CHINESE COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF TEXTBOOK DESCRIBING HOMOSEXUALITY AS A DISORDER

CROWD STOPS ARREST OF GAY COUPLE IN MEXICO

In China, a court upheld for a second time last week a ruling which said a textbook description of homosexuality as “a psychological disorder” was not a fact error, the South China Morning Post reported. The lawsuit came in 2017 from Ou Jiayong, a 24-year-old woman who sued Jinan University Press who published a book listing homosexuality under “common psychosexual disorders,” and JD.com, who stocks the book, the SCMP reported. The Suqian Intermediate People’s Court in Suqian in the province of Jiangsu, China ruled last week to uphold a previous ruling on the issue, the SCMP reported. Last year the Suyu District People’s Court in Suqian ruled in favor of the publishing house and said the suite

was based on differences in opinion. Jiayong appealed but was unsuccessful against the ruling in November, the SCMP reported. The 2013 edition of “Mental Health Education for College Students,” the book at the center of the lawsuit, is used by multiple universities in China, the SCMP reported.

A crowd stopped police from arresting a gay couple at a Mexico beach Feb. 21, the Independent reported. Local police said the arrests were based on “immoral acts and sexual erotic demonstrations,” in a statement, though no one at the beach witnessed the alleged sexual acts, LGBTQ Nation reported. According to several videos of the incident, people present at the beach shouted “I’m gay too” as police arrested the couple, the Independent reported. Police then released the two men. “The cops behaved VIOLENT, and gave arguments like ‘there are families and children and they can’t be watching this,’” Maritza Escalante Morales, who posted videos of the incident on Facebook, said in a post.

CELEBRITIES ADVOCATE FOR LGBT RIGHTS IN GHANA

TWO PRIDE CELEBRATIONS IN ENGLAND MOVE FORWARD

A group of over 65 people, made up of celebrities, designers and politicians, have called for Ghana’s president and “political/cultural leaders” to “reach out and engage in a meaningful and purposeful dialogue” with LGBT community leaders, according to a statement from March 1. Actor Idris Elba and model Naomi Campbell are among the signatories, according to the statement. The statement comes after Church groups, politicians and anti-gay rights organizations forced the country’s first LGBT community center to temporarily close last week, Reuters reported. LGBT+ Rights Ghana, a local charity, runs the center, Reuters reported. Those who called upon Ghana’s government to close the center also called for those

Two major Pride festivals in England are planning celebrations for 2021, the Guardian reported. Manchester plans to hold its Pride events in person, provided the U.K. government continues to make progress with COVID-19 vaccinations, the Guardian reported. It plans to host a parade, party and concert. Pride in London is exploring in-person events in addition to other options. The organization told the Guardian it would announce final plans “in due course.” Manchester Pride’s concert portion will be reduced to half capacity compared to previous years to ensure health and safety, the Guardian reported. Manchester has planned a virtual festival and some socially distanced events in August as a backup, Mark

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:  Those in the “Most Important Information About BIKTARVY” section.  Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY.  Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY.  Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.  Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.  The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%). These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.

LADY GAGA AND PUPS REUNITED

Legendary pop icon and LGBT advocate Taylor Swift, is showing her support for the new LGBT civil rights bill. The bill was first passed by the Democratic-led house back in 2019, according to the New York Times. Now the house has passed the new and improved Equality Act on Feb. 25, making its way onto the Senate. Swift went to the place notorious for expressing one’s opinion: Twitter. She tweeted, “YES!!! Fingers crossed and praying that the Senate will see trans and lgbtq rights as basic human rights.” Swift is a known ally of the LGBT community. Back in 2019 when Swift opened up for the MTV Music Video Awards, her performaces included and was not limited a “rainbow filled, queer

Gaga’s two French Bulldogs were luckily returned to her by a civilian who is remaining confidential due to the ongoing investigation. Gaga first brought this to everyone’s attention via Instagram, the first of many photos shows the two French Bulldogs sitting on a towel enjoying life while a setting sun turns the sky orange. Her caption reads, “My beloved dogs Koji and Gustav were taken in Hollywood two nights ago. My heart is sick and I am praying my family will be whole again with an act of kindness. I

SWIMMING! DAD TO THE RESCUE

When Jamie Alexander, a dad living in Toronto, Canada, saw his trans daughter struggling to find swim bottoms, he put himself to the test and invented a line of swimsuits for trans children. Alexander’s 11-year-old daughter, Ruby, won’t have any trouble finding a swimsuit anymore. The clothing line was named “RUBIES” after Alexander’s daughter and is here to make sure “Every trans girl has the freedom to be who she is, wherever she is — and to shine,” it says on their website. The RUBIES website states, “Each pair of RUBIES bikini bottoms and underwear features a soft compression that provides worry-free comfort and helps keep everything in place. It’s designed for the beach, the gym, the pool, or the dance lessons — without the slightest compromise in style.” Since RUBIES was created by a regular dad like Alexander, he makes it aware that RUBIES is more than a brand. “We

know firsthand the challenges of transitioning facing both the girls and their families. So we are also here to support: to encourage conversations and share experiences, to connect and make new friends, to give each other courage when we feel a little short on it,” it says on the RUBIES website. In an Interview with CBC Metro Morning, Alexander talked about the struggles of finding Ruby girl clothes to wear in the early stages of Ruby’s social transition. Alexander certainly seems to be gaining traction from his actions, his Instagram is filled with numerous pictures of a smiling and happy Ruby. Not to mention the support and love from other consumers of his product. One post reads, “I was worried they wouldn’t fit, but they’re perfect. Absolutely one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. Certainly made this 22-year-old girl smile!”

ACTRESS SMOOCHES HER WIFE DURING AN AWARD ACCEPTANCE SPEECH “The Silence of the Lambs” star Jodie Foster shared her excitement to be winning a Golden Globe in a personal acceptance speech. As soon as her name was announced as the winner for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Foster leaned over to kiss her wife Alexandra Hedison. She then gave her acceptance speech, which she claimed was unexpected. “I’m a little speechless,” she said. “I just never expected to ever be here again.” Foster was nominated along with four other women, including Glenn Close and Amanda Seyfried. BELOVED CHILDREN’S TOY REBRANDS AS GENDER NEUTRAL

Hasbro announced that it will be rebranding its Mr. Potato Head toys to be called simply Potato Head. While the rebranding received lots of negative feedback, supporters continued to shine through the hate. LGBT advocacy group GLAAD showed its support for the more inclusive rebrand. “Hasbro is helping kids to simply see toys as toys, which encourages them to be their authentic selves outside of the pressures of traditional gender norms,” GLAAD’s Chief Communications Officer Rich Ferraro said. To combat hate regarding the new name of the playset, editor-in-chief at popular toy review site The Toy Insider Ali Mierzejewski put it simply: “It’s a potato.” One twitter user said that there are

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ENDS SUPPORT ON TRANSGENDER ATHLETE BAN CASE

Last year, several cisgender runners filed a lawsuit stating that they had been forced to lose because they competed against transgender runners. Trump Administration showed support of the lawsuit in Connecticut that sought to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports in local high schools. According to NBC News, “Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham and other department officials withdrew Barr’s statement, saying, ‘The government has reconsidered the matter.’” President Biden has been very vocal about his stance on gender identity in schools since his first day on the job. “On his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere,” The Assosicated Press said.

GAY REPUBLICANS DENOUNCE EQUALITY ACT John McDonald

T

he Equality Act does not appear to be equally loved by gay Americans. The proposed legislation seeks to amend federal civil rights laws to provide protections for LGBT Americans in employment, education, housing, credit, jury service, and more. However, not all who fly the rainbow flag approve of its contents. One group, Log Cabin Republicans, opposes the Equality Act. In a tweet, LCR stated, “The so-called ‘Equality Act’ is a dangerous piece of legislation that will do harm to our nation. We opposed previous versions of this bill, and do so again in its current form.” On Feb. 25, the Equality Act passed by a vote of 224-206 in the House of Representatives. Three Republicans — Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and New York Reps. John Katko and Tom Reed — crossed the aisle to vote yea. All Democrats support the Equality Act, including Rep. Ted Deutch (FL-22), who represents Wilton Manors and parts of

Broward and Palm Beach Counties. “Equality is still not guaranteed to all,” Deutch tweeted. “LGBTQ people can be denied housing in 27 states & access to education in 31 states. I’m proud to vote to fix these discriminatory laws & extend protections to LGBTQ Americans, including my proud LGBTQ constituents in South Florida.” Meanwhile, Richard Grenell, the former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, maintains the 2021 version of the Equality Act would only grant “special rights” to individual groups. “We just want to be treated equally,” Grenell, a gay man, told the Washington Examiner while attending CPAC in Orlando over the weekend. “And over the years, we’ve migrated into a group of angry leadership in Washington, demanding special rights. And the attack on the religious community is unacceptable.” Log Cabin Republicans list several reasons for its opposition to H.R. 5, aka the Equality Act. The list includes expansion of abortion, banning of therapy relating to gender dysphoria, destruction of women’s sports, increased risk of suicide, dismantling of religious freedom and federal overreach. The Equality Act, LCR argues, puts transgender rights above rights of gays, lesbians and bisexuals. “Gay, lesbian, and bisexual members of society would also effectively become an ‘extinct species’ under this bill. That’s because it would enshrine the gender identity agenda that is counter to gay rights. For decades, we gays preached to the world that we were

‘born this way,’ and that being gay, lesbian, or bisexual ‘is not a choice,’” wrote LCR member John Paul Moran. In a Facebook post, longtime Equality Florida activist Joe Saunders expressed disappointment with three Miami area representatives. Rep. Mario Diaz Balart (FL25), Rep. Carlos Giménez (FL-26) and Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (FL-27) — all Republicans — voted against the Equality Act. “This was a once in a lifetime vote to add the LGBTQ community to our country’s Federal civil rights laws and they voted AGAINST our community,” wrote Saunders, a former state representative. Saunders said Salazar and Giménez’s districts have many LGBT constituents and a long history of pro-equality representation. “This is outrageous and indefensible,” Saunders wrote. SAVE Executive Director Orlando Gonzales said misinformation is to blame for the South Florida GOP delegation’s flip. “It is critically important that we educate and share with everyone how the Equality

Act embraces freedom of religion,” wrote Gonzales in an email to supporters. “Firstly, the freedom of religion is important to all of us. It is one of our nation’s most sacred and fundamental values. That is why it is already fully protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution, and the Equality Act does nothing to lessen those protections. LGBTQ leaders, activists, and citizens have no desire to undermine existing protections for people of faith under the Constitution or existing laws.” Passed by the House, the Equality Act now moves on to the Senate where it will need 60 votes to be enshrined into law. It is unclear when that vote will happen, but proponents are already gearing up for the fight. “We hope that when the U.S. Senate takes up the bill that Marco Rubio and Rick Scott will recognize the large number of LGBTQ+ Floridians who are watching,” said Stephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, in a press release. “They may have a vote on our rights, but we have a vote on their jobs.”

justice issues are largely unknown by the general populace, and they went largely unmentioned in history books. The organization’s first event was Sept. 18 in honor of the “Atlanta Compromise Speech” that was given by Booker T. Washington in 1895. Allen-Ible said she thought of the idea andI reached out to some local organizations in West Palm such as Soul Fam, Base of Life, and the Time is Now Florida. The planning started with herself and SoulFam, then it branched out to “Rebuild History.” Allen-Ible adds that she can’t take all the credit. “Matt Brown had presented the idea of

The “Rebuild History” movement centers around educating the community on Black American history. Alle-Ible decided to host an expo specifically on historical milestones to celebrate the progress that has been made. Social change does not occur in a vacuum — it happens because the people decide to make change happen. Allen-Ible is able to pair activism with art to bring about new perspectives, change ideologies in a subtle way, and then to use activism to bring about action.

A MAYOR REMEMBERED Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

O

ne year ago, before a pandemic would change our lives forever, the Mayor of Wilton Manors Justin Flippen died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. It was a quiet Tuesday night, and the mayor was on his way to a city commission meeting, chairing the chamber he so dearly loved. A young man with a bright future, he had ridden the rapids of the Delaware River, climbed mountains in national parks he loved, and braved the brutal world of local politics. Sadly, Justin was taken from us unexpectedly, by an enemy none could foresee. So it has been for so many this past year. America built a Space Force, but instead our country and this planet was instead invaded by an invisible pathogen that has spread across continents, to all peoples, everywhere. We have lost so many, all too soon. Every life is precious, but let’s take a moment to recall this community leader, who lived life with a fierce passion and unbridled enthusiasm. Justin Flippen’s life, from his early days in Coconut Creek, to his election as the mayor of Wilton Manors, was measured by adventure and enterprise. “The People’s Mayor” was a friend to all of us, and Wilton Manors has forever named a park in his honor. We can pay him tribute in return by keeping our commitment to civic service one of building foundations and fostering partnerships. Aside from being mayor, Justin Flippen was the tourism project manager for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau and the youngest member of the commission. Reaching out and caring for others was second nature to him. At the time, Scott Newton, our new mayor, stated “Justin was someone who just believed in Wilton Manors. I just can’t believe he is gone. I don’t understand how this happened.” Life does that to you, no matter your station or status. Flippen grew up in Wilton Manors, attended Coconut Creek High School in Coconut Creek and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Justin loved people and politics, living his life every day with grace and guts, high dignity and honorable demeanor. There is no telling

Justin Flippen. Photo via Facebook.

to what he might have achieved. Justin had aspirations that are now forever denied, dreams that can no longer be fulfilled. That is our shared loss. In times like this, be reminded of the words from Blood, Sweat & Tears: “And when I die / and when I’m gone / there’ll be one child born, in this world / to carry on ...” In Justin’s footsteps, future leaders will follow. They will build on hopeful yesterdays to create better tomorrows. It is what we should do, to honor the blessings of our freedom, the breadth of our diversity, the measure of our persons. Though unfairly abbreviated, Justin lived a fulfilling life. He was a member of the Wilton Manors Historical Society, Friends of the Library, the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, and The Pride Center at Equality Park along with numerous homeowner associations. He gave all he could give. If you would honor Justin, find your place in the sun. Carve out a place or forum where your voice is heard; where your contribution is counted. It falls upon us to keep that torch burning brightly in his honor.

Though the business started as a way to work safely and save money for college, Ingersoll’s shop has blossomed into something more. “The purpose of my small business is not only to help raise money so I can go to college but so that I can share my art with the world,” they said. “I’ve always loved jewelry-making but I never really considered making it into something until I started my business.” They also donate 20% of their profits to three main charities: the Trevor Project, the Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network, and the Black Lives Matter Global Network. “As an LGBT youth myself, I know how important it is for other LGBT kids to have a hotline that understands their struggles, so that’s why I decided to donate to the Trevor Project,” they said. Ingersoll decided to donate to the Black Lives Matter Global Network after the protests that took place during the summer of 2020. The donations are taken from the money that Ingersoll makes by selling their products.

“I sell handmade jewelry, from tiny book earrings to citrine and sun charm necklaces, I just love creating adorable designs!” they said. The products in their Etsy shop fluctuate, but Ingersoll says that one product is special to them. “My favorite products that I’ve made are the picnic basket earrings, they’re super simple, super cute, and customizable!” they said. They offer made-to-order products as well so that everyone who visits their shop can have something special for themselves or someone else. Creating and managing a small business is a learning experience for Ingersoll, but they have big goals for the future. “Running my own business has been one grand learning adventure from understanding marketing to tracking inventory to balancing my school and afterschool activities on top of that,” they said. “This year I’m hoping to hit 1,000 sales and save as much money as I can for college.”

You can support this LGBT-owned small business by visiting their Etsy shop or following them on Instagram @enigmadesignco.

ew York has the High Line, a 1.45 mile section of abandoned elevated train tracks that was transformed in a busy park and led to the redevelopment of a long neglected stretch of the city’s west side. Now, Miami has the Underline, a 10-mile urban park stretching from downtown to South Miami and a shady respite below the Metrorail tracks. Last week, the first section opened in the bustling Brickell neighborhood. Adorned with public art by Ximena Caminos of the Faena Hotel and a horticultural design from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, this first phase from Brickell Station to Vizcaya Station is expected to become another iconic Miami destination, along with the Wynwood Walls and Miami Beach art deco district. After completion in 2025, the Underline will span an estimated 120 acres and will include butterfly gardens, dog parks, exercise equipment, basketball courts, a mini-soccer pitch, performance areas, bioswales, and temporary and permanent outdoor art installations. To serve visitors of all ages, Friends of the Underline, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, plans to organize numerous health and wellness, cultural, educational and environmental programs along the stretch. The opening for Phase 1, known as Brickell Backyard, marks a milestone for the fastestmoving project of its size in the country with more than $120 million of the total construction cost already secured, according to the group.

Brickell Backyard already sports a line of domino tables, a community dining table that can seat 50, outdoor ping-pong tables, a basketball court and a community stage for yoga classes, movies and live music. When the remaining eight sections are completed, the Underline will stretch southwest from the Miami River in Brickell to the Dadeland South Station, connecting neighborhoods and hotspots including Vizcaya, Coconut Grove and the University of Miami along the way. “I am inspired by our many supporters and believers who are committed to building a better community while improving connectivity and equitable access to parks and green spaces throughout Miami-Dade County,” said Friends Founder Meg Daly. Daly was inspired to transform the space after a serious accident in 2013. She broke both of her arms while riding her bike, and since she could not drive herself to physical therapy, Daly decided to take the Metrorail near her home and then walk the rest of the way to her appointment underneath the train tracks. As she walked each week, she noticed how wide the corridor was, how cool she felt beneath the shade of the tracks — even in July — and that she was the only person using the space. With the support of the community’s input and world-class design by James Corner Field Operations, a vision quickly developed to transform this unused, overgrown land into a public park and gathering space, Daly said.

The presentation also integrates music, dance, science and history. The webcast is free and will be available for one week. WISHING UPON A STAR

STAR

Sweet Star (ID 639687) was given up by her owner because he lost his home and had nowhere to live with his beloved kitty. Star is 4 years old, and a mere 7.8 pounds. She might be a little shy at first, but give her some time to warm up and she enjoys getting lots of attention and pets. We think Star would love a home where she could have a tall cat tree to climb on and a basket full of catnip toys. Can you make her wish come true and give her the loving home she deserves?
