Rustin was arrested in 1953 for having sex with another man in a parked car in Pasadena, California. People for the American Way called the pardon “longoverdue.” “Rustin was a person of peace and principle whose unsung leadership within the civil rights movement deserves greater attention,” PFAW President Michael Keegan said in a prepared statement released Jan. 28. “He was undoubtedly harmed during his life by the racist and homophobic climate of the time, and nothing can erase the suffering he endured.” In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

alifornia Governor Gavin Newsom pardoned the late civil rights leader Bayard Rustin on Wednesday. Rustin died in 1987 at the age of 75. He was a leader in the nonviolent movement for civil, labor and gay rights and widely credited for organizing the March on Washington and the Freedom Rides of the 1960s. “In California and across the country, many laws have been used as legal tools of oppression, and to stigmatize and punish LGBTQ people and communities and warn others what harm could await them for living authentically,” Newsom said in a written statement. “I thank those who advocated for Bayard Rustin’s pardon, and I want to encourage others in similar situations to seek a pardon to right this egregious wrong.” Newsom’s clemency program gives a pathway to pardons to LGBT Californians convicted for vagrancy, loitering, sodomy or other laws used to prosecute people for having consensual adult sex. A parole hearings board investigates pardon applications and makes recommendations to the governor, who has sole constitutional authority to grant them.

S
pend Valentine’s weekend learning about relevant topics to the LGBT community, including business, healthcare and wellness, human rights, spirituality, civic engagement, and life planning impacting the community on local, national, and international levels. On Feb. 14 and 15, the 2nd annual 4Ward Americas LGBTQI Human Rights, Business Expo and Life Symposium takes place at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The business expo and life symposium features two days of speakers, workshops, and panel discussions. During the event, attendees will be able to interact with representatives from international chambers of commerce, local government, healthcare providers and advisors, and many other local businesses and organizations providing services and outreach specific to the LGBT community. “The 4Ward Miami Human Rights and Business Symposium is an exemplar of
how human rights issues are a part of every aspect of our lives. It also highlights how the LGBT community is cross-cutting because we are a part of many segments of society in race, class, faith, and gender,” said Orlando Gonzales, Executive Director of the SAVE Foundation. “We have a deep interest in matters of faith, health, and healthcare, business, and entrepreneurship, as well as our deep-rooted tradition of civic engagement and responsibility. Anyone that considers themselves a life long learner, a lover of life, should consider being a part of the symposium’s rich program.” The first day of the expo is Friday, Feb. 14. Events on Friday and Saturday run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets for both days are $125. They cost $90 for Miami Beach residents and $50 for students and seniors. Tickets include lunches and refreshments throughout the event in addition to a closing reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Mayor Pete Talks Being Gay, Chasten and His Historic Candidacy at CNN Town Hall Jason Parsley
C
NN’s Chris Cuomo asked former Mayor Pete Buttigieg at a CNN town hall Thursday night what his win in Iowa should mean for LGBT people that may be watching the show.
Here are a few of the excerpts.
“Everyone’s story is different, but the thing I want people to hear is that it gets better. I would have done anything at a certain time in my life not to be gay and believed that as that reality became inescapable that it might cost, the chance to serve in uniform or in office,” the veteran told the audience. “And here I am now finding that very same fact that I thought might prevent me from having an impact in the world […] it’s actually very much part of the impact I get to have now.” “I mean I’m not running to be the gay President of the United States I’m running to be a president for everybody, but talks about God having a sense of humor,” the former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana said while the audience laughed.“I know right now there’s so many, especially young people, who question whether they fit in their own family, in their community, as they come to terms with who they are. We got a long way to go when it comes to LGBTQ equality right now. But I think the fact that I’m standing here. The fact that my husband’s in the audience watching right now is just an amazing example of that belief that that yes, yes you belong. And this country has a place for you.” Cuomo then asked about his victory speech on Monday night when it appeared he was
going to do very well in caucus, “What did it mean to you to look over at the person you love in that kind of moment and recognize that you actually were where you were?” Cuomo was referring to Buttigieg’s husband Chasten. “I don’t even have words for it especially because I wouldn’t be here without him. When I was a bachelor mayor in South Bend. And honestly, kind of avoiding love, because I wasn’t ready for the consequences. I never understood […] how anybody could possibly hold office, and also have a family, or a spouse. I just couldn’t imagine how you’d have room for both,” the presidential hopeful said. “It’s funny because now I absolutely cannot possibly imagine that without Chasten cheering me on, and also offering brutally honest feedback when I need it, and reminding me of who I am. You know when we had that conversation before deciding to do this. He let me know that he supported me, and he said that he’s all in for this, but, we will always be true to who we are, and our values. And we have to find some joy along the way. He’s been a partner in this whole thing, and I quite simply couldn’t do it without him.” As Buttigieg finished the audience gave him a round of applause.

This Weekend in Fort Lauderdale
Annual LGBT flag football tournament celebrates 10 years Jason Parsley
T
he South Florida Flag Football League is hosting the tenth annual Florida Sunshine Cup this weekend in Fort Lauderdale.
“This tournament is going to be great, it’s our biggest one yet,” said Dominic Grasso, the league’s commissioner. “We have teams coming from all over the country.” Twenty-eight teams will be competing coming from Los Angeles, Denver, Boston, Atlanta and more. More than 400 players will take part along with 30 national referees. Grasso is expecting 500 fans and spectators as well. This year, for the first time, the league is partnering with the Miami Dolphins. Grasso is especially excited about the collaboration. Earlier in the season SFFFL partnered with the Dolphins on their first ever pride event that took place during the Dolphins game against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 17. The Dolphins are also sponsoring the tournament this year and representatives from the team will join the league on Saturday for the opening ceremony. “We are super excited the Dolphins are coming on board to sponsor the Sunshine Cup,” Grasso said. He noted the team is very involved with “social justice activities” especially through their Football Unites program. “It’s superb,” he said. “They really back LGBT causes when it comes to sports by using football as a uniting factor.” On Sunday night during the closing ceremony the league will announce a new collaboration with the Broward County
Public Schools giving them $1,000 for a youth scholarship. “We’re super excited about that too,” Grasso said. This league continues to grow with 10 teams and 100 players competing this season. Below is a complete list of events.

Tuesday’s Angels Close Out 2019 With Three Key

he mission of Tuesday’s Angels changed a bit in 2019, but its resolve to help the causes it cares about stayed firmly in place.
Three groups received their share of $25,000 in December from Tuesday’s Angels via its donor advisory fund through the Our Fund Foundation in Wilton Manors. All three recipients assist, in different ways, those living with HIV/AIDS in South Florida. “We’re really happy we’ve been able to continue to work with organizations we’ve worked with in the past,” Tuesday’s Angels president Mike Ross said. In early 2018, Tuesday’s Angels announced it would dissolve after almost 30 years in operation. Now it distributes monies and donations through its donor fund.

The group — founded by gay men — became well known for a once a month Tuesday dinner in Wilton Manors where a hat was passed around for donations to go to those in crisis due to HIV/AIDS. The group has historically directed its funds to assist those already experiencing the effects of HIV/AIDS. The mission changed in 2019 to include HIV prevention efforts in South Florida through a new HIV/AIDS fund, also administered through Our Fund. The group’s leadership said the new fund was specifically needed to assist efforts to combat the spread of new transmissions in South Florida. The issue is urgent, they said, as the prevalence of new HIV infections in Broward County and Miami-Dade County has risen, even as the rate has plummeted nationally. Both Florida counties have landed at or near the top for new infections since 2014.
Three awardees The first of its final awardees for 2019 was the Children’s Diagnostics & Treatment Center. It received $5,000 for its pediatric dental clinic. While the CDTC has been supported by the group previously, this is the first time funds have been directed specifically to the clinic. The clinic cares for pediatric patients living with HIV. Tuesday’s Angels said the funds are critical because there is a higher instance of dental issues in HIV-positive children compared to their counterparts due to the effects of antiretroviral medications. The second organization to receive funds — $10,000 — was the Pet Project for Pets in Wilton Manors. The nonprofit assists more than 1,650 pets and their financially-challenged owners who are either affected by HIV/AIDS or a terminal illnesses or

disability. LGBT seniors, in general, are eligible for assistance as well. The Pet Project tries to keep pets at home with their owners and out of shelters. Clients receive pet food, supplies and vaccines. If a client is homebound, volunteers will deliver to them. This is the first time Tuesday’s Angels has donated funds to the Pet Project. And finally, SunServe in Wilton Manors received $10,000 for its bus pass program. SunServe and Tuesday’s Angels have teamed up for many years to provide bus passes for transportation to medical appointments for clients affected by HIV/ AIDS.
2020 focus In late 2019, the group announced it would dissolve in five years instead of 10. The accelerated transitionary period will allow more monies from the advisory fund to go out each year, Tuesday’s Angels president Mike Ross said. Ross said Tuesday’s Angels donor advisors are meeting in January to talk about plans for giving in 2020 and to evaluate how things went in 2019. “We’re not sure who is going to approach us [for funding requests],” he said. “We are open to HIV organizations.”

Gay Chili Cook-Off Raises the Temp and Money for Compass’ Youth Group Deon C. Jefferson
C
ompass hosted its eighth annual Gay Chili Cook-off on Sunday. This year’s spicy cook-off was held at Penny’s at the Duke in Lantana. The event featured entertainers, a 50/50 raffle, and eleven sizzling plates of chili.
Compass raised over $5,000 at the event — with the proceeds going toward its youth group. Last year the event raised about $4,000, thanks to the generous and hungry crowd. “We are more than happy to have you this afternoon,” said Compass CEO Julie Seaver. “This happens to be one of the major fundraisers for our Equality Prom, as well as being one of my favorite community events. The support this year has been amazing.” There were 11 different local businesses competing this year. Local gay bars like The Mad Hatter Lounge and H.G. Roosters cooked to win, as well as some new competitors. Other clubs and organizations that participated were Night Runners of WPB, Haus of Quota, and the Rusty Gordon Palm Beach LGBTA Democratic Caucus. This year also saw an influx of individual cooks like travel agent Aaron Kelly, Patty Lucia also known as “Mother Earth,” and David Vancamp of Gator Dave’s Swamp Shack who was representing “Team Everyday People” of Smart Ride. Lantana local Richard Edgerton who debuted his chili last year, returned as he showed off his culinary training with his contribution “A Taste of France.” One of the newest groups to participate
Compass raised over $5,000 at the event — with the proceeds going toward its youth group.

in the cook-off was the Palm Beach County Public Library. John Campbell, who has worked for the library for 11 years was the chef. “I think this event very successful. I was super impressed with the turnout,” Campbell said. “I participated because my daughter is involved with her LGBT organization at her school, so we though this cook-off would be a good way to show our alliance.” His daughter Serenity attends Lake Worth Middle School. “I felt like it was really important for us to be here today,” said the middle schooler. “Even though we’ve seen it die down a little, there is still tons of hate and discrimination towards the LGBT community and trans community. Events like this allow us to spread love and not hate.” Although the chili was hot, the performances warmed the crowd up even more. There were several show-stopping performances by some of Palm Beach County’s most colorful entertainers and drag queens. Audience members enjoyed appearances from Vasti Love Montana, Laila Cox, Tyresha Jones, and Danielle Montgomery. Returning as the show’s host, Melissa St. John not only performed to “Unbreak My Heart” and “Rock Steady,” she also gave the crowd three stunning outfit changes. Last year the performers donated their tips
towards the cause. This year they earned $301 which they donated back to Compass. The returning champs, Mad Hatter Lounge, took home the trophy for first place again this year. Second place went to The Imperial Sun Court of South Florida and third place to the Rusty Gordon LGBTS Democratic Caucus of Palm Beach. “The Mad Hatter took home the award for Tim, one of the co-owners, who we lost last year,” Seaver said. The local bar’s winning pot of chili was by Mareewan Khaland and Michael McLaughlin from Port St. Lucie. It included ground beef, fresh garlic, tomatoes, stew meat, green pepper, sliced onions, kidney beans and navy beans and was served with a shot of tequila. “We also want to take the time to recognize another eight time chili cook-off winner that we lost and that’s PJ Emerson. She was always the first to sign up,” Seaver said. “We miss you guys, and thank you. Even in her death PJ is making an impact. She raised over $600 for today’s event alone.” The Imperial Sun Court’s recipe included Corona, beef, jalapeno, chili peppers and South western spices. Rusty Gordon’s recipe included filet mignon and savory peppers. The money raised from the annual event will go towards the Equality Prom, which Compass hosts in May every year and is free for the students to attend.

his Valentine’s Day … Open your heart and show love. We often don’t notice how blessed we are, or how thankful we ought to be, until what we have is threatened or taken away. It is good and fitting that as Christians, we celebrate gratitude; for God has certainly been good to everyone here; here in South Florida, here in the US. Someone once said that gratitude is the source, the generator, if you will, for all other virtues. If that be the case, then perhaps we can assume that ingratitude may well be the source of all, or at least many of our missteps as well. When we take for granted what God has done for us, we become calloused and unable to fulfill what God has given us to do. For us, every day ought to be a day of thanksgiving. OK, Father … what has this got to do with Valentine’s Day? We need to perceive the ways that God has blessed us. The devil will do her best to
www.christlutheranfl.org
keep our perception from the blessings of life. Satan will constantly tell us how bad we have it, of how everything is wrong in our relationships. You see, it’s when we begin to realize how much we have, that we will truly begin to be thankful, and when we are thankful, our hearts will abound with love that has so graciously been given. This Valentine’s Day don’t just buy someone a valentine! Open your heart, your real heart, the one in you! Thank God for the person(s) who are a part of your life. Even better, thank the person(s) who are part of your life for being a part of your life. Make this Valentine’s Day not one of hearts on cards or chocolates; but THE one when you show the heart that God placed inside you and represent the appreciation for the love that surrounds you on every side. In any way that you can, let those who love you know how much they are appreciated and what they bring to your life. Love. What a blessing! Celebrate it.

Trans Talk
As a Trans Man I Feel Ignored Photo via PxHere.

s a trans man, I feel ignored. I don’t see myself represented in mainstream media. There is hardly any research on trans men. Even in the trans community, transgender often seems to default to trans women. In my current line of work, I’m part of a larger organization working to end the HIV epidemic. One of the priority populations of that epidemic is the transgender community. However, adequate research on the trans community is hard to find but then to find research specifically on trans men and HIV is even more difficult. The Human Rights Campaign’s website states, “Despite several years of research on HIV/AIDS and the populations it affects, we know very little about transgender people and HIV…The few recent studies that consider transgender women (and even fewer that consider transgender men) reveal alarmingly high HIV infection rates.” Even though we’ve been dealing with the HIV epidemic for almost 40 years, we still know next to nothing about HIV and transgender people, and even less about trans men and HIV. Even though I don’t feel represented in the public health world of HIV, I hoped that my own doctors would know about my health issues, but that hasn’t been the case. When I first started HRT in December 2013, my prescribing doctor asked me if I wanted to freeze my eggs first because my eggs wouldn’t be viable after starting hormones and I therefore couldn’t have biological children. I looked into it, but was told it would cost $10,000 to extract the eggs and then $2,000 a year to store them for up to 10 years. After 10 years, the eggs are essentially freezer burnt and unable to be used. I didn’t, and still don’t, have that kind of money so I chose not to freeze them. A few years later when I was consulting with surgeons before my hysterectomy, my wife and I were interested in the possibility of having a biological child together and wanted to speak to a fertility doctor before removing most of my reproductive organs. The fertility doctor told me it was possible for my eggs to be viable to have a biological child but that it wasn’t a sure thing. Ultimately, we decided not to freeze my eggs but instead to leave my ovaries in for the possibility that my
I started a support group specifically for transmasculine individuals and 18 trans guys showed up for the first group.
eggs may be usable if we decided to have children biologically down the road. However, when it came time to consult with the surgeons for the hysterectomy, one doctor told me to leave my fallopian tubes in because it would keep the blood supply to the ovaries and help increase the eggs’ chance of staying viable, while another surgeon said they had never heard of that and told me to remove the fallopian tubes because if I was to get ovarian cancer it could likely start in the fallopian tubes. My doctors didn’t know the best thing for me and they readily admitted that there isn’t enough research on trans men and the effects of HRT on fertility or reproductive organs. The research simply doesn’t exist. It hasn’t just been in the research fields, though, where I haven’t seen myself properly represented. Even in transgender-specific spaces, unless it is specifically geared toward trans-masculine individuals, then the premise is often that it’s for trans women. When I was
an intern in graduate school, there was a transgender support group at the organization I was interning with. Almost every attendee was a trans woman. I didn’t feel like that group met my needs so I wanted to start a support group specifically for trans men. At the time, it was thought that trans men simply weren’t interested in support groups, which is why they didn’t come. But I knew that the men just weren’t feeling heard. So I started a support group specifically for trans-masculine individuals and 18 trans guys showed up for the first group. It’s frustrating to feel like your doctors, mainstream media, and even members of the LGBT community don’t know you at all. We need more representation. I want to see more trans guys in advertisements that isn’t even specifically geared towards transgender people. I want to see more trans men of color in leadership positions. I want to see trans men in discussions about abortion and reproductive justice. There’s room for everyone at my table.

Where to Eat for V-Day Rick Karlin Valentine’s Dinner and a Show at Wreck Bar. Photo via Facebook.
S
econd only to New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day is a time to dine out and area restaurants are offering all sorts of package deals to entice lovebirds. And for those not in relationships, places are marketing “Galentine’s Day” celebrations when girlfriends (one assumes single) gather to celebrate. And if straight men weren’t so intimidated, they’d probably be promoting “Palentine’s Day” events as well.
One of the Galentine suggestions (which I think single gay men should adopt) is to attend the The Aquamen show in the Wreck Bar at B Ocean Resort. The Aquamen shows are held on Thursdays which is Valentine’s Eve. Doors Open at 7p.m., for dinner and drinks, then the show goes live at nine. Or dine at Naked Crab beforehand and enjoy a 5-course meal for $75, a complimentary glass of Moet & Chandon Champagne. For reservations call 954-245-3836 or go to boceanfortlauderdale. com. Valet parking is $5 with dining validation. Death or Glory will have a Galentine’s Day Party on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. Jen from Jen Blossoms Design will help guests make their own fresh flower heart shaped wreath. All supplies, including fresh flowers, are provided. The cost to participate is $65 per person plus tax and includes a special cocktail. Space is limited. Must reserve in advance.

retend it’s happy hour and you and I are sitting at the bar. I look amazing and, I agree with you, much thinner in person. You look good, too. Maybe it’s the candlelight, maybe it’s the booze, either way, let’s just go with it. Keep this all between you and me, and do me a favor? Don’t judge me if I name drop just a little.” That’s the premise for television personality Ross Mathews’ new book and he’s coming to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, Feb. 21, armed with a long list of names to “drop.” Mathews, who first gained notoriety as “Ross the intern” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and more recently sits at the judging table on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” told SFGN, “I love pop culture myself, I always have. I feel like the super-fan who won the golden ticket, so I had an obligation to write this book. I will just tell you that no celebrity was harmed in the making of this tour, but I will certainly tell you the truth.” During the 90-minute show, the seasoned television host will offer a mix of stand-up, readings from the book and an opportunity for audiences to play “Name Drop the Game Show.” In fact, hosting a television game show is one of Mathews’ bucket list items. “I’ve been on television 18 years, since 2001 on ‘The Tonight Show.’ My career has evolved and I’m now on ‘RuPaul’s,’ which won an Emmy two years in a row…I’ve done the book and going on tour…I don’t think a game show is unrealistic,” he said. His celebrity stories are sometimes juicy, but he often just finds the humor in ordinary situations. Mathews, above all, tries to be kind. “Here’s the deal: there’s so much craziness in the world and I’m so tired of it. I just like to get together, shut the door and just laugh,” Mathews explained. Even when he’s not touring, the performer likes to keep busy. “I try to create every day…writing the book,

putting the tour together, potting a plant. I say to myself I contributed that today,” he said with a chuckle. Mathews likes to spend time in Palm Springs and, of course, he’s mastered the “art” of happy hour and he’s actively dating, noting “I’m really good at it.” The 40-year-old is looking forward to his Florida tour stops, in particular. He’s spent a lot of time in South Beach, Naples, Tampa, even the panhandle. “I love Florida,” he said. “It’s a big state and we have more in common than what divides us…We’ll be in Fort Lauderdale and Key West. I’m smart and made sure to schedule it so I’d have a day in each place.” On those days off, you just might find him out at happy hour, too.
Ross Mathews bring his “Name Drop” tour to the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 at BrowardCenter.org.

osé,” the award-winning feature film about a gay teen in Guatemala, opened to critical acclaim in New York and is coming to South Florida this weekend, but its young star will not share in the accolades. The U.S. consulate in Guatemala City twice blocked a visa application for Enrique Salanic to enter the country to promote the film at screenings, citing a “flight risk” because he lives with his parents and has no permanent address in the U.S. Miami filmmaker Robert Rosenberg, representing Outside Pictures, was quoted in TheWrap: “It broke my heart that such a talented young actor like Enrique, who is the star of our movie, is being thwarted in pursuing his career by our own government in the U.S. Our policies should encourage this kind of ambition and success, not trap Central Americans in their countries, as if they were less than human.” Director Li Cheng, who is also gay, is scheduled to address the issue on the Norm Kent Show on WWNN-95.3FM on Feb. 14 and notes the situation perpetuates many of the negative impressions the world has of America. “[The film] is really a page ripped from today’s news headlines,” Cheng said in a statement. “The crises of young people,
single mothers and dark-skinned peoples in Guatemala frames the film’s story. Guatemala has become an increasingly violent and dangerous place, where more than half the people live in poverty.” In Cheng’s story, co-written with George F. Roberson, José is a typical teen — head constantly buried in his phone — struggling to eek out a life with his mother in a dismal slum. He’s not only struggling with poverty and those awkward teen years, he also has a secret. The introverted boy hooks up with men and then lies about his comings and goings. When he meets Luis, a migrant construction worker, José immediately senses a future where he can love and be loved unconditionally. Unfortunately, he struggles with this newly discovered intimacy and retreats to the safety of his mother and their familiar existence. In many ways, Cheng’s film is the stereotypical coming out story that pervades LGBT film festivals, still. But Salanic brings a depth to the character — coupled with the dark setting amid contemporary events — that makes the film still feel fresh and especially relevant. At a time when LGBT immigrants are often lost in the caravans and mass deportations, “José” puts a spotlight on their plight during the darkest of times.
“José” opens on Feb. 14 at Miami-Dade College’s Tower Theater in Miami, the Classic Gateway Theatre in Fort Lauderdale and Living Room Theaters in Boca Raton. Check local listings for show times.

*Breaking Binaries
Saturday, February 15thfrom 11:30 AM — 2 PM at Richter Library, 1300 Memorial Drive, Coral Gables. Breaking Binaries explores the concept of queerness as its own form of writing though a surrealist lens. Through a number of prompts and readings, we will lead participants through the numerous ways in which queering form, the hybridization of form, and cross-genre overlaps can bring about the visibility of queer bodies, thought, and existence in the world. We will focus on concepts of space, time, and accessibility: literally and metaphorically, on the page and beyond. Through this disruption of form, together, we will craft a community space that challenges norms and resists definition. Details and more information at readingqueer.org
