The grant is a nonrestricted donation, which means the money can be used in any way the recipient sees fit. Latinos Salud has locations in Miami, Miami Beach and Wilton Manors. Its mission is to provide client-centered, culturally competent health education and integrated preventive, screening, and linkage services throughout South Florida. The grant from The Campbell Foundation helps. “The HIV crisis here in South Florida is unparalleled,” Stephen Fallon, Executive Director said. “Together, Miami-Dade and Broward counties rank first in the nation for new HIV cases, and 2nd for new AIDS cases. ‘Britain’s most prolific rapist’ jailed for life
Zambia ambassador speaks out about gay rights, loses job
Reynhard Sinaga, a 36-year-old student from Indonesia, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday Jan. 6 for attacking nearly 200 young men living in Manchester. The Guardian reported that Sinaga filmed the offenses, 136 of them being rapes. Sinaga drugged men he met at a club near his apartment and raped them while they were unconscious, the Guardian reported. Many of the men didn’t even know they’d been attacked. The northwest deputy chief crown prosecutor, Ian Rushton called Sinaga the “most prolific rapist in British legal history.” “You are an evil serial sexual offender who preyed on young men who came into the city centre wanting nothing more than a good night with their friends. statement described you as a monster,” Judge Suzanne Goddard said of Sinaga. Sinaga must serve 30 years before he’ll be considered for parole, but Goddard said he should never be released.
Daniel L. Foote, U.S. ambassador to Zambia said that throwing a gay couple in jail was “horrifying.” After threats and the Zambian president saying they didn’t want him there, the U.S. recalled Foote, according to the New York Times. Being gay in Zambia is still a crime — the Zambian government put the gay couple in jail for “crimes against the order of nature,” something Foote publicly took a stand against. Zambian President Edgar Lungu said he would complain to the Trump administration. “The United States firmly opposes abuses against L.G.B.T.I. persons. Governments have an obligation to ensure that all people can freely enjoy the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms to which they are entitled,” the State Department said in a

Asia’s first queer streaming service launches amid gay bans
Sports diversity expert proposes banning players for homophobic remarks
GagaOOLala, deemed “Queer Netflix,” launched across Asia despite the bans on gay sex in some countries, according to Pink News. Some Asian countries censor some films featuring gay sex, such as Malaysia. Founder Jay Lin said that because Taiwan legalised gay marriage, that opened the door for a streaming service ike GagaOOLala, Pink News reported. “One of the main impetuses for me to create GagaOOLala is to dispel a lot of the myths and misconceptions that a lot of people might have about LGBT people,” Lin said, according to Pink News. “We’re not all living really tragic lives — we’re entrepreneurs, we’re fathers.” Almost 280,000 people have already subscribed to GagaOOLala. Most are

After Australian cricket player Marcus Stoinis called another player a “faggot,” and didn’t get suspended, Ryan Storr, a Western Sydney University sports diversity expert says players should be banned for such homophobic remarks. Stoinis was fined $7,500 for his remarks, but Storr says his punishment was too lenient, calling for a blanket ban for players who say homophobic slurs. Storr, who authored several research projects on cricket, including one on LGBT inclusion in cricket, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “Unless there are repercussions for people saying homophobic remarks, we’re not going to get rid of them,” Storr told the Sydney Morning Herald. “Within the research I did, it showed that even at grassroots level it’s still common

to hear homophobic remarks.” Storr said that across Australian sports, rules against homophobia are all over the place, and need to be more clear cut.

‘Dracula’ creator says the vampire isn’t bisexual After reports that in the newest adaption of “Dracula” on Netflix, the notorious vampire, played by Claes Bang, will be bisexual, Steven Moffat, co-creator of the show clarified his sexuality, saying he isn’t. With the show’s other creator Mark Gatiss, who is gay, many fans started speculating whether they’d see a bisexual Dracula, according to Pink News. “He’s Bi-Homicidal, it’s not the same thing. He’s killing them, not dating them. He’s not actually having sex with anyone. He’s drinking their blood. You might need to delete your Tinder if that is what you think. Dracula has always fed off men and women… Horror should be transgressive, it should not be cozy. I think there are some really, really weird things in this, and I’m very proud of that,” Moffat told The Times. Dracula premiered on Netflix on Jan. 4.

Fans say James Charles made transphobic comment about military ban Memes have been floating around the internet, speculating that World War III could be on its way, and Youtuber James Charles took part, posting a series of photos dressed as a woman to avoid the draft to Twitter, according to Pop Buzz. Twitter users accused Charles of being transphobic for his comments, saying they were making fun of the Trump administration’s ban on transgender people in the military, Pop Buzz reported. Charles responded to the backlash, saying his tweet had nothing to do with the transgender military ban. “Not cute James. Some trans men and women would love to be able to serve their country...and this just a pathetic joke for clout with some brushed out photos at the expense of our trans community,” Jaremi Carey, RuPaul’s Drag Race star tweeted, according to Pop Buzz.

Steven Universe adds non-binary character Transgender actor Indya Moore debuted as a new non-binary character on one of the latest episodes of Cartoon Network’s series, “Steven Universe.” Moore will voice Shep, the newest nonbinary character on the show, adding to the LGBT inclusive cast and characters, according to LGBTQ Nation. In Steven Universe’s six-year run, it’s introduced transgender, intersex, and non-binary characters. Shep, who is another character, Sadie’s love interest, uses they/them pronouns, and is referred to as “partner” rather than boyfriend or girlfriend. Moore was the first transgender person to be featured on the cover of Elle magazine. They also made a cameo in “Queen & Slim” and was recently cast in the upcoming thriller, “Escape Room,” according to LGBTQ Nation. Last June, Cartoon Network confirmed that character Stevonnie is intersex and non-binary in a social media post.

Another Delay in Trial of 4 Men Accused of Hate Crime After Gay Pride Jason Parsley
T
he upcoming trial for four men accused of attacking a gay couple in 2018 after the closing festivities of Miami Beach Pride has been postponed until February. On Thursday, Dec. 19 the circuit court held a status conference in Miami on the matter. The case was continued until Feb. 10. The four defendants — Adonis Diaz, Juan Carlos Lopez, Luis Alonso Piovet, and Pablo Reinaldo Romo-Figueroa — all in their early 20s, have pled not guilty. The trial was supposed to start on Jan. 21 and before that Nov. 18. Here’s a recap of what allegedly happened: the attack took place when Rene Chalarca and Dmitry Logunov were leaving a public bathroom in Lummus Park in Miami Beach on April 8, 2018. “We were walking and holding hands and needed to use the bathroom,” Logunov told SFGN in 2018. So the two of them stopped at public restroom as they headed home for the evening.

As Logunov walked out of the restroom he was allegedly called a “faggot” in Spanish, punched, and then beaten unconscious. His boyfriend at the time, Chalarca, quickly intervened, but three more men jumped in and began to attack them both. “This was my first time going to a gay parade,” Chalarca said last year. Physically they’ve both recovered. The attack was caught on camera and the four suspects have been charged with three counts of aggravated battery and a hate crime enhancement was added to the charges.

Each day there will be different events ranging from “The Art & Technology of Speed & Design” on Thursday in Delray Beach, to “Electric & New Technologies” in West Palm Beach on Sunday Jan. 12, according to official advertisements. oreign policy took center stage on the presidential campaign this week with the assassination of a high-ranking Iranian general. “IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!,” President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday. Trump, in a unilateral decision, ordered a drone strike in Iraq which resulted in the death of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Fallout on Capitol Hill was swift with U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts vowing to block a war with Iran. The two northeastern liberal senators are part of a Democratic field with at least a dozen major primary candidates still in the running. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, the gay Naval intelligence officer, offered more nuanced responses. Biden said he was suited to pick up the pieces of the damage done by Trump, while Buttigieg
said the United States “must prepare for the impact on regional stability, complex forms of retaliation, and the potential for escalation into war.” The next DNC debate is Jan. 14 in Des Moines, Iowa. Qualifying candidates include: Biden, Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. Sanders remains the leader in fundraising efforts, pulling in $34.5 million during the fourth quarter. His campaign said the average donation was $18.53. The most common employers were: Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, the U.S. Postal Service and Target. Meanwhile Buttigieg was in a distant second in fundraising bringing in $24.7 million. Elsewhere, former Housing and Urban Development secretary Julian Castro dropped out of the race and endorsed Warren. The 45-year-old former mayor of San Antonio, Texas campaigned on reforming the Immigration and Nationality Act as to “not criminalize desperation.”

Carol Channing, the legendary Broadway actress, died on Jan. 15 at age 97 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was best know for her performances as Lorelei Lee in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and Dolly Gallagher Levi in “Hello Dolly!” Mary Oliver,
a lesbian poet, died on Jan. 17 at her Florida home at age 83. Her collection “American Primitive” won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize.
Harris Wofford, a Democratic senator and civil rights crusader, died on Jan. 21 at age 92. After his wife died, Wofford fell in love with Matthew Charlton. They married in 2018. Barbra Siperstein, a transgender rights crusader died on Feb. 3 at age 76
from cancer at a New Brunswick, N.J. hospital. A New Jersey law bears her name. It permits people in New Jersey to change their gender on their birth certificates without having to prove they’ve had surgery.
Patricia Nell Warren, author of the 1974 novel “The Front Runner” died on
Feb. 9 at age 82 in Santa Monica, Calif. from lung cancer. The iconic book was one of the first to feature an open same-sex male relationship.
Hilde Zadek,
a Vienna State Opera mainstay, died on Feb. 21 at 101 in Karlsruhe, Germany. She debuted in the title role of in Verdi’s “Aida” in 1947. She retired in 1971.
Jackie Shane,
a black transgender soul singer who received a 2018 Grammy nomination for best historical album for her album “Any Other Way,” died at age 78 in Nashville. Her body was found at her home on Feb. 21.
Gillian Freeman, the British novelist who wrote the 1961 novel “The Leather Boys” died on Feb. 23 at age 89 in London. The book was one of the first to portray working-class gay characters. Carrie Ann Lucas, a queer lawyer and
disability rights advocate, died on Feb. 24 at age 47 in Loveland, Colorado. She championed the rights of disabled parents.

Barbara Hammer, a lesbian filmmaker, died at age 79 from ovarian cancer
at her partner Florrie Burke’s home in Manhattan on March 16. Hammer celebrated lesbian sexuality in “Dyketactics” and other films.
Dr. Richard Green, a psychiatrist, died at age 82 on April 6 at his London home. He was one of the first to critique the idea that being queer is a psychiatric disorder. Michael Fesco,
the nightclub owner who provided open spaces (Ice Palace, Flamingo and other venues) for gay men to dance when LGBT people couldn’t be out, died on April 12 at age 84 in Palm Springs, California.
Lyra McKee, a 29-year-old, queer Northern Ireland journalist, died on April 18. She was killed while covering violence in Londonderry.

Yet he also attended meetings of the AIDS group ACT UP. Elka Gilmore, a queer chef known for her fusion cuisine, died at age 59 on July 6 in San Francisco. The New York Times Magazine called her “the enfant terrible of the modern California kitchen.”

home. The cause was thought to be suicide. Hodgman’s memoir “Bettyville” is his story of staying in Paris, Mo. with his widowed mother who had dementia.
Lee Bennett Hopkins, a gay poet who wrote and edited many books for children, died on Aug. 8 at age 81 in Cape Coral, Fla. In 2018, he edited “World Make Way: New Poems Inspired by Art from The Metropolitan Museum.” Sally Floyd, one of the inventors of Random Early Detection (RED), a widely used internet algorithm, died at age 69 on Aug. 25 at her Berkeley, Calif. home from cancer. She is survived by her wife Carole Leita. Valerie Harper, the actress best known as Rhoda Morgenstern on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died on Aug. 30 at age 80 from cancer. Harper was D.C.’s 2009 Capital Pride Parade grand marshal. Rip Taylor, a gay comedian known as The King of Confetti, died on Oct. 6 at age 88 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. John Giorno, a gay artist, died on Oct. 11 at his home in Manhattan at age 82. In 1969, he founded Dial-A-Poem, a communications system enabling people to hear Allen Ginsberg and other poets read their poems. Gillian Jagger, an artist whose work (installations of animal carcasses and tree trunks) wasn’t aligned with any one movement, died on Oct. 21 in Ellenville, N.Y. at age 88. “I felt that nature held the truth I wanted,” she told the U.K’s Public Monuments and Sculpture Association magazine. She is survived by her wife Connie Mander. Howard Cruse, a gay cartoonist whose comic strip “Wendel” ran in The Advocate for several years, died on Nov. 26 at age 75 in Pittsfield, Mass. from lymphoma. His graphic novel “Stuck Rubber Baby” and other work influenced other queer cartoonists. He is survived by his husband Ed Sedarbaum. Michael Howard, a gay military historian
and decorated combat veteran and pioneer of the “English school” of strategic studies, died on Nov. 30 in Swindon, England at age 97.
Shelley Morrison, who played Rosario on “Will and Grace” from 1999 to 2006, died on Dec. 1 in Los Angeles at age 83 from heart failure. William Luce,

3. Naked Bicyclist Causes Stir in Wilton Manors The dinner crowd in Wilton Manors got an eyeful in August when a man on a bicycle served up more than dessert as he pedaled down Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors Police received several calls from concerned citizens who called to report a naked man riding a bike in the city’s downtown district. According to police, the man parked his bike, entered RockHard Lovestuff at 2205 Wilton Drive A, donned an item of clothing from a shelf and informed employees he was trading his bicycle for the merchandise. He exited the store, strolled down Wilton Drive and then discarded the item of clothing, baring his birthday suit to rush hour traffic. Police Chief Paul O’Connell said officers located the man in the 2200 block of Wilton Drive and “provided him cover” while they evaluated the situation. He was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of lewd and lascivious exhibit by an individual 18 years or older and victim less than 16 years old, and one count of obstruct by a disguised person. bit.ly/2QwyknX

4. Henry Vidal’s Death Remains Unsolved Five years ago a popular local bartender, Henry Vidal, was found dead in his Wilton Manors apartment. His death was ruled a homicide. But last January Vidal’s mother told SFGN a detective told her investigators are no longer certain of that conclusion — instead it may have been an accident.
Here’s a recap:
Vidal’s mother, Caridad “Cary” Labarta, 63, of Pembroke Pines, Det. Mike Roque of the Broward Sheriff’s Office told her authorities are no longer certain Vidal, 32, was murdered. But homicide hasn’t been ruled out yet. Labarta said the detective told her that Vidal died of a spleen injury and that he could have fallen. Labarta also said Roque told her a second person’s DNA was discovered inside the apartment, but no match could be found in any database. “This is hard. I want to know what

That’s what I want to believe.” Police had said previously that they were looking for a person of interest, but Labarta said that Roque has told her no one has been contacted or interviewed. “They don’t have any suspects,” Labarta said. Vidal’s body was discovered by a co-worker in May 2015. His death was ruled a homicide after the medical examiner released details of the autopsy to authorities. If you pursue this arrest and the state declines to prosecute this case, it is my intention to immediately file suit against you and the city.” Further, Castrataro concluded, “your intentions are wrong and unfounded and yet continue to pursue them. 6. Steve Rothaus Takes Buyout From Miami Herald Steve Rothaus, the LGBT issues reporter for the Miami Herald, left the newspaper after its parent company offered a buyout to 450 employees. About 225 employees took the buyout including Rothaus. He was with the company for 33 years. “I’m very happy,” he said. “I am wrapping up 33 years at the Miami Herald. Twenty-one years of which I carved out a beat that no one else had ever done.” Rothaus said he has no regrets. And he’s not bitter. “I pioneered something and I stuck with it all of these years. I am very satisfied,” he said. “I’ve had a wonderful time doing what I do.” While Rothaus told SFGN he was content with leaving the Herald, and spending more time with his husband Ric, the state of the media industry saddened him. “We’re all sad that the world we once knew no longer exists,” he said. “Personally I think we were better off as a society when we were able to cover communities on a very personal level — covering the basics on a hyper local level. We were the watchdog. And that’s the sad [part] and it frightens me. It’s no longer possible because there is no financial model for it.” bit.ly/2QutuHN

7. Trial of Four Men Accused of Hate Crime in Miami Beach Continues to be Postponed There’s been a lot of interest in the trial The four alleged attackers (circled). The trial has been postponed several times, now it’s scheduled for Feb 10. The four defendants — Adonis Diaz, Juan Carlos Lopez, Luis Alonso Piovet, and Pablo Reinaldo Romo-Figueroa — all in their early 20s, have pled not guilty. Here’s a recap of what allegedly happened: the attack took place when Rene Chalarca and Dmitry Logunov were leaving a public bathroom in Lummus Park in Miami Beach on April 8, 2018. “We were walking and holding hands and needed to use the bathroom,” Logunov told SFGN in 2018. So the two of them stopped at public restroom as they headed home for the evening. As Logunov walked out of the restroom he was allegedly called a “faggot” in Spanish, punched, and then beaten unconscious. His boyfriend at the time, Chalarca, quickly intervened, but three more men jumped in and began to attack them both. The attack was caught on camera and the four suspects have been charged with three counts of aggravated battery and a hate crime enhancement was added to the charges. bit.ly/2twXZUC

A
t the beginning of every year, SFGN selects a national figure that is our “person of the year.” But it is really a misnomer. You see, we are not really choosing a person for having achieved some remarkable accomplishment the year before. We want to shine a spotlight on lives that have enlarged and emboldened our own. We want to celebrate individuals who have inspired others by being an inspiration themselves. The choices we have made, whether they were Anderson Cooper or Hillary Clinton, celebrate lifetimes of achievement representing or supporting the LGBT community. This year, taking the lead frankly from the Golden Globes, we are naming Ellen DeGeneres our person of the year based on her lifetime of achievements. You know Ellen. We all do. She is just simply one of us. She has gone through the same trails and traverses we do daily in our own lives. Ellen has done so with laughter and grace, humor and dance. So today, we take a few pages to acknowledge her life as an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. She starred in the sitcom “Ellen” from 1994 to 1998 and has hosted her syndicated TV talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” since 2003. Each day, as an out lesbian and authentic human being, Ellen brings laughter and love to our lives. It is as important to celebrate those traits as it is to acknowledge legislator who enact laws. Her first jobs were not on city commissions, to be sure. She did stand-up comedy on the Johnny Carson show and appeared as a film actress. She provided voices in

animated films like “Finding Nemo,” but in all her endeavors, from television shows to monologues, Ellen showcased authenticity and transparency. She still does. Even in the books she has authored, she has shared love and loss, but always candor and truth. Our lives take on new dimensions when we are true to ourselves and out to others. We open doors and horizons making it safer and simpler for tomorrow. During her fourth season of “The Ellen Show” in 1997, she came out as a lesbian in an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Eventually, her character, Ellen Morgan, also came out to a therapist played by Winfrey. Who better than the gay community is more qualified to identify with therapy? It was a historic television moment, taking pain and making it funny. Oh, if we could all do so every day. In our lives, we all face choices, as Ellen did. Honesty and openness to a worldwide audience can have personal and professional financial risk. It did for her, for quite a while. But she bounced back. So too must we all. Adversity is a part of life. You can’t presume harmony. You must find the calm in the midst of the cacophony. It’s always there, around us, about us. Still, when you boldly go where others have not gone before, there can also be great rewards. You can’t ever steal second base if you don’t take a lead off first. A comedian knows what it is like to stand naked upon a stage. A comedian knows how serious comedy is, how the wrong joke at the wrong time can send you career careening, Still, you take chances. Ellen has. In our world today, the gay “coming out process” may be as simple as pushing a curtain aside. You do not have to break down a closet. But back then, and we forget the
“back thens,” the Ellen show broke ground. Her forthrightness made it possible for others to follow in her footsteps. As Ellen prepares for a 2020 Hard Rock appearance this year, let’s sing a song and do a dance for her. She has been in our home as the host of the Academy and Grammy Awards. She has won 30 Emmys, 20 People’s Choice Awards, and countless honors for a virtual bouquet of charitable works. Of course, she markets herself, too. There are clothing lines and accessories, pet items and other apparel too. But you know what Ellen also wears around her neck? A Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded to her by Barack Obama in 2016. She is a comedian who has been named a special envoy for Global AIDS Awareness. Ellen DeGeneres is an entertainer who has become an activist, voicing out protests against trophy hunting, starting her own wildlife foundation. These are things she did not have to do. These are things she chose to do with her life, her celebrity, and her commitments. We salute them today. Ellen may have started her journey with gigs on a late-night comedy show. But she has shown all of us can reach the stars and fulfill our goals, if we give ourselves a chance, whether we are lesbians in lace or bears in leather, there is no stopping us. Just keep a song in your hearts, and a smile on your lips. You are only limited by the boundaries of your own imagination. You don’t need the spotlight. You don’t need to be on TV or radio, or hold an office. You just need to make choices which are honorable and true to yourself and others. You too can become the next Ellen. One of Ellen’s favorite quotes is “Sometimes you can’t see yourself clearly until you see yourself through the eyes of others.” We see Ellen as someone who enlightens our lives, celebrates our sexuality, and applauds her own identity So we unabashedly piggy back on what the Golden Globes did last week, and we celebrate at the beginning of 2020, the life and laughter Ellen DeGeneres has given to the LGBT community in America. Not to mention, a few others along the way. At SFGN’s anniversary party next week, we will be giving out a few more awards, live and local, acknowledging leaders in our own midst. They may not have the national recognition Ellen does, but they do not have to be. We simply look for those good people who do good deeds and enhance our lives by being decent people every day. Today, the story could be Ellen DeGeneres. Tomorrow, it could be yours.
You know Ellen. We all do. She is just simply one of us. She has gone through the same trails and traverses we do daily in our own lives.

fter reading all the comments concerning “Pig Week,” I feel that Wayne has some good points. I know Wayne personally and the two of us survived the Gay Holocaust of AIDS. In metro Stuart I know of 40 plus people that died from HIV. Wayne and me are long time survivors (both HIV negative). The people who
wrote letters need to read “And the Band Played On” by the deceased Randy Shilts (who died of AIDS himself). If there is a next sexual revolution there will always be a bug out there that will cause another plague.

Wherever You Are On God’s LGBTQIA Rainbow, You Are Welcome...
W
hy bother with New Year’s Resolutions? Too often they are little more than frustrating starts to the rest of our lives. But what if we crafted more than party favors? Those of us from a liturgical church tradition may have a head start. A new church year starts with the Season of Advent, which begins with the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The name “advent” is derived from a Latin word for “coming.” Many Christians craft their New Year’s resolutions with thought of the “three comings of Christ”: (1) the coming celebration of our Lord’s nativity Christmas; (2) the coming of Christ in our hearts; and (3) the coming of Christ at the end of the ages. Of course, the vast majority of the world uses the Gregorian calendar and celebrates the beginning of a new calendar year on January 1st. In pre-Christian times the Julian calendar also started on January 1st and was dedicated to Janus, the Roman god of gateways and beginnings, for whom the month of January is named. On January 1st and thereafter I urge you to recognize that each day is a new day and a new beginning. First and foremost, therefore, resolve to be free of the past. Be gentle with yourself. No one is perfect. Rather than beating oneself for a mistake, have a sense of humor (“Oh, there you go again, Mark”). Give up comparing people, including yourself to others. People are too complicated for a true, apples-to-apples
SUNDAY SERVICE 10 A.M. comparison anyway. Comparing ourselves to others almost inevitably leads to either judging oneself or others. Remember – your journey is unique … and so are the journeys others pursue. Be happy for them. Be happy for yourself. Smile, be friendly and be of good cheer. It’s a mood changer – for you and others; because non-verbal communications are often more powerful than the spoken word. Give back. Discover what it means to be blessed to be a blessing. Sharing of your time, talent, and treasure is powerful for you and for others. By giving back you shift your perspective from an internal, sometimes needy place to a source for external satisfaction and joy. It can be building Habitat homes or as simple as buying a cup of coffee or a sandwich for someone. Volunteer and interact with people so you can see the difference you make. Volunteering in our mobile Holy Grill comes to mind; feed the homeless and working poor – feed body and soul. Be compassionate and of good character with a healthy balance of Head and Heart. Just as anger and cruelty seem to soak into and darken one’s marrow, compassion (which comes with empathy and kindness) lightens the spirit for joy. Have integrity and be honest. These are values no one can take from you; they have to be given away. Respect the dignity of every human being – dealing honestly and justly with all. Eschew divisiveness in favor of an inclusive sense of community for peaceful living.

Set in a South Florida police station in the middle of the night, two parents search for their missing teenage son, who happens to be African American. “1917” took home the Golden Globe for best drama already, but the World War I drama from Sam Mendes finally lands in South Florida theaters this weekend. and Glory 1 Pain Glory, hallelujah! With “Pain and Glory” (Sony Pictures Classics), Almodóvar has not only returned to his former glory, but exceeded it, as well. An intimate and personal amalgamation of several of the elements we have come to expect from an Almodóvar film (including a singing Penelope Cruz), “Pain and Glory” strikes the perfect balance between drama and comedy in ways that are unique to the writer/director in his marvelous portrait of gay writer/director Salvador (Antonio Banderas).
2 Parasite Social studies Like Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood,” Bong Joon-Ho’s masterful “Parasite” takes viewers on a wild ride leading to an unshakeable finale. A 21st century comedy of manners, equal parts “Shoplifters” and “The Favourite,” “Parasite” stands out as the most original commentary, both hilarious and horrifying, on class and society in the age of Trump in a year when other movies (including “Knives Out” and “Ready Or Not”) also attempted to do the same with varying degrees of success.
Once Upon a Time 3 in...Hollywood Tarantino-a-go-go
Obsessive auteur Quentin Tarantino takes his longstanding cinematic love affair with Hollywood to new and exhilarating heights in “Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood” (Sony/Columbia). Drawing on his own oeuvre as well as the vast entertainments from mid-20thcentury movies and television, the sprawling (nearly three hours!) epic is
Tarantino’s most ambitious patchwork quilt film; alternately comforting and gripping.
Rabbit 4 Jojo Do the bunny hop As WWII movies go, nothing about “Jojo Rabbit” is like anything we’ve seen before, including the relationship between Captain K and his devoted lover Finkel (Alfie Allen). There are surprising anachronistic details throughout the movie, such as The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” – sung in German — playing over the opening credits, while David Bowie’s “Helden” (“Heroes” in German) closes out the movie — which adds to its cheekiness. Additionally, the language of the film, particularly in the interactions between Jojo and Hitler, is extremely modern. One thing is for certain, love it or hate it, “Jojo Rabbit” is one of a kind.
5 Booksmart Super Smart “Booksmart” packs in more laughs than any other comedy this year. Feldstein and Dever are wonderful and command our attention in every scene. Each of the supporting players is also strong, making this one of the best ensemble comedies of the 2010s. Get schooled!
Story 6 Marriage Divorce American style Remember Noah Baumbach’s 2005 divorce movie “The Squid and the Whale”? Remember the gut-punch that movie packed? Well, that’s nothing compared to what he puts us through in “Marriage Story.” It’s a devasting portrait of the end of a marriage, including some scenes of happier

times, as well as the fallout of what happens to children and extended family members in the process. “Marriage Story” also features unforgettable performances by two actors at the peak of the talents, Scarlett Johansson (who was equally amazing in 2019’s “Jojo Rabbit”) and Adam Driver (whose “Marriage Story” performance tops that of the one he gave in 2019’s “The Report”).
7 Diamantino Diamond stud It’s a safe bet that you’ve never seen anything quite like “Diamantino” (Kino Lorber), the bizarre feature film debut of cowriters/co-directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt. A surreal and fantastical comedy about star footballer Diamantino Matamouros (the sizzling Carloto Cotta who, thankfully, spends much of the movie in various states of undress), who is unwittingly recruited to help in a nationalist plot to have Portugal leave the E.U.
Farewell 8 The So long, farewell The wedding scene, which takes up a big
(almost too big) portion of the movie is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. As Billi, Awkwafina displays a much wider acting range than we previously saw when she played Peik Lin Goh in “Crazy Rich Asians.” It’s a performance worth of being remembered when awards season rolls around.
9 Waves Soaked in emotion The combination of Shults’ writing and directing and the performances of the cast, both young (Harrison, Russell, Hedges and Demie) and older (Brown and Goldsberry) makes “Waves” exceptional and genuine. For an unforgettable movie experience, let “Waves” wash over you.
Gems 10 Uncut Rough Diamond Whether you love or hate Sandler, his bid to be taken seriously in “Uncut Gems” pays off. It’s the most nuanced and unexpected performance of his career, earning him awards and nominations galore. Sandler fans going to see “Uncut Gems” expecting to laugh, will be disappointed. Instead, they will see an actor coming into his own.

After Disappointment, RuPaul Hits the Road in New Comedy J.W. Arnold
T
o say RuPaul Charles’ new year has gotten off to a mixed start is an understatement. Last week, Fox executives announced the cancellation of the Emmy Award-winning “Drag Race” diva’s new daytime talk show after a three-week test run in seven markets. (LGBT-friendly South Florida wasn’t one.) Called “a modern take on the talk show format,” RuPaul—sans drag—attracted A-list celebrities, all with a certain LGBT appeal, including James Corden, Ciara, Iggy Azalea, Adam Lambert, Lisa Vanderpump, Ricki Lake, Blac Chyna and Paula Abdul. And “Drag Race” judges Michelle Visage and Ross Mathews reprised their roles as regular studio sidekicks. Industry media blamed the decision in part on downsizing by Fox following its acquisition by Disney, but ultimately the ratings apparently just didn’t stand up against other network programming. Perhaps audiences expecting a daily dose of over-the-top drag were disappointed by the subtle, soft-spoken man behind the makeup. They certainly seemed to prefer sassy Wendy Williams and straight-talking “Divorce Court” judge Lynn Toler. RuPaul gets another shot on Friday, Jan. 10 with the release of “AJ and the Queen,” a 10-episode comedy on Netflix, developed by Michael Patrick King (“Sex and the City”). The plot of “AJ” goes something like this: Robert Lee (RuPaul), better known as the drag queen Ruby Red, has big dreams of opening his very own drag club. After years of performing in clubs all across the country, he has scrimped and saved. Robert is one signed lease away from turning his

RuPaul has described the series as “edgy” with “some dark themes,” noting “this show isn’t about a drag queen in a kid’s show. This is about a kid in a drag queen’s show.” “It was something I was eager to explore,” he told Variety. “To prove to myself that I’m not dead inside. I proved to myself that I could pull those emotions up. It’s intoxicating.”

ince the “Golden Girls” premiered nearly four decades ago, the four grandmothers sharing a house in Miami have earned a place in American pop culture. Reruns are a staple of TV Land and other cable networks and the show has inspired board games, breakfast cereal, “children’s” toys and more than a few stage adaptations. In “That Golden Girls Show: A Puppet Parody,” coming to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 19, the sassy seniors are reimagined as fuzzy “Sesame Street”style puppets. Unlike other shows that simply stage previously aired television episodes, this production features three brand-new stories, written especially for the tour. Ashley Brooke, the puppeteer who portrays Sophia, said audiences won’t be disappointed, though. “All the zingers are there,” said Brooke, “but you’ve never seen the stories. It’s a cool concept with lots of little surprises.” The show was an Off Broadway hit just a couple of years ago, fueled by the success of “Avenue Q,” an adult-themed take on “Sesame Street” with puppets and all. Producers decided the time was right to revive the show and take it on the road. Brooke, an “Avenue Q” veteran who originally trained to be a puppeteer, joined
the cast in August and is really getting settled into the role as the smart-talking Sophia. “It’s very similar to ‘Avenue Q’ in the way the actor and puppet are married on the stage. They act like one unit and the audience sees both on stage throughout the show,” she explained. “The more [the cast] get to know each other as people behind the puppets, that camaraderie comes through in the show and we get stronger with time.” A 31-year-old millennial, Brooke really doesn’t remember the original run of the show, but had caught a few episodes in syndication over the years. “I had no idea what a cult following ‘Golden Girls’ has! People are fanatic… they show up dressed up as old ladies, ‘drag’ old ladies, wearing t-shirts. They yell out the one-liners before we get to them. They come with Girls Night Out parties, Boys Night Out, bachelorette parties,” she said. “They’re crazy.” When asked why “Golden Girls” continues to appeal to audiences, the New York native said the magic was in the characters. “I think it’s a show about good people,” she said. “Good people who are trying their best and always loving each other. It was really ahead of its time in dealing with issues like body positivity and feminism… and it’s just plain funny.”
“That Golden Girls Show: A Puppet Parody” will be performed on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets start at $45 at BrowardCenter.org.

Papi Chulo elcome to Queerly Digital, a monthly column for cinema lovers from across the LGBT spectrum. All titles are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, or both. This column will as the months progress, be sure to include titles which honor all LGBT experiences.

penly gay actor Matt Bomer is wonderful in “Papi Chulo,” an independently produced low budget film now available on DVD. Bomer, a well-known actor who has yet to achieve the stardom he deserves, carries the film in a role which allows him to display a wide range of emotions. Bomer plays Sean, an openly gay TV weatherman in Los Angeles who suffers an emotional breakdown live on the air. After he’s forced to take a vacation by the station manager, we learn that Sean recently broke up with a boyfriend. He isn’t taking it well, and in fact leaves his ex a series of voicemails in order to assure his ex that he’s OK. He never gets a response. Enter Ernesto (Alejandro Patino) a Latino migrant day laborer who is hired by Sean to paint the deck of his house. Ernesto barely speaks English, but somehow, they manage to communicate. Before long Sean takes Ernesto rowing on a lake and hiking in a mountaintop park—he pays Ernesto their agreed upon rate of $200 per day for these excursions. Sean, you see, is desperately lonely and sees Ernesto as a replacement for his ex, even though Ernesto is a happily married straight man with children. “Papi Chulo” tells a very unusual story about a man whose loneliness pushes him over the edge. Sean doesn’t realize that he’s making a fool out of himself with Ernesto, a decent man who doesn’t quite know how to respond to all of this sudden attention.
The film could have been depressing, but director John Butler’s inventive script and Bomer’s courageous performance turns “Papi Chulo” into a moving story. And to balance things out, Butler includes several laugh out loud moments, such as when Sean begins talking incessantly as he and Ernesto are out on one of their day trips—Sean is practically manic as he goes on and on about how affected he is by the loss of his ex. “He just keeps talking, so I say yes, yes,” Ernesto, speaking in Spanish, says to his patient wife over the phone, as Sean continues babbling. But there are also profoundly moving moments. In one unforgettable scene, Sean crashes a party at Ernesto’s house, literally stopping the party as he cries out about his intense loneliness. In a perfect world, Bomer would be winning awards for his acting for this gut wrenching scene alone. But the sad truth is that “Papi Chulo” is a small film, and probably won’t get much notice. More’s the pity, because it’s a delightful story about a broken man who slowly learns how to repair himself. Patino offers strong support in his role as Sean’s bought friend, who’s at first embarrassed by the attention he’s receiving, but who eventually comes to feel sympathy for Sean and returns the friendship. At once funny, sad, sweet and touching, “Papi Chulo” is something different, and it’s well worth seeing.

onnie Larsen likes bathhouses. In fact, he’s been known to crash at Steamworks, the legendary Chicago bathhouse, rather than a hotel while on overnight trips to the Windy City. “I always meet the most interesting people at bathhouses,” the gregarious theater producer and playwright earnestly said. “You never know who you will run in to.” It’s surprising that Larsen has never penned a play about bathhouses. His “AllMale Peep Show” chronicled adventures in Times Square while the writer lived in New York City in the 1990s. “Making Porn” was an Off-Broadway hit and inspired another Larsen classic, “Shooting Porn.” And then there was the semi-autobiographical “Cocksucker: A Love Story” about a young man’s sexual adventures at truck stops. Larsen certainly met “interesting” people there. While on one of those trips to Chicago to present his “Penis Talk Show,” Larsen saw a flyer for “Steamworks the Musical” at the local Annoyance Theatre. He didn’t think much about it at first, but on a subsequent trip, he again encountered a bill advertising the play and bought a ticket. “It was so much fun and the actors were having a great time,” he recalled. “I knew it could be a big hit in Wilton Manors.” The show, created by director Clay Goodpasture, composer Tara Trudell and several original cast members, is essentially a cabaret with a very thin plot featuring the patrons of Steamworks. Al, an innocent young twink from Nebraska, arrives declaring “I’ve never been gay before,” (“except for a hot threesome in Lincoln”). He immediately meets Carol, the resident Boystown fag hag who endlessly complains that she can’t score a man on the North Halstead strip. Al quickly learns “the lay of the land” from bathhouse attendants Twinkie-Dee and Twinkie-Dum and longtime customer Chester, who claims he hasn’t left the building in 12 years. When meeting with theater leaders about the rights, Larsen realized there was something more to the plot when he was told it was like a gay “Alice in Wonderland.” The

characters were named Al (Alice), TwinkieDee and Twinkee-Dum (Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum) and Chester (Chesire). “I remember thinking that sure was trippy,” Larsen admitted with his throaty laugh, “because this certainly isn’t deep theater,” referencing his recent criticallyacclaimed—and serious—drama, “An Evening with John Wayne Gacy, Jr.” Larsen was given permission to adapt the story a bit and he moved the setting to South Florida. Carol has been renamed “Jennifer McClain,” with the permission of the popular cabaret singer, and while the original production costumed the actors in towels, Larsen’s version will offer plenty of full-frontal nudity. Larsen cast 15 local actors for the show, seeking to lend a realistic touch for audiences. There are twinks and muscle hunks, bears of all kinds, daddies and sons. “Who wants to see a show about a bathhouse with no nudity? Really? I also wanted this production to be a celebration of the diversity of our community,” he said. “This isn’t ‘Naked Boys Singing’,” a show that typically features “pretty” boys. Apparently, Larsen’s audiences don’t just enjoy seeing nudity on stage, they enjoy watching theater in the buff, too. Two advertised “naked nights” have already sold out and Larsen plans to add more. “The more the merrier,” he concluded.
