the natural beauty that attracts people to South Florida in the first place. These types of changes require an additional level of input and hearings. Commissioners voted to approve the plan for now and forward it to the state and county for review, followed by another public hearing.
Updates on all salary discussions will be brought up at a future city commission meeting. The next is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 13.
The city recently changed rules to allow By John Hayden for mid-rise buildings, which are defined as 4-8 residential floors, not counting any parking levels.Italso would help accommodate bringing a hotel or two into the city. Commissioner Mike Bracchi expressed concern that a big hotel in the entertainment district would be overdevelopment, as opposed to a boutique hotel that would only have a few dozen rooms.
Newton said a huge, 200 room hotel is unlikely. He said developers have told him the city can’t support that many rooms. Even if the change goes through, the commission will have final say over specific development proposals.
A standing room only crowd packed the Wilton Manors City Commission meeting room and spilled out into the anteroom. Most were there to learn more about proposed changes to “future land use” and the “goals and objectives.”
The city has already begun talking with the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) about increasing salaries, despite being in the middle of the current collective bargaining agreement.
After years of discussion about where and how much to develop, plans seem to be gaining momentum. Much of the plans revolve around Transit Oriented Corridors (TOC) around Dixie Highway north and south from Five Points, and the area east of Five Points to 15th Avenue by Manor Lanes. Mayor Scott Newton took a moment to clarify that neighborhoods behind the bowling alley, the lot where the church burned down, and homes west of the Pride Center, Andrews Ave. around St. Clements Church, around Wilton Elementary are not included in the TOCs and aren’t affected by proposed changes. TOCs north, south, and east would be affected, but TOC west would not. The proposed land use changes would set density and allotments for how many and which types of units can go in an area.

WILTON MANORS CITY
It’s the time of year when political yard signs dot the landscape. But the landscape in Wilton Manors has a lot fewer of them after the city ordered many of them removed. Code Compliance removed them from public property, angering candidates and their supporters.“Ourresidents are proudly displaying the signs of Candidates they are supporting, and our city has taken away their rights,” City Commission candidate Don D’Arminio said. Wilton Manors resident Carl Shearer was home and confronted the officer who had picked up the campaign sign. Much of the issue comes down to what a property owner thinks they own versus what they actually own. Wilton Manors City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson said temporary signage on public land, such as medians, the right of way between streets and sidewalks, and swale is prohibited by code. Much of the confusion comes to misunderstandings of

Mayor Scott Newton, who is running for reelection this year, said any signs, including his, need to be in the proper place. However some say this isn’t the best use of city resources and the city, to some degree, seems to agree. Some campaigns accuse other campaigns of bringing the issue to code enforcement’s attention. So far, no one has admitted to doing so.

John McDonald THE RACE TO REPLACE NIKKI FRIED AS FLORIDA’S AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER IS A PERPLEXING ONE FOR LGBT VOTERS. Naomi Esther Blemur won the Democratic nomination last week for the cabinet-level position despite revelations she cultivated anti-LGBT remarks on Facebook.
The posts have been deleted, but they resulted in rescinded endorsements by MiamiDade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Sens. Annette Taddeo and Shevrin Jones. Jones, Florida’s first gay Black Senator, said he found the posts unsettling and counter to his record.

“We’re now going to see how the @ FlaDems handle their state wide nominee for Ag Commissioner being a supporter of conversion therapy and anti-choice,” tweeted Adam Christensen, a Gainesville based political operative. “What a completely preventableChristensen, cluster.”who had campaigned for Ag Commissioner only to be disqualified for not meeting the 30-year-old age minimum, brought Blemur’s social media activity to light. Screenshots showed Blemur decrying abortion as a “sin,” sharing “ex-gay” videos and defending a homophobic church sermon by minister Kim Burrell.
North Miami Councilman Scott Galvin told SFGN he is aware of the controversy, but has never heard Blemur make any antiLGBT comments. Blemur issued a statement claiming she has always been pro-choice and remains a LGBT ally. Blemur won the Dems’ nomination by 20 percentage points and now faces Senate President Wilton Simpson, a Republican, in November’s general election. The Ag Commissioner seat became open when Fried sought the Dems’ nomination for governor, ultimately losing to Charlie Crist.
“We wanted to start the season with something like this – it’s not about honoring the Master Chorale’s history, but broadcasting to audiences what they could expect in the next 20 years,” said Karlin.
The fact is that if we think about adding positive more than we think about eliminating the negative, we do not lose more energy in the thought process. Instead, we begin to develop healthy behaviors that will ultimately serve to push out the negative ones. It may seem obvious now, but once you flip your cup rightside up under the stream of life’s water, there will simply be no more room for negative emptiness.
THE NEGATIVE CHARGE How many times have you sat there and worried about the future so much that when the future arrives, you have no energy to face it? Common negative charging events include suffering from a trauma, dealing with toxic people, suffering from depression/anxiety, negative self-talk and dwelling on low selfesteem.

THE SOLUTION If a cup is empty, do you hold it upside down to fill it up? If your phone battery has lost its charge, do you set it next to your charger where it continues to conduct negative energy, or do you plug it in for some positivity? That is the solution. As it pertains to our energy level, we must consider the positive ions more than the negative to fill our cup and recharge. We can save the negative ions for our counseling sessions.

Turing was persecuted during his lifetime, but exonerated and celebrated decades later. Credit: Wikipedia. Throughout the day, it is easy to become drained, but it’s not so easy to know why. We all know that a jolt of caffeine can bring us back, but what if we knew the cause for our exhaustion? Could we be able to prevent it? Today, I’m going to provide a look into these questions with current research, and then show a few examples of energy recharging problems with solutions. The research is in, and it shows that we know a lot of things that are draining our cup, yet we still take part in these activities. In fact, in most cases we are overly concerned about the things that are draining our cup, further enabling the effect to take place. It’s like riding your bike and looking at a nail, concentrating on that nail, and trying to avoid it. The fact is that you’re more likely to hit something you are placing all your attention on.

The Master Chorale of South Florida will open their 20th anniversary season with a free performance of James McCarthy’s cantata “Codebreaker” on Sunday, Sept. 18. The work recounts key episodes in the life of Alan Turing, the British mathematician and early computer scientist who saved countless lives by deciphering NaziThecodes.concert at the Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale will be led by Scott AuCoin, the chorale’s associate conductor and a doctoral student at the University of Miami. “Codebreaker” is also the subject of AuCoin’s dissertation, and he will be bringing musicians from the university to join the chorale in the performance.
• Spend time with loved ones instead of toxic people.
• Instead of worrying about not getting enough sleep, think about ways you can practice sleep hygiene (reading instead of looking at screens, tea instead of Coke, quiet meditation instead of drama-filled discussion).
“I hope this concert serves as a reminder that queer people are not people to be silenced or feared,” explained AuCoin. “We’re here, we’ve been here, and we’re history-makers. We’re all ‘codebreakers.’” Despite his heroic contribution to the war effort, Turing was still subject to antihomosexual “buggery” laws in the United Kingdom. In 1952, he was prosecuted and underwent chemical castration. Two years later he died of cyanide poisoning, presumably suicide. More than 50 years later, after the laws were changed, Turing was granted a posthumous pardon by Queen Elizabeth, and the prime minister publicly apologized on behalf of the government. A later act, known as the “Alan Turing law,” retroactively pardoned all gay men convicted for homosexual acts.
AuCoin said the timing of this performance could not be timelier for LGBT audiences in South Florida with the passage earlier this year of the “Don’t Say Gay” law.
For this performance, the chorale partnered with Our Fund and the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, as well as the Sunshine Cathedral. In addition to concerts featuring traditional choral masterworks, the 20th anniversary season will be bookended next spring with “Light on the Shadows,” in support of the Alzheimer’s Association and acknowledging South Florida’s senior population.“Whatwe’re trying to communicate is that the Master Chorale of South Florida is the voice of the community. Our singers are all volunteers – doctors, realtors, other professionals who serve the community –and we’re trying to offer unique, engaging, moving community projects,” Karlin said.

“This is exactly the type of story we need to be telling, especially in Florida right now. [Turing] was struck down by his own government that he tried to save. And now our own legislature is trying to silence queer voices,” he pointed out.
McCarthy’s cantata, which AuCoin describes as filled with singable melodies and cinematic harmonies, includes three movements based on important periods in Turing’s life: a teenage relationship with another boy who would tragically die while a teen; his work during World War II breaking Nazi naval codes; and his painful conviction and suicide, including an imagined afterlife.

I’ve often joked that I will go to the ends of the earth for a good meal. Recently I did go for two brunches, one in Boca and another in Coral Gables. It may not be “the ends of the earth” but after driving on 95, it seems like it.

Dessert options include a “Mile High Beach Pie,” Corvina’s version of a Key Lime tart, topped with about four inches of meringue; and Old San Juan cheesecake flan, which is basically a flan surrounding a cheesecake center. Both are delicious, but for $11 are rather skimpy servings. Even if you don’t end with dessert, the meal ends on a sweet note as caramel corn is presented with your bill.

Having already enjoyed wonderful food and service at Corvino for dinner, we looked forward to brunch, and we weren’t disappointed. The menu is varied, truly offering something for everyone and the cocktail service is sensational. A Bloody Mary bar is available for $12-$18, depending on the choice of liquor. Guests can order their choice of vodka and can choose from with tomato juice, a house bloody Mary mix, hot sauces, fruits and veggies, and horseradish. A special brunch cocktail menu and full bar are also available, along with bottomless mimosas.

Rick Karlin topped with eel sauce and tempura flakes and was then torched tableside. I’m not certain the torching did anything for the flavor, but it was impressive nonetheless. My niece has a sweet tooth, so she made a beeline for the French toast. A large slice of brioche comes topped with cinnamon ice cream and crumbled Froot Loops. She didn’t notice that the menu also lists caramelized bacon, and she doesn’t eat meat. Our wonderful (and handsome!) server immediately replaced the dish, remade sans bacon. Other than an abundance of ice cream, this made for a delicious dish. My hubby opted for his fave, the lobster roll, which featured plentiful lobster in a light butter dressing. The only problem was, rather than the typical lobster roll bun, they served all the deliciousness on a skimpy hotdog roll, making the dish difficult to eat. The sandwich was accompanied by perfectly cooked truffled fries. I thought I’d go for something light after my large maki roll and ordered the avocado toast. The avocado mash was a bit tart, but the smoked salmon, crispy capers, and cherry tomatoes balanced it out somewhat. The portion was huge, with plentiful toppings atop two big slices of toast. I ate half of one slice and took the remainder home, where it served as two meals. Other brunch options include a ham and brie or veggie omelet, steak and eggs, pancakes, yogurt and fruit parfait, and a Monte Cristo sandwich. We finished up by sharing the “Hana” a molten lava cake, dark and rich made with 70% cacao and served with a scoop of refreshing vanilla ice cream; it was so rich and decadent we could only manage a few bites each. Dark, rich coffee with non-dairy milk brought the meal to the perfect conclusion.
THE VIVIENNE ON HER ‘ALL STARS 7’ RUN & BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS
We met my niece for Guncles’ Day for brunch near her new apartment in Coral Gables. I’d read about Crudos and had been wanting to check it out, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. When my niece arrived, she thought she was in the wrong place, saying that it looks more like a nightclub. She’s not wrong, and Crudos does take on a club vibe at night, especially in the upstairs cocktail bar, with its DJ and light bites menu. The downstairs looks rather loungey with just a small banquette area amidst the eyepopping art collection. We were one of two parties enjoying brunch, although a few more filtered in later in the afternoon. Since the vibe was so clubby, I decided to start with a drink. Cocktails are not your usual variations on Bloody Mary and Mimosa. I tried the Frida Love, a fizzy confection of tequila and ginger beer with a rosemary-ginger reduction. It was refreshing and went down easy. It also served as palate brightener for all the delightful flavors that were to come. The brunch menu isn’t large or very diverse, and the starters are limited to lobster bisque and truffle fries, but the regular menu is also available, so we began with some appetizers. Tuna tartare was not what we expected. White instead of pinkish-red in color, it was stacked into a tower with quinoa, spicy mayo, avocado and topped with a little salmon roe; it was light and fresh. The truffle langoustine casserole presented a trio of large crustaceans, perfectly cooked atop a tasty corn puree, and topped with fried leeks. I opted to try one of Crudos’ signature rolls, the House on Fire. A large roll (at least eight pieces) featured shrimp tempura, crab, roe, and avocado Visit SFGN.com to find out more.
