The Task Force has come under fire for refusing to cancel the event. Earlier in the week after it was announced an attendee had tested positive for the virus Rea Carey, executive director of the Task Force, defended her decision to the Washington Blade. “The Task Force made the most informed decision we could at the time, but understand the sentiment,” Carey told the Blade. “We were working with the most current information about COVID-19 at the time and made a decision based on that. At this point no one can determine when or where individuals during that time period may have been carrying or infected with the virus. We can all agree that what we need
now is to inform each other and support anyone in our community who has been impacted.” The Blade interviewed that attendee, who wished to remain anonymous, telling the newspaper that many of his friends, who also attended the event, were experiencing flu-like symptoms. It’s unclear if these men were a part of the same group of men the Boston Globe interviewed. Carey said precautions were undertaken at the annual festival to protect attendees, which included comprehensive signage with CDC information about practicing good hygiene and making alcohol-based hand sanitizer available throughout the event.

ow the Boston Globe is reporting four more have tested positive with two others exhibiting symptoms of the virus, which include chills, sweats, fatigue, and shortness of breath. “All six have shown the exact same symptoms at different times. So everyone in the household got it for sure — I am 100 percent confident; it’s too coincidental,” one of the men, a 30-year-old doctor living in Boston, told the Globe. “The fear, though, is a lot of them were actively enjoying their social life [before they felt sick] . . . going to bars, going to dinners, going and hanging out at friends’ houses, quarantining with friends.” The six men, a group of friends, who met in Miami to attend the Winter Party together came from all over the country — Seattle, Denver, Boston, and Washington, D.C. “You need to self-quarantine now. I can’t stress it enough. I’ve never been so angry about people not following the rules,” the doctor said. “There’s just no way to prevent this from getting to every corner of the country unless you self-quarantine.”

roward Sheriff Gregory Tony announced last week the Broward Sheriff’s Office would stop serving eviction notices “for as long as needed,” due to the uncertainty the spread of the coronavirus may bring. “This is a difficult and uncertain time for everyone in our community, and we want to ensure residents have a safe place to stay, focus on being with their families and stay healthy in order to slow the spread of the virus across Broward County,” Tony said. “No one should have to worry about losing their home during this pandemic.” This move comes as more of Broward County, and the country, shuts down in order to stop the spread of the virus. As bars and restaurants are forced to close many workers are losing their paychecks. Those workers may find some relief if the federal government passes a stimulus package that includes cash payments to Americans, an idea that’s being floated by

some Democrats and Republicans. Tony also posted a video message on Facebook reassuring residents his office is ready to meet the challenge of coronavirus pandemic. In the video he warns scammers may try to take advantage of the crisis. “I urge the public to be vigilant of scammers who are trying to exploit this situation from phishing emails to fake charitable causes criminals are trying to cash in on this epidemic,” he said.

n Tuesday a coalition a national restaurant chains came together to launch “The Great American Takeout,” an initiative to get Americans to order food to support the struggling food industry as the fallout from the coronavirus continues. Their message: we’re still open for business. Many dining establishments are only open for takeout or delivery across the country as many locales are under mandatory shutdowns. While the idea was launched by a coalition of national restaurant brands including California Pizza Kitchen, Jason’s Deli, and Panera Bread local businesses are hopping on board as well. “I think it’s awesome. We shared it,” said Glen Weinzimer, co-owner of Bona Italian Pizza on Wilton Drive. “We’ve encouraged people to support any local restaurant in our area. Spread the wealth.” Weinzimer is also encouraging people to buy meals for a couple of days “so you don’t have to keep running out.” Bona is offering a special Tuesday, a large cheese pizza, fried mozzarella sticks and two liters of soda for $19.99. Bona, like most restaurants, has taken a big hit. When they first closed their dining room

they started with a staff of eight. Today it’s down to four. “We are trying to keep people on,” he said. But he admitted it’s been a challenge. Weinzimer said he’s brought some people in for special projects like deep cleaning the light fixtures, air vents, and washing down the walls. “This is stuff we don’t always get to,” he said. The restaurant is ready to reopen as soon as they’re allowed to do so. “All the dishes, platters, etc. have been rewashed and ready to go. Everything that was in open air has been sealed.” Weinzimer said closing the dining room is having a ripple effect on other businesses as well, such as his linen company which they no longer need to use. He’s encouraged though that many people still seem to be in “good spirits.” “People are really kind and respectful,” he said. “Customers are tipping generously, as if they were dining in. They’re tipping 30 percent, if not better in most cases.” Weinzimer decided that Bona will take a portion of the tips each day and split them among the whole staff, even the ones not working in order to funnel some money to employees who have also taken a financial hit during this crisis.

olunteers are needed for a South Florida organization that provides food, services and basic living essentials. Poverello is in need of volunteers to deliver groceries to its vulnerable and sick clients. Chief Executive Officer Thomas Pietrogallo, in a video request, said Poverello serves around 2,000 clients living with HIV. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, Pietrogallo acknowledged these are difficult times. “We really need your help in getting ready for what may be a difficult time for all of us,” Pietrogallo said. Operating out of its Wilton Manors facility, Poverello provides food, exercise and a spacious thrift store to its clients and the public. Pietrogallo said his organization would train volunteers to deliver groceries in a safe way. “We want them to be able to safely receive their food in their homes and we’d really like to see more volunteers in that pursuit,”
Pietrogallo said, adding in previous times of crisis the community came together to ensure needs were met. To volunteer, call 954-561-3663.

e Christians quote Jesus often: “Love One Another.” But — we often say it with reservations. After all, we believe that “Love one another” applies only to those immediately around us, those who are the “another” in the quote are our families, friends, our “tribe,” those who are like us. We feel the freedom, the justification to be ambivalent, even filled with hate, toward others. Thus, for LGBTQIA folk, we love and protect others like us but sometimes demean those who are not, just as others have treated us over time. Most of us have been in situations with others where we feel uncomfortable and that could be based on ethnicity, gender, race, language, and a whole host of other things. So sometimes we say or do things that may not be so “Love Others” in spirit. Things like showing disdain for someone, making snide or catty remarks or dismissing some group of folks outright. You know all of the examples I could list. Maybe it is time to broaden our outlook. Even though, with the availability of marriage, we have moved closer to the inside, as outsiders, we have the perspective to empathize with other outsiders. Let’s make a concerted effort to encourage that empathy in ourselves and in those around us. Maybe it is time for all of us to let down some barriers.
Think about: Getting to know someone of a different race — not just to speak to at work, but to really try to understand that person.
We are suspending church services through the end of March. Then we will decide how to proceed on a weekly basis per CDC, federal & state guidelines. We will live stream our service at 10 AM Sunday at: https://www.facebook.com/ ChurchofOurSaviorMCC. Visit our website for more details & updates.
Again, there are lots of examples. The point is that “Love One Another” needs to be broader for all of us. We need to work to understand those whom we perceive as “different”. We need to step out when we see another group being pushed away, treated as the “other”. We are called to love, not just emotionally, but through our actions. Think about what loving one another means to you, then act. You willfind that it is worth it. And — we will be blessed along with those around us.

Find a way to make a material difference. There are lots of options from donating monetarily to your favorite charity to actually giving some of your time to that charity. For instance, at Church of Our Savior, each month we collect different items for the Community Caring Center of Boynton Beach: school supplies, portable food, underwear (because folks get lots of lightly used outerwear but often have no underwear), food, especially for the holidays, and so on.

CONVICTIONS
THE DAWN OF DISASTER PRESIDENT FAILS TO RISE TO THE OCCASION
x Right: Donald Trump. Credit: Gage Skidmore, via Flickr. Left: photo via Pixabay.
Norm Kent
norm.kent@sfgn.com
L
ast night, I found out from the President of the United States I am living life in the expendable lane. I am sorry, but my brother’s factory in Hialeah just needs to put his 250 workers back to work. Don’t worry, Richard. I am sure you will make a great personal representative for my will. In case I do not make it through the coming apocalypse, I just have one simple question I want you to ask at my funeral: “How the hell did we build a world where we could send a man to the moon in 1969, but not have enough respirators for men on Earth in 2020?” A host of epidemiologists are saying publicly that the viral pandemic can potentially infect almost 80 percent of our citizens. That is four out of five, and the mortality rate for those of us who hit the wrong buttons for the underlying conditions could be as a high as 90 percent. Anybody out there want to take over my fantasy baseball team? Oh wait, there will probably be no baseball this year. Well, maybe I am wrong. When Donald Trump said on Monday the cure is worse than the disease, he was telling us he is not shutting down America for more than a week or two. I guess those 20,000 in hospital beds dying in a tent in a stadium without ventilators will just have to be moved to the sidelines before kickoff. Play Ball! The show must go on. The country will carry on, without me, you, or any of our friends. All of us are expendable. Laura Nyro told us that when she was a 17-year-old songstress and penned the words Blood, Sweat, and Tears would make famous: “And when I die / and when I’m gone / there’ll be one child born, in this world / to carry on / to carry on.”
The President reminded us people die from the flu and car accidents, and if you happen to die from corona, so be it. You are an acceptable casualty. It’s a war and we are all expendable. Sorry, Matilda. If you are lucky enough to still be standing after all this over, do your life a favor. Get in the game. Do not stand on the sidelines. Hold authority accountable. Do not acquiesce to apathy or settle for mediocrity. Make the world a better place for you having been there. “If the road is unpaved,” I wrote last week, “pave your own road.” Find your north star and follow that dream. Like Smokey the Bear told us as little kids when we were watching cartoons, only you can prevent forest fires. When you stop by my tombstone, let me know how that trilliondollar stimulus package worked out for all of you. Let me know if they built any respirators with that money. I heard we could use some here in the states. Email me at “i-would-rather-be-atthe-ballpark.com.” Let me know, too, how that great celebration works out after we declare victory in this war; if Donald Trump is waving from a limousine on a NASCAR race course. Personally, I think the man in the White House is eminently unfit and emotionally unqualified to hold the job. Every day that he takes the podium he demonstrates he has neither the temperament or disposition, the grace or dignity, to do the job. But boy, can he get those big corporations and Mike Pence to kiss his ass. Weigh his words that he takes no responsibility for what happens against the concrete recognition Harry Truman had for
I GUESS THOSE 20,000 IN HOSPITAL BEDS DYING IN A TENT IN A STADIUM WITHOUT VENTILATORS WILL JUST HAVE TO BE MOVED TO THE SIDELINES BEFORE KICKOFF.

the duties of the Oval office when he said: “The buck stops here.” Trump is in the kitchen but can’t stand the heat; can’t even handle a tough question from a legitimate reporter. It’s shameful. It is he who is sad, the president who is an embarrassment. Speaking daily on CNN, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has demonstrated what leadership is, what it is like to have guts and grace under pressure. The Democratic party and America have a new hero to look up to, and Andrew Cuomo is his name. Joe Biden, if you want to do America a favor for tomorrow, step aside today. In Andrew Cuomo, we have a world class leader to take down Donald Trump in November. He is not a temporary filler. He is our future. If this were a reality TV show, Donald Trump would have been fired from his job a
long time ago. If he saw this pandemic coming by shutting down travel from China, why did he do so little afterwards to alert America to the dangers? Can’t have it both ways. This pandemic did not begin in China, though. It began when America elected Donald Trump. Right now, though it does not matter if you can’t stand the guy. He is piloting a plane we are all flying on. Republican or Democrat, atheist or evangelist, we need him to land it safely. Then take him to a rubber room somewhere. “These are the times that try men’s souls” are the words of an early American patriot, Thomas Paine. As we try to get through this stress together, find a way to help a neighbor, support a friend, aid a first responder, and rise in service to your community and our country. The life you save may be more than your own.

his social distancing thing has been hard on everyone, especially the hospitality industry. Thankfully restaurants have been able to remain open, even if the dining rooms are closed. Most places are offering the option of pick-up or delivery and that’s a great way to support your favorite small businesses during this time. Forego the chain restaurants, which will be able to survive this interruption in business and support your favorite neighborhood business. I’ve done a little bit of research and here’s what your favorite places are doing to cope with this crisis. Unless otherwise indicated, delivery is available from third-party companies such as Grubhub, Delivery Dudes, Postmates, Uber Eats and the like. We tried to contact every restaurant in Wilton Manors, but many did not answer phone calls or emails in time for our deadline.

A&E ENTERTAINMENT
10 THINGS TO DO WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING J.W. Arnold
J
ust two weeks after public health experts recommended “social distancing,” schools closed and the governor shuttered bars, restaurants and nightclubs to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), South Florida residents are already confronting the isolation that comes with sheltering in place. Here are 10 suggestions to combat the monotony and boredom that inevitably will arise:
1
NURTURE YOUR GREEN THUMB
Need an excuse to get some fresh air? Spend some time in the garden and stock your bar. Jodi Helmer’s new book, “Growing Your Own Cocktails, Mocktails, Teas & Infusions: Gardening Tips and How-To Techniques for Making Artisanal Beverages at Home” shows what leaves, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and roots to grow so you can enjoy them in a refreshing, brand new way. While you’re there, plant some vegetables in case the local Publix gets cleaned out by the starving masses, and avoid any “herbs” that might lead to a police raid.
2
GET LOST IN A GOOD BOOK
We’re currently reading “Dancing Man: A Broadway Choreographer’s Journey,” the autobiography of Tony Award-winning choreographer, director and producer Bob Avian. Over a career spanning six decades, Avian collaborated with legendary choreographer and director Michael Bennett, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh. A gay man who calls Fort Lauderdale home during the winter, Avian tells all and pulls no punches. Available at Amazon.com and other booksellers.
THANK GOD FOR NETFLIX (AND AMAZON VIDEO AND HULU AND CBS ALL ACCESS), BUT RIGHT NOW WE’RE ESPECIALLY THANKFUL FOR NETFLIX AND ITS SPANISH MURDER MYSTERY SERIES “TOY BOY.”
22

3
BINGE WATCH A NEW TELEVISION SHOW
Thank God for Netflix (and Amazon Video and Hulu and CBS All Access), but right now we’re especially thankful for Netflix and its Spanish murder mystery series “Toy Boy.” The 13-episode saga of Hugo, a male stripper wrongfully imprisoned for murdering his lover’s husband, is an addictive mash-up of “Magic Mike,” “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Dynasty.” It’s campy and kinda predictable, but the ripped man candy more than compensates. You’ll definitely fall for Jairo, a gay hustler with a heart of gold. Watch at Netflix.com.
4
TAKE A CLASS
Have you always wanted to learn a foreign language? Well, here’s your chance. Purchase
a Rosetta Stone lifetime subscription and the company is making its entire catalog available. Within six or eight weeks, you could speak eight languages just like Pete Buttigieg! Get three months of one language for $11.99 or the unlimited plan for $199 at RosettaStone.com. If cooking is more your thing, Antoni Porowski from Netflix’s “Queer Eye” has launched a cooking tutorial series dubbed “Quar Eye: Cooking Lessons in Quarantine.” Watch the entertaining 10-minute videos, posted daily, at Instagram.com/Antoni.
5
APPRECIATE SOME ART
If you’ve ever tried to see the Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in person, then you know that massive crowds and long lines await. But not in the era of coronavirus! Take a virtual tour of the world’s greatest museum without the hassle at Louvre.fr. You can also admire Michaelangelo’s masterpiece on the ceiling
A&E ENTERTAINMENT of the Sistine Chapel at MuseiVaticani.va. And don’t forget the antiquities in the British Museum at ArtsAndCulture.Google.com/ Partner/The-British-Museum.
6
VISIT A PARK… OR A THEME PARK
If gardening wasn’t your thing, you can still commune with nature. Tour one of our nation’s most famous natural environments, Yosemite National Park in California, at VirtualYosemite.org. Or, watch Old Faithful erupt on a virtual tour of Yellowstone National Park at NPS.gov/Yell/Learn/ PhotosMultimedia/VirtualTours.htm. If a theme park is more your speed, Jezebel.com offers virtual rides on some of Disney’s most beloved rides, including Space Mountain, It’s a Small World and more — no FastPass required!
7
BROADWAYHD, A PAY STREAMING SERVICE THAT COSTS $8.99 A MONTH, IS CURRENTLY OFFERING A FREE SEVEN-DAY TRIAL.
CATCH A SHOW
Broadway may be dark, but theater fans can enjoy a good show thanks to BroadwayHD, a pay streaming service that costs $8.99 a month, but currently is offering a free sevenday trial. Watch both previously released and televised classics such as “Cats,” “The King and I” and “The Sound of Music,” plus filmed performances of more recent shows, nearly 300 titles. For opera fans, the Metropolitan Opera is streaming different operas from its Live in HD series each night at 7:30 p.m. The operas will be live on the Met Opera homepage, MetOpera.org, for 20 hours.
8
SUPPORT LOCAL PERFORMERS Local cabaret and drag artists are being especially hit hard by the closure of local gay bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Popular cabaret singer Jennifer McClain has taken to Facebook Live for both impromptu and formal sets and the always entrepreneurial Nicole Halliwell has assembled her girls for live streaming shows on March 25 and 27 at QuarantineQueens.net. Check out your favorite local bars on Facebook to see what entertainment they have planned and don’t forget to tip those starving artists using PayPal or Venmo.
9
With the advent of smart phones, it’s still shocking to enter a bar only to discover everyone staring down at their shiny screens, instead of enjoying the videos or, God forbid, talking to one another! Now that the bars are closed, here’s the obvious fix: organize a virtual happy hour with your friends and family on the video conferencing app Zoom. Everybody makes a drink at home and then dishes together on their phones or laptops. It’s easy to use and the basic subscription is free at zoom.us. 10
