The question was posed to Buttigieg on stage at the Denver rally via a member of his campaign, who read the youth’s inquiry aloud during a question-and-answer session. But the youth later came on stage himself to hear Buttigieg’s response. Buttigieg was able to offer two pieces of advice to the youth. The first was take caution because the road forward may be difficult. “It won’t always be easy, but that’s OK, because you know who you are, and that’s really important,” Buttigieg said. “Because when you know who are you, you have a center of gravity that can hold you together when all kinds of chaos is happening around you.” The second piece of advice Buttigieg told the youth was to keep an eye open to others looking for him to lead as an example. “You will never know who’s taking their lead from you, who’s watching you and deciding that they can be a little brave because you’ve been brave,” Buttigieg said to

additional cheers from the audience. “When I was trying to figure out who I was,” Buttigieg added, “I was afraid that who I was might mean I could never make a difference, and what wound up happening instead was it’s a huge part of the difference I get to make.” Although there have been complaints from Rush Limbaugh over Buttigieg’s sexual orientation (and sometimes LGBT critics who say he’s not gay enough), the possibility of electing an openly gay person to the White House overwhelmingly has been an energizing factor in his candidacy, especially in Iowa, where he pulled off a victory. “You will never whose life you might be affecting right now, just by standing here right now,” Buttigieg said. “There’s a lot of power in that.” Buttigieg had one final thing to say to the youth. “Even if I can’t promise it’ll always be easy, I can promise that I’m going to be rooting for you,” Buttigieg said.

hen a 9-year-old boy asked Pete Buttigieg on stage at a campaign rally in Denver Sunday for advice on having the bravery to come out, the gay presidential hopeful initially didn’t have much to offer, but said he was very impressed. “I don’t think you need a lot of advice from me on bravery,” Buttigieg said. “You seem pretty strong.” Although Buttigieg is a Rhodes scholar, Harvard University, Afghanistan war veteran, McKinsey consultant who ran for re-election to public office as South Bend mayor after coming out as gay, Buttigieg — who came out in his 30s — told the youth, Zachary Ro of Lone Tree, Yolo., he didn’t have his bravery. “It took me a long time to figure out how to tell even my best friend I was gay, let alone how to get out there and tell the world,” Buttigieg said. “And to see you come to terms with who you are in a room full of thousands of people you’ve never met. That’s really something.” The crowd of Buttigieg supporters erupted in cheers and waved “Pete 2020” signs in response.

A Celebration of Queer Women’s Art
Denise Royal
T
hou Art Woman is an event celebrating LBT women and their allies through performance and visual art. The art is from a variety of disciplines and transcends age, race, ethnicity, and income. It’s creativity by women for an audience of women and their allies. The event started as an open mic event six years ago. It’s now an annual threeday event including an art exhibit at ArtServe, and an unforgettable evening of live performances at the Broward Center for Performing Arts (BCPA.) This year’s event will take place March 13-15. It kicks off with a reception at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale Friday, March 13 at 6 p.m. On Saturday, March 14 the event will move to the Amaturo Theater at Broward Center. Thou Art Woman celebrates bi, lesbian, trans, queer, and intersex artists from a variety of disciplines. It’s a great way to experience art, poetry, music, and more. The performances are the perfect settings for a date night or girls evening out. If you don’t live in South Florida, it’s also a great excuse to visit. There are resources at ThouArtWoman.com for people traveling from out of town.
The highlight of the weekend is the Open Mic and Performance Night at the BCPA. Nik Harris and G Wright Muir host the event. “It’s a unique night for us to have the stage and audience filled with LGBTQI women and allies,” Muir said. “We can be at ease and be ourselves. The night is ours. Much of the content in the performances will connect to us as lesbians — from humor to challenging experiences.” Organizers encourage attendees to come an hour before in order to mingle and enjoy each other’s company before the show begins. Performers include: • JADE • RITAH WILBURN • RED WORDZ • VANESSA CHARLOT • DANCE GROUP DA HAUS • MUSIC BY DJ JESIMIXX This year, early bird ticket sales make it easier to buy tickets at a lower price. “People who buy tickets now pay only $20,” Muir said. “At the door they’ll cost $30. We felt like this would be a better deal for people this year.”
Tickets are now available for purchase at http://bit.ly/TAW2020TicketMaster. For more information about the events, visit ThouArtWoman.com.

AOC IS COMING TO DRAG RACE
RUPAUL BRINGS DRAG TO SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, affectionately known as “AOC,” who represents New York’s 14th congressional district recently tweeted a video promo to her 6.3 million followers of her hosting gig on the upcoming 12th season of “Rupaul’s Drag Race” which will premiere on VH1 in a two-part episode on Feb. 28. AOC, a self-proclaimed Drag Race super fan said of the experience, “This was absolutely, 100% a peak experience” before thanking the show for having her. The queen of Drag and LGBT icon RuPaul Charles landed on the Saturday Night Live stage in his staple out of drag look with a brightly hued suit and bold glasses. The “Drag Race” creator regaled the audience during his opening monologue with memories of his arrival in New York in the ‘80s recalling a time when the city was “full of drugs, streetwalkers and seedy nightclubs. But it wasn’t all good.” Ru said he had hoped to share tales from his days as a lower east side drag queen, but the producers told him, “oh no, you betta don’t,” one of his ever present catchphrases. DWAYNE WADE & GABRIELLE UNION GIVE A MASTERCLASS IN PARENTING
Jameela Jamil star of “The Good Place” is facing backlash following the announcement of her latest project “Legendary” with HBO’s new streaming service HBO Max. “Legendary” tells the story of modern ball room culture. The backlash began following the announcement Jamil would emcee the show, but she later clarified she would only serve as a judge on the show. Some were still not satisfied saying Jamil does not identify as LGBT, but the actress defended herself by coming out as queer. A surprisingly convenient timing for such an announcement. This comes days after producer and writer Tracie Morrissey blasted Jamil on her Insta story claiming Jamil’s stories of cancer, car crashes, being chased by

bees, being confined to a wheelchair and other unfortunate events and accidents don’t add up. Morrissey said originally that the actress suffers from Munchausen syndrome, but later clarified saying she isn’t a medical professional, but rather just a nosy lady.
Dwayne Wade made an appearance on television Icon Ellen DeGeneres’s day-time show recently to promote an upcoming documentary, but began by giving a master class in parenting by talking about accepting and supporting his 12-year-old child’s decision to use the pronouns she/her. The former Heat player said he and actress wife Gabrielle Union feel a responsibility as “proud parents” and “proud allies” to listen to any issues their child might face, and to then provide “the best feedback that we can.” Wade says the 12-year-old, “came home and said, ‘Hey, call me Zaya, and I’m ready to take on this.’ I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. You are a leader, and it’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’”

LGBTQIA BITES Bisexual
NEW SPIDER-MAN RUMORED TO BE BISEXUAL Sony reportedly wants to make the next Spider-Man bisexual, according to We Got It Covered, who said sources informed them of a possible Spider-Verse live-action. The sources who, according to We Got It Covered, were right in the past, said the live-action would unite the different Peter Parkers (Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Toby Maguire). Sony wants to give Garfield’s Parker a boyfriend in the movie, sources said. “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! … So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” Garfield said in a 2013 Entertainment Weekly interview. We Got It Covered clarified that nothing is set in stone regarding the live-action or the character’s sexuality, and that the studio is only exploring the option at this stage.

50 CENT MAKES SEXUAL ABUSE JOKE ABOUT DWYANE WADE’S TRANSGENDER DAUGHTER After Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya came out as transgender, the internet erupted with support for the family. But along with the support came backlash — mostly saying Zaya, 12, is too young to decide she wants to transition. But on Sunday, Feb. 23, 50 Cent posted a meme on Instagram featuring Wade next to R. Kelly, who faces sex trafficking charges and has been accused of sexually abusing minors. In the meme, Kelly says “Heard you had a daughter now,” to which Wade replies, “U touch her I’ll kill ya,” according to Page Six. The Wade’s haven’t responded to 50 Cent’s post, but in a video, Wade asks Zaya what she’d do when people are mean to her for being herself. “I know it can get tough, definitely, but I think you push through, and you be the best you,” Zaya said in the video, according to Page Six. Wade confirmed his daughter is transgender in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres earlier this month.

STRANGER THINGS ACTOR SAYS WILL BYERS ISN’T ASEXUAL With the release of the latest trailer for “Stranger Things 4,” questions still remain about its characters. But Noah Schnapp, the actor who portrays Will Byers is clearing up one of them — he said his character isn’t asexual. Byers said in an episode that he won’t fall in love, and Mike Wheeler, another character, told Byers “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls.” Fans thought this meant Byers is asexual, but Schnapp, 15, said Byers, who was left single while fans saw his friends getting girlfriends, isn’t asexual or gay, he’s just behind. “Some people perceive it as Will could be gay, asexual or whatever. Or, like how I see it, he was stuck in the Upside Down, and he was away for so long that all of his friends started growing up while he was in this other world,” Schnapp told The Hollywood Reporter. Season 4 doesn’t have a release date yet.

BOLLYWOOD RELEASES FIRST GAY ROM-COM
STATE COULD BE FIRST IN AUSTRALIA TO BAN CONVERSION THERAPY
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (Be Extra Careful About Marriage) released on Friday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, as India’s first major gay romantic comedy, according to Agence France-Presse. India’s Supreme Court overturned colonial era rules criminalizing gay sex in 2018, but LGBT people still face stigma and discrimination. The film’s writer and director, Hitesh Kewalya, said he thought the best way to show that gay couples should be accepted is through comedy, AFP reported. Bhushan Kumar, chairman and managing director of coproducer T-Series told AFP they were on board the moment they heard the story. “When we heard the story, our first reaction was that it’s a perfect family entertainer that subtly speaks about

the fact [that] love has no boundaries, no gender,” Kumar told AFP. “We have an interesting message — of societal acceptance — albeit [presented] in a much more fun manner so that it reaches more people and helps them re-evaluate their pre-conditioned thoughts.”
Queensland in northeastern Australia introduced a bill that, if passed, would ban gay conversion therapy and make offenders face up to 18 months in jail, HuffPost reported. A Human Rights Law Centre report said gay conversion therapy is “pervasive” in Australia’s faith-based communities, and many of the bill’s opponents say the term conversion therapy is too broad, and could lead to innocent people going to jail, according to HuffPost. But LGBT advocates are still saying to pass the bill, as is. “It’s ground-breaking because it will be Australia’s first gay conversion therapy ban if the law is passed in Queensland,” Shelley Argent, a Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays in Australia spokeswoman told Reuters.

“Conversion therapy is psychological abuse because it’s telling the person they are broken.” Australia began allowing same-sex marriage in 2017, and decriminalized gay sex 20 years ago, HuffPost reported.

Justin Fashanu, Britain’s first out gay soccer player, was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame on Feb. 19, which would’ve been his 59th birthday. Fashanu took his own life in 1998, according to Daily Mail. Fashanu played for 22 teams over the course of his career, and came out in 1980. His induction into the hall of fame coincides with the National Football Museum’s LGBT+ Tour, which tells the story of LGBT football history, Daily Mail reported. But Fashanu’s niece, Amal Fashanu said, “It warms my heart to witness his legacy being honoured more than 21 years after his untimely passing.” “It’s unfortunate that we are still discussing discrimination in football in 2020 and it’s because of this harsh

So, there’s a lot of things that are very different for the female experience when it comes to cannabis and not to mention the fact that there are no safe spaces for us to be able to verbalize and vocalize those things, you know.” The Vagina Cannalogues is purported to be Florida’s first-all female traveling cannabis lecture series, providing a glimpse into how and why cannabis can benefit women. Each “cannalogue” is a look at the feminine experience as it pertains to cannabis use. The gathering is inclusive for all women — including those who identify as LBTQI. The lectures will focus on a broad spectrum of issues, including motherhood, combating stigmas from family, friends, or society at large, domestic violence, marriage, relationships, sex, intimacy, and so much more.

TRUMP NAMES GRENELL AS

The move puts Grenell — now the U.S. Ambassador to Germany — in charge of overseeing U.S. intelligence agencies and advising Trump and the national security adviser on measures related to national security. Grenell arguably will be the most senior openly gay official of any administration in U.S. history, or the first openly gay Cabinet member, although as an appointee in an acting role, his job would technically be temporary and wouldn’t require Senate approval, so his claim to that distinction is dubious. lorida Congressman Matt Gaetz used an appearance on The View last week to highlight the Trump administration’s commitment to gay Americans. Gaetz went on the daytime talk show for a political discussion with co-hosts Joy Behar, Whoppi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain. The Republican lawmaker from the Florida panhandle defended President Trump’s promotion of German Ambassador Richard Grenell to acting director of National Intelligence. “Fifty years ago, a gay man or woman
would not be able to serve in our intelligence community,” Gaetz said. “It is a good thing in this country that we do not ban gay people from being able to patriotically serve in the intelligence community.” Hostin then replied, “Just transgender people.” Gaetz then countered, “We shouldn’t be banning anybody based on who they are and who they love. That’s not the kind of Republican I am, and that’s not the kind of Republican the President is.”

T
he oldest Florida gay rights law — the Palm Beach County Fair Housing Act protecting gays from housing discrimination — recently hit a milestone.
The ordinance was voted into law in 1990 and recently marked its 30th year on the books Jan. 17. Rand Hoch was involved from the start in getting it passed. He also carries the distinction of having been Florida’s first openly gay judge. Hoch is also the founder and president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council. “Florida has always been slower than a lot of states when it comes to gay rights,” Hoch said. He recalls that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, equal rights initiatives had begun to take hold in cities like New York, where gays and other marginalized groups demanded to be treated like everyone else. In 1977, the (then) Dade County Commission passed a gay rights ordinance, making Miami the 40th U.S. city to do so. Its passage prompted a crusade by anti-gay rights activist Anita Bryant, who called for a referendum to repeal the ordinance. “It was an ugly campaign,” Hoch said. “Portraying gay people as pedophiles, it was frightening.” Bryant got her wish later in the year when the referendum passed by an almost 2-to-1 margin.
Hoch said it had a demoralizing effect on Club played a big part. Gay Democrats from the gay rights movement. across Palm Beach County strategized and “It took until the late 1980s for anyone to met. even try to get something done,” he said. At the time, they were facing a county “She did such a number on the minds of commission that was Republican by a 3-toFloridians, even in relatively progressive 2 margin. It was known that the Republicans Miami.” opposed the change and the Democrats In the late 1980s, supported it. Congress made changes to Hoch said the strategy the federal Fair Housing wasn’t so much to gather Act for people 55 and older scores of gays for public to accommodate “adultrallies and try to ram only” communities. through legislation, but “That opened a door, to methodically become because every place that involved in political had fair housing laws that campaigns in order to gain didn’t protect those 55 influence. and over now had to do it,” “We wanted to get to Hoch said. know the people who run Hoch, who was an campaigns and the elected attorney, saw a unique officials,” Hoch said. “To opportunity to be help people get elected.” leveraged. Hoch’s influence would “We figured we could increase, too, with roles get the words ‘sexual as vice chair and chair of - RAND HOCH orientation’ added [to the the Palm Beach County Palm Beach County Fair Democratic Party. Housing Act] to cover “And all of the LGBTQ,” he said. “In sudden once we had reality, we got sexual orientation defined as these connections, we said: ‘Yes, we have ‘homosexuality and bisexuality.’” a gay agenda. To protect people from discrimination,’” Hoch said. THE LONG GAME They decided to keep the pressure on, but keep it as simple as possible. As one might imagine the process took a “We were asking them to put in a couple lot of organization and work — in fact about words and a definition,” Hoch said of the asthree years’ worth. non-threatening-as-possible strategy at the The former Atlantic Coast Democratic time. And instead of going to the media and creating a lot of publicity, they went directly to the county commissioners. “The idea was to simply convince at least one Republican to vote for the new language,” Hoch said. But the media eventually caught wind of the situation, and headlines read “Law to protect live-in lovers,” and things of that sort, Hoch said. So much for flying under the radar — but they stayed optimistic. Two hearings were soon set: a “first reading” and a final vote. Hoch said supporters mostly sat quietly in the first hearing to gauge the opposition, which he said generally fell into two groups. “There were the Realtors who worked in gay areas that were worried about being fined [under the proposed change],” he said. “They thought it was unfair.” Fines for violating the ordinance went up to $50,000. And then there were “the crazies.”
“Florida has always been slower than a lot of states when it comes to gay rights.”

“It was monumental for us. This was breaking the glass ceiling.”
Hoch said the crazies were those who perpetuated the AIDS scare. They essentially had the view that gay people were bad and were going to spread AIDS across Florida if the ordinance was passed. Fortunately, Hoch said, there weren’t many in that group. “We had our people there with buttons reading ‘Housing is a Right, Not a Benefit.’ We had preachers, teachers and lawyers on our side. The other side underestimated our organization,” Hoch said. The day of the final hearing Hoch printed out a list of the many municipalities across the U.S. that had already enacted similar laws to show that what they were trying to accomplish wasn’t a radical idea. “We were demonstrating that if it’s OK to protect gays from housing discrimination in other cities, it’s OK in Florida. That was significant,” he said. When the commissioners cast their votes it was 4-to-1 in favor of the new law. They got two Republican crossovers. “It was monumental for us. This was breaking the glass ceiling,” Hoch said. “It takes a while to build something monumental like this.”
LIFE OF ACTION Hoch had founded the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council in 1988 with Jim Swope in the midst of the campaign for the new law. The group helped do much of the organizing in the runup to the 1990 hearing. It remains very active today, recently launching a gender-neutral restroom initiative in West Palm Beach. Hoch, who has vast political and civic experience, grew up in Massachusetts and moved to Florida in 1978. He was a real estate broker before he went to Stetson University College of Law to be “near a gay beach” in St. Petersburg. Hoch himself said he’d been discriminated against in 1984 for being gay. He was employed by an undisclosed law firm at the time. The
experience was part of what motivated him to get the law changed in Palm Beach County. Hoch had come out to his employer to let them know if there were functions where spouses were invited, he’d like to bring a date if he had one. He said he’d assumed it was OK to be gay at the firm. But a series of events made it clear that the firm thought his sexuality would be more trouble than it was worth. Hoch went on to practice real estate law, labor law and unemployment law, representing unions and workers. In 1992, he became Florida’s first openly gay judge. He did one judicial term in Daytona, representing Volusia, Seminole and Flagler counties.
When the commissioners cast their votes it was 4-to-1 in favor of the new law. They got two Republican crossovers.

AL JACQUET UNDER FIRE FOR USING ANTI-GAY SLUR The fall out continues for the local legislator
Jason Parsley
F
lorida legislator Al Jacquet apologized last week for calling his opponent an anti-gay slur. But the mea culpa was too late and did not go far enough for many Democrats.
Jacquet quickly stepped down as ranking member of the Rules Committee after being roundly condemned by Democrats. The furor erupted when Florida Politics reported on a video that Jacquet had posted to his Facebook page where he called his opponent “batty boy,” a common anti-gay slur in the Caribbean. A day later Jacquet apologized saying “In the heat of the moment, I said something I should not have said. I apologize for my words that have offended some of my colleagues.” But that statement did not quiet the intense backlash from members of his own party. “As a colleague, friend, and fraternity brother to Representative Jacquet, it is my hope that he would understand the impact of what he said,″ Rep. Shevrin Jones, an openly gay Democrat who represents parts of Broward County, told the Palm Beach Post. “There is no room for discrimination of any kind, and I know Rep. Jacquet to be better than the language he used. I call on him to apologize, and hope that moving forward he understands that our words matter.” Another gay representative, Carlos Guillermo Smith, also blasted Jacquet, “Homophobia is toxic and dangerous. Words matter and legislators on both sides of the

aisle should condemn this hateful rhetoric immediately. This is totally unacceptable. I am disgusted.” Jacquet represents Florida House District 88 that spans most of the length of the county from Delray Beach in the south to Riviera Beach in the north. “That’s the union boy. The batty boy, union boy,” Jacquet said on the video about his opponent, Lake Worth Beach Commissioner Omari Hardy. The slur is common in the Caribbean islands where Jacquet was born. Hardy is running against Jacquet in the upcoming Democratic primary in March. “I want to make it really clear that anti-gay language is reprehensible,” Hardy said. “We shouldn’t tolerate it from our elected officials, just as we should not tolerate it from anyone in our lives.” Hardy is not gay, but he was raised in a same-sex household with two mothers. “Anti-gay language is not OK. But there is nothing wrong with being gay. I’m not offended by someone calling me gay even though I’m straight,” he said. “What offends me is this elected official is using hateful language — hateful language that is used to stigmatize people. Trying to weaponize it for his own political benefit.” Hardy did not accept Jacquet’s apology. “The apology he supposedly has issued wasn’t sent to me and he has my cell number,″ Hardy told the Post. “He hasn’t reached out to me at all. I don’t know to whom he was apologizing. When you hurt someone you
(personally) apologize to them.″ Rand Hoch, president of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, said his group has endorsed Jacquet in the past. “While Al Jacquet has never been involved with the local LGBTQ community in a significant way, PBCHRC Voters Alliance repeatedly endorsed him based on his cosponsorship of pro-LGBTQ legislation,” Hoch said. “I sincerely doubt that will ever happen again.” Hardy has been a Lake Worth Beach City Commissioner for three years. Stephen Gaskill, President of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, released a statement. “Rep. Jacquet should know better. Language matters, and has a real-world impact. Rep. Jacquet needs to apologize to Florida’s LGBTQ community for using an antigay slur intended to demean a large segment of his Palm Beach County constituents,” Gaskill said. “The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is in Tallahassee for our annual Lobby Days, and we encourage him to meet with us while we’re here.” The chair the Florida Democratic Party, Terrie Rizzo, also admonished Jacquet. She posted this tweet. “@FlaDemsvalues everyone. Words do matter & hurtful & insulting language has no place in any discourse. I’m glad Rep. Jacquet realized his words were hurtful & apologized. I personally encourage him to reach out to his colleagues & groups who have supported him & make this right.”

Sanders won Nevada with 47 percent of the vote, placing ahead of former Vice President Joe Biden (23 percent) and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (14 percent). The 78-year-old Democratic socialist from Vermont gave his victory speech in San Antonio, Texas with his campaign looking ahead to “Super Tuesday.” “We have just put together a multigenerational, multiracial coalition, which is not only going to win in Nevada it’s going to sweep the country,” Sanders said. The Associated Press reported “nearly

0 Days. 40 days of Holy Time. This is the time during which churches enter the Season of Lent, a time of anticipation, a time of preparation, a time of transformation during which we anticipate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The death and resurrection of our Lord establishes a miraculous transformation. Once, a young person tried to stump his pastor by asking her, “who is the person in the whole world, ever, who had the greatest sin?” The pastor responded, “Jesus Christ.” Through his death Jesus took unto himself the sin of the whole world, dying the death that was, in truth, ours. In his rising, Jesus gives to us the life he himself experienced coming forth from the grave. A New Life. A New Creation. A miraculous transformation from death to life, not only
for Jesus, but for us as well. The gathering of the church for worship reflects this transformation. Always it proclaims Christ’s victory over death and the grave, and new life in God’s kingdom. Indeed, through the lives of worship we catch glimpses of his kingdom. For, we cannot give of ourselves in praise and adoration and not be changed ourselves. Lives of worship become lives of service. The worshipful life is one which seeks guidance from God, submits itself to God’s will, and celebrates God’s purpose for us. A life of worship is one in which prayer is unceasing. The worshipful life is to live the cruciform life of our Lord, the cross-life to which we are each called. During this season of repentance, may the presence of our saving God touch your life and bring to you the joy of God’s forgiveness and new life.

Trixie Mattel experiences an early mid-life crisis in her new show coming to the Broward Center on March 3. Credit: TrixieMattel.com.
TRIXIE MATTEL IS TURNING 30 AND IT’S A CRISIS J.W. Arnold
I
f 50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30, where does that put Trixie Mattel, who is struggling with turning the big 3-0? “I’m too old, too young, 100 and 5 at the same time,” the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” AllStars season 3 winner said. “Am I a grown-up or did I waste my best years?” After some silent reflection, Mattel added, “I don’t feel old, but looks wise, I spent my 20s waiting for myself to visually peak. I either missed it or it didn’t happen. As far as dating and sex, it all changes as you get older, also.” Mattel has been doing drag for a decade and fans have watched her grow on television. “Is doing drag for 10 years something to be proud of or sad about? Everybody else is becoming accomplished in the traditional ways — getting married, having children. When you’re a gay crossdresser traveling the world, there are different benchmarks,” she noted. Mattel certainly hasn’t wasted her time. She’s drawn an international following thanks to her stints with RuPaul and has toured the country three times, performing both in drag and as an accomplished folk musician. She has two businesses and owns that house, just like her straight friends. Mattel is still pretty skeptical about relationships and certainly about marriage.
She’s in a relationship, but the “M” word is not an option…yet. “If I put everything I’ve done on a scale, what does it weigh up to?” she asked. South Florida audiences will get the chance to ponder these questions with Mattel when she comes to the Broward Center on March 3 with her new show, “Grown Up.” In addition to a little group therapy session on the Amaturo Theater stage, Mattel will be performing with a live band on tour for the first time. Her latest album will come out during the 29-city tour. “I’m like a tired old show hag now,” acknowledging that, at 30, she just doesn’t have the stamina for the 60-city tour she last attempted. “The show is a celebration and proves that no matter how tragic or iffy your life may be, you can joke through anything. There’s nothing more universal than getting older.” Mattel has always loved toys and dolls — hence her drag name — and finds them therapeutic with the creative process. But, make no mistakes, her show can get dark, like her Florida audiences. “You all are some damaged people and like dark jokes,” she joked, dismissing her own issues for a moment. “Some drag queen should do a show called ‘Florida Man’.” Suddenly, Mattel’s existential issues don’t seem nearly so tragic.
“Trixie Mattel: Grown Up” will be performed on Tuesday, March 3 at 8 p.m. at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets start at $39.50 at BrowardCenter.org.

MISS RICHFIELD 1981 BRINGS NEW SHOW TO SOUTH FLORIDA J.W. Arnold
M
iss Richfield 1981 is ready for the fight and she’s coming out swinging in her new show, “Below the Belt.” The mild-mannered Midwesterner, who dedicated her career to the amiable citizens and merchants of Richfield, Minnesota (“where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage”), is channeling her inner “Rocky” for her latest comedic romp on March 7 at the Sunshine Cathedral. “It’s really a show, not about conflict, but rather about fighting for what you believe in, standing up for who you are,” said Miss Richfield’s male alter ego Russell King. “Miss Richfield, of course, had to fight to win her beauty title in 1981 and now she’s asking what do we have to fight for in 2020? It’s really a time where we need to think about that. It’s a challenging time.” One of the inspirations for the new show was the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage this August. While marriage equality and many LGBT rights are still new, people forget that it was just a century ago that women won their right to have their voices heard at the voting box. Even those hardfought victories are under attack through voter suppression and anti-LGBT legislation and policies. “I think about our community and the people who need to stand up and be counted,” King explained, “and the boxing theme seemed like it would be appropriate and fun.” King has created new costumes, songs and videos for the show, which he promises will leave funny bones bruised and broken by the final bow. He first explored a love for theater in high school in his native Minnesota. Growing up in a very conservative Christian family, “we didn’t go to theater, it wasn’t part of our experience,” King recalled. In college, he focused on his journalism studies, but the yearning for the spotlight was never quite forgotten. Miss Richfield 1981 made her debut at a Miss America viewing party more than 20 years ago. “We jokingly all came in pageant attire, just as a joke,” King said. Soon Miss Richfield 1981 was performing at local clubs in Minneapolis. One night,

the regular emcee took a break and the microphone was handed to King. Within a few months, Miss Richfield’s performances moved from the bars and clubs to theaters and cabaret rooms. His early act was set as a Christian radio show with Miss “R” as the host. Even his religious family came to accept their gay son’s drag. “It took time, especially for my dad, but he came around and was very cordial and good to my boyfriends. With the drag, again, that took some time for them to adjust. I compared it to Uncle Milty [Milton Berle] or Flip Wilson. It’s not that I want to be a woman, it’s just a fun character, a role,” King emphasized. Within a few years, the performer was headlining Atlantis gay cruises and holding court in the gay summer mecca of Provincetown. Now, she’s one of the top names in an industry increasingly crowded with young stars, thanks to “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” “I’m traveling all year round, all around the globe. This year, I’m working New York City, Fort Lauderdale, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Palm Springs…I’m the official spokesperson for Palm Springs, so I’d better mention them,” he said, breathlessly. King is now contemplating a big move from Minneapolis to Philadelphia, where his boyfriend lives. “I’ve been thinking about relocating, but Miss Richfield will never really leave Richfield. She’s never home, but she’ll always call Richfield home.”
Miss Richfield 1981 presents “Below the Belt” as part of the Outlandish performance series on Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 S.W. 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets start at $30 at OutlandishFL.org.
