PUTIN DEFENDS J.K. ROWLING’S TRANSPHOBIA ‘Harry Potter’ Author Claps Back

J

.K. Rowling fired back at Vladimir Putin after he compared the backlash she received due to her transphobia to the West “trying to cancel Russia.” In a tweet she posted March 25, the “Harry Potter” author said critiques of “cancel culture” are “not best made by those slaughtering civilians.” “Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics,” she tweeted along with the hashtag #IStandWithUkraine. She also posted a link to a BBC News article about jailed anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny and denounced the invasion of Ukraine, CNN reported. The backlash Rowling received was about her transphobic views when they first came to light in June 2020 after she linked to an article on Twitter titled “Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 for people who menstruate,” and wrote “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” She more recently claimed “innumerable gay people” have been saying that trans rights are “undermining” women’s rights. Putin, Russia’s president, accused the West of discriminating against everything that is related to Russia, without presenting any evidence, during a video conference with cultural figures, according to CNN. He then compared the West’s treatment of Russia to

the backlash Rowling received in the past for her views on trans people. “J.K. Rowling has recently been canceled because she ... did not please the fans of the so-called gender freedoms,” Putin said. “Today, they are trying to cancel a whole 1,000-year-old country, our people. I am talking about the increasing discrimination of everything related to Russia, about this trend which is unfolding in a number of Western states.” Putin has cast himself as a “flag-bearer for conservative cultural values” and railed against equal rights, according to CNN. Russia has faced international condemnation over his invasion of Ukraine. Putin has also compared the current situation with Russian culture in the West to censorship in Nazi Germany.

“Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov are excluded from posters, Russian writers and their books are banned,” Putin said, without presenting any evidence as CNN reported. “The last time such a massive campaign to destroy unfavorable literature was carried out by the Nazis in Germany almost 90 years ago.” Rowling launched a fundraising appeal the day after Ukraine was invaded. She said her children’s charity, Lumos, has been working with the Ukrainian government since 2013, according to CNN. “A reminder: I will personally match all donations to our emergency appeal, up to £1million [$1.3 million]. If you’re able to, you can donate [at wearelumos.org]. Again, thank you so very much to all who’ve already donated,” Rowling tweeted.

COURT OF APPEALS APPOINT LESBIAN JUDGE

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted 52-42 to appoint Alison Nathan to the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, making her the second LGBT woman to serve on a federal appeals court. The vote was mainly split by party line but Republicans Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, and John Kennedy voted in favor of her appointment. Nathan was nominated by President Joe Biden off of a recommendation from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. When asked about her ability to serve if given this promotion she said that those who wish to better understand her need only look at her record of more than 3,000 cases. She also cited the late justice John Paul Stevens, after whom she models herself.

TALENT AGENT SEEKS TO CAST TRANS ACTORS ON A GLOBAL SCALE

Ann Thomas, the owner of America’s first transgender talent agency, is determined to increase the number of trans actors in Hollywood. The goal for Transgender Talent is to reach global domination. Thomas wants trans representation outside of places where it is already accepted in order to reach international audiences so that every corner of the world can see real-life trans people. “I realized there is no way for Hollywood to find us,” Thomas said. “So that’s when I created the company. Because we needed a safe place for transgender people to go and list with. By that time, I had heard a mountain of horror stories about bad experiences in Hollywood from people who tried to get into it.” Right now, she’s focused on casting trans actors into cisgender roles to ensure they are attached to big projects. “The thing is that we have to go to the lowest common denominator of what’s

acceptable on global screens,” she said. “We’re not to the point where we can shove transgender stories [down] people’s throats.”

MISSING LGBT ADVOCATE FOUND DEAD IN ILLINOIS Elise Malary, 31, was a pillar in her community because of her LGBT advocacy and activism in Chicago. Her family reported her missing on March 11 after a few days of no communication with her. Almost a week later, her body was found on the shore of Lake Michigan. The Cook County medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy but has not yet confirmed her cause of death, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The police hadn’t previously suspected foul play. “The loss of Elise Malary is heartbreaking,” Gov. J. B. Pritzker said in a statement on Twitter. “My heart goes out to all her loved ones, as well as all of Illinois’ transgender community.” Malary was involved with the Chicago Therapy Collective, an organization

focused on the mental health of the trans community. “She’d speak out on behalf of any issue that impacted women of color, LGBTQ folk — her heart’s so big,” said Iggy Ladden, who also works with the Collective. Her friends said Malary had a “profound influence” on the lives of the people around her. Anyone with information can contact detectives at (847) 866-5040.

SUPERINTENDENT PULLS 130 LGBT BOOKS FROM LIBRARIES IN TEXAS Jeremy Glenn, superintendent of the Texas Granbury Independent School District, met with librarians in January. A recording obtained by the media found that he made anti-LGBT remarks to the librarians and told them if they aren’t conservative, “You better hide it.” “This audio is very much evidence of anti-LGBTQ and particularly anti-trans discrimination,” said Kate Huddleston, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. Since the meeting, 130 books about gender and sexuality have been removed from the shelves, according to the Advocate. It is one of the largest book removals in the country, and about 75% of the books pulled feature LGBT issues or characters. Because of Glenn’s comments and

actions, one non-binary student, Lou Whiting, said they’ve been afraid to report the harassment from other students out of fear that administrators won’t take their claims seriously. And teachers are now afraid of retribution for any personal views that don’t align with Glenn’s. “I don’t feel incredibly safe or welcomed by a large majority of the students at my school,” Whiting said.

UTAH PASSES ANTI-TRANS SPORTS BILL An anti-trans bill was voted on and passed through the Utah Senate and House of Representatives. But Gov. Spencer Cox vetoed the bill as he had previously promised to do. However, the state legislature overturned Cox’s veto. It is officially passed and will be in full effect on July 1, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Cox didn’t reject the bill on principle — he still believes there should be legal protections for “the integrity of women’s sports.” He vetoed the bill because he thought it would bring lawsuits and “likely bankrupt the Utah High School Athletic Association and result in millions of dollars in legal fees for local school districts.” Leaders in Texas, Alabama,

Mississippi, and Iowa have all passed similar anti-trans laws. There were only two Republicans in the Senate who voted against the veto override and one was Daniel Thatcher. He acknowledged that his vote could cost him his seat. “How can I uphold my oath to defend the constitution by voting for a bill we know is unconstitutional?” Thatcher asked. “It’s political theater, because we won’t get any of the benefits but all of the harms.”

SUPREME COURT REJECTS BISEXUAL LAWYER’S CASE Matthew Woods, a bisexual lawyer, is suing a Seattle-based Christian organization after they refused to hire him. The Supreme Court declined to hear the case but decided it won’t intervene as it goes through lower courts. While this case was rejected, Supreme Court justices say that “the day may soon come” when they hear a case addressing similar issues, Oregon Live reports. Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission is an organization supporting the homeless and those suffering from addiction. In 2016, they were looking to hire an attorney to help in their legal-aid clinic. Woods had volunteered there for years before he applied for the position. Woods is part of a same-sex couple and therefore was rejected from the position because the organization’s “code of

conduct excludes homosexual activity.” One judge initially rejected Wood’s case saying that the Union Gospel Mission was exempt from state antidiscrimination laws. But the Washington Supreme Court reversed the decision, allowing the case to go forward. The lawsuit will question whether the religious organization’s legal aid clinic is exempt from Washington’s antidiscrimination laws.

SURVEY ON LGBT ISSUES IN SINGAPORE GETS OVER 30,000 REPLIES

TIKTOK SHADOWBANS LGBT TERMS IN GERMANY

When REACH’s government survey on lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and trans issues closed, it received more than 30,000 replies. This greatly surpasses the average amount of answers, which generally varies from a few hundred to several thousand, according to a representative for the Singapore government’s feedback section. Those who attempted to view the link shortly after it was closed were greeted with a notice stating that REACH had discontinued the survey owing to “an overwhelming response.” According to Channel News Asia, the survey gained popularity on social media, with well-known LGBT activist organizations, such as Oogachaga and Pink Dot SG, urging people to participate. “We thank the respondents that have

participated in our e-Listening Point, and we will share their feedback with the relevant agencies,” the spokesperson said. “Your feedback will be shared with relevant agencies and could be used within the Government for policy updates and changes.”

The popular social media app TikTok has been using a problematic wordfiltering technique in Germany. According to DW, the popular Chineseowned social network has been censoring messages that contain German-language terminology pertaining to Nazis, LGBT culture, and tennis player Peng Shuai. Words like “porn” and “sex” were censored, ostensibly to keep kids safe. However, words such as “gay,” “queer,” “LGBTQ” and “homosexual” were also blocked. Users were able to submit the problematic terms, but they were hidden from others in a method known as shadowbanning. Previous investigations have revealed that TikTok has banned phrases that are considered subversive or contentious

LGBT ISSUES IN NAMIBIA ARE STILL DIVISIVE

VENEZUELAN SAME-SEX COUPLES STILL WAITING FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

At a panel discussion, Charles Moore, the British high commissioner to Namibia, said LGBT issues are “deeply emotive, and often divisive, across the world.” The Diversity Alliance of Namibia hosted the panel discussion titled “Changing Hearts” in Windhoek. When it comes to LGBT issues, Moore said that strong religious, cultural, and communal convictions must be considered. According to The Namibian, Moore stated that the United Kingdom and many other countries feel that basic equality for all human beings is worth fighting for, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation. According to Moore, Namibia has an exceptional constitution that should be the envy of many African and international governments.

“It’s fine to not like, even to find it distasteful, if that’s what you have been brought up to believe. But it’s not fine to discriminate against those who do have a different sexual orientation or those who are disabled, just like it’s wrong to discriminate against people of different tribal backgrounds, nationalities or color,” Moore said.

Elena Hernáiz and Ana Margarita Rojas have been married for almost three decades and have a son together. When they speak to each other as “mi esposa” — “my wife” — their neighbors in Venezuela’s capital know them as a couple and never question them. Their social acceptability, on the other hand, does not imply legal acknowledgment. Venezuela is one of the few South American countries that still prohibits same-sex weddings. Despite the fact that Venezuela’s top court has had seven years to decide on a significant issue, and President Nicolás Maduro has requested parliament to take the subject into consideration, this is the situation. According to ABC, couples and activists are now wondering if a country engulfed in political, social, and economic turmoil

SOUTH FLORIDA CELEBRATES TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY John Hayden At a time when the trans community is a political punching bag and often marginalized even within the LGBT community, South Florida is a place for trans people to be louder and prouder than ever. Thursday, March 31, is Transgender Day of Visibility. The world honors the achievements of trans people and showcases their work towards equality. Hamburger Mary’s is hosting a night of food, entertainment, and creativity. Transinclusive Group is organizing the event to highlight the resilience and talents of the local trans community. The night will include performances of spoken word, singing, poetry, dance, drag, music, and more. “We ask that our allies continue to stand in solidarity and support our efforts so all transgender and LGBQ+ individuals can achieve their human potential equally and

They are producing the event along with many other community leaders, including community partners including Arianna’s Center, The McKenzie Project, TransSOCIAL, FLUX (AHF), Midland Medical, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, The Pride Center at Equality Park, SunServe, and The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council.

fter just more than a year on the job as SunServe’s Director of Development, Terry Dyer is leaving the organization. His last day is Friday, April 1. “I joined SunServe during a transitional period, especially during COVID,” Dyer said. “The goals were to develop strong community partnerships, re-establish the connection and presence to the community, and fund development.” Dyer’s departure is the latest change at SunServe. Over the past year the organization has seen a new executive director as well as several new board members come on board.

DESPITE A BRIEF TENURE, DYER SAYS HE BELIEVES HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS WILL HAVE A LASTING IMPACT ON THE ORGANIZATION AND SOUTH FLORIDA.

Despite a brief tenure, Dyer says he believes his accomplishments will have a lasting impact on the organization and South Florida. “It truly takes a village to support our community at all levels. We will always be stronger in numbers. It is my hope that I will be remembered for accomplishing those goals.” Since moving to South Florida to work at SunServe, he has become a face of the community, promoting fundraisers and local theater including appearances in productions. Dyer will still be around, as he’s taking over as executive director at the World AIDS Museum (WAM). “I did not make this decision lightly as I also love SunServe’s mission. It has helped to prepare me for this next role. At the museum we are excited about the future ahead, reaching new audiences, and collaborating with organizations nationally.” The official announcement of his new position is expected next month, and SFGN will talk with Dyer about his vision for the next chapter at WAM. In a statement to SFGN, SunServe wished him the best. “SunServe is very happy for Terry’s new opportunity and we wish him well in his endeavor with the World AIDS Museum.”

legislation in the country” for schools and their libraries. “This is going to be a really significant win for parents in the state of Florida,” DeSantis claimed. Parents can now object to material that “deviates from state standards” or is “inappropriate,” citing “really graphic stuff” that kids have access to, even in middle school. Alicia Farrant, who is running for the Orange County School Board and spoke at the signing, described one LGBT memoir as a “disturbing pornographic book,” according to the Orange Observer. The book in question was “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe. On March 22, Dan Kois interviewed the author about the memoir and what is now being deemed “inappropriate” in books. “I’ve always had this philosophy as a parent, based on the books that I read as a child, which did skew very heavily toward the ‘inappropriate,’” Kois said. “The philosophy is, there really is no such thing as an inappropriate book for a teen. Even

when kids read books that are way beyond their comprehension or that include adult material, they’ll be fine. Nevertheless, now I have teenagers, and whenever I look at the stuff that my kids are actually reading or consuming, I still get the heebie-jeebies about, like, ‘My sweet baby’s reading about a strap-on!’ I think that’s a really common reaction that parents have. So what is a healthier way for me to think about my kids reading stuff that nonetheless makes me feel weird?” Kobabe answered: “I think a lot of parents’ gut reaction is, like, ‘Oh, no. I must protect them.’ They’re growing adults and you want them to be prepared for the world and engaged with the world and curious and thoughtful about the world. And in many ways, I think encountering a difficult subject in literature is just about the safest place that you can engage with it. I think it’s less shocking sometimes than film because you aren’t seeing moving images of human actors acting something out. And it’s of course safer and less immediate than experiencing that first-hand in their own lives.”

GETTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS Democratic Party Launches Fundraiser to Create ‘GAY’ Billboards John Hayden

G

ACTBLUE, THE OFFICIAL FUNDRAISING PLATFORM OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, HAS SECURED $300,000 WORTH OF INVENTORY TO GET THE MESSAGE “GAY” AND “SAY GAY” ON BILLBOARDS IN FLORIDA.

$300,000 worth of inventory to get the message “GAY” and “SAY GAY” on billboards in Florida. This is in response to the passage of a bill that bans any discussion of sexual orientation, in any form, in early school years. The bill is written so vaguely, that it could be interpreted to include upper grades and ban long standing organizations like Gay/Straight Alliances in high schools. The bill will take effect in time for the next school year, but could be delayed depending on legal challenges. The messaging has already been approved by billboard companies. This is a stark contrast to a banner plane company that refused to fly messages calling for the measure to be defeated. They said they do a lot of business in the South Florida skies, and didn’t want to alienate any potential future clients. While ActBlue has had the messaging approved and the inventory reserved, they still need money to pay for the ads. They’re currently accepting donations at ActBlue.com.

According to the Texas attorney general, Pride Weeks break state laws now. Ken Paxton has a history of attacking LGBT rights. The Austin Independent School District hosts a Pride Week celebration every year to highlight the district’s “commitment to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment,” according to NPR. Paxton claims these celebrations are a “week-long instructional effort in human sexuality without parental consent.” “The Texas Legislature has made it clear that when it comes to sex education, parents — not school districts — are in charge,” he wrote in a letter to Stephanie Elizalde, the superintendent of the Austin Independent School District March 22. Paxton added that parents can file complaints against the school district with the school board and the Texas Education Agency. Nevertheless, the school district said they will continue the events. Elizalde released a statement March 24

noting that Pride Month takes place in June when schools are on summer break. “Here at Austin ISD, we celebrate Pride during every school year so our LGBTQIA+ students know how much they are valued and loved,” she wrote. “This year, it’s important to me personally that they know they are respected and safe, too, and lest anyone have any doubt, that absolutely goes for our trans kids. We are ALL Austin ISD. We embrace diversity.”

with its religious views, according to the Washington Examiner, a conservative publication. The school’s mission statement urged students to uphold a “Christian character,” which meant they should oppose “all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, homosexuality, and pornography,” the Washington Blade reported. Jackson claimed to be unaware of the statement during questioning from Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Illinois) in February. “I was aware that Montrose Christian School was affiliated with Montrose Baptist Church,” Jackson said. “I was not aware that the school had a public website or that any statement of beliefs was posted on the school’s website at the time of my service. My service on the advisory school board primarily involved planning for school fundraising activities for the benefit of enrolled students. I did not receive any compensation for my service.” Republican Sen. John Kennedy criticized Justice Anthony Kennedy, the author of Obergefell, for refusing to identify a “formula” for fundamental rights and instead going “case by case,” according to Slate.com. “Can you understand why some Americans go, ‘Wait a minute. These are unenumerated rights. Are justices interpreting the Constitution or are they just deciding a right when they get five votes and it’s just a moral conviction?’” Kennedy asked. Nan Hunter, an emeritus law professor

at Georgetown University who has written about LGBT issues, jumped to her defense, according to the Blade. “Judge Jackson apparently volunteered for a year to help raise money for student services at a Christian school in the D.C. suburbs,” Hunter said. “There is no indication anywhere in her professional record or personal experience that she shares anti-gay views. In my opinion, her lifelong commitment to equality more than outweighs any concern that she might be biased against LGBT rights.” Despite those minor affiliations, the Human Rights Campaign supports Jackson, saying in a report March 18 that she has “integrity, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the Constitution.” “After a careful review of her record, it is clear that Jackson’s demonstrated fidelity to the principles of our Constitution instills confidence that she will continue Justice Breyer’s legacy as a champion of equality,” Joni Madison, interim president for the HRC, said. If she’s confirmed by the Senate, Jackson will replace Justice Stephen Breyer, who is retiring. Breyer has been a strong champion of LGBT rights on the court, almost always siding with the pro-LGBT stance in LGBT rights cases that have come before the court. Jackson is a favorite among progressives because of her background as Breyer’s former clerk, and as a former public defender in D.C., according to the Blade.

COLOMBIA’S CONGRESS MEMORABLE QUEER TRIPLES LGBT REPRESENTATION MOMENTS AT THE OSCARS Everitt Rosen

ill Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars Ceremony isn’t the only memorable moment. There were several LGBT people who won awards as well. First off is queer actor Kristen Stewart, who was nominated for her role as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” but did not win the Best Actress award, even thought fans said she deserved it. “Best Actress goes to Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Which is... not my choice. I think it’s the epitome of a great performance in a mostly forgettable film. Kristen Stewart should’ve won,” a fan tweeted. However, Ariana DeBose made history by becoming the first queer woman of color and first Afro Latina to win an Academy Award for her role in “West Side Story,” according to NBC News. During her acceptance speech, DeBose delivered a message directed at her younger self: “When you look into her eyes, you see an openly queer woman of color, an Afro Latina, who found her strength in life through art. And that’s what I believe we’re here to celebrate.” Next up is Wanda Sykes, a lesbian who is one of the three hosts of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. Sykes, along with Regina Hall and Amy Schumer, were cracking jokes on stage and even made a joke about the “Don’t Say Gay” bill that was recently signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis. “We’re going to have a great night tonight. And for you people in Florida, we’re going to have a gay night,” Sykes said, according to NBC News. Moving on to Elliot Page, who came out as trans in 2020, was reunited with the “Juno”

cast after 15 years when it was released in theaters. Page, along with co-stars J. K. Simmons and Jennifer Garner, presented the award for best original screenplay to Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast.” When Jessica Chastain accepted her best actress award in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” she decided to use her acceptance speech as an opportunity to address suicide prevention and queer rights, NBC News reported. “Right now, we are coming out of some difficult times that have been filled with a lot of trauma and isolation, and so many people out there feel hopelessness and they feel alone,” Chastain said. “And suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It’s touched many families; it’s touched mine, and especially members of the LGBTQ community, who oftentimes feel out of place with their peers.” Escorted by Lady Gaga, who is bisexual, Liza Minnelli presented the award for best picture, which went to “CODA.” It marked the 50th anniversary of the film that won her the best actress Oscar in the musical “Cabaret.” After losing friends early on in the AIDS epidemic, Minnelli, 76, became a vocal activist for LGBT rights and visibility, NBC News reported. While sitting in a wheelchair receiving a standing ovation, Gaga leaned down and said, “You see that? The public, they love you.” “You know how I love working with legends,” Gaga continued, holding on to Minnelli’s hand. “And I’m honored to present the final award of the evening with a true show business legend.”

n Colombia’s Congressional elections March 13, a record number of LGBT candidates won their seats. With this historic victory, LGBT representation in Colombia’s Congress will increase from two to six members. Caroline Giraldo is the first lesbian ever elected to the House of Representatives and the first LGBT person elected to Congress from Risaralda. Susana Boreal, Andrés Cancimance, Alejandro García, and María del Mar Pizarro are the first gay members of Congress elected from their respective departments. In Colombia’s Congressional election, 24 LGBT individuals ran, an increase of more than 50% over the previous year’s 14 LGBT candidates. Ten of the candidates who ran this year, including Giraldo and Cancimance, were trained by the LGBTQ Victory Institute. “For far too long, the LGBTQ community in Colombia has lived without equitable

ast week, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that erases LGBT history in schools. This week, he signed a bill that will cause even more harm to LGBT students. The “Don’t Say Gay” bill will ban all topics regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in some classrooms in K-3. The bill was passed by lawmakers earlier in March and is expected to take effect in July, according to CNN. Activists and senators were quick to criticize DeSantis. “Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill in the most cowardly way possible today. He hid his agenda from the media and the public until the last moment, skulking onto a charter school campus that is exempt from the law and away from students who would protest his presence,” said Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. “He has attacked parents and children in

our state by invoking hateful anti-LGBTQ stereotypes all to pander to his right-wing base as he prepares to run for president in 2024 ... He has made schools less safe for children.” State Senator Annette Tadde, who is running for Governor, criticized the governor as well, saying that he “goes out of his way to harm some of [the] most vulnerable groups on a regular basis.” The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBT youth, said students in Florida “deserve better.” “While I am saddened to see this harmful bill signed into law, I am inspired by the outpouring of support for LGBTQ students we have seen from parents, teachers, celebrities, and their peers,” said Amit Paley, CEO & Executive Director of The Trevor Project, in a statement. “Social support is vital for suicide prevention, and I want to remind LGBTQ youth in Florida and across the country that you are not alone.” Although 6 in 10 Americans opposed the bill according to a poll, DeSantis embraced it anyway. “It’s clear where Ron DeSantis’ priorities are. Of all the challenges Florida is facing and bills passed during the legislative session, he jumped at the opportunity to demonize LGBTQ+ Floridians,” said Democratic Caucus President Stephen Gaskill. “His shameful bigotry is cynically designed for partisan gain and authoritarian rule at the expense of LGBTQ+ students, educators, and families. It’s not a political game though when lives are on the line.”

SunServe Gala Celebrates 20 Years John Hayden

rom humble beginnings serving seniors to a broader vision of serving many marginalized communities, SunServe celebrated its 20-year history in South Florida. Their Shine Gala was held Saturday, March 26, at The Venue in Wilton Manors. The black tie, 1920s-themed party featured a singer, swords on fire, and music with a roaring 20s vibe. “It was all perfect,” SunServe Executive Director Tony Lima said. “We had the opportunity to honor our foundation and celebrate our future with over 320 people in attendance in their best formal gala wear! The night was magical!” SunServe began at Sunshine Cathedral providing care for senior citizens, a mission it continues. Since then they’ve expanded to serve LGBT youth, the trans community, people with housing and food insecurity, mental health services, and addiction/recovery services and more. “It has been entirely successful. It sold out, it’s beautiful, it’s amazing and we are surrounded by love,” Misty Eyez said. SunServe’s director of Transgender Services could feel the love in the ballroom. “It is an absolute and total blessing to be in this environment at this moment because we are surrounded by people who love our community and love our organizations. SunServe, over the last 20 years, has been busting our tail feathers for the marginalized communities who can’t advocate and fight for themselves.” The evening’s program included a video showcasing people who SunServe has helped over the years. Also honored were Sunshine Cathedral and Dr. Jim Lopresti with the Visionary Award, while Thou Art Woman received Tomorrow’s Legacy honor.

Once the program got underway, a call was made for people to stand up and pledge money to SunServe. Tens of thousands of dollars were raised in those moments, adding to the overall total of more than a quarter million dollars. “The funds raised through our Gala will help expand all of our mental health programs,” Lima said. “[That includes] youth, seniors, housing, and transgender and will also help refurbish the youth and senior center spaces.” While SunServe’s headquarters are in the heart of Wilton Manors, youth services, along with senior services, runs out of Sunshine Cathedral. Youth Services Director Sobourney Barnes is excited for the help on the way, pointing out that their work is “life-saving.” “We provide therapy, life coaching, and social support groups. What we do for youth is help process their trauma as well as teaching them life skills. We also provide them a safe space, a learning place, in order to create their own community.” Glen Weinzimer, founder of The Smart Ride and co-owner of Bona Italian Restaurant, was there to support SunServe, saying the work they do impacts the entire community. “I think it’s amazing what SunServe does for the community. And to see this many people out here supporting the 20th anniversary is incredible. Because of the people they serve, especially in the trans community, that don’t get the services and help but really need it.” The total on how much was raised is still being finalized. Misty Eyez said the money doesn’t change the mission, only the size of the impact. “We are going to be focusing even more on marginalized trans women of color. We’re going to keep doing what we do. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. We’re going to be working to make it more impactful.”

BACK AGAIN FOR 10-DAY LONG CELEBRATION Jose Cassola

MIAMI BEACH PRIDE — A MULTI-DAY CELEBRATION OF ARTS AND CULTURE, INCLUDING A TWO-DAY FESTIVAL AND PARADE — IS BACK AGAIN FROM FRIDAY, APRIL 1 TO SUNDAY, APRIL 10.

The annual LGBT celebration features special events, family-friendly community activations, social mixers and world-class entertainment. This will be Miami Beach Pride’s 13-year anniversary, as it originally launched in April 2009. The inaugural Miami Beach Pride celebration took place with more than 15,000 spectators, far surpassing organizers’ expectations. Today, it is the leading LGBT cultural arts organization in South Florida, regularly attracting more than 170,000 attendees annually. Miami Beach Pride is sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and also supported by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the MiamiDade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners and the City of Miami Beach. “Did you know it costs $1.3 million to produce our fabulous Pride event alone? To help ensure Pride remains a free community event, we rely on the help and support of community members and pridegoers,” a spokesperson for Miami Beach Pride said on the Pride website. “[Our] key mission is to raise funds for our events and community outreach programs that support the LGBTQIA+ community of South Florida. Consider helping us and in turn the community by making a donation. No amount is too small.”

PALM BEACH PRIDE COMEBACK TURNS INTO HUGE SUCCESS John Hayden PRIDE FLAGS UNFURLED FROM BUILDINGS, CROWDS LINED THE STREETS, AND COUPLES SAID “WE DO!” FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS, PALM BEACH PRIDE RETURNED TO LAKE WORTH BEACH. THE TWO-DAY EVENT WAS HELD MARCH 26-27 AT BRYANT PARK. COVID forced the event to be canceled in 2020 and pared down to a brief “Pride Market” last year. This year was a return to normal, with a slew of performers on stage, dozens of vendors and food trucks, and the parade on Sunday. TAKING THE PLUNGE Compass produced the event, which culminated with a mass wedding ceremony on Sunday after the parade. One of those getting married was Compass’ executive director, Julie Seaver. “I thought what greater venue than to be together with 20,000 of our greatest friends invited,” she said moments after the ceremony. “To be honest, we needed this so much. We’ve been engaged for a long time, working for equality for other couples. It was our time. It’s been our time.” She married her partner of 16 years, Penny Johnson. The joy radiated off both women, who say the day was a long time coming. “I guess we’re officially ‘officially’ off the market. Well, officially 16 years ago, and officially 16 minutes ago.” FIRST TIME PRIDE Before the weddings, hundreds marched the parade route, which was lined with thousands of spectators. “I’m so excited,” Lisa Le said. “I get to represent the transgender community and the children. and I love every one of y’all.” This was the first ever Pride for Le, who is from Arkansas. “The community is nothing like Arkansas. I feel like I’ve found my tribe. I’m with my people now and I don’t want to leave.” Also attending the event for the first time were volunteers Antoinette Martinez and Nick Jarriel. They work for Chase bank, which is a community partner of Compass. They were selling Pride and parade tickets on Sunday, and say they were motivated to show up and do more. “We love to work events together and give back to the community, and just be there for each other,” Martinez said. “This is a great experience for us. It really has been awesome.” Local artist and activist Rolando Chang Barrero finally got to show off some of his work that was designed for pride before COVID put it on hold. “I’m here because I have my stage set, finally. The first year it was canceled and it’s been sitting in storage. I finally brought the stage set with the Pride Daisy, and I’m really happy that people are finally getting to see it.” There were also chants of “Say Gay!” to protest the law, just signed by Gov. DeSantis, which restricts even acknowledging the LGBT community in public schools. Le said events like this are important for letting closeted youth know they aren’t alone. “We’re here for you and it’s okay to be who you are and feel the way you feel. There’s nothing wrong with you. You don’t have a mental disorder. You are born the way that you are and you need to love yourself like nobody else.”

THE ONLY WAY ‘DON’T SAY GAY’ IS CONSISTENT WITH TITLE VII IS COMPLETE GENDER NEUTRALITY Donna Ballman

I

’m following up on my post “Florida Don’t Say Gay Bill Arguably Requires 100% Gender Neutrality Until 4th Grade,” one, because I’ve thought more about it, two, because the law really irks me, and three, because I want to explain why an employment lawyer is writing about an education law. If I go through my memories of law school, back when dinosaurs roamed, one of the things they taught us is the rules of statutory construction. That is, how judges are supposed to interpret laws after they are passed. And one thing that the rules of statutory construction say is that separate statutes must be read together, when possible, to achieve a harmonious statutory scheme. It is assumed that the legislature does not intend to create inconsistency. (Ha! Have they ever listened to a legislative debate?) But anyhow, that’s one of the things a judge has to look at. And I keep coming back to two laws that are the backbone of any employment IF SCHOOLS, law practice: Title VII, which is the federal SCHOOL BOARDS, law prohibiting discrimination in the OR THE STATE OF workplace, and the Florida Civil Rights Photo via PxHere. A&E APPOINTMENTS A new exhibit at the World AIDS Museum in Fort Lauderdale examines the life and legacy of AIDS activist and reality TV star Pedro Zamora. Credit: MTV.

ARTSBEAT PEDRO, POETRY AND PORTUGUESE DANCERS J.W. Arnold

“CALL ME PETER” AT WAM For a generation of young Americans, Pedro Zamora was the face of AIDS. The young Cuban-American AIDS educator and Miami resident brought attention to the epidemic and LGBT issues as a cast member of MTV’s reality series “The Real World: San Francisco” in 1994. His relationship with Sean Sasser was also documented on the show, and the broadcast of their commitment ceremony was the first same-sex ceremony seen on television. Shortly after filming ended, Zamora’s health began to rapidly decline and he died a few months later. “Call Me Peter: 50 Years of Pedro Zamora,” on display through June 30 at the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM), remembers Zamora and his legacy on what would have been his 50th birthday. The exhibit includes photographs, multimedia and mementos. The museum is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, inside the ArtServe building. WAM is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, go to WorldAIDSMuseum.org.

POETRY IN MIAMI Residents and visitors alike in Miami will encounter messages in verse during the “O, Miami” Poetry Festival, April 1-30. For more information and full schedule of “O, Miami” events, go to OMiami.org.

A&E ARTS

OUT IN THE TROPICS FESTIVAL EXPLORES DIVERSE CULTURES, IDENTITIES J.W. Arnold

F

UNDarte’s Out in the Tropics, April 7 to May 7, is a month-long, multidisciplinary arts festival founded more than a decade ago to bridge the diverse cultures of South Florida with an emphasis on the Latin community. Founder Ever Chavez and organizers recently announced a diverse program for 2022, intended to “present daring and innovative performances showcasing artists and projects that address gender politics, sexuality and the LGBTQ identity.” The festival opens with “Corporeal Decorum,” April 7-9 at Miami Theater Center, a multidisciplinary performance piece that explores the cultural erasure of Miami’s Art Deco District. Drawing inspiration from earlier examples of architectural preservation in Miami Beach, queer choreographer Liony Garcia reinterprets Miami’s urban and material past as a contemporary embodied form. Choreographer Lukas Avendaño’s “Réquiem por un alcavarán” (“Requiem for a Curlew”) will also debut April 8-9 at Centro Cultural Español. The work will offer a rare look at the performative dance of the Zapotec man-woman known as the muxe. Muxe culture provides a shrouded social acceptance for certain taboos while celebrating what is still seen as a transgression. A local bird, the curlew, whose mating ritual often ends up sacrificing the male for the female, inspires the dance. On April 15 at 8 p.m. at the North Beach Bandshell, a special double bill concert will offer performances by Miguel Gutierrez and queer Asturian musician Rodrigo Cuevas, whose “Trópico de Covadonga” is “an appropriation of folklore, myths and legends of northern Spain.” The Makuyeika Theatre Collective will premiere the “Andares,” April 22-23 at 8 p.m. at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. The company uses keen artistic sensibility to address themes of great social, cultural, and human value that create original narratives and theatricalities for Mexico’s indigenous people. “wayfarer” in the language of the Wixarika people and was formed as part of a Julie Taymor World Theatre Fellowship project. “Andares” (“Pathways”) centers on the lives of indigenous youth, devised collectively through personal anecdotes, ancestral myths, and traditional music and art forms. Two contemporary Spanish artists, Marco Flores, multi-awarded bailaor and choreographer, and José Almarcha, lead guitarist, will present “Milonga, Sonata y Plata” on May 6 at 8 p.m. at Miami-Dade County Auditorium. The performance is a visual and musical dialogue that spontaneously juggles classical forms while yielding their own contemporary expression. The festival concludes on Saturday, May 7, with another double bill program (location to be announced) including a live literary reading by Ena Columbié that explores Latino identity and issues surrounding migration through juxtaposition of images and words, and a stand-up comedy performance by San Francisco-based artist Marga Gomez, who will explore current themes such as acculturation and gender roles in the immigrant community.

rchestra Miami and Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi will celebrate the 95th anniversary of the founding of Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) in Miami with a special concert on Saturday, April 9 performed in a restored Coast Guard hangar on Dinner Key. The 57 musicians will perform two rarely heard American masterworks as part of its Discover Miami through Music series: Kurt Weill’s “Lindbergh’s Flight” and Marc Blitzstein’s “Airborne Symphony.” Both works are being staged by director Michael Yawney and feature the Rose Herrera Dance Theatre and Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida, led by Assistant Artistic Director Anthony Cabrera. The narratives will be punctuated by the projection of more than 200 historical images compiled by HistoryMiami. The series was conceived by Rinaldi as a way to educate the community about Miami’s unique history through music. “By presenting appropriately-themed concerts in Miami’s landmarks, we can learn more about our city — and each other — through music,” she said. “Pan Am played such an important role in the early years of Miami and considering the theatrical nature of both of these pieces, it makes perfect sense to present them in this staged setting.” Weill’s “Lindbergh’s Flight,” with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht, tells the story of Charles Lindbergh and his historic transatlantic flight. Composed in the style of a Radiolehrstück, a “teaching play for the radio,” it has 15 short movements for tenor solo, baritone and bass solo and mixed choir. The role of Charles Lindbergh will be sung by tenor Gregory Schmidt, who last appeared with Orchestra Miami as the hero Tamino in the 2018 production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” Blitzstein’s “Airborne Symphony” was originally composed as a score for a film and later reconceived as a large-scale symphony on the theme of “the sacred struggle of the airborne free men of the world . . . to crush the monstrous fascist obstructionist in their path.” Blitzstein, a gay man, composed the work in 1945 as a tribute to his companion of five years, Bill Hewitt, and the other men fighting during the war.

Orchestra Miami conductor Elaine Rinaldi’s grandfather, a longtime mechanic for Pan Am, inspired an aviation-themed concert in Miami on April 9. Credit: Courtesy.

The symphony with narrator and men’s choir chronicles the history of man’s quest for flight from the mythological Icarus through World War II, including the birth of flight at Kittyhawk, the horrors of aerial attack, the pure joy of flying in a cloudless sky, the tedium of waiting for action, the poignancy of a letter from a homesick bombardier, and the triumph of good over evil. Vanessa Elise will make her Orchestra Miami debut as the narrator, while Philip Kalmanovich will sing the role of the bombardier. The former Coast Guard hangar now serves as the headquarters for Shake-a-Leg Miami, a nonprofit organization that offers people living with physical challenges the opportunities to experience sailing, kayaking, fishing and other educational and recreational activities. “Working with the City of Miami, we restored the historic U.S. Coast Guard hangar to operate water sports programs. Never did we realize that Orchestra Miami and HistoryMiami Museum would fill it with magnificent music and images from Miami’s rich aviation and boating history. It’s going to be an amazing show,” said Harry Horgan, CEO of Shake A Leg Miami. Beyond the music, the concert holds special significance for Rinaldi, whose grandfather, Frank Kilgard, was a mechanic at Pan Am and responsible for the design of several patented aviation systems and mechanisms.

Orchestra Miami will perform “Discover Miami through Music: Airborne” on Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. at Shake-a-Leg Miami, 2620 S. Bayshore Dr. in Miami. Tickets start at $35, and a $10 livestream will also be offered at OrchestraMiami.org.

FEATURE PETS

I’M A VERY GOOD BOY

DUKE

Five-year-old Duke (ID 653783) is one several adult dogs waiting at the Humane Society of Broward County to meet you. He came to the HSBC from a rural shelter where people don’t often go to adopt, so he is hoping his luck will change here. Duke is a sweet fellow but is nervous here at the shelter with the other dogs barking. He enjoys going for walks and will need a patient, loving family who will give him some time to settle in. He appears to be part Labrador retriever, but we can’t be sure what he is mixed with. We know there must be someone with a big heart who will give this 79-pound fellow a forever home. Could it be you?

Appointments are not necessary to visit the Humane Society of Broward County. However, please complete the preadoption application on the website www.humanebroward.com prior to stopping by if you would like to meet a pet. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, a block west of I95, and opens daily at 11 a.m. If you have questions call 954-989-3977 ext. 6. Can’t adopt, but want to help? The Humane Society has wish lists on Amazon and Chewy. ALL STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND CUSTOMERS SHOULD WEAR A MASK TO ENTER THE SHELTER.

Help us evaluate a new approach to HIV treatment

with the DYNAMIC (research) study. If you recently learned that you are living with HIV, joining a clinical research study may be one option for you to consider. You may qualify for the DYNAMIC study if: • You are at least 18 years old. • You have been diagnosed with HIV. • You have not started treatment for HIV.

Participation is voluntary. If you join this study, you can change your mind and leave at any time. It is always best to discuss a research study with your doctor first so he or she can help you decide if the study may be right for you.

There are other requirements you will need to meet. The study doctor will review these with you.

Investigational medications and study-related tests and procedures will be provided at no cost.

The DYNAMIC study is testing an investigational medication in combination with an approved HIV medication. By joining a study like DYNAMIC, you can help move HIV research forward.
